The energy content of ground motion records obtained during the 2019 M6.4, M7.1 Ridgecrest, California earthquakes which occurred closely in space is analyzed in this paper. Wavelet transform as a powerful tool, that is used to evaluate the energy content characteristics including cumulative energy profiles and the total energy for different components of records, was obtained at three stations named China Lake Christmas Canyon, China Lake and Tower 2. Due to the fact that the energy-based parameters could be well correlated with damage distribution, this path has been taken into consideration in this research work with the light of the powerful wavelet tool. For this purpose, the discrete wavelet transform is efficiently used for multi-resolution decomposition of acceleration time history of ground motions and a new framework is presented to estimate the energy level of earthquake sequences. Finally, the pseudo-period corresponding to each corresponding level is introduced and the distribution of energy vs. the pseudo-period is discussed. The results of this paper provide a platform to compare the energy levels of different earthquake sequences in different periods. The new generation of China Railway Track System III (CRTS III) ballastless track structure has been found vulnerable under high-level earthquakes. However, the seismic characteristics and the damage mechanism had not been well studied. In this paper, a 4-span high-speed railway (HSR) simply supported bridge-track system model is established to investigate the seismic response and damage mechanism of the bridge-CRTS III slab ballastless track system under transverse earthquakes by nonlinear history analysis. In accordance with the results, the piers have a good seismic performance under high-level earthquake (0.57 g). The non-uniform vibration of unequal-height piers results millimeter-level inconsistent displacements between the girders. The fixed bearing is vulnerable under the earthquakes with PGA of 0.3 g and 0.57 g, indicating that the seismic design of fixed bearing should be optimized to enhance the seismic resistance under high-intensity earthquake. After the damage of fixed bearing, the friction is not enough to pull the girders to vibrate together with piers which leads the sliding of girders. The sliding of girder exacerbates the non-uniform displacements of girders and roadbed. The non-uniform vibration and residual slips of girders lead deformation of the rail, especially forming turning angles at the girder joints which may impact the safety of train operation. With critical lessons drawn from past major earthquakes, the engineering community is appealing for a fundamental shift in the existing design philosophy for structures in seismic zones. One strategy is to endow structures with self-centering (SC) capability. While the concept of SC structures is not new, many novel technologies have been recently emerging that are more efficient, compact, and cost-effective; on the other hand, growing controversy and dispute have also been appearing with deepening investigations. This paper presents a critical review of the evolution of SC technologies and systems for both researchers and practitioners, with an emphasis on post-tension (PT), high-performance spring, and shape memory alloy (SMA) strategies. These SC technologies, together with various energy dissipation options, form the basis of a large part of the newly proposed SC philosophies. This review also includes typical SC structural members such as beam-to-column connections, braces, dampers, shear walls, bridge piers, and isolation bearings, followed by a discussion on the dynamic behavior from a system-level point of view. Available design approaches for SC structures are also touched upon, and practical applications that have emerged over the past decades in several countries including Canada, China, New Zealand, and the US are presented. The track structure has an effect on the dynamic characteristics of the bridge structure, which makes the seismic response of the bridge structure complicated. In this paper, an assessment method is proposed to evaluate the seismic risk of bridge structure, including over-limit risk and over-limit scale. Based on a newly proposed simplified model with high accuracy and high computational efficiency, a total of 3000 calculation conditions are analyzed and the sample stability of response is validated to ensure the reliability of the seismic risk analysis. The seismic risks in the longitudinal direction of the track-bridge model are compared with that of the trackless model, and the influence of the constraint effect of China Railway Track System II ballastless track structure on the seismic risk of the structure is obtained. The influence of the number of spans and PGA on track constraints is also revealed. The analysis results, based on a large number of samples, show that although track constraints can reduce the seismic risk of some phenomenon, such as girders' collision, the expected enhancement of longitudinal seismic safety of the system cannot be guaranteed in general, especially when the number of spans is large. However, it is noted that the track constraint can effectively control the over-limit scale of the system, which can reduce the expected repair cost after an earthquake. Therefore, it can be considered that the positive effect of the track constraints is more significant in economy than in structural safety when the bridge is subjected to a longitudinal earthquake excitation. The dynamic effect is a very important issue widely debated by scholars when studying the genetic and disaster-causing mechanisms of earthquake-triggered landslides. First, the dynamic effect mechanism and phenomena of earthquake-triggered landslides were summarized in this paper. Then, the primary types of dynamic effects were further used to interpret the Mogangling landslide in Moxi Town of Luding County, China. A field investigation, remote sensing, numerical calculation and theoretical analysis were carried out to illustrate the failure mechanism of slope rock masses affected by earthquakes. The interaction between seismic waves and slope rock masses and the induced dynamic effect of slope rock masses were primarily accounted for in the analysis. The slope topography, rock mass weathering and unloading characteristics, river erosion, regional seismogenic structure, and rock mass structure characteristics were also discussed. The results showed that the formation of the Mogangling landslide was mainly related to the high amplification effect of seismic acceleration and back slope effects, interface dynamic stress effects, and double-sided slope effects of seismic waves caused by the catastrophic Ms 7.75 Moxi Earthquake in 1786. The principles for the site and route selection of large-scale infrastructure in the planning stage and the scientific prevention of seismic geological disasters were proposed on the basis of the dynamic effect of earthquake-induced landslides. In recent years, the volcanic activity of Changbai Mountain has been accompanied by several earthquakes, and the frequent human engineering activities have led to a gradual increase in the number of collapses in the region, which severely impacts residents' lives and property safety. In northeastern China, the Changbai Mountain area in the southeastern Jilin Province is a typical mountain environment. This paper selects 12 evaluation indicators to build a hazard assessment system, including slope, aspect, elevation, curvature, lithology, NDVI, land use type, distance from the fault, the river from the road, volcanic earthquake, and annual average precipitation. Using emotional weight (G1 method) and objective weight (WOE-CV method), the hazard due to collapses in the study area is evaluated too. Among them, the transcendence probability of volcanic earthquakes greater than VI degree represents the relationship between Changbai Mountain volcanic earthquakes and the assessment of geological collapse hazard. The results show that high- and very high-hazard areas are mainly distributed in densely populated areas and national and provincial trunk lines, with apparent spatial agglomeration characteristics. The low-hazard area, medium-hazard area, high-hazard area and very high-hazard area accounted for 19.33%, 44.19%, 33.85% and 2.63% of the total area of the study area, respectively. By comparing the previous geological hazard survey reports in the area with the collapse hazard zoning map in this paper, 87.72% of the known collapse hazard areas are distributed within high and very high hazard zones, indicating that the conclusions