Abstract

Harvesting energy from natural resources is of significant interest because of their abundance and sustainability. In particular, large-scale marine energy storage shows promising prospects because of the massive and diverse energy forms such as waves, tide and currents; however it is greatly hindered due to its complicated circumstances and intermittent nature. Storing and transporting locally generated energy has become a vital step for future sustainable energy supplies. Here, we proposed a highly-extensible “paper-like” all-in-one seawater supercapacitor constructed from a nanofiber-based film in operando towards electrochemical energy storage in the marine environment, which features lightweight and excellent mechanical properties with a typical thickness of about 100 μm. The single supercapacitor cell shows a remarkable performance with an energy density of 6.6 mW h cm−3 at a power density of 99.0 mW cm−3, and exhibits a capacitance retention of 100% under different bending operations. Moreover, the large-scale extensibility of the all-in-one seawater supercapacitor cell was fully demonstrated with an optimized circuit design. The integrated device connected with multiple cells in series and parallel can successfully drive a motor with a voltage of 12 V and a power of 2.5 W for operation. It shows prospective applications for future large-scale distributed energy storage systems in the marine environment.

Abstract

Despite tangible benefits that integration of DG units brings to electrical grids, their notable impacts on protection systems of power networks raise many challenges and concerns on how a fault should be detected and isolated in active distribution networks. Many attempts have been made to investigate the downside of the interconnection of DG units and methods to mitigate their impacts have been proposed. This study reviews the impact of DG integration on protection systems addressed in other research works and recapitulates suggested methods provided by scholars.

Abstract

In this paper we describe a decentralized protocol that is applied for scheduling and management of energy sharing in heterogeneous systems. Particular system we have in mind comprises of agents with different mobility, energy harvesting and energy sharing capabilities herein called aPads, aFish and aMussels. aPads are surface vehicles that harvest energy and are able to transmit it to both aFishes and aMussels. aFish are underwater vehicles that can transmit energy to aMussels or to other aFish, and receive energy from aPads. aMussels, that can either be attached to the sea-ground or float on the surface, can only receive energy, either from aFish or aPads. For such a system to be able to function for an extended period of time, a decentralized energy management protocol should be designed, whose purpose is to schedule and coordinate charging of agents over time. These decisions depend on the current battery levels of different agents, as well as their positions, and should be done in a decentralized manner. In this paper we apply an energy sharing protocol based on TAEMS framework, originally applied to planning and coordination in aerial-ground robotics systems for search and rescue missions. We refine the obtained plans using the coalition-based metaheuristic for vehicle routing problems. We show execution schedules achieved using the proposed protocol and highlight its advantages and flaws when applied to our underwater scenario.

Abstract

The integration of distributed Energy Resources (DER) is challenging electrical network quality which is the main vital and ubiquitous all over the world. Coordination and energy management of microgrids in grid connected and in islanded mode is one of solutions of distribution power quality with best reliability, and stability to ensure power system resilience. In this review, the coordination and energy management of microgrids broad based on PQ controller and droop control some useful information is given in details and analyzed. Additionally, possible structures, options and control methods of DER units are presented which is followed by the descriptions of system controls and energy management strategies. Eventually, future trends of microgrids are discuss, point out how this concept can be a key to select a best method of coordination and managing microgrids for future researchers in order to tackle some challenges based on power quality.

Establishing interconnection to the grid is a recognized barrier to the deployment of distributed energy generation. This report compares interconnection processes for photovoltaic projects in California and Germany. This report summarizes the steps of the interconnection process for developers and utilities, the average length of time utilities take to process applications, and paperwork required of project developers. Based on a review of the available literature, this report finds that while the interconnection procedures and timelines are similar in California and Germany, differences in the legal and regulatory frameworks are substantial.

