Dynamical prediction of monsoon rainfall has been an important topic and a long-standing issue in both research and operational community. This paper provides a comprehensive evaluation of the subseasonal-to-seasonal (S2S) prediction skill of the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) rainfall using the hindcast record from the Beijing Climate Center Climate System Model, BCC CSM1.1m, during the period 1983–2019. The model exhibits reasonable skills for predicting the EASM rainfall at all lead times with the skill dropping dramatically from the shortest lead time of about 2 weeks (LM0) to 1-month lead (LM1), and then fluctuating remarkably throughout 2-month to 12-month lead times. Over the EASM domain, the rapid decline of the S2S rainfall prediction skill from LM0 to LM1 is mainly caused by the inferior skills over Central China in July and over Northeast China in August. Composite analysis based on hindcast records suggest that these inferior skills are directly tied to the model's difficulties in capturing above-normal precipitation over eastern Central China and Northeast China in the respective months, which are further shown to be associated with anomalous weakening and meridional movement of the Northwestern Pacific subtropical high and the activity of large-scale teleconnection pattern hard to be predicted over northeastern Asia in summer, respectively. These findings inform the intrinsic limits of the S2S predictability of the EASM rainfall by a dynamical model, and strongly suggest that the level of confidence placed upon S2S forecasts should be stratified by large-scale circulation anomalies known to significantly affect the prediction skill, e.g., the subtropical high and high-latitude teleconnection patterns for summer monsoon rainfall prediction in this region. Climate and climate change have always been a research focus of atmospheric sciences. This paper summaries research efforts, achievements and international contributions of the Chinese scientific community on climate and climate change over the past 70 years. The review is based on papers published officially in national or international scientific journals, and is organized to cover six aspects: (1) general climate studies; (2) impact of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau; (3) impact of the East Asian monsoon; (4) influences of teleconnection oscillation and westerlies; (5) climate dynamics and development of climate models; and (6) climate change. The mid-Pliocene warm period was the most recent geological period in Earth's history that featured long-term warming. Both geological evidence and model results indicate that East Asian summer winds (EASWs) strengthened in monsoonal China, and that East Asian winter winds (EAWWs) weakened in northern monsoonal China during this period, as compared to the pre-industrial period. However, the corresponding mechanisms are still unclear. In this paper, the results of a set of numerical simulations are reported to analyze the effects of changed boundary conditions on the mid-Pliocene East Asian monsoon climate, based on PRISM3 (Pliocene Research Interpretation and Synoptic Mapping) palaeoenvironmental reconstruction. The model results showed that the combined changes of sea surface temperatures, atmospheric CO concentration, and ice sheet extent were necessary to generate an overall warm climate on a large scale, and that these factors exerted the greatest effects on the strengthening of EASWs in monsoonal China. The orographic change produced significant local warming and had the greatest effect on the weakening of EAWWs in northern monsoonal China in the mid-Pliocene. Thus, these two factors both had important but different effects on the monsoon change. In comparison, the effects of vegetational change on the strengthened EASWs and weakened EAWWs were relatively weak. The changed monsoon winds can be explained by a reorganization of the meridional temperature gradient and zonal thermal contrast. Moreover, the effect of orbital parameters cannot be ignored. Results showed that changes in orbital parameters could have markedly affected the EASWs and EAWWs, and caused significant short-term oscillations in the mid-Pliocene monsoon climate in East Asia. The precipitation in China manifests a remarkable quasi-biennial signal. For interannual variability, about 70% stations over China indicate the dominance of a quasi-2-year period. The maximum precipitation variability associated with the quasi-biennial oscillation is located over the Yangtze River valley (YRV) and Huaihe River valley (HRV) as well as South China. This paper attempts to reveal the spatial-temporal evolution of the precipitation in China and related large-scale atmospheric circulation associated with the tropospheric biennial oscillation (TBO) in East Asia by using a season-dependent empirical orthogonal function (S-EOF) analysis approach. The leading two modes of the TBO of summer precipitation in China and associated large-scale circulations are examined by the S-EOF analysis and regression analyses based on the S-EOF time coefficients. The first TBO mode is characterized by an elongated band of positive precipitation anomalies along the YRV and negative precipitation anomalies over both North and South China. The second TBO mode is characterized by an elongated band of positive precipitation anomalies along the HRV and negative precipitation anomalies to the north of the Yellow River and to the south of the Yangtze River, respectively. Meanwhile, the leading modes of the TBO in East Asia may be determined by the meridional teleconnection Rossby wave pattern extending from the WNP to the midlatitudes of East Asia that is forced by the heating source fluctuation over