Purpose: Emerging evidence suggests that the use of artificial intelligence can assist in the timely detection and optimization of therapeutic approach in patients with prostate cancer. The conventional perspective on radiomics encompassing segmentation and the extraction of radiomic features considers it as an independent and sequential process. However, it is not necessary to adhere to this viewpoint. In this study, we show that besides generating masks from which radiomic features can be extracted, prostate segmentation and reconstruction models provide valuable information in their feature space, which can improve the quality of radiomic signatures models for disease aggressiveness classification., Materials and Methods: We perform 2,244 experiments with deep learning features extracted from 13 different models trained using different anatomic zones and characterize how modeling decisions, such as deep feature aggregation and dimensionality reduction, affect performance., Results: While models using deep features from full gland and radiomic features consistently lead to improved disease aggressiveness prediction performance, others are detrimental. Our results suggest that the use of deep features can be beneficial, but an appropriate and comprehensive assessment is necessary to ensure that their inclusion does not harm predictive performance., Conclusion: The study findings reveal that incorporating deep features derived from autoencoder models trained to reconstruct the full prostate gland (both zonal models show worse performance than radiomics only models), combined with radiomic features, often lead to a statistically significant increase in model performance for disease aggressiveness classification. Additionally, the results also demonstrate that the choice of feature selection is key to achieving good performance, with principal component analysis (PCA) and PCA + relief being the best approaches and that there is no clear difference between the three proposed latent representation extraction techniques.

Emotion recognition has become increasingly important in the field of Deep Learning (DL) and computer vision due to its broad applicability by using human-computer interaction (HCI) in areas such as psychology, healthcare, and entertainment. In this paper, we conduct a systematic review of facial and pose emotion recognition using DL and computer vision, analyzing and evaluating 77 papers from different sources under Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Our review covers several topics, including the scope and purpose of the studies, the methods employed, and the used datasets. The scope of this work is to conduct a systematic review of facial and pose emotion recognition using DL methods and computer vision. The studies were categorized based on a proposed taxonomy that describes the type of expressions used for emotion detection, the testing environment, the currently relevant DL methods, and the datasets used. The taxonomy of methods in our review includes Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), Faster Region-based Convolutional Neural Network (R-CNN), Vision Transformer (ViT), and "Other NNs", which are the most commonly used models in the analyzed studies, indicating their trendiness in the field. Hybrid and augmented models are not explicitly categorized within this taxonomy, but they are still important to the field. This review offers an understanding of state-of-the-art computer vision algorithms and datasets for emotion recognition through facial expressions and body poses, allowing researchers to understand its fundamental components and trends.

The sky may seem big enough for two flying vehicles to collide, but the facts show that mid-air collisions still occur occasionally and are a significant concern. Pilots learn manual tactics to avoid collisions, such as see-and-avoid, but these rules have limitations. Automated solutions have reduced collisions, but these technologies are not mandatory in all countries or airspaces, and they are expensive. These problems have prompted researchers to continue the search for low-cost solutions. One attractive solution is to use computer vision to detect obstacles in the air due to its reduced cost and weight. A well-trained deep learning solution is appealing because object detection is fast in most cases, but it relies entirely on the training data set. The algorithm chosen for this study is optical flow. The optical flow vectors can help us to separate the motion caused by camera motion from the motion caused by incoming objects without relying on training data. This paper describes the development of an optical flow-based airborne obstacle detection algorithm to avoid mid-air collisions. The approach uses the visual information from a monocular camera and detects the obstacles using morphological filters, optical flow, focus of expansion, and a data clustering algorithm. The proposal was evaluated using realistic vision data obtained with a self-developed simulator. The simulator provides different environments, trajectories, and altitudes of flying objects. The results showed that the optical flow-based algorithm detected all incoming obstacles along their trajectories in the experiments. Surface defect detection with machine learning has become an important tool in industries and a large field of study for researchers or workers in recent years. It is necessary to have a simplified source of information that helps us to better focus on one type of surface. In this systematic review, we present a classification for surface defect detection based on convolutional neural networks (CNNs) focused on surface types. Findings: Out of 253 records identified, 59 primary studies were eligible. Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, we analyzed the structures of each study and the concepts related to defects and their types on surfaces. The presented review is mainly focused on finding a classification for the types of surfaces most used in industry (metal, building, ceramic, wood, and special). We delve into the specifics of each surface category, offering illustrative examples of their applications within both industrial and laboratory settings. Furthermore, we propose a new taxonomy of machine learning based on the obtained results and collected information. We summarized the studies and extracted the main characteristics such as type of surface, problem types, timeline, type of network, techniques, and datasets. Among the most relevant results of our analysis, we found that the metallic surface is the most used, as it is the one found in 62.71% of the studies, and the most prevalent problem type is classification, accounting for 49.15% of the total. Furthermore, we observe that transfer learning was employed in 83.05% of the studies, while data augmentation was utilized in 59.32%. Our findings also provide insights into the cameras most frequently employed, along with the strategies adopted to address illumination challenges present in certain articles and the approach to creating datasets for real-world applications. The main results presented in this review allow for a quick and efficient search of information for researchers and professionals interested in improving the results of their defect detection projects. There is a growing piece of evidence that artificial intelligence may be helpful in the entire prostate cancer disease continuum. However, building machine learning algorithms robust to inter- and intra-radiologist segmentation variability is still a challenge. With this goal in mind, several model training approaches were compared: removing unstable features according to the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC); training independently with features extracted from each radiologist's mask; training with the feature average between both radiologists; extracting radiomic features from the intersection or union of masks; and creating a heterogeneous dataset by randomly selecting one of the radiologists' masks for each patient. The classifier trained with this last resampled dataset presented with the lowest generalization error, suggesting that training with heterogeneous data leads to the development of the most robust classifiers. On the contrary, removing features with low ICC resulted in the highest generalization error. The selected radiomics dataset, with the randomly chosen radiologists, was concatenated with deep features extracted from neural networks trained to segment the whole prostate. This new hybrid dataset was then used to train a classifier. The results revealed that, even though the hybrid classifier was less overfitted than the one trained with deep features, it still was unable to outperform the radiomics model. Simple Summary: Prostate cancer represents a highly prevalent form of cancer worldwide, with timely detection and treatment being crucial for achieving a high survival rate. Manual segmentation, which is the process of manually identifying different anatomical structures or tissues within an image, is the most prevalent detection method. However, it is a time-consuming and subjective task constrained by the radiologists' expertise, which underpins the demand for automated segmentation methods. In this study, we conduct a comprehensive and rigorous comparison of multiple prevalent deep learning-based automatic segmentation models for the prostate gland and both peripheral and transition zones, using multi-parametric MRI data. Prostate cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer globally, affecting roughly one in every eight men according to the American Cancer Society. Although the survival rate for prostate cancer is significantly high given the very high incidence rate, there is an urgent need to improve and develop new clinical aid systems to help detect and treat prostate cancer in a timely manner. In this retrospective study, our contributions are twofold: First, we perform a comparative unified study of different commonly used segmentation models for prostate gland and zone (peripheral and transition) segmentation. Second, we present and evaluate an additional research question regarding the effectiveness of using an object detector as a pre-processing step to aid in the segmentation process. We perform a thorough evaluation of the deep learning models on two public datasets, where one is used for cross-validation and the other as an external test set. Overall, the results reveal that the choice of model is relatively inconsequential, as the majority produce non-significantly different scores, apart from nnU-Net which consistently outperforms others, and that the models trained on data cropped by the object detector often generalize better, despite performing worse during cross-validation. Power quality issues can affect the performance of devices powered by the grid and can, in severe cases, permanently damage connected devices. Events that affect power quality include sags, swells, waveform distortions and transients. Transients are one of the most common power quality disturbances and are caused by lightning strikes or switching activities among power-grid-connected systems and devices. Transients can reach very high magnitudes, and their duration spans from nanoseconds to milliseconds. This study proposed a deep-learning-based technique that was supported by convolutional neural networks and a bidirectional long short-term