The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of maleic acid (MA) on both the bond strength of fibre post to root dentine and smear layer removal after post space preparation. Sixty, single-canal premolars were endodontically treated and randomly assigned to four groups: group 1 [0.9% saline solution (control]); group 2 [2.5% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl)]; group 3 [17% ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) followed by 2.5% NaOCl]; and group 4 (7% MA followed by 2.5% NaOCl). Self-adhesive resin cement was used to test the adhesion of a glass-fibre post to the root dentine through a micropush-out test. Scanning electron microscopy was performed to examine and score the treated specimens for smear layer removal, and stereomicroscopy was applied to investigate the failure modes of fibre posts. Maleic acid exhibited the highest mean bond-strength values in the apical regions among all the groups. Most failure modes (31.9%) were adhesive-type failures between the dentine and luting materials. Maleic acid performed statistically significantly better than the other groups regarding smear layer removal, especially in the apical region. Group 3: 7% maleic acid, Group 4: 2.5% sodium hypochlorite (5 ml/min), Group 5: Saline (control). Specimens were subjected to microhardness and surface roughness testing. Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of QMix, EDTA + CHX, EDTA + NaOCl and maleic acid on the microhardness of root canal dentine., Methods: Forty recently extracted human maxillary canine teeth were longitudinally sectioned into 80 segments and then embedded in an autopolymerizing acrylic resin. The microhardness of the dentine in the specimen was measured with a Vickers diamond indenter at the coronal, middle and apical thirds of the roots. Finally, the specimens were divided randomly into four groups: 17% EDTA + 2.5% NaOCl; 17% EDTA + 2% CHX; QMix; and 7% maleic acid. Post-treatment microhardness values were obtained and the decrease in microhardness was calculated as a percentage. Microhardness values were statistically analysed using the Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U tests., Results: Maleic acid significantly decreased microhardness in all regions, compared to the other groups. In the coronal and middle regions, there was no significant difference among the other groups. In the apical region, there was no significant difference between QMix and 17% EDTA + 2% CHX but these groups presented significant dentine microhardness reduction compared to the 17% EDTA + 2.5% NaOCl group., Conclusions: While maleic acid showed the greatest reduction in dentine microhardness, it was found that QMix, 17% EDTA + 2% CHX and 17% EDTA + 2.5% NaOCl cause the same reduction in the microhardness of root canal dentine in the coronal and middle regions., (© 2015 Australian Dental Association.)

This study aimed to compare the effects of different irrigants on root dentine microhardness, erosion and smear layer removal. A total of 72 root dentine slices were divided into six groups, according to the final irrigants used: Group 1: 17% ethylenediamine tetra-acetic acid (EDTA) + 2.5% NaOCl, Group 2: 7% maleic acid (MA) + 2.5% sodium hypochloride (NaOCl), Group 3: 1.3% NaOCl + mixture of tetracycline, acid and detergent (MTAD), Group 4: Smear Clear + 2.5% NaOCl, Group 5: 5% NaOCl, Group 6: saline. Vickers microhardness values were measured before and after treatment. In total, 42 root-halves were prepared for scanning electron microscope to evaluate the amount of smear and erosion in the coronal, middle and apical thirds. Data were analysed using two-way anova, Duncan and two-proportion z-tests. Maleic acid showed the greatest reduction in dentine microhardness (P < 0.05), followed by EDTA and MTAD. EDTA, maleic acid, MTAD and Smear Clear removed smear layer efficiently in the coronal and middle thirds of root canal. However, in the apical region, maleic acid showed more efficient removal of the smear layer than the other irrigants (P < 0.05)., (© 2011 The Authors. Objectives: The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate the wettability of AH Plus and ThermaSeal Plus sealers on intraradicular dentine treated with different irrigating solutions., Methods: Fifty anterior teeth were decoronated and split longitudinally. Each root half was divided into 5 groups (n=10). Group I: 5mL of 2.5% NaOCl+QMix. Group II: 5mL of 2.5% NaOCl+17% EDTA. Group III: 5mL of 2.5% NaOCl+7% maleic acid. Group IV: 5mL of 2.5% NaOCl. Group V: 5mL of distilled water. Irrigation regimens were performed for 1min. Each specimen was placed inside a Dynamic Contact Angle Analyser. A controlled-volume droplet of sealer was placed on each specimen and the static contact angle was analysed., Results: The contact angle made by both sealers with EDTA-irrigated dentine was significantly larger when compared to the other irrigants (P<0.05). For ThermaSeal Plus, contact angles produced on maleic acid-, NaOCl- and distilled water-irrigated dentine were not significantly different, but were all significantly larger than the contact angle produced on QMix-irrigated dentine (P<0.05). For AH Plus, contact angles produced on NaOCl- and distilled water-irrigated dentine were not significantly different, but were significantly larger than those made by maleic acid and QMix., Conclusion: When used as a final irrigant, QMix favours the wetting of root canal dentine by both AH Plus and ThermaSeal Plus sealers. Maleic acid shows a promising result when compared to EDTA and NaOCl. Wettability of both sealers is the worst on EDTA-irrigated dentine., Clinical Significance: The present study highlights the effect of newer endodontic irrigating solutions on the wettability of sealers on to the root canal dentine, which is required for obtaining good obturation seal., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the decalcifying efficacy of 7% maleic acid (MA), 2% chlorhexidine (CHX), and combinations of 7% MA + 0.2% cetrimide (CTR) and 2% CHX + 0.2% CTR, in four time periods., Study Design: Four specimens per tooth were obtained from a 2-mm thick slice of the cervical third of the root of ten human incisors. At 1, 2, 3 and 5 minutes of immersion, the concentrations of Ca2+ were measured by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The results were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney U-test., Results: Statistically significant differences were seen for the extracted calcium in all time periods. The amount of calcium extracted by 7% MA was the highest at all four immersion times, followed by 7% MA + 0.2% CTR. Two percent CHX and its combination with 0.2% CTR extracted virtually no calcium., Conclusions: The decalcifying capacity of 7% MA and 2% CHX diminished when combined with 0.2% CTR.