the WNP during boreal summer. And the cold air activity, which is associated with the East Asian winter monsoon, may further influence the leading modes of the TBO through a modulation of the large-scale atmosphere circulation over East Asia during the following boreal summer. Also found is that the TBO in East Aisa depends on both the large-scale air-sea coupling over the tropical Indo-Pacific Ocean regions and the tropical-midlatitude interaction in the western North Pacific (WNP)-East Asia region. A fundamental element for the TBO in East Asia is the WNP monsoon. It is not only an important component of the TBO cycle in the tropics but also serves as a major source of the TBO signal for the subtropical East Asia. The meridional teleconnection Rossby wave train over the WNP-East Asia region acts as a conveyer belt that transports the tropical TBO signal to the midlatitudes of East Asia, and produces the TBO footprints in the large-scale circulation and precipitation in East Asia. Furthermore, the cold air activity over the East Asia during boreal summer also services as an important link in the chain events of the tropical-midlatitude interaction, with enhancing the role of the TBO modes in East Asia. Abstract: In their recent paper, ; Anti-phase oscillation of Asian monsoons during the Younger Dryas period: Evidence from peat cellulose δ13C of Hani, Northeast China, Palaeogeography, Palaeoclimatology, Palaeoecology 297, 214–222) discuss bulk peat sample cellulose δ13C data from a fen in northeast China as a proxy for East Asian summer monsoon intensity during the Late Glacial period. Based on their own results, cited papers, and an extensive re-interpretation of sedimentological and palynological data from nearby Lake Sihailongwan, construct a hypothesis of contrasting moisture conditions in northern and southern China, with wet conditions in the north during the Younger Dryas period and an anti-phase behaviour of Indian- and East Asian summer monsoon intensity. However, we do not approve of the re-interpretation of our Lake Sihailongwan data by and must strongly reject it. We show here that neither the fen data, nor the Lake Sihailongwan data or any other cited data allow for the sound assumption of an intensified East Asian summer monsoon in northeastern China during the Younger Dryas. The Late Glacial variability of the fen data found by can be easily explained by changes in the plant assemblage down core and thus by the composition of the peat. Furthermore, the use of bulk peat cellulose δ13C data as a precipitation proxy remains unproven for that area. Abstract The Eocene was an interval of climate evolution, when the extreme high temperatures of the earliest Cenozoic gave way to a global cooling trend. Fine-grained lacustrine sediments of Eocene age from northeastern China represent an excellent archive to study long-term environmental and climatic changes at high-resolution. The Huadian Basin is a Cenozoic, fault-bounded basin in Jilin Province, northeastern China. Though small in area, it contains numerous oil shale- and coal-bearing layers, which provide an abundant Middle to Late Eocene palynoflora. Eighty-five palynomorph genera and one hundred palynomorph species were identified in the Huadian Formation, allowing to distinguish 4 palynozones. The nearest living relatives of the recovered palynomorph taxa suggest the presence of subtropical evergreen and deciduous broad-leaved forests during deposition of the Huadian Formation. Using the coexistence approach (CA), we calculated seven paleoclimatic parameters, which indicate a subtropical warm and humid climate with a mean annual temperature above 13.6 °C and a mean annual precipitation of at least 887 mm. However, the climate became cooler and drier during the transition from the lower Oil Shale Member to the upper Carbonaceous Shale Member. Palaeoclimatic data from the various Middle and Late Eocene basins of northeastern China (i.e., the Huadian, Fushun, Yilan, Hunchun and Jishu basins) were compared with data from North American and European basins. Middle Eocene climate in the Northern Hemisphere was generally warm and humid, and the mean annual temperature and precipitation in northeastern China were similar to those in North America, though slightly lower than those of Europe. Similar trends in temperature and precipitation on different continents support the existence of a global Mid-Eocene cooling event. This paper is the first systematic study of Middle to Late Eocene seasonality in the Huadian Basin. Our results show an apparent differentiation in both temperature and precipitation between summer and winter, supporting the view that the East Asian Monsoon was established in northeastern China already during the Middle to Late Eocene. This Middle and Late Eocene monsoon was likely driven by the development of Pacific trade winds and an alternating, seasonal high- and low-pressure system over Siberia. The climatic changes observed in our dataset, especially the precipitation changes, appear to have played an important role in controlling oil shale formation in the Huadian Basin. A warmer and more humid climate, with abundant precipitation and high subsidence rates, formed a deeper Huadian depositional lake. High productivity and stable stratification provided the abundant organic matter and favorable preservation conditions necessary for oil shale accumulation. The Salawusu River Valley cuts through the Mu Us Desert in north central China, and lies at the interface of the East Asian Summer and Winter Monsoonal regions. Exposed at numerous locations in the valley side are extensive late Quaternary deposits, consisting of interbedded aeolian sands, fluvio-lacustrine units and palaeosols. Due to the