The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effect of irradiance and radiant exposure on the chemical-mechanical properties of a resin composite. A micro-hybrid resin composite (Clearfil AP-X, Kuraray) was investigated under two different irradiances: low (300 mW/cm2) and high (800 mW/cm2) and radiant exposures: 8 and 16 J/cm2. Four groups, named Low 8 J/cm2, High 8 J/cm2, Low 16 J/cm2, and High 16 J/cm2 were tested, and their flexural strengths, elastic moduli, depths of cure, and degrees of conversion were evaluated. Data were analyzed using two-way ANOVA and Tukey's test. A multiple linear regression model was used to correlate the irradiance and radiant exposure with dependent variables (α = 0.05). Irradiance and radiant exposure were found statistically significant for all dependent variables. The interaction between the factors was statistically significant only for the degree of conversion and elastic modulus. Group Low 16 J/cm2 exhibited a significantly superior performance in all the evaluated properties. Barring the degree of conversion, no significant differences were observed among the properties evaluated between the Low 8 J/cm2 and High 8 J/cm2 groups. The adjusted R2 values were high for the depth of cure and degree of conversion (0.58 and 0.96, respectively). Both irradiance and radiant exposure parameters play an important role in establishing the final properties of a micro-hybrid resin composite. Irradiance has a greater influence under higher radiant exposures.

To systematically review the literature to analyze the current trends and future perspectives of dental pulp capping materials through an analysis of scientific and technological data. This study is reported in accordance with the PRISMA Statement. Nine databases were screened: PubMed (MedLine), Lilacs, IBECS, BBO, Web of Science, Scopus, SciELO, Google Scholar, and The Cochrane Library. Additionally, the following patent applications were searched online in Questel Orbit (Paris, France), USPTO, EPO, JPO, INPI, and Patentscope databases. A total of 716 papers and 83 patents were included. Calcium hydroxide was the main type of material studied, especially for direct pulp capping, followed by MTA. Patents related to adhesives or resins increased from 1998 e 2008, while in the last years, a major increase was observed in bioactive materials (containing bioactive proteins), materials derived from MTA (calcium silicate, calcium phosphate and calcium aluminate-based cements) and MTA. It was possible to obtain a scientific and technological overview of pulp capping materials. MTA has shown favorable results in vital pulp therapy that seem to surpass the disadvantages of calcium hydroxide. Recent advances in bioactive materials and those derived from MTA have shown promising results that could improve biomaterials used in vital pulp treatments. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Objective: A systematic review was conducted to analyze Brazilian scientific and technological production related to the dental materials field over the past 50 years., Material and Methods: This study followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (Prisma) statement. Searches were performed until December 2014 in six databases: MedLine (PubMed), Scopus, LILACS, IBECS, BBO, and the Cochrane Library. Additionally, the Brazilian patent database (INPI - Instituto Nacional de Propriedade Industrial) was screened in order to get an overview of Brazilian technological development in the dental materials field. Two reviewers independently analyzed the documents. Only studies and patents related to dental materials were included in this review. Data regarding the material category, dental specialty, number of documents and patents, filiation countries, and the number of citations were tabulated and analyzed in Microsoft Office Excel (Microsoft Corporation, Redmond, Washington, United States)., Results: A total of 115,806 studies and 53 patents were related to dental materials and were included in this review. Brazil had 8% affiliation in studies related to dental materials, and the majority of the papers published were related to dental implants (1,137 papers), synthetic resins (681 papers), dental cements (440 papers), dental alloys (392 papers) and dental adhesives (361 papers). The Brazilian technological development with patented dental materials was smaller than the scientific production. The most patented type of material was dental alloys (11 patents), followed by dental implants (8 patents) and composite resins (7 patents)., Conclusions: Dental materials science has had a substantial number of records, demonstrating an important presence in scientific and technological development of dentistry. In addition, it is important to approximate the relationship between academia and industry to expand the technological development in countries such as Brazil.

Purpose: To evaluate the mechanical and physical properties of experimental HEMA-containing and HEMA-free resin adhesives., Materials and Methods: Experimental HEMA-free adhesives containing alternative dimethacrylates (bis-EMA 10 [B10], bis-EMA 30 [B30], PEG 400 [P400], PEG 1000 [P1000], PEG 400 UDMA [UP400]) were formulated and compared with a HEMA-containing adhesive (control). The adhesives were characterized by rheological analysis, polymerization kinetics (PK), water sorption (WS), and solubility (SL) tests. Flexural strength (FS) and flexural modulus (E) tests were performed under dry or wet conditions (distilled water or 70% ethanol solution). One-way and two-way ANOVA as well as Tukey's test were used to evaluate differences between groups (p < 0.05)., Results: The control group showed the lowest viscosity and was the only one with a degree of conversion lower than 50%. The control and the P1000 adhesive showed the statistically significantly highest WS (p < 0.05). The control and the UP400 adhesive showed the highest FS and E, and the dry-stored specimens showed more improved mechanical strength than did the wet-stored specimens (p < 0.05)., Conclusion: The physicomechanical properties of some of the HEMA-free adhesives were substantially improved when compared with those of the control, indicating that they could be potential monomers for the development of HEMA-free adhesive systems.