Concrete is a widely used building material in coastal constructions worldwide. However, limited natural resources used in the production process, as well as high CO2-emission due to the calcination process of limestone and the thermal energy demand for Portland cement clinker production, raise the demand for alternative constituents. Alternative mixture types should be environmentally friendly and, at best, mimic natural hard substrates. Here five different concrete mixtures, containing different cements (Portland cement and blast furnace cements) and aggregates (sand, gravel, iron ore and metallurgical slags) were made. Three replicate cubes (15 × 15 × 15 cm) of each type were then deployed in a German deep-water Port, the JadeWeserPort, to study benthic community establishment after one year. Results are compared to a similar experiment conducted in a natural hard ground environment (Helgoland Island, Germany). Results indicate marked differences in settled communities in the Port site compared to natural environments. At the Port site community composition did not differ with the concrete mixtures. Surface orientation of the cubes (front/top/back) revealed significant differences in species abundances and compositions. Cubes hold more neobiota in the Port site than in natural hard ground environments. Implications for the usage of new concrete mixtures are discussed.

Polar regions are facing rapid temperature increase. In Arctic fjord systems, increased temperatures result in hyposalinity caused by the melting of sea ice and glaciers and freshwater run-off. Additionally, enhanced freshwater discharge and intrusion of nutrient-rich Atlantic water may result in nutrient input in summer. Combined, these factors might have a strong impact on primary producers, such as the abundant kelp speciesSaccharina latissima, an important foundation species in Arctic shallow-water coastal ecosystems. We ran 2 short-term 2factor experiments with field samples from Kongsfjorden (Svalbard) to evaluate the impact of temperature increase in summer combined with hyposalinity (temperature × salinity) or nutrient enrichment (temperature × nutrients) on the physiological and biochemical status of ArcticS. latissima. In the temperature × salinity experiment, growth and maximum photosynthetic quantum yield of photosystem II (Fv/Fm) were generally not affected. Temperature increase resulted in increased C:N ratios, based on decreasing nitrogen assimilation. Overall, hyposalinity had no severe effect but resulted in lower phlorotannin concentrations. Growth andFv/Fmimproved with increasing temperatures and nutrient enrichment. The de-epoxidation state of the xanthophyll cycle and mannitol declined at higher temperatures. Regarding other biochemical response variables, nutrients had no major impact (temperature × nutrients). In conclusion, in line with its broad latitudinal distribution range and adaptability,S. latissimaproved to be highly resilient to changing abiotic drivers and will likely be promoted by warming in the future Arctic.

Abstract Correlative species distribution modelling is a widely used method to predict potential species ranges but can suffer from limitations in integrating species’ fundamental niches. Therefore, they might underestimate suitable ranges, but including physiological information can improve accuracy of predictions and help identify mechanisms of e.g. range limitation. However, approaches using both, results from correlative as well as physiological investigations are rare, especially in research on seaweeds. Here, we provide results from both approaches to predict the suitable habitat range of Capreolia implexa (Rhodophyta) in its native range (Australia and New Zealand) and invaded range (Chile) under present and future climate scenarios (year 2100, rcp 2.6 and rcp 8.5). We used the Maxent modelling technique and physiological knowledge from a temperature tolerance experiment (2–20 °C) for thermal niche estimation. Results from both approaches suggest larger suitable habitat ranges under present day conditions for both regions than currently occupied. Abiotic range limitation in the native range led to underestimation of the suitable temperature range by Maxent (here lower temperature limit = 8.3 °C). Predictions based on the laboratory temperature tolerance experiment suggest additional suitable habitat in colder regions (here lower temperature limit = 6.6 ± 0.4 °C). Under future climate conditions, both native and invaded ranges should shift southward, which will lead to an overall loss of suitable habitat in the native range. Like that, rcp 8.5 conditions should reduce the native range to 50% of the present-day extent. We demonstrate the limitation of correlative SDM modelling for species that live on continental margins and that physiological experiments can help to identify species’ niches beyond correlative analyses, providing valuable information for range projections. To understand the thermal plasticity of a coastal foundation species across its latitudinal distribution, we assess physiological responses to high temperature stress in the kelp Laminaria digitata in combination with population genetic characteristics and relate heat resilience to genetic features and phylogeography. We hypothesize that populations from Arctic and cold-temperate locations are less heat resilient than populations from warm distributional edges. Using meristems of natural L. digitata populations from six locations ranging between Kongsfjorden, Spitsbergen (79°N), and Quiberon, France (47°N), we performed a common-garden heat stress experiment applying 15°C to 23°C over eight days. We assessed growth, photosynthetic quantum yield, carbon and nitrogen storage, and xanthophyll pigment contents as response traits. Population connectivity and genetic diversity were analyzed with microsatellite markers. Results from the heat stress experiment suggest that the upper temperature limit of L. digitata is nearly identical across its distribution range, but subtle differences in growth and stress responses were revealed for three populations from the species' ecological range margins. Two populations at the species' warm distribution limit showed higher temperature tolerance compared to other populations in growth at 19°C and recovery from 21°C (Quiberon, France), and photosynthetic quantum yield and xanthophyll pigment responses at 23°C (Helgoland, Germany). In L. digitata from the northernmost population (Spitsbergen, Norway), quantum yield indicated the highest heat sensitivity. Microsatellite genotyping revealed all sampled populations to be genetically distinct, with a strong hierarchical structure between southern and northern clades. Genetic diversity was lowest in the isolated population of the North Sea island of Helgoland and highest in Roscoff in the English Channel. All together, these results support the hypothesis of moderate local differentiation across L. digitata's European distribution, whereas effects are likely too weak to ameliorate the species' capacity to withstand ocean warming and marine heatwaves at the southern range edge. The kelp Alaria esculenta represents a key species in high Arctic marine fjord ecosystems. However, the European Arctic is currently experiencing extensive environmental change. Glacial fjord systems, such as Kongsfjorden (Spitsbergen, Svalbard), are subjected to rising temperature, increased freshwater inflow from glaciers and melting snow and a changing ultraviolet (UV) radiation regime related to stratospheric ozone depletion. Thus, in addition to natural seasonality, sessile organisms require acclimation in order to adapt to an environment in transition. We examined the physiological and ultrastructural responses of A. esculenta to the combined exposure to hyposalinity and UV radiation. Light adaptive strategies were studied in a comparative analysis of the congeneric seagrass species Zostera muelleri and Zostera marina at two case study areas in New Zealand and Germany. Surveys in intertidal seagrass meadows were conducted from pre-dawn until sunset on days when either low or high tide coincided with noon. The results show marked fluctuations of photophysiology (optimum and effective quantum yield, non-photochemical quenching, cycling of xanthophyll cycle (XC) pigments) over daily and tidal cycles. At both locations, we observed a near complete conversion (de-epoxidation) of violaxanthin to zeaxanthin at times with high irradiance and a rapid and complete re-epoxidation under subsequent lower light conditions. At the New Zealand site we also observed significantly larger XC-pigment pool sizes in seagrass leaves sampled in a week when low tide coincided with noon (larger daily fluence and higher maximum irradiance), compared with leaves sampled in a week when high tide was at noon. This dynamic adjustment of xanthophyll pool size has not been previously reported for intertidal seagrasses. It adds to our understanding of an important adaptive feature in a highly dynamic light environment and to the general ecology and adaptability of seagrasses.

