AbstractOrganismal divergence can be driven by differential resource use and adaptation to different trophic niches. Variation in diet is a major factor shaping the gut microbiota, which is crucial for many aspects of their hosts' biology. However, it remains largely unknown how host diet diversity affects the gut microbiota, and it could be hypothesized that trophic niche width is positively associated with gut microbiota diversity. To test this idea, we sequenced the 16S ribosomal RNA gene from intestinal tissue of 14 threespine stickleback populations from lakes of varying size on Vancouver Island, Canada, that have been shown to differ in trophic niche width. Using lake size as a proxy for trophic ecology, we found evidence for higher gut microbiota uniqueness among individuals from populations with broader trophic niches. While these results suggest that diet diversity might promote gut microbiota diversity, additional work investigating diet and gut microbiota variation of the same host organisms will be necessary. Yet our results motivate the question of how host population diversity (e.g., ecological, morphological, genetic) might interact with the gut microbiota during the adaptation to ecological niches.

Estimating relative abundance is critical for informing conservation and management efforts and for making inferences about the effects of environmental change on populations. Freshwater fisheries span large geographic regions, occupy diverse habitats and consist of varying species assemblages. Monitoring schemes used to sample these diverse populations often result in populations being sampled at different times and under different environmental conditions. Varying sampling conditions can bias estimates of abundance when compared across time, location and species, and properly accounting for these biases is critical for making inferences. We develop a joint species distribution model (JSDM) that accounts for varying sampling conditions due to the environment and time of sampling when estimating relative abundance. The novelty of our JSDM is that we explicitly model sampling effort as the product of known quantities based on time and gear type and an unknown functional relationship to capture seasonal variation in species life history. We use the model to study relative abundance of six freshwater fish species across the state of Minnesota, USA. Our model enables estimates of relative abundance to be compared both within and across species and lakes, and captures the inconsistent sampling present in the data. We discuss how gear type, water temperature and day of the year impact catchability for each species at the lake level and throughout a year. We compare our estimates of relative abundance to those obtained from a model that assumes constant catchability to highlight important differences within and across lakes and species. Synthesis and applications: Our method illustrates that assumptions relating indices of abundance to observed catch data can greatly impact model inferences derived from JSDMs. Specifically, not accounting for varying sampling conditions can bias inference of relative abundance, restricting our ability to detect responses to management interventions and environmental change. While our focus is on freshwater fisheries, this model architecture can be adopted to other systems where catchability may vary as a function of space, time and species.

Abstract Background Floodplains harbor highly biodiverse ecosystems, which have been strongly affected by both past climate change and by recent human activities, resulting in a high prevalence of many endangered species in these habitats. Understanding the history of floodplain species over a wide range of timescales can contribute to effective conservation planning. We reconstructed the population formation history of the Itasenpara bitterling Acheilognathus longipinnis, an endangered floodplain fish species in Japan, over a broad timescale based on phylogenetic analysis, demographic modeling, and historical demographic analysis using mitogenome and whole-genome sequences. A genome sequence was newly assembled as a reference for the resequencing analysis. This bitterling is distributed in three plains separated by high mountain ranges and exhibits ecological characteristics well adapted to floodplain environments. Results Our analyses revealed an unexpected population branching pattern, gene flow, and timing of the differentiation that occurred within a few hundred thousand years, i.e., long after the mountain uplift that was assumed to be the primary geological cause of the population differentiation. The analyses also showed that all local populations experienced a severe decline during the last glacial and post-glacial periods. Conclusions Our results suggest that the floodplain bitterling was able to disperse through unknown routes after mountain uplift and that its populations were strongly influenced by climatic and geographic changes in glacial–interglacial cycles and subsequent human activities, probably related to its floodplain-dependent ecology. The genomic data highlight the unanticipated distribution process of this species and the magnitude of the impact of human activities, with important implications for its conservation.

Evaluation of the thermal requirements of fish species is particularly important given ongoing climate change and warming trends. Assessing thermal tolerance reveals the potential a species has to persist, spread, or disappear. For this purpose, we determined an upper limit of thermal tolerance for 22 European fish and lamprey species based on temperature maxima in streams in northern Poland (southern Baltic Sea catchment) and sampling of fish species. We related the observed thresholds of the realized thermal niches to data from the literature on tolerance and lethal temperatures as boundaries of the fundamental niches of species. Additionally, upper tolerance boundaries are reported here for the first time for some species. For all species, the upper limit of physiological endurance (lethal temperature) was clearly higher than the tolerance threshold. For most cold-water and cool-water species, the upper limits of thermal tolerance matched or were similar to the field data. For the remaining species, mainly Cypryniformes, the tolerance thresholds (obtained from laboratory experiments) were distinctly higher than the temperatures reached in the stream environments. Alpine bullhead (Cottus poecilopus) was found to be an extreme representative of cold water stenotherms. It can be concluded that species for which the upper tolerance limit is 30 °C have a “thermal reserve” and are not immediately threatened by warming trends.

IntroductionMegaleporinus obtusidens, also known as "boga," is a freshwater teleost fish species widely distributed across South America with significant commercial value in Argentina and Brazil. Fishers, particularly those in the lower Paraná River, frequently classify the fish they catch as M. obtusidens. Despite various approaches, including cytogenetics, molecular data, and morphological analysis, the taxonomic classification of the boga fish remains debated among researchers, resulting in discrepancies in the literature.MethodsThis study aimed to assess the diversity of specimens captured in the La Plata River Basin, initially classified as Megaleporinus obtusidens by fishers, using DNA barcoding. The mitochondrial COI marker was employed to explore species assignment and genetic diversity in Megaleporinus, a genus with high commercial exploitation in the southern area of the La Plata Basin.ResultsOur findings indicate that some boga samples, previously identified as M. obtusidens, are actually M. piavussu. We also observed significant differences in the geographic distribution, diversity, and genetic structure between the two species.DiscussionThese results highlight the importance of studying the ecology of each species separately. Proper resource management, based on accurate species identification, is critical for the conservation of ichthyofauna in the region.

