This paper provides a quantitative and general description of the Lyell Collection kept in the Department of Earth Sciences at the Natural History Museum of London. This collection started to be built by the eminent British geologist Sir Charles Lyell (1797-1875) in 1846 when the first specimen reached the Museum. The last one entered in 1980 donated by one of Lyell’s heirs. There are more than 1700 specimens, mainly hand specimens with 93% of the fauna and flora from the Cenozoic of the Macaronesian archipelagos of the Canaries and Madeira. Those specimens that belong to the Lyell Collection with certainty have been databased and imaged. Currently they are being geo-referred automatically with the rest of the site geo-references at the NHM. This collection could be increased by a couple of dozen more specimens with those specimens located in the same drawers, but they do not have collector details. The work of data collection of these specimens was implemented over a year from 2016 to 2017, including annelids; brachiopods; bryozoans; echinoderms; scyphozoans; bivalves; gastropods; scaphopods; trilobites; plants; reptiles; fishes; and mammals. Access to the specimen-level data is available through the NHM data portal with the images associated. This is the first time that a description of the Fossil Lyell Collection dataset is available in the literature.

Sandy Skate, Leucoraja circularis (Couch, 1838), is recorded for first time from the Syrian marine waters. Two specimens of L. circularis were caught by bottom trawl at depth about 120 m on 20 February 2017, the first specimen was an immature female and the second an immature male; they measured 580 mm and 628 mm total length, and weighed 880 g and 1240 g, respectively. This capture represents the first documented record of the species in the Syrian marine waters (Eastern Mediterranean) so further investigations should be made to detect new species along the Syrian coast.

This study gives an overview of status and distribution of signal crayfish (Pacifastacus leniusculus), the first NICS in Estonia and its influence on native noble crayfish (Astacus astacus) populations. The first specimen of signal crayfish was caught during the monitoring of noble crayfish in North Estonia in 2008. The signal crayfish has since been found in three additional sites. Test fishing has indicated that the abundance of signal crayfish has been fluctuating between years and among localities. It has had strong negative impact on abundance of one noble crayfish population. The disconnected distribution of signal crayfish strongly suggests that these populations are the result of human-assisted introductions. Real-time PCR analyses proved that signal crayfish carry the causative agent of the crayfish plague, an oomycete Aphanomyces astaci, thus contributing to its spread. Mortalities in noble crayfish populations had been caused by A. astaci strains from A, B and E genotype group.

Calymmaria persica (Hentz) is a rarely collected spider in the family Hahniidae (Araneae) previously known to occur primarily in the Appalachian Mountains. This note reports 2 new localities, each of which is a significant range extension for this species. One specimen was collected on Mount Magazine, AR, and is the first record west of the Mississippi River. The second locality is the Loessal Hills in north-central Mississippi and represents the first specimen collected in the region between southwestern Mississippi (Wilkinson County) and the Appalachian region of northern Alabama. An updated range map is included.

We report the first specimen-based records of Heosemys spinosa (Gray 1830) from Myanmar, validating earlier assumptions of its occurrence within the country. Our records consist of 5 living H. spinosa examined at Kan Baw Gyi Village in Tanintharyi Region of southern Myanmar. These specimens originated from seasonally inundated lowland riparian wetlands near the village where we examined them. Potential threats to H. spinosa in southern Myanmar include subsistence and commercial harvesting and, most importantly, the widespread conversion of natural forests to oil palm plantations.

We describe a new species of masked-owl from the lower montane forestof Seram, one of the largest islands in the Moluccasof eastern Indonesia, for which we propose the name Tyto almae (Seram Masked-Owl), sp. nov. Molecular (mitochondrial cyt-b) differences show that Tyto sororcula of Buru and Tanimbar is closely related to T. novaehollandiae of Australia and New Guinea (~1% uncorrected pairwise distance), and that Tyto almae of Seram differs by ~3% (uncorrected pairwise distance) from both of them. These differences are further corroborated by morphology and colouration. Although a photograph from Seram published in 1987 had already established the presence of a Tyto owl on the island, ours represents the first specimen of this species. The bird was mist-netted in wet, mossy lower montane forest at an elevation of 1,350 m. No further observations of the owl were made during four weeks of fieldwork in Seram.

