Purpose: To provide an overview of the in-vitro bond strength of universal adhesives to zirconia and analyze whether these adhesives are a reliable alternative to conventional zirconia primers., Materials and Methods: A systematic search was conducted in PubMed/Medline, Scopus, and ISI Web of Science databases up to August 2021. Investigations published in English, assessing resin-mediated bond to zirconia using universal adhesives compared to phosphate/silane-based primer or phosphate-based primer were included. After study selection and data extraction, risk of bias analysis was performed. Statistical analyses were performed using RevMan 5.4, with a random effects model, at a significance level of 0.05., Results: In total, 23 studies were included for qualitative and quantitative analysis. Universal adhesives showed higher bond strengths than did phosphate-based primers (p < 0.00001) to aged zirconia without airborne alumina-particle abrasion. Similar results were observed when the zirconia surface was airborne-particle abraded at baseline and after dynamic aging (p < 0.0001). When universal adhesives and phosphate-silane based primers were compared, similar bond strengths (p ≥ 0.001) were observed after surface abrasion, regardless of storage condition., Conclusion: The results showed that universal adhesives generate higher bond strengths when compared to conventional zirconia primers.

Despite all the advances in adhesive dentistry, dental bonds are still fragile due to degradation events that start during application of adhesive agents and the inherent hydrolysis of resin-dentin bonds. Here, we combined two outstanding processing methods (electrospinning and cryomilling) to obtain bioactive (antimicrobial and anti-metalloproteinase) fiber-based fillers containing a potent matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) inhibitor (doxycycline, DOX). Poly(ε)caprolactone solutions containing different DOX amounts (0, 5, 25, and 50 wt%) were processed via electrospinning, resulting in non-toxic submicron fibers with antimicrobial activity against Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacillus. The fibers were embedded in a resin blend, light-cured, and cryomilled for the preparation of fiber-containing fillers, which were investigated with antibacterial and in situ gelatin zymography analyzes. The fillers containing 0, 25, and 50 wt% DOX-releasing fibers were added to aliquots of a two-step, etch-and-rinse dental adhesive system. Mechanical strength, hardness, degree of conversion (DC), water sorption and solubility, bond strength to dentin, and nanoleakage analyses were performed to characterize the physico-mechanical, biological, and bonding properties of the modified adhesives. Statistical analyses (ANOVA; Kruskal-Wallis) were used when appropriate to analyze the data (α = 0.05). DOX-releasing fibers were successfully obtained, showing proper morphological architecture, cytocompatibility, drug release ability, slow degradation profile, and antibacterial activity. Reduced metalloproteinases (MMP-2 and MMP-9) activity was observed only for the DOX-containing fillers, which have also demonstrated antibacterial properties against tested bacteria. Adhesive resins modified with DOX-containing fillers demonstrated greater DC and similar mechanical properties as compared to the fiber-free adhesive (unfilled control). Concerning bonding performance to dentin, the experimental adhesives showed similar immediate bond strengths to the control. After 12 months of water storage, the fiber-modified adhesives (except the group consisting of 50 wt% DOX-loaded fillers) demonstrated stable bonds to dentin. Nanoleakage was similar among all groups investigated. DOX-releasing fibers showed promising application in developing novel dentin adhesives with potential therapeutic properties and MMP inhibition ability; antibacterial activity against relevant oral pathogens, without jeopardizing the physico-mechanical characteristics; and bonding performance of the adhesive.

This study evaluated the effect of different adhesive protocols on the shear bond strength (SBS) of bulk-fill resin composite repaired with bulk-fill or conventional composite. Cylindrical bulk-fill resin composite specimens were prepared and allocated into groups according to the bonding strategy: no treatment, Silane+Scotch Bond Multipurpose (S+SBMP), Tetric N Bond Universal, and Single Bond Universal. Following bonding strategy, bulk-fill or conventional composite buildups were performed. After 24 h of storage in distilled water at 37°C, shear force was applied to the interface using a universal testing machine. The data were analyzed by two-way ANOVA and Tukey test (α=0.05). SBS was influenced by the bonding strategy and the composite used (p<0.001). Irrespective of the composite used, the group S+SBMP yielded the highest SBS values (p<0.001). Repair bond strength of bulk-fill composites can be improved by using a silane coupling agent followed by a hydrophobic resin.