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate mineral contents of root canal dentin after treatment with 7% maleic acid (MA) or 17% EDTA., Study Design: Thirty pieces of teeth were divided into 3 groups: 1) 17% EDTA; 2) 7% MA; and 3) saline. All specimens were treated for 0, 1, 5, 10, 15 minutes. Levels of calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, sodium, sulfur, and oxygen were measured using energy dispersive spectrometer. Data were analyzed using 1-way analysis of variance. Tukey honest significant difference and Bonferroni test were used for comparison between the groups and time periods., Results: MA reduced maximum amount of calcium and phosphorus at all time intervals, but was significant only up to 5 minutes (P < .001). Oxygen, sulfur, and magnesium were decreased more with saline and least with MA (P < .001). Sodium was decreased more with MA and least with EDTA (P < .001)., Conclusions: MA decalcifies the root dentin, with most calcium and phosphorus extracted during the first 5 minutes, compared with EDTA., (Copyright © 2011 Mosby, Inc. Introduction: The use of root canal irrigating solutions exerting antimicrobial activity and prolonged residual activity is desirable in order to control dentin infection and delay reinfection of the root canal. The aim of this study was to evaluate the residual antimicrobial activity and the capacity to eradicate Enterococcus faecalis biofilm of different irrigating solutions, alone and in combination, in a dentin-volumetric test., Methods: Solutions of 2.5% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl), 2% chlorhexidine (CHX), 0.2% cetrimide (CTR), 17% ethylendiaminetetraacetic (EDTA), 7% maleic acid (MA), and regimens of 2.5% NaOCl followed by 17% EDTA or 7% MA and 0.2% CTR or 2% CHX were used to determine their residual activity by exposing treated dentin blocks to E. faecalis for 24 hours. Antimicrobial activity was assayed on 3-week biofilm formed on dentin blocks. Results of residual activity and antimicrobial activity were respectively expressed as the inhibition percentage of biofilm formation and the kill percentage of biofilm., Results: A 2% CHX and 0.2% CTR solution showed 100% biofilm inhibition; 2.5% NaOCl showed the lowest residual activity (18.10%). The kill percentage of 2.5% NaOCl and 0.2% CTR was 100% followed by 7% MA and 2% CHX, whereas 17% EDTA was the least effective (44%). Solutions of 7% MA or 17% EDTA followed by 0.2% CTR or 2% CHX showed 100% residual and antimicrobial activity., Conclusions: A 0.2% CTR solution alone and the combinations in which 2% CHX or 0.2% CTR was the final irrigating solution achieved the maximum residual and antimicrobial activity., (Copyright © 2011 American Association of Endodontists. Introduction: The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effect of 7% maleic acid and 17% EDTA solutions on the microhardness and the surface roughness of human root canal dentin., Methods: Forty-five extracted human maxillary central incisors were sectioned longitudinally into a total of 90 segments, were embedded in auto polymerizing acrylic resin, and were grounded flat with silicon carbide abrasive papers. Based on the test solutions used, samples were divided randomly into three groups: (1) the EDTA group, 1 mL of 17% EDTA for 1 minute (n = 30), (2) the maleic acid group, 1 mL of 7% maleic acid for 1 minute (n = 30), and (3) the control group, 1 mL of 0.9% saline for 1 minute (n = 30). Every group was then divided into two subgroups of 15 specimens each. In group 1a, 2a, and 3a, specimens were used to determine the microhardness of the root canal dentine in the coronal, middle, and apical third using Vicker's hardness tester. In groups 1b, 2b, and 3b, specimens were used for the determination of surface roughness of the root canal dentine using a roughness tester (Surtronic, Leicester, England). The data were statistically analyzed using the Kruskall Wallis and Mann Whitney U tests., Results: There was no significant difference between EDTA and maleic acid in the reduction of microhardness. The increase in roughness was significantly greater with maleic acid when compared with EDTA., Conclusion: Maleic acid reduced the microhardness of root dentin similar to EDTA but increased the surface roughness significantly more than EDTA., (Copyright 2010 American Association of Endodontists. Purpose: To evaluate if different acid treatments of dentin surface might remove different amount of mineralized dentin, thus exposing and modifying the CF network., Methods: Dentin disks prepared from human third molars with a low-speed diamond saw were etched for 15 seconds with the tested acids: citric acid 10%, maleic acid 10%, 2.5% oxalic acid, 35% phosphoric acid and 24% EDTA gel. Specimens were then submitted to a 5% solution of NaOCl for 2 minutes or 5 minutes, fixed, and observed utilizing a field emission in lens SEM (FEISEM). Control specimens were also prepared by omitting the etching agent and/or the NaOCl solution., Results: The different acid treatments created specific dentin morphological pattern. CF exposure was in relationship with the acid used. The NaOCl solution greatly affects the acid etched dentin by removing the CF, nevertheless the effect of NaOCl was greatly influenced by the previous acid treatment.