Phalarodon atavus from the Germanic Muschelkalk Basin was previously represented only by cranial elements. Here we report a nearly complete and articulated specimen of P. atavus from the Middle Triassic Luoping Biota, Yunnan, South China. This is the first specimen of P. atavus from outside the Germanic Basin. This discovery demonstrates a peri-Tethyan distribution of P. atavus. The new specimen is also the first one preserving the postcranial anatomy of this species, providing the opportunity to evaluate its sustained swimming ability. Inferences made on its functional morphology suggest that this species was probably adapted for active foraging. Tooth crown morphology suggests that P. atavus may have preferred externally soft prey.

On 21 September 2012, a dried carcass of a bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis) was found near Black Mesa in the Oklahoma Panhandle. A complete skeleton (OMNH 55240) was salvaged and represents the first specimen record of the species in the state of Oklahoma.

For the first time, 140 years after the collection of the first specimen and 70 years after the description of Guatteria richardii R.E. Fr. from French Guiana, more specimens that are referable to this species were discovered during a taxonomic treatment for the Flora of the Guianas project, concerning Guatteria Ruiz & Pav. (Annonaceae). In addition, G. intermedia and G. montis-trinitatis, two similar species – the first widely distributed and the second endemic to the Montagne de la Trinite in French Guiana, are described as new to science.

Living trees of the early Cenozoic taxon Metasequoia glyptostroboides, were first discovered in 1943. The first specimen that triggered its discovery, however, was lost. After three years of searching, we have located the first specimen stored in an unregistered, abandoned "herbarium" at the Jiangsu Forestry Academy (JFA), Nanjing, Jiangsu, China. This first specimen was collected by C. Wang (number 118) on 21 Jul 1943 from a large tree at Modaoxi, Wan Man, Sichuan, also known as the type tree since the type was collected from the same tree by C. J. Hsueh in 1946.

We collected the skeleton of a big free-tailed bat (Nyctinomops macrotis) at a wind energy facility in Starr County, Texas. This is the first specimen record from the Lower Rio Grande Valley in southern Texas.

Two cases of extreme mandibular premolar rotation in deer are reported. The first specimen is an isolated left hemimandible of a red deer stag(Cervus elaphus) with an estimated age of 4 years, in which the P2 is rotated 180°. The second specimen is the skull of a roe buck(Capreolus capreolus), also aged about 4 years, in which the left P4 is rotated approximately 135° in disto-lingual direction. Furthermore, both P3 of the buck are rotated about 45° in palatinal direction. Based on the eight cases published so far, the uneven distribution of extreme tooth rotations within the dentition of cervids is discussed and compared with the situation in mammals in general.

We report two recently collected specimens of Accipiter imitator from Isabel Island, one of them the first specimen of a melanistic individual of the species. Surprisingly, we found no specimen records from Isabel of Accipiter albogularis, a very similar congener that occurs together with A. imitator on several islands. We call attention to the difficulties of sight identification and, based on a study of specimens, describe and tabulate morphological differences between the two species. We also give skeletal measurements of several species of Accipiter.

collected and studied the first specimen of Metasequoia glyptostroboides in 1944. Because of his more than sixty years of research and teaching experience in dendrology, forestry and ecology, Zhan has been widely regarded in China as a mentor in scientific research and professional education. His friendly manner and earnest character deeply influenced many Chinese students, scientists and administrators and impressed occasional visitors from all over the world. His remarkable contribution to science is a legacy that will certainly remain with us forever. As his students, we share with our colleagues in the botanical world our personal knowledge of Zhan’s professional life.

The rare and inadequately‐defined abyssal slickhead, Mirognathus normani Parr (F. Alepocephalidae), is redescribed based on Atlantic material and the first specimen collected from the Pacific Ocean.

Records of coyotes (Canis latrans) from Guatemala are based mostly on observational records. We review existing literature for coyotes in Guatemala and report the first specimen from this country.

A Gray Heron (Ardea cinerea) was found alive on 11 October 1996 in Newfoundland, Canada. It was identified as a Great Blue Heron (A. herodias), and prepared as a study skin for a university teaching collection. We give a description of this first specimen for North America and summarize previous records from the western hemisphere.