In this study, we conducted a comprehensive examination of changes in beta diversity over a decade (2009–2019) at 482 sites across five major river basins in South Korea and analyzed the changes in community concordance between freshwater fish and benthic macroinvertebrates. Temporal beta diversity for both fish and macroinvertebrate generally increased across all basins, suggesting continuous changes in their community composition over time. However, the rate and extent of these changes varied substantially among the basins. Moreover, turnover, a measure of species replacement, consistently exceeded nestedness, a measure of species loss or gain. This indicates that species replacement –especially from endemic and anthropogenic disturbance sensitive species to invasive and tolerant species – is the dominant process shaping the observed biodiversity patterns. Furthermore, the degree of similarity between fish and macroinvertebrate communities (i.e., concordance) showed a diverse pattern of changes across the basins, emphasizing that the annual rate of biodiversity change between two communities differs according to the basins. The study's results indicate that species replacements are the dominant force reshaping aquatic communities, with significant implications for ecological resilience and adaptive management. These findings underscore the necessity of continuous biological monitoring and further research incorporating comprehensive environmental data to better understand and mitigate the impacts of environmental changes on biodiversity.

Abstract Round goby (Neogobius melanostomus) is an invasive fish present in all five Great Lakes and is becoming increasingly common in their tributaries. Johnny darter (Etheostoma nigrum) is a native species that often coexists with N. melanostomus. In this work, historic factors are addressed as a source of genomic variation in study populations of these species. To do this, patterns of variation in the mitochondrial gene NADH dehydrogenase subunit 2 (ND2) were characterized for both species throughout Lower Michigan. Populations of N. melanostomus and E. nigrum were sampled from 17 localities representing both eastern and western basins of Lower Michigan to test the hypothesis that populations differ between the eastern and western basins of the Great Lakes. Neogobius melanostomus populations were largely homogenous with no significant differences detected among populations or between the eastern and western basins. Additionally, N. melanostomus exhibited no evidence of overarching historical genetic structure, consistent with the recent invasion and rapid expansion of this species. Etheostoma nigrum exhibited significant differentiation among local populations; however, similarity among mtDNA haplotypes indicated that differences among populations are recent, suggesting that local forces are a more important factor in shaping patterns of variation than historical factors. Contrary to predictions, there were no significant differences detected between the eastern and western basins of the Great Lakes; however, construction of a neighbor‐joining tree with FST estimates revealed clustering of populations by basin with some anomalies. These anomalies may be the result of recent stream capture events facilitating gene flow between the two basins.

ABSTRACT Optimal egg size theory implies that female organisms balance between fecundity and individual offspring investment according to their environment. Past interspecific studies suggest that fishes in large marine systems generally produce smaller eggs than those in small freshwater systems. We tested whether intraspecific egg size variation reflected a similar pattern by comparing egg size among yellow perch (Perca flavescens) populations inhabiting a range of system sizes. In 2018, 2019, and 2023, we collected yellow perch egg samples from 12 locations in systems ranging in surface area from 37 to 5,390,492 ha. First, we found that egg diameter significantly increased with maternal total length in five of eight individually tested populations. After accounting for these maternal effects, we found a significant interaction, where females inhabiting larger lakes, such as the main basins of Lakes Erie and Michigan, produced smaller eggs than those in smaller inland lakes, and the greatest differences were demonstrated among females of greater total length. This egg size variation in the largest females is consistent with interspecific egg size comparisons between marine and freshwater fishes. However, by examining a single species across vastly different environments, we were able to support theoretical expectations that maternal investment in offspring should vary with environmental conditions controlling early‐life resource acquisition and competition.

Abstract Background The invasion success of introduced freshwater fishes is influenced by many factors, including ecological, species, and socioeconomic characteristics. Most studies that document the importance of these characteristics are conducted at local scales and/or focus on a single step of the invasion process. In this study, we aim to determine the species characteristics, ecological characteristics, and socioeconomic characteristics of non-native freshwater fish invasions. Our assessment was done at the global scale and considers all three steps of the invasion (i.e., introduction, establishment, and impact). For this purpose, we applied generalized linear models to 20 variables collected for 307 non-native species and modeled them as a function of ecological characteristics (i.e., environmental features), species traits (i.e., functional and morphological), and socioeconomic characteristics (i.e., human use and introduction pathways). We considered the number of countries in which each species was introduced, established, or had ecological impacts as a proxy of invasion step success. We also explored the specifics of species introduced through the aquaculture and the ornamental fish trade pathways. Results We found that non-native freshwater fishes with broad diets, high parental care, and multiple introduction pathways are the most widely introduced and established worldwide. The number of countries with impacts reported was best explained by the type of introduction pathway (i.e., aquaculture or fisheries). Moreover, among non-native species introduced through aquaculture, those belonging to Cypriniformes and having broad diets were the most widely introduced and established species. In contrast, the species introduced through the ornamental fish trade pathway belonged to various taxonomic orders but were mainly native to tropical regions. Conclusions Considering several types of factors is important when analyzing the invasion success of freshwater fish and disentangling the different invasion steps. These findings have strong implications for anticipating the profile of species with a high potential to invade many countries.

Abstract Global biodiversity is facing an extinction crisis leading to increasing pressure on industries to monitor their potential environmental impact. Relatedly, there is demand for more efficient biodiversity monitoring methods, resulting in growing interest in the use of environmental DNA (eDNA). Many questions, however, regarding the reliability of this relatively novel method remain, particularly for non‐specialist end‐users of the technology. Here, the use of commercially available (in the UK) eDNA assays for monitoring freshwater fish and invertebrate biodiversity was compared to conventional surveillance techniques. Samples were collected from different habitats, on varying spatial scales and using multiple sampling regimes to assess how eDNA results were affected. For aquatic macroinvertebrates and fish, more taxa were detected by eDNA than conventional surveys conducted in parallel, and for fish, all taxa detected by conventional monitoring were confirmed by eDNA. For aquatic macroinvertebrates, several species were only detected through conventional methods, and the number of families detected by eDNA was lower than for conventional monitoring at all sites. eDNA results varied significantly between sampling locations within lentic sites and, for lotic sites, with the number of subsamples collected. Practical implication. This study demonstrates the need for bespoke sampling protocols when collecting eDNA samples. It also improves understanding of using eDNA for detecting aquatic taxa that could inform species surveillance protocols. These are essential if eDNA is to be used by practitioners as a regulatory monitoring tool.

