A 34-year-old baker presented with a 4-month history of hand dermatitis. Recently, she had noted spreading of the itchy dermatitis to the face, especially the perioral area, where erythema, oedema and scaling were present. Patch testing with the European standard series showed a positive reaction to formaldehyde. Further testing with fresh foods was negative. Preservative and emulsifier series were also tested and a positive reaction to oleyl alcohol 30 percent was found. A sun lotion used by the patient was also strongly positive. Stopping the use of this product rapidly improved her dermatitis. Enquiries of the manufacturer of the lotion revealed that it contained oleyl alcohol.

This article presents a case study of a 24-year-old chemical industry worker contracted with dermatitis of the forearms, upper arms and chest. Lesions were crythematous and had started 6 years previously in the same areas. A Contact allergy to epoxy resin systems can be due either to the resin itself or to other components such as reactive diluents or hardeners. Cresyl glycidyl ether is a reactive epoxy diluent and allergy to it is thus further confirmation of the origin of the dermatitis from epoxy resin systems

This article focuses on a case study regarding allergic contact dermatitis and condoms, which was conducted as of April 1996. A 44-year-old man presented with a 1-year history of erythematous desquamative lesions on the penis and Scrotum. Erythematous desquamative lesions were also found to be present in the periorbital region and on the frontal area of the hairline. The condoms used by the patient are made of natural latex and have retarding cream and silicone oil applied as lubricants. The authors say that the spread of lesions to the patients face was probably due to transfer by the hands.

Alopecia Areata (AA) is an organ-specific autoimmune disorder that targets anagen phase hair follicles. The course is unpredictable and current available treatments have variable efficacy. Nowadays, there is relatively little evidence on treatment of AA from well-designed clinical trials. Moreover, none of the treatments or devices commonly used to treat AA are specifically approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The Italian Study Group for Cutaneous Annexial Disease of the Italian Society of dermatology (SIDeMaST) proposes these Italian guidelines for diagnosis and treatment of Alopecia Areata deeming useful for the daily management of the disease. This article summarizes evidence-based treatment associated with expert-based recommendations.

A 3-year-old boy presented with a 4-day history of fever and diffuse itchy eruption, spreading from the face. His medical history was unremarkable, except for a recent diagnosis of adenoidal hypertrophy treated with oral betamethasone sodium phosphate for 10 days followed by budesonide nebuliser. Physical examination showed erythematous patches with mild scaling of the face and, on the forearms, hands and legs, fixed hive-like target lesions (figure 1), with …

Topical minoxidil, the only approved treatment for female pattern hair loss (FPHL), has been associated with scalp allergic contact dermatitis (ACD). We report the case of 2 female patients who developed ACD from minoxidil solution with severe telogen effluvium and psoriasiform scalp dermatitis. Scalp dermoscopy was useful to identify the psoriasiform vascular pattern, whereas patch testing made it possible to differentiate the cause of sensitization. In one case, minoxidil was the sole cause of scalp dermatitis, while in the other patient it was only the vehicle, thus permitting the patient to continue the treatment for FPHL.

Background: Household cleaning products often contain potential allergens and irritants but allergic contact dermatitis from these products in general consumers is rarely reported in the literature. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the presence of irritants and allergens as indicated on the labels or on the product information found on the website of household cleaning products marketed in Italy. Material/Methods: We examined the labels and the product information of 291 liquid household washing and cleaning products, including 43 washing-up liquids, 63 laundry detergents, 61 fabric conditioners, 47 spray detergents, and 77 hard surface cleaning products. We obtained the data from the product information found on the websites for 263 products and directly on the product packages for 28 products. For each product we specifically recorded the presence of surfactants, preservatives, and fragrances listed in Annex III of Directive 76/768/EEC. Results: The websites of two Italian brands do not respect EU regulations as they provide product information only with bar codes of the products. Preservatives and fragrances are the main allergens declared in the label of household cleaning products with methylchloroisothiazolinone/methylisothiazolinone (MCI/MI) listed in 35.7% and limonene in 43.6% of the products. Surfactants were listed in 16.5% of the studied products. Conclusions: Our study shows that household cleaning products in Italian market contain several allergens, particularly preservatives and fragrances. For consumers, at least in Italy, it may not be easy to retrieve product information from the website for two widely sold brands. The information had to be taken from the actual package. © 2009 John Wiley & Sons A/S.

Objective To evaluate the efficacy of oral finasteride therapy associated with an oral contraceptive containing drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol in premenopausal women with female pattern hair loss. Setting Outpatient consultation for hair disorders at the Department of Dermatology, University of Bologna. Patients and Intervention Thirty-seven women with female pattern hair loss were treated with oral finasteride, 2.5 mg/d, while taking an oral contraceptive containing drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol. Treatment efficacy was evaluated using global photography and the hair density score from videodermoscopy. A self-administered questionnaire was used to assess patient evaluation of treatment effectiveness. Results At 12-month follow-up, 23 of the 37 patients were rated as improved using global photography (12 were slightly improved, 8 were moderately improved, and 3 were greatly improved). No improvement was recorded in 13 patients. One patient experienced worsening of the condition. There was a statistically significant ( P = .002) increase in the hair density score in 12 patients. No adverse reactions to the drug were reported. Conclusions Sixty-two percent of the patients demonstrated some improvement of their hair loss with the use of finasteride, 2.5 mg/d, while taking the oral contraceptive. It is unclear whether the success was due to a higher dosage of finasteride (2.5 mg instead of 1 mg) or to its association with the oral contraceptive containing drospirenone, which has an antiandrogenic effect. Further studies are necessary to understand which patterns of female pattern hair loss respond better to this treatment.

Systemic chemotherapy is a well known cause of reversible hair loss. Busulfan chemotherapy, however, is responsible for a permanent alopecia that usually occurs in bone marrow transplant patients. We report two patients with permanent alopecia due to busulfan chemotherapy. Both patients had a diffuse alopecia characterized by greatly reduced hair density with short, thin hair. The pathology showed reduced follicular density in the absence of fibrosis, suggesting that alopecia may result either from hair follicle stem cell destruction or from acute damage to the keratinocytes of the lower portion of some follicles.