The Dutch painter Philips Angel (1616-1683) was born in Middelburg, the Netherlands, worked some time in Haarlem, but spent most of his time in his native city (Bol, 1949). He made a water-colour of the Javan one-horned rhinoceros (Rhinoceros sondaicus Desmarest, 1822). Since the painting is so lifelike, it appears to have been drawn from a living specimen. Therefore, it could represent the first specimen of this rare species that ever reached Europe alive. The water-colour, now in a private collection, is signed but not dated by the painter. The painting must have been made between the years 1630, around which time the career of Angel began, and 1658, when a woodcut of the water-colour was printed. The water-colour was published by Müllenmeister (1978), but until now there has been no reference to it in the zoological literature dealing with the rhinoceroses in Europe. Nothing could be found in archives in the Netherlands concerning the origin and ultimate fate of that specimen of rhino.

Oenothera hoelscheri Renner (1942: 460) ex Rostanski (1968: 189) is one of about 100 taxa of the genus Oenothera (section Oenothera subsection Oenothera ) observed in the European continent (based on research made by Hudziok (1968), Soldano (1992), Rostanski (in: Rostanski et al. 2010) and others). It originated as a result of hybridization: O. rubricaulis Klebahn (1914: 12) × O. hungarica (Borbas 1902: 204) Borbas (1903: 246) = O. depressa Greene (1891: 216) (Renner 1942). The first specimen of O. hoelscheri was collected in Wloclawek (Poland: kujawsko-pomorskie) by R. Holscher (Renner 1942). Currently, the taxon is relatively wide distributed in Central, East and North Europe (Rostanski et al. 2010).

In this study, the presence and description of Scorpaena loppei in the Turkish seas is reported. Two specimens were caught in Mersin-Tasucu Bay on 24 August 2006 by trawl net. The first specimen was 42.8 mm standard length, and the second specimen was 52.3 mm.

Description of the first specimen of Chloroscombrus chrysurus , caught in the Spanish waters of the Gulf of Cadiz, a rare species in north-east Atlantic waters. The nearest zone of frequent occurrence for this species is the Mauritanian coast, about 11 degrees south. Different hypotheses to account for the increase in reports are discussed.

Ypresioneura obscura gen. et sp. nov. from the early Eocene (Ypresian) McAbee locality (Canada, British Columbia) is described. It is assigned to the extinct neuropteroid family Corydasialidae, as the second known genus and species. The Corydasialidae was previously known only from late Eocene (Priabonian) Baltic amber. It was originally assigned to the Megaloptera, but the character states that support this conclusion are not strongly diagnostic. There is still doubt as to whether this family belongs to Megaloptera or to the Neuroptera. If this is a megalopteran (which we favor), it is the first specimen of the order from the insect-rich Okanagan Highlands series of Ypresian localities, which occur sporadically across the southern interior of British Columbia, Canada into north-central Washington, USA.

The first specimen of white sucker Catostomus commersoni encountered in Great Britain is reported: a female of 320 mm s.l., 710 g wet body weight, estimated age of 3 +, and ripe with eggs (≃21% of the body weight). Isoelectric focusing of a tissue sampSe was also undertaken.

The brown marmorated stink bug,Halyomorpha halys (Stal), is an exotic stink bug introduced into the United States in 1996 in Allentown, PA (Hoebeke and Carter 2003) (Fig. 1). It is speculated that the introduction occurred through the movement of bulk containers shipped from either the port ofPhiladelphia, or Elizabeth, NJ,to Allentown. Initially,H. halys was incorrectly identified as a local species; however, after several years of increasing homeowner complaints about large numbers ofHalyomorpha entering homes in late fall,Karen Bernhard ofthe LehighCounty Cooperative Extension Service sent specimens to Cornell University for IDconfirmation in 2001. Upon their receipt, Richard Hoebeke correctly identified the specimens as the brown marmorated stink bug, thereby establishing the first known report of this insect in the United States. Following proper identification, USDA-APHISPPQand others began monitoring the spread ofH. halys. The first specimen collected in NewJersey was in 1999 from ablacklight trap maintained by the Rutgers Cooperative Extension Vegetable IPMProgram. This collection from Milford,NJ, which is 15 miles east ofAllentown, was set aside and not identified until notification about the presence of H. halys in Pennsylvania in 2001. Hoebeke and Carter (2003) describe the lifehistory and morphological characteristics of the species. Overwintered females begin laying light green eggmasses on the undersides of host plants in late Mayand continue to do so throughout the summer.Halyomorpha halys nymphs pass through five instars. Newly emerged nymphs, orange and black in color;congregate around and feed on the eggmass (Fig.2). Subsequent instars are black, white, and pinkish in color;with white and black bands on the legs and antennae. These bands become more pronounced as the nymphs develop (Fig.3).Adults have amarbled or marmorated brown coloration, with alternating light and dark bands on the antennae and legs and the lateral margins of the abdomen. In Japan and China,H. halys is reported to have a very wide host range that includes tree fruit and soybeans (Hoebeke and Carter 2003). Watanabe (1996) discussed H. halys feeding damage on cherry in Japan. Funayama (1996) found that damage was heavier in early