Objectives: This study evaluated the ultra-morphological effects of maleic and citric acid on human dentin by means of a field emission in-lens scanning electron microscope (FEISEM). Both acids were tested on human dentin at pH 0.7 and 1.4 in aqueous solutions., Methods: Each of 12 dentin disks were divided into four groups and exposed to either maleic acid at pH 0.7, maleic acid at pH 1.4, citric acid at pH 0.7 and citric acid at pH 1.4. All samples were then fixed and dehydrated in a critical point drying apparatus. Observations were carried out by means of a FEISEM (JEOL 890) after coating with a carbon-platinum film., Results: Both acids removed smear layer and partially removed smear plugs. Details of fine structures measuring from 5 to 15 nm were shown on the intertubular demineralized dentin. Maleic acid at pH 0.7 showed the highest depth of demineralization of all the tested samples; citric acid, showed a higher depth of demineralization values when tested at pH 1.4 than at pH 0.7., Significance: The FEISEM reveals ultra-structural aspects of the demineralization process of the dentin tissue of the both acids tested. Differences related to the pH of the acids were found. Images obtained at high magnification clarify the dentin collagen structure of both peritubular and intertubular dentin. Small periodic structures associated with collagen fibrils were also imagined.

The use of disinfectants on the dentin surface contributes to superficial cleaning and removal of remaining microorganisms of the carious process. However, the effect of these agents on the adhesion of resin materials to the dentin surface of primary teeth has not been established. This study evaluated the dentin micromorphological effects due to the use of antimicrobial agents in the different depths of dentin. Twenty-five buccal surfaces of primary molars were prepared from the sectioned teeth, ground flat and polished with silicon carbide paper of different grits. The surfaces were treated with 32% phosphoric acid with benzalkonium chloride (Bisco), 35% phosphoric acid gel (3 M), 3% benzalkonium chloride solution by itself or 10% maleic acid. All agents were applied for 15 seconds on the dentin surface. The samples were washed with distilled water, dried and coated with gold for observation of the dentin surface with the scanning electron microscope. The samples were subdivided according to the dentin depth in upper, middle and lower areas. The following was observed: presence of smear layer, opening of the dentin tubules, and inter and intratubular dentin morphology. The effects of the antimicrobial agents were compared in the different depths of the dentin. The results demonstrated that the surface conditioned with 3% benzalkonium chloride solution presented few disclosed dentin tubules. The use of the 32% phosphoric acid with benzalkonium chloride completely removed the smear layer and increased the diameter of the dentin tubule openings. The 35% phosphoric acid totally exposed the tubules in the upper area of the analyzed surface but partially exposed them in the middle and lower areas. The 10% maleic acid totally removed the smear layer, left all the tubules opened and conditioned the intertubular dentin. It was concluded that in the different depths of the dentin surface, conditioning with 10% maleic acid in primary teeth showed the most consistent micromorphological characteristics compared to the other agents used in this study.