Abstract

In this work, a new framework for control of power flow of an energy storage is proposed. As part of the framework, an advanced controller for manipulating the power flow of an energy storage system, a photovoltaic (PV) source, and the utility grid is developed. The new controller relies on the Model-based Predictive Control (MPC) concept. The proposed controller realizes an optimal control scheme that maximizes the local self-consumption of renewable energy source. At the same time, the energy consumption supplied by the electric grid is minimized subject to its price posted in the grid. The presented approach is evaluated through computer-aided simulations using data available from a real installation in Switzerland. The data consists of photovoltaic panels, industrial building as a load as well as a battery energy storage system (BESS).

Electrical distribution networks worldwide are facing frequent capacity challenges due to the widespread roll out of various distributed energy resources (DERs). A number of demand response (DR) mechanisms have been developed in order to circumvent the problems and enhance the flexibility of the distribution network. While the existing centralized control system remains its crucial role for reliable and secure grid operation, distributed intelligence is a complement technology with a focus on dividing the control task into a number of simpler problems and solve them with minimum exchange of information. Based on the recent developments of distributed intelligence, this paper discusses a decentralized approach to enable demand response for managing the congestions more efficiently. The approach is validated with simulations for representative Dutch low-voltage (LV) networks.

Abstract

After the integration of large-scale Distributed Generation (DG) into the distribution network, the randomness and volatility of its output result in a reduction of spatiotemporal alignment between power generation and demand in the distribution network, exacerbating the phenomenon of wind and solar power wastage. As a novel power system model, the fundamental concept of Regional Autonomous Power Grids (RAPGs) is to achieve localized management and energy autonomy, thereby facilitating the effective consumption of DGs. Therefore, this paper proposes a distributed resource planning strategy that enhances the autonomy capabilities of regional power grids by considering multiple evaluation indexes for autonomy. First, a regional Energy Storage (ES) configuration strategy is proposed. This strategy can select a suitable reference value for the upper limit of ES configuration based on the regional load and DG output to maximize the elimination of source load deviations in the region as the upper limit constraint of ES capacity. Then, a control strategy for regional ES is proposed, the charging and discharging reference line of ES is set, and multiple autonomy and economic indexes are used as objective functions to select different proportions of ES to control the distributed resources of the regional power grid and establish evaluation indexes of the internal regional generation and load power ratio, the proportion of power supply matching hours, new energy consumption rate and tie line power imbalance outside the region to evaluate changes in the regional autonomy capabilities. The final simulation results show that in the real regional grid example, the planning method in the planning year in the region of the overall power supply matching hour ratio and new energy consumption rate increased by 3.9% and 4.8% on average, and the power imbalance of the tie line decreased by 7.8% on average. The proposed planning approach enables the maximization of regional autonomy while effectively smoothing the fluctuation of power exchange between the regional grid and the higher-level grid. This presents a rational and effective planning solution for the regional grid, facilitating the coordinated development between the region and the distribution network. Abstract

A high proportion of distributed generators (DGs) connected to the distribution network causes a significant change in the normal and fault currents of the system as well as in the linearization of the characteristics. It is difficult to adapt to conventional protection. This paper theoretically analyzes the possible impact of fault current characteristics on traditional protection based on single-ended informativeness after connecting to DGs. From the perspective of protection action, the evaluation index system of DG protection is established by considering the maximum short-circuit current output from DG. Combined with the relay protection requirements, the calculation method of evaluation indexes is given concerning the protection characteristics and expert experience. An analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and a CRITIC combination assignment method based on the principle of minimum information identification are proposed. The scores of different types of protection before and after DG access are calculated using the proposed methodology employing a typical distribution network example. The proposed method can quantitatively obtain the distribution network protection adaptability boundary. In the actual calculation example selected in this paper, a DG can reasonably improve the adaptability of the three-stage current protection when it increases the current amplitude at a penetration rate of 50%; the DG needs to adjust the three-stage current protection rectification value when it decreases the current amplitude at a penetration rate of 20%; and adaptive overcurrent protection and inverse time limit current protection need to be adjusted when the penetration rate of DG is 50%. Compared with the traditional protection evaluation method, the method adopted in this paper can intuitively derive the weak link between protection handling faults after DG access as well as the appropriate capacity of DG to improve protection performance. Abstract