importance of the location in potentially elucidating both summer and winter monsoonal regimes, and the quality of the sedimentary record, the region has a rich history of study, and yet even within the Holocene sequence, many conflicting interpretations have arisen based on studies on different sections. This paper aims to synthesize and explore these differences by exploring the lateral continuity of the Holocene sequences along a ~ 45 km reach of the valley, and presenting new, detailed physical and geochemical analyses of three sections, focusing on the lacustrine Holocene Dagouwan Formation. The absence of the lacustrine unit at several locations confirms that rather than representing a single lake, the Dagouwan Formation instead represents a series of palaeolakes, probably at least partially hydrologically isolated from each other by aeolian sands. All begin with sand-dominated deposits during the early−/mid-Holocene, which is interpreted as the result of abundant sand-supply to the north and west, under the influence of an enhanced East Asian Winter Monsoon, and all switch to silt-dominated, more carbonate-rich deposits during the mid−/late-Holocene, which is attributed to an enhanced East Asian Summer Monsoon bringing loessic silts from the Chinese Loess Plateau to the east and south. The timing of this change, perhaps as late as 5.5 ka, supports the idea of a relatively enhancement late mid-Holocene of the summer monsoonal circulation in the region. However, despite the proximity of the sections and consistent analytical approaches, marked differences between the sections occur in all proxies studied. The timing and rate of the switch from sand- to silt-dominated lacustrine deposition varies between the sites by as much as 2000 years within just a few kilometres of each other, and at some sites the switch was gradual, whereas at others it was very rapid. Similar dramatic variations are also seen with organic carbon content, carbonate content, C:N ratio, and especially the δ13C isotopic ratio. These point to the lake basins behaving very differently, and emphasize that consideration must be given to the local geomorphology and palaeolimnological evolution of individual sections. • Differences in lacustrine Holocene monsoon records in northern China are explored. • The occurrence of the lakes is geomorphologically, not climatologically, controlled. • Different sections of similar units represent different lakes with varied histories. • Consistent changes in sediment suggest mid-Holocene decline of winter monsoon. • Study of individual sections or proxies cannot be used to infer regional climate. Numerous insects including pests and beneficial species undertake windborne migrations over hundreds of kilometers. In East Asia, climate-induced changes in large-scale atmospheric circulation systems are affecting wind-fields and precipitation zones and these, in turn, are changing migration patterns. We examined the consequences in a serious rice pest, the brown planthopper (BPH, Nilaparvata lugens) in East China. BPH cannot overwinter in temperate East Asia, and infestations there are initiated by several waves of windborne spring or summer migrants originating from tropical areas in Indochina. The East Asian summer monsoon, characterized by abundant rainfall and southerly winds, is of critical importance for these northward movements. We analyzed a 42-year dataset of meteorological parameters and catches of BPH from a standardized network of 341 light-traps in South and East China. We show that south of the Yangtze River during summer, southwesterly winds have weakened and rainfall increased, while the summer precipitation has decreased further north on the Jianghuai Plain. Together, these changes have resulted in shorter migratory journeys for BPH leaving South China. As a result, pest outbreaks of BPH in the key rice-growing area of the Lower Yangtze River Valley (LYRV) have declined since 2001. We show that these changes to the East Asian summer monsoon weather parameters are driven by shifts in the position and intensity of the Western Pacific subtropical high (WPSH) system that have occurred during the last 20 years. As a result, the relationship between WPSH intensity and BPH immigration that was previously used to predict the size of the immigration to the LYRV has now broken down. Our results demonstrate that migration patterns of a serious rice pest have shifted in response to the climate-induced changes in precipitation and wind pattern, with significant consequences for the population management of migratory pests. The generalized complementary relationship (CR) of evaporation was investigated in the irrigated winter wheat/summer maize double‐cropping sites in North China Plain (NCP), a region influenced by the East Asian dry winter and wet summer monsoon. Different generalized CRs exist in the winter wheat (dry) and summer maize (wet) seasons with abrupt changes in June and October. The seasonal abrupt change in the CR is attributed to the sudden reversed water vapor transport with the winter and summer monsoon and the wheat/maize rotation with irrigation in the winter wheat season. The separation and abrupt change in the complementary behavior require that two‐stage phased parameters corresponding to the wheat (dry) and maize (wet) seasons should be adopted by the generalized complementary functions for operational evaporation estimation in the irrigated double cropping NCP. Plain Language Summary: The irrigated double cropping North China Plain (NCP) is characterized with rapid winter wheat/summer maize rotation on the land surface and sudden reversed water vapor transport in the upper‐air with East Asian monsoon, coincidentally in June and October. There are