Orestias (Cyprinodontiformes, Cyprinodontidae) is a diverse genus of freshwater fish endemic to the high Andean plateau (Altiplano) of the Andes Mountains, South America. Within the Altiplano, Orestias species form assemblages of varying taxonomic richness, exhibiting considerable diversity in morphological forms and sizes, and occupying different habitat types. Here, we investigate the functional diversity of Orestias assemblages in two basins within the Altiplano: Titicaca Lake and the southwestern Altiplano basins. Titicaca Lake is characterized by high species diversity that evolved sympatrically, while the southwestern Altiplano has lower species diversity that evolved allopatrically. Given that taxonomic diversity under sympatric conditions can promote greater functional diversity, we hypothesize that the Titicaca assemblage should display higher indicators of functional diversity. By using traits related to locomotion, food acquisition, and habitat type to quantify functional diversity we used four functional diversity indicators (functional richness, divergence, specialization, and originality) to compare the Orestias assemblages in two basins. We found no difference in functional divergence and originality between the Orestias from two basins. However, functional specialization was higher in the southwestern Altiplano, contrary to our hypothesis. Only functional richness was higher Titicaca assemblage; supporting our hypothesis. The differentiation between assemblages arises primarily from traits associated with locomotion and food acquisition. Several Orestias species are considered endangered and the extinction of any these taxa could impact the functional diversity of these basins.

Species resilience to diversified environments largely depends on their genetic diversity. Disentangling the respective roles of multiple landscape factors on population genetic variation could help us interpret the adaptive mechanism of species to environments, which is a central issue in evolutionary biology and biodiversity conservation. Herein, a typical Tibetan loach Triplophysa stenura was selected as study object to perform landscape genetics analyses inferred from mitochondrial cytochrome b gene sequences. Based on extensive sample collection, a total of 377 individuals from 20 sites in the Yarlung Tsangpo River were included in the analyses and results of genetic diversity assessment demonstrated relatively high haplotype diversity and low nucleotide diversity for most geographic populations. Genetic diversity pattern analysis proved that both haplotype and nucleotide diversity were greater in higher, colder and drier areas, which was consistent with the central-marginal hypothesis for this plateau hinterland-originated species. Degree of genetic differentiation among geographic populations varied from low level to extremely high level, with genetic variation coming mainly from within populations. Elevational and climatic divergences were detected to be principally responsible for the formation of population genetic structure of this species, coinciding with the isolation-by-environment model. On this basis, we put forward some applicable proposals that the marginal populations with relatively low elevations deserved more attentions in designing conservation scheme and those genetically differentiated populations should be treated as separate conservation units. In the context of global climate change and intensifying human activity, a sound genetic resources monitoring along elevational or climatic gradient is pivotal to develop future conservation interventions.

As predators are generally larger than their prey, positive body size and trophic position relationships are typically assumed, and these relationships have helped in estimating and predicting the effects of global environmental change on the trophic dynamics of aquatic ecosystems. However, current efforts to confirm the generality of body size-trophic position relationships have focused mainly on interspecific patterns using species-aggregated and averaged data, and little effort has been devoted to assessing how trophic position scales with body size at the intraspecific and community levels as well as exploring its ecological drivers, particularly for fishes in freshwater ecosystems. To fill this gap, we present a broad-scale study of body size-trophic position relationships in freshwater ecosystems at both the intraspecific and community levels using an individual-based body size and isotopic signature dataset that includes 2564 samples of 65 fish species in China. Our results indicate that body size-trophic position patterns at both the intraspecific and community levels can be positive, negative or insignificant. Non-significant patterns predominated at both levels, with slightly more than 30 % showing positive relationships, which highlights that the positive body size-trophic position pattern is not universally prevalent and that body size should be used with caution as a proxy for the trophic position of fishes at both the intraspecific and community levels in freshwater ecosystems. No factor was related to body size-trophic position patterns at the community level, while habitat type, elevation, temperature and fishing pressure were identified as the key determinants of body size-trophic position patterns at the intraspecific level, implying that fishing and climate warming can shift the food-web size structure of freshwater ecosystems by affecting population trophic dynamics.

Global changes are causing significant alterations to terrestrial, marine, and freshwater ecosystems worldwide, with substantial implications for plant and animal populations, potentially leading to species extinctions. While freshwater ecosystems are recognized as particularly vulnerable to these impacts, there has been limited research conducted in tropical regions on how these changes will affect them. Here, we assessed the relative impacts of change in climate and human population density on fish species distribution between current (1970–2000) and future (2050s) time periods in the Mekong River. We analyzed occurrence data for 195 fish species from 10 functional guilds and employed species distribution models (SDMs) to evaluate potential changes in fish species distribution under the independent and combined impacts of changes in climate and population density. Our results show that climate change, with significant change in temperature and precipitation rather than minor population shifts, will be the primary driver of future change in fish species distribution in the Mekong River with all fish guilds likely to expand their suitable habitats. However, contrasted distributional changes were observed among fish species, with certain guilds projected to gain more suitable habitat than others. Out of the 195 species examined, the majority of fish species studied (i.e., 84 %) are expected to undergo a northward distributional shift, while 49 species may experience a reduction in their suitable habitats. Additionally, significant declines in species richness are projected to occur in currently diverse areas (i.e., Tonle Sap Lake and River), while the highest increases in fish species richness are projected to occur in the 3S (Sesan, Sekong, and Srepok) River Basins. These findings highlight potential hotspots for mitigating the impacts of environmental changes, providing an opportunity for conservation practitioners and planners at the national and regional levels to develop and implement adaptation and mitigation measures.