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the reactivity and polymerization kinetics behavior of a model dental adhesive resin with water-soluble initiator systems., Methods: A monomer blend based on Bis-GMA, TEGDMA and HEMA was used as a model dental adhesive resin, which was polymerized using a thioxanthone type (QTX) as a photoinitiator. Binary and ternary photoinitiator systems were formulated using 1mol% of each initiator. The co-initiators used in this study were ethyl 4-dimethylaminobenzoate (EDAB), diphenyliodonium hexafluorophosphate (DPIHFP), 1,3-diethyl-2-thiobarbituric acid (BARB), p-toluenesulfinic acid and sodium salt hydrate (SULF). Absorption spectra of the initiators were measured using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer, and the photon absorption energy (PAE) was calculated. The binary system camphorquinone (CQ)/amine was used as a reference group (control). Twelve groups were tested in triplicate. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) was used to investigate the polymerization reaction during the photoactivation period to obtain the degree of conversion (DC) and maximum polymerization rate (R(p)(max)) profile of the model resin., Results: In the analyzed absorption profiles, the absorption spectrum of QTX is almost entirely localized in the UV region, whereas that of CQ is in the visible range. With respect to binary systems, CQ+EDAB exhibited higher DC and R(p)(max) values. In formulations that contained ternary initiator systems, the group CQ+QTX+EDAB was the only one of the investigated experimental groups that exhibited an R(p)(max) value greater than that of CQ+EDAB. The groups QTX+EDAB+DPIHFP and QTX+DPIHFP+SULF exhibited values similar to those of CQ+EDAB with respect to the final DC; however, they also exhibited lower reactivity., Significance: Water-soluble initiator systems should be considered as alternatives to the widely used CQ/amine system in dentin adhesive formulations., (Copyright © 2012 Academy of Dental Materials. This study evaluated the effect of zinc methacrylate (ZM) on the inhibition of matrix metalloproteinase 2 (MMP-2) and the ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of an experimental polymer. Enzymes secreted from mouse gingival tissues were analyzed by gelatin zymography in buffers containing 5 mM CaCl(2) (Tris-CaCl(2)) in 50 mM Tris-HCl buffer with various concentrations of ZM (0.5, 1, 2, 4, 8, and 16 mM). The matrix metalloproteinases present in the conditioned media were characterized by immunoprecipitation. The polymer UTS evaluation was performed in eight groups with various concentrations of ZM (0, 0.5, 1, 2.5, 5, 10, 20, and 30 wt.%), in a mechanical testing machine. MMP-2 (62 kDa) was detected in the zymographic assays and inhibited by ZM in all tested concentrations. UTS data were submitted to one-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (α = 0.05), and no significant differences were observed among groups, except in the polymer containing 30% ZM, presenting a significantly lower value when compared with the control group (p < 0.05). The results suggest that ZM inhibits MMP-2 expression in all concentrations tested, while small concentrations did not affect the ultimate tensile strength of the polymer. Zinc methacrylate is a metalloproteinase inhibitor that can be copolymerized with other methacrylate monomers. Yet, the addition of ZM did not affect the resin bond strength. Thus, in vivo tests should be performed to evaluate the performance of this material.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of different concentrations of triethylene glycol dimethacrylate (TEGDMA) on the inhibition of matrix metalloproteinase 2 (MMP-2). Mouse gingival explants were cultured overnight in DMEM and the expression of secreted enzymes was analyzed by gelatin zymography in buffers containing 5 mM CaCl(2) (Tris-CaCl(2)) in 50 mM Tris-HCl buffer with the addition of TEGDMA at different concentrations (0.62%, 1.25%, 2.5%, or 5.0% (v/v)). The gelatinolytic proteinase present in the conditioned media was characterized as matrix metalloproteinase by means of specific chemical inhibition. The matrix metalloproteinases present in the conditioned media were characterized as MMP-2 by immunoprecipitation. The eletrophoretic bands were scanned and the transmittance values were analyzed. Data was plotted and submitted to linear regression to investigate MMP-2 inhibition as a function of TEGDMA concentration. Three major bands were detected in the zymographic assays. These bands were characterized as MMP-2. Zymogene (72 kDa), intermediate (66 kDa) and active forms of MMP-2 (62 kDa) were inhibited by TEGDMA in a dose-dependent way. These findings suggest that TEGDMA could inhibit MMP-2 expression even at small concentrations.

To compare the resin-dentin bond degradation of 10 contemporary etch-and-rinse adhesive systems after one year of water storage, 100 bovine incisors were randomly separated into 10 groups and their superficial coronal dentin was exposed. According to manufacturers' instructions, dentin surfaces were bonded with one of seven two-step etch-and-rinse adhesives or one of three three-step etch-and-rinse adhesives. Composite buildups were constructed incrementally. Restored teeth were sectioned to obtain sticks (0.5 mm²). The specimens were subjected to a microtensile bond strength test after storage in distilled water (at 37°C) for one year. Data (MPa) were analyzed using Kruskal-Wallis and Tukey's tests at α = 0.05. Of the adhesives tested, One Step, All Bond 2, and Optibond FL attained the highest bond strength to dentin after one year in water storage, while Magic Bond DE and Master Bond presented a high number of premature debonded flaws.