This chapter highlights how the growth of distributed power generation in the EU influences the corporate strategies of major European power utilities. Driven to a large extent by renewable support policies, the proportion of distributed power generation has increased in the EU. This has happened to the detriment of the share of electricity supplied by power utilities, which are not only selling less electricity but also facing lower prices for electricity sold, as a result of the changing market conditions. The uptake of distributed renewables adds to the already troublesome outlook for traditional utilities, further eroding their profitability. In response, these firms engage in strategic restructuring, cost-cutting, and the expansion of activities in growth markets outside the EU. The chapter examines the impact of a rapidly growing share of distributed power in the EU and the incumbents' initial response to this new dynamic in their European home markets.

Abstract

The transformation of the power system in terms of efficiency and sustainability will further lead to increasing converter-coupled generation and demand. This changes the system's characteristics and influences its stability. Despite these fundamental changes, the secure operation of the power system must be maintained at all times. DG and any converter-coupled generation of relevant size are requested to stay connected to keep power equilibrium and to support the voltage during faults. The balanced fast voltage control currently applied for all types of faults could be improved by an unbalanced injection of short-circuit current among the three phases depending on the fault. A technical solution is an active control of the negative-sequence during unbalanced faults. However, introducing a general requirement, e.g. in grid codes, for this new feature must be well justified. This paper is intended to start a structured discussion of unbalanced fast voltage control by converter-coupled generation for unbalanced faults from a system perspective.

An up-to-date comprehensive overview of the role of thermal energy storage is presented in the context of achieving a more rational use of energy and in particular its contribution towards satisfying the future requirement. A summary of thermal energy storage theory is given and its concepts are discussed. The energy density and the economic viability for several storage media are also presented.

Abstract

For islanded microgrids, droop-based control concepts have been developed both in single and three-phase variants. The three-phase controllers often assume a balanced network; hence, unbalance sharing and/or mitigation remains a challenging issue. Therefore, in this paper, unbalance is considered in a three-phase islanded microgrid in which the distributed generation (DG) units are operated by the voltage-based droop (VBD) control. For this purpose, the VBD control, which has been developed for single-phase systems, is extended for a three-phase application and an additional control loop is added for unbalance mitigation and sharing. The method is based on an unbalance mitigation scheme by DG units in grid-connected systems, which is altered for usage in grid-forming DG units with droop control. The reaction of the DG units to unbalance is determined by the main parameter of the additional control loop, viz., the distortion damping resistance, Rd. The effect of Rd on the unbalance mitigation is studied in this paper, i.e., dependent on Rd, the DG units can be resistive for unbalance (RU) or they can contribute in the weakest phase (CW). The paper shows that the RU method decreases the line losses in the system and achieves better power equalization between the DG unit's phases. However, it leads to a larger voltage unbalance near the loads. The CW method leads to a more uneven power between the DG unit's phases and larger line losses, but a better voltage quality near the load. However, it can negatively affect the stability of the system. In microgrids with multiple DG units, the distortion damping resistance is set such that the unbalanced load can be shared between multiple DG units in an actively controlled manner rather than being determined by the microgrid configuration solely. Abstract

