Purpose: To provide an overview of the in-vitro bond strength of universal adhesives to zirconia and analyze whether these adhesives are a reliable alternative to conventional zirconia primers., Materials and Methods: A systematic search was conducted in PubMed/Medline, Scopus, and ISI Web of Science databases up to August 2021. Investigations published in English, assessing resin-mediated bond to zirconia using universal adhesives compared to phosphate/silane-based primer or phosphate-based primer were included. After study selection and data extraction, risk of bias analysis was performed. Statistical analyses were performed using RevMan 5.4, with a random effects model, at a significance level of 0.05., Results: In total, 23 studies were included for qualitative and quantitative analysis. Universal adhesives showed higher bond strengths than did phosphate-based primers (p < 0.00001) to aged zirconia without airborne alumina-particle abrasion. Similar results were observed when the zirconia surface was airborne-particle abraded at baseline and after dynamic aging (p < 0.0001). When universal adhesives and phosphate-silane based primers were compared, similar bond strengths (p ≥ 0.001) were observed after surface abrasion, regardless of storage condition., Conclusion: The results showed that universal adhesives generate higher bond strengths when compared to conventional zirconia primers.

Statement of Problem: Although the clinical use of self-adhesive flowable composite resins is convenient, the decision to use flowable or conventional composite resin remains controversial., Purpose: The purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to assess the in vitro bond strength of self-adhesive flowable composite resins to enamel or dentin compared with conventional composite resins using etch-and-rinse or self-etch adhesive systems., Material and Methods: Two independent reviewers performed searches in the PubMed (MEDLINE), Cochrane Wiley, Web of Science, Scopus, and Google Scholar databases for studies reporting on the bond strength of self-adhesive flowable and conventional composite resins to enamel and dentin published from January 2010 up to September 2020. A meta-analysis software program was used for the meta-analysis. Comparisons were conducted using standardized mean differences considering the random-effects model (α=.05)., Results: Twenty-two studies were considered for the meta-analysis. Immediate and long-term bond strength to enamel was improved when a conventional composite resin was used in combination with an adhesive system (P<.001). Bond strength to dentin was improved by using an adhesive system in combination with a conventional composite resin (P<.001)., Conclusions: The bond strength of self-adhesive flowable composite resins is lower than that of conventional composite resins, indicating limited ability to bond to enamel and dentin., (Copyright © 2021 Editorial Council for the Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry. Purpose: To systematically review the literature to evaluate whether the bond strength of resin-based materials to enamel is affected by deproteinizing agents., Materials and Methods: This systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted according to the PRISMA statement. PubMed, ISI Web of Science, Cochrane Library, SciELO, Scopus, LILACS, IBECS, and BVS databases were screened up to December 2020. Eligibility criteria included in vitro studies that reported the effect of a deproteinizing agent applied before or after acid etching on the immediate or long-term bond strength of resin-based materials to enamel. The meta-analysis was carried out using Review Manager (version 5.3.5). A global comparison was performed with the standardized mean difference based on random-effect models at a significance level of α = 0.05., Results: A total of 23 studies were included in the meta-analysis. In all the studies, only the immediate bond strength was evaluated. The bond strength of the materials was improved by the application of NaOCl or papain prior to enamel etching with phosphoric acid (p ≤ 0.006). None of the deproteinizing agents had a significant effect when applied after etching with phosphoric acid (p ≥ 0.27)., Conclusions: Based on in vitro studies, deproteinization with sodium hypochlorite or papain-based agents increases the immediate bond strength of resin-based materials to enamel only when used prior to phosphoric-acid etching.

Purpose: To evaluate the in vitro bond strength of universal adhesive systems to indirect substrates., Material and Methods: Two reviewers performed a literature search up to March 2018 in seven databases: PubMed, Web of Science, SciELO, Scopus, LILACS, IBECS, and BBO. The review included studies that compared the bond strength of universal adhesives and well-established material-specific primers to indirect substrates: lithium disilicate ceramic, yttrium-stabilized zirconium dioxide ceramic, leucite-reinforced ceramic, feldspathic porcelain, polymer infiltrated ceramic material, resin composite or metal alloys. Analyses were carried out using RevMan 5.3.5. A global comparison was performed with the standardized mean difference using a random-effects models at a significance level of p < 0.05., Results: A total of 45 studies were included in the qualitative analysis, and the meta-analysis was performed with 42 studies. Bond strength to glass-based ceramics and alloys was improved with the use of a specific-primer as separate step before the bonding procedures (lithium disilicate, p < 0.001; alloys, p < 0.001). The bond strength to zirconium substrates was improved with the use of universal adhesives (p < 0.001). For bond strength to composite resin as indirect substrate, universal adhesives performed in a manner similar to that of the material-specific primer (p = 0.11)., Conclusions: The clinical procedure of luting zirconia and resin composite restorations could be simplified by using single-bottle universal adhesives. However, the ability of universal adhesives to achieve an adequate and durable bond to glass-based ceramics and alloys appears to be limited., (© 2020 by the American College of Prosthodontists.)