Seasonal environmental changes may significantly influence macroalgal diversity and biomass. Cryptogam species richness increases towards the poles, especially in sub-Antarctic environments. Yet, subpolar seaweed biodiversity and ecophysiology remain understudied even though it is essential for the management and sustainability of endemic species of significant economic interest (e.g., Gigartina skottsbergii). We evaluate the seasonality and ecophysiology of the different life phases of the rhodophyte G. skottsbergii by analyzing variation in fluorescence yield and photosynthetic pigment composition. There were significant seasonal differences in maximum relative electron transport rate (rETRmax) between gametophyte and tetrasporophyte phase, and between reproductive and vegetative specimens. Photosynthetic efficiency (α) was not significantly different between reproductive states of G. skottsbergii. We found significant differences in mean concentrations of allophycocyanin (APC), phycocyanin (PC), and chlorophyll a (Chl a) between gametophyte and tetrasporophyte phases. Results obtained provide new insight into seasonal acclimation patterns of an ecologically important species, which can be used for the design of appropriate management and cultivation strategies of G. skottsbergii towards the restoration of natural populations in fragile, subpolar regions where some of the last, relatively undisturbed communities of G. skottsbergii still remain.

The Arctic region is currently facing substantial environmental changes due to global warming. Melting glaciers cause reduced salinity environments in coastal Arctic habitats, which may be stressful for kelp beds. To investigate the responses of the kelp Saccharina latissima to the warming Arctic, we studied the transcriptomic changes of S. latissima from Kongsfjorden (Svalbard, Norway) over a 24-hour exposure to two salinities (Absolute Salinity [SA ] 20 and 30) after a 7-day pre-acclimation at three temperatures (0, 8 and 15°C). In addition, corresponding physiological data were assessed during an 11-days salinity/temperature experiment. Growth and maximal quantum yield for photosystem II fluorescence were positively affected by increased temperature during acclimation, whereas hyposalinity caused negative effects at the last day of treatment. In contrast, hyposalinity induced marked changes on the transcriptomic level. Compared to the control (8°C - SA 30), the 8°C - SA 20 exhibited the highest number of differentially expressed genes (DEGs), followed by the 0°C - SA 20. Comparisons indicate that S. latissima tends to convert its energy from primary metabolism (e.g. photosynthesis) to antioxidant activity under hyposaline stress. The increase in physiological performance at 15°C shows that S. latissima in the Arctic region can adjust and might even benefit from increased temperatures. However, in Arctic fjord environments its performance might become impaired by decreased salinity as a result of ice melting.

Seagrass meadows are a crucial component of tropical marine reef ecosystems. Seagrass plants are colonized by a multitude of epiphytic organisms that contribute to broadening the ecological role of seagrasses. To better understand how environmental changes like ocean acidification might affect epiphytic assemblages, the microbial community composition of the epiphytic biofilm of Enhalus acroides was investigated at a natural CO2 vent in Papua New Guinea using molecular fingerprinting and next-generation sequencing of 16S and 18S rRNA genes. Both bacterial and eukaryotic epiphytes formed distinct communities at the CO2 -impacted site compared with the control site. This site-related CO2 effect was also visible in the succession pattern of microbial epiphytes. We further found an increased relative sequence abundance of bacterial types associated with coral diseases at the CO2 -impacted site (Fusobacteria, Thalassomonas), whereas eukaryotes such as certain crustose coralline algae commonly related to healthy reefs were less diverse. These trends in the epiphytic community of E. acroides suggest a potential role of seagrasses as vectors of coral pathogens and may support previous predictions of a decrease in reef health and prevalence of diseases under future ocean acidification scenarios.

Large brown seaweeds (kelps) represent ecologically important habitats in coastal systems. Along the western shores of the Svalbard archipelago, the kelp Alaria esculenta forms dense stands and provides habitat to a multitude of associated organisms. At the growth site in shallow waters, kelp sporophytes can be exposed to high irradiances of harmful ultraviolet (UV-B) radiation resulting from a thinning of the stratospheric ozone layer over the Arctic. Here, we tested to what extent UV-B-induced impairment of photophysiology is accompanied by changes in the cellular ultrastructure of A. esculenta and characterizes sites of cellular damage after UV exposure. Adverse effects on cellular components mostly manifest in chloroplast thylakoid membrane integrity, which is accompanied by a decrease in maximal quantum yield of photosystem II. At the applied irradiances of UV radiation, A. esculenta is stressed to an intermediate extent confirming its adaptability to a moderately increased UV-B climate.

Three macroalgal species belonging to Chlorophyta (Ulva rigida), Rhodophyta (Ellisolandia elongata) and Phaeophyceae (Heterokontophyta; Cystoseira tamariscifolia), natu- rally growing at the same shore level and representing 3 morpho-functional groups, were exposed to short-term changes in temperature under different carbon and nitrogen regimes. Experiments were conducted in outdoor tanks at 4 combinations of carbon and nitrogen levels under reduced solar radiation. In vivo chl a fluorescence parameters and pigment contents were monitored to assess diurnal physiological responses and potential for recovery. Strong fluctuations in chl a flu- orescence parameters, but not in chl a content, were observed in response to diurnal variation in solar radiation and light climate within the tanks; sensitivity varied between algal species and, in some cases, depended on the carbon and nitrogen regime. Nitrogen uptake was similarly high in U. rigida and E. elongata and lowest in C. tamariscifolia. In U. rigida and E. elongata, chl a con- centrations decreased after high-carbon treatments. Effective photosystem II quantum efficiency was reduced in all species at noon, and lowest in C. tamariscifolia. The results highlight the com- plexity of physiological short-term acclimations which were most likely linked to biochemical changes at the cellular level. Long-term experiments are required in future for more comprehen- sive investigation of the observed interactive effects of the different environmental parameters.

