A recent rise in the relative abundance of Discostella species (D. stelligera and D. pseudostelligera) has been well documented from sedimentary diatom assemblages across the Northern Hemisphere. This unprecedented change over the last ~150 years has been linked to rises in atmospheric temperatures, changes in ice cover, and/or increases in thermal stability, among other factors. The bi-weekly monitoring data from two boreal lakes at the Experimental Lakes Area (ELA) in northwestern Ontario were analyzed across seasons (spring, summer, and fall) and decades (1970s-2000s). We found that Discostella species are primarily spring/early summer bloomers (i.e., late April to June) in these lakes and changes in concentrations of Discostella over time were most pronounced in the spring or early summer months. Increases in Discostella abundance over time may be linked to earlier ice-off and a longer period of spring turnover, resulting from increased winter and spring temperatures. It is also possible that a trophic mismatch between the spring diatom bloom and zooplankton is occurring, thus reducing diatom loss rates, and resulting in greater overall abundance. Moreover, the spring dominance of Discostella in our study lakes occurred at a time of the year when nutrient concentrations were at their highest seasonally, suggesting that these taxa are neither limited directly by nutrients, nor responding to enhanced stratification during the summer months in these lakes., (© 2016 Phycological Society of America.)

Lakes in the semiarid Southern Interior Plateau of British Columbia, Canada are vulnerable to future climate-driven changes in water quantity and quality. However, few long-term monitoring records exist to assess the effects of varying hydroclimate conditions on lake function. We present a high-resolution multiproxy paleolimnological record containing subfossil diatoms, μXRF via ITRAX, and chlorophyll-a that spans the past 1800 years from Roche Lake in south-central British Columbia. Generalized additive models indicate that the diatom assemblages were associated with changes in lake level and the accompanying effects of atmospheric forcing on lake thermal structure, and that these forcing mechanisms had a weak relationship with primary production. We infer two pronounced arid periods between ca. AD 600-950 and ca. AD 1730-1950 that correspond to evidence of reduced lake mixing and enhanced anoxia, but variable patterns in primary production. Synthesis of regional proxy records suggests that inferences of moist but possibly warm conditions during the Medieval Climate Anomaly may have occurred because of a complex interaction between prolonged La Niña-like conditions and higher radiative forcing. Overall, lakes in this region are sensitive to changes in hydroclimate generated by interactions between external forcing and Pacific Ocean-atmosphere processes, and the resulting changes in aridity may have potentially negative consequences on salmonid habitat. Pollen and diatom assemblages from well-dated sediment cores from three lakes forming a west-to-east transect across the boreal forest in northwest Ontario (Canada) were used to evaluate the timing and nature of the movement of the prairie-forest ecotone (PFE) across the Holocene. Changes in vegetation, temperature, and effective moisture were inferred from pollen and pollen-based transfer functions. Analyses indicated site-specific vegetational and climate changes across short spatial distances, with prolonged prairie-like conditions during the middle Holocene at the westernmost site. Increased reconstructed temperatures at this westernmost site occurred from ∼9000 to 3000 cal yr BP, alongside increases in diatom-inferred lake levels beginning at ∼6000 cal yr BP. The abundance of Quercus peaked concurrently with rising lake levels before declining to trace levels by ∼3000 cal yr BP. Increases in the abundance of non-arboreal pollen between ∼8500 and ∼4500 cal yr BP at the more eastern lakes suggest relatively delayed and truncated PFE influence, before the reestablishment of primarily boreal taxa by ∼4500 cal yr BP, coincident with diatom-inferred increases in lake levels. This study shows that the PFE moved both farther east and north than previously determined, but generally agrees with established patterns in vegetation from other studied regions along the PFE. Phytobenthos are often underrepresented in both limnological and paleolimnological studies but may play key roles in whole‐lake production and ecosystem processes including eutrophication, food‐web dynamics, and ecosystem state changes.Photosynthetic pigments, stables isotopes, and diatoms were quantified from surface sediments (0–1 cm) collected across a depth transect of a small, DOC‐rich, mesotrophic lake in boreal northwestern Ontario to assess spatial variation in phytobenthos abundance and production.Maximal concentrations of siliceous algae and cyanobacteria pigments occurred at ~2–6 m depth, with abundant tychoplanktonic