Delivering high power quality in single‐phase distribution has witnessed more challenges especially with the increased penetration of single‐phase distributed generation (DG). This paper proposes a smart solid‐state‐based transformer, which aims to replace traditional ones, for single‐phase distribution laterals, and provide load balancing and protection to the three‐phase main feeders, that is based on connecting the single‐phase lateral to the three‐phase main feeder through a power electronics converter. This converter transfers balanced power from and to the three‐phase feeder while automatically regulating the lateral single‐phase voltage, hence, assuring high power quality without requiring any transformer on‐load tap changer. A 7‐level packed‐U‐cells (PUC) single‐phase inverter topology was used to deliver single‐phase regulated sinusoidal voltage to the AC loads, and at the same time, it is able to deliver DC power to DC loads. The simulation and hardware‐in‐the‐loop (HIL) results have shown that the proposed topology delivers high power quality for both AC and DC loads under different operating scenarios. Moreover, the converter can play the role of a solid‐state protection device coordinated with other up‐ and downstream protective devices. Abstract

Active distribution grids that contain energy sources (so-called distributed generation or DG) are nowadays a reality. Besides the many benefits DGs bring to the distribution grid, some challenges are associated with their integration. Since there are DGs now in the distribution grid, the occurrence of islanding operation is possible. Since an islanding operation can be dangerous, it is necessary to have an effective method to detect it. In the last decade, scientists have made a great effort to develop and test various islanding detection methods (IDMs). Many approaches have been tested, and the methods based on computational intelligence (CI) have shown great potential. Among them, artificial neural networks (ANNs) gained most of the research attention. This paper focuses on ANN application for islanding detection. It gives an exhaustive review of the ANN types used for islanding detection, the types of input data, and their transformation to fit the ANNs. Furthermore, various applications based on specific input data, preprocessing types, different learning algorithms, real-time implementation, and various distribution models used for ANN are reviewed. This paper investigates the potential of ANNs to enhance islanding detection accuracy, reduce non-detection zone (NDZ), and contribute to an overall efficient detection method. The profitable commercialization and swift growth in electrified transportation requires load management controllers. Effective load management controllers can reduce the peak load on the power grid, balance the load demand and improve the stability of the power grid. Several techniques are available to optimize the load, including battery swapping, vehicle-to-grid (V2G), vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-home (V2H) approaches. This paper addresses effects of rising adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) and the potential for an increased load on the distribution system, which requires load optimization to ensure sustainable development. This paper offers a comprehensive review of all possible energy management controllers used in EVs for load optimization and power split controllers for splitting power between the battery and super-capacitor in hybrid energy storage systems (HESS) to increase battery life span. These controllers are classified into three categories, fuzzy logic controller, voltage-based controller and soft computing-based controller, with their constraints, advantages and disadvantages and finally sum up with their current challenges and future recommendation. The paper also reveals the wireless charging with their pros and cons. The findings have implications for the design and implementation of controllers for EVs to ensure their sustainable development and reduce fossil fuel usage. This study will be highly helpful to the researchers, industrialist and investors as a ready literature of energy management controllers for EVs, with information of their recommendations and challenges. Abstract

The paper proposes a new stochastic multiobjective technoeconomic model for integrating photovoltaic (PV) and wind energy resources in electricity price (EP)‐driven distribution systems. The primary goal of this paper is to determine the optimal location and capacity for renewable energy‐based distributed generation, specifically PV and wind resources, while considering weather and system uncertainties. These uncertainties include stochastic variations in PV illumination intensity, wind speed, EP, and load fluctuations. To address these uncertainties, the paper employs scenario modeling techniques named as Latin hypercube sampling with Cholesky decomposition. This technique generates multiple correlated scenarios that represent uncertain variables. Subsequently, a scenario reduction technique is applied to identify the scenario with the highest probability. Later, a mathematical model is developed to minimize an objective function that encompasses various factors like system losses, node voltage deviations, the cost of purchasing power from the grid; and simultaneously maximize the total annual energy savings. The objective is to find optimal solutions that strike a balance between different objectives. To obtain an efficient optimum solution, this paper employs an effective meta‐heuristic technique named as JAYA algorithm. The results obtained by the JAYA algorithm are juxtaposed with those obtained using particle swarm optimization and genetic algorithm techniques. The proposed method is evaluated using Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 33‐node and IEEE 69‐node test feeders to validate its feasibility and effectiveness.
