Objectives: To evaluate three temporary luting cements in terms of their restoration loss rates, biological interactions, esthetic properties, and handling characteristics., Materials and Methods: 75 adults requiring fixed prosthodontics voluntarily participated in a single-blind, randomized controlled trial. After preparation, temporary restorations were luted with a randomly selected temporary luting cement (either Provicol QM Plus (PQP), Bifix Temp (BT), or Provicol QM Aesthetic (PQA)). Clinical examinations were performed one to two weeks after cementation. The following criteria were evaluated: tooth vitality, percussion, hypersensitivity, gingival bleeding, odor formation, esthetics, cement handling, removability, cleanability, and retention loss. Antagonistic teeth served as controls. Statistical analysis was performed using the paired t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson's chi-square and Fisher's exact test, where appropriate., Results: The overall loss rate of temporary restorations was 16.0%, showing no cement-specific differences. Postoperative hypersensitivity occurred in 8% of cases regardless of cement type. Esthetic impairment was reported by 31% of the PQP-fixed restorations, compared with 4.0% and 4.2% of the BT and PQA-bonded restorations. Cement application was reported to be easy in 100% of cases, excess removal in 88-96%, depending on the cement used., Conclusions: The choice of luting material affects the esthetic appearance of a temporary restoration and should be considered, particularly in restorations in esthetically demanding areas. Objectives: To compare marginal gap width and depth with different cementation systems, excess removal, and after polishing., Method and Materials: In total, 80 composite crowns were milled, divided into ten groups, and cemented on identical artificial teeth. Eight crowns per group were fixed with (i) zinc phosphate cement (ZnOPh), (ii) glass-ionomer cement (GIC), (iii) resin-reinforced glass-ionomer cement (GIC mod), (iv) dual-curing adhesive composite (Comp dual), or (v) dual-curing self-adhesive composite (Comp SE dual). Excess removal was performed with a scaler after brief light-cure (tack-cure), final light-cure, during rubber or gel phase or by wiping with foam pellet. Curing was completed in chemical, dark cure, or light-curing modus. The specimens were polished and stored in water (37°C). The margins were digitized using a 3D laser-scanning microscope (VK-X100 series, Keyence). The width and the depth of the marginal gap were measured at 10 points between the crown margin and the preparation margin., Results: The width after excess removal varied between 65.1 ± 15.7 µm (Comp dual, wipe, with polishing) and 208.6 ± 266.7 µm (Comp SE dual, dark cure, without polishing). The depth varied between 29.8 ± 22.2 µm (Comp dual, wipe, with polishing) and 89.5 ± 45.2 µm (Comp SE dual, dark cure, without polishing). The impact on gap width and depth was detected for fixation material, excess removal, and polishing., Conclusion: The gap depth and width depend on the luting material and the mode of access removal. Polishing can improve the gap quality, especially for GIC and resin-based systems.

Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the possible ability of dental impression tray adhesives to serve as a transmission medium for bacteria and fungi when reusable adhesive applicators are utilized., Materials and Methods: Ten flasks with tray adhesive were monitored over a period of 12 weeks during clinical use for contamination with bacteria or fungi. Adhesive fluid samples were cultivated on eight different culture media. All grown colonies were identified by using mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF). Isolates without reliable identification were either identified by Rapid ID 32 API-STREP V3.0 or by sequencing the 16S rRNA genes., Results: After 4 weeks, bacterial growth was detected on chocolate blood agar plates in five different samples. The bacterial species were identified as Staphylococcus warnerii, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Staphylococcus pasteuri, Ralstonia insidiosa, and Alloiococcus otitidis. After 8 weeks Streptococcus oralis grew on a blood agar plate. In all samples, no fungi were identified., Conclusions: The disinfectant component of the tested tray adhesive seems to be effective. However, some bacteria survived in the flask for a clinically relevant time, which might result in a potential transmission to a new host., (© 2021 The Authors. Objectives: The aim of this study was to analyse the impact of different clinical conditioning approaches and an ammonium polyfluoride- and trimethoxysilylpropyl methacrylate-based experimental primer for intraoral luting of buccal tubes on silica-based ceramic surfaces., Materials and Methods: A total of 60 leucite-reinforced glass ceramic molar crowns were conditioned using different methods (n = 10): I-roughening, hydrofluoric acid, silane; II-roughening, silane; III-roughening, experimental coupling agent; IV-experimental coupling agent; V-roughening; VI-no treatment. A buccal tube was adhesively luted to the ceramic surface. Subsequently, water storage, thermocycling and chewing simulation were carried out. The shear bond strength (SBS) was determined, and changes in the surface were assessed., Results: All tubes of the control group (group VI) debonded after incubation. The conditioning methods using coupling agents revealed mean values for SBS of 61.56 MPa (group I), 45.53 MPa (group III), 41.65 MPa (group II), and 23.14 MPa (group IV). In groups I-III, both composite residues and cracks/tear-outs were detected., Conclusions: The conditioning of silicate ceramic surfaces with a suitable coupling agent system appears to allow sufficient adhesive luting of buccal tubes. The intraoral luting of fixed appliance elements on silicate ceramic surfaces using an ammonium polyfluoride- and trimethoxysilylpropyl methacrylate-based ceramic primer can withstand orthodontic forces., Clinical Relevance: Ammonium polyfluoride- and trimethoxysilylpropyl methacrylate-based ceramic primers revealed promising results for the intraoral adhesive luting of orthodontic devices to silica-based ceramic crowns.