of the article are more accurate and in line with the actual situation. High precision gravity observation is an important tool of seismological research and has played an important role in earthquake prediction in China in recent years. This paper first briefly introduces the development status and classification of gravity observation instruments, then compares the seismic gravity observations and researches for seismic events between China and Japan from the aspects of the scale of the seismic gravity observation network, the gravity data processing process and the interpretation of gravity observation results, and finally systematically analyzes the challenges faced by the gravity observation re⁃ search in China. The rapid and accurate extraction of wide-area coseismic landslide locations is critical in earthquake emergencies. At present, the extraction of coseismic landslides is mainly based on post-earthquake site investigation or the interpretation of human–computer interactions based on remote sensing images. However, the identification efficiency is low, which seriously delays the earthquake emergency response. On the basis of the available multisource and multiscale remote sensing data, numerous studies have been carried out on the methods of coseismic landslide extraction, such as pixel analysis, object-oriented analysis, change detection, and machine learning. However, the effectiveness of coseismic landslide extraction was low in wide areas with complex topographic and geomorphic backgrounds. Therefore, this paper offers a comprehensive study of the factors influencing coseismic landslides and researches rapid and accurate wide-area coseismic landslide extraction methods with multisource remote sensing and geoscience technology. These techniques include digital elevation modeling (DEM) and its derived slopes and aspects. An embedded multichannel spectral–topographic feature fusion model for coseismic landslide extraction based on DeepLab V3+ is proposed, and a knowledge-enhanced deep learning information extraction method integrating geological knowledge is formed. Using the Jiuzhaigou Ms7.0 earthquake (seismic intensity VIII) in Sichuan Province, China, a comparison of landslide extraction models and strategies is carried out. The results show that the model proposed in this paper achieves the best balance in the accuracy and efficiency of wide-area extractions. Using multiple feature data of coseismic landslides, the problem of mixed pixels is solved. The rate of the misidentification of landslides as clouds, snow, buildings, and roads is significantly lower than in other methods. The identified landslide boundaries are smoother and more accurate, and the connectivity is better. Compared with other methods, ours can more accurately eliminate landslides not triggered by the Jiuzhaigou earthquake. While using the image block strategy to ensure extraction efficiency, it also improves the extraction accuracy of wide-area coseismic landslides in complex backgrounds. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents the investigation results of a base-isolated RC frame-shear wall structure located in Luding County, Sichuan Province, China, which was damaged by a Ms 6.8 earthquake on September 5, 2022. This recently constructed school office building was about 9 km away from the epicenter. The isolation layer of this building consists of 54 rubber bearings and 12 viscous dampers. These viscous dampers or their connections failed during the earthquake, and the limit state included connection breaking or global buckling of the damper. Also, the superstructure suffered some minor damage. To investigate the cause of structural damages, a nonlinear time-history analysis is conducted using the ground motions recorded by four seismic stations close to the building. Slow-moving landslide-prone areas (SLAs) are unstable objects on the terrestrial surface that can collapse rapidly when provoked by earthquakes, leading to infrastructure damage. It is critical to identify SLAs prior to earthquake events and assess their hazard-causing probabilities when triggered. An assessment approach of earthquake-triggered geohazards is proposed in this paper by combining interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) derived SLAs and geological and geomorphological factors. Taking the Ms6.8 Luding earthquake, which occurred in the Sichuan Province of southwestern China on September 5, 2022, as an example, 1320 scenes of Sentinel-1 SAR data in western Sichuan were processed using the small baseline subset (SBAS) InSAR technique before the earthquake. After the earthquake, hazard probability assessment was performed in real-time by filtering the SLAs using a spatial analysis technique with geological and geomorphological factors, e.g., real-time peak ground acceleration (PGA), slope, distance to fault (DTF), and distance to the river (DTR) data. The results show that 11 SLAs were classified into high-risk zones. As verified by the Luding co-seismic landslide dataset from visual interpretation of optical remote sensing images, 142 coseismic landslides were triggered by the earthquake in these high-risk regions. In these areas, an ancient landslide, with high pre-earthquake displacement rates (−50 mm/year) on the scarp was reactivated under the Luding earthquake forces. Drone-supported last-mile humanitarian logistics applications play a crucial role in the rapid and efficient delivery of essential relief items, such as medicine, blood, and vaccines, during disaster and emergency situations. This paper explores a novel drone-supported relief facility location problem (DSRFLP) aimed at establishing an effective drone-supported last-mile humanitarian logistics system. The problem involves making joint decisions for both pre-disaster and post-disaster phases while considering the characteristics of drone-based delivery operations and uncertain demands. In the pre-disaster phase, we make the decisions regarding the locations of drone-supported relief facilities, inventory prepositioning of relief items, assignment of drones to the opened facilities, and allocation of drones to disaster demand sites. In the post-disaster phase, we make decisions related to delivery quantities. To tackle the challenge of incomplete demand distribution information in chaotic disaster environments, we establish a distributionally robust optimisation (DRO) model to handle the uncertainty of demands. This model adopts worst-case mean Conditional Value-at-Risk as the risk measurement, reflecting the risk-averse attitude of humanitarian organisers. In this paper, three ambiguity sets (box, ellipsoidal, and polyhedral) are considered to describe the ambiguity distributions of demands. To overcome the computational challenge, we reformulate the DRO model under three ambiguity sets into two mixed-integer linear programming models and one second-order cone programming model, which can be efficiently solved by off-the-shelf solvers. Furthermore, we validate our proposed DRO model through a small-scale example and a large-scale case study based on the Lushan earthquake in China. The computational outcomes underscore the superior performance of the proposed DRO model to mitigate the impact arising from incomplete probability distributions. We propose managerial implications and insights to support the decision-making of humanitarian organisations based on the experimental results. The role of religious belief in disasters has attracted increased scholarly interest in recent years. This paper shows that religious belief can generate disaster resilience through the pathways of disaster framing, mental health, and disaster behaviours. Drawing on interviews conducted with Tibetan Buddhist believers in the Yushu earthquake area of China, this study indicates that notions of Tibetan Buddhism, as well as religious practices, helped locals to make sense of the 2010 event, obtain spiritual support in its aftermath, foster a sense of community, and develop a prosocial post‐earthquake environment. These religious notions and practices also assisted in sustaining a faith‐based network composed of two kinds of important local social relationships, layperson–layperson and layperson–monk, which increased local disaster resilience at the level of response behaviour. The findings enrich our understanding of the religious source of disaster resilience and yield insights into disaster risk reduction in religious regions, especially where Buddhist belief is prevalent. As one of the most important urban infrastructure systems, the road network plays a vital role in post-earthquake emergency