Abstract: Aim This study evaluates the reproduction and fecundity of Leporinus lacustris in upper Paraná River floodplain environments with the objectives to (i) recognize the germ cells of folliculogenesis and oogenesis; (ii) characterize reproductive phases; (iii) investigate oocyte diameter and evaluate if this species has group synchronous or asynchronous oocyte development and if spawning is total or batch; (iv) estimate batch fecundity; (v) establish the relationship between fecundity/ovary weight, standard length, and total weight; (vi) verify the reproductive areas of this species in the upper Paraná River floodplain. Methods Sampling was carried out using gillnets in rivers, and open and closed lagoons, in March, June, September, and December 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2018, and 2019 and March and September 2017. A total of 442 females were sampled and 111 subsampled, each of which had an ovary removed and fixed in Bouin solution. A subsample of 20 ovaries in the spawning capable phase were fixed in a 4% buffered formaldehyde solution to estimate the diameter of the oocytes and fecundity. The ovaries were dehydrated, embedded in historesin, cut, stained, and evaluated as regards folliculogenesis, oogenesis, development phases, and reproduction areas. Results The germ cells recorded were differentiated oogonia, primary and secondary growth oocytes, fully-grown and mature oocytes, and post-ovulatory follicles that permitted the recognition of the reproductive phases. Oocyte diameter information revealed that the species has group synchronous oocyte development, determinate fecundity and batch spawning, and eliminates an average of 38,490 oocytes. Conclusions The fact that Leporinus lacustris is reproductively successful in the Baía River and in the Fechada, Guaraná, Patos, Garças, Ventura and Ressaco do Pau Véio lagoons strengthens the importance of the areas of environmental protection of the islands and lowlands of the Paraná River, Ilha Grande National Park and Ivinheima River State Park.

The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP) serves as the source of many large rivers in Asia, and also serves as a natural habitat for rare wildlife and a genetic reservoir for plateau species. The exceptional ecological environment of the QTP has fostered diverse fish species. However, due to climate change and human activities, fish species in this area are facing serious threats, while large spatial scale investigation is a big challenge. Environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding, as an innovative monitoring technology, offers a simple, fast, and environmentally friendly approach to explore fish communities on the QTP. This study utilized eDNA technology to assess the diversity, composition, and potential environmental influences of riverine fish communities across the QTP. A total of 90 fish species were identified belonging to 79 genera, 34 families, and 18 orders. The dominant species were Schizothorax chongi, Gymnocypris przewalskii, Carassius carassius, and Botia striata. PCoA and ADONIS indicated significant differences among fish community in different river basins of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) revealed that the ratio of SRP to TP, average NDVI, average elevation, and proportion of bare land significantly influenced the distribution of fish community. This study provided a novel monitoring method and insight for fish communities and implied potential species invasion on the QTP.

Abstract Identifying environmental drivers of demographic variation is key to predicting community‐level impacts in response to global change. Climate conditions can synchronize population trends and can occur both spatially for populations of the same species, and across multiple species within the same local community. The aim of this study was to investigate patterns of temporal variation in survival for freshwater fish communities in two geographically close but isolated sites and to understand the amount of variation accounted for by abiotic covariates including metrics of water temperature and stream flow. Using mark‐recapture data, we estimated bi‐monthly apparent survival in a Bayesian Cormack‐Jolly‐Seber framework. The model included random effects to quantify temporal variance to understand species synchrony with the rest of the fish community and between sites. Study species included bluehead chub (Nocomis leptocephalus), creek chub (Semotilus atromaculatus), and striped jumprock (Moxostoma rupiscartes) in the southeastern USA. Results showed that survival varied over time and periods of low survival were associated with higher mean water temperature. However, temporal patterns of survival differed among species and between sites, where survival was synchronous among species within a site but asynchronous between sites for the same species despite their spatial proximity. Study streams differed in summer thermal regimes, which resulted in contrasting summer survival patterns, suggesting sensitivity of these fishes to warming. We found that interspecific synchrony was greater than spatial synchrony, where regional drivers such as temperature may interact with local habitat leading to differences in survival patterns at fine spatial scales. Finally, these findings show that changes in the timing and magnitude of environmental conditions can be critical in limiting vital rates and that some populations may be more resilient to climate variation than others.

Stopping biodiversity loss due to human activities is of great concern for ensuring ecosystem services for sustainable development. While species-habitat relationships are an important aspect of species conservation, considering species interactions remains challenging in habitat suitability modelling due to the complex nature of the species’ ecology and uncertainties present in ecological data. To cope with this challenge, a Random Forests (RF) multi-class classifier is built using a data set comprised of monthly fish habitat surveys conducted over a period of two years for analyzing the 16 co-occurrence patterns among four fish species, including endangered species and translocated domestic alien species, in a small spring-fed river in Japan. This multi-class habitat suitability model allows for assessing the instream habitat conditions under which multiple species co-occur. Variable importance and partial dependence plots are generated to extract ecological information for a deeper understanding of the species co-occurrence patterns. Results show that the model performance is greatly influenced by data prevalence as reported for single-species habitat suitability models. Ecological information extracted from the RF model illustrates instream habitat conditions that are important for each of the co-occurrence patterns. Such information can be used for prioritizing conservation sites and better designing habitat conditions in order for multiple native species to co-occur or for preventing non-native species to expand their distribution ranges.

Unraveling the drivers that shape landscape genetics could help better understand the relationship between genetic structure and environmental factors and provide a scientific basis for wildlife conservation and habitat management. In this study, a typical coldwater fish on the Tibetan Plateau, Schizopygopsis younghusbandi, was selected to explore its spatial genetic structure and the determinant factors using mitochondrial cytochrome b gene as the molecular marker. The results showed a total of 80 haplotypes and 90 variable sites among 663 individuals from 25 geographical populations, with haplotype diversities (Hd) ranging from 0.636 to 0.936 and nucleotide diversities (Pi) ranging from 0.00160 to 0.00450. Significant positive correlations were observed between Hd and spatial factors (longitude and elevation) as well as the majority of single or combined bioclimatic factors. The correlations between Pi and these factors were inconclusive, revealing that Hd was more sensitive than Pi to population dynamic fluctuations. The phenomenon of greater genetic diversity in higher, colder and drier areas was consistent with the central-marginal hypothesis for this highland-origin species. The majority of genetic differentiation indices Fst indicated moderate differentiation, showing genetic heterogeneity among geographical populations. Fst was positively correlated with variations of elevation and the first principal component of bioclimatic factors, showing a weakly positive relationship with river-network distance, which demonstrated that the Isolation-by-Environment model could explain this genetic structure. In conclusion, as a highly specialized coldwater fish, S. younghusbandi retained higher genetic diversity in higher, colder and drier areas, and population differentiation was mostly related to differences of local bioclimate. For future conservation, we advocate that different geographical populations be treated as separate conservation units, with close attention paid to marginal populations, which are more vulnerable to external disturbances and exhibited less genetic variation.