corresponding abrupt changes of the complementary relationship, a theory relating changes in landscape evaporation and atmospheric evaporation demand. In the East Asian monsoon region, eolian deposits widely distributed in the middle-lower reaches of the Yantgze River are among the best materials available for studies on Quaternary climate change in the subtropical zone of Southern China. Typical eolian deposits in this region include upper Xiashu Loess (XL) and underlying Vermiculated Red Soil (VRS) layers. In this paper, chronological and paleoclimatic studies are conducted on an eolian deposit sequence near Jiujiang (JJ) city in northern Jiangxi province. A magnetostratigraphic study, combined with optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating, is conducted on the JJ section and provides further evidence that eolian deposits in the middle-lower reaches of the Yangtze River have been formed since the late Early Pleistocene, and that the boundary age between the XL and VRS layers is about 300-400 kaBP. In grain-size records of the JJ section, the median grain-size and content of the >30 μm size fraction increase sharply after 300-400 kaBP, representing an East Asian winter monsoon intensification event. Further pollen analysis reveals differing pollen assemblages before and after 300-400 kaBP: there is an evident increase in plants adapted to grow in a warm humid environment after 300-400 kaBP, implying an increase in precipitation caused by intensification of the East Asian summer monsoon. Global ice volume and uplift of the Tibet Plateau (TP) are regarded as crucial factors influencing variations of the East Asian monsoon on a long-term scale. The deep-sea δ18O record, which reflects variations in global ice volume, shows no obvious change after 300-400 kaBP. Moreover, the influence of global ice volume changes on the East Asian summer and winter monsoons is inverse; the global ice volume increase (decrease) implies a strengthened (weakened) winter monsoon and weakened (strengthened) summer monsoon. We therefore interpret the coupled intensifications of the East Asian summer and winter monsoons at about 300-400 kaBP to the uplift of the TP in the Middle Pleistocene. This climate event is also documented in eolian deposits from the southern margin of the Chinese Loess Plateau (CLP) and from the desert-loess transitional belt. However, it is not recorded in the loess-paleosol sequences from the central part of the CLP, thereby indicating differing climate responses to TP uplift in different regions, which requires further study. Under the influence of glacial-interglacial climate change and regional tectonic activities in the Quaternary, the sedimentary environments of the Bohai Sea changed greatly, providing significant information on transgression-regression events, East Asian monsoon changes and regional tectonic activities. This study analyzed the sedimentological characteristics of the BH1302 core (water depth of 12.3 m, length of 70.2 m) in the southern Bohai Sea based on grain size, foraminiferal assemblages, carbon and oxygen isotopes in foraminiferal shells and element geochemistry, and established a chronological framework based on AMS 14C, optically stimulated luminescence dating and Oxcal age-depth model using Bayesian modeling. The results showed that three interglacial transgressions and one interstadial transgression were revealed in BH1302 since the late Quaternary, corresponding to marine isotope stages (MIS) 7, 5, 3 and 1, and three subinterglacial transgressions were further identified during MIS 7. The sedimentary environments of Laizhou Bay transitioned from an estuary environment dominated by rivers to a neritic environment dominated by marine conditions because of subsidence of the Miaodao uplift in late MIS 7.1. Three subinterstadial transgressions occurred in both MIS5 with two subinterstadial in MIS 3, and the highstand sea level of MIS 3 reached approximately −18 ∼ −21 m. Under the influence of sea level fluctuations and the East Asian monsoon, the sedimentary environments of MIS 1 can be divided into a low salinity tidal-flat environment (12.0–7.0 kyr BP), a low salinity neritic environment (7.0–4.5 kyr BP) and a modern neritic environment (∼4.5 kyr BP). • The isotopes in the foraminifera shells have good indications to the impact of freshwater input on the neritic environments. • Except for 4 interglacial transgressions, the paper further identifies 3 sub-interglacial transgressions in the MIS7 period. Eastern China is perennially hit by mesoscale convective systems (MCSs), yet it remains an open question as to whether and how their general properties change throughout the annual cycle. By leveraging high‐resolution satellite observations and a hybrid tracking algorithm, we present a 20‐year (2001–2020) climatology of MCSs over eastern China during eight subseasonal‐to‐seasonal (S2S) monsoon stages. MCSs contribute up to 50% of the stage‐total precipitation and over 60% of the rainband‐zone precipitation during the Pre‐Meiyu and Meiyu episodes, and their contributions remain non‐trivial during the transition seasons. We discover two contrasting regimes of MCSs that alternate immediately upon the Pre‐Meiyu and the Fall onsets. The wintertime regime features fast‐propagating shallow systems initiated at night in a strongly sheared and dry environment. The summertime regime, instead, features an outbreak of MCSs in the south, where the systems often initiate in the afternoon and propagate 2–3 times slower than the cold‐season ones. Based on multivariate clustering analysis, the nighttime MCSs that dictate the winter stages often initiate over a deep nocturnal boundary layer with moist rear inflows upgliding above it. In contrast, the