We evaluated spatial differences in seagrass cover related to environmental conditions (light, temperature, sediment grain size distribution, and porewater nutrients) and differences in seagrass photosynthetic pigment composition and morphometry (above and below ground biomass, shoot length and leaf width, and percentage cover) at four sites in the meso-tidal estuarine lagoon Tauranga Harbour, North Island, New Zealand. Two sites were sandy and wave-exposed and two others were muddy and sheltered, while one of each site types was located in the north and south of Tauranga Harbour, respectively. Results showed marked differences in environmental conditions, seagrass metrics as well as in pigment content and composition. In particular, the sheltered site in the north was found to be different from the other sites, having the lowest light regime and highest mud and phosphate content. Seagrass at this site had the highest overall biomass, with especially high above ground biomass as well as elevated overall pigment content and both light harvesting and protective pigments. The exposed site in the north had the highest light levels and the lowest porewater ammonium content, accommodating intermediate seagrass biomass and low pigment contents. The two sites in the south had intermediate environmental conditions (except for the sheltered site, which had the highest porewater ammonium content), but lower seagrass biomass than the sites in the north. Our findings indicate that Zostera muelleri shows a high physiological and morphological plasticity and can grow in a wide range of environmental conditions. Intermediate light conditions, high mud content and phosphate content seem to benefit seagrass growth.

Invasive species are generally believed to be more tolerant to varying abiotic conditions than native species. Here, we report the combined effect of temperature (5, 15, 20 and 25 °C) and salinity (33, 24, 18, 12 and 6 SA) on the performance of the invasive kelp Undaria pinnatifida and two native kelp species (Lessonia variegata, Ecklonia radiata) from Tauranga Harbour, New Zealand (37°38′S, 176°10′E, 2014). Vegetative blade discs were exposed to temperature and salinity treatments in a 10-day laboratory experiment, and the physiological response was assessed employing photosynthetic (Fv/Fm, ETRmax) as well as biochemical parameters (chlorophyll a, xanthophylls and antioxidant pool size). U. pinnatifida sustained a high photosynthetic quantum yield in most treatments, with a negative synergistic effect on photosynthetic yield observed at 25 °C and low salinities (12, 6 SA). E. radiata died in salinities below 18 SA, except at 5 °C and L. variegata was highly susceptible to elevated temperatures (20, 25 °C). Antioxidant pool size showed species-specific responses to the experimental conditions, being most resilient in U. pinnatifida. Overall, U. pinnatifida displayed broader tolerance to the experimental salinity and temperature conditions than native kelps. The abilities to cope with a wide range in abiotic factors and to thrive in estuarine conditions might contribute to higher competitive strength compared to native kelps leading to its invasion success, especially with regard to ocean warming.

The in hospite Symbiodinium symbiont of corals on shallow reefs relies on photoprotection and photorepair during periods of exposure to short-term high light and/or temperature stress. A coral’s susceptibility to bleaching is species specific and determined not only by Symbiodinium type, size and physiology, but also by coral host features. Here, photoprotective, photorepair, photochemical and non-photochemical efficiency parameters of Symbiodinium harboured in two morphologically different coral species were examined on Heron Island (23.4420°S, 151.9140°E) in July 2011. The two coral species were exposed to high light stress for 96 h, with or without inhibition of photosystem (PS) II repair by lincomycin. Symbiodinium harboured in Pocillopora damicornis showed an increase in xanthophyll de-epoxidation under high light exposure, whereas algal symbionts in Pavona decussata showed constant levels of xanthophyll de-epoxidation. High light-treated specimens of P. damicornis maintained steady PsbA protein (D1 protein) content throughout the experiment, but P. decussata showed a peak in PsbA protein content after 48 h of exposure. In hospite Symbiodinium in P. damicornis had greater content of PsbA protein fragments, suggesting higher accumulation of photodamaged products, compared to Symbiodinium in P. decussata, where both maintained steady PSII photochemical capacity over 96 h of exposure. Under inhibition of PSII repair, both species lost PsbA protein content and PSII photochemical capacity. Both species showed increased heat dissipation under inhibition of PSII repair, but differed in photoprotective strategies and photorepair activity. Our results suggest that, as well as any differences in the symbiont, characteristics of the coral host can alter important physiological responses in Symbiodinium.

This study examined the capacity for photoprotection and repair of photo-inactivated photosystem II in the same Symbiodinium clade associated with two coexisting coral species during high-light stress in order to test for the modulation of the symbiont’s photobiological response by the coral host. After 4 days exposure to in situ irradiance, symbionts of the bleaching-sensitive Pocillopora damicornis showed rapid synthesis of photoprotective pigments (by 44 %) and strongly enhanced rates of xanthophyll cycling (by 446 %) while being insufficient to prevent photoinhibition (sustained loss in Fv/Fm at night) and loss of symbionts after 4 days. By contrast, Pavona decussata showed no significant changes in Fv/Fm, symbiont density or xanthophyll cycling. Given the association with the same Symbiodinium clade in both coral species, our findings suggest that symbionts in the two species examined may experience different in hospite light conditions as a result of different biometric properties of the coral host.

Since pre-industrial times, uptake of anthropogenic CO2 by surface ocean waters has caused a documented change of 0.1 pH units. Calcifying organisms are sensitive to elevated CO2 concentrations due to their calcium carbonate skeletons. In temperate rocky intertidal environments, calcifying and noncalcifying macroalgae make up diverse benthic photoautotrophic communities. These communities may change as calcifiers and noncalcifiers respond differently to rising CO2 concentrations. In order to test this hypothesis, we conducted an 86 d mesocosm experiment to investigate the physiological and competitive responses of calcifying and noncalcifying temperate marine macroalgae to 385, 665, and 1486 mu atm CO2. We focused on comparing 2 abundant red algae in the Northeast Atlantic: Corallina officinalis (calcifying) and Chondrus crispus (noncalcifying). We found an interactive effect of CO2 concentration and exposure time on growth rates of C. officinalis, and total protein and carbohydrate concentrations in both species. Photosynthetic rates did not show a strong response. Calcification in C. officinalis showed a parabolic response, while skeletal inorganic carbon decreased with increasing CO2. Community structure changed, as Chondrus crispus cover increased in all treatments, while C. officinalis cover decreased in both elevated-CO2 treatments. Photochemical parameters of other species are also presented. Our results suggest that CO2 will alter the competitive strengths of calcifying and noncalcifying temperate benthic macroalgae, resulting in different community structures, unless these species are able to adapt at a rate similar to or faster than the current rate of increasing sea-surface CO2 concentrations.