This study evaluated the effect of different adhesive protocols on the shear bond strength (SBS) of bulk-fill resin composite repaired with bulk-fill or conventional composite. Cylindrical bulk-fill resin composite specimens were prepared and allocated into groups according to the bonding strategy: no treatment, Silane+Scotch Bond Multipurpose (S+SBMP), Tetric N Bond Universal, and Single Bond Universal. Following bonding strategy, bulk-fill or conventional composite buildups were performed. After 24 h of storage in distilled water at 37°C, shear force was applied to the interface using a universal testing machine. The data were analyzed by two-way ANOVA and Tukey test (α=0.05). SBS was influenced by the bonding strategy and the composite used (p<0.001). Irrespective of the composite used, the group S+SBMP yielded the highest SBS values (p<0.001). Repair bond strength of bulk-fill composites can be improved by using a silane coupling agent followed by a hydrophobic resin.

Objectives: To evaluate the micro-tensile bond strength to dentin (μTBS), the degree of conversion (DC) and nanoleakage expression (NL) of eight dental adhesives considering their expiry date (as-received, half-life and or end of shelf-life) after shelf-life simulation., Methods: Five universal adhesives (Single Bond Universal, SBU; Tetric Bond Universal, TBU; OneCoat Universal, OCU; OptiBond Universal, OBU; and Prime&Bond Elect, P&B), two two-step self-etch adhesives (Clearfil SE, CSE; and AdheSE, ASE) and one two-step etch-and-rinse adhesive (Adper Singlebond 2, ASB) were evaluated. Shelf-life was simulated by storing the materials in an acclimatization chamber for different periods of time. The μTBS was tested in accordance with ISO/TS 11,405. DC was evaluated by means of FTIR spectroscopy. NL was evaluated after ammoniacal silver challenge. The significance level of α=0.05 was used for all statistical analyses., Results: The μTBS to dentin of TBU, P&B, ASE, and ASB adhesive systems remained stable throughout the shelf-life periods evaluated, while for SBU, OCU, OBU, and CSE, decreased significantly after evaluation in the 'half-life' or 'end of shelf-life' condition (p<0.05). Except for P&B, ASE and OBU, the degree of conversion significantly decreased after the shelf-life simulation (p<0.05). OCU, ASE, and CSE showed significantly increased percentage of silver deposition within the adhesive layer (p<0.05)., Significance: Storing conditions and progressively longer storage time affect the performance of universal adhesives systems., (Copyright © 2019 The Academy of Dental Materials. Purpose: To evaluate through a systematic review and meta-analysis whether the immediate and long-term bonding performance of universal adhesives would be improved by prior acid etching., Materials and Methods: Two reviewers performed a literature search up to April 2018 in eight databases: PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, SciELO, Scopus, LILACS, IBECS, and BBO. Only studies that evaluated the dentin or enamel bond strength of universal adhesives using a self-etch or etch-and-rinse strategy were included. Analyses were carried out using RevMan 5.3.5 (The Nordic Cochrane Centre, The Cochrane Collaboration, Copenhagen, Denmark). A global analysis comparing self-etch or etch-and-rinse strategies and the influence of aging on bonding performance was performed with random-effects models at a significance level of p < 0.05., Results: A total of 59 in vitro studies were included in the meta-analysis. The enamel bond strength of universal adhesives was improved by the etch-and-rinse approach (p < 0.05). In dentin, this effect was observed for ultra-mild and intermediately strong universal adhesives (p < 0.05). Irrespective of the strategy employed, intermediately strong adhesives showed a decrease in bond strength after all types of aging. This effect was also observed for ultra--mild universal adhesives used in the etch-and-rinse approach (p < 0.05). Mild universal adhesives showed bond strength stability in both strategies (p > 0.05)., Conclusions: The in vitro evidence suggests that bonding performance of mild universal adhesives can be improved by using the selective enamel-etch strategy. Mild universal adhesives seem to be the more stable materials, in both etch-and-rinse or self-etch strategies.

Purpose: To evaluate the bond strength to dentin produced by experimental adhesives formulated with an elastomeric methacrylate monomer (EMM) and an alternative initiator system based on a Thioxanthone derivative (QTX)., Materials and Methods: A self-etching primer was used. For the bonding resin, a model adhesive (G1) was formulated containing bis-GMA/TEG-DMA/HEMA (co-monomeric blend) + CQ/EDAB (initiator system). The other groups were formulated by adding to this formulation: EMM only (G2), QTX (G3), or EMM and QTX (G4). Clearfil SE Bond was used as the commercial control group. Fifty bovine teeth (n = 5) were restored with each one of the five adhesives. After restorative procedures, half of the specimens were stored in distilled water at 37°C for 24 h. The other half was fixed on a metal stub and subjected to 200,000 mechanical (50 N loading at 2 Hz frequency) and 1000 thermal cycles (5°C and 55°C). Afterwards, specimens were serially sectioned into beams and tested in tension until fracture. Bond strengths were statistically analyzed by two-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (α = 5%)., Results: After 24 h, significantly higher µTBS was observed for the formulation containing EMM and QTX (G4) when compared to Clearfil SE Bond (p < 0.05). No significant differences in µTBS were detected among the experimental groups after 24 h (p>0.05). After thermomechanical cycling, no significant differences were observed among groups., Conclusion: The addition of EMM and QTX can be considered as possible alternative in dental adhesive formulations.