response. Quantitative evaluation of the emergency response functionality of road network under earthquakes can provide decision support for emergency planning and future construction. In this paper, a novel network performance metric is proposed to consider both the special traffic demand in emergency response and the supply capability of road network. On this basis, an integrated probabilistic assessment framework for post-earthquake network emergency response functionality is presented, considering various uncertainties. In the framework, a penalty-based approach is proposed to consider the impact of partially degraded links on network functionality. In this paper, an automatic aftershock forecasting system for China is presented. Based on a parameter-free historical analogy method, this system can produce short-term aftershock forecast, including seismic sequence types and the magnitude of the largest aftershock, within a few minutes after a major earthquake and can further provide scientists and government agencies with a set of background information for consultation purposes. First, the system construction concept and operation framework are described, and an evaluation of the forecast performance of the system is then conducted considering earthquakes from 2019 to 2021 in mainland China. The results indicate that the sequence type classification precision reaches 83.5%, and the magnitude of more than 90% of the aftershocks is smaller than that of upper range forecast. This system is fast and easy to control, and all the reports and maps can be produced approximately 5 min after earthquake occurrence. In the network‐based on‐site earthquake early warning system (EEWS), the 'blind zone', namely the zone where the issued warning arrives later than the destructive S and surface waves, is one of the challenges affecting its effectiveness. The 'blind zone' is determined by the interstation distance, or equivalently the density of seismic stations, of the network. In this paper, we suggest a practical approach according to which, when in a region a temporary increase of seismic hazard is declared, additional stations are deployed in such a way that the blind zone is temporarily reduced. In the procedure, the time‐dependent neo‐deterministic seismic hazard assessment (TD‐NDSHA) plays a vital role in the identification of the regions potentially exposed to high macroseismic intensities. As a showcase example, we consider the scenario of year 2014 at the Sichuan‐Yunnan border of southwest China. The TD‐NDSHA is based on the standard NDSHA procedure at regional scale (bedrock conditions), with the 'controlling earthquakes' defined on the basis of the Annual Consultation. We show that the 'blind zone' can be reduced in the identified areas of interest (e.g., MMI ≥ VI), by deploying a limited number of additional seismic stations. In the case where false alarms can be tolerated, significant reduction of the 'blind zone' can be implemented by moving from a network‐based EEWS to a single‐sensor‐based EEWS and skipping the process of location and magnitude‐determination/prediction procedures. This paper mainly introduces the layout of mobile gravity monitoring network in China, and the gravity measurement data processing and extraction method of gravity precursor information. Mobile gravity monitoring results can reflects the image of dynamic evolution of regional gravity field and its tectonic activity characteristic. Based on a large number of observation data, the relationship between gravity variation and earthquake preparation is studied, and the ideas, ways and methods of earthquake prediction research are explored. The mid-term earthquake risk prediction research is carried out by using gravity observation data, and its results are used for earthquake consultation and annual earthquake trend prediction in time, which provide basises for the prediction of strong earthquakes and the delineation of annual dangerous areas in China. this paper points out the existing problems in mobile gravity monitoring in China, and puts forward the idea and thinking of using time-varying gravity monitoring data to promote seismic prediction research. • This paper examines the economic effects of multiple earthquakes in China using prefecture-level data and a DID approach. • Both moderate and strong earthquakes have a significant long-term negative effect on affected prefectures' GDP per capita. • Earthquakes' effects vary based on government fiscal autonomy, social capital intensity, and infrastructure development. • Household savings rate, fixed asset investment, and innovation mainly contribute to long-term negative effects. This paper examines the short-term and long-term economic impacts of relative-ly small but more frequent earthquakes in China. Using a difference-in-differences approach based on prefecture-level city panel data, combined with a unique data set on seismic events in China, we find that both moderate and strong earthquakes significantly decrease affected prefectures' GDP per capita in the long run. These effects vary depending on the level of local government fiscal autonomy, social capital intensity, and infrastructure development. We also find that three mechanisms contribute to long-term negative effects: the household savings rate, fixed asset investment, and innovation. Railway transportation, as an important lifeline during earthquake relief and post-disaster reconstruction, has an extremely significant role. The study of track irregularity caused by earthquakes is the basis for ensuring traffic safety after their occurrence. In this paper, a finite element model of a five-span simply supported high-speed railway beam bridge with the China Railway Track System (CRTS) II was established and an experimental verification was performed. Eighty arbitrarily selected seismic waves were extracted from the Pacific Earthquake Engineering Research Center (PEER) strong ground motion database and a nonlinear time-history analysis was performed on the finite element model. The frequency–domain distribution law of earthquake-induced track irregularities was studied. A stable target earthquake-induced track irregularity spectrum model was constructed, and its expression was fitted. According to the results, in the case of transverse earthquakes, the rails experienced noticeable alignment irregularity and cross-level irregularity, while the amplitude of the gauge and vertical irregularity were relatively small. The target irregularity spectrum has a higher amplitude in the low-frequency components. When peak ground acceleration (PGA) was low, earthquake-induced track irregularity was not obvious, but the deteriorating effects of earthquakes on track irregularities increased significantly with increasing PGA. Purpose: The purpose of the study is to investigate and reveal this relationship of various engineering demand parameters (EDPs) of this structural type and intensity measures (IMs) under intra-plate earthquakes. Design/methodology/approach: The nonlinear finite element model used was calibrated first to the existing results of the shaking table test to verify the modeling technique. Findings: This paper investigated the relationship between intensity measures and various engineering demand parameters of cable-stayed bridges using intra-plate earthquakes. The correlation analysis and Pearson coefficient are used to study the correlation between EDPs and IMs. The results showed that peak ground velocity (PGV)/peak ground acceleration, peak ground displacement and root-mean-square of displacement showed weak correlation with IMs. PGV, sustained maximum velocity, a peak value of spectral velocity, A95 parameter, Housner intensity and spectral acceleration at the fundamental period, the spectral velocity at the fundamental period and spectral displacement at the fundamental period were determined to be better predictors for various EDPs. Originality/value: This paper investigated the correlation between the intensity measures of intra-plate earthquakes with the seismic responses of a typical long-span cable-stayed bridge in China. The nonlinear finite element model used was calibrated to the existing results of the shaking table test to verify the modeling technique. The observation of electromechanical coupling might be used as an important tool to detect pre-seismic changes associated with the preparation of earthquakes. This paper attempts to study the electromechanical coupling process before the large earthquakes by using the load/unload response ratio (LURR) approach in which the geo-electric data and Benioff strain of small earthquakes were