Based on several lines of evidence, a specimen of an adult white-morph Reddish Egret (Egretta rufescens) now on display in the Macdonald Museum of the Annapolis Valley Historical Society in Middleton, Nova Scotia, probably originated from the 19th-century Nova Scotian bird collections of Thomas McCulloch senior (1776–1843) and his son Thomas (1809–1865), likely between 1838 and 1865. The only other records of this species in Canada are sightings in Nova Scotia in 1965 and 1966. This may therefore be the first specimen evidence of the species in Nova Scotia and Canada. Historical evidence links the specimen with the McCulloch collection of birds, part of which has survived at Dalhousie University.

Two hundred years have passed since a skin, representing the first specimen of the platypus to reach England, was sent from the Australian colony by Governor Hunter. After its description by Shaw in 1799 the species was first studied in Australia by a number of expatriate biologists who visited the colonies to collect specimens in the 1800s. Their work was followed in the early 1900s by a group of resident natural historians and later by an increasing number of academic biologists. All of these workers have contributed significantly to the current understanding of the biology of this unique Australian species, but it has been in the last I0-20 years of this century that scientific investigations of the species have diversified to greatly increase our understanding of many aspects of the biology of Ornithorhynchus anatinus.

A kite collected in Hacienda Pontezuelas, 10 km S del Carrizo, Gral. Teran (70 km SE Monterrey), appears to be the first specimen recorded of the hook-billed kite (Chondrohierax uncinatus) from the state of Nuevo Leon, Mexico. The specimen, an adult female, was taken from its perch in an Acacia sp. on 16 January 1989. Neither Martin del Campo (1959) nor the American Ornithologists' Union (1983) record this species from Nuevo Leon. However, Palmer (1988) mentioned that a female hook-billed kite was previously (date and exact locality unknown) collected near her nest in Nuevo Leon. Our specimen was deposited in the Coleccion de Aves, Laboratorio de Herpetologia y Ornitologia, Facultad de Ciencias Biologicas, Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo Leon (UNAL 1696). The disposition of the specimen mentioned by Palmer (1988) is unknown. On two previous occasions, we observed hookbilled kites near their nests in Nuevo Leon. One

A specimen of Tadarida aloysiisabaudiae from Western Uganda, Africa, appears to represent the third known example of this species since its original discovery in 1907 and the first specimen to be collected since 1913. External and cranial measurements agree closely with the type specimen. It is compared with Tadarida bivittata and confirmed as a distinctively different species. The lateral view of the lower jaw and anterior aspect of the upper and lower canines and incisors are illustrated for the first time.

While on an ant-collecting trip to Pelee Point, Ontario, August 6, 1931, with Dr. Mary Talbot, Miss Mable Schramm and Prof. Merle G. McFadden, the writer found a queen (Coll. No. 526), the first specimen of this new Solenopsis. The striking rose pink color of the gaster was a shade of red we had not found before in any of the ants of this region.

The first specimen of Otonyctomys hatti Anthony from British Honduras is documented and illustrated. The existing records of occurrences of this genus are reviewed and mapped. A tabular summary of measurements is provided for six specimens, the only ones now known to exist, with the exception of the bone material recovered from cave deposits in the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico.