diatoms, depleted sedimentary δ13C values, and elevated ratios of precursor chlorophyll a to product pheophytin a, all aligning well with the depths of the thermocline, epilimnetic mixing, and maximum light penetration.These patterns demonstrated the presence of three discrete community assemblages, with greatest mass accumulation occurring at intermediate depths where warm illuminated sediments provide habitat for tychoplanktonic diatoms and cyanobacteria between turbulent shallows and cold and dark depths.If widespread among boreal lakes, this tychoplanktonic zone may exert important effects on whole‐lake production, carbon sequestration, benthic‐pelagic food‐web coupling, eutrophication, and ecosystem state change. Descriptions of regional climate expression require data from multiple lakes, yet little is known of how variation in records within morphometrically complex lakes may affect interpretations. In northeast Ontario (Canada), this issue was addressed using records of pollen, pigments, and diatoms in three sediment cores from two small boreal lakes spanning the last ~6000 years. Pollen analysis suggested warm conditions between ~6000 and ~4000 cal yr BP, coherent with previous assessments from boreal eastern Ontario and western Quebec. Analysis of phototrophic communities from fossil pigments and diatom valves suggested relatively eutrophic conditions with lower lake-levels during this interval. Generalized additive model trends identified significant regional changes in pollen assemblages and declines in pigment concentrations after ~4000 cal yr BP consistent with cooler and wetter climate conditions that resulted in regional lake oligotrophication and increased lake levels during the late-Holocene. Despite contemporaneous changes in pollen and pigment biomarkers across lakes, cores collected from adjacent basins of the same lake (Green Lake) did not show similar trends in fossil pigments likely reflecting preferential deposition of clay-rich allochthonous material in the deeper central basin and suggesting that regional signals in climate may be complicated by lake- or basin-specific catchment processes. Historical changes in Holocene climate in northeastern Ontario were quantified using analyses of sedimentary pollen, diatoms, and pigments in a small boreal lake. Modern analog reconstructions of average temperature from Holocene pollen assemblages of Charland Lake showed temperature was ~2°C warmer than present conditions ~7800–4500 cal. yr BP, a time period consistent with the Holocene thermal maximum (HTM). Pollen data suggest a two-phase HTM: warm and dry conditions based on the presence of primarily Pinus spp., followed by warm and wet conditions based on increases in cedar. Overall, algal production was low during the HTM, as reflected by low concentrations of pigments and diatoms. In the late HTM, increases in cedar pollen and planktonic diatoms suggest sustained increases in water levels for the remainder of the Holocene. During the Post-HTM Period (~4500–2000 cal. yr BP), a period that was warmer than today but cooler than the HTM, overall pigment production was significantly higher than all other periods. However, changes in diatom species composition suggest this period was not uniform, with variation occurring between diatoms indicative of higher and lower nutrient levels. The last ~2000 cal. yr BP was less productive than the Post-HTM Period but more productive than the HTM with higher production from diatoms and cyanobacteria. This study suggests that the relationship between climate and lake water production can be quite complex, and that changes in temperature, precipitation, light, lake levels, and mixing patterns are among factors that are related to changes in subfossil phototroph assemblages. The pH of precipitation in the northeastern United States has risen as industrial sulfur and nitrogen oxide emissions have declined following amendment of the Clean Air Act in 1990, but the effects of this change on the region's lakes are not yet fully documented. Here we use the siliceous remains of diatoms and chrysophyte algae in a sediment core from Bear Pond (Adirondack State Park, NY), which acidified during the 20th century, to reconstruct pH variability during the last 2 centuries, evaluate the extent to which the lake has recovered from acidification, and determine the timing of that reversal to help identify its causes. Inferred pH declined erratically from a high of 6.4 during the 1860s to 5.7–5.9 during the 1930s, then decreased to the 4.9–5.4 range by 1995–2010. After 2010, inferred pH rose and remained within the 5.4–5.6 range following an abrupt rise in the pH of regional precipitation. Although the acidification trend at Bear Pond has now reversed, the lake ecosystem has not returned to its pre-impact condition. Distinctive members of the pre-acidification diatom community are still absent, chrysophytes have become unusually abundant, and water clarity (Secchi depth) has decreased by about half. Furthermore, the