adopted as the data input. The variation of Coulomb failure stress induced by earth tides on the fault surface of the mainshock is applied to differentiate the loading and unloading stages. Using this technique, we test the geo-electric data recorded at the Hotan observatory near the epicenter of 2020 Yutian Ms 6.4 earthquake. Results show that the LURR time sequence fluctuated around 1.0 for many years and reached significant high peaks at the beginning of 2020. More importantly, this evolution correlates well with the LURR time series calculated by using the Benioff strain of small earthquakes within the circular region of 300 km radius centered at the epicenter. The underlying physics of the changes should be caused by the fluid infiltration derived from pre-seismic rock dilatancy. Beijing plain is a strong earthquake tectonic area in China. There was a Sanhe-Pinggu earthquake with Ms8 that happened in1679. The seismogenic fault of this earthquake is called Xiadian fault. Our work found fault with a similar strike and opposite dip in the west of the Xiadian fault, which is called the Xiadian west fault in this paper. Six shallow seismic profiles have been constructed to determine the location of the fault in Sanhe city, and the late Quaternary activity of the fault is studied with the method of combined drilling, magnetic susceptibility logging, and luminescence dating. The results of shallow seismic exploration show that the fault is zigzag and generally strikes NE and inclines NW. According to the core histogram and logging curves of ten boreholes and eight effective dating data, the buried depth of the upper breakpoint of the concealed fault is about 12 m, which dislocates the late Pleistocene strata. The effective dating result of this set of strata is 36.52 ±5.39 ka. The vertical slip rate has been about 0.075± 0.023 mm/a since the late Pleistocene and about 0.058 ± 0.030 mm/a since the late period of the late Pleistocene. It can be inferred that the Xiadian west fault is probably a part of the seismogenic structure of the Sanhe-Pinggu Ms8 earthquake that happened in 1679. On 21 May 2021 (UT), Yangbi Ms6.4 and Maduo Ms7.4 earthquakes occurred in mainland China. This paper analyzed the ionospheric perturbations possibly related to the earthquake, based on global positioning system (GPS) total electron content (TEC) and global ionosphere map (GIM) TEC data. We identified GPS TEC anomalies by the sliding quartile, based on statistical analysis. After eliminating the days with high solar activity levels and strong geomagnetic disturbances, the time series analysis of GPS TEC data showed that there were significant TEC anomalies from 5 to 10 May. TEC anomalies were mainly positive anomalies. We obtained the spatial and temporal distributions of TEC anomalies using natural neighbor interpolation (NNI). The results showed that the TEC anomalies were distributed in the seismogenic zone and surrounded the epicenters of the Maduo and Yangbi earthquakes, indicating that they may be related to the earthquakes. From the GIM TEC difference map, we found the TEC enhancement in the seismogenic zone and its magnetic conjugate area of the Maduo and Yangbi earthquakes at 10:00–12:00 (UT) on the 5 and 6 May. We discussed our results according to the lithosphere-atmosphere-ionosphere coupling mechanism. Finally, based our results, we suggested that the Yangbi and Maduo earthquakes may affect the ionosphere through seismogenic electric field and thermal anomalies generated during the process of lithosphere-atmosphere-ionosphere coupling. As one of the most prevailing geodetic tools, the interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) technique can accurately obtain co-seismic displacements, but is limited to the one-dimensional line-of-sight (LOS) measurement. It is therefore difficult to completely reveal the real three-dimensional (3D) surface displacements with InSAR. By employing azimuth displacement observations from pixel offset tracking (POT) and multiple aperture InSAR (MAI) techniques, 3D displacements of large-magnitude earthquakes can be obtained by integrating the ascending and descending data. However, this method cannot be used to accurately realize the 3D surface displacement measurements of small-magnitude earthquakes due to the low accuracies of the POT/MAI-derived azimuth displacement measurements. In this paper, an alternative method is proposed to calculate co-seismic 3D displacements from ascending and descending InSAR-LOS observations with the dislocation model-based displacement direction constraint. The main contribution lies in the two virtual observation equations that are obtained from the dislocation model-based forward-modeling 3D displacements, which are then combined with the ascending/descending InSAR observations to calculate the 3D displacements. The basis of the two virtual observation equations is that the directions of the 3D displacement vectors are very similar for real and model-based 3D displacements. In addition, the weighted least squares (WLS) method is employed to solve the final 3D displacements, which aims to consider and balance the possible errors in the InSAR observations as well as the dislocation model-based displacement direction constraint. A simulation experiment demonstrates that the proposed method can achieve more accurate 3D displacements compared with the existing methods. The co-seismic 3D displacements of the 2020 Nima earthquake are then accurately obtained by the proposed method. The results show that co-seismic displacements are dominated by the vertical displacement, the magnitude of the horizontal displacement is relatively small, and the overall displacement pattern fits well with the tensile rupture. Community is directly responsible for implementing the policy measures against public emergencies such as extreme weather, earthquake, flash flood and pandemic diseases. Summarizing the experience at the urban community level can help promote the global emergency management. This paper, from the perspective of COVID-19 prevention and control, selects three communities with different features to explore an effective response system for public emergency management at the urban community level. It demonstrates that based on a centralized leadership, the multi-level governance (MLG) network combined with information technology has mobilized their participation in combating COVID-19 and ensured the effective and timely response to the public emergencies, which blocked the spread of epidemic to the greatest extent, proving worthy of being promoted as one of the Chinese approaches and Chinese wisdom. As one of the most earthquake-prone regions in the world, China faces extremely serious earthquake threats, especially for those heavily populated urban areas located near large fault zones. To improve the ability to prevent and minimize earthquake disaster risks, and to reduce earthquake disaster losses, China is currently building a nationwide earthquake early warning system (EEWS) with the largest seismic network in the world. In this paper, we present the newest progress of this project through describing the overall architecture of the national EEWS and evaluating the system performance during the 2022 Lushan M6.1 earthquake. The accuracy of the source characterization for the Lushan earthquake is discussed by comparing the continually estimated location and magnitude with the catalogs obtained from the China Earthquake Networks Center. For this earthquake, the EEWS generated a total of five alerts, and an initial alert was created 5.7 s after its occurrence, with excellent epicentral location and origin time estimation. The final alert was issued 16.5 s after origin time with a magnitude estimate of M6.1, the same as the catalog value. However, from the point view of alerting performance, the radius of the real blind zone without warning time was about 30 km and much larger than the theoretical result, mainly caused by the releasing system not considering the epicenter distance of each terminal when issuing the alerts. Although the earthquake exposed some limitations that need to be addressed in future upgrades, the results showed that most aspects of the EEWS presented a robust performance, with continuous, reliable event detections and early-warning information releasing. Both the regional earthquake surface wave and seismic ambient noise provide important constraints on the Earth's structure, and yet no study satisfactorily combined them for the best imaging of subsurface seismic structure. In this study, we address this issue by developing a new method to simultaneously determine