afternoon‐initiated MCSs under the summertime regime feature a pronounced convective available potential energy (CAPE) "tongue" and upslope flows in their southeast quadrant. The southwesterly moist ascending flows are likely to shallow the convective inhibition at the tip of the CAPE tongue and facilitate the intense updrafts of the MCSs. Findings here may offer insights into S2S weather prediction and facilitate agricultural and water management throughout the year. Many of these hazards result from intense and well‐organized rainstorms, also known as mesoscale convective systems (MCSs), typically lasting for several hours with a horizontal scale of 100 km or larger. Despite numerous case studies on their evolution and dynamics, the annual cycle of the impacts and properties of MCSs is yet to be fully understood. Using high‐resolution satellite observations and a hybrid tracking algorithm, we present a 20‐year (2001–2020) climatology of MCSs in eight monsoon stages year‐round. We discover a dual regime wherein two distinct regimes of MCS characteristics are observed throughout the annual cycle. It turns out that MCSs can contribute up to 50% of the stage‐total precipitation and over 60% of the rainband‐zone precipitation during the pluvial episodes, and their contributions remain non‐trivial during the transition seasons. The prevailing environmental conditions at the initiation of MCSs are revealed and discussed. Findings from the present study help broaden our understanding of the annual cycle of MCSs and may offer insights into numerical weather simulations and prediction, water and agricultural management, and disaster risk reduction in eastern China. Abstract: Loess deposits in the Eastern Qinling Mountains (central China) provide a detailed archive for reconstructing the paleoenvironment during early hominin occupation. The study of the loess deposits also provides a unique opportunity to understand Pleistocene atmospheric circulation in this transitional climatic zone. However, the provenance and formation of the loess deposits were not well understood until now. In this paper, we report on new geomorphologic investigations and depositional analyses of the loess deposits. The results suggest that Gobi deserts and drylands in northern and northwestern China were one of the dust sources. These loess deposits show similar geochemical composition as the average upper crust (UCC), and may indicate that they experienced multiple sedimentary processes, with the dust being well mixed before deposition. However, the higher 87Sr/86Sr ratios (between 0.719650 and 0.721043) and extremely low ɛNd(0) values (between −11.98 and −18.97), which are different from the typical loess of the Chinese Loess Plateau, demonstrate that proximal clastic sediments that were apparently derived from the weathered Qinling orogen bedrocks, form the other important source for the loess deposits. The chemical Index of Alteration [CIA = Al2O3/(Al2O3 + CaO* + Na2O + K2O) × 100] and Chemical Proxy of Alteration [CPA = 100 × Al2O3/(Al2O3 + Na2O)], both in molar proportions show that the loess has experienced intense pedogenesis. We conclude that the loess deposit has a mixed provenance. The palaeoclimate in the Eastern Qinling Mountains remained mild in the glacial periods due to the topography and unique geographic locations, providing a suitable place for hominine occupation. The East Asian monsoon (EAM) has experienced significant changes over the past 10,000 years that influenced East Asian agricultural development. However, the magnitude and extent of the EAM precipitation fluctuations at 6 ka remain unresolved, owing to uncertainty in individual lake records and substantial variations in the expansion limits in simulations of the mid-Holocene EAM precipitation. Here we present an approach based on multiple lake-level records using the "1D lake level—2D lake area—3D catchment hydrology" model to reconstruct the precipitation patterns in northern China, and to further quantify the extent of the EAM precipitation expansion in the mid-Holocene relative to today. The precipitation reconstructions suggest an ~550–1100 km northward expansion and an ~530–840 km westward migration of the EAM at 6 ka. At that time, the EAM precipitation domain covered over 6 million square kilometers. Thus, this approach mitigates the uncertainty and arbitrariness of reconstructions of the limit of the EAM precipitation fields and provides a benchmark for future climate modeling studies. BACKGROUND: The fall armyworm (FAW), an invasive pest from the Americas, is rapidly spreading through the Old World, and has recently invaded the Indochinese Peninsula and southern China. In the Americas, FAW migrates from winter‐breeding areas in the south into summer‐breeding areas throughout North America where it is a major pest of corn. Asian populations are also likely to evolve migrations into the corn‐producing regions of eastern China, where they will pose a serious threat to food security. RESULTS: To evaluate the invasion risk in eastern China, the rate of expansion and future migratory range was modelled by a trajectory simulation approach, combined with flight behavior and meteorological data. Our results predict that FAW will migrate from its new year‐round breeding regions into the two main corn‐producing regions of eastern China (Huang‐Huai‐Hai Summer Corn and Northeast Spring Corn Regions), via two pathways. The western pathway originates in Myanmar and Yunnan, and FAW will take four migration steps (i.e. four generations) to reach the Huang‐Huai‐Hai Region by July. Migration along the eastern pathway from Indochina and southern China progresses faster, with FAW reaching the Huang‐Huai‐Hai Region in three steps by June and reaching