Various etchants/conditioners are used during dental treatment to affect or remove the smear layer. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of different treatments on moist dentine, using a field emission environmental scanning electron microscope (FE-ESEM). Twenty freshly extracted, human molar teeth were utilised. The roots and pulps were removed, and the crowns horizontally sectioned with a low speed diamond saw (Isomet) (with cooling in a saline solution) in order to expose superficial dentine. A smear layer was created on these surfaces by using 600 grit silicone carbide paper. Test surfaces were then treated in one of the following ways: 1. 37% phosphoric acid liquid 2. 37% phosphoric acid gel 3. NRC (non-rinse conditioner) without rinsing 4. NRC with rinsing. Shallow grooves were cut on the untreated sides, using a thin diamond bur. This enabled the samples to be split in half when pressure was applied in the grooves. Samples were maintained moist throughout specimen preparation. Samples were examined in the FE-ESEM (Philips XL 30) in such a way that the effect of the treatment could be viewed occlusally, as well as perpendicular to the treated interface. Phosphoric acid liquid and gel removed the smear layer, and demineralised the dentine for approximately 5-10 micrometers. NRC penetrated the smear layer and modified it to a lesser degree. However, washing of the NRC treated surface removed part of the smear layer, and opened up some dentinal tubules. Excellent resolution was possible with the FE-ESEM in both the wet and dry modes.

A total of 103 clinical samples of carious dentin were used to study the antibacterial action of different dental resin adhesive materials (Gluma 2000, Syntac, Prisma Universal Bond 3, Scotchbond Multi-Purpose and Prime&Bond 2.0) glass ionomer cements (Ketac-Cem, Ketac-Bond, Ketac-Silver, Ketac-Fil) resin-modified glass ionomer cements (Fuji II LC, Vitremer and Vitrebond) and a compomer (Dyract). The agar plate diffusion method was used for the microbial cultures and a chlorhexidine control. The growth of the caries-producing microorganisms was effectively inhibited by the Vitremer and Vitrebond cements, and to a lesser extent by the Scotchbond Multi-Purpose adhesive system. Overall, there were statistically significant differences in the antibacterial activity of the products tested.

Purpose: To investigate the effect of a new non-rinse conditioner (NRC) and 17% EDTA as etchants on the micromorphology of primary tooth enamel and dentin, in comparison with 36% phosphoric acid (PA) when applied for 15 s and 7 s., Materials and Methods: Enamel specimens obtained from 40 extracted primary second molars were used to create four groups (n=10) which received the following treatments on unground enamel surface: Group 1: 36% PA/15 s, Group 2: 36% PA/7 s, Group 3: NRC 20 s, Group 4: 17% EDTA/60 s. The same treatments were applied on flattened primary tooth dentin specimens (four groups/n=10). All treated surfaces were examined by SEM., Results: For enamel specimens, a Type II etching pattern was evident in Groups 1 and 3. In Group 2, an uneven Type II pattern was present with prism peripheries partially intact. A mixture of Type II and Type III etching patterns were observed in Group 4. Although all conditioners removed dentin smear to varying degrees, the overall performance of 17% EDTA was weaker than PA and NRC.

Thirty-six noncarious human molars were extracted and stored in saline. The buccal surfaces were ground wet on 400-grit silicon carbide paper to create a flat surface. The enamel and dentin surfaces were treated with 35% phosphoric acid gel, 10% phosphoric acid gel and 10% maleic acid gel for 15 and 60 seconds. Scanning electron microscope analysis showed that all the acid etchants modified the micromorphological appearance of enamel and dentin surfaces independent of the type of acid, the etching time and the concentration. On the enamel surface, the 35% and 10% phosphoric acid gels and the 10% maleic acid gel applied for 15 or 60 seconds preferentially removed the prism core material. In the specimens treated for 15 seconds with 10% maleic acid the prism core material was partially removed. On the dentin surface, the phosphoric acid gels (35% and 10%) and the 10% maleic acid gel applied for 15 and 60 seconds removed the smear layer and opened the dentinal tubule orifices; however, the dentinal surface etched for 15 or 60 seconds with 10% maleic acid gel showed residues of the smear layer.