Objective: To evaluate the influence of Bis-EMA 30 on the resin-to-dentin microtensile bond strength (microTBS) and structural reliability of the experimental three-step etch-and-rinse adhesive systems., Methods: Five experimental primers containing different dimethacrylate monomer concentrations (0, 10, 20, 40, 60 wt% of the Bis-EMA 30, P0.P60) added to acid monomer and solvents (ethanol/water), and a resin bond (Bis-GMA/TEGDMA, 50/50 wt%) were formulated. The adhesive system Scotchbond MultiPurpose (SBMP, 3M ESPE) was tested as commercial reference. Sixty bovine incisors were randomly separated into six groups, and their superficial coronal dentin was exposed. After acid etching and rinsing, the excess water was removed from the surface with absorbent paper. Each experimental primer was actively applied (30 s), followed by a mild air stream (10 s). The experimental adhesive resin was applied and light activated for 20 s. Resin composite restorations were incrementally built up. The restored teeth were stored in distilled water at 37 degrees C for 24 h, and then sectioned to obtain sticks with a cross-sectional area of approximately 0.5 mm(2), after which 24 specimens per group were subjected to the microTBS test. Data (MPa) were analyzed by One-way ANOVA, Tukey test (alpha=0.05) and Weibull analysis., Results: The P40 group showed microTBS means similar to those of the control (SBMP), whereas both had statistically higher values when compared with the other groups (p<0.001). Moreover, P40 showed higher structural reliability, represented by the high Weibull modulus and characteristic strength values. The lowest microTBS was observed in the P0, P10 and P20 groups, which also had low structural reliability., Significance: Bis-EMA 30 is a promising monomer to be considered as a substitute for HEMA in adhesive system compositions., (Copyright 2010 Elsevier Ltd. This study investigated the impact of different photo-activation protocols on selected properties of a model composite formulated using bis-GMA/TEGDMA (1:1 mass ratio), camphorquinone/amine (1:2 mass ratio) and 75% of fillers. The protocols tested were: high-intensity continuous (HIC-500 mW cm(-2) for 20 s), medium-intensity continuous (MIC-250 mW cm(-2) for 40 s), low-intensity continuous (LIC-100 mW cm(-2) for 100 s) and pulse-delay-1 min or 3 min (PD-1 min/3 min-100 mW cm(-2) for 5 s + 1 or 3 min interval + 500 mW cm(-2) for 19 s). Degree of conversion (DC) was evaluated using infrared spectroscopy. Flexural strength (FS) and modulus (FM) were measured in three-point bending mode. Cross-link density was estimated by calculating the swelling coefficient (alpha) after immersion in chloroform. All methods showed similar values for DC except for PD-1 min, which showed lower DC. HIC and MIC showed similar FS, but were both different than all of the other methods. All curing methods showed similar FM, except for HIC, which presented a different modulus. PD-3 min showed a different swelling than all of the remaining groups, while HIC showed the lowest swelling. A significant relationship was observed between swelling and both FS and FM. In conclusion, the HIC activation protocol generated polymers with properties at least similar, and sometimes improved, in comparison with the alternative protocols.

Since there is a lack of information on the surface properties of composite restorations achieved with standard polishing procedures after aging processes, this study evaluated the effects of immediate (IM) and delayed (DE) polishing on the surface roughness (Ra), microhardness (KHN) and microleakage (ML) of microfilled (Filtek A110) and hybrid (Filtek Z250) resin composites after one-year storage. Standardized preparations were made on the buccal surface of 256 bovine teeth, where half were restored with each composite. For each composite, the specimens were randomly allocated to two subgroups. The first group (IM) was polished immediately after gross finishing using three different systems/techniques (n=16): Sof-Lex, Flexicups and Flexicups + Jiffy Polishing Brush + Flexibuffs (sequential), then stored for three weeks in saline. The DE group was stored for two weeks, polished with the same systems and stored for one week. From each subgroup, eight specimens were assessed after three weeks regarding Ra, KHN and ML (baseline), andthe eight remaining specimens were stored for one year before analysis. The data were analyzed (alpha=0.05) with ANOVA, paired Student's t-test (Ra and KHN) or Kruskal-Wallis and Signed Rank tests (microleakage). After one year, microfilled resin composite specimens showed the lowest Ra and KHN (p<0.05). N o differencein microleakage was observed among the different groups (p>0.05). The sequential technique provided the lowest roughness and Sof-Lex the lowest hardness (p<0.05). IM showed similar or better performance than DE for ML and Ra (p<0.05). In conclusion, aging increased the composites Ra and ML in all experimental conditions (p<0.05).

This study evaluated the irradiance of curing units through core and veneered hot-pressed ceramics as well as the transmittance of these materials. Discs of 0.7, 1.4 and 2 mm in thickness of Empress (EMP) and Empress Esthetic (EST), and 0.8 (n=5) and 1.1 mm (n=5) thickness of Empress 2 (E2) were obtained. For E2, two of the 0.8-mm-thick discs were covered with dentin (1.2- and 1.4-mm-thick) and two with dentin + enamel (1.5-mm-thick). The 1.1-mm-thick specimens were submitted to the same veneering procedures. Specimens were evaluated by UV-Vis transmittance analysis and the percentage of transmittance was recorded. Irradiance through each specimen was evaluated with a quartz-tungsten-halogen (QTH), used in continuous or intermittent exposure modes, or a blue light-emitting diode (LED). Data were analyzed by Dunnett's test, ANOVA and Tukey's test at 5% significance level. Exposure through ceramic decreased the irradiance for all ceramics. Irradiance through EST was significantly higher than through EMP. For E2, reduction in irradiance depended on the core and/or veneer thickness. The QTH intermittent mode showed higher irradiance than the continuous mode, and both showed higher irradiance than LED. The ceramic significantly influenced irradiance and transmittance, which were found to decrease with the increase in thickness.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of an onium salt in the polymerization kinetics of a dental adhesive model resin. A monomer mixture, based on Bis-GMA, TEGDMA and HEMA, was used as a model dental adhesive resin, which was polymerized using camphorquinone (CQ) as a photo-initiator in addition to either binary or ternary photo-initiator systems. The binary systems were formulated with different concentrations of diphenyliodonium hexafluorphosphate or ethyl 4-dimethylaminobenzoate in relation to the monomer and 1mol% of CQ. The ternary system was a blend of 1mol% of CQ, 2mol% of ethyl 4-dimethylamino benzoate and 0.25, 0.5, 1, 2 or 4mol% of onium salt. Real time Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy was used to investigate the polymerization reaction over the photo-activation time. When CQ was used as photo-initiator, a slow polymerization reaction was observed and a lower monomer conversion. The addition of a second component (onium salt or amine) increases the polymerization rate and conversion independent on the co-initiator concentration. Ternary photo-initiator system showed an improvement on the polymerization rate of the dental adhesive model resin leading to high conversion in short photo-activation time. Also, a mechanism for initiating polymerization using an amine or onium salt as a co-initiator component is proposed.