ON the morning of June 5, 1905, in company with Jim and Stanley Taylor, both enthusiasts in bird-study, I started from Marin County equipped for a three months trip by wagon to Eagle Lake, California. We purposed to collect some of the birds of the Lake and intervening region, and at the same time to enjoy the wilderness that abounds in the northern counties of California. We had a trip of four hundred miles before us, a trip which proved to be one of the roughest we had ever experienced. A tedious fourteen hours of navigation up the Sacramento River brought us to the capitol city at 4 A. M. We were soon beyond the outskirts of Sacramento and into the big wheat fields of the valley, where after not more than three miles of travel we took our first specimen, a young Yellow-billed Magpie. Having secured a permit from the Fish Commissioners we were not so wary of being molested by the "don't shoot here" property owners, that were numerous enough along the county roads of the valley. From the second day on we began to take notes, and the long evenings were spent in putting up skins of birds we had anticipated putting in our cabinets. On the fourth day, after traveling thru the intense heat of the valley, we arrived at a beautiful spot at the base of the "table" mountains, the commencement of the Sierras. Here bird-life was at its height. It seemed like entering a large aviary as we walked thru the thick foliage that grew on either side of the creek. Tree Swallows, Kingbirds, Chats, Gnatcatchers, Woodpeckers, Vireos and others were all nesting in numbers; most nests found either contained young, or eggs advanced in incubation. The thickets of blackberry vines and thistles seemed to be there but for the purpose of a building-site for the Russet-backed Thrush and the Chat. The latter's pleasing whistle was ever to be heard, and above the din, from the throats of the numerous other birds, we would intently listen, at long intervals, to the melodious notes of the California Cuckoo.

The first specimen of giant squid studied from Newfoundland waters in 29 years, here identified as Architeuthis dux Steenstrup, was found to demonstrate regeneration of the terminal or club portion of the left tentacular arm. The regenerated club differed in length and width, and in the size and pattern of suckers, when compared with the normal tentacular arm. The process, as interpreted, is compared with the few references to regeneration in other species of decapod cephalopods found in the literature. It is stressed that this regeneration does not comply with Mathilda Lange's (1920) concept of regeneration in decapods by compensatory regulation.

The first record of the Midas bat, Tadarida (Mops} midas midas (Sundevall), a large, tropical species of free-tailed bat, is noted from the vicinity of Skukuza, and it is also the first specimen of this species for South Africa.

The rare black, tailed, clearwing moth, Alcathoe carolinensis Engelhardt, is previously known from Florida only by a single specimen taken by Sharp & Eichlin (1979) in north-central Florida during an extensive four-year sex attractant trapping study (1975-78). This lone Florida specimen was a male taken in a sticky trap located in a peach orchard near Lowell in Marion Co. on October 6, 1977. Prior to Sharp's state record, A. carolinensis was known in the U.S. only from a single male specimen considered by Engelhardt (1946) to be a female and a doubtful record presumably taken by Beutenmuller in the Black Mountains of North Carolina. Engelhardt speculated incorrectly that the lone specimen was probably a mislabled clearwing species from Mexico or Central America. In the late summer and fall months of 1984, extensive sampling for sesiids using sex attractants was begun at numerous locals in west-central and southwestern Florida. This survey will continue for two years but has already produced three new Florida localities for A. carolinensis, thus confirming Sharp's lone published state record. The specimens are as follows: 1) 1 male taken at Chassahowitzka, Citrus Co. on Oct. 12, 1984; 2) 1 male taken 1 mi. W. of Homosassa Springs, Citrus Co. on Oct. 14, 1984; and 3) 1 male taken 11/2 mi. SW of Crystal River, Citrus Co. on Oct. 19, 1984. The Chassahowitzka specimen was taken in a Pherocon R-1C sticky trap, but the other two were trapped alive in excellent condition, in home-made cylindrical live-traps originally designed for sugared-beer baiting for noctuid moths. All three specimens were attracted to commercially prepared strips containing capillary tubes (Pest Select, Inc.) which release EZ-3,13-octadecadien-1-ol acetate (usually abbreviated EZ-3,13 ODDA). Several other isomers & chemical combinations known to be sesiid attractants were also utilized, but they failed to attract A. carolinensis. These include: 1) ZZ-3,13-ODDA, 2) EZ-2, 13-ODDA, 3) EZ-3, 13-ODD alcohol, and 4) 50% EZ-3, 13-ODDA plus 50% ZZ-3, 13ODDA. The identifiction of A. carolinensis was confirmed by T. D. Eichlin, Division of Plant Industry, Sacramento, California. The specimens are presently deposited in the U.S.F. Biological Collections. It should be noted that the single specimen taken in 1977 (Sharp, et. al. 1978) responded to a trap baited with a mixture of 25% ZZ-3,13-ODDA plus 75% EZ-3,13ODDA, and the date was within a week of the first specimen taken in 1984. It is possible that A. carolinensis in Florida, has a fairly narrow annual emergence window, because to date it has been recorded only in October, even though traps were baited with attractant more or less continuously throughout the fall months in suitable areas.