Future atmospheric CO2 levels will most likely have complex consequences for marine organisms, particulary photosynthetic calcifying organisms. Corallina officinalis L. is an erect calcifying macroalga found in the inter- and subtidal regions of temperate rocky coastlines and provides important substrate and refugia for marine meiofauna. The main goal of the current study was to determine the physiological responses of C. officinalis to increased CO2 concentrations expected to occur within the next century and beyond. Our results show that growth and production of inorganic material decreased under high CO2 levels, while carbonic anhydrase activity was stimulated and negatively correlated to algal inorganic content. Photosynthetic efficiency based on oxygen evolution was also negatively affected by increased CO2. The results of this study indicate that C. officinalis may become less competitive under future CO2 levels, which could result in structural changes in future temperate intertidal communities. Palmaria decipiens (Reinsch) R.W. Ricker (1987) represents one of the dominant rhodophyte species in Antarctic coastal ecosystems. Due to its high abundance in the intertidal and upper subtidal it plays a key role in ecosystem structure and function, providing habitat, food and shelter for a multitude of associated organisms. The physiology, reproductive strategy and life cycle of P. decipiens is considered as being well adapted to the Antarctic environment, which is characterized by permanent low water temperatures and a strong seasonality in light climate. With its obvious ecological significance and adaptive strategies P. decipiens was frequently studied as a typical representative of an endemic Antarctic macroalga. Here we provide an overview of the recent literature, summarizing the knowledge gained about the alga during the last 25 years. This review focuses on the species life cycle and physiological responses, such as temperature requirements, photosynthetic characteristics, pigment content and protective mechanisms with regard to enhanced ultraviolet radiation (UV-B radiation, 280–315 nm and UV-A radiation, 315–400 nm). The ecology of P. decipiens is reviewed focussing on grazing activity and abundance patterns. Since most studies on P. decipiens have been conducted at King George Island off the western Antarctic Peninsula this overview serves as a summary of baseline data from an ecosystem particularly prone to environmental change.

Lobophora variegata is a dominant macroalga on coral reefs across the Caribbean. Over the last two decades, it has expanded its vertical distribution to both shallow and deep reefs along the leeward coast of the island of Curacao, Southern Caribbean. However, the ecological implications of this expansion and the role of L. variegata as a living substratum are poorly known. This study compared epiphytic algal communities on L. variegata blades along two depth transects (6–40 m). The epiphytic community was diverse with a total of 70 species of which 49 were found directly attached to L. variegata. The epiphytic community varied significantly between blade surface, depth and site. The greatest number of genera per blade was found growing on the underside of the blades regardless of site and depth. Filamentous red algae (e.g. Neosiphonia howei) were commonly found on the upperside of the blades over the whole depth gradient, whereas the underside was mainly colonized by calcifying (e.g. Hydrolithon spp., Jania spp., Amphiroa fragillissima), fleshy red algae (e.g. Champia spp., Gelidiopsis spp., Hypneaspinella) and foliose brown alga (e.g. Dictyota spp.). Anotrichum tenue, a red alga capable of overgrowing corals, was a common epiphyte of both blade surfaces. L. variegata plays an important role as a newly available substratum. Thus, its spread may influence other algal species and studies of benthic macroalgae such as L. variegata should also take into consideration their associated epiphytic algal communities.

Spores and gametophytes are considered to be those life-history stages of kelps most susceptible to environmental perturbations and, in particular, to temperature and UV radiation. Microstages of Arctic (Saccharina latissima, Laminaria digitata, Alaria esculenta from Spitsbergen) and temperate kelp species (S. latissima, L. digitata, L. hyperborea from the North Sea) were exposed in 2-factorial experiments to different temperatures (2 to 18°C) and radiation conditions (photosyn- thetic active radiation, UV-A radiation, UV-B radiation). Our results reveal ecotypic differentiations in the stress responses of zoospores of L. digitata and S. latissima from the Arctic and North Sea. UV- A radiation either enhanced the formation of gametes at elevated temperatures in L. digitata or impaired egg release and subsequent sporophyte formation in L. hyperborea. Microstages exposed to additional UV-B radiation were strongly inhibited to a population-, species- and life phase-specific degree at suboptimal and optimal temperatures. Only gametogenesis of Laminaria spp. was shown to be tolerant to UV-B exposure. Conclusively, in respect to a future scenario of elevated UV radiation regimes and higher summer temperatures in Arctic and North Sea waters, summer-recruiting Arctic species and L. digitata from the North Sea might become endangered by a frequent disturbance of their microstages.

This review about the genus Laminaria sensu lato summarizes the extensive literature that has been published since the overview of the genus given by Kain in 1979. The recent proposal to divide the genus into the two genera Laminaria and Saccharina is acknowledged, but the published data are discussed under a 'sensu lato' concept, introduced here. This includes all species which have been considered to be 'Laminaria' before the division of the genus. In detail, after an introduction the review covers recent insights into phylogeny and taxonomy, and discusses morphotypes, ecotypes, population genetics and demography. It describes growth and photosynthetic performance of sporophytes with special paragraphs on the regulation of sporogenesis, regulation by endogenous rhythms, nutrient metabolism, storage products, and salinity tolerance. The biology of microstages is discussed separately. The ecology of these kelps is described with a focus on stress defence against abiotic and biotic factors and the role of Laminaria as habitat, its trophic interactions and its competition is discussed. Finally, recent developments in aquaculture are summarized. In conclusion to each section, as a perspective and guide to future research, we draw attention to the remaining gaps in the knowledge about the genus and kelps in general.

Photosynthesis at high latitudes demands efficient strategies of light utilization to maintain algal fitness and performance. The fitness, and physiological adaptation, of a plant or algae species depends in part on the abundance and efficiency of the pigments it can produce to utilize the light resource from its environment. We quantified pigment composition and concentration in six species of the brown macroalgal genus Desmarestia, collected from sub-Antarctic sites (Strait of Magellan, Beagle Channel–Cape Horn Province) and sites on the Antarctic Peninsula and adjacent islands. Sub-Antarctic Desmarestia species exhibited lower concentrations of chlorophyll a , chlorophyll c and fucoxanthin than endemic Antarctic species. Antarctic samples of D. menziesii and D. antarctica collected along a decreasing latitudinal gradient showed spatial and interspecific differences in light-harvesting pigment composition. Our results suggest distinct physiological adjustments in Desmarestia species in response to heterogeneous abiotic environmental conditions. The marine sub-Antarctic and Antarctic ecosystems are characterized by harsh environments (e.g., extreme irradiance, photoperiod, temperature, salinity) to which the physiology of macroalgal species must adapt. The giant kelp, Macrocystis pyrifera, is exposed to highly variable irradiance and temperature regimes across its geographic and vertical depth gradients. The objective of this study was to extend our understanding of algal acclimation strategies on different temporal scales to those varying abiotic conditions at various water depths. Different acclimation strategies to various water depths (0.2 and 4 m) between different sampling times (Jan/Feb and Aug/Sept 2012; long-term acclimation) and more rapid adjustments to different depths (0.2, 2 and 4 m; short-term acclimation) during 14 d of transplantation were found. Adjustments of variable Chl a fluorescence, pigment composition (Chl c, fucoxanthin), and the de-epoxidation state of the xanthophyll cycle pigments were responsible for the development of different physiological states with respect to various solar radiation and temperature climates. Interestingly, the results indicated that phlorotannins are important during long-term acclimation while antioxidants have a crucial role during short-term acclimation. Furthermore, the results suggested that modifications in total lipids and fatty acid compositions apparently also might play a role in depth acclimation. In Aug/Sept (austral winter), M. pyrifera responded to the transplantation from 4 m to 0.2 m depth with a rise in the degree of saturation and a switch from shorter- to longer-chain fatty acids. These changes seem to be essential for the readjustment of thylakoid membranes and might, thus, facilitate efficient photosynthesis under changing irradiances and temperatures. Further experiments are needed to disentangle the relative contribution of solar radiation, temperature and also other abiotic parameters in the observed physiological changes.