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of different photoinitiator systems on the cell viability and physico-chemical properties of an experimental adhesive resin of a two-step self-etch adhesive system., Methods: Eight photoinitiators and coinitiators were evaluated, camphorquinone (CQ); ethyl-dimethylamino benzoate (EDAB); diphenyliodonium hexafluorophosphate (DPIHFP); 1,3-benzodioxole (BDO); piperonyl alcohol (AP); 1,3-diethyl-2-thiobarbituric acid (TBA); bisphenyl phosphinic oxide (BAPO); and diphenyl phosphinic oxide (TPO). Seven experimental adhesive resins (Bis-GMA:TEGDMA - 1:1 by wt%) were formulated by varying the initiation systems: R CQ+EDAB (control), R CQ+EDAB+DPHFP , R CQ+BDO , R CQ+AP , R CQ+TBA , R BAPO and R TPO . The cell viability of the different photoinitiators in their isolated form and after being incorporated into the adhesive resins was evaluated using the MTT assay. The degree of conversion within the hybrid layer (DC in situ) was evaluated by micro-Raman spectroscopy; the polymerization kinetics, by FTIR spectroscopy. The water sorption (Wsp) and solubility (Wsl) were calculated by using percentage of gain and loss of mass. Data were analyzed using One-way ANOVA and Kruskal-Wallis tests (α=0.05)., Results: When evaluated in their isolated form, the DPIHFP was considered cytotoxic in all concentrations evaluated. When incorporated into and adhesive resin, R CQ+TBA presented higher cell viability values than control and the highest values of DC in situ (p<0.05). Additionally, the use of CQ+TBA showed a higher cell viability when compared with the conventional CQ+EDAB system., Significance: The pair CQ+TBA could be potentially useful in the development of materials with improved biocompatibility., (Copyright © 2019 The Academy of Dental Materials. Objectives: This study describes the synthesis of piperonyl methacrylate (PipM) and evaluates its effect when used as coinitiator in the photoinitiated radical polymerization of experimental adhesive resins., Methods: PipM was synthetized through an esterification reaction and characterized by FTIR and 1 H NMR spectroscopy. Adhesive resins containing camphorquinone as photoinitiator and PipM or ethyl-4-dimethyl amine benzoate (EDAB) as coinitiators were formulated. Scotchbond Multipurpose (SBMP) adhesive was used as commercial reference. All materials were analyzed for polymerization kinetics, flexural strength, elastic modulus, water sorption/solubility, shear bond strength to bovine enamel and dentin, characterization of hybrid layer by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), microbiological direct contact test, and cytotoxicity., Results: The adhesive with PipM presented higher degree of conversion and lower sorption/solubility when compared with other groups. Shear bond strength to enamel and dentin were similar for PipM and EDAB materials. The percentage of cellular viability was close to 100% and similar in the experimental groups and the commercial reference., Conclusions: PipM presented similar or superior performance to the tertiary amine used as control, representing a potential alternative coinitiator for photopolymerizable dental materials., Clinical Significance: PipM could be potentially useful in the formulations of adhesive systems with enhanced chemical properties, which could mean improvement in the longevity of composite resin restorations., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Ltd. Objectives: Resin adhesives (RA) have been applied between resin composite (RC) increments, but there is no consensus on the impact of this technique on the properties of the final restoration. This study evaluated the effect of the presence of RA between RC layers on physical properties, translucency and long-term color stability of the restorative material., Methods: Scotchbond™ Multi-Purpose (bond, 3M ESPE) and Adper™ Single Bond 2 (3M ESPE) were used as RA, and Filtek™ Z350 (3M ESPE) as RC. Specimens containing RA were prepared by applying 3 layers of the adhesive between 4 increments of RC; adhesive-free specimens were also used (control). Tests of water sorption and solubility, mechanical performance (microtensile cohesive strength, flexural strength, and flexural modulus, after immediate and long-term water storage), and translucency and color stability (after immediate and 1, 7, 90, and 180 days of water or wine storage) were performed. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images were also taken from the fractured specimens (flexural strength test). Data were analyzed using ANOVA and Tukey test (p<0.05)., Results: Scotchbond (SBMP) showed lower water sorption and solubility than the control (p<0.001), and an overall similar (p≥0.198, immediate tests) or higher (p≤0.019, long-term tests) mechanical performance. SBMP exhibited a rougher cross-sectional surface compared to the other groups. Translucency remained unaltered after 180 days of storage (p≥0.313), except for single bond that had increased translucency with wine storage (p<0.045). After 180 days, all groups changed color (p≤0.002), although more intensively when immersed in wine., Significance: The presence of RA within RC increments increased the physical stability of the material, being this effect more evident by using the hydrophobic unfilled adhesive resin (SBMP). Objectives: This study systematically review the literature to assess the effectiveness of antibacterial monomers incorporated into dental adhesive systems against major oral bacteria; as well as the research advances and the future prospects of this technology., Methods: The following seven databases were screened: MedLine (PubMed), Lilacs, Ibecs, Web of Science, Scopus, Scielo, and The Cochrane Library. Furthermore, the online system Questel Orbit (Paris, France) was accessed to obtain patent data. The inclusion criteria were articles and patents that investigated the antimicrobial activity of antibacterial monomers in dental adhesive systems. Only documents written in English, Spanish or Portuguese were included., Results: After screening, 33 studies and eight patents fulfilled all the criteria and were included. Antibacterial agents, such as QA, MDPB, DMAHM and DMADDM were found in patents, which claimed their incorporation into adhesive compositions, dental cements, composite resins. MDPB was the only antimicrobial monomer incorporated into a commercially available adhesive system, Clearfil Protect Bond™ (Kuraray Co. Ltd., Japan). All studies reported the inclusion of antimicrobial monomers in adhesive systems to be an effective dental treatment strategy., Significance: There are potential areas to be explored with antibacterial monomers for dentistry, and their use could have important implications for future more conservative dental treatments. Objectives: The aim of this study was to synthesize an alternative acidic monomer (polypropylene glycol phosphate methacrylate--Poly-P) to constitute experimental two-step self-etch adhesive systems and also to evaluate its influence on the pH and microshear bond strength (μSBS) to enamel., Methods: Primers containing Poly-P (10, 15, 30 or 50wt.%), HEMA, ethanol, and water were prepared and allocated in subgroups according to a buffered or non-buffered pH. One experimental control and one commercial (Clearfill™ SE Bond) references were used. μSBS protocol was performed at human enamel, followed by mechanical testing. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was performed after each primer application. Data was analysed by one-way Kruskal-Wallis and Student-Newman-Keuls tests (p<0.05) and by linear regression predictive models., Results: As greater the Poly-P content, the lower the primer's pH. Buffered groups showed lower μSBS values than non-buffered groups. Groups with Poly-P content equal or higher than 30wt.% showed similar μSBS results when compared to the controls. SEM images demonstrated that primers with high Poly-P content etched enamel with prisms exposure., Conclusions: The pH of the primer was directly influenced by the concentration of acidic monomer, which directly affected the adhesion to enamel. Both the acidity and the type of acid-functional monomer present in the adhesive influenced the bond strength results., Clinical Significance: Poly-P synthesis was easy and effective, and considering the good bond strength results obtained, this acid-functional monomer may be potentially used in the formulation of self-etch dental adhesive systems., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier Ltd. This study evaluates the effect of zinc methacrylate (ZM) on the degree of conversion (DC), cytotoxicity and antimicrobial activity (AA) of an experimental resin. Tetraethyleneglycol dimethacrylate was used as the experimental resin and it was photo activated using camphoroquinone and ethyl 4-dimethylamine benzoate. Additionally, 1.0, 2.5, 5.0, 10, 20 and 30 wt% of ZM was added to the various experimental resins. The DC was accessed by Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy. For cytotoxicity, immortalized mouse fibroblasts were exposed to the experimental resin extracts. An MTT assay was used to access the cytotoxicity. The AA against Streptococcus mutans UA159 was accessed by the agar diffusion method. An improvement in the DC in all concentrations of ZM was observed. The greater the amount of ZM on the experimental resin, the less the cytotoxicity was provoked. Three ZM concentrations showed AA that exhibited various inhibition growth zones with 10, 20 (10 mm) and 30 wt% (15 mm).