memory approach in order to detect and characterize power-quality transients. The method was validated (i.e., benchmarked) using an alternative algorithm that had been previously validated according to a digital high-pass filter and a morphological closing operation. As the interest in deep learning tools continues to rise, new multimedia research fields begin to discover its potential. Both image and point cloud coding are good examples of technologies, where deep learning-based solutions have recently displayed very competitive performance. In this context, this article brings two novel contributions to the point cloud geometry coding state-of-the-art; first, a novel neighborhood adaptive distortion metric to be used in the training loss function, which allows significantly improving the rate-distortion performance with commonly used objective quality metrics; second, an explicit quantization approach at the training and coding times to generate varying rate/quality with a single trained deep learning coding model, effectively reducing the training complexity and storage requirements. The result is an improved deep learning-based point cloud geometry coding solution, which is both more compression efficient and less demanding in training complexity and storage. Point clouds are a very rich 3D visual representation model, which has become increasingly appealing for multimedia applications with immersion, interaction and realism requirements. Due to different acquisition and creation conditions as well as target applications, point clouds’ characteristics may be very diverse, notably on their density. While geographical information systems or autonomous driving applications may use rather sparse point clouds, cultural heritage or virtual reality applications typically use denser point clouds to more accurately represent objects and people. Naturally, to offer immersion and realism, point clouds need a rather large number of points, thus asking for the development of efficient coding solutions. The use of deep learning models for coding purposes has recently gained relevance, with latest developments in image coding achieving state-of-the-art performance, thus making natural the adoption of this technology also for point cloud coding. This paper presents a novel deep learning-based solution for point cloud geometry coding which is able to efficiently adapt to the content's characteristics. The proposed coding solution divides the point cloud into 3D blocks and selects the most suitable available deep learning coding model to code each block, thus maximizing the compression performance. In comparison to the state-of-the-art MPEG G-PCC Trisoup standard, the proposed coding solution offers average quality gains up to 4.9 and 5.7 dB for PSNR D1 and PSNR D2, respectively. Simple Summary: Our work is motivated by the increasing production of chemicals with environmentally harmful effects to our aquatic ecosystems. We show that it is possible to detect and distinguish the presence of several different emerging contaminants, using the photochemical responses of a microalgae species, which is among the most abundant phytoplankton group in the oceans. We use several machine learning and deep learning models that operate on chlorophyll fluorescence induction curves, which are composed of fluorescence values taken at different time steps from the microalgae exposure trials, achieving up to 97.65% accuracy when predicting the type of contaminant, and up to 100% in several cases when predicting the exposure concentration. Our results show the combination of these models with the fluorescence induction curves creates a powerful tool for ecotoxicity assessment, capable of classifying model organisms for their contaminant exposure, both in terms of type and concentration, opening new doors for toxicophenomics developments. Over recent decades, the world has experienced the adverse consequences of uncontrolled development of multiple human activities. In recent years, the total production of chemicals has been composed of environmentally harmful compounds, the majority of which have significant environmental impacts. These emerging contaminants (ECs) include a wide range of man-made chemicals (such as pesticides, cosmetics, personal and household care products, pharmaceuticals), which are of worldwide use. Among these, several ECs raised concerns regarding their ecotoxicological effects and how to assess them efficiently. This is of particular interest if marine diatoms are considered as potential target species, due to their widespread distribution, being the most abundant phytoplankton group in the oceans, and also being responsible for key ecological roles. Bio-optical ecotoxicity methods appear as reliable, fast, and high-throughput screening (HTS) techniques, providing large datasets with biological relevance on the mode of action of these ECs in phototrophic organisms, such as diatoms. However, from the large datasets produced, only a small amount of data are normally extracted for physiological evaluation, leaving out a large amount of information on the ECs exposure. In the present paper, we use all the available information and evaluate the application of several machine learning and deep learning algorithms to predict the exposure of model organisms to different ECs under different doses, using a model marine diatom (Phaeodactylum tricornutum) as a test organism. The results show that 2D convolutional neural networks are the best method to predict the type of EC to which the cultures were exposed, achieving a median accuracy of 97.65%, while Rocket is the best at predicting which concentration the cultures were subjected to, achieving a median accuracy of 100%.