Objective: Bacterial adhesion on and cytotoxicity of eight luting agents used for implant-supported restorations were investigated., Materials and Method: Surface roughness (Ra), surface free energy (SFE) values and three-dimensional images by atomic-force microscopy of circular specimens were determined. Bacterial suspensions of Streptococcus sanguinis and Streptococcus epidermidis were incubated at 37°C for 2 h. Adhering bacteria were examined with fluorescence dye CytoX-Violet, stained with 4',6-diamidino-2-phenylindole (DAPI) and visualized by fluorescence-microscopy. Cytotoxicity-testing was done with WST-1-tests (water soluble tetrazolium). No significant differences, neither with regard to Ra nor regarding SFE were determined., Results: Adherence of S. sanguinis was less on titanium, TempBondNE and TempBond. TempBond, TempBondNE, RelyX Unicem and Implantlink Semi Classic presented low amounts of S. epidermidis. WST-testing showed high cytotoxic potential of Harvard, Aqualox, TempBondNE and TempBond. No combination of low adherent bacteria with low cytotoxicity was found., Conclusion: From a biological in-vitro perspective, none of the cements may be recommended for implant-supported restorations.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the survival rates and technical failures of removable prostheses (RPs) supported by telescopic double crown (TDC)-retained abutment teeth luted with zinc-phosphate or glass-ionomer cement., Materials and Methods: Clinical records of 577 patients (288 women, 289 men) who received 577 TDC-retained RPs supported by 1,807 abutments at the Department of Prosthodontics of the University Hospital Regensburg, Regensburg, Germany, between 1984 and 2007 were analyzed. The 577 prostheses included 200 attached to telescopic crowns with friction fit (FFs), 62 to conical crowns (CCs), and 315 to parallel-sided telescopic crowns with clearance fit (CFs). Survival probabilities were evaluated for the RPs, loss of cementation of the inner copings, secondary caries, and abutment teeth that required endodontic treatment using the Kaplan-Meier method. A Cox regression analysis determined the impact of covariates such as sex, denture location (maxilla/mandible), Eichner classification, number of abutment teeth, and the type of double crown system used., Results: The 10-year survival probability was 98.8% +/- 0.09% for FFs, 92.9% +/- 0.41% for CCs, and 86.6% +/- 0.05% for CFs. During the observation period, loss of cementation was frequently observed (FFs: 32%, CCs: 53.2%, CFs: 21.3%). After 15 years, more than 75% of patients had experienced at least one "loss of cementation" event. In this respect, zinc-oxide phosphate and glass-ionomer cements did not show any significant difference., Conclusion: The long-term successful outcome of the RP experience was not compromised, although numerous clinical visits were required for maintenance. The predominant maintenance procedure was the need for recementation of the inner copings.

Objective: This study aims at ranking various luting systems according to their susceptibility to adhering Streptococcus mutans and at evaluating the influence of incongruent mixing ratios on adhesion quantities., Material and Methods: Circular specimens measuring 8 mm in diameter were made of nine widely used dental cements -- three of them mixed in different ratios -- and then incubated with S. mutans. Adhering streptococci were quantified using a biofluorometric assay in combination with an automated plate reader for cell quantification. Surface roughness (R(a)) was determined by perthometer measurements., Results: Meron plus revealed the highest R(a) (0.90 microm) and glass the lowest R(a) (<0.01 microm). In regular cement mixtures, the highest mean fluorescence intensities indicated the presence of many viable bacteria [Meron Plus (35,533 relative fluorescence units (rfu)), Maxcem (13,374 rfu), and Panavia F 2.0 (11,701 rfu)]. Moderate fluorescence intensities were found in Harvard (4,171 rfu), Ketac cem (3,766 rfu), Durelon (3,276 rfu), Calibra (3,259), Rely X Unicem (4,358 rfu), and Bifix SE (3,102 rfu). A medium correlation between R(a) and S. mutans adhesion was found. Changes in regular cement proportions (powder/liquid and base/catalyst, respectively) had a significant influence on relative fluorescence intensities, which linearly increased with a higher proportion of liquid in Harvard and with a higher proportion of catalyst in Calibra and Maxcem., Conclusions: Various luting systems revealed considerable differences in their potential to adhere S. mutans. Variations from recommended cement proportions led to significant changes in the amount of adhering streptococci.