Objectives: This study describes the synthesis of piperonyl methacrylate (PipM) and evaluates its effect when used as coinitiator in the photoinitiated radical polymerization of experimental adhesive resins., Methods: PipM was synthetized through an esterification reaction and characterized by FTIR and 1 H NMR spectroscopy. Adhesive resins containing camphorquinone as photoinitiator and PipM or ethyl-4-dimethyl amine benzoate (EDAB) as coinitiators were formulated. Scotchbond Multipurpose (SBMP) adhesive was used as commercial reference. All materials were analyzed for polymerization kinetics, flexural strength, elastic modulus, water sorption/solubility, shear bond strength to bovine enamel and dentin, characterization of hybrid layer by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), microbiological direct contact test, and cytotoxicity., Results: The adhesive with PipM presented higher degree of conversion and lower sorption/solubility when compared with other groups. Shear bond strength to enamel and dentin were similar for PipM and EDAB materials. The percentage of cellular viability was close to 100% and similar in the experimental groups and the commercial reference., Conclusions: PipM presented similar or superior performance to the tertiary amine used as control, representing a potential alternative coinitiator for photopolymerizable dental materials., Clinical Significance: PipM could be potentially useful in the formulations of adhesive systems with enhanced chemical properties, which could mean improvement in the longevity of composite resin restorations., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Ltd. This study evaluated the anti-antibiofilm potential of silver methacrylate (Ag) or di-n-butyldimethacrylatetin (Sn) in experimental adhesive systems. Ag and Sn methacrylates were incorporated at 0.5mol%, 1mol% and 2mol% in an adhesive resin. The anti-antibiofilm potential, degree of conversion (DC), microtensile bond strength (μTBS), water sorption/solubility (W SR/SL ), bonded interfaces pattern (SEM), cytotoxicity and leaching of Ag and Sn ions were evaluated. Data were statistically analyzed considering α = 0.05. Only Ag at 2% affected DC and μTBS. Ag at 1% and 2% and Sn at 1% and 2% showed anti-biofilm potential against Mutans streptococci. Ag at 1% and 2% and Sn at 2% showed a statistically significant difference to the control in W SR/SL (p < 0.05). The additions of metal methacrylate did not affect cell viability, being the adhesive resins statistically similar to controls. Leached metals of Ag were more than 100x higher than for Sn. Between the concentration tested, Ag and Sn methacrylate at 1% presented an anti-biofilm effect without altering the mechanical properties evaluated., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier Ltd. Objectives: The aim of this study was to synthesize an alternative acidic monomer (polypropylene glycol phosphate methacrylate--Poly-P) to constitute experimental two-step self-etch adhesive systems and also to evaluate its influence on the pH and microshear bond strength (μSBS) to enamel., Methods: Primers containing Poly-P (10, 15, 30 or 50wt.%), HEMA, ethanol, and water were prepared and allocated in subgroups according to a buffered or non-buffered pH. One experimental control and one commercial (Clearfill™ SE Bond) references were used. μSBS protocol was performed at human enamel, followed by mechanical testing. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was performed after each primer application. Data was analysed by one-way Kruskal-Wallis and Student-Newman-Keuls tests (p<0.05) and by linear regression predictive models., Results: As greater the Poly-P content, the lower the primer's pH. Buffered groups showed lower μSBS values than non-buffered groups. Groups with Poly-P content equal or higher than 30wt.% showed similar μSBS results when compared to the controls. SEM images demonstrated that primers with high Poly-P content etched enamel with prisms exposure., Conclusions: The pH of the primer was directly influenced by the concentration of acidic monomer, which directly affected the adhesion to enamel. Both the acidity and the type of acid-functional monomer present in the adhesive influenced the bond strength results., Clinical Significance: Poly-P synthesis was easy and effective, and considering the good bond strength results obtained, this acid-functional monomer may be potentially used in the formulation of self-etch dental adhesive systems., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier Ltd. Objective: This study investigated the effect of phosphoric acid concentration on microshear bond strength (μSBS) of an etch-and-rinse adhesive system to demineralized irradiated enamel., Background Data: Er:YAG laser irradiation may increase acid resistance of enamel; however, its use is associated with reduced bonding effectiveness., Materials and Methods: Three experimental etching agents and one bonding agent were fabricated. Enamel pretreatment was tested in two levels (bur and laser) and phosphoric acid was tested in four levels (control and at 35, 45, or 55%). Commercially available phosphoric acid and a bonding agent were used as control. Enamel samples were submitted to a pH-cycling model to induce demineralization. Half of the exposed demineralized enamel area was prepared with diamond bur and half was prepared with an Er:YAG laser (λ=2.94 μm, 300 mJ, 2 Hz). Specimens were randomly allocated to receive different acid etching concentrations and either the experimental or the commercial adhesive system. Microshear bond strength and the adhesive remnant index (ARI) scores were determined. μSBS's data were evaluated by two way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey's test. Kruskal-Wallis followed by Dunn's method and Mann-Whitney test were used for ARI comparisons (α=5%)., Results: For μSBS, no significant difference among the groups was found, either for phosphoric acid concentration or surface preparation. For ARI scores, statistically higher resin retention was found for lased groups (p<0.001)., Conclusions: The increase of phosphoric acid concentration did not impair bond strength regardless of surface preparation; however, increased retention was found when demineralized enamel was prepared with laser.

