As a contribution of the sustainable use of water and soil for maize production in the semi arid region of Mexico, we evaluate the effect of drip and furrow irrigation techniques and nitrogen fertilization on income, water irrigation efficiency and protein content in the maize kernel. The experiment was randomly performed in complete blocks, with fourth repetitions and two sub samples for treatment. In general, the best efficiency in the use of water irrigation was the drip irrigation technique alone or mixed with the lower nitrogen doses, whereas the best efficiency in the use of the drip irrigation were the drip irrigation technique mixed with the higher nitrogen doses on the maize income and the drip irrigation technique mixed with the lower nitrogen doses on biological quality of the grain. That is the reason why the drip irrigation technique could made more sustainable the use of soil and water. The drip irrigation technique with nitrogen fertilization could be an alternative to maize production due to the lower risks to producers and consequently the lower impacts on the environment.
