Due to the 'double-clutch' mating system found in the arctic-breeding Little Stint Calidris minuta, each parent cafes for a clutch and brood alone. The resulting constraint on feeding time, combined with the cold climate and a small body size, may cause energetic bottlenecks. Based on the notion that mass stores in birds serve as an 'insurance' for transient periods of negative energy balance, but entail certain costs as well, body mass may vary in relation to climatic conditions and stage of the breeding cycle. We studied body mass in Little Stints in relation to breeding stage and geographical location, during 17 expeditions to 12 sites in the Eurasian Arctic, ranging from north Norway to north-east Taimyr. Body mass was higher during incubation than during chick-rearing. Structural size, as estimated by wing length, increased with latitude. This was probably caused by relatively more females (the larger sex) incubating further north, possibly after leaving a first clutch to be incubated by a male further south. Before and after correction for structural size, body mass was strongly related to latitude during both incubation and chick-rearing. In analogy to a similar geographical pattern in overwintering shorebirds, we interpret the large energy stores of breeding Little Stints as an insurance against periods of cold weather which are a regular feature of arctic summers. Climate data showed that the risk of encountering cold spells lasting several days increases with latitude over the species' breeding range, and is larger in June than in July. Maintaining these stores is therefore less necessary at southern sites and during the chick-rearing period than in the incubation period. When guarding chicks, feeding time is less constrained than during incubation, temperatures tend to be higher than in the incubation period, reducing energy expenditure, and the availability of insect prey reaches a seasonal maximum. However, the alternative interpretation that the chick-tending period is more energetically stressful than the incubation period, resulting in a negative energy balance for the parent, could not be rejected on the present evidence.

In 1999, seven dark-bellied brent geese Branta bemicla bemicla were followed during spring migration from western Europe to Arctic Russia using satellite telemetry. For six of the birds we were also able to monitor their summer stay at the Taimyr Peninsula, and for five birds part of their autumn migration was recorded. In this article, we report on site use during summer and spring/autumn migration. We also describe migration routes and evaluate general migratory performance during autumn migration.All birds spent the summer within areas covered by the Great Arctic Reserve on the Taimyr Peninsula. None of the birds returned to the wintering area with young, so the sites used during summer were most likely used primarily for moulting. The birds remained at the same sites the whole summer until the start of autumn migration, indicating that the build-up of fuel stores for migration took place at the moulting sites. Autumn migration was conducted in a similar way as spring migration regarding routes and general migratory performance. Site use showed both a relatively large variation between individuals and seasons, as well as some degree of site fidelity as all birds returned for a longer stay in autumn to at least one of the areas they had used formore than two days in spring. Thus the migration of brent geese along the Arctic Ocean cannot be considered as a simple migration system with just a few key sites along the route, but instead it is a complex system with several localities used in different ways by different individuals. Most of the areas used by the satellite-tagged birds were previously known stopover areas, but some of them had not been recognized as being of importance to brent geese before. Most of the stopover areas do not have anykind of formal legal protection. It is suggested that further research should be carried out in the areas identified in this study to evaluate their importance and role in the migratory journeys of dark-bellied brent geese.

Actual predation is rarely observed in the field, and therefore the role of predators is often severely underestimated. Species are limited in their distribution, which is caused not only by predation but also by the anti-predator behaviour that prey-species have developed under the continuous selection pressure of predators. How finely tuned this behaviour can be, is illustrated in this paper by the way in which Dark-bellied Brent Geese play one predator against another. Snowy Owls keep Arctic Foxes at bay, and so in years when lemmings are abundant Brent Geese can safely nest in association with nesting Snowy Owls. However, this is dangerous in years when lemmings are scarce and Snowy Owls revert to a predatory species that can even take adult Brent Geese on the nest. Another, more common, nesting strategy of Brent Geese is to nest inside Herring Gull colonies on small islands. Herring gulls are not a threat to adult geese, but they can take goose eggs as well as taking a particularly high toll by preying on newly hatched goslings. On the other hand, Herring Gulls are probably useful to Brent Geese as indicators of places which will become fox-free islands after the ice break-up. Moreover the gulls provide additional protection against Snowy Owls as well as against other gulls. Furthermore, through fertilisation by their droppings, the gulls provide the nesting geese with high quality grass during the incubation period. Predator activity and abundance in the arctic is largely a factor of lemming abundance. This paper highlights the ideas we have developed about the impact of predators by comparing data on the breeding success of Brent Geese nesting in the same study area during two complete lemming cycles between 1990 and 1995.

There is general agreement that terrestrial systems in the Northern Hemisphere provide a significant sink for atmospheric CO2; however, estimates of the magnitude and distribution of this sink vary greatly. National forest inventories provide strong, measuretment-based constraints on the magnitude of net forest carbon uptake. We brought together forest sector C budgets for Canada, the United States, Europe, Russia, and China that were derived from forest inventory information, allometric relationships, and supplementary data sets and models. Together, these suggest that northern forests and woodlands provided a total sink for 0.6-0.7 Pg of C per year (1 Pg = 10(15) g) during the early 1990s, consisting of 0.21 Pg C/yr in living biomass, 0.08 Pg C/yrin forest products, 0.15 Pg C/yr in dead wood, and 0.13 Pg C/yr in the forest floor and soil organic matter. Estimates of changes in soil C pools have improved but remain the least certain terms of the budgets. Over 80% of the estimated sink occurred in one-third of the forest area, in temperate regions affected by fire suppression, agricultural abandonment, and plantation forestry. Growth in boreal regions was offset by fire and other disturbances that vary considerably from year to year. Comparison with atmospheric inversions suggests significant land C sinks may occur outside the forest sector.

In the Summer of 2001 a combined Dutch-Russian expedition took place to the Willem Barentz field station at Medusa Bay near Dikson in north-western Taimyr. The expedition was organized by Alterra, the Working Group for International Waterbird and Wetland Research (WIWO) and the Agricultural Department of the Dutch Embassy in Moscow. The results obtained by the Alterra team are presented in this report. Subjects of study generally concerned breeding biology of arctic breeding shorebirds, especially aspects related to timing of breeding and adult body condition. This report's purpose is not to discuss the findings thoroughly but merely to summarize the research questions addressed and present all basic information collected during the 2001 season. Topics included are spring arrival and autumn departure of waders from the tundra, breeding phenology, nest success, biometrics of adult waders, chick growth rate, return rates of adult shorebirds, and seasonal and weather-related variation in arthropod availability. Where useful, results are compared with data collected in a previous expedition in 2000. More elaborate analyses and discussion of the data will be made elsewhere.