surface wave phase velocity and earthquake centroid parameters in three steps: (a) preliminary phase velocity inversion based on seismic ambient noise, (b) preliminary earthquake relocation based on earthquake surface wave data, and (c) simultaneous inversion for phase velocity and earthquake centroid parameters with constraints of interstation phase velocity measurements based on seismic ambient noise and event‐station phase velocity measurements based on earthquake surface wave data. Application of the method in the North South Seismic Belt region in China results in high‐resolution Rayleigh wave phase velocity maps and accurate earthquake centroid parameters. The additional earthquake data notably improve resolution of the inverted phase velocity model in west Yunnan and central Tibetan blocks, the regions with sparse seismic station coverage. The inverted phase velocity model exhibits high‐velocity anomalies in cratonic regions and the Emeishan Large Igneous Province, and low‐velocity anomalies in the interior and surrounding regions of the Tibetan Plateau. Relocation places earthquakes in shallow depths with geotherm above the crustal rock's brittle‐ductile transition temperature of ∼400℃ $\sim 400\textdegree$, revealing thermal control on thickness of the seismogenic zone. With earthquake centroid parameters constrained, earthquake data are expected to provide further constraints on the deep seismic structure that is beyond the sampling limit of seismic ambient noise. Whereas both the regional earthquake data and seismic ambient noise provide constraints on the seismic imaging, no study yet satisfactorily combined these two types of data for the best results. In this paper, we develop a new method to combine both types of seismic data to better image seismic structure and apply the new method in the North South Seismic Belt region in China. The method consists of three steps to simultaneously determine seismic structure and earthquake source parameters. The resultant seismic images exhibit noted improvement in revealing high‐resolution seismic structure in regions with sparse seismic station coverage, such as the Tibetan Plateau and its adjacent regions. The redetermined earthquake depths reveal thermal control on the maximal depth of earthquake occurrence in the region, with earthquakes occurring at the shallow depths colder than rock's brittle‐ductile transition temperature of ∼400℃ $\sim 400\textdegree$. Seismic intensity measures are essential quantitative parameters for evaluating and predicting engineering structures' seismic risk and vulnerability. Various regional earthquake analysis and vulnerability models with evaluation and prediction capabilities have been developed using macroseismic and instrumental intensity measures. These results have significant positive implications for evaluating large-scale regional earthquake resilience and predicting earthquake risks. However, the traditional determination of seismic intensity measures is based on given seismic station detection data and macroscopic intensity standards, and the developed seismic risk models are relatively outdated, resulting in relatively low accuracy in assessing the vulnerability of regional structures. This paper proposed an improved instrumental intensity calculation equation and updated the model using 216,000 acceleration records monitored by nine typical seismic stations in China during the Jiuzhaigou earthquake on August 8, 2017. The proposed calculation model was combined with the latest version of China's macrointensity standard, and undamaged building samples were sufficiently considered. The vulnerability level of 1,499 buildings surveyed in the Jiuzhaigou earthquake was assessed. This paper innovatively proposed a membership index calculation model to estimate the impact relationship between different vulnerability levels. A comparative curve model was generated with the updated vulnerability databases of four typical regional structures, considering different vulnerability membership indices. Using the improved seismic intensity measures and nonlinear regression model, an improved vulnerability fitting model was developed to assess the seismic risk of regional structures. Thermal variations in surface and atmosphere observed from multiple satellites prior to strong earthquakes have been widely reported ever since seismic thermal anomalies were discovered three decades ago. These thermal changes are related to stress accumulation caused by the tectonic activities in the final stage of earthquake preparation. In the present paper, we focused on the thermal changes associated with the 2021 Madoi M 7.3 earthquake in China and analyzed the temporal and spatial evolution of the Index of Microwave Radiation Anomaly (IMRA) and the Index of Longwave Radiation Anomaly (ILRA) based on 8-year microwave brightness temperature (MWBT) and 14-year outgoing longwave radiation (OLR) data collected by satellites. We also explored their responses in different tectonic units (seismogenic fault zone and active tectonic block). Our results indicated that the enhanced IMRA was distributed along the seismogenic fault since mid-February and reappeared for a longer time and with stronger intensity in March and April 2021. The pronounced enhancement in the ILRA was observed within one month over Bayan Har tectonic and adjacent blocks. The higher ILRA over the tectonic blocks in the southern Tibet Plateau at the beginning of 2021 could be associated with the regional stress accumulation, as proven by the occurrences of two moderate earthquakes during this period. On May 22nd, 2021, an MS7.4 earthquake occurred near the Maduo county of the Qinghai Province, China, within the Bayan Har Block. Seismic activities have been intense in this block, thus whether the Maduo Earthquake will bring subsequent seismic hazards to its surrounding regions raises wide concerns. In this paper, we first calculated the Coulomb failure stress changes caused by the Maduo Earthquake on nearby faults, and estimated how much these faults are brought closer or further from their next failures based on their stressing rates. Next, we combined the Coulomb failure stress changes with the rate-state fictional law to estimate the seismicity rate in the study region in the next decade. A declustered catalogue before the Maduo Earthquake was adopted to calculate background seismicity rate, and rate-state parameters are constrained by fault slip rates. Our results show that the Maduo Earthquake increases stress accumulations in the northwestern portion of the Qingshuihe fault (0.02 MPa at maximum), the two ends of the Kunlun Mountain Pass-Jiangcuo fault (0.01 MPa at maximum), and the northwestern portion of the Maduo-Gande fault (on average ∼0.09 MPa), and seismicity rates are expected to increase near these faults. What is especially worth noting is the seismic hazard in the region extending from the eastern end of the Kunlun Mountain Pass-Jiangcuo fault to the Maqin-Maqu seismic gap on the Eastern Kunlun fault, which is calculated to have experienced a maximum stress increase of 0.67 MPa after the Maduo Earthquake. On the other hand, stress accumulations are reduced in the southern end of the Elashan fault, the Eastern Kunlun fault segment to the west of Maduo, and the northwestern portion of the Dari fault. Seismic hazards are expected to be low in these regions. For the study region as a whole, the probability of an M≥6 earthquake taking place in the next decade is estimated to be 59%, about twice the value calculated for the time period before the Maduo Earthquake. In this paper, the data of electron density, electron temperature and ion compositions detected by the China seismo-electromagnetic satellite (CSES) before Yangbi Ms6.4 and Maduo Ms7.4 earthquakes in China during 21–22 May 2021 are analyzed by using the algorithms of moving average to get the high frequency perturbations, revisited orbit comparison to construct the normal background, and wavelet transform to obtain the spectrum characteristics. Most of the parameters we studied were characterized by synchronous changes and similar frequencies, and even have symmetrical structures in the seismogenic zone, suggesting that they may originate from the same disturbing source. The research results also demonstrated that the electron density and electron temperature forms changed from relatively stable to unstable about 40 days before the earthquakes, and then gradually recovered after the earthquakes. Meanwhile, the disturbances are concentrated near the epicenter. As the earthquakes approach, the number of disturbances gradually becomes more frequent. Based