the Northeast Spring Region in July. CONCLUSION: Our results indicate that there is a high risk that FAW will invade the major corn‐producing areas of eastern China via two migration pathways, and cause significant impacts to agricultural productivity. The impact of global warming on the climate of northern China has been investigated intensively, and the behavior of the East Asian monsoon during previous intervals of climatic warming may provide insight into future changes. In this study, we use paleovegetation records from loess and lake sediments in the marginal zone of the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) to reconstruct the EASM during the interval of warming from the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) to the Holocene. The results show that during the LGM, desert steppe or dry steppe dominated much of northern China; in addition, the southeastern margin of the deserts east of the Helan Mountains had a distribution similar to that of the present-day, or was located slightly further south, due to the cold and dry climate caused by a strengthened East Asian winter monsoon (EAWM) and weakened EASM. During the last deglaciation, with the strengthening of the EASM and concomitant weakening of the EAWM, northern China gradually became humid. However, this trend was interrupted by abrupt cooling during the Heinrich 1 (H1) and Younger Dryas (YD) events. The EASM intensified substantially during the Holocene, and the monsoon rain belt migrated at least 300 km northwestwards, which led to the substantial shrinking of the desert area in the central and eastern part of northern China, and to the large expansion of plants favored by warm and humid conditions. Paleoclimatic records from the marginal zone of the EASM all show that the EASM reached its peak in the mid-Holocene, and past global climatic warming significantly strengthened the EASM, thereby greatly improving the ecological environment in northern China. Thus, northern China is expected to become wetter as global warming continues. Finally, high resolution Holocene vegetation records are sparse compared with the numerous records on the orbital timescale, and there is a need for more studies of Holocene climatic variability on the centennial-to-decadal scale. Urban land use in East China has undergone considerable change since the 1990s. How such change affects both in situ and remote climate conditions is investigated through numerical modelling experiments with the Community Atmosphere Model Version 5.1. The results show that urbanization causes an increase in surface temperature due to reduced surface albedo but a decrease in specific humidity due to locally reduced surface evaporation. The change in specific humidity overwhelms the surface temperature change effect, leading to locally reduced precipitation. It is noted that urbanization causes changes in climate conditions not only locally but also remotely. Anomalous low-level divergence associated with the reduced precipitation in situ prevents the northward progression of the East Asian summer monsoon. As a result, the major monsoon rain band is strengthened and confined over South China and the tropical Asian monsoon zone along 12°–25°N. The increase of rainfall in the tropical zone, on one hand, induces the local overturning cell, leading to anomalous subsidence over mid-latitude Asia and the equatorial zone, and, on the other hand, perturbs the Subtropical Jet, generating a Rossby wave train disseminating along the Jet. The topography and continental configuration of East Asia favor the year-round existence of storm tracks that extend thousands of kilometers from China into the northwestern Pacific Ocean, producing zonally elongated patterns of rainfall that we call "frontal rain events." In spring and early summer (known as "Meiyu Season"), frontal rainfall intensifies and shifts northward during a series of stages collectively known as the East Asian summer monsoon. Using a technique called the Frontal Rain Event Detection Algorithm, we create a daily catalog of all frontal rain events in east China during 1951-2007, quantify their attributes, and classify all rainfall on each day as either frontal, resulting from largescale convergence, or nonfrontal, produced by local buoyancy, topography, or typhoons. Our climatology shows that the East Asian summer monsoon consists of a series of coupled changes in frontal rain event frequency, latitude, and daily accumulation. Furthermore, decadal changes in the amount and distribution of rainfall in east China are overwhelmingly due to changes in frontal rainfall. We attribute the "South Flood-North Drought" pattern observed beginning in the 1980s to changes in the frequency of frontal rain events, while the years 1994-2007 witnessed an uptick in event daily accumulation relative to the rest of the study years. This particular signature may reflect the relative impacts of global warming, aerosol loading, and natural variability on regional rainfall, potentially via shifting the East Asian jet stream. The Northeastern China involves complex interactions between the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) circulation and the polar climate system, and plays a significant role as the bridge communicating low- and high-latitude climatic processes. High-resolution multi-proxy analysis of a robust accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) 14C dated lacustrine sediment core recovered from Jingpo Lake in Northeastern China provides a detailed history of EASM variability and vegetation changes since ~5100 cal. yr BP. The period from ~5100 to 3600 cal. yr BP was characterized by the highest pollen percentages of Quercus, Ulmus, Juglans and Corylopsis; low Md (median