The aim of this study was to verify the ability of different adhesive materials to prevent microleakage in bonded amalgam restorations. Standard cavities were prepared in both buccal and lingual surfaces of 35 bovine incisors. The gingival wall was located in cementum/dentin and the occlusal wall in enamel. Teeth (n=35) were divided into 5 groups, according to material employed (one glass-ionomer cement, two resin cements, one adhesive system, and Copalex varnish as a control). Following restoration, the teeth were submitted to thermal cycling. The teeth were subsequently immersed in methylene blue dye and sectioned to allow assessment of microleakage. Non-parametric statistical analysis indicated that all materials demonstrated less leakage than the control group (p<0.01). No leakage was found using the resin-modified glass-ionomer cement, which was significantly different from the other adhesive materials (p<0.05). Leakage in enamel was lower than in cementum/dentin margins. It was concluded that bonded amalgam was an effective technique, since all materials prevented microleakage in enamel and cementum/dentin, when compared to the control group, except Panavia in cementum/dentin margins.

This study aimed to evaluate the antimicrobial properties, cell viability, and matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) inhibition capacity of several endodontic materials aimed at vital pulp therapy: Pro Root MTA®, EndoSequence®, Biodentine®, MTA Angelus®, TheraCal LC®, and BioC Repair®. The materials were prepared according to the manufacturer's instructions. Antimicrobial tests were conducted using a microcosm biofilm model, cell viability was assessed using murine fibroblasts (L929), and MMP activity was analyzed through electrophoresis. The results showed that BioC Repair®, Biodentine®, and EndoSequence® exhibited similar antimicrobial properties, while MTA Angelus® and ProRoot MTA® had inferior results but were comparable to each other. In terms of cell viability, no significant differences were observed among the materials. EndoSequence® demonstrated the highest MMP inhibition capacity. In conclusion, BioC Repair®, Biodentine®, EndoSequence®, and TheraCal® showed better antimicrobial properties among the tested materials. The materials did not exhibit significant differences in terms of cytotoxicity. However, EndoSequence® displayed superior MMP inhibition capacity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: To evaluate through a systematic review and meta-analysis whether the immediate and long-term bonding performance of universal adhesives would be improved by prior acid etching. Materials and Methods: Two reviewers performed a literature search up to April 2018 in eight databases: PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, SciELO, Scopus, LILACS, IBECS, and BBO. Only studies that evaluated the dentin or enamel bond strength of universal adhesives using a self-etch or etch-and-rinse strategy were included. Analyses were carried out using RevMan 5.3.5 (The Nordic Cochrane Centre, The Cochrane Collaboration, Copenhagen, Denmark). A global analysis comparing self-etch or etch-and-rinse strategies and the influence of aging on bonding performance was performed with random-effects models at a significance level of p < 0.05. Results: A total of 59 in vitro studies were included in the meta-analysis. The enamel bond strength of universal adhesives was improved by the etch-and-rinse approach (p < 0.05). In dentin, this effect was observed for ultramild and intermediately strong universal adhesives (p < 0.05). Irrespective of the strategy employed, intermediately strong adhesives showed a decrease in bond strength after all types of aging. This effect was also observed for ultra- mild universal adhesives used in the etch-and-rinse approach (p < 0.05). Mild universal adhesives showed bond strength stability in both strategies (p > 0.05). Conclusions: The in vitro evidence suggests that bonding performance of mild universal adhesives can be improved by using the selective enamel-etch strategy. Mild universal adhesives seem to be the more stable materials, in both etch-and-rinse or self-etch strategies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper evaluates the physicochemical and biological properties of experimental resin-based dual-cured calcium aluminate (CA) and calcium titanate (CTi) materials for vital pulp therapy (VPT). The experimental dual-cured materials were obtained as two pastes: a) Bis-EMA 10, PEG 400, DHEPT, EDAB, camphorquinone, and butylated hydroxytoluene; and b) fluoride ytterbium, Bis-EMA 10, Bis-EMA 30, benzoyl peroxide, and butylated hydroxytoluene. The materials were divided into six groups based on the added calcium component: MTA (MTA®, Angelus); CLQ (Clinker-Fillapex®, Angelus); CA (calcined at, 1200°C in pastes a and b); CA800 (calcined at 800°C in paste a); CA1200 (calcined at 1,200°C in paste a); and CTi (paste a). The real-time degree of conversion and rate of polymerization (n = 3), diametral tensile strength (n = 10), hydrogen potential (n = 15), calcium ion release (n = 10), water sorption and solubility (n = 10), and cell viability (n = 6) were evaluated. One-and two-way ANOVA and Tukey's post hoc test were used in the analysis of the parametric data, and Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn's multiple tests were used to analyze the nonparametric data (α = 0.05). CLQ, CA800 and CA1200 had the highest diametral tensile strength. The water solubility of MTA was similar to that of CA800, CA1200 and CTi. CA800 and CA1200 resulted in cell viabilities similar to those of MTA and CLQ. The experimental dual-cured CA-based material that calcined at 800°C showed physicochemical and biological properties suitable for VPT, and similar to those of MTA. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: To evaluate the whiteness index (WID) and surface roughness (Ra) of bovine enamel after simulated tooth brushing with different commercial and experimental whitening dentifrices. Materials and Methods: Cylindrical enamel bovine specimens were acid etched, stained, and divided in nine groups (n = 8): Colgate® Optic White®, Crest® Baking Soda and Peroxide, Arm and Hammer® Advanced White™ Extreme Whitening, Rembrandt® Deeply White® + Peroxide, Close up® White Attraction Natural Glow, Hinode Prowhite, and experimental dentifrice containing papain (PP), bromelain (PB), or papain and bromelain (PPB). Ra and WID were obtained initially and after 600, 1200, and 3,600 cycles of simulated tooth brushing. Data were analyzed using two‐way analysis of variance test (α = 0.05). Results: Ra was significantly influenced by both dentifrice (p = 0.043) and period of tooth‐brushing simulation (p < 0.001). Except for PP and PPB, all groups showed a statistically significant increase in Ra after simulated tooth brushing. After staining and brushing, none of the materials tested increased the initial WID. Conclusions: The effect of commercial whitening dentifrices may be