on those observational facts, we suggest that the Yangbi and Maduo earthquakes may have affected the ionosphere through the ionosphere and magnetosphere branch and thermal branch of the lithosphere atmosphere ionosphere coupling model mechanism. China suffers severe continental earthquakes. The 2008 Wenchuan earthquake (Ms 8.0) and the 2014 Ludian earthquake (Ms 6.5) are two representative examples from the modern era. The Wenchuan earthquake caused considerable economic losses, and the Ludian earthquake caused unexpected losses with only moderate magnitude. Based on disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), this paper first calculates aggregated disaster losses and the contributions of three factors: number of deaths or missing persons, number of people affected, and direct economic losses. Then, the losses per unit energy released or area affected are calculated for each earthquake to investigate which of the two earthquakes caused more damage. The paper finishes by investigating the implications and revealing three results. (1) The Wenchuan earthquake induced more damage than the Ludian earthquake, but the latter had relatively higher losses per unit energy than the former. (2) Injuries and affected people contributed most to the total losses for each earthquake, more than fatalities or direct damage. This outcome means that unnoticed aspects have the most severe disaster impacts. In addition, long-term impacts of earthquakes are more serious than usually acknowledged, and more attention needs to be paid to these. (3) The damage from moderate earthquakes can exceed expectations, meaning that disaster mitigation policies in all regions are necessary, regardless of the degree of anticipated hazard. On August 20, 2019, at 2 a.m., a disastrous debris flow occurred in Chediguan gully in Yinxing town, China. The debris flow destroyed the drainage groove and the bridge at the exit of the gully. In addition, the debris flow temporarily blocked the Minjiang River during the flood peak, flooding the Taipingyi hydropower station 200 m upstream and leaving two plant workers missing. To further understand the activity of the debris flow after the Wenchuan earthquake, the characteristics of this debris flow event were studied. Eleven years after the Wenchuan earthquake, a disastrous debris flow still occurred in the Chediguan catchment, causing more severe losses than those of earlier debris flows. In this paper, the formation mechanism and dynamic characteristics of this debris flow event are analysed based on a drone survey, high-definition remote sensing interpretations and other means. The catastrophic debris flow event indicates that debris flows in the Wenchuan earthquake area are still active. A large amount of dredging work in the main gully could effectively reduce the debris flow risk in the gully. In addition, it is also important to repair or rebuild damaged mitigation measures and to establish a real-time monitoring and early warning system for the high-risk gully. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present study reports measurements of radon in groundwater conducted in China between January and December 2013. During the measurement period, a great Ms = 6.6 earthquake occurred in Gansu Province, China. The paper analyses data derived from three nearby stations via monofractal and multifractal detrended fluctuations analysis and explores whether pre-earthquake fractal and long-memory trends exist in the time series. Several critical epochs with characteristic pre-seismic long-lasting fractal patterns are identified in segmented parts of the series. In the whole data series, the fluctuation function, scaling exponent and generalised Hurst exponent depend on the fractal scales, which indicates multifractality. The multifractal spectrum of the raw, shuffled and truncated series showed a significant increase in the degree of fluctuation that can be explained as a pre-earthquake indicator attributable to the Gansu earthquake due to its very large magnitude. In order to better evaluate the performance of the base isolated structure under the near-fault earthquakes, this paper takes into consideration an existing engineering case study in China as the prototype, and uses OpenSEES platform to establish the nonlinear finite element model of the base isolated structure. The nonlinear response of the isolated structure under the near-fault earthquake is analyzed. The incremental dynamic analysis (IDA) method is used to calculate the damage probability of the structure under the nearfault earthquake, and the fragility curve of the base isolated structure is established. The fragility equation is obtained by nonlinear regression, and the error of fragility equation is analyzed. The results show that the maximum value of the inter-story drift of the upper structure under the action of near-fault earthquake is significantly greater than that under the action of far-fault earthquake. With the increase of seismic intensity, the damage probability of base isolated structure increases nonlinearly, and the maximum response value of horizontal displacement of bearing and inter-story drift of superstructure increases generally. In addition, the exceeding probability of the fragility curve based on PSDA is greater than that based on EDP criterion. When the sample points of the two methods are the same, the exceeding probability points calculated based on PSDA can be regarded as accurate values. The fragility curve based on PSDA may overestimate the exceeding probability to some extent, and the overestimation may be enlarged with the increase of failure stage. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, we focus on why intraplate seismic initiation and migration occurs, which has widely been considered to be caused by static stress triggering caused by earthquakes, as well as post-seismic slips. To illustrate the mechanism underlying large earthquakes, in particular the migration caused by two key episodes that occurred after 1500 in the Bohai-Zhangjiakou Fault Zone (BZFZ) of North China, we developed a high-resolution three-dimensional viscoelastic finite element model that includes the active faults with vertical segmentation, their periodical locking, and the lithosphere heterogeneity. We used the birth and death of element groups to simulate stress intensity changes during the two episodes (named Episode I and II), with our results showing that the Tangshan earthquake was primarily triggered by the Sanhe-Pinggu M8.0 earthquake in 1679, whereas the Zhangbei M6.2 earthquake in 1998 was not triggered by earthquakes in Episode I. According to our work, the calculated stress changes in the different segments of the fault zone correspond to the magnitude of the triggered earthquakes. Further, the largest stress decrease was near the Sanhe-Pinggu fault and occurred the largest earthquake in Episode I, whereas the largest stress increase was near the Tangshan fault and occurred during the largest earthquake in Episode II. Given the above, we propose a model for seismic migration to describe the dynamic mechanisms of earthquake migration within the BZFZ and North China, in which the factors affecting both the seismic migration path and intensity primarily include the distance between the triggered active fault and the original fault, the coupling of the active faults, the location and scale of the low-velocity anomaly, its distance from the active fault, and the location and scale of the crustal thinning. The direct economical losses and the tolls of earthquakes are main impacts of earthquake insurance. This paper collected the loss data of earthquake during the years 1950-2015 in China and modeled the direct economical losses and the tolls of earthquake using Copula-mixed distribution model. First, the truncated Gumble distribution and generalized Pareto distribution are mixed to fit the direct economical losses, and the truncated negative binominal distribution and generalized Pareto distribution are mixed to fit the tolls of earthquake. Second, copulas are used to model the dependence between the direct economical losses and the tolls of earthquake. Finally, Monte Carlo simulation method is used to calculate VaR and ES. Several experiments and field observations have demonstrated seismic waves‐induced permeability increases. However, a few experiments have revealed significant decreases in the permeability of fractured sandstone after shaking produced by dynamic stresses. In this paper, we analyze the tidal responses of the water level in two wells (Junan and Dingyuan) situated on and near, respectively, the Tan‐Lu fault