grain size diameter); and high δ13Corg values, reflecting a relatively warm and humid period. The period between ~3600 and 2100 cal. yr BP is characterized by high Md and low δ13Corg values, and a rapid increase in pollen percentages of herbs, indicating cool and dry climatic conditions. From ~2100 to 150 cal. yr BP, a gradual increase in δ13Corg values and low Md values, and a rapid increase in Carpinus, Juglans and Corylopsis pollen percentages was observed, indicating climate change towards warmer and wetter conditions. After ~150 cal. yr BP, the highest values of total organic carbon mass accumulation rate (TOC-MAR), total nitrogen mass accumulation rate (TN-MAR) and magnetic susceptibility suggesting that the Jingpo Lake region has been severely affected by human activities. The EASM variability in Northeastern China during the mid- to late Holocene shows trends similar to EASM records in China. Furthermore, our findings indicate that the variability of the EASM during the mid- to late Holocene on the multi-decadal to centennial scale was forced by changes in both solar output and oceanic–atmospheric circulation interaction. This review provides a synopsis of the major progress that has been made in monsoon studies in China and to further bridge the gap between the Chinese and international meteorological community. It consists of seven major sections. After the introduction, the second section begins with the global monsoon systems and their seasonal variation, based on some new methods proposed in recent years. Besides, some major intraseasonal features of East Asian monsoon, including the onset of South China Sea summer monsoon are discussed. In the third section, we review the interactions between ENSO and the East Asian monsoon, focusing in particular on the results of Chinese meteorologists that indicate the influence of ENSO on the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) is obviously different from that on the tropical monsoon. Besides the tropical Pacific, other ocean basins, such as the Indian Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean, are also important to the East Asian monsoon, and this topic is discussed in the fourth section. In the fifth section, we address the role of land surface processes in East Asian monsoon. For example, we describe work that has shown more snow cover in spring on the Tibetan Plateau is followed by a weakened EASM and more summer rainfall in the Yangtze River valleys. The sixth section focuses on the influence of atmospheric circulation in the Southern Hemisphere (SH) on EASM, demonstrating how the signal from the SH is likely to provide new clues for the seasonal forecasting of summer rainfall in China. Finally, in the seventh section, we concentrate on the interdecadal variations of EASM. In particular, we look at a significant interdecadal variation that occurred at the end of the 1970s, and how our understanding of this feature could affect forecasting ability. An interactive system coupling the Beijing Climate Center atmospheric general circulation model (BCC_AGCM2.0.1) and the Canadian Aerosol Module (CAM) with updated aerosol emission sources was developed to investigate the global distributions of optical properties and direct radiative forcing (DRF) of typical aerosols and their impacts on East Asian climate. The simulated total aerosol optical depth (AOD), single scattering albedo, and asymmetry parameter were generally consistent with the ground-based measurements. Under all-sky conditions, the simulated global annual mean DRF at the top of the atmosphere was −2.03 W m for all aerosols including sulfate, organic carbon (OC), black carbon (BC), dust, and sea salt; the global annual mean DRF was −0.23 W m for sulfate, BC, and OC aerosols. The sulfate, BC, and OC aerosols led to decreases of 0.58° and 0.14 mm day in the JJA means of surface temperature and precipitation rate in East Asia. The differences of land-sea surface temperature and surface pressure were reduced in East Asian monsoon region due to these aerosols, thus leading to the weakening of East Asian summer monsoon. Atmospheric dynamic and thermodynamic were affected due to the three types of aerosol, and the southward motion between 15°N and 30°N in lower troposphere was increased, which slowed down the northward transport of moist air carried by the East Asian summer monsoon, and moreover decreased the summer monsoon precipitation in south and east China. An absolute-dated, bi-decadal-resolution, stalagmite oxygen-isotopic time series from Shigao Cave reveals the evolution of summer monsoon precipitation over the past 9.9 ka BP in northern Guizhou Province, Southwest China. The δO-inferred climate conditions are divisible into three distinct stages: (1) a maximum humid era from 9.9-6.6 ka BP; (2) a gradual declining precipitation interval between 6.6-1.6 ka BP; and (3) a relatively low precipitation time window after 1.6 ka BP. Consistency of contemporaneous stalagmite Holocene δO records between Shigao and other caves in the Indian and East Asian monsoon realms support the effect of primary orbital solar forcings on monsoonal precipitation. However, statistical analysis shows a significant spatial asynchroneity of the Holocene Optimum termination in the Asian monsoon territory. The Holocene Optimum ended at 7.2-7.4 ka BP in Oman, located in the Indian monsoon region, and at 5.6-5.8 ka BP in Central China, in the East Asian monsoon zone. In Southwest China, the termination occurred between these periods, at 6.6-7.0 ka BP, and was influenced by both monsoon systems. We propose that this spatially asynchronous ending of Holocene Optimum in Asia may be attributed to sea surface temperature changes in the western tropical Pacific, which