related to their high abrasiveness. Experimental formulations tested provided a similar effect without undesired wear of enamel. Whitening dentifrices only act through an abrasive effect rather than bleaching the tooth structures. When used, special care must be taken for avoid undesired wear of enamel. Experimental dentifrices provided similar removal of extrinsic stains without undesired abrasiveness; however, this effect may be due to the use of less aggressive abrasives in their formulations. The objective of this study was to evaluate the biocompatibility and mechanical properties of two commercially available and one experimental periodontal dressing materials. The cytotoxicity of Periobond®, Barricaid® and one experimental periodontal dressing based on Exothane® 8 monomer was tested on 3T3/NIH mouse fibroblast. Genotoxicity was assessed by micronuclei formation, and cell alterations were analyzed using light microscopy. Both biological assays were performed using the eluate obtained from specimens after 24, 72, or 168 hours of incubation. Mechanical characterization was assessed through the ultimate tensile strength and the water sorption and solubility tests. The significance level of a = 0.05 was used for all statistical analyses. All the materials promoted a cell viability lower than 60% in all evaluated times. In general, the cell viability was significantly reduced after 72 and 168h of specimens' incubation. Considering the factor material, there were not statistical differences in the cell viability (p = 0.156). The genotoxicity was not statistically significant among the groups in the different periods of time (p > 0.05). Differences in the ultimate tensile strength values were not statistically significant different among the groups (p = 0.125). Periobond® showed the higher water sorption values (p < 0.001). Regarding solubility, there were no statistical differences between the groups (p = 0.098). All the periodontal dressing materials evaluated in this study exerted a cytotoxic effect against mouse fibroblasts, and their toxicity became more evident over time. Objective: Dentin desensitizing agents are used in the treatment of dentin hypersensitivity, which is defined as a painful response in the exposed dentin to stimuli that are thermal, evaporative, tactile, osmotic, or chemical. A systematic review was conducted to analyze the clinical effectiveness of current desensitizer with at least 3 months of follow-up. Method and Materials: Eight electronic databases were searched: MedLine (PubMed), Embase, Lilacs, Ibecs, Web of Science, Scopus, Scielo, and The Cochrane Library. Only those clinical trials published from 2000 to 2012 were included. Results: A total of 3,029 relevant records were identified. After title and abstract examination, 2,645 articles were excluded. A data extraction form was designed and completed by reviewers from the selected studies for a retrospective comparison. From the 99 studies retrieved for detailed review, only 17 had an evaluation time of at least 3-months follow-up and fulfilled the selection criteria. Conclusion: Cervitec Plus, SE Bond & Protect Liner F, laser, and iontophoresis have shown satisfactory posttreatment results between 3 and 6 months. Objective. The aim of the present study was to characterize a novel resin-based monoblock endodontic obturation system consisting of a polymeric cone and a resin-based endodontic sealer. Methods. The preliminary tests performed for the experimental cone were as follows: cohesive strength, dimensional stability, standardization of the diameter and taper, calcium ion release, and radiopacity, for the characterization of the experimental sealer, film thickness and flow tests were performed. Tests were performed according to the American National Standards Institute/American Dental Association (ANSI/ADA) Standards Nos. 57 and 78. The experimental cone was compared to gutta-percha, whereas the experimental sealer was compared to AH Plus. Data were analyzed by Student's t-test (α = 0.05). Results. The experimental cone had superior values for cohesive strength and dimensional stability compared to gutta-percha. Regarding calcium ion release, the experimental system continued to release calcium ions after 30 days. Film thickness was similar for both endodontic sealers; conversely, the experimental resin-based sealer achieved higher values for flow compared to AH Plus. Conclusion. The experimental resin-based monoblock obturation system fully met the requirements of the ANSI/ADA Standard No. 78 and the ANSI/ADA Standard No. 57, except for radiopacity. Considering this, further studies are still needed to evaluate other radiopacifiers and the effect of their incorporation on the physicochemical properties of this novel resin-based monoblock endodontic obturation system. Purpose: To investigate the influence of different water concentrations in the solvents of self-etching primers on microtensile bond strength (μTBS) of an experimental adhesive system. Materials and Methods: Five experimental self-etching primers with 0, 5, 10, 20 and 40 (wt%) water as solvent were formulated. An experimental adhesive resin (AD-50) was also synthesized to create one experimental self-etching adhesive system. Clearfil SE Bond (CSEB) was used as the commercial reference. Sixty bovine incisors were randomly separated into 6 groups. Buccal enamel was removed to expose the superficial coronal dentin; this surface was polished wet to create a standardized smear layer. After rinsing, water was removed, leaving the surface visibly dried. The dentin surfaces were etched with primer and air dried, adhesive resin was applied and photoactivated, then the composite resin restoration was placed. After storage for 24 h, the specimens were sectioned with a cooled diamond saw at low speed. Microtensile bond strength was measured and data were analyzed with one-way ANOVA/Tukey's test (α = 0.05). Results: ANOVA showed that primer composition was a significant factor for bond strength. There was no significant difference in bond strengths between the primers with a water concentration of 40% (53.9 ± 12.7 MPa), 20% (51.1 ± 11.5 MPa, and 10% (47.5 ± 11.4 MPa), and CSEB (50.7 ± 9.8 MPa). The groups with 5% (38.6 ± 12.9 MPa) and 0% (31.5 ± 7.5 MPa) water presented similar bond strengths amongst themselves but were statistically significantly lower than that of the other groups. Objective: To evaluate the pulp response to direct capping with self-etching adhesive systems using sodium hypochlorite as a hemostatic agent. Method and Materials: Twenty-six human third molars scheduled for extraction were selected from undergraduate students of dentistry. Class I cavities with pulp exposures were performed. To control bleeding, 2.5% sodium hypochlorite was used for 20 seconds, followed by washing with saline solution. The pulp exposures were capped with calcium hydroxide (n = 10) or adhesive system (n = 16). All cavities were restored with adhesive system and composite resin. Half of the samples of each capping material were extracted after 30 days and the remaining after 90 days. The samples were prepared for histological analysis (hematoxylin-eosin) and bacterial detection (Brown & Hopps) and evaluated according to standard ranking. Data were submitted to statistical analysis (Mann-Whitney test). Results: There was a significant difference (P < .05) only in relation to dentin barrier formation. Pulps dressed with calcium hydroxide showed dentin barrier formation in all specimens, obliterating the exposure site. No inflammatory response was associated with material. In the experimental group, after 30 days, there was an attempt for healing with reparative dentin deposition, presenting a mild to moderate inflammatory infiltrate. Similar findings were found after 90 days, decreasing the inflammatory response. Bacteria were not detected in any specimen evaluated. Sodium hypochlorite was effective for hemostatic control. Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical performance of two polyacid-modified resin composites (Dyract AP and F2000) in posterior teeth after 1 year of clinical service. Materials and Methods: Seventy-two Class I restorations were performed in 33 patients (average age 25 years) by one operator. Eighty-two per cent of the restorations were located in molars. Before the proceedings, patients were informed about the aim of the study and they gave written consent to participate. At least one restoration of each material was placed in each individual. The materials were applied according manufacturer's instructions. Following finishing and polishing, one examiner performed the clinical baseline examination using the adapted USPHS system. To be included in the clinical trial, a restoration had to be rated "Alpha". After one year, 25 patients were recalled and 56 restorations were evaluated using the adapted USPHS system. Results: All restorations were classified as clinically satisfactory (Alpha or Bravo). However, there was a decrease in restoration quality compared to baseline. Statistical analysis (X² and Fisher's exact test) demonstrated differences only in relation to superficial roughness, with exhibiting F2000 more surface roughness than Dyract AP (p < 0.01). Conclusion: Based on the methodology employed, all restorations were satisfactory after one year and the two materials performed similarly, except for the surface roughness criteria. Introduction: This in vitro study aimed to evaluate the chemical composition, water solubility, radiopacity, pH, electrical conductivity and cytotoxicity of four different root canal sealers. Methods and Materials: Four materials were tested including an epoxy resin-based sealer (AH-Plus), a calcium silicate-based sealer (MTA Fillapex), a calcium hydroxide-based sealer (Sealapex) and a zinc-oxide-eugenol-based sealer (Endofill). The materials were submitted to energy-dispersive x-ray microanalysis for elemental chemical composition. Solubility and radiopacity were evaluated according to ANSI/ADA. The pH and electrical conductivity were measured at different periods of time. L929 immortalized mouse fibroblast line were used for cytotoxicity evaluation. Statistical analyses were carried out using the ANOVA and Tukey's test. Results: The main elements were found to be silicon and calcium in MTA Fillapex, calcium and bismuth in Sealapex, zirconium and tungsten in AH-Plus and zinc and bismuth in Endofill. Sealapex had the highest value for solubility (P<0.05), AH-Plus showed the highest radiopacity value (P<0.05) while MTA Fillapex had the highest pH and electrical conductivity values (P<0.05). AH-Plus showed the highest rate of cell viability (P<0.05). Conclusion: Based on the results of this in vitro study, it was possible to conclude that Endofill and Sealpex did not meet the requirements for water solubility. Study selection Only laboratory studies that evaluated polymerization shrinkage stress by direct testing were included. Pilot studies, reviews and in vitro studies that evaluated polymerization shrinkage stress by indirect methods (e.g., microleakage or cuspal deflection measurements), finite elemental analysis, or theoretical and mathematical models were excluded. Of the 6113 eligible articles, 62 studies were included in the qualitative analysis, and the meta-analysis was performed with 58 studies. The composition strategy was subdivided according to the modified part of the material: filler phase, coupling agent, or resin matrix. A global comparison was performed with random-effects models (α = 0.05). The only subgroup that did not show a statistical difference between the alternative strategy and the control was ‘the use of alternative photo-initiators’ (p = 0.29). Conclusion Modification of the resin matrix made the largest contribution to minimizing stress development. The technology used for decreasing stress in the formulation of low-shrinkage and bulk-fill materials was shown to be a promising application for reducing and controlling stress development. A global comparison was performed with random-effects models (α = 0.05). The strategies were subdivided as follows: the use of an alternative technique protocol of placing the material inside the tooth cavity; the modification of the irradiation intensity or total energy delivered to the material; the use of an alternative light-curing source; or the use of an alternative photo-activation mode. All alternative strategies showed statistically significant differences when compared with their respective controls (p < 0.05). Conclusion The use of alternative light-curing sources contributed more to minimizing stress development than placing the material by means of an alternative technique protocol or by modifying the irradiant intensity or total energy delivered to the material during photo-activation. Moreover, the use of an alternative photo-activation mode (intermittent light, exponential, soft-start or pulse delay modes) was shown to be an effective strategy for reducing and controlling stress development in resin-based dental materials. This study evaluated the three-year lifespan of the bond to dentin of experimental self-etch adhesives containing benzodioxole derivatives - 1,3-benzodioxole (BDO) and piperonyl alcohol (PA) - as co-initiator alternative to amines. Adhesive resins were formulated using Bis-GMA, TEGDMA, HEMA, camphorquinone and different co-initiators: BDO, PA or ethyl 4-dimethylamino benzoate (EDAB - amine). An experimental selfetch primer was used to complete the two-step, self-etch adhesive system. Clearfil SE Bond (CSE) was used as commercial reference. Bond strength to human dentin was assessed by microtensile bond strength (µTBS) test, and failure mode was classified. Morphology of the dentin bonding interface was assessed via scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Irrespective of the dental adhesives evaluated, µTBS was higher after 24 hours compared with that after 1.5 and 3 years (p = 0.001). However, adhesives with BDO and PA as co-initiators showed