Objectives: The present study evaluated comparatively the surface roughness of four orthodontic band cements after storage in various solutions., Material and Methods: Eight standardized cylinders were made from 4 materials: zinc phosphate cement (ZP), compomer (C), resin-modified glass ionomer cement (RMGIC) and resin cement (RC). Specimens were stored for 24 h in deionized water and immersed in saline (pH 7.0) or 0.1 M lactic acid solution (pH 4.0) for 15 days. Surface roughness readings were taken with a profilometer (Surfcorder SE1200) before and after the storage period. Data were analyzed by two-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (comparison among cements and storage solutions) or paired t-test (comparison before and after the storage period) at 5% significance level., Results: The values for average surface roughness were statistically different (p<0.001) among cements at both baseline and after storage. The roughness values of cements in a decreasing order were ZP>RMGIC>C>R (p<0.001). After 15 days, immersion in lactic acid solution resulted in the highest surface roughness for all cements (p<0.05), except for the RC group (p>0.05). Compared to the current threshold (0.2 µm) related to biofilm accumulation, both RC and C remained below the threshold, even after acidic challenge by immersion in lactic acid solution., Conclusions: Storage time and immersion in lactic acid solution increased the surface roughness of the majority of the tested cements. RC presented the smoothest surface and it was not influenced by storage conditions.

This study investigated the impact of immediate and delayed light activation on self-polymerization of a model dual-cured luting agent. The material presented the following components: base paste - 2,2-bis[4-(2-hydroxy-3-methacryloxyprop-1-oxy)phenyl]propane/triethylene glycol dimethacrylate (TEGDMA), camphorquinone, dimethyl-p-toluidine, butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), glass fillers; catalyst paste - bisphenol-A ethoxylated dimethacrylate/TEGDMA, benzoyl peroxide, BHT, fillers. The pastes were mixed and seven polymerization scenarios tested: immediate light activation using low (5Jcm(-2)) or high (20Jcm(-2)) energy dose; delayed light activation (after 2min - short delay) using low or high dose; delayed light activation (after 10min - long delay) using low or high dose; and self-polymerization only. The degree of conversion (DC) and rate of polymerization (R(p)) were evaluated for 30min by real-time infrared spectroscopy. The lowest DC was detected for the self-polymerized and immediate-low dose groups, whereas the immediate-high dose and short delay-high dose groups showed the highest values. For the self-polymerized and immediate-high dose samples, R(p)(max) was detected after approximately 7s, whereas this took approximately 14s for the immediate-low dose group. R(p)(max) for the immediate-high dose group was higher than for the self-polymerized sample, which in turn was higher than for the immediate-low dose group. R(p)(max) for the short delay groups was higher than for the long delay groups. In conclusion, the extent of self-polymerization was influenced by the light dose reaching the material, which was dependent on high radiant exposure for optimal polymerization and the moment at which the light was applied; the short delay increased the DC for lower doses, while also generally decreasing the R(p) for all scenarios.

This study evaluated the effect of different concentrations of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) on the inhibition of matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) in vitro. Mouse gingival explants were cultured overnight in Dulbecco's modified Eagle's minimal essential medium, following which the expression of secreted enzymes was analyzed by gelatin zymography and the effects of different amounts of HEMA on enzyme activity were investigated. The gelatinolytic proteinases present in the conditioned media were characterized as being matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) by means of specific chemical inhibition. The MMPs present in the conditioned media were identified, using immunoprecipitation, as MMP-2. Three major bands were detected in the zymographic assays and were characterized, according to their respective molecular weights, into the following forms of MMP-2: zymogene (72 kDa), intermediate (66 kDa), and active (62 kDa). All forms of MMP-2 were inhibited by HEMA in a dose-dependent manner, implying that MMP-2 may be inhibited by HEMA in vivo.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the solubility and the fluoride release of different materials used for orthodontic band cementation in different solutions and at different times., Materials and Methods: Three materials were selected: Ultra Band-Lok (UBL); RelyX (RLX) and Ketac-Cem (KTC). Sixteen standard samples from each material were prepared, according to the manufacturers' instructions. The samples were stored in two different solutions (n = 8): 0.9% saline solution (pH 7.0) and 0.1 mol/l lactic acid (pH 4.0). The storage solutions were changed after 24 h and after 7, 15 and 30 days. The fluoride release was determined with an ion-specific electrode (Analion). For the solubility evaluation, the formula Wsl = (m1-m2)/V was used to determine the loss of mass. Data were submitted for statistical analysis using the non-parametric Kruskal-Wallis test., Results: With respect to the solubility, immersion in lactic acid increased the solubility when compared with saline solution (P < 0.01). In both the solutions, there were differences among materials (P < 0.01) with the following rankings: UBL < RLX < KTC for lactic acid and UBL < RLX < KTC for saline solution. The ranking of fluoride release was UBL < KTC < RLX. In the two tested solutions, RLX exhibited the highest fluoride release (P < 0.01), whereas KTC showed more fluoride release than that of UBL (P < 0.05). Fluoride release decreased over time and the storage solution influenced the fluoride-releasing capacity of some materials., Conclusions: It was found that fluoride release was influenced by storage solution, materials and immersion time. Materials and storage solution were the significant factors for solubility.