Purpose: To survey dentists in Germany regarding their preferred cementation regimen for fixed dental prostheses (FDPs) fabricated from various restorative materials. Materials and Methods: An online survey was developed for completion by dentists in Germany between 08/2019 and 02/2020. The questionnaire gathered information about the cementation regimen (conventional, including the acid-base cements zinc-oxide phosphate or any glass-ionomer cement; self-adhesive; adhesive; don't know) that the participant would preferably select for the insertion of single- or multi-unit FDPs fabricated from various restorative materials. Data were also collected on demographic and personal characteristics. Results: A total of 721 dentists completed the survey, and the data from 688 questionnaires were included in the analysis. Conventional cementation was the option of choice for restorations fabricated from alloy/porcelain-fused- to-metal among 91.0% of the participants and for restorations fabricated from polycrystalline ceramics among 42.9% of the participants. Adhesive cementation was preferred for restorations fabricated from feldspathic/leucite-reinforced glass ceramics (77.9%), lithium-disilicate glass ceramics (67.5%), zirconia-reinforced lithium-silicate glass ceramics (42.0%), and CAD/CAM resin composites (63.8%). Uncertainties regarding the appropriate cementation protocol for restorations fabricated from CAD/CAM resin composites were reported by 15% of the participants. More than 20% of the participants selected a technique that is less or not at all recommended for the cementation of restorations fabricated from zirconia-reinforced lithium-silicate glass ceramic and CAD/CAM resin composites. Conclusion: The results of the survey suggest that dentists in Germany select the cementation regime depending on the restorative material. Some of the participating dentists selected cementation regimens that are less or not at all recommended for restorations fabricated from zirconia-reinforced lithium-silicate glass ceramic and CAD/CAM resin composites, or were not sure about the appropriate cementation protocol. Purpose: The aim of this in vitro study was to investigate the surface properties and in vitro adhesion of Streptococcus mutans to dental self-etching two-step adhesives using an artificial mouth system. Materials and Methods: Carriers of a denture base resin supplemented with hydroxyapatite were manufactured, polished, and surface treated with various two-step self-etching dental adhesives (Clearfil Protect Bond, Silorane System Adhesive, Adper Scotchbond SE) according to the manufacturers' instructions. For each adhesive, 14 samples were inserted in an artificial mouth system and successively rinsed with mucin solutions (2 h) and Streptococcus mutans NCTC 10449 suspension (4 h). Surface free energy of the specimens was determined before and after mucin coating. The amount of adhered bacteria was quantified using a fluorescent dye (Resazurin/Alamar Blue) for viable cell quantification. Results: Before mucin coating, significant differences in surface free energies were found between the various adhesives, with total surface free energies ranging from 34.26 mJ/m-2 to 42.30 mJ/m-2. Mucin coating clearly levelled surface free energy differences. Significantly lower fluorescence intensities, indicating lower adhesion of Streptococcus mutans, were found for Silorane System Adhesive than for Clearfil Protect Bond and Adper Scotchbond SE, regardless of mucin coating. Discussion: The findings of this in vitro study indicate that the initial adhesion of Streptococcus mutans is lower to Silorane System Adhesive than to Clearfil Protect Bond or Adper Scotchbond SE. The aim of the study was to investigate the retention behaviour (pull-off force include adhesive remnant index = ARI) as well as translucency of various temporary luting cements and use microstructure elucidation methods to formulate explanatory approaches to their mode of action. The retention force of the temporary luting cements Provicol QM Plus (P+), Provicol QM Aesthetic (Pae), Bifix Temp (BiT), and as a reference a glass ionomer cement Meron (M) with a direct (Structur 3/S3) or an indirect (Structure CAD/SCAD) resin-based composite restauration was investigated after accelerated aging (thermocycling). Additional investigation of the physical properties was performed regarding to translucency and surface free energy. The microstructure was evaluated by X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry and micro X-ray computed tomography. All tested temporary luting cements showed different pull-off forces in the range between 3.0 and 16.8 N in combination with S3 or SCAD after thermocycling. Only BiT with S3 showed pull-off forces of 129.2 N and complete retention on the restoration (ARI = 0), which was significant (p <.001) to all other samples. High translucency (BiT > Pae > M > P+) was observed for materials with lower crystalline content and low residual mass (usally resulting from higher organic content). M showed the highest surface free energy with a predominantly polar fraction, while BiT