significantly higher bond strength than the bonding resin with EDAB (p = 0.002), independent of the time evaluated. The commercial adhesive CSE showed similar bond strength compared with the other groups (p = 0.05). Mixed failures were mainly observed after 24 hours, while adhesive failures were more frequently observed after 1.5 and 3 years. No notable differences in homogeneity and continuity along the bonded interfaces were detected among the materials in the SEM analysis. This study evaluated the anti-antibiofilm potential of silver methacrylate (Ag) or di- n -butyldimethacrylatetin (Sn) in experimental adhesive systems. Ag and Sn methacrylates were incorporated at 0.5 mol%, 1 mol% and 2 mol% in an adhesive resin. The anti-antibiofilm potential, degree of conversion (DC), microtensile bond strength (μTBS), water sorption/solubility (W SR/SL ), bonded interfaces pattern (SEM), cytotoxicity and leaching of Ag and Sn ions were evaluated. Data were statistically analyzed considering α = 0.05. Only Ag at 2% affected DC and μTBS. Ag at 1% and 2% and Sn at 1% and 2% showed anti-biofilm potential against Mutans streptococci. Ag at 1% and 2% and Sn at 2% showed a statistically significant difference to the control in W SR/SL (p < 0.05). The additions of metal methacrylate did not affect cell viability, being the adhesive resins statistically similar to controls. Leached metals of Ag were more than 100x higher than for Sn. Objectives: A systematic review was conducted to determine whether the etch-and-rinse or self-etching mode is the best protocol for dentin and enamel adhesion by universal adhesives. Study selection: In vitro studies evaluating the bond strength of universal adhesives to dentin and/or enamel by the etch-and-rinse and self-etch strategies were eligible to be selected. Statistical analyses were conducted using RevMan 5.1 (The Cochrane Collaboration, Copenhagen, Denmark). A global comparison was performed with random-effects models at a significance level of p < 0.05. Results:The analysis of dentin micro-tensile bond strength showed no statistically significant difference between the etch-and-rinse and self-etch strategies for mild universal adhesives (p≥0.05). However, for the ultra-mild All-Bond Universal adhesive, the etch-and-rinse strategy was significantly different than the self-etch mode in terms of dentin micro-tensile bond strength, as well as in the global analysis of enamel micro-tensile and micro-shear bond strength (p≤0.05). Conclusions: The enamel bond strength of universal adhesives is improved with prior phosphoric acid etching. However, this effect was not evident for dentin with the use of mild universal adhesives with the etch-and-rinse strategy. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of three experimental primers prepared with synthesized phosphorous and sulfur monomers (HEMA-P, ETMA and the mixture of HEMA-P/ETMA) on bonding to nickel–chromium (NiCr), silver–palladium (AgPd) and silver–gold (AgAu) metal alloys. The specimens were treated with experimental primers: HEMA-P, ETMA, HEMA-P/ETMA and Alloy Primer (Kuraray Noritake Dental Inc., Okayama, Japan) was used as commercial reference. Resin cement cylinders were built-up after application of tested primers on different alloy surfaces. Samples were stored in distilled water at 37 °C for 24 h before being subjected to shear bond tests using a mechanical testing machine. Shear bond strength (SBS) was recorded in MPa. Failure modes were classified under magnification as adhesive and mixed failure. Data were submitted to a two-way ANOVA and Student–Newman–Keuls׳ test. The statistically highest shear bond strength was observed with commercial primer to the AgPd alloy while the lowest value was shown with commercially available primers and experimental HEMA-P/ETMA to the NiCr alloy ( p <0.05). There was a predominance of adhesive failure, with the exception of commercially available primer, for which mixed failures were predominant. Aim: To evaluate the immediate microtensile bond strength (µTBS) of three two-step etch-and-rinse adhesive systems applied under different dentin surface moisture conditions. Methods: Class V cavities were prepared in seventy-two bovine incisors. Each tooth was randomly allocated into three groups, according to the adhesive system used: Single Bond 2 (SB), Prime & Bond 2.1 (PB) and XP Bond (XPB). Each group was divided in three subgroups, according to the dentin moisture condition: over-wet, moist and dry (n=8). For the moist subgroups the adhesive was applied as to the manufacturer's instructions; for the over-wet ones, without drying the cavity after the rinsing procedure; and for the dry subgroups, drying the surface for 20 s. The teeth were restored with Filtek Z-250 and stored in distilled water (24 h); next, each restoration was sectioned in beam-shaped specimens which were stored for 24 h at 37 °C. Each specimen was submitted to µTBS test (EMIC), and data were analyzed using two-way ANOVA and Tukey test (p<0.05). Results: There was a statistically significant interaction between the adhesive system type and the dentin surface moisture condition (p=0.003). SB and XPB presented higher bond strength in the moist dentin condition, and PB showed high µTBS values in the dry substrate. Conclusions: The moisture condition influenced the bond strength between the adhesives and dentin. SB performed better in the moist condition, whereas PB and XPB showed satisfactory bond strength in the moist and in the dry substrates. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of functionalizing a dental adhesive resin with YbF3/SiO2 fillers for use as radiopacifiers. Particles of YbF3/SiO2 were obtained with the high-energy mechanical milling method and characterized by both physical and chemical methods. After characterization, the particles were sieved and silanized prior to being incorporated into an adhesive resin. The stability of the particle suspension was then evaluated. After light activation, the radiopacity, degree of conversion, flexural strength and elastic modulus were determined. The dental adhesive resins with 10 and 15 wt% of filler provided satisfactory radiopacity, while flexural strength and elastic modulus were not affected. The degree of conversion was statistically lower than that of the control (p<0.05). The method used for incorporating the tested ytterbium fluoride/silicon dioxide particles at concentrations of 10 and 15 wt% was shown to be feasible for the development of a radiopaque dental adhesive system. Abstract: This study investigated the impact of immediate and delayed light activation on self-polymerization of a model dual-cured luting agent. The material presented the following components: base paste – 2,2-bis[4-(2-hydroxy-3-methacryloxyprop-1-oxy)phenyl]propane/triethylene glycol dimethacrylate (TEGDMA), camphorquinone, dimethyl-p-toluidine, butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), glass fillers; catalyst paste – bisphenol-A ethoxylated dimethacrylate/TEGDMA, benzoyl