Wind is a critical factor in the ecology of pollinating insects such as bees. However, the role of wind in determining patterns of bee abundance and floral visitation rates across space and time is not well understood. Orchid bees are an important and diverse group of neotropical pollinators that harvest pollen, nectar and resin from plants. In addition, male orchid bees collect volatile scents that they store in special chambers in their hind legs, and for which the wind-based dispersal of odors may play a particularly crucial role. Here we take advantage of this specialized scent foraging behavior to study the effects of wind on orchid bee visitation at scent sources in a fragmented tropical forest ecosystem. We find that temporal changes in wind speed and turbulence are correlated with visitation to scent stations within sites, while local landscape structure is a strong determinant of spatial variation in visitation across nearby sites. These results suggest that the increased dispersal of attractive scents provided by wind and turbulence outweighs any biomechanical or energetic costs that might deter bees from foraging in these conditions. Overall, our results highlight the significance of wind in the ecology of these important pollinators in neotropical forests.

Individuals in social insect colonies cooperate to perform collective work. While colonies often respond to changing environmental conditions by flexibly reallocating workers to different tasks, the factors determining which workers switch and why are not well understood. Here, we use an automated tracking system to continuously monitor nest behavior and foraging activity of uniquely identified workers from entire bumble bee (Bombus impatiens) colonies foraging in a natural outdoor environment. We show that most foraging is performed by a small number of workers and that the intensity and distribution of foraging is actively regulated at the colony level in response to forager removal. By analyzing worker nest behavior before and after forager removal, we show that spatial fidelity of workers within the nest generates uneven interaction with relevant localized information sources, and predicts which workers initiate foraging after disturbance. Much of our understanding of the control and dynamics of animal movement derives from controlled laboratory experiments. While many aspects of animal movement can be probed only in these settings, a more complete understanding of animal locomotion may be gained by linking experiments on relatively simple motions in the laboratory to studies of more complex behaviours in natural settings. To demonstrate the utility of this approach, we examined the effects of wing damage on dragonfly flight performance in both a laboratory drop–escape response and the more natural context of aerial predation. The laboratory experiment shows that hindwing area loss reduces vertical acceleration and average flight velocity, and the predation experiment demonstrates that this type of wing damage results in a significant decline in capture success. Taken together, these results suggest that wing damage may take a serious toll on wild dragonflies, potentially reducing both reproductive success and survival.

Landing is an important but understudied behavior that flying animals must perform constantly. In still air, insects decelerate smoothly prior to landing by employing the relatively simple strategy of maintaining a constant rate of image expansion during their approach. However, it is unclear whether insects employ this strategy when faced with challenging flight environments. Here, we tested the effects of wind on bumblebees ( Bombus impatiens ) landing on flowers. We find that bees9 approach paths to flowers shift from multidirectional in still air to unidirectional in wind, regardless of flower orientation. In addition, bees landing in a 3.5 m s −1 headwind do not decelerate smoothly, but rather maintain a high flight speed until contact, resulting in higher peak decelerations upon impact. These findings suggest that wind has a strong influence on insect landing behavior and performance, with important implications for the design of micro aerial vehicles and the ecomechanics of insect flight.

Background Animal pollinators provide vital ecosystem services that sustain biodiversity and support agricultural yields. Declining pollinator populations threaten to affect human health outcomes by decreasing crop yields and human nutrient intake, and there is a well-recognised need to understand how environmental stressors such as pesticides affect bees, the most important animal pollinators. Neonicotinoid pesticides in particular, the most widely used class of insecticide globally, pose a major threat to bees. While there is now strong evidence that neonicotinoids can affect bee behaviour and colony growth, major knowledge gaps remain in understanding how these pesticides affect pollinator health. First, the specific mechanisms by which neonicotinoid exposure affect bee colonies are not well understood, limiting the ability to predict their effects. Second, it is unclear how pesticide exposure interacts with other environmental stressors, which could either amplify or attenuate the effects of neonicotinoids. Methods We describe the development of an automated, robotic system aimed at helping to fill these gaps in knowledge. Specifically, this system harnesses advances in computer vision to track the behaviour of hundreds of individual bees across dozens of colonies simultaneously. Specifically, this system uses a computer-controlled, motorised camera array to collect video data from up to a dozen bumblebee colonies in parallel. We then use computer vision-based techniques to automatically measure key aspects of behaviour (eg, activity level, task performance, and social interactions) for individually tagged bees before and after exposure to neonicotinoid pesticides. Findings Using a preliminary version of this system, we have found that exposure to field-realistic levels of a common neonicotinoid pesticide (imidacloprid) affects key aspects of social behaviour in bumblebees ( Bombus impatiens ). These effects include reduced rates of nursing (27% reduction; p Interpretation This automated, parallel system is ideal for studying the effects of multiple environmental stressors, and we are currently extending it to investigate simultaneous exposure to neonicotinoids, thermal stress, and nutritional deficiency on the behaviour and health of bee colonies. This system can provide efficient screening of agrochemicals at low cost, and could provide an important instrument for policymakers and other shareholders to assess the risk of agrochemicals to the health of both bee and human populations. SUMMARYAerial predation is a highly complex, three-dimensional flight behavior that affects the individual fitness and population dynamics of both predator and prey. Most studies of predation adopt either an ecological approach in which capture or survival rates are quantified, or a biomechanical approach in which the physical interaction is studied in detail. In the present study, we show that combining these two approaches provides insight into the interaction between hunting dragonflies (Libellula cyanea) and their prey (Drosophila melanogaster) that neither type of study can provide on its own. We performed >2500 predation trials on nine dragonflies housed in an outdoor artificial habitat to identify sources of variability in capture success, and analyzed simultaneous predator–prey flight kinematics from 50 high-speed videos. The ecological approach revealed that capture success is affected by light intensity in some individuals but that prey density explains most of the variability in success rate. The biomechanical approach revealed that fruit flies rarely respond to approaching dragonflies with evasive maneuvers, and are rarely successful when they do. However, flies perform random turns during flight, whose characteristics differ between individuals, and these routine, erratic turns are responsible for more failed predation attempts than evasive maneuvers. By combining the two approaches, we were able to determine that the flies pursued by dragonflies when prey density is low fly more erratically, and that dragonflies are less successful at capturing them. This highlights the importance of considering the behavior of both participants, as well as their biomechanics and ecology, in developing a more integrative understanding of organismal interactions.