That the known specimens of Bison (Gigantobison) latifrons are extremely rare, and that much more extensive and accurate data are to be desired on this species, has been pointed out by Skinner and Kaisen (1947). J. R. Schultz (1937), discussing the problem of Pliocene-Pleistocene boundary and the correlation of European and North American vertebrate faunas, states that "further explorations coupled with exact field work and careful collecting in the Snake River region of Idaho, the Valley of Mexico, and in the Paso Robles and Tulare beds of California may throw much needed light on the problem..." and that "as yet the terrestrial faunas of the Western States have not been tied in with either the marine section or the glacial drift." It is the purpose of this paper to present data on two unusually large and complete skulls of Bison (Gigantobison) latifrons, both of which came from the same stratigraphic horizon in the American Falls Lake beds near Pocatello, Idaho, which have been exposed by the erosive action of American Falls Reservoir. This is the first account, I believe, of latifrons as related to Idaho. The evidence points toward both skulls being in situ when excavated. Their inclusion in the literature would bring to five the known total of nearly complete skulls of this species. Fortunately, the apparent stratigraphic position of the two latifrons skulls reported here, relative to the three local and heretofore undescribed specimens of Bison (Simobison) alleni, can also be given. Perhaps these data may eventually help to throw light on the chronologic sequence of these two species of bison in the intermontane west, and to clarify this relationship in this region as compared with findings relative to the same problem in the Great Plains, as reported by Schultz and Frankforter (1946) and in California by Donald E. Savage (1950). The first specimen of latifrons to be found in this region was found by Mr. Wayne B. Whitlow, teacher of zoology at Pocatello High School. He and his student, Mr. Woodrow Benson, excavated it late in the fall of 1933 from the east beach of American Falls Reservoir, SE j Sec. 9, T 6 S, R 32 E. This specimen is now in the possession of Mr. Whitlow at Pocatello High School. When discovered about midway between the cliff and the water's edge, only one horn core tip was protruding above the sand. The upper skull was complete when found, but the facial portion was so badly disintegrated that only nasals, four teeth, and the cranium and horn cores were recovered. The degree of fusion of the cranial sutures and the extent of tooth wear indicate that this is a skull of a fully mature and possibly old individual. The teeth show a little more wear than those of the Hopkins specimen, (PI. I) to be described later. In the Whitlow specimen both; horn core tips are somewhat incomplete, the right more so than the left. The more complete left side measure3 1051 mm. from the frontal suture to the end of the horn core tip. If allowance is made for the eroded conditions of the tips, this skull probably exceeds the 192 Vol. 82, No. 2

On 22 June 1971 at 11:30, my wife and I found a dead, adult, female (ova, 1 mm and below) Blackthroated Blue Warbler (Dendroica caerulescens) at our home in Panther Junction (elevation, 3850 ft), Big Bend National Park, Brewster County, Texas. The bird was still fresh and apparently was a windowkill as both of its mandibles were broken, and it was discovered beneath a picture window. Factors influencing the presence of this species in late June in the Chihuahuan desert in Big Bend are unknown. Probably the bird was a late, stray migrant, as it was very fat (9.6 g) and appeared to be in good health. The previous night had been very stormy. This is the first specimen for West Texas. It was preserved as a study skin (DAE 2571) and is deposited at Big Bend National Park Museum.

Kirkpatrick recorded the first specimen of the evening bat, Nycticeius humeralis , in Indiana (Amer. Midl. Nat., 29: 797,1943). Since that time nine additional specimens have been recorded (Mumford, Jour. …

Until the present time, Sorex merriami was represented in California only by a skin and skull from Siskiyou County, and two incomplete skulls from owl pellets collected in Modoc County.