Abstract Given the sharp increase in agricultural and infrastructure development and the paucity of widespread data available to support conservation management decisions, a more rapid and accurate tool for identifying fish fauna in the world's largest freshwater ecosystem, the Amazon, is needed. Current strategies for identification of freshwater fishes require high levels of training and taxonomic expertise for morphological identification or genetic testing for species recognition at a molecular level. To overcome these challenges, we built an image masking model (U‐Net) and a convolutional neural net (CNN) to classify Amazonian fish in photographs. Fish used to generate training data were collected and photographed in tributaries in seasonally flooded forests of the upper Morona River valley in Loreto, Peru in 2018 and 2019. Species identifications in the training images (n = 3068) were verified by expert ichthyologists. These images were supplemented with photographs taken of additional Amazonian fish specimens housed in the ichthyological collection of the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History. We generated a CNN model that identified 33 genera of fishes with a mean accuracy of 97.9%. Wider availability of accurate freshwater fish image recognition tools, such as the one described here, will enable fishermen, local communities, and citizen scientists to more effectively participate in collecting and sharing data from their territories to inform policy and management decisions that impact them directly.

Gymnogeophagus is a genus of fish from the family Cichlidae present in freshwaters from Southern South America, and the knowledge on its parasite communities is rather scarce. Therefore, the present study evaluated, for the first time, the parasite community of G. balzanii. Fish were collected in the Pantanal wetlands, State of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil and analysed for metazoan parasites. Ten taxa (larvae and adult) were found including Nematoda (3), Digenea (5), Copepoda (1) and Monogenea (1). All taxa were aggregated within the host population, few showed high prevalence and all had low abundance. The parasite community was composed by few specialists and several generalist and characterised by low richness, diversity and, consequently high dominance of few species and low evenness. These characteristics are typical of isolationist parasite communities. The predominance of larval forms indicates that G. balzanii occupies a lower position within the food chain, acting as an important link for trophic relations. Host length and weight were strong determinants in the parasite community, making fish sex also important since males were significantly longer and heavier than females. Generally, the parasite fauna did not influence host body condition, indicating no apparent debility. Presence of Clinostomum metacercariae is important for human health issues. Grass carp, a native Chinese freshwater fish species, has been widely introduced and established worldwide for different purposes (protein source, weed control agent, and sport fish). This species can be very effective in controlling aquatic plants. A few countries, such as Afghanistan, Myanmar, Laos and Vietnam, have cultured grass carp as human food for decades. In contrast, other countries, such as Bangladesh, India, and Iran, initially cultured grass carp as weed control agents and later transitioned to using them as food fish. The uncontrolled population of grass carp and the adverse ecological effects cause concern. Grass carp are a source of nutrients, including essential omega‐3 fatty acids, eicosapentaenoicacid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), which greatly benefit human health. Farming and consuming low trophic‐level fish is more sustainable than relying on high trophic‐level fish. A sustainable Polyculture system yields positive social, economic, ecological and aquaculture outcomes. It involves culturing grass carp together with filter‐feeding fish of different ecological requirements, feeding habits and behaviours in the same pond. The application of sustainable feeding materials (e.g., food processing waste and food waste‐based fish feed pellets) may significantly improve sustainable aquaculture. Two genera of fish, Orestias (Cyprinodontidae) and Trichomycterus (Trichomicteridae), inhabit in the Lauca National Park, UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, located at the Andes highlands in northern Chile. The present study analyzed the length-weight relationship for four native species of Orestias (O. parinacotensis, O. laucaensis, O. chungarensis and O. piacotensis) and two native species of Tricomycterius (T. chungaraensis and T. laucaensis), obtained at seven different localities. Our results showed that the growth coefficient values “b” for Orestias ranged from 2.89 (O. parinacotensis) through 4.04 (O. piacotensis) and Trichomycterus between 2.53 (T. laucaensis in Parinacota wetland) through 3.14 (T. laucaensis in Caquena River). All length-weight relationships were significant (p < 0.01), with r2 higher than 0.82. O. laucaensis, O. piacotensis and T. chungaraensis showed positive allometric growth (b > 3). However, two species O. parinacotensis and T. laucaensis showed negative allometric growth (b < 3). Only O. chungarensis showed isometric growth with b = 3. Intense anthropic activity, exotic fish introduction, and climate change present important risks for a unique endemic fish community of the high Andes.

Norwegian freshwater systems are in general species poor. That is particularly the case for the freshwater fishes. Only 32 species are considered native, whereas an additional 12 species are non-native. Some of the non-native species are also considered to be invasive and have negative ecosystem effects. Freshwater fishes are exposed to numerous stressors through their life cycle, many of which are of anthropogenic origin. In order to manage and conserve the diversity of fish there is a need for basic knowledge and understanding. Here I make an effort to review the published research on all Norwegian freshwater fish species during the 1980-2020 period, based on a standardized search on the Web of Science. Over 2000 relevant articles were retrieved and evaluated following the search. The research activity has been highly biased, with most research activity directed at a few species of high economic and societal value. Most work was directed at Atlantic salmon Salmo salar and brown trout S. trutta, and in general towards species within the salmonid family. Extremely little attention was directed at species such as the lampreys (four species) and sculpins (three species). Also, many species that has been listed on the Norwegian Red List during various time periods has not been given any particular attention. This lack of attention was also evident for most of the non-native species. The strong bias in research activity and lack of attention given to many species will clearly lead to difficulties in making appropriate management decisions. This is unfortunate, in particular in a time when climate change may lead to numerous ecosystem level changes.