Objectives: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the hypothesis that replacing 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) for surfactant dimethacrylates (SD) does not affect the immediate and long-term microtensile bond strength (μTBS) of experimental two-step self-etch HEMA-free adhesive systems applied on dentin., Materials and Methods: Five experimental HEMA-free two-step self-etching systems containing different SD (ethoxylated bisphenol A diglycidyl dimethacrylate (Bis-EMA 10, B10), Bis-EMA 30 (B30), poly-ethyleneglycol (400) dimethacrylate (PEG 400, P400), PEG 1000 (P1000), and PEG 400 urethane dimethacrylate (UDMA) (UP400)) and a HEMA-containing system (control) (HA) were formulated. Specimens were subjected to the μTBS test after 24 h and 6 and 12 months of storage. Data (in megapascals) were analyzed by Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn tests (α = 0.05)., Results: Medians of the μTBS data after 24 h of storage are: HA = 57.2(A), B10 = 26.2(BC), B30 = 24.0(C), P400 = 32.6(BC), P1000 = 37.3(B), and UP400 = 57.9(A); after 6 months are: HA = 47.9(A), B10 = 18.5(B), B30 = 7.8(C), P400 = 16.1(B), P1000 = 14.6(BC), and UP400 = 51.6(A); and after 12 months are: HA = 31.2(A), B10 = 15.2(B), B30 = 9.0(B), P400 = 9.1(B), P1000 = 13.3(B), and UP400 = 35.7(A). Between the HEMA-free groups, the adhesive system formulated with PEG 400 UDMA produced similar μTBS to the HEMA-containing group. Also, the storage of specimens decreased the μTBS (p < 0.05)., Conclusion: Replacing HEMA for PEG 400 UDMA in an adhesive system formulation generated a satisfactory μTBS to dentin., Clinical Relevance: Surfactant dimethacrylates have a potential use in the development of HEMA-free self-etching adhesive systems, which are more chemically stable.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the cytotoxicity and 1-year dentin bond stability of solvated etch-and-rinse dental adhesives based on tetrahydrofuran (THF), acetone, or ethanol, containing water or not., Materials and Methods: Seven primers were prepared using the following solvents: THF, acetone, ethanol, water, THF/water, acetone/water, and ethanol/water. Bovine dentin was used, and specimens for microtensile bond strength (μTBS) test were prepared. Specimens were tested after storage in distilled water for 24 h or 1 year. Cytotoxicity of the solvents was evaluated in 3T3/NIH mouse fibroblasts using a colorimetric 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide assay after exposure for 24 h., Results: No significant differences were detected among solvents after storage for 24 h, except for the water-based group, which showed the lowest μTBS values. After storage for 1 year, the THF-based adhesive system resulted in more stable bonds. Yet, THF showed an intermediate cytotoxicity when compared with the other solvents, being less toxic than phosphate monomer and similar to 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate., Conclusion: THF seems to be a suitable solvent for adhesive systems., Clinical Relevance: THF is a promising solvent that can be used to improve dentin bond stability.

This study evaluated the influence of ethanol/water ratios on the bond strength to dentin of experimental two-step, self-etch adhesive systems. Self-etch primers were prepared with constant 40 mass % of solvents. The ethanol/water ratios tested were 7:1 (P1), 3:1 (P2), and 1:1 (P3); primers with only ethanol (PE) or water (PW) as solvent were also tested. The bond strength to the dentin was investigated through a microtensile bond strength test. Resin-dentin beam-shaped specimens were obtained and tested after 24 h, 6 months, and 1 year of storage in water at 37°C. The hybridization morphology was analyzed using SEM. For bond strength at 24 h, PE = P1, P1 = P2, and P2, P3 and PW > PE. After 6 months, PE = P1 < P2, P3 and PW. After 1 year, no significant differences among the materials were detected. No significant differences among the periods were detected for PE. For P1, 24 h > 6 months = 1 year. For P2, P3 and PW, 24 h = 6 months > 1 year. For PE and P1, adhesive failures were predominant at 24 h, mixed or adhesive failures after 6 months, and premature debonding was predominant after 1 year. For P2, mixed failures were predominant at 24 h and 6 months, and premature debonding after 1 year. For P3 and PW, mixed failures were predominant at all storage periods. The SEM analysis revealed no clear differences in the hybridization patterns yielded by the water-based primers; PE showed formation of irregular resin tags.

To compare the resin-dentin bond degradation of 10 contemporary etch-and-rinse adhesive systems after one year of water storage, 100 bovine incisors were randomly separated into 10 groups and their superficial coronal dentin was exposed. According to manufacturers' instructions, dentin surfaces were bonded with one of seven two-step etch-and-rinse adhesives or one of three three-step etch-and-rinse adhesives. Composite buildups were constructed incrementally. Restored teeth were sectioned to obtain sticks (0.5 mm²). The specimens were subjected to a microtensile bond strength test after storage in distilled water (at 37°C) for one year. Data (MPa) were analyzed using Kruskal-Wallis and Tukey's tests at α = 0.05. Of the adhesives tested, One Step, All Bond 2, and Optibond FL attained the highest bond strength to dentin after one year in water storage, while Magic Bond DE and Master Bond presented a high number of premature debonded flaws.

Objective: To evaluate the influence of tetrahydrofuran (THF) on the resin-to-dentin microtensile bond strength (microTBS) after water storage, for 24h and 6 months, and to compare its behavior with that of traditional solvents., Methods: Seven versions of monomer/solvent mixtures (primers) were prepared using the following solvent and water combinations: (1) THF, (2) acetone, (3) ethanol, (4) water, (5) THF/water, (6) acetone/water and (7) ethanol/water. An experimental adhesive resin was also synthesized to compare adhesive systems with the different primers. Forty-two bovine incisors, randomly separated into seven groups, had their superficial coronal dentin exposed. After acid-etching and rinsing, the excess water was removed from the surface with absorbent paper. Each experimental primer was applied with agitation (30s) followed by a mild air stream (10s). The experimental adhesive resin was applied and light-activated (20s). Resin composite restorations were constructed incrementally. Restored teeth were stored in distilled water at 37 degrees C (24h) and sectioned to obtain sticks with an area of 0.5mm(2). Half the specimens were subjected to the microTBS test immediately after being cut and the other half were tested after 6 months of water storage. Data (MPa) were analyzed by two-way ANOVA (solvent type and storage time as factors) and Tukey-Kramer's test at alpha=0.05., Results: Factors and interaction showed a statistical effect. After 6 months storage, acetone groups and primers containing THF showed similar microTBS to initial means., Significance: THF seems to be a promising solvent for use in dental adhesive systems, maintaining bond strength on dentin substrate after storage.