original fish community was lost due to stocking and piscicide treatment in 1958, and high concentrations of toxaphene residues from the piscicide are present in the sediments. Recent surface-water surveys suggest that high nutrient concentrations and nuisance algae remain issues in the St. Lawrence River Area of Concern (AOC) at Cornwall, Ontario, specifically in the tributaries and nearshore zones of Lake St. Francis (LSF). In particular, it is unclear whether management actions designed to reduce nutrient inputs, first implemented in the 1990s as part of the Remedial Action Plan for the AOC, have reduced algal production or influenced assemblage composition. To address this issue, a paleolimnological approach was used to provide a historical context for the present-day nutrient concentrations and to quantify the extent of change in water quality in LSF since the early 1990s. A sediment core was collected near the north shore of LSF and was examined for changes in the concentrations and compositions of fossil diatoms and pigments, as well as stable isotope (δ 15 N and δ 13 C) values. Analyses of diatom and pigment concentrations indicated that overall algal abundance has risen in the last few decades, including trends of increasing occurrences of potentially toxic cyanobacteria, despite ongoing remediation efforts. Temporal patterns of stable isotope signatures in the core suggest a steady increase in nutrient influx since the mid-20th century, with the post-1990 increase in algal production likely attributable to recent inputs associated with land-use changes in local contributing watersheds. As the industrial footprint of the Athabasca Oil Sands Region (AOSR) continues to expand, concern about the potential impacts of pollutants on the surrounding terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems need to be assessed. An emerging issue is whether recent increases in lake production downwind of the development can be linked to AOSR activities, and/or whether changing climatic conditions are influencing lake nutrient status. To decipher the importance of pollutants, particularly atmospheric deposition of reactive nitrogen (Nr), and the effects of climate change as potential sources of increasing lake production, lakes from both within and outside of the nitrogen deposition zone were analyzed for historical changes in diatom assemblages. Lake sediment cores were collected from a priori defined nitrogen (N) - and phosphorus (P) - limited lakes within and outside the N plume associated with the AOSR. Diatom assemblages were quantified at sub-decadal resolution since ca. 1890 to compare conditions prior to oil sands expansion and regional climate warming, to the more recent conditions in each group of lakes (Reference and Impacted, N- and P-limited lakes). Analyses of changes in assemblage similarity and species turnover indicates that changes in diatom assemblages were minimal both within and across all lake groups. Small changes in percent composition of planktonic taxa, particularly small centric taxa (Discostella and Cyclotella species) and pennate taxa, such as Asterionella formosa and Fragilaria crotonensis, occurred in some of the lakes. While these changes were consistent with potential climate effects on algal growth, water column stability and other factors; the timing and direction of biotic changes were variable among sites suggesting that any apparent response to climate was lake dependent. The absence of a consistent pattern of diatom changes associated with receipt of reactive nitrogen or intrinsic nutrient-limitation status of the lake suggest that downwind AOSR emissions had no demonstrable effect on diatom composition. A high-resolution diatom record from Wolf Lake, a minimally disturbed 'heritage' lake, provides insights into the hydroclimatic history of the Adirondack Mountains of northern New York during the last c. 1600 years. Three pronounced dry periods occurred during c. AD 490-610, 780-870, and 1010-1080, and low precipitation generally prevailed during the warm Medieval Climate Anomaly (c. AD 950-1350), a finding that fills an important gap in knowledge of the spatial extent of droughts across North America during that period. During the cooler 'Little Ice Age' interval (c. AD 1350-1800), inferred water balance was generally more positive. Seven peaks in charcoal abundance represent fire events during both wet and dry periods. Unusually high charcoal and inorganic sediment deposition c. AD 1700 could reflect human activity in the watershed, as might an abrupt rise in the relative abundances of planktonic and tychoplanktonic diatoms in Wolf Lake during the AD 1860s. The diatom record displays periodicities of c. 256 and 512 years in addition to high-frequency fluctuations, suggesting that significant precipitation variability is likely to continue to disrupt climatic trends in this region. Boreal regions and their freshwater ecosystems may be susceptible to future climate change under projected