Although the concept of trophic interactions has been used for a long time, there are still considerable gaps in our understanding of the effect of various environmental factors on trophic interactions within river fish assemblages. Carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) stable isotope ratios of 20 species of fish belonging to both eurytopic and rheophilic ecological groups from a large temperate rivers were used to evaluate overall trophic niche use and trophic position of species, and to find out how environmental variability associated with nutrient loading affects individual and community-wide aspects of trophic structure. The study was carried out at 11 sites along the European rivers Vltava and Elbe, representing a continuous gradient of pollution and habitat degradation. Corrected Standard Ellipse Area (SEAc) was significantly larger for the group of eurytopic ecological species than for rheophilic species. Despite narrower isotopic niche space, rheophilic fish species occupied a higher trophic position, suggesting that these species use resources more enriched in 15N. Of the 11 environmental variables tested, nutrients had a significant effect on trophic niche area of species (SEAc), indicating that eutrophication is of critical importance for fish assemblages. Isotopic niche area of species was found to be positively influenced by total phosphorus, and negatively affected by concentrations of nitrate (N-NO3−) and ammonia (N-NH4+). A negative association between oxygen demand and a measure of trophic diversity - mean distance to centroid (CD)- and a measure of density and clustering of species - mean nearest neighbor distance (MNND)- were found, indicating that the oxygen demand is a key factor influencing community trophic structure. An observed pattern where nutrient loading influenced both individual species and trophic structure of the fish assemblage provides strong support for an anthropogenic influence on riverine food webs.

Monogenea is a taxon containing flatworms that are primarily parasites of the skin and gills of fish. The African tetra, Brycinus kingsleyae (Günther, 1896), is a commercial fish species in artisanal fisheries in Southern Cameroon. Although the gill monogeneans of this fish species have been described, no ecological research has been carried out on this component community. The present study was conducted in the Nyong River to provide the first data about some factors that influence the structure of its infracommunities. In dry seasons, 70 fish specimens consisting of 27 males and 43 females of fork length between 9.5 and 14.1 cm were sampled. The analysis of their gill filament number indicated that the gill system of B. kingsleyae is heterogeneous because this factor varies with the length of the fish and depends on the gill arch. The studied guild consisted only of core species: Annulotrema combesi Birgi, 1988, Annulotrema maillardi Birgi, 1988, Annulotrema nyongensis Birgi, 1988, Annulotrema bouixi Birgi, 1988, and Characidotrema regia Birgi, 1988. The number of gill filaments and the parasitic load increased with the fish length, indicating that larger hosts provide a greater diversity of niches for parasites. Monogenean species exhibit various occupation patterns of gill arches, sectors, zones and gender differences in parasitological indices. This study reveals that the host length and sex, filament number, gill arch, sector and zone are largely responsible for structuring the studied component community. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Changes in connectivity regimes affect patterns of diversity and species richness. In riverine ecosystems, factors that vary through space and time, such as flow, the presence of barriers to movement, and network topology determine connectivity, and in turn shape patterns of diversity and richness. While the effects of network topology and changes in spatiotemporal connectivity regimes on patterns of species richness have been studied in isolation, they have not been studied simultaneously. We used a discrete‐time logistic growth metacommunity model to analyze the role of spatial and temporal functional connectivity in determining patterns of local (patch level) species richness in freshwater fish metacommunities. Our modeling suggests that: (1) the effect of spatial loss of connectivity on local species richness is mediated by network topology and where richness is measured in the system and (2) increasing temporal autocorrelation in connectivity results in increasing temporal autocorrelation in patch occupancy. Spatial and temporal loss of connectivity is a ubiquitous issue for river ecosystems, making understanding and predicting its effects of fundamental importance to both improving theory and guiding river management. Our findings highlight the importance of network topology (and hence context dependency) in shaping metacommunity response to changing connectivity regimes.

Abstract Background The circadian clock is a biological timing system that improves the ability of organisms to deal with environmental fluctuations. At the molecular level it consists of a network of transcription-translation feedback loops, involving genes that activate (bmal and clock – positive loop) and repress expression (cryptochrome (cry) and period (per) – negative loop). This is regulated by daily alternations of light but can also be affected by temperature. Fish, as ectothermic, depend on the environmental temperature and thus are good models to study its integration within the circadian system. Here, we studied the molecular evolution of circadian genes in four Squalius freshwater fish species, distributed across Western Iberian rivers affected by two climatic types with different environmental conditions (e.g., light and temperature). S. carolitertii and S. pyrenaicus inhabit the colder northern region under Atlantic climate type, while S. torgalensis, S. aradensis and some populations of S. pyrenaicus inhabit the warmer southern region affected by summer droughts, under Mediterranean climate type. Results We identified 16 circadian-core genes in the Squalius species using a comparative transcriptomics approach. We detected evidence of positive selection in 12 of these genes using methods based on dN/dS. Positive selection was mainly found in cry and per genes of the negative loop, with 55 putatively adaptive substitutions, 16 located on protein domains. Evidence for positive selection is predominant in southern populations affected by the Mediterranean climate type. By predicting protein features we found that changes at sites under positive selection can impact protein thermostability by changing their aliphatic index and isoelectric point. Additionally, in nine genes, the phylogenetic clustering of species that belong to different clades but inhabit southern basins with similar environmental conditions indicated evolutionary convergence. We found evidence for increased nonsynonymous substitution rate in convergent lineages, likely due to positive selection at 27 sites, mostly in cry genes. Conclusions Our results support that temperature may be a selective pressure driving the evolution of genes involved in the circadian system. By integrating sequence-based functional protein prediction with dN/dS-based methods to detect selection we uncovered adaptive convergence in the southern populations, probably related to their similar thermal conditions.