peroxide, BHT, fillers. The pastes were mixed and seven polymerization scenarios tested: immediate light activation using low (5Jcm−2) or high (20Jcm−2) energy dose; delayed light activation (after 2min – short delay) using low or high dose; delayed light activation (after 10min – long delay) using low or high dose; and self-polymerization only. The degree of conversion (DC) and rate of polymerization (R p) were evaluated for 30min by real-time infrared spectroscopy. The lowest DC was detected for the self-polymerized and immediate–low dose groups, whereas the immediate–high dose and short delay–high dose groups showed the highest values. For the self-polymerized and immediate–high dose samples, R p max was detected after approximately 7s, whereas this took approximately 14s for the immediate–low dose group. R p max for the immediate–high dose group was higher than for the self-polymerized sample, which in turn was higher than for the immediate–low dose group. R p max for the short delay groups was higher than for the long delay groups. In conclusion, the extent of self-polymerization was influenced by the light dose reaching the material, which was dependent on high radiant exposure for optimal polymerization and the moment at which the light was applied; the short delay increased the DC for lower doses, while also generally decreasing the R p for all scenarios. This study investigates the in-depth polymerization of dual-cured resin cement (Enforce; Dentsply, shades A2, B1, and opaque). Cylindrical specimens are obtained by photo-activation through ceramic. Control samples are light-cured without using ceramic. Samples are tested after 15 min or 24 h. Knoop hardness readings are made at 100, 300, 500, and 700 µm depth. Hardness is generally dependent on the mode of activation and post-cure time. Shades A2 and B1 show higher hardness values than opaque resin. Hardness at 100 µm is higher than at 700 µm. The objective of this work was to synthesize two bio‐based monomers, using the resorcinol as raw material, and its effect as bisphenol A glycidyl dimethacrylate (Bis‐GMA) eluents on different chemical–physical and biological properties of experimental photopolymerizable composite resins. The acrylic 1,3‐phenylen diacrylic (1,3‐FDA) and methacrylic 1,3‐phenylen dimethacrylic (1,3‐FDMA) monomers were synthesized and fully characterized through FTIR and 1H‐NMR spectroscopies. Experimental photopolimerizable composites were formulated using Bis‐GMA/1,3‐FDA or Bis‐GMA/1,3‐FDMA as organic matrix. The materials were compared with a Bis‐GMA/TEGDMA resin‐based composite used as control. Polymerization kinetics was evaluated by means of FTIR spectroscopy. Polymerization stress was directly measured through a polymerization stress tester. The cell viability of the composites was evaluated using the MTT assay. One‐way analysis of variance and Tukey's test were used for statistical analysis. The materials formulated with the 1,3‐FDA monomer showed higher Rpmax values and lower polymerization stress values (p < 0.05), while the flexural strength, water sorption, and solubility remained similar to the TEGDMA composite. Conversely, the materials formulated with the 1,3‐FDMA monomer showed a lower degree of conversion and statistically lower flexural strength (p < 0.05). All materials exhibited a cellular viability close to 100%. This work aimed to examine the effect of unreacted substances of four universal adhesives on cell viability, taking into account different sample preparation protocols. The protocols for sample preparation were as follows: P1: Disc-shaped specimens made of the adhesive material itself; P2: filter paper disc impregnated with the adhesive system; P3: bovine dentin disc impregnated with the adhesive system. The UHPLC/Q-TOF-MS spectroscopy was utilized to detect the type and quantity of unreacted substances released. The cell viability of the universal adhesives was evaluated considering the sample preparation protocol, as well as the different concentrations of each compound detected by the UHPLC/Q-TOF-MS spectroscopy in their isolated form. The WST-1 assay was employed to assess cell viability. From the extraction media, HEMA, BisGMA, CQ, EDAB, TPO, and UDMA were identified. When evaluated in P1, significantly higher amounts of CQ were detected in all of the universal adhesives (p<0.001). The sample preparation protocol was found to significantly influence cell viability (p<0.001). Notably, all universal adhesives exhibited a cytotoxic effect only when using the P1 protocol. Among the analyzed substances, CQ was identified as the most cytotoxic component (p<0.05). Forty-eight bovine incisors were used in the study, which were allocated in two groups according to the bond strength test performed: microtensile (µTBS) or microshear (µSBS). Also, each group was divided in three subgroups according to the adhesive system applied: Single Bond (SB), Prime & Bond (PB) and XP Bond (XPB) (n=8). The teeth were prepared according to each bond strength test protocol, and then the specimens were tested in an universal testing machine (EMIC). The data were submitted to two-way ANOVA (bond strength test and adhesive system type factors) and Tukey's post hoc test (α=0.05). The µTBS results were higher for all the adhesives when compared to the µSBS ones. Within the µTBS results, SB showed higher bond strength than PB and XPB, which showed similar adhesive performance among each other; within the µSBS results, all the adhesives presented similar bond strength values to dentin. The µTBS test detected differences between the adhesive systems evaluated; in contrast, the µSBS test was less discriminating in evaluating the adhesive performance of the materials tested. Abstract: Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate new dentin bonding agents formulated with 2,3-epithiopropyl methacrylate (ETMA) comonomer blends. Methods: Synthesis and characterization of ETMA were performed. Adhesive resins with three different ETMA concentrations (0.1, 1 and 10wt.%) were prepared. To comparison a blend with only Bis-GMA/HEMA and with 1% of GMA were used as controls. FTIR analysis was used to verify the degree of conversion. Blend copolymerization was investigated by 1H NMR spectroscopy analysis. To investigate immediate properties of experimental adhesives, microtensile bond strength to human dentin and SEM fractographic analysis were studied. Results: ETMA was synthesized with 90% yield through a one step synthetic route. Degree of conversion for the experimental and control resins was not significantly different. Different monomers showed copolymerization among them, not presenting traces of ETMA release in 0.1 and 1% groups. Bonding agents containing ETMA had statistically higher microtensile bond strength values than the no ETMA adhesive (p <0.05). Conclusions: Dental adhesive resin–ETMA mixtures produced increased bond strengths without harming the other properties investigated. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