in China. The results sampled by a single well indicate that seismic waves could both increase and decrease the permeability. In addition, our results indicate that the earthquakes that decreased the permeability in a single well were distributed in certain azimuthal zones. Given the azimuthal distribution of distant earthquakes, the observed permeability decrease could be attributed to the seismic wave‐induced clogging of fractures that compose the flow paths in the shallow crust. Our research contributes to an enhanced overall understanding of the effects of earthquakes on the permeability of the shallow crust. Rapid assessment of the distribution of earthquake-triggered landslides is an important component of effective disaster mitigation. The effort should be based on both seismic landslide susceptibility and the ground shaking intensity, which is usually measured by peak ground acceleration (PGA). In this paper, we address this issue by analyzing data from the Mw6.1 2014 Ludian, China earthquake. The Newmark method of rigid-block modeling was applied to calculate the critical acceleration of slopes in the study area, which serve as measurement of slope stability under seismic load. The assessment of earthquake-triggered landslide hazard was conducted by comparing these critical accelerations with the distribution of known PGA values. The study area was classified into zones of five levels of landslide hazard: high, moderate high, moderate, light, and very light. Comparison shows that the resulting landslide hazard zones agree with the actual distribution of earthquake-triggered landslides. Nearly 70% of landslides are located in areas of high and moderately high hazard, which occupy only 17% of the study region. This paper demonstrates that using PGA, combined with the analysis of seismic landslide susceptibility, allows a reliable assessment of earthquake-triggered landslides hazards. An urban water supply network (WSN) is a crucial lifeline system that helps to maintain the normal functioning of modern society. However, the hydraulic analysis of a significantly damaged WSN that suffers from pipe breaks or leaks remains challenging. In this paper, a probability-based framework is proposed to assess the functionality of WSNs in the aftermath of powerful earthquakes. The serviceability of the WSN is quantified by using a comprehensive index that considers nodal water flow and nodal pressure. This index includes a coefficient that reflects the relative importance of these two parameters. The demand reduction (DR) method, which reduces the water flow of nodes while preventing the negative pressure of nodes, is proposed. The difference between the negative pressure elimination (NPE) method and the DR method is discussed by using the example of a WSN in a medium-sized city in China. The functionality values of the WSN are 0.76 and 0.99 when nodal pressure and nodal demands are used respectively as the index of system serviceability at an intensity level that would pertain to an earthquake considered to occur at a maximum level. When the intensity of ground motion is as high as 0.4 g, the DR method requires fewer samples than the NPE method to obtain accurate results. Large earthquakes frequently occurred and caused substantial damage and losses in Chinese densely populated urban areas. It is worth clarifying that the existing earthquake loss assessment tools in China do not consider its special characteristics (e.g., tectonics, geology and building inventory). In this paper, an integrated framework for earthquake loss assessment in China is proposed and a geographic information system (GIS)-based system, referred to as China Earthquake Disaster Loss Assessment System, is developed. The individual building is considered as the basic geographical unit and described in three levels (i.e., basic attributes, structural performance parameters, and functional parameters. A three-step data collection method is proposed, and the mobile GIS-based field collection tool is developed. A broad, reasonable, and upgradeable building typology is then presented for the seismic fragility assessment of building blocks. A new economic loss model and casualty model are also presented by considering the characteristics of economics and population. The proposed methodology is implemented in Baqiao District, and the estimation of economic losses and casualties under a scenario earthquake is discussed, which can provide information for urban disaster risk assessment and mitigation. The great M ~ 8 1920 Haiyuan earthquake (HYEQ) was one of the largest and most deadly earthquakes in China in the last century, with ~ 234,000 deaths. The earthquake occurred within the Loess Plateau of northern China, where Quaternary loess deposits form a distinctive blanket across the landscape. Large regions of this loess cover experienced co-seismic landslides. Based on an analysis of the original disaster reports, field surveys, and satellite image interpretation, we have compiled the shaking effects of the earthquake, including the distribution of landslides, fatalities, and structural damage. Landslides triggered by the HYEQ (n > 7,000) are concentrated south of the Haiyuan fault, in a region that has both thick loess cover and long-term relief generated by the drainage network. This distribution is spatially separated from landslides triggered by other earthquakes. We find that in contrast to previous studies, the most important factor in the severe death toll of the HYEQ was the collapse of housing by ground shaking, including collapse of loess house-caves. Landslides were a secondary factor; although up to 32,000 deaths occurred in areas with intense landsliding. Based on the revised distribution pattern of landslides and damage (e.g., house collapses), we suggest that the isoseismal intensity IX line extends south of previous locations. We have also identified 126 dammed lakes created by co-seismic landslides, which form major modifications of this semi-arid landscape. This research aims to explore detailed spatial distribution characteristics, identify key factors weight, and establish an accurate susceptibility regionalization model of coseismic landslides by the Mw 6.6 Iburi, Japan, earthquake sequence of 6 September 2018. Based on the remote sensing interpretation database, 5,977 individual coseismic landslides were delineated, which occupies an area of about 15.26 km2. The relationship between eight key factors and spatial distribution of coseismic landslides were precisely analyzed by the landslide area density (LAD) and landslide point density (LPD) curves. In order to obtain the weight of eight key factors more accurately, this paper compares the similarities and differences of the two curves in the earthquakes with similar magnitude, which was included the Lushan and Jiuzhaigou earthquake in China. According to the weight of eight key factors, the improved weight of evidence method was used to produce the susceptibility regionalization map of coseismic landslides in the Iburi earthquake. The results show that the improved weight of evidence method has better precision and can provide a scientific coseismic landslides susceptibility regionalization map for disaster prevention and mitigation in the Iburi earthquake. Geofluids from natural springs connect with the crust and/or mantle in many cases, and their geochemical anomalies could be significant for the study on faults activity and even earthquakes. Several natural springs are distributed along the Lenglongling fault zone (LLLFZ) in the northeastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau, where the M s 6.9 Menyuan earthquake occurred on January 8th, 2022. Based on chemical and isotopic compositions (δD, δ18O, δ13C, and 3He/4He) of water and gas samples, the origin of geofluids and their potential correlation with fault activity even including earthquakes are preliminarily assessed in this paper. The δ13C CO2 values and 3He/4He ratios showed that the gas originating from the crust was associated with the metamorphism of carbonate rocks, whereas the δ18O and δD values of water samples indicated that the natural springs were predominantly infiltrated with precipitations from local mountains ranging 3.7 - 5.5 km in height. Obvious changes of Ca2+ and HCO 3 − concentrations in SZK spring waters in the surface rupture zones were observed in a short period (about three months) after the main shock, in contrast to those of the GSK springs far from the surface rupture zones. Such variations might be correlated with the stress increase prior to the 2022 Menyuan M s 6.9 earthquake. The mechanical fracturing of