warmer conditions. Northwest Ontario is a boreal region adjacent to the climatically sensitive prairie-forest ecotone (PFE). Pollen records spanning the Holocene from near the Manitoba/Ontario border to lakes up to ~300 km east of the PFE indicate a warmer and possibly wetter mid-Holocene period across northwest Ontario from ~8000 to 4500 cal. yr BP. To date, only one Holocene-scale record of changes in effective moisture, as indicated through diatom-inferred changes in lake level (Experimental Lakes Area (ELA) Lake 239), is available from this region. Our study expands the regional context of Holocene climate changes, with the analysis of diatom assemblages in sediment cores from two additional lakes, which span a distance of over 200 km across the present-day boreal forest, from 80 km west of ELA Lake 239 to ~150 km to the northeast. In cores from both lakes, benthic taxa predominate in the early-to-mid-Holocene period, with a low abundance of planktonic taxa, suggesting lower lake levels by ~2–5 m. Increases in the abundance of planktonic taxa to >50% occurred in both lakes beginning ~4500–4000 cal. yr BP suggesting positive water balance over the last 4000 years in comparison with the mid-Holocene period. This new evidence supports a regional mid-Holocene period of aridity, with reduced water levels across the boreal region of northwest Ontario. If future climate change results in lower effective moisture, then conditions could become similar to the mid-Holocene period aridity, leading to real challenges for the management of water resources across the region. Predictive models relating ecological assemblages to environmental conditions are widely used in environmental impact assessment and biomonitoring. Such models are often parameterized using comprehensive ecological sampling and taxonomic identification efforts., Limited resources mean that expensive sampling and analytical procedures should be planned to maximize information gain and minimize unnecessary expense. However, there has been little consideration of cost-effectiveness in parameterizing predictive models using ecological assemblages and no explicit consideration of cost-effectiveness in balancing investment in the crucial aspects of sample size and taxonomic resolution., Using lacustrine diatom (Bacillariophyceae) assemblages from four large-scale ( c. 77 000-1·3 million km2) data sets containing between 207 and 493 lakes, we address the following questions: (1) how does taxonomic resolution affect information content; (2) how does sample size affect information content for different taxonomic resolutions; and (3) what are the most cost-effective strategies for constructing environmental assessment models using diatom assemblages across a range of budgets? We use weighted averaging regression models for p H, phosphorus, salinity and lake depth and realistic data collection costs to examine the relationship between cost and model information content ( R2 and root mean squared error of prediction)., For diatom-based models, finer taxonomic resolutions almost always provide more cost-effective information content than collecting more samples, with (morpho)species being the most appropriate taxonomic resolution for nearly all budget scenarios. Information content exhibits an asymptotic relationship with sample size and budget, with greatest information gain during initial sample size increases, and little gain beyond c. 100 samples. Smaller sample sizes can also achieve surprising predictive power in some cases, suggesting low-cost regional models may be achievable. However, caution is necessary in such an approach, because spatial dependencies in predictions may be missed and analogues with predicted assemblages may be poor., Synthesis and applications. We demonstrate the utility of explicitly considering cost estimates to determine optimal sampling effort and taxonomic resolution for ecological assemblage models. For large, regional biomonitoring programmes, cost-effective sampling could save millions of dollars. Our framework for determining optimal trade-offs in ecological assemblage models is easily adaptable to other taxa and analytical techniques used in biomonitoring and environmental assessment. Abstract: We investigated the modern distribution of fossil midges within a dimictic lake and explored downcore patterns of inferred lake depths over the last 2000years from previously published proxies. Modern midge distribution within Gall Lake showed a consistent and predictable pattern related to the lake-depth gradient with recognizable assemblages characteristic of shallow-water, mid-depth and profundal environments. Interpretations of downcore changes in midge assemblages, in conjunction with quantitative lake-depth inferences across a priori defined (based on diatom data) ~500-yr wet and dry periods, demonstrated that both invertebrate and algal assemblages exhibited similar timing and nature of ecological responses. Midges were quantified by their relative