Purpose: This study evaluated the resin-dentin microtensile bond strength (microTBS) of ethanol/water- (Single Bond, [SB] 3M ESPE), ethanol- (Optibond Solo Plus, [OP] Kerr) and acetone-based (One-Step, [OS] Bisco) two-step etch-and-rinse adhesives in the presence or absence of their respective solvents to dry and wet dentin. The ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and the degree of conversion (DC) of the materials were also evaluated., Materials and Methods: Solvent-based and solvent-free adhesives were vigorously applied to occlusal dentin surfaces after phosphoric acid etching. Composite crowns were built up incrementally. After 24-h water storage, the specimens were sectioned in x and y directions to obtain bonded sticks (1.0 mm2) which were immediately tested in tension (0.5 mm/min). The data were analyzed by three-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (alpha = 0.05). For the UTS measurement, hourglass-shaped specimens of adhesives were prepared and tested in tension. FTIR analysis was used to verify the DC of adhesives. The data from UTS and FTIR was analyzed by two-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (alpha = 0.05)., Results: High microTBS values were obtained for SB and OS, regardless of the presence or absence of solvents or the moisture condition of dentin. A lower microTBS mean was observed for the solvent-free OP compared to its solvent-based version. Significantly higher UTS values were obtained for all adhesives after removal of solvents. The DC of OS in the solvent-based condition was lower than SB and OP. After removal of solvents, only OS showed a significant increase in the DC., Conclusion: The presence of solvents was not essential for SB and OS to achieve high bond strength values to both dry and wet dentin when applied under vigorous application.

This study investigated the influence of a papain-based gel (Papacárie) for chemo-mechanical caries removal on bond strength to dentin. Human molars were assigned to the following groups: Group 1: sound teeth were flattened to expose dentin; Group 2: after flattening of surfaces, the papain-based gel was applied on the sound dentin; Group 3: overlying enamel from carious teeth was removed and mechanical excavation of dentin was conducted; Group 4: chemo-mechanical excavation of carious dentin was conducted using the papain-based gel. The Prime&Bond NT or Clearfil SE Bond adhesive systems were used for restorative procedures. A microtensile bond strength test was performed, and the modes of failure were determined under SEM. The data were submitted to two-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (p < or = 0.05). No significant differences were observed between the sound dentin groups. For both excavation methods, Clearfil presented a significantly higher bond strength than Prime&Bond NT. Also, for Clearfil, the mechanically excavated samples disclosed a significantly higher bond strength than the chemo-mechanically ones. For Prime&Bond NT, no significant differences were detected between the excavation methods. Predominance of mixed failures for the sound substrate and of adhesive failures for the carious dentin one was detected. The bond strength to carious dentin of the self-etching system was negatively affected by chemo-mechanical excavation using the papain-based gel.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the kinetics of conversion of Scotchbond Multi-purpose Plus (3M ESPE, St Paul, MN) and Prime&Bond NT (Dentsply De Trey, Konstanz, Germany) used in light-cured, self-cured, or dual-cured versions. The adhesive systems were used in the light-cured version (without the use of chemical initiator) or mixed with its respective chemical initiator either with light activation (dual-cured) or not (self-cured). The degree of conversion (DC) was monitored as a function of time during 5 minutes with a Fourier transform infrared spectrometer equipped with an attenuated total reflectance device. Light-cured and dual-cured modes of Scotchbond Multi-purpose Plus presented the highest DC at 5 minutes. The addition of the self-cure activator (dual-cured mode) to Prime&Bond NT reduced the DC. For the self-cured versions, only the Scotchbond Multi-purpose Plus presented any polymerization reaction at 5 minutes. For the two bonding systems tested, it appears that light curing of the adhesive is important in order to reach a high DC in the first moments after the bonding procedure.