Abstract The natural distributions of freshwater fish species are limited by their thermal tolerances via physiological constraints and increased interspecific competition as temperatures shift toward the thermal optima of other syntopic species. Species may mediate stress from temperature change physiologically, behaviorally, or both; but these changes may compromise competitive advantages through effects on feeding and social behavior. In the Appalachian Mountains of North America, creek chub (Semotilus atromaculatus) are found in warm‐water and cold‐water streams and overlap in range with brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) across lower thermal maxima, where they compete for food and space. As stream temperatures continue to increase due to climate change, brook trout are under increasing thermal stress which may negatively affect their ability to compete with creek chub. To examine the influences of temperature on competitive interactions between these species, we observed feeding behavior, aggression, and habitat use differences at three temperatures approaching brook trout thermal maxima (18°C, 20°C, and 22°C) among dyad pairs for all combinations of species in experimental flow‐through tanks. We also examined feeding and habitat use of both species under solitary conditions. We found as temperature increased, feeding and aggression of brook trout were significantly reduced in the presence of creek chub. Creek chub pairs were more likely to occupy benthic areas and refugia while brook trout pairs used surface water more. Space use patterns significantly changed by pairing treatment. Aggression and space use shifts allowed increased exploitative and interference competition from creek chub when paired with brook trout that was not present in conspecific pairs. The decreased dominance of a top predator may lead to diverse impacts on stream community dynamics with implications for the future range restriction of brook trout and demonstrate possible mechanisms to facilitate competitive advantages of warm water generalist species under thermal stress.

Abstract: Aim We characterize the diet and trophic guild to the fish community in a protected area to contribute information about the trophic ecology. Methods The collection was carried out at three sampling points, in 2017 and 2018, with the help of gill nets. The collected specimens were euthanized in a 0.5% benzocaine solution. In the laboratory, all specimens' stomachs were removed, fixed in a 4% formalin solution, and preserved in 70% alcohol. Stomach contents were examined, and the food items were identified to the lowest possible taxonomic level. Food items were quantified according to the volumetric method. The characterization of the diet was presented through the percentage volume of each food item consumed. To determination of the trophic guild of each species, the predominance of a type of food resource (> 51% of the total volume) in the population's diet was considered. Results The species' diets were distributed in 16 food items (predominance of decapods, fish fragments, terrestrial insects, and aquatic plants), and four trophic guilds were observed (carcinophage, piscivore, terrestrial insectivore, and herbivore). Furthermore, there was the occurrence of microplastic in the diet of three species. Conclusions the fish community evaluated here demonstrates the wide range of resources that can make up the fish diet and demonstrates the different trophic guilds that can be observed in a protected area. As it is a conservation unit, knowing the diet and trophic guilds that make up the fish community can contribute to understanding the dynamics of food chains, the structure of the community, and the functioning of the ecosystem. Thus, this work can contribute information about the biology of the species evaluated for future work and conservation programs.

Abstract The European weather loach (Misgurnus fossilis) is classified as highly endangered in several countries of Central Europe. Populations of M. fossilis are predominantly found in ditches with low water levels and thick sludge layers and are thus hard to detect using conventional fishing methods. Therefore, environmental DNA (eDNA) monitoring appears particularly relevant for this species. In previous studies, M. fossilis was surveyed following eDNA water sampling protocols, which were not optimized for this species. Therefore, we created two full factorial study designs to test six different eDNA workflows for sediment samples and twelve different workflows for water samples. We used qPCR to compare the threshold cycle (Ct) values of the different workflows, which indicate the target DNA amount in the sample, and spectrophotometry to quantify and compare the total DNA amount inside the samples. We analyzed 96 water samples and 48 sediment samples from a pond with a known population of M. fossilis. We tested several method combinations for long‐term sample preservation, DNA capture, and DNA extraction. Additionally, we analyzed the DNA yield of samples from a ditch with a natural M. fossilis population monthly over one year to determine the optimal sampling period. Our results showed that the long‐term water preservation method commonly used for eDNA surveys of M. fossilis did not lead to optimal DNA yields, and we present a valid long‐term sample preservation alternative. A cost‐efficient high salt DNA extraction led to the highest target DNA yields and can be used for sediment and water samples. Furthermore, we were able to show that in a natural habitat of M. fossilis, total and target eDNA were higher between June and September, which implies that this period is favorable for eDNA sampling. Our results will help to improve the reliability of future eDNA surveys of M. fossilis.

Abstract Phenotypic divergence in response to divergent natural selection between environments is a common phenomenon in species of freshwater fishes. Intraspecific differentiation is often pronounced between individuals inhabiting lakes versus stream habitats. The different hydrodynamic regimes in the contrasting habitats may promote a variation of body shape, but this could be intertwined with morphological adaptations to a specific foraging mode. Herein, I studied the divergence pattern of the European minnow (Phoxinus phoxinus), a common freshwater fish that has received little attention despite its large distribution. In many Scandinavian mountain lakes, European minnows are considered as being invasive and were found to pose threats to the native fish populations due to resource competition. Minnows were recently found to show phenotypic adaptations in lake versus stream habitats, but the question remained if this divergence pattern is related to differences in resource use. I therefore studied the patterns of minnow divergence in morphology (i.e., using geometric morphometrics) and trophic niches (i.e., using stomach content analyses) in the lake Ånnsjön and its tributaries to link the changes in body morphology to the feeding on specific resources. Lake minnows showed a strong reliance on benthic Cladocera and a more streamlined body shape with a more upward facing snout, whereas stream minnows fed on macroinvertebrates (larvae and adults) to a higher degree and had a deeper body with a snout that was pointed down. Correlations showed a significant relationship of the proportion of macroinvertebrates in the gut and morphological features present in the stream minnows. The results of this study highlight the habitat‐specific divergence pattern in morphology and resource use in this ubiquitous freshwater fish. Consequently, interspecific interactions of invasive minnows and the native fish population could differ in the respective food webs and resource competition could target different native fish species in the contrasting habitats.