abundance, concentrations and an index of Chaoborus to chironomids, and all showed the greatest differences between the wet and dry periods. During the low lake-level period of the Medieval Climate Anomaly (MCA: AD 900 to 1400), profundal chironomids declined, shallow-water and mid-depth chironomids increased, chironomid-inferred lake level declined and the Chaoborus-to-chironomid index decreased. Many lakes within the Boreal Plain and Grassland regions of Canada are currently eutrophic to hypereutrophic. Limited paleolimnological work has been conducted to define water quality trajectories of lakes within this region. A 25-year intermittent monitoring and a ∼150-year paleolimnological time series from Baptiste Lake, Alberta, were analyzed using a combination of trend, correlation, and multivariate analyses. The temporal overlap between the monitoring and paleolimnological time series provides an opportunity to assess coherence between the data sources. Diatom assemblages in the sediment core show that eutrophic conditions were present for at least 150 years. Monitored water chemistry data since the early 1980s show that total Kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN) has increased by approximately 50% since the early 1990s, whereas concentrations of total phosphorus (TP) have remained stable. Further, measured TKN is significantly correlated to measurements of chlorophyllaover the monitoring period and to diatom-inferred TKN values, suggesting nitrogen limitation in Baptiste Lake. In contrast, measured TP was not correlated to chlorophyllaor diatom-inferred TP. Changes in land use over the past 100 years is the most parsimonious explanation for the nutrient changes. No statistical support for climatic change as a linear predictor of nutrient dynamics was found. Our contemporary and paleolimnological analysis provides an important perspective on the timing and magnitude of nutrient dynamics over ∼150 years. Future government and community decisions on Baptiste Lake management would benefit from testing nutrient limitation and detailed modeling of nutrient runoff from the watershed. The Winnipeg River Drainage Basin (WRDB), within the boreal forest region of northwest Ontario, is a region that is expected to be negatively affected by climate warming. Inferences of droughts over the past two millennia from Little Raleigh Lake were based on two nearshore sediment cores. The core locations were from depths of ~12 and 15 m and were based on sufficient nearshore sediment accumulation and distance from the modern benthic-to-planktonic diatom boundary, where a distinct shift from dominance of benthic taxa changed to dominance of planktonic taxa in surficial sediments at ~11.8 m. Diatom-inferred depth was based on a model developed from 60 surficial sediments within the study lake. Depth inferences indicate that prolonged periods of aridity occurred from ~ad 950 to 1300 (corresponds to ‘Medieval Climate Anomaly’) and from ~ad 1625 to 1750 (aridity during ‘Little Ice Age’). We found that the core collected from a depth closer to the benthic-to-planktonic diatom boundary was more sensitive to changes in lake level than the deeper core where planktonic diatoms dominated the assemblage. The inferred low-water stands of the past two millennia are well outside of the range of the past ~100 years, suggesting that recent drought history may not be a good estimate of future extremes. Multi-decadal to centennial-scale shifts in effective moisture over the past two millennia are inferred from sedimentary records from six lakes spanning a ~250 km region in northwest Ontario. This is the first regional application of a technique developed to reconstruct drought from drainage lakes (open lakes with surface outlets). This regional network of proxy drought records is based on individual within-lake calibration models developed using diatom assemblages collected from surface sediments across a water-depth gradient. Analysis of diatom assemblages from sediment cores collected close to the near-shore ecological boundary between benthic and planktonic diatom taxa indicated this boundary shifted over time in all lakes. These shifts are largely dependent on climate-driven influences, and can provide a sensitive record of past drought. Our lake-sediment records indicate two periods of synchronous signals, suggesting a common large-scale climate forcing. The first is a period of prolonged aridity during the Medieval Climate Anomaly ( MCA, c. 900-1400 CE). Documentation of aridity across this region expands the known spatial extent of the MCA megadrought into a region that historically has not experienced extreme droughts such as those in central and western north America. The second synchronous period is the recent signal of the past ~100 years, which indicates a change to higher effective moisture that may be related to anthropogenic forcing on climate. This approach has the potential to fill regional gaps, where many previous paleo-lake depth methods (based on deeper centrally located cores) were relatively insensitive. By filling regional gaps, a better understanding of past spatial patterns in drought can be used to assess the sensitivity and realism of climate model projections of future climate change. 