Purpose: To investigate the influence of different water concentrations in the solvents of self-etching primers on microtensile bond strength (LTBS) of an experimental adhesive system., Materials and Methods: Five experimental self-etching primers with 0, 5, 10, 20 and 40 (wt%) water as solvent were formulated. An experimental adhesive resin (AD-50) was also synthesized to create one experimental self-etching adhesive system. Clearfil SE Bond (CSEB) was used as the commercial reference. Sixty bovine incisors were randomly separated into 6 groups. Buccal enamel was removed to expose the superficial coronal dentin; this surface was polished wet to create a standardized smear layer. After rinsing, water was removed, leaving the surface visibly dried. The dentin surfaces were etched with primer and air dried, adhesive resin was applied and photoactivated, then the composite resin restoration was placed. After storage for 24 h, the specimens were sectioned with a cooled diamond saw at low speed. Microtensile bond strength was measured and data were analyzed with one-way ANOVA/Tukey's test (alpha = 0.05)., Results: ANOVA showed that primer composition was a significant factor for bond strength. There was no significant difference in bond strengths between the primers with a water concentration of 40% (53.9 +/- 12.7 MPa), 20% (51.1 +/- 11.5 MPa, and 10% (47.5 +/- 11.4 MPa), and CSEB (50.7 +/- 9.8 MPa). The groups with 5% (38.6 +/- 12.9 MPa) and 0% (31.5 +/- 7.5 MPa) water presented similar bond strengths amongst themselves but were statistically significantly lower than that of the other groups., Conclusion: The water concentration in the primer solvent exercises a significant influence on the bond strength of this experimental self-etching adhesive system.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to synthesize an acidic monomer using an alternative synthetic pathway and to evaluate the influence of the acidic monomer concentration on the microtensile bond strength to dentin., Methods: The intermediary 5-hydroxypentyl methacrylate (HPMA) was synthesized through methacrylic acid esterification with 1,5-pentanediol, catalyzed by p-toluenesulfonic acid. To displace the reaction balance, the water generated by esterification was removed by three different methods: anhydrous sodium sulfate; molecular sieves or azeotropic distillation. In the next step, a phosphorus pentoxide (4.82 mmol) slurry was formed in cold acetone and 29 mmol of HPMA was slowly added by funnel addition. After the reaction ended, solvent was evaporated and the product was characterized by 1HNMR and FTIR. The phosphate monomer was introduced in a self-etch primer at concentrations of 0, 15, 30, 50, 70 and 100 wt%. Clearfil SE Bond was used as commercial reference. Microtensile bond strength to dentin was evaluated 24h after the bonding procedures, followed by fracture analysis (n=20). Data was submitted to ANOVA and Tukey's post hoc test., Results: The highest yield was obtained (62%) when azeotropic distillation was used, while the reaction with molecular sieves was not feasible. The phosphoric moiety attachment to the monomer was successfully performed with a quantitative yield that reached around 100%. The acidic monomer concentration significantly affected the bond strength and the highest mean (55.1+/-12.8 MPa) was obtained when 50% of acidic monomer was used., Conclusion: The synthesis pathways described in the present study appear to be a viable alternative for developing phosphate monomers.

Since there is a lack of information on the surface properties of composite restorations achieved with standard polishing procedures after aging processes, this study evaluated the effects of immediate (IM) and delayed (DE) polishing on the surface roughness (Ra), microhardness (KHN) and microleakage (ML) of microfilled (Filtek A110) and hybrid (Filtek Z250) resin composites after one-year storage. Standardized preparations were made on the buccal surface of 256 bovine teeth, where half were restored with each composite. For each composite, the specimens were randomly allocated to two subgroups. The first group (IM) was polished immediately after gross finishing using three different systems/techniques (n=16): Sof-Lex, Flexicups and Flexicups + Jiffy Polishing Brush + Flexibuffs (sequential), then stored for three weeks in saline. The DE group was stored for two weeks, polished with the same systems and stored for one week. From each subgroup, eight specimens were assessed after three weeks regarding Ra, KHN and ML (baseline), andthe eight remaining specimens were stored for one year before analysis. The data were analyzed (alpha=0.05) with ANOVA, paired Student's t-test (Ra and KHN) or Kruskal-Wallis and Signed Rank tests (microleakage). After one year, microfilled resin composite specimens showed the lowest Ra and KHN (p<0.05). N o differencein microleakage was observed among the different groups (p>0.05). The sequential technique provided the lowest roughness and Sof-Lex the lowest hardness (p<0.05). IM showed similar or better performance than DE for ML and Ra (p<0.05). In conclusion, aging increased the composites Ra and ML in all experimental conditions (p<0.05).

Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the solubility and the fluoride release of different materials used for orthodontic band cementation in different solutions and at different times., Materials and Methods: Three materials were selected: Ultra Band-Lok (UBL); RelyX (RLX) and Ketac-Cem (KTC). Sixteen standard samples from each material were prepared, according to the manufacturers' instructions. The samples were stored in two different solutions (n = 8): 0.9% saline solution (pH 7.0) and 0.1 mol/l lactic acid (pH 4.0). The storage solutions were changed after 24 h and after 7, 15 and 30 days. The fluoride release was determined with an ion-specific electrode (Analion). For the solubility evaluation, the formula Wsl = (m1-m2)/V was used to determine the loss of mass. Data were submitted for statistical analysis using the non-parametric Kruskal-Wallis test., Results: With respect to the solubility, immersion in lactic acid increased the solubility when compared with saline solution (P < 0.01). In both the solutions, there were differences among materials (P < 0.01) with the following rankings: UBL < RLX < KTC for lactic acid and UBL < RLX < KTC for saline solution. The ranking of fluoride release was UBL < KTC < RLX. In the two tested solutions, RLX exhibited the highest fluoride release (P < 0.01), whereas KTC showed more fluoride release than that of UBL (P < 0.05). Fluoride release decreased over time and the storage solution influenced the fluoride-releasing capacity of some materials., Conclusions: It was found that fluoride release was influenced by storage solution, materials and immersion time. Materials and storage solution were the significant factors for solubility.

Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the microleakage of seven adhesive systems on two substrates (enamel and dentin)., Methods and Materials: Class V cavities were performed in buccal and lingual surfaces of 56 bovine incisors. The cervical margin was located in dentin and the incisal margin in enamel. The specimens were randomly divided into seven groups (n=16), according to the adhesive system employed: Single Bond; Excite; One Step Plus; Gluma One Bond; Magic Bond; One Up Bond F; and One Coat Bond. The cavities were incrementally filled with a hybrid composite Filtek Z250 and polymerized with a XL 3000 light curing unit. After polishing, the specimens were submitted to thermal cycling followed by dye immersion. Leakage was evaluated under magnification (40X) based on a standard ranking. Data were subjected to statistical analysis (Kruskal-Wallis)., Results: Enamel margins exhibited lower leakage than dentin margins (p<0.01). The majority of the specimens were leakage-free and materials performed similarly. Conversely, in dentin most of the specimens exhibited the highest leakage degree and significant differences among materials (p<0.05) were found, with Excite exhibiting the lowest leakage degree. It was concluded enamel provided better sealing and the adhesive system was a significant factor only in dentin.

This study verified the relationship between the volume and microleakage of conventional and bonded amalgam restorations. Also, the microleakage influence of intermediate materials, substrates and the direction of sectioning was investigated. Fifty-six bovine incisors were selected. Standard Class V cavities were prepared in buccal and lingual surfaces. For each tooth, two cavity sizes were prepared, corresponding to two cavity volumes: one larger (A) and the other smaller (B). The cervical wall was located in cementum/dentin and the incisal wall in enamel. The teeth were distributed in four groups (n=28) according to the intermediate material employed (glass-ionomer cement, resin cement, adhesive system and copal varnish-control). The materials were applied following manufacturers' directions. After restoration, the teeth were submitted to thermal cycling. They were then immersed in a dye solution and sectioned in two directions inciso-cervical (IC) and mesio-distal (MD) sections to evaluate the microleakage. Data were subjected to non-parametric statistical analysis (Wilcoxon's paired test and Kruskal-Wallis test). No significant difference was found between the two cavity sizes. Leakage in enamel was statistically lower than in the cementum/dentin interface (p < 0.05). In some situations, glass-ionomer or resin cement lined amalgam restorations presented less dye leakage than copal varnish lined restorations (p < 0.05). No significant difference was observed in microleakage between IC or MD sectioning. Within the limitations of this study, it was concluded that cavity size and direction of section were not significant factors for microleakage, while substrate and intermediate materials had a significant effect on the sealing ability in amalgam restorations.

The aim of this study was to verify the ability of different adhesive materials to prevent microleakage in bonded amalgam restorations. Standard cavities were prepared in both buccal and lingual surfaces of 35 bovine incisors. The gingival wall was located in cementum/dentin and the occlusal wall in enamel. Teeth (n=35) were divided into 5 groups, according to material employed (one glass-ionomer cement, two resin cements, one adhesive system, and Copalex varnish as a control). Following restoration, the teeth were submitted to thermal cycling. The teeth were subsequently immersed in methylene blue dye and sectioned to allow assessment of microleakage. Non-parametric statistical analysis indicated that all materials demonstrated less leakage than the control group (p<0.01). No leakage was found using the resin-modified glass-ionomer cement, which was significantly different from the other adhesive materials (p<0.05). Leakage in enamel was lower than in cementum/dentin margins. It was concluded that bonded amalgam was an effective technique, since all materials prevented microleakage in enamel and cementum/dentin, when compared to the control group, except Panavia in cementum/dentin margins.