Polar seaweeds are strongly adapted to the low temperatures of their environment, Antarctic species more strongly than Arctic species due to the longer cold water history of the Antarctic region. By reason of the strong isolation of the Southern Ocean the Antarctic marine flora is characterized by a high degree of endemism, whereas in the Arctic only few endemic species have been found so far. All polar species are strongly shade adapted and their phenology is finely tuned to the strong seasonal changes of the light conditions. The paper summarises the present knowledge of seaweeds from both polar regions with regard to the following topics: the history of seaweed research in polar regions; the environment of seaweeds in polar waters; biodiversity, biogeographical relationships and vertical distribution of Arctic and Antarctic seaweeds; life histories and physiological thallus anatomy; temperature demands and geographical distribution; light demands and depth zonation; the effect of salinity, temperature and desiccation on supra-and eulittoral seaweeds; seasonality of reproduction and the physiological characteristics of microscopic developmental stages; seasonal growth and photosynthesis; elemental and nutritional contents and chemical and physical defences against herbivory. We present evidence to show that specific characteristics and adaptations in polar seaweeds help to explain their ecological success under environmentally extreme conditions. In conclusion, as a perspective and guide for future research we draw attention to many remaining gaps in knowledge.

Stratospheric ozone depletion and the concomitant increase in irradiance of ultraviolet-B radiation (UVB) at the earth’s surface represent major threats to terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. In costal rocky shore environments, seaweeds constitute a group of organisms of particular significance to ecosystem function. Thus, impairment of seaweed performance by UVB-exposure may result in severe changes in the functioning of coastal ecosystems. Here we present our view on how UVB radiation affects seaweed physiology and ecology and, thus, shapes the coastal environment by affecting the spatial, species and functional structure of seaweed communities.

Summary 1 The UV susceptibility of zoospores of the brown seaweeds Saccorhiza dermatodea, Alaria esculenta and Laminaria digitata (Laminariales) was determined in field experiments in June 2004 on Spitsbergen (78°55′ N, 11°56′ E). 2 Freshly released zoospores were exposed for 1 or 2 days at various water depths to ambient solar radiation, ambient solar radiation depleted of UVB radiation (UVBR) and ambient solar radiation depleted of both UVBR and UVAR. Subsequently, germination rates were determined after exposure to favourable light and temperature conditions in the laboratory. 3 The radiation regime was monitored at the water surface and in the water column using data loggers attached adjacent to each experimental platform for the duration of the field exposure. 4 Under ambient solar radiation, the tolerance of zoospores to UVR was highest in the shallow water species S. dermatodea, intermediate in the upper to mid sublittoral A. esculenta and lowest in the upper to mid sublittoral L. digitata. There was, however, no difference in the susceptibility of the zoospores to ambient solar radiation or to solar radiation depleted of UVBR. 5 The water column was relatively UV transparent, especially in the upper water layers. The 1% UVB depth ranged between 5.35 and 6.87 m, although on one stormy day the 1% UVB depth was only 3.57 m, indicating resuspension of sediments. 6 Early developmental stages are most susceptible to environmental stress. Tolerance of zoospores to UVR is a major if not one of the most important factors determining the upper distribution limit of different Laminariales on the shore. 7 Kelps are very important primary producers in inshore coastal ecosystems, serving as food for herbivores and as habitat for many organisms. Enhanced UVBR due to stratospheric ozone depletion may lead to changes in the depth distribution of kelps and may cause significant ecological domino effects.

Chaetomorpha linum (Muller) Kutzing is a dominant mat-forming green macroalgal species within eutrophic systems. Its structure, comprising thick mats of interwoven filaments, requires acclimation to either high or low irradiance along a steep gradient of light arising from self- shading. Occurring in high-light environments, such as that along the southern coast of Spain, C. linum mats represent an excellent model system for studying spatial differences in photoacclimation and also the interactive effects of photosynthetically active and ultraviolet radiation on photoinhibi- tion. This study was conducted in eutrophic brine-pond systems along the Bay of Cadiz (southern Spain). For periods of up to 1 wk, C. linum mats were exposed to natural solar radiation under differ- ent cut-off filters to study the effects of different wavelength ranges on photosynthetic activity, pigment and protein composition, and the occurrence of oxidative stress and changes in enzymatic activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD). The results revealed a particularly high tolerance of C. linum photosynthesis to high light and UV exposure. Addition of the UV-B range (280 to 315 nm) to photo- synthetically active radiation, resulted in inhibition of non-photochemical quenching, a delay in recovery from photoinhibition, and an increase in both lipid peroxidation and SOD activity. In con- trast, pigment and protein data revealed acclimation to the high irradiances of photosynthetically active radiation, but no additional effect of UV radiation. The data suggest that even in a high- radiation environment such as southern Spain, UV-B radiation plays a minor role in photoacclimation of C. linum, but is effective in increasing both the generation and scavenging of oxidative stress. The UV-induced increase in SOD activity represents an important physiological acclimation mechanism of C. linum, enabling it to thrive under high UV radiation and high-light conditions.