1. Until recently, the distribution of diatom species assemblages and their attributes (e.g. species richness and evenness) in relation to water depth have been identified but not quantified, especially across several lakes in a region. Here, we examined diatom assemblages in the surface sediment across a water-depth gradient in eight small, boreal lakes in north-western Ontario, minimally disturbed by human activities. 2. Surface-sediment diatom assemblages were collected within each lake along a gentle slope from near-shore to the centre deep basin of the lake, at a resolution of ∼1 m water depth. Analysis of sedimentary samples provided an integrated view of assemblages that were living in the lake over several years and enabled a high-resolution analysis of many lakes. The study lakes ranged in water chemistry, morphology and size and are located along an east-west transect approximately 250 km long in north-western Ontario (Canada). 3. The majority of diatom species were distributed along a continuum of depth, with those taxa having similar habitat requirements forming distinct, though overlapping, assemblages. Three major zones of diatom assemblages in each lake were consistently identified: (i) a near-shore assemblage of Achnanthes ( sensu lato), Nitzschia, Cymbella ( sensu lato) and other benthic species; (ii) a mid-depth assemblage of small Fragilaria ( sensu lato) /small Aulacoseira and various Navicula taxa; and (iii) a deep-water assemblage of planktonic origin (mainly Discotella spp.). 4. The depth of the transition between assemblage zones varied between the eight lakes. The boundary between the deep-water planktonic zone and the mid-depth benthic zone varied according to water chemistry and was probably related to light attenuation. The boundary was deeper in lakes with the lower dissolved organic carbon and total phosphorus (TP) (i.e. less light attenuation) and vice versa. 5. Generally, species richness, species evenness and turnover rate of species as a function of depth were significantly lower in the planktonic assemblage zone in comparison with the two zones nearer the shore. Reproducibility of species and assemblage distributions across the depth gradient of the lakes illustrated that, despite potential for sediment transport, detailed ecological characterisation of diatom species can be gleaned from sedimentary data. Predictions of the extent of forest fires under warmer and drier conditions in boreal regions require knowledge of long-term relationships between fire and climate. However, many long-term studies that utilize the remains of total charcoal in lacustrine sediments fail to demonstrate a relationship between climate change and fire activity. A new approach to reconstruct the relative-area burned based on specific types of charcoal particles (the charcoal-morphotype (CM) fire index) has shown significant correlations to recorded forest fires. Here we assess the utility of the CM derived from an analysis of charcoal morphotypes in sediment cores from Opatcho Lake (British Columbia, Canada) using two independent paleoclimate proxies over the last 400 years, and since the mid Holocene. Over the past 400 years, significant correlations between the CM fire index and independent climate reconstructions (diatom-inferred salinity, dendroclimatic reconstructions of temperature and precipitation, and reconstructions of the Pacific Decadal Oscillation) range from 0.35 to 0.42. Similarly, since the mid Holocene the correlation between the CM fire index and independent proxies of past climate (diatom-inferred salinity and temperature inferences from chironomids from the southern interior of British Columbia) range from 0.70 to 0.76. These significant correlations strongly contrast with the very low and insignificant correlations between the CM fire index and total charcoal, suggesting that this approach provides paleofire information not available from traditional techniques. The CM fire index suggests that fires were at least two- and five-fold larger than those observed during the instrumental period, over the last 400 and 6000 years, respectively. A high-resolution, independent pollen-inferred paleoclimate record and direct algal seasonality data from the actual time of sediment deposition are used to interpret the high-resolution diatom and chrysophyte record of varved Lake Mina, west-central Minnesota, USA during AD 1116-2002. This direct algal seasonality information was obtained by splitting varves into constituent winter-spring and summer lamina, and separately analyzing the siliceous algae in each layer. Analyses of integrated, continuous four-year diatom and chrysophyte samples from a sedimentary sequence show that the time period AD 1116-1478 (ie, the