had a predominantly dispersive fraction. The highest porosity was observed in the coronal region of the restoration. The results suggest that translucency of temporary luting cements can be increased with higher organic and lower cryristall content. All combinations of cements and temporary restorations (direct/indirect; with the exception of BiT/S3) showed pull-off forces below 17 N (equivalent to a weight force of ∼1.7 kg), which allows manual detachment of the restoration by the dentist. • Correlation between the organic/crystalline content and the translucency exists. • Luting composites cement and direct restauration showed higher pull-off forces. • The highest forces are not always achieved with glass ionomer cement. • Highest porosity in the cement gap was observed in the occlusal region. The mechanical properties of luting agents are determined by the mixing ratio of powder and liquid. The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the therapeutic range of zinc carboxylate cements by investigating the mechanical properties of such cements when formulated using erroneous powder/liquid ratios. Using the recommended powder/liquid ratio as a standard, four different mixing ratios (25% and 50% more or less powder) were used to prepare each carboxylate cement (Aqualox, Carboco, Durelon). A veneering composite (Sinfony) was used as control. Vickers hardness and three-body abrasion were evaluated. In each carboxylate cement, both a 25% and 50% increase in liquid content resulted in significantly lower Vickers hardness, whereas a higher powder content altered the saturation concentration but did not result in increased hardness; this effect was particularly obvious in Carboco. Durelon showed a linear relationship between wear and powder/liquid ratio, whereas Carboco and Aqualox displayed a more exponential increase in wear in mixings with an increased liquid content. The mechanical properties of carboxylate cements were altered in mixtures with an increased liquid content, but not in those with a high powder content. The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of X-rays used in micro X-ray computer tomography (µXCT) on the mechanical performance and microstructure of a variety of dental materials. Standardised bending beams (2 × 2 × 25 mm3) were forwarded to irradiation with an industrial tomograph. Using three-dimensional datasets, the porosity of the materials was quantified and flexural strength was investigated prior to and after irradiation. The thermal properties of irradiated and unirradiated materials were analysed and compared by means of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Single µXCT measurements led to a significant decrease in flexural strength of polycarbonate with acrylnitril-butadien-styrol (PC-ABS). No significant influence in flexural strength was identified for resin-based composites (RBCs), poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), and zinc phosphate cement (HAR) after a single irradiation by measurement. However, DSC results suggest that changes in the microstructure of PMMA are possible with increasing radiation doses (multiple measurements, longer measurements, higher output power from the X-ray tube). In summary, it must be assumed that X-ray radiation during µXCT measurement at high doses can lead to changes in the structure and properties of certain polymers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives This study investigated the influence of conventional cementation, self-adhesive cementation, and adhesive bonding on the in vitro performance, fracture resistance, and marginal adaptation of zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate (ZLS) crowns. Methods Human molar teeth ( n = 40) were prepared and full-contour crowns of a ZLS ceramic (Celtra Duo, DeguDent, G, n = 32) and a lithium disilicate ceramic (LDS; IPS e.max CAD, Ivoclar-Vivadent, FL, n = 8) were fabricated and glazed. Four groups of ZLS crowns were defined ( n = 8/group) and cemented with different glass-ionomer cements, resin, and resin-modified self-adhesive luting materials. The LDS crowns served as reference group with adhesive bonding. A combined thermal cycling and mechanical loading (TCML: 3000 × 5 °C/3000 × 55 °C; 1.2 × 10 6 cycles à 50 N) with human antagonists was performed in a chewing simulator. Fracture force of surviving crowns was determined. Marginal adaptation at the cement/tooth and cement/crown interface was investigated by scanning electron microscopy before and after TCML, and the share of perfect margins was determined. Data were statistically analyzed (one-way ANOVA; post hoc Bonferroni, α = 0.05). Results One crown of the adhesive group failed during TCML (879,000 cycles = 3.7 years). No statistically significant ( p = 0.078) differences in fracture resistance were found between different cementations, although highest data in tendency were found for adhesive bonding. Shares of perfect margins at the cement/tooth (93.8 ± 5.6–99.6 ± 0.8%) and cement/crown (84.7 ± 6.6–100.0 ± 0.0%) interfaces did not differ significantly ( p > 0.05) between the different cementation groups.