The literature suggest differences between primary and permanent teeth regarding the composition and morphology of the dentin. The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of two dentin conditioners on the micromorphology of the dentin surface of primary and permanent teeth. Human extracted and noncarious molars were divided into four groups and conditioned with either 10% phosphoric acid (All-Bond 2) or 10% maleic acid (Scotchbond Multi-Purpose) for different time periods. SEM photomicrographs (1500x) were taken from the conditioned dentin and evaluated blindly by three calibrated examiners. The results indicate that the smear layer was removed more easily from primary teeth than from permanent teeth (P = 0.0001), which suggests greater reactivity to acidic dentin conditioners. We also found that the longer the time of application of dentin conditioner the more smear layer is removed (P = 0.0094). In comparing primary and permanent dentin, the results of this study indicate that less time is required for appropriate acid conditioning of primary dentin surfaces. Such a differentiated protocol for bonding to primary tooth dentin results in surface morphological characteristics similar to those found in conditioned permanent teeth.

The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate, using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), the effects of acid solutions on dentin surface, and to analyze the depth of demineralization that the acid solutions cause on dentin, using different acids. Fifteen 3-mm thick dentin discs were prepared from the middle third of human molars. Standard smear layer was prepared on the dentin surface using 600 grit sandpaper, for 1 minute. The acids used were 10%, 35% and 37.5% phosphoric acid and 10% maleic acid, for 15 seconds, washed and dried. The control group received no treatment. Dentin discs were fractured, observed on the horizontal surface and also on the fractured surface to evaluate the depth of demineralization. Specimens were immersed in 4% glutaraldehyde in phosphonate buffer, and prepared for SEM examination at 2000X and 4000X magnification. Acid etching of dentin, regardless of the concentration of phosphoric acid, caused removal of the smear layer, exposing the apertures of dentinal tubules. This was not observed when 10% maleic acid was used. At the fractured surface, one could observe an increase in demineralization of the width of dentinal tubules, to a specific depth of about 8.19 to 11 mm, except for 10% maleic acid.

Objective: The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of some acidic conditioners on dentin morphology, molecular composition and collagen conformation in situ., Methods: Smear layer-covered dentin specimens prepared from third molars immediately after extraction were imaged by tapping made AFM and analyzed by MIR-FTIR spectroscopy. The same specimens were subjected to conditioning treatments with CA Agent (Kuraray), Scotchbond Etchant (3M Dental Products) and Scotchbond MP Etchant (3M Dental Products) gels and then imaged and analyzed again. The extent of dentin decalcification at the uppermost 2 microns region was calculated from the percentage reduction in the-PO4/amide I peak area ratio of conditioned specimens relative to their individual smear layer-covered references. These results were compared by ANOVA and Scheffé statistical analyses. The conformational changes of dentin type I collagen at the region were studied qualitatively by deconvoluting the amide I bands of MIR-FTIR spectra and assigning the band components to carbonyl hydrogen bonding states related to the alpha-helix structure., Results: All the conditioners removed the smear layer, funneled the tubules, increased the intertubular roughness and contaminated the dentin surfaces with residues from irreversibly adsorbed thickening agents. Conditioned dentin surfaces showed a reduction in orthophosphates and carbonates and an increase in amide I, II and III groups. CA Agent manifested a significantly lower extent of dentin decalcification than Scotchbond etchants (p < 0.05). Collagen conformational changes involved a decrease in intermolecular hydrogen bonded amide I carbonyls associated with the alpha-helix structure and enhancement of imide carbonyls hydrogen bonded to water, which suggest collagen denaturation., Significance: Apart from dentin decalcification, the acidic conditioners induced considerable changes on dentin collagen conformation mostly associated with denaturation processes. In addition, irreversibly adsorbed residual thickeners substantially modified the morphology and composition of dentin surfaces. These findings show the complex interaction pathways between conditioners and dentin surfaces and the great potential of modern in situ imaging and analysis techniques in probing these interactions.