This study verified the relationship between the volume and microleakage of conventional and bonded amalgam restorations. Also, the microleakage influence of intermediate materials, substrates and the direction of sectioning was investigated. Fifty-six bovine incisors were selected. Standard Class V cavities were prepared in buccal and lingual surfaces. For each tooth, two cavity sizes were prepared, corresponding to two cavity volumes: one larger (A) and the other smaller (B). The cervical wall was located in cementum/dentin and the incisal wall in enamel. The teeth were distributed in four groups (n=28) according to the intermediate material employed (glass-ionomer cement, resin cement, adhesive system and copal varnish-control). The materials were applied following manufacturers' directions. After restoration, the teeth were submitted to thermal cycling. They were then immersed in a dye solution and sectioned in two directions inciso-cervical (IC) and mesio-distal (MD) sections to evaluate the microleakage. Data were subjected to non-parametric statistical analysis (Wilcoxon's paired test and Kruskal-Wallis test). No significant difference was found between the two cavity sizes. Leakage in enamel was statistically lower than in the cementum/dentin interface (p < 0.05). In some situations, glass-ionomer or resin cement lined amalgam restorations presented less dye leakage than copal varnish lined restorations (p < 0.05). No significant difference was observed in microleakage between IC or MD sectioning. Within the limitations of this study, it was concluded that cavity size and direction of section were not significant factors for microleakage, while substrate and intermediate materials had a significant effect on the sealing ability in amalgam restorations.

Purpose: To investigate the influence of different water concentrations in the solvents of self-etching primers on microtensile bond strength (μTBS) of an experimental adhesive system. Materials and Methods: Five experimental self-etching primers with 0, 5, 10, 20 and 40 (wt%) water as solvent were formulated. An experimental adhesive resin (AD-50) was also synthesized to create one experimental self-etching adhesive system. Clearfil SE Bond (CSEB) was used as the commercial reference. Sixty bovine incisors were randomly separated into 6 groups. Buccal enamel was removed to expose the superficial coronal dentin; this surface was polished wet to create a standardized smear layer. After rinsing, water was removed, leaving the surface visibly dried. The dentin surfaces were etched with primer and air dried, adhesive resin was applied and photoactivated, then the composite resin restoration was placed. After storage for 24 h, the specimens were sectioned with a cooled diamond saw at low speed. Microtensile bond strength was measured and data were analyzed with one-way ANOVA/Tukey's test (α = 0.05). Results: ANOVA showed that primer composition was a significant factor for bond strength. There was no significant difference in bond strengths between the primers with a water concentration of 40% (53.9 ± 12.7 MPa), 20% (51.1 ± 11.5 MPa, and 10% (47.5 ± 11.4 MPa), and CSEB (50.7 ± 9.8 MPa). The groups with 5% (38.6 ± 12.9 MPa) and 0% (31.5 ± 7.5 MPa) water presented similar bond strengths amongst themselves but were statistically significantly lower than that of the other groups. Conclusion: The water concentration in the primer solvent exercises a significant influence on the bond strength of this experimental self-etching adhesive system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction. Mineral Trioxide Aggregate (MTA) is a tricalcium-based silicate, dicalcium silicate matrix. Despite its good biologic properties, some clinicians still claim to have difficulties in handling MTA after its preparation due to its sandy consistency. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the physicochemical properties and cytotoxicity of MTA Repair HP (Angelus, Londrina, PR, Brazil) compared with MTA Angelus (Angelus, Londrina, PR, Brazil). Materials and Method. The properties assessed were particle size, setting time, flow, film thickness, radiopacity, water solubility, compressive strength, and cytotoxicity. Statistical analysis was performed considering p < 0.05 as statistically significant. Results. For radiopacity, water absorption and solubility MTA Repair HP were statistically similar to MTA Angelus. The MTA Angelus had statistically different film thickness values, higher than MTA Repair HP (p < 0.05). Besides, MTA Angelus showed a lower and statistically different compressive strength after 28 days than MTA Repair HP (p<0.05). Additionally, MTA Repair HP set more slowly (p < 0.05). Relative to cell viability, MTA Repair HP was statistically similar to MTA Angelus after 24 and 48 h in cell viability. Conclusions. The MTA Repair HP presented similar cell viability, lower film thickness, higher flow, setting time, and compressive strength values after 28 days than MTA Angelus. This study evaluated the three-year lifespan of the bond to dentin of experimental self-etch adhesives containing benzodioxole derivatives - 1,3-benzodioxole (BDO) and piperonyl alcohol (PA) - as co-initiator alternative to amines. Adhesive resins were formulated using Bis-GMA, TEGDMA, HEMA, camphorquinone and different co-initiators: BDO, PA or ethyl 4-dimethylamino benzoate (EDAB - amine). An experimental selfetch primer was used to complete the two-step, self-etch adhesive system. Clearfil SE Bond (CSE) was used as commercial reference. Bond strength to human dentin was assessed by microtensile bond strength (µTBS) test, and failure mode was classified. Morphology of the dentin bonding interface was assessed via scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Irrespective of the dental adhesives evaluated, µTBS was higher after 24 hours compared with that after 1.5 and 3 years (p = 0.001). However, adhesives with BDO and PA as co-initiators showed significantly higher bond strength than the bonding resin with EDAB (p = 0.002), independent of the time evaluated. The commercial adhesive CSE showed similar bond strength compared with the other groups (p = 0.05). Mixed failures were mainly observed after 24 hours, while adhesive failures were more frequently observed after 1.5 and 3 years. No notable differences in homogeneity and continuity along the bonded interfaces were detected among the materials in the SEM analysis. In conclusion, benzodioxole derivatives are feasible alternative coinitiators to tertiary amine in camphorquinone-based self-etching dental adhesive formulations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We evaluated the effect of activation mode (immediate or delayed light activation vs. no light activation) on diametral tensile strength (DTS), elastic modulus, ultimate tensile strength (UTS), and degree of conversion (DC) in dual-cured resin cements. Three resin cements were evaluated: Enforce, RelyX ARC, and Panavia F. The mixed cements were inserted into circular molds for the DTS test and into dumbbell-shaped molds for the UTS test. Inside the molds, the cements were light-activated either imme-diately or after 5 min (delayed light activation). If no light activation was performed, the materials were protected from light exposure (control). The DTS and UTS tests were performed until fracture. The elastic modulus was calculated using data from the DTS test, and DC was evaluated 24 h after manipulation using near-infrared spectroscopy. Data for each variable were individually analyzed by two-way ANOVA and the post-hoc Tukey test (a = 0.05). Regarding DTS, activation mode influenced only Panavia F specimens, which had the lowest DTS values in the absence of light activation. Activation mode did not influence the elastic modulus or UTS of any resin cement evaluated. Immediate light activation yielded higher DC values as compared with the absence of light activation. This study investigates the in-depth polymerization of dual-cured resin cement (Enforce; Dentsply, shades A2, B1, and opaque). Cylindrical specimens are obtained by photo-activation through ceramic. Control samples are light-cured without using ceramic. Samples are tested after 15 min or 24 h. Knoop hardness readings are made at 100, 300, 500, and 700 µm depth. Hardness is generally dependent on the mode of activation and post-cure time. Shades A2 and B1 show higher hardness values than opaque resin. Hardness at 100 µm is higher than at 700 µm. This study investigated the relationship between the irradiance transmitted through ceramic and the bond strength of a resin cement to dentin. After application of an adhesive system, elastomer