Atlantic-centered 'Medieval Climate Anomaly' (MCA)) was characterized by periods of vigorous and prolonged spring mixing, suggesting that ice-out occurred early. However, the warm summer temperatures in the MCA, particularly in a massive drought spanning AD 1300-1400, frequently caused the lake to stratify strongly, leading to nutrient depletion. During AD 1478-1870 (ie, the Atlantic-centered 'Little IceAge' (LIA)), Lake Mina was characterized by weak spring circulation and increasing nutrient depletion, suggesting late ice-out conditions. Strong summer stratification and/or nutrient depletion in both time periods is shown by the occurrence of the nutrient-poor oligotrophic taxon Cyclotella pseudostelligera. The diatom and chrysophyte assemblages of the period of Euro- American settlement AD 1870-2002 show higher nutrient availability and increased spring mixing intensity, as a result of forest clearance and increasingly earlier ice-out (documented in regional historical records). A palaeolimnological investigation of changes in water quantity and quality in Lake 239, Experimental Lakes Area, in northwestern Ontario indicates marked changes in limnological conditions during the Holocene. Water quantity changes are based on the analysis of diatoms and inferences of lake-level changes from a nearshore sediment core. Changes in water quality are based on the analysis of diatom assemblages and associated quantitative inferences of total phosphorus (TP) from a deep central core, as well as changes in diatom accumulation rates, the proportion of chrysophyte scales to diatoms and changes to organic matter content. Lake levels at least 8 m lower than today were inferred from the nearshore core and were concurrent with an increase in nutrient-rich diatom assemblages, an increase in diatom accumulation and a decrease in the chrysophytes relative to diatoms in the central core. Fragilaria crotonensis and Aulacoseira subarctica were two of the dominant nutrient-rich taxa that contributed to an increase in diatom-inferred TP during the mid Holocene. Results from this study provide strong empirical evidence that water levels much lower than today can dramatically change trophic status, as occurred during the dry mid Holocene, and may provide a good analogue for understanding future impacts of climatic changes due to anthropogenic activities. The article focuses on the study which tracks anthropogenic- and climatic-related environmental changes in the habitat lakes of the endangered Atlantic whitefish through palaeolimnological techniques. The study examines the three lakes near Bridgewater, Nova Scotia using palaelimnological techniques to infer their historic limnological conditions and compare the results with pre-industrial conditions. The results of the study reveal that acidic deposition has no important impact on the lakes, and their nutrient statuses have never changed. It notes that the lakes are not yet been affected by acidic precipitation. However, it considers climatic warning and associated limnological changes as potential stressors to the habitats.

Paleolimnological approaches using sedimentary diatom assemblages were used to assess water quality changes over the last approximately 200 years in three lakes from King's County, Nova Scotia. In particular, the role of recent shoreline development in accelerating eutrophication in these systems was assessed. Sediment cores collected from each lake were analyzed for their diatom assemblages at approximately 5-year intervals, as determined by 210Pb dating. Analyses showed that each system has changed, but tracked different ecosystem changes. Tupper and George lakes recorded shifts, which are likely primarily related to climatic warming, with diatom assemblages changing from a preindustrial dominance by Aulacoseira spp. to present-day dominance by Cyclotella stelligera. In addition to the recent climatic-related changes, further diatom changes in the Tupper Lake core between approximately 1820 and 1970 were coincident with watershed disturbances (farming, forestry, and construction of hydroelectric power infrastructure). Black River Lake has recorded an increase in diatom-inferred total phosphorus since about 1950, likely due to impoundment of the Black River system for hydroelectric generation and subsequent changes in land runoff. Before-and-after (i.e., top-bottom) sediment analyses of six other lakes from King's County provided further evidence that the region is being influenced by climatic change (decreases in Aulacoseira spp., increases in planktonic diatom taxa), as well as showing other environmental stressors (e.g., acidification). However, we recorded no marked increase in diatom-inferred nutrient levels coincident with shoreline cottage development in any of the nine study lakes. Paleolimnological studies such as these allow lake managers to place the current limnological conditions into a long-term context, and thereby provide important background data for effective lake management.
