Increasing the power rating of electric vehicles (EV) fast charging stations to reduce charging times is considered critical to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles. Besides increasing the power, other drivers pushing the development of EV fast chargers include the improvement of efficiency and reliability. Partial power converters (PPC) have emerged as an interesting option for some of the power converter stages in fast charging stations due to their potential to increase efficiency and power rating. However, some PPCs operate as switched autotransformers by using high frequency (HF) isolation transformers but without providing galvanic isolation. This is a drawback due to cost, size and losses introduced by the transformer. This paper presents a transformerless DC–DC Type I step‐up PPC for a DC–DC regulation converter for EV fast charging stations. The proposed converter replaces the transformer commonly used in Type I PPC by an impedance network, resulting in a more efficient, cheaper, and less complex converter option. This article presents a novel concept of a universal solar converter suitable for application in both in the dc or single-phase ac grids using the same terminals. The idea lies in the utilization of the same semiconductors in the dc–dc and in the dc–ac configuration, resulting in minimal redundancy. Possible semiconductor stages are considered. The particular attention is focused on the output filter design along with proper protection circuit selection for dc and ac grids. The design example and comparative analysis between dc–dc, dc–ac, and universal solutions are given. The experimental prototype of the universal solar converter that is rated for 3.6 kVA power in the ac mode and 5 kW in the dc mode is presented. The experimental results demonstrate the ability of operation in ac or dc grids with main correspondent modes. Possible fields of application along with main benefits are addressed in conclusions. The article overviews residential and building-integrated photovoltaic (PV) module types. It demonstrates that existing dc–dc converter technologies do not allow building a universal interface microconverter because of wide dispersion of the parameters. However, the absence of universal microconverters limits the widespread adoption of PV modules despite great benefits for energy-efficient buildings and restrains the deployment of residential PV-based dc microgrids. Based on the design requirements formulated, a new approach utilizing a boost half-bridge front-end inverter and a three-mode reconfigurable rectifier (RR) is proposed. The article describes the operating principle of the derived converter. The RR allows keeping the duty cycle of the input side within a favorable range of acceptable efficiencies. An experimental prototype rated for 360 W was assembled and tested in the entire operating range. The experimental results prove the ultrawide input voltage range of over 1:20 and demonstrate the capability of the proposed concept to interface different PV module types while enabling their shade-tolerant operation. The cost reduction of power-electronic devices, the increase in their reliability, efficiency, and power capability, and lower development times, together with more demanding application requirements, has driven the development of several new inverter topologies recently introduced in the industry, particularly medium-voltage converters. New more complex inverter topologies and new application fields come along with additional control challenges, such as voltage imbalances, power-quality issues, higher efficiency needs, and fault-tolerant operation, which necessarily requires the parallel development of modulation schemes. Therefore, recently, there have been significant advances in the field of modulation of dc/ac converters, which conceptually has been dominated during the last several decades almost exclusively by classic pulse-width modulation (PWM) methods. This paper presents a comprehensive study on the state-of-the-art and emerging wind energy technologies from the electrical engineering perspective. In an attempt to decrease cost of energy, increase the wind energy conversion efficiency, reliability, power density, and comply with the stringent grid codes, the electric generators and power electronic converters have emerged in a rigorous manner. From the market based survey, the most successful generator-converter configurations are addressed along with few promising topologies available in the literature. The back-to-back connected converters, passive generator-side converters, converters for multiphase generators, and converters without intermediate dc-link are investigated for high-power wind energy conversion systems (WECS), and presented in low and medium voltage category. The onshore and offshore wind farm configurations are analyzed with respect to the series/parallel connection of wind turbine ac/dc output terminals, and high voltage ac/dc transmission. The fault-ride through compliance methods used in the induction and synchronous generator based WECS are also discussed. The past, present and future trends in megawatt WECS are reviewed in terms of mechanical and electrical technologies, integration to power systems, and control theory. The important survey results, and technical merits and demerits of various WECS electrical systems are summarized by tables. Among all the conventional maximum power point tracking (MPPT) techniques for a photovoltaic (PV) system that have been proposed, incremental conductance (INC) and perturb and observe (P&O) are the most popular because of their simplicity and ease of implementation. However, under partial shading conditions (PSCs), these MPPT algorithms fail to track the global maximum power point (GMPP) and instead converge into local maximum power points (LMPPs), resulting in considerable PV power loss. This paper presents a new hybrid MPPT technique combining the artificial bee colony (ABC) and P&O algorithms named ABC-P&O. The P&O technique is used to track the MPP under uniform irradiance, and only during irradiance variations is the ABC algorithm employed. The effectiveness of the proposed hybrid algorithm at tracking the GMPP, under both uniform and nonuniform irradiance conditions, was assessed by hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) tests employed by a dc–dc boost converter. Then, the ABC-P&O strategy was applied to obtain the voltage reference for the outer PI control loop, which provided the current reference to the discrete-time sliding-mode current control. The ABC-P&O algorithm has a reasonable computational cost, allowing the use of a commercial, low-priced digital signal controller (DSC) with outer voltage and inner current control loops. Many challenging tests validated that the proposed ABC-P&O technique converges fast to the GMPP with high efficiency and superior performance under different PSCs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper, along with an earlier published paper as Part 1, provides a comprehensive review of the state of the art of high-power converters (above 1 MW) for adjustable-speed ac drives. In this highly active area, different converter topologies have been developed for various drive applications in the industry. Due to its extensive coverage, the subject is divided into two parts: multilevel voltage source and current source converter topologies. This paper is focused on the second part and covers the current source converter technologies, including pulsewidth-modulated current-source inverters (CSIs) and load-commutated inverters. In addition, this paper also addresses the present status of the direct converter, which is also known as cycloconverter (CCV). This paper focuses on the latest CSI and CCV technologies and an overview of the commonly used modulation schemes. It also provides the latest technological advances and future trends in CSI- and CCV-fed large drives.