Long-term effects of artificial ultraviolet radiation (UV) and natural solar radiation on growth and photosynthetic activity, as measured by chlorophyll fluorescence, were investigated in 13 different polar and cold-temperate macroalgal species. Isolates of five different species from the Arctic and Antarctic were exposed to different light treatments of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), PAR+UVA and PAR+UVA+UVB. Eight different species collected on the island of Helgoland, North Sea, Germany, were studied in the laboratory and under natural solar radiation conditions. Increase in fresh weight and changes in photosynthetic performance were monitored over a period of 3–4 weeks. The sublittoral polar species, particularly the Antarctic red algal species Gymnogongrus antarcticus and G. turquetii, the Arctic cold-temperate brown alga Alaria esculenta and, very drastically, the Arctic-endemic Laminaria solidungula, exhibited strong inhibiting effects of artificial UVB radiation on growth. In the cold-temperate sublittoral growth of the red algae Phycodrys rubens and, to a lesser extend, Membranoptera alata was substantially inhibited by UV radiation. In contrast, eulittoral species, e.g. Fucus serratus, did not show any differences in growth with respect to artificial irradiation conditions, with or without UV radiation. In the laboratory, some individuals of the green alga Codium fragile exhibited strong morphological changes of the whole thallus, particularly under UVB exposure. In the experimental outdoor set up, growth of most of the algal species was already inhibited by the full solar UV waveband, but, apart from Polyides rotundus, no additional UVB effect could be detected. Changes of in vivo fluorescence were not always consistent with the measurable changes in growth rate, indicating that physiological processes leading to an inhibition of growth may act independently of changes in photosynthetic activity. For the polar species, a general correlation between the natural vertical distribution in the field and the individual sensitivity towards UV radiation was indicated, while for eulittoral species from Helgoland no clear relationship was found. The obtained results show that measuring growth is a good ecological parameter to monitor long-term effects of UV radiation on single macroalgal species and the possible resulting changes of whole algal communities in coastal ecosystems.

Marine macroalgae inhabiting Arctic coastal ecosystems are exposed to pronounced seasonal variations in the radiation regime, including harmful UVB radiation. This study presents the first data on the seasonal changes in the sensitivity of macroalgal photosynthesis towards UV exposure by comparing under-ice, clear-water and turbid-water conditions characteristic for late winter, spring and summer. Various brown (Laminariasaccharina, L. digitata, L. solidungula, Saccorhizadermatodea, Desmarestiaaculeata), red (Palmariapalmata, Devaleraearamentacea) and one green macroalgal species (Monostroma aff. arcticum) were collected at the same water depth throughout the seasons in the Kongsfjord (Spitsbergen, Svalbard, Norway). Maximum quantum yield (Fv/Fm) and maximum photosynthetic electron transport rates (ETRmax) were determined immediately after collection, after 2 h exposure to artificial UV radiation and after 18 h recovery in dim white light. Photosynthesis of the studied species showed different responses depending on their morpho-functional and physiological characteristics, their life strategies, phenology and depth distribution. Within the genus Laminaria, maximum quantum yield of adult specimens of the deep-water species L. solidungula was most strongly UV sensitive. Adult L. saccharina exhibited a lower UV sensitivity than a 6-month-old specimen. Inhibition of photosynthesis after UV exposure remained at the same level throughout the study period, both in adult L. saccharina and S. dermatodea. However, adult specimens of L. saccharina collected in May showed partial recovery only, whereas photosynthesis of specimens from both species collected later recovered fully. D. aculeata exhibited a remarkable decrease of UV sensitivity during the study period. Photosynthesis of specimens collected under the ice was strongly inhibited by UV, but the degree of inhibition decreased during spring and summer. Concomitantly ETRmax values were low after UV exposure in specimens collected in June, but increased later in the season. P. palmata exhibited a relatively flexible response. Photosynthesis in specimens collected under the ice in June or in turbid water in July/August was relatively strongly inhibited; specimens collected during sunny periods and in clear water in spring showed a much lower degree of photoinhibition after UV exposure. The seasonal pattern of low/high ETRmax values in spring/summer is probably a characteristic of the life strategy of this species. The UV sensitivity of D. ramentacea exhibited a similar seasonal pattern. In M. aff. arcticum, UV sensitivity increased and ETRmax values decreased during the study period, reflecting the life strategy of this annual late winter/spring species. The physiological basis for the seasonal changes in UV sensitivity of photosynthesis is presented in a companion paper (this issue).

The content of photosynthetic pigments (chlorophyll a, biliproteins, carotenoids) and UV-absorbing mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs), as well as the activity of reactive oxygen species scavenging enzymes (catalase, superoxide dismutase, glutathione reductase) was investigated in six macroalgal species with respect to the seasonal changes of the solar radiation regime and the macronutrient levels in the seawater of the Kongsfjord (Spitsbergen, Svalbard, Norway). The brown algae Laminaria saccharina, Saccorhiza dermatodea, Desmarestia aculeata; the red algae Palmaria palmata and Devaleraea ramentacea; and one green algal species, Monostroma aff. arcticum, were sampled from the same water depth, before, during and after the break-up of sea ice, first under clear and later under turbid water conditions in late winter, spring and summer 1998. In all species, chlorophyll a (chl a) and total carotenoid content were highest under the sea-ice cover, and decreased gradually upon the sea-ice break-up. Four species showed a subsequent recovery in chl a and total carotenoid concentration in parallel to increasing water turbidity and reduced light availability. In the two red algal species, total phycoerythrin and phycocyanin contents followed a similar trend. Coinciding with the increase in underwater radiation during the sea-ice break-up, both species exhibited a significant increase in the concentration of UV-absorbing MAAs, especially of shinorine and palythine. At the same time, the antioxidative activities of the enzymes superoxide dismutase and catalase in the green and red algae increased, while glutathione reductase activity decreased. Overall, the synthesis of UV-absorbing substances and the increase in the activity of the antioxidative systems in the open-water period imply an increased resistance to high underwater light conditions, including UV radiation. The seasonal changes in pigments and biochemical defence systems may additionally be related to variations in nutrient levels in the seawater. They also reflect the life strategy and the genetic adaptation of the seasonal development to the conditions in the Arctic.

International audience; Despite the increasing dominance of turf algae in coral reefs, few studies have investigated their physiological and ecological responses to changes in abiotic factors. We tested the effects of depth and ultraviolet radiation on turf algae at different levels of successional stages using two experiments. Depth-related differences were found for all turf algal communities, characterized by a higher amount of the cyanobacteria taxon Dichothrix and the red filamentous genera Poly-/Herposiphonia in the shallow and the appearance of oscillating cyanobacteria in deeper waters. In the first experiment, cross-depth transplantation of 153 days old communities influenced percentage cover, biomass and taxa composition. Downward transplantation lowered overall biomass and abundance of the foraminifera Sorites, whereas the crustose green alga Pringsheimiella and filamentous cyanobacteria colonized the communities. A nearly reverse pattern was observed in upward transplanted communities. Overall we distinguished between sensitive taxa, like Oscillatoria, and taxa able to acclimate to alterations in their environment, like Pringsheimiella, Poly/Herposiphonia and Dichothrix. In the second experiment, algae grown for 285 days at 5 m were exposed together with a set of sterile settlement tiles to three UVR regimes at 2 m for 22 days. UVR had no effect on turf algal communities regardless of successional stage. This study highlights the presence of high light and UV tolerant species. The high UV tolerance of turf communities may confer a competitive advantage over other more sensitive coral reef biota, such as corals. This study demonstrates that turf algae are dynamic communities exhibiting species-specific resistance to environmental changes.