Objective: To evaluate the pulp response to direct capping with self-etching adhesive systems using sodium hypochlorite as a hemostatic agent. Method and Materials: Twenty-six human third molars scheduled for extraction were selected from undergraduate students of dentistry. Class I cavities with pulp exposures were performed. To control bleeding, 2.5% sodium hypochlorite was used for 20 seconds, followed by washing with saline solution. The pulp exposures were capped with calcium hydroxide (n = 10) or adhesive system (n = 16). All cavities were restored with adhesive system and composite resin. Half of the samples of each capping material were extracted after 30 days and the remaining after 90 days. The samples were prepared for histological analysis (hematoxylin-eosin) and bacterial detection (Brown & Hopps) and evaluated according to standard ranking. Data were submitted to statistical analysis (Mann-Whitney test). Results: There was a significant difference (P < .05) only in relation to dentin barrier formation. Pulps dressed with calcium hydroxide showed dentin barrier formation in all specimens, obliterating the exposure site. No inflammatory response was associated with material. In the experimental group, after 30 days, there was an attempt for healing with reparative dentin deposition, presenting a mild to moderate inflammatory infiltrate. Similar findings were found after 90 days, decreasing the inflammatory response. Bacteria were not detected in any specimen evaluated. Sodium hypochlorite was effective for hemostatic control. Conclusion: Calcium hydroxide produced better biological performance than the self-etching adhesive, and sodium hypochlorite did not interfere with the pulp repair. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: A systematic review was conducted to determine whether the etch-and-rinse or self-etching mode is the best protocol for dentin and enamel adhesion by universal adhesives. Data: This report followed the PRISMA Statement. A total of 10 articles were included in the meta-analysis. Sources: Two reviewers performed a literature search up to October 2014 in eight databases: PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, BBO, SciELO, LILACS, IBECS and The Cochrane Library. Study selection: In vitro studies evaluating the bond strength of universal adhesives to dentin and/or enamel by the etch-and-rinse and self-etch strategies were eligible to be selected. Statistical analyses were conducted using RevMan 5.1 (The Cochrane Collaboration, Copenhagen, Denmark). A global comparison was performed with random-effects models at a significance level of p < 0.05. Results:The analysis of dentin micro-tensile bond strength showed no statistically significant difference between the etch-and-rinse and self-etch strategies for mild universal adhesives (p≥0.05). However, for the ultra-mild All-Bond Universal adhesive, the etch-and-rinse strategy was significantly different than the self-etch mode in terms of dentin micro-tensile bond strength, as well as in the global analysis of enamel micro-tensile and micro-shear bond strength (p≤0.05). Conclusions: The enamel bond strength of universal adhesives is improved with prior phosphoric acid etching. However, this effect was not evident for dentin with the use of mild universal adhesives with the etch-and-rinse strategy. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of functionalizing a dental adhesive resin with YbF3/SiO2 fillers for use as radiopacifiers. Particles of YbF3/SiO2 were obtained with the high-energy mechanical milling method and characterized by both physical and chemical methods. After characterization, the particles were sieved and silanized prior to being incorporated into an adhesive resin. The stability of the particle suspension was then evaluated. After light activation, the radiopacity, degree of conversion, flexural strength and elastic modulus were determined. The dental adhesive resins with 10 and 15 wt% of filler provided satisfactory radiopacity, while flexural strength and elastic modulus were not affected. The degree of conversion was statistically lower than that of the control (p<0.05). The method used for incorporating the tested ytterbium fluoride/silicon dioxide particles at concentrations of 10 and 15 wt% was shown to be feasible for the development of a radiopaque dental adhesive system. This study evaluated the performance of different bonding tests on the bond strength of three adhesive systems to dentin. Forty-eight bovine incisors were used in the study, which were allocated in two groups according to the bond strength test performed: microtensile (µTBS) or microshear (µSBS). Also, each group was divided in three subgroups according to the adhesive system applied: Single Bond (SB), Prime & Bond (PB) and XP Bond (XPB) (n=8). The teeth were prepared according to each bond strength test protocol, and then the specimens were tested in an universal testing machine (EMIC). The data were submitted to two-way ANOVA (bond strength test and adhesive system type factors) and Tukey's post hoc test (α=0.05). The µTBS results were higher for all the adhesives when compared to the µSBS ones. Within the µTBS results, SB showed higher bond strength than PB and XPB, which showed similar adhesive performance among each other; within the µSBS results, all the adhesives presented similar bond strength values to dentin. The µTBS test detected differences between the adhesive systems evaluated; in contrast, the µSBS test was less discriminating in evaluating the adhesive performance of the materials tested. Abstract: This study evaluated the effect of the concentration of acidic functional monomer on the dentin bond stability of a model two-step, self-etch adhesive system. Six self-etch primers were formulated using hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA), 1,3-glycerol dimethacrylate phosphate (GDMA-P), ethanol and water. Different mass concentrations of GDMA-P were tested: 0, 15, 30, 50, 70 or 100% (primers labeled P0–100). The pH of the solutions was measured. The bonding resin was composed of (di)methacrylates. Bond strength to bovine dentin was assessed through a microtensile bond test. The beam specimens were stored in distilled water, at 37°C, for 24h, 6 months or 1 year. Data were statistically analyzed and failure modes classified under magnification. The increase in acidic monomer concentration was associated with an exponential decrease in pH (R 2 =0.999; P<0.001). All specimens debonded prematurely for the primers P 0, P 70 and P 100. After 24h, the bond strengths for P 50>P 30=P 15. After 6 months and 1 year, P 50=P 30>P 15. The bond strength after 6 months was similar to 24h for P 15 and P 50, but significantly lower after 1 year. P 30 showed no differences in bond strength over the 1-year storage period. A predominance of mixed failures was detected for all primers at 24h. After 6 months, P 30 and P 50 showed a predominance of adhesive failures. After 1 year, the predominant failure mode for all primers was cohesive within dentin. In conclusion, a mass fraction of 50% of phosphate monomer is a limit to be added to self-etch primers; a more stable longevity of the bonds was obtained with the primer with 30% of phosphate methacrylate. Objective: To evaluate the influence of Bis-EMA 30 on the resin-to-dentin microtensile bond strength (microTBS) and structural reliability of the experimental three-step etch-and-rinse adhesive systems.Methods: Five experimental primers containing different dimethacrylate monomer concentrations (0, 10, 20, 40, 60 wt% of the Bis-EMA 30, P0.P60) added to acid monomer and solvents (ethanol/water), and a resin bond (Bis-GMA/TEGDMA, 50/50 wt%) were formulated. The adhesive system Scotchbond MultiPurpose (SBMP, 3M ESPE) was tested as commercial reference. Sixty bovine incisors were randomly separated into six groups, and their superficial coronal dentin was exposed. After acid etching and rinsing, the excess water was removed from the surface with absorbent paper. Each experimental primer was actively applied (30 s), followed by a mild air stream (10 s). The experimental adhesive resin was applied and light activated for 20 s. Resin composite restorations were incrementally built up. The restored teeth were stored in distilled water at 37 degrees C for 24 h, and then sectioned to obtain sticks with a cross-sectional area of approximately 0.5 mm(2), after which 24 specimens per group were subjected to the microTBS test. Data (MPa) were analyzed by One-way ANOVA, Tukey test (alpha=0.05) and Weibull analysis.Results: The P40 group showed microTBS means similar to those of the control (SBMP), whereas both had statistically higher values when compared with the other groups (p<0.001). Moreover, P40 showed higher structural reliability, represented by the high Weibull modulus and characteristic strength values. The lowest microTBS was observed in the P0, P10 and P20 groups, which also had low structural reliability.Significance: Bis-EMA 30 is a promising monomer to be considered as a substitute for HEMA in adhesive system compositions.