is a primary moisture source for the East Asian monsoon. The pattern of Holocene palaeoclimatic change in arid-semiarid northern China is debated. The terminal Huangqihai Lake is located at the northern margin of the modern East Asian summer monsoon and sensitive to climate change. We present here a sedimentary section from Huangqihai lake basin which comprises lacustrine and fluvial deposits and is about 8–9 m above the present lake level. Quartz optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating was employed to construct the chronology of the section. Based on the OSL chronology and the sedimentological and granulometric analysis, we conclude that (1) the Huangqihai Lake experienced a humid climate during the early part of the Holocene (from c. 10.2 ± 1.0 to 6.7 ± 0.7 ka) with a persistent and stable high lake level; (2) the lake level began to decline indicating aridification between 8.7 ± 0.8 ka and 6.7 ± 0.7 ka, and the climate was drier and variable after 6.7 ± 0.7 ka compared with that of before; (3) from 2.2 ± 0.2 to 0.93 ± 0.07 ka the climatic conditions were highly variable and continuously deteriorating, and the lake was turned into a playa for most of the time. The causal correlation or linkage between the East Asian Monsoon (EAM) intensity and rise/fall of Chinese dynasties recently proposed by high-resolution paleoclimate reconstructions is examined in detail. Aside from many exceptions to the correlation, both instrumental and historical climate records show strong spatial variations of rainfall on annual-to-decadal scales over eastern China. The relationship between rainfall and EAM intensity also exhibits regional disparity. These observations suggest: (1) Taking paleo-proxy records from a single locality in eastern China to imply changes in drought/wetness as to affect the cultural and political history of China is fraught with uncertainty. (2) On annual-to-decadal scales, the thesis that δ18O in speleothems can be used as a proxy for the EAM strength lacks empirical underpinnings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study employs a multiproxy approach in the reconstruction of Holocene monsoon history from sedimentary sequences obtained from the Pearl River Estuary, southern China. A set of modern surface sediment samples were collected within and outside the estuary, and a sediment core was obtained from the mouth of the estuary. A range of modern environmental variables were recorded including water salinity (summer, winter and annual average) and water depth. The diatom results show a good relationship with water salinity, with marine diatoms dominating the more distal samples from outside the main estuary and freshwater diatoms dominating the proximal samples influenced by higher freshwater flux. This pattern is matched by the bulk organic carbon isotopes. The isotope values vary between -21.1±0.3‰ for samples from the fully marine environment, between -23.2±0.8‰ and -23.7±0.8‰ for samples from the mid to outer estuary brackish water environment and less than -24.7±1.3‰ for samples from the inner estuary close to the freshwater sources. Similarly, the C/N ratios vary from below 7±0.6 in the marine end-members to over 14.8±3.0 in the freshwater end-members. Both the diatom and carbon data from the sediment core reveal a significant increase in freshwater flux from 8500 cal. yr BP resulting from the enhanced summer monsoon regime in early Holocene. The strength of freshwater flux reached its highest between 7500 and 6000 cal. yr BP. The mid-Pleistocene vermiculated red soils (VRS) from Xuancheng (Anhui Province) and Bose (Guangxi) are studied through soil micromorphological, mineralogical and chemical approaches. The results indicate a polygenetic nature of the VRS, having experienced multiple soil-forming stages. Three main stages have been recognized, attributable to distinct climate regimes. They include the formation of the homogeneous matrix of a red soil (stage 1), development of the white veins within the soil profile (stage 2), and formation of juxtaposed textural features (stage 3). The white veins, resulting from iron-depletion in the groundmass of the homogeneous matrix of a red soil, required abundant rainfall without significant seasonal desiccations. The geographically widely spread VRS south of the Yangtze River in China implies a Mid-Pleistocene extreme East Asian summer monsoon. Annual cycle is fundamental in the East Asian monsoon (EAM) systems, profoundly governing the spatiotemporal distribution of the East Asian rainfall. The present study identified the dominant modes of the annual cycle in the East Asian rainfall based on the Fourier harmonic analysis and the Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF) decomposition. We evaluated the performance of the first two leading modes (i.e., EOF-1 and EOF-2) in historical experiments (1979–2014) of the 21 released climate models of phase six of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6). Comparing with the observation, although the CMIP6 models yield the essential fidelity, they still show considerable systematic biases in the amplitude and phase of the annual cycle, especially in east and south China. Most models exhibit substantial phase delays in the EOF-2 mode of the annual cycle. Some specific models (BCC-ESM1, CanESM5, and GFDL-CM4) exhibiting better performance could capture the observed annual cycle and the underlying physics in climatology and interannual variability. The limited fidelity of the EOF-2 mode of the EAM annual cycle primarily hinders the monsoon variability simulation and thus the reliable future projection. Therefore, the dominant modes of the EAM annual cycle act as the evaluate benchmark in the EAM modelling framework.