Since the Industrial Revolution, the partial pressure of carbon dioxide (pCO2) has been increasing and global ocean surface waters have absorbed 30% of the anthropogenic CO2 released into the atmosphere. An increase in pCO2 in surface ocean waters causes an increase in bicarbonate ions (HCO3 − ) and protons (H + ) and a decrease in carbonate ions (CO3 2− ), thereby decreasing the pH and the saturation state of the seawater with respect to CO3 2− . These changes in ocean chemistry (termed ocean acidification) are expected to have negative impacts on marine calcifying organisms. Because calcifying marine primary producers are important to the carbon cycle and rocky shore habitat structure and stability, investigating how they will respond to future oceanic pCO2 levels is a relevant and important topic of research. Due to a recent strong increase in the number of studies investigating the responses of calcifying marine macroalgae to elevated pCO2, this review aims to present the state of knowledge on the response of calcifying macroalgae to ocean acidification alone and in combination with global and local stressors. We discuss the physiological responses of calcifying macroalgae to elevated pCO2 within the contexts biogeo - graphy, taxonomy, and calcification mechanisms. Generally, coralline algae that deposit high-Mg calcite are most susceptible to high pCO2, and polar species are particularly at risk. However, some dolomite-depositing species may be able to acclimate to high pCO2. Calcifiers generally show sensitivity to overgrowth and outcompetition by noncalcifying algae when grown under elevated CO2 conditions, and this trend could be amplified under conditions of high inorganic nutrients. However, it still remains unknown whether or not calcifiers will be able to adapt to their rapidly changing environments. We discuss the lack of research on this topic, and provide some suggestions for how this knowledge gap can be filled by future research.

Short-term effects of increasing pCO(2); 380 ppm (LC) vs. 700 ppm (HC); at different nitrogen levels; 5 mu M nitrate (LN) vs. 50 mu M (HN); on the contents of protein, mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs), phenolic compounds and total fatty acids, antioxidant activity, calcification and C: N ratios were analyzed in 3 eulittoral Mediterranean macroalgae with different bio-optical characteristics and carbon assimilation efficiencies: Cystoseira tamariscifolia (Heterokontophyta), Ulva rigida (Chlorophyta) and Ellisolandia elongata (Rhodophyta). After acclimation to different pCO(2) and nitrogen conditions for 6 d, the algae were subjected to a 4 degrees C temperature increase for 3 d. Increasing temperature and pCO(2) produced alterations in the biochemical composition of the 3 macroalgae. Short-term variations of protein levels were observed in U. rigida, with clearly decreased values in the HCLN treatment. In C. tamariscifolia, protein decreased after the temperature increase but only under LC. The interaction of temperature and N affected phenolic compounds only in U. rigida and the content of MAAs in E. elongata. The functional patterns of the 3 macroalgae in response to the pCO(2), nitrogen and temperature regimes may be explained in terms of their bio-optical characteristics and antioxidant activity. The vulnerability and acclimation of the 3 species to the expected variations of climate change factors are discussed.

Introduction The basic patterns of alternation of sporophyte and gametophyte must be regarded as a theme on which many variations are played (Fig. 2.1). Each generation may reproduce itself asexually, and sexual reproduction should be taken to include meiosporogenesis as well as gametogenesis and mating (Clayton 1988). Asexual reproduction allows an economical population increase but no genetic mixing, whereas sexual reproduction allows genetic mixing but is more costly because of the waste of gametes that fail to mate (Clayton 1981; Russell 1986; Santelices 1990). Most seaweeds use both means of reproduction, and, as Russell (1986) has noted, where there are isogametes, these can function equally as asexual swarmers. Vegetative reproduction by “multicellular propagules”, defined by Cecere et al . (2011) as “a vegetative, multicellular structure which detaches from the parent thallus and gives rise to a new individual”, is also common, for example Halimeda (Walters et al . 2002). However, their roles in species’ dispersal, and forming overwintering and resting “organs” that allow the survival of unfavorable environmental conditions, is unknown (Russell 1986; Cecere et al . 2011). Clonal seaweeds may spread by stolons and/or rhizomes, giving a significant competitive edge in the space race (sec. 1.2.3, 4.2.3). Some floating algal populations depend entirely on vegetative reproduction by fragmentation (sec. 3.3.7). Culture studies are critical in establishing the range of possible life histories that can occur. Sufficient variations have been discovered in the basic pattern – between and within species – that today’s generalizations must be viewed only as working hypotheses. New variations in what are considered to be well-known life cycles are regularly uncovered. For example, male gametophytes of Laminaria digitata can reproduce themselves via fragmentation (Destombe et al . 2011). Although a basic alternation of a sporophyte (typically diploid) and a gametophyte (typically haploid) is common among seaweeds various extras and shortcuts are known (Fig. 2.1). Indeed, a better generalization may be that almost any alternation is possible, and even no alternation at all. Moreover, the term “alternation” is a misnomer, in that it implies only two phases and a regular progression from one to the other; clearly that is not always the case (e.g. Scytosiphon , Fig. 2.2). Maggs (1988, p. 488) concluded that “life-history patterns seem to be more labile than morphological features, and the role of life-history variability in speciation, and in ecological success, should not be underestimated”.

Solar radiation as a primary abiotic factor affecting productivity of seaweeds was monitored in the Arctic Kongsfjord on Spitsbergen from 1996 to 1998. The radiation was measured in air and underwater, with special emphasis on the UV-B (ultraviolet B, 280–320 nm) radiation, which may increase under conditions of stratospheric ozone depletion. The recorded irradiances were related to ozone concentrations measured concurrently in the atmosphere above the Kongsfjord with a balloon-carried ozone probe and by TOMS satellite. For comparison, an ozone index (a spectroradiometrically determined irradiance of a wavelength dependent on ozone concentration, standardized to a non-affected wavelength) was used to indicate the total ozone concentration present in the atmosphere. Weather conditions and, hence, solar irradiance measured at ground level were seldom stable throughout the study. UV-B irradiation was clearly dependent on the actual ozone concentration in the atmosphere with a maximal fluence rate of downward irradiance of 0.27 W m−2 on the ground and a maximal daily fluence (radiation exposure) of 23.3 kJ m−2. To characterize the water body, the light transmittance, temperature and salinity were monitored at two different locations: (1) at a sheltered shallow-water bay and (2) at a wave-exposed, deep-water location within the Kongsfjord. During the clearest water conditions in spring, the vertical attenuation coefficient (Kd) for photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) was 0.12 m−1 and for UV-B 0.34 m−1. In spring, coinciding with low temperatures and clear water conditions, the harmful UV radiation penetrated deeply into the water column and the threshold irradiance negatively affecting primary plant productivity was still found at about 5–6 m depth. The water body in spring was characterized as a Jerlov coastal water type 1. With increasing temperature in summer, snow layers and glacier ice melted, resulting in a high discharge of turbid fresh water into the fjord. This caused a stratification in the optical features, the salinity and temperature of the water body. During melt-water input, a turbid freshwater layer was formed above the more dense sea water. Under these conditions, light attenuation was stronger than defined for a Jerlov coastal water type 9. Solar radiation was strongly attenuated in the first few metres of the water column. Consequently, organisms in deeper water are protected against harmful UV-B radiation. In the surface water, turbidity decreased when rising tide caused an advection of clearer oceanic water. In the course of the summer season, salinity continuously decreased and water temperature increased particularly in shallow water regions. The impact of global climate change on the radiation conditions under water and its effects on primary production of seaweeds are discussed, since organisms in the eulittoral and upper sublittoral zones are affected by UV radiation throughout the polar day. In clearer water conditions during spring, this may also apply to organisms inhabiting greater depths.