Nine noncarious human molars were extracted and stored in saline solution. Three standard occlusal cavities with beveled enamel margins were prepared on each tooth and etched with the etching solutions of three dentinal adhesive systems: (1) 37% phosphoric acid solution, (2) 4.3% oxalic acid and 2.6% aluminum salts solution, and (3) 10% maleic acid solution. Scanning electron microscopic analysis revealed that all the etching solutions affected the enamel surface morphology. The solution of oxalic acid and aluminum salts removed primarily the prism core material and partially the periphery of the prisms, but did not affect the nonbeveled enamel surface. Phosphoric and maleic acids removed both prism core materials and prism periphery; these specimens also showed areas in which no prism morphology could be detected. These two acids also removed apatite crystals from the prism core of the intact enamel surface.

This study used scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to evaluate the effects of various acid conditioners (etchants) on dentine surfaces. The conditioners completely removed the smear layer from dentine and opened the dentinal tubules, but some also left debris or a reaction product on the surface. The study also evaluated the resin-dentine interfaces produced by five new-generation dentine bonding systems: All-Bond 2, Amalgambond, Gluma 2000, OptiBond, and Scotchbond Multi-Purpose. All-Bond 2, Amalgambond, OptiBond, and Scotchbond Multi-Purpose formed acid-resistant hybrid layers and intra-tubular resin tags when they were applied to visibly moist dentine.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of six treatments on the dispersive, acid, and base components of the free surface energy of dentin., Methods: Occlusal dentin surfaces were polished with 4000 grit abrasive paper, washed and air dried. Characteristics of the surface energy were calculated by measuring contact angles of the four following liquids:alpha-bromonaphtalene, glycerol, ethylene glycol, and water. The dentin was then treated with aqueous solutions containing: (1) oxalic acid and glycine (OX/GLY),(2) oxalic acid, glycine, and HEMA (OX/GLY/HEMA), (3) phosphoric acid (PA), (4) maleic acid (MA),(5) EDTA, or (6) NaCIO. After treatment, washing and air drying, the energy characteristics of the samples were evaluated again., Results: Three kinds of wetting behavior were observed: an increase (OX/GLY/HEMA), a stabilization (PA, NaCIO) or a decrease (OX/GLY, MA, EDTA) of the wettability of the dentin surface. The calculations demonstrated that dentin surfaces are basic., Significance: This study of the evolution of the surface energy components gave information on adhesion mechanisms involving hydrophilic and hydrophobic interactions. The results may be helpful in the formulation of conditioners and primers.

This study critically examined the surface and subsurface effects of selected dentin priming agents. Various dentin priming agents were used and specimens were prepared for SEM examination by conventional air drying or by a freeze fracture and critical point drying technique. The results showed that in specimens prepared by freeze fracture and critical point drying technique the demineralization of the dentin surface and subsurface by priming agents leaves a visible network of collagen fibrils. This technique allows better evaluation of the adaptation of bonding resins to the collagen network of the demineralized layer.

Research into polymer systems capable of bonding to dentin and enamel have resulted in improved bond strengths that allow more conservative restoration and strengthening of teeth. However, pretreatment of the dentin and enamel of various sorts, including exposure to laser energy, have been espoused to enhance this bonding. This study investigated the effects of two pretreatments, acid and CO2 laser exposure, both alone and in combination, on the surface topography of prepared dentin specimens as observed by scanning electron microscopy. Eighteen dentin specimens were flat-sanded with 600 grit sandpaper and exposed to 10% maleic acid and CO2 laser both alone and in combination. SEM observation suggested that laser treatment prior to acid etching could increase the resistance of the smear layer to acid removal, that laser exposure after acid treatment could expose a porous topography suggestive of the underlying dentin inorganic structure by way of vaporization of the collagen surface left after acid demineralization, and that these effects varied in degree with the laser exposure energy.

A dentifrice containing 5% potassium nitrate, 1.3% soluble pyrophosphate, 1.5% polyvinylmethyl ether and maleic acid (PVM/MA) copolymer and 0.243% sodium fluoride in a silica base (Sensitive/Tartar Control) has been developed to concomitantly control tartar, caries and dentinal hypersensitivity. In vitro and animal studies show that the fluoride in this product effectively inhibits formation of enamel and dentine caries. In vitro studies also demonstrate that this dentifrice effectively reduces hydraulic conductance by occluding dentine tubules with a mixed surface deposit of copolymer and silica. Using an in vitro model that simulates in vivo conditions, this dentifrice also allows a rapid penetration of potassium nitrate through the dentine matrix. These findings demonstrate a correlation under in vivo conditions between the occlusion of dentine and the ability to deliver topically applied agents to target sites within or below dentine. The results indicate that this new dentifrice should provide multiple clinical therapeutic benefits including controlling tooth decay and tartar formation, and reducing and preventing dentinal hypersensitivity.
