This paper focuses on a fundamental question in Wi-Fi-based gesture recognition: "Can we use the knowledge learned from some users to perform gesture recognition for others?". This problem is also known as cross-target recognition. It arises in many practical deployments of Wi-Fi-based gesture recognition where it is prohibitively expensive to collect training data from every single user. We present CrossGR, a low-cost cross-target gesture recognition system. As a departure from existing approaches, CrossGR does not require prior knowledge (such as who is currently performing a gesture) of the target user. Instead, CrossGR employs a deep neural network to extract user-agnostic but gesture-related Wi-Fi signal characteristics to perform gesture recognition. To provide sufficient training data to build an effective deep learning model, CrossGR employs a generative adversarial network to automatically generate many synthetic training data from a small set of real-world examples collected from a small number of users. Such a strategy allows CrossGR to minimize the user involvement and the associated cost in collecting training examples for building an accurate gesture recognition system. We evaluate CrossGR by applying it to perform gesture recognition across 10 users and 15 gestures. Experimental results show that CrossGR achieves an accuracy of over 82.6% (up to 99.75%). We demonstrate that CrossGR delivers comparable recognition accuracy, but uses an order of magnitude less training samples collected from the end-users when compared to state-of-the-art recognition systems.

Mobile sensing is a promising sensing paradigm in the era of Internet of Things (IoT) that utilizes mobile device sensors to collect sensory data about sensing targets and further applies learning techniques to recognize the sensed targets to correct classes or categories. Due to the recent great success of deep learning, an emerging trend is to adopt deep learning in this recognition process, while we find an overlooked yet crucial issue to be solved in this paper — The size of deep learning models should be sufficiently large for reliably classifying various types of recognition targets, while the achieved processing delay may fail to satisfy the stringent latency requirement from applications. If we blindly shrink the deep learning model for acceleration, the performance cannot be guaranteed. To cope with this challenge, this paper presents a compact deep neural network architecture, namely cDeepArch . The key idea of the cDeepArch design is to decompose the entire recognition task into two lightweight sub-problems: context recognition and the context-oriented target recognitions. This decomposition essentially utilizes the adequate storage to trade for the CPU and memory resource consumptions during execution. In addition, we further formulate the execution latency for decomposed deep learning models and propose a set of enhancement techniques, so that system performance and resource consumption can be quantitatively balanced. We implement a cDeepArch prototype system and conduct extensive experiments. The result shows that cDeepArch achieves excellent recognition performance and the execution latency is also lightweight.

Deep learning has made breakthroughs and substantial in many fields due to its powerful automatic representation capabilities. It has been proven that neural architecture design is crucial to the feature representation of data and the final performance. However, the design of the neural architecture heavily relies on the researchers' prior knowledge and experience. And due to the limitations of human' inherent knowledge, it is difficult for people to jump out of their original thinking paradigm and design an optimal model. Therefore, an intuitive idea would be to reduce human intervention as much as possible and let the algorithm automatically design the neural architecture. Neural Architecture Search (NAS) is just such a revolutionary algorithm, and the related research work is complicated and rich. Therefore, a comprehensive and systematic survey on the NAS is essential. Previously related surveys have begun to classify existing work mainly based on the key components of NAS: search space, search strategy, and evaluation strategy. While this classification method is more intuitive, it is difficult for readers to grasp the challenges and the landmark work involved. Therefore, in this survey, we provide a new perspective: beginning with an overview of the characteristics of the earliest NAS algorithms, summarizing the problems in these early NAS algorithms, and then providing solutions for subsequent related research work. Besides, we conduct a detailed and comprehensive analysis, comparison, and summary of these works. Summary The difficulty of obtaining reliable individual identification of animals has limited researcher's ability to obtain quantitative data to address important ecological, behavioral, and conservation questions. Traditional marking methods placed animals at undue risk. Machine learning approaches for identifying species through analysis of animal images has been proved to be successful. But for many questions, there needs a tool to identify not only species but also individuals. Here, we introduce a system developed specifically for automated face detection and individual identification with deep learning methods using both videos and still-framed images that can be reliably used for multiple species. The system was trained and tested with a dataset containing 102,399 images of 1,040 individuals across 41 primate species whose individual identity was known and 6,562 images of 91 individuals across four carnivore species.