molds with cylindrical orifices (1.2 mm in diameter) were placed onto bovine dentin surfaces and filled with a photoactivated luting agent (Enforce; Dentsply Caulk). Light‐activation was performed through a 0.6‐mm‐thick ceramic disc using different intensities: 250, 400, 550, 700, or 850 mW/cm2. Control specimens were irradiated without ceramic (1050 mW/cm2). The radiant exposure was kept at 30 J/cm2. Light spectral distribution was analyzed with a spectrometer. Microshear test was conducted and modes of failure were classified under SEM. Bond strength data were analyzed with ANOVA and Student–Newman–Keuls' test (α ≤ 0.05), and failure scores with the Kruskal–Wallis test (α ≤ 0.05). A linear regression model assessed the relationship between irradiance and bond strength. Groups light‐cured at 250 and 400 mW/cm2 presented lower bond strengths than groups activated at 850 and 1050 mW/cm2. The linear regression showed that a decrease in light irradiance predicts a decrease in bond strength (r2 = 0.955; p = 0.004). A predominance of mixed failures was observed. No significant alteration in the spectral wavelengths was observed. Despite the constant energy dose, the bond strength was dependent upon the irradiance level. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This study evaluated the performance of different bonding tests on the bond strength of three adhesive systems to dentin. Forty-eight bovine incisors were used in the study, which were allocated in two groups according to the bond strength test performed: microtensile (µTBS) or microshear (µSBS). Also, each group was divided in three subgroups according to the adhesive system applied: Single Bond (SB), Prime & Bond (PB) and XP Bond (XPB) (n=8). The teeth were prepared according to each bond strength test protocol, and then the specimens were tested in an universal testing machine (EMIC). The data were submitted to two-way ANOVA (bond strength test and adhesive system type factors) and Tukey's post hoc test (α=0.05). The µTBS results were higher for all the adhesives when compared to the µSBS ones. Within the µTBS results, SB showed higher bond strength than PB and XPB, which showed similar adhesive performance among each other; within the µSBS results, all the adhesives presented similar bond strength values to dentin. The µTBS test detected differences between the adhesive systems evaluated; in contrast, the µSBS test was less discriminating in evaluating the adhesive performance of the materials tested. Objective: To evaluate the influence of Bis-EMA 30 on the resin-to-dentin microtensile bond strength (microTBS) and structural reliability of the experimental three-step etch-and-rinse adhesive systems.Methods: Five experimental primers containing different dimethacrylate monomer concentrations (0, 10, 20, 40, 60 wt% of the Bis-EMA 30, P0.P60) added to acid monomer and solvents (ethanol/water), and a resin bond (Bis-GMA/TEGDMA, 50/50 wt%) were formulated. The adhesive system Scotchbond MultiPurpose (SBMP, 3M ESPE) was tested as commercial reference. Sixty bovine incisors were randomly separated into six groups, and their superficial coronal dentin was exposed. After acid etching and rinsing, the excess water was removed from the surface with absorbent paper. Each experimental primer was actively applied (30 s), followed by a mild air stream (10 s). The experimental adhesive resin was applied and light activated for 20 s. Resin composite restorations were incrementally built up. The restored teeth were stored in distilled water at 37 degrees C for 24 h, and then sectioned to obtain sticks with a cross-sectional area of approximately 0.5 mm(2), after which 24 specimens per group were subjected to the microTBS test. Data (MPa) were analyzed by One-way ANOVA, Tukey test (alpha=0.05) and Weibull analysis.Results: The P40 group showed microTBS means similar to those of the control (SBMP), whereas both had statistically higher values when compared with the other groups (p<0.001). Moreover, P40 showed higher structural reliability, represented by the high Weibull modulus and characteristic strength values. The lowest microTBS was observed in the P0, P10 and P20 groups, which also had low structural reliability.Significance: Bis-EMA 30 is a promising monomer to be considered as a substitute for HEMA in adhesive system compositions.