Measurements of photosynthesis, germination capacity and assessment of DNA damage were carried out in the laboratory to determine the effect of different conditions of ultraviolet (UV) and photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) on zoospores of various large brown algae collected on Spitsbergen (Svalbard, High Arctic) and Tarifa (Cadiz, southern Spain). Results were correlated to in situ light conditions and indicated that zoospores suffer photoinhibition of photosynthesis, loss of viability and DNA damage in relation to the growth depth of parental sporophytes. At both sites, germination capacity of zoospores in species collected in deep waters was more strongly impaired after exposure to the same UV doses than in species from shallower waters. In general, zoospores exposed to PAR+UVA+UVB showed higher mortality rates than after exposure to PAR+UVA or PAR alone. For Laminaria digitata from Spitsbergen, it was found that the loss of zoospore viability is the result of DNA damage and photodamage of the photosynthetic apparatus. UVB irradiances occurring in southern Spain at water depths shallower than 7 m prevented the germination of spores of deep water Laminariales from this region.

Due to depletion of stratospheric ozone over polar regions of the Northern and Southern Hemispheres UV-B-radiation has increased at the surface of the earth. Measurements of variable chlorophyll fluorescence were conducted to document UV-induced photoinhibition of photosystem II in cultivated macroalgae with different depth distributions in Antarctica. The reactions during artificial UV-exposure were observed on a short time scale (hours) and in light–dark cycles over several days. The nine species of investigated macroalgae show great differences in UV-tolerance of the photosynthetic process. Photosynthesis of the studied green algae was inhibited to a minor degree, while the brown algae showed an intermediate inhibition of photosynthesis. The response of the studied red algae varied with species. The differences in the degree of inhibition and recovery of photosynthetic efficiency and capacity indicate that UV-radiation is one important factor affecting the vertical distribution of macroalgae in nature.

Solar ultraviolet-B radiation (UVB) represents a crucial environmental factor organisms in terrestrial and shallow aquatic ecosystems have to cope with. Based on their prime importance to habitat formation in coastal ecosystems, seaweeds have been intensively studied with respect to their physiological and ecological responses toward UVB exposure. The adverse effects of UVB on biomolecules may impair physiological functions (like, e.g., the photosynthetic machinery) and may ultimately result in changes in population, community, and ecosystem structure. This chapter summarizes adverse effects, acclimation strategies, and adaptive traits in seaweeds under UVB exposure, with a particular focus on the impact on microscopic developmental stages.

Seaweeds, also known as macroalgae, are among the most important primary producers and act as ecological engineers on rocky coasts of the world’s oceans. In addition to their extreme ecological importance they are also of high economic relevance. Complementing available textbooks with its more research-oriented approach, this volume contains 22 chapters by renowned experts, grouped in five parts. In Part I fundamental processes and acclimation strategies of seaweeds towards the abiotic environment are covered. Part II focuses on the multitude of biotic interactions in seaweed communities, and in Part III the reader is introduced to the structure and function of the main seaweed systems of the world. The chapters of Part IV highlight and discuss the effects of global and local environmental changes on seaweeds and their communities. In the final Part V a comprehensive overview of developments in seaweed aquaculture, industrial applications and the overall economic importance of seaweeds is provided. Summarizing the advances in seaweed biology achieved within the last few decades, this book also identifies gaps in the present knowledge and needs for future research.

Over the past three decades, Caribbean coral reefs have drastically changed in structure and organization due to anthropogenically driven environmental changes. The prognostic trend indicates a shift from coralto more algal-dominated reefs coupled with a loss in biodiversity and destabilization of reef structure. This study focuses on the composition of the most common algal growth form, the turf, and investigates turf succession within a fringing Caribbean coral reef. In a field study starting October 2007, we followed succession of turf algal assemblages grown on artificial substrata for periods of 15 up to 333 days at different water depths (5, 15 and 25 m). Species composition and abundance, biodiversity, total cover, and biomass were investigated and compared in uniand multivariate analyses. Despite the pronounced change in coral reef structure over the past years, we found little difference from primary succession patterns described 30 years earlier. Succession patterns revealed a high diversity, mainly driven by the filamentous brown algal order Ectocarpales, the crustose green alga Pringsheimiella scutata at early stage, and diverse filamentous Cyanobacteria at later stages. Overall, the study provides insight into the early successional stages of coral reef vegetation by identifying the key species and discussing possible factors determining reef development in relation to environmental change.

Organisms living in the littoral ecosystem have to a certain extent developed the capability to adapt to an increasing stress factor, e.g. the increasing UV radiation. From the studies conducted so far, it can be concluded that the presently measured UV levels are not likely to seriously affect the macroalgal communities in Arctic coastal ecosystems. Although photosynthesis and growth were shown to be sensitive to UV exposure when algae were sampled or transplanted from their original location, all species studied exhibited sufficient acclimation potential to the respective variations in radiation conditions at their specific growth site. However, in combination with other stress factors, e.g. global warming, increased storm frequencies or pollution the impact on the plant will increase or may even become exponential so that the organism is strongly harmed and the species might become endangered. As a result, this will affect not only the plant community but also the grazers and carnivores which adopt a higher position in the respective biotic pyramid. In future, more attention has to be directed to the small developmental stages of the macroalgae. Zonation pattern depends mostly on this life history stage with the highest susceptibility to UV. Due to the tiny size or the delicate structure of the early developmental stages, UV penetrates easily and can produce strong damage to the young organisms. Due to the central role of macroalgae as primary producers at the Arctic coast line these investigations will provide important information on the function of this unique ecosystem.