surrounding limestone rocks during the slipping movement of LLLF could facilitate the water-rock interactions. Compared to three-month observations after the main shock, relatively higher concentrations of HCO 3 − and heavier δ18O H 2 O values of the LHG springs were also observed in the short-term period. The shallow stored formation water might be squeezed along the cracks and rose to the surface during earthquake tremors, causing a sandblasting water phenomenon. • Ionic concentration of spring water showed anomalies with Menyuan M S 6.9 earthquake. • Two distinct causes of hydro-chemical anomalies revealed. • Bubbling CO 2 originated mainly from metamorphic and weathering carbonate in the crust. The role of the paired assistance policy (PAP) in facilitating recovery after the Wenchuan earthquake in China on 12 May 2008 is best analysed from a network perspective. This paper makes five assumptions to explore the relationship, and then draws on three additional cases to examine them. The key findings support all five assumptions. First, the interactions of authority compliance initiated the PAP, and second, the interactions of resource input significantly contributed to rapid reconstruction following the earthquake. Third, the interactions of knowledge transfer supported social system recovery, and fourth, the interactions of benefit reciprocity laid the foundation for sustainable recovery. Fifth, by contrast, the interactions of performance comparison caused suboptimal overfunding of particular public infrastructure projects and reduced local self‐reliance to some extent. Finally, suggestions are made to improve the policy implications of extending the use of the PAP in other administrative contexts. China is a country where 100% of the territory is located in a seismic zone. Most of the strong earthquakes are over prediction. Most fatalities are caused by structural collapse. Earthquakes not only cause severe damage to structures, but can also damage non-structural elements on and inside of facilities. This can halt city life, and disrupt hospitals, airports, bridges, power plants, and other infrastructure. Designers need to use new techniques to protect structures and facilities inside. Isolation, energy dissipation and, control systems are more and more widely used in recent years in China. Currently, there are nearly 6,500 structures with isolation and about 3,000 structures with passive energy dissipation or hybrid control in China. The mitigation techniques are applied to structures like residential buildings, large or complex structures, bridges, underwater tunnels, historical or cultural relic sites, and industrial facilities, and are used for retrofitting of existed structures. This paper introduces design rules and some new and innovative devices for seismic isolation, energy dissipation and hybrid control for civil and industrial structures. Yang et al., Acta Geologica Sinica‐English Edition, 91(2), pp. 749–750 claim that they discovered supercritical hyperpycnal flow deposits in the Early Cretaceous strata on Lingshan Island, East China. We would like to discuss this paper under the following topics: (a) the terminology of "supercritical hyperpycnal flow," (b) hyperpycnal flow deposition, and (c) supercritical flow deposition. Our aim is twofold in that the following debate will help unravel the complexities associated with the controversy around the paleosedimentary environment and sediment dynamic processes of the early Cretaceous deposits on Lingshan Island, in addition to providing an understanding of hyperpycnal flow and supercritical flow deposits. The Beilaishi section deposits on Lingshan Island are more likely storm‐induced tempestites within the lacustrine basin delta front and associated deep lacustrine turbidites. The MS8.0 earthquake that occurred in Wenchuan, Sichuan in 2008 provides an important case for the study of operational earthquake forecasting and short-term aftershock forecasting of major disaster-inducing earthquakes in China. This paper focuses on the comparative study of the applicability of the epidemic-type aftershock sequence (ETAS) model, the Reasenberg–Jones (R–J) model and the Omi–R–J model, which are widely adopted internationally for short-term aftershock forecasting and seismic hazard mitigation strategy research. We compare the stability of model parameters and aftershock occurrence rate forecasting, and evaluate the effectiveness of forecasting using the N-test and T-test with multiple time windows. The results show that the sequence parameters of the ETAS model, the R–J model and the Omi–R–J model tend to stabilize after 15.50, 15.50 and 6.00 days following the earthquake respectively, and the attenuation of the Wenchuan MS8.0 earthquake is rather normal. Compared to the ETAS model and the R–J model, the Omi–R–J model obtain steadier model parameters in a shorter time with significantly smaller parameters pORJ, cORJ, bORJ and standard deviations. Among the three models, the overall aftershock occurrence rate forecasted by the R–J model is the highest, followed by the Omi–R–J model, while that of the ETAS model is the lowest. N-test results show overall forecasting effectiveness of 93.8, 80.7 and 97.7% for the ETAS, R–J and Omi–R–J models, respectively, with the ETAS and Omi–R–J models superior to the R–J model, and the Omi–R–J model slightly better than the ETAS model. The overall "information gain per earthquake" calculation results show that the ETAS model is superior to the Omi–R–J and R–J models, while the Omi–R–J model is better than the R–J model; thus the combined use of the ETAS and Omi–R–J models by focusing on their respective strengths might ensure optimal performance. These "maneuverable" forecasting approaches to short-term aftershock model forecasting will play a vital role in efficient post-disaster relief, emergency management decision-making and post-disaster reconstruction. China suffers severe earthquake disasters along the Pacific Rim. Rapid urbanization, population growth and economic production have dramatically changed China both spatially and temporally. Exposure has increased rapidly compared with hazards and vulnerability, and exposure has increased earthquake risks more than hazards and vulnerability. Based on county-level data, this paper emphasizes the rising exposure of high earthquake risk regions (HERRs) by analyzing the concentration of population and GDP in HERRs. The results reveal three findings. (1) Population and GDP transferred to HERRs from 2000 to 2010. The vast majority of the population growth (88%) and GDP growth (63.8%) occurred in HERRs, and 16.4% of the population growth and 16.4% of the GDP growth occurred in counties where an earthquake of M 7.5 + may take place. (2) The shift of population and GDP growth in East China was more dramatic than that in West, Central and Northeast China. Overall, 56.8% of the population growth and 38.0% of the GDP growth occurred in HERRs in East China. (3) The Theil index showed that the internal population distribution for each region was also distinct. East China had the largest population growth in HERRs but had the most separation among the regions in China. In both 2010 and 2000, East China had the largest internal Theil index. The population and GDP were concentrated in the places with high earthquake risks, especially in the developed areas of East China. And East China had the most internal inequality. • A novel seismic resilience assessment approach of regional HSR is proposed. • Railway operation recovery method is proposed. • Train timetable is rescheduled to maximize the seismic resilience. • Passengers are rerouted to maximize the seismic resilience. Suffer from a destructive earthquake, the normal operation of the high-speed railway (HSR) system would be interrupted, and infrastructure outage and the demand for special trains for disaster relief would both come to the HSR system. The paper proposes a Railway operation Recovery method based on Optimal Resilience after earthquakes (RROR) as a process to improve the operation of the HSR system after earthquakes. It combines train rescheduling and individual passenger rerouting. Based on the maximum capacity of the HSR infrastructure including main tracks and arrival-departure tracks in stations, it formulates the optimal scheme for the rerouting of passengers and rescheduling of the originally planned trains, additional passenger trains, and special trains for disaster relief, and captures the time-related network performance during the post-earthquake recovery period. The rolling horizon approach (RHA) is introduced as a solution to large-scale RROR.