Abstract Life history theory provides a framework to understand environmental change based on species strategies for survival and reproduction under stable, cyclical, or stochastic environmental conditions. We evaluated environmental predictors of fish life history strategies in 20 streams intersecting a national park within the Potomac River basin in eastern North America. We sampled stream sites during 2018–2019 and collected 3801 individuals representing 51 species within 10 taxonomic families. We quantified life history strategies for species from their coordinates in an ordination space defined by trade‐offs in spawning season duration, fecundity, and parental care characteristic of opportunistic, periodic, and equilibrium strategies. Our analysis revealed important environmental predictors: Abundance of opportunistic strategists increased with low‐permeability soils that produce flashy runoff dynamics and decreased with karst terrain (carbonate bedrock) where groundwater inputs stabilize stream flow and temperature. Conversely, abundance of equilibrium strategists increased in karst terrain indicating a response to more stable environmental conditions. Our study indicated that fish community responses to groundwater and runoff processes may be explained by species traits for survival and reproduction. Our findings also suggest the utility of life history theory for understanding ecological responses to destabilized environmental conditions under global climate change.

DNA-based taxon identification is improving the assessment and management of biodiversity in rivers. However, the lack of comprehensive DNA barcode reference libraries and globally highly unequal coverage are still hindering the application prospects of this method worldwide. Here, we analyzed the COI barcode gap in two reference libraries, Barcode of Life Data Systems (BOLD) and NCBI GenBank, with a focus on three aquatic animal groups (freshwater fish, aquatic insects and molluscs) in Chinese rivers. Our data show gaps in barcode coverage (e.g., organisms without barcodes) of ca. 40–70% of taxa in these groups in the BOLD or NCBI GenBank database, respectively. These gaps can rise even further if the barcode thresholds are set to contain at least five reference sequences per taxon. Furthermore, most barcodes are from non-local samples, and only 14.4% (BOLD) and 28.8% (NCBI GenBank) of reference sequences were from organisms sampled in China, respectively. The pairwise genetic distance of local barcodes is 3 to 5 times lower than non-local barcodes, indicating that the latter may not be a good substitute. When looking at individual catchments, ca. 60% of the potentially occurring aquatic species have one or more barcodes, yet the barcode coverage varies slightly across ten major river catchments, ranging from 54.3% (Liao River basin) to 68.2% (Huai River basin). The taxa Salmoniformes and Perciformes in freshwater fish, Odonata and Diptera in aquatic insects, and Bivalvia in molluscs have the best barcode coverage in most catchments (mean coverage >70%). This study gives the first overview and current status of barcode reference libraries of three major aquatic animal groups in Chinese rivers. Our results will help to better interpret current metabarcoding studies from China, and also provide a basis to develop a strategy of filling the gaps in the reference libraries of aquatic species in China.

Dispersal is an essential life-history trait crucial to species persistence and diversification. This is particularly important in spatiotemporal fluctuating environments such as freshwater habitats, where species movement is confined to the dendritic network and wetted boundaries. To persist in such fluctuating environments, a species can modify, adaptively and plastically, its phenotypic variation to better match the environment or escape via directed dispersal to a more suitable habitat (i.e., matching habitat choice). We use the invasive smallmouth bass, Micropterus dolomieu, sampled at 10 km intervals, to assess the effect of directed dispersal on the fine scale genetic and phenotypic variation in populations of M. dolomieu along a river course. Gene flow was used as a proxy for dispersal. By comparing population genetic structure, morphological variation (of linear traits and geometric landmarks), and environmental heterogeneity, we discovered a clear correlation between environmental variation and morphological traits. Although isolation by distance seemed to have shaped the overall genetic pattern detected among the populations, the strong genetic structuring observed within the Ratel tributary appeared to be non-random. These results provide novel insights into the potential mechanisms promoting the spread and establishment of invasive species and the possible influence multiple introductions may have on fine scale genetic structuring.

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in biota are influenced by ecological, physiological, and physicochemical properties; however, there is a need for a better understanding about the interplay of these parameters on POP dynamics and fate. To address this, POPs in three Lake Erie freshwater fishes (freshwater drum, Aplodinotus grunniens; walleye, Sander vitreus; and white perch, Morone americana) with different feeding ecologies were assessed using life history characteristics and three stable isotopes (δ13C, δ15N, and δ34S). Lipid normalized POP concentrations were in the range of past studies and were generally similar among the three species when all ages were combined. Principal component analysis (PCA) found the two significant PCs (explaining 59% and 10% of the variation), with all POPs loading significantly onto PC1, which indicated a common source of contamination, likely legacy sediment loads. Loadings on both PCs were correlated with POP log KOW. Age, habitat use (δ13C and δ34S), trophic position (δ15N) and interactions between age and δ15N, age and species, and δ15N and δ34S were significant predictors of POP concentration based on PC1 scores, whereas δ13C and species were significant predictors of PC2 scores. The similar concentrations among the species, yet variation related to the ecology (age and trophic position) across individuals demonstrates the complexity of contaminant dynamics in freshwater fish in a large lake system and the need to consider variation across individuals within species. Beardless Barb Cyclocheilichthys apogon (Valenciennes, 1842) is a species known from Southeast Asia, including Western Indonesia area (Borneo, Sumatra and Java). In Java Island, it was previously found in the mainland area. This paper provides the first record of C. apogon in the Lembung River, one of the major rivers in Madura Island, thereby extending the species distribution up to 150 km northeast from the earlier record. The specimens of C. apogon were characterized as follows: dorsal fin rays 12; anal fin rays 8–9; pectoral fin rays 17–18; lateral line scales 34–35. A description of detailed morfological characters of a specimen are provided.

Over the past several decades, ecologists have been striving to develop models that accurately describe species-habitat relationships across ecological communities. Statistical models that explain ecological dynamics need to consider the nuances of the complex interactions between communities and ecological factors. Here, we used multiple linear mixed models (LMM), generalized additive models (GAM), multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARS), and artificial neural networks (ANN) to model species richness and diversity of freshwater fishes in eastern and central India. The models were based on fish abundance and associated ecological data over three years across the study regions. We developed global models using all predictors after removing highly correlated variables (Pearson’s r > 0.7). Results revealed conductivity, water temperature, and water velocity as the most important predictive factors of both species richness and diversity. We, then, built two subsets of selected factors to build predictive models for diversity and richness- one variable set containing common significant factors as revealed from the four different modeling methods used and the second, using an automatic feature selection technique. Amongst the modeling methods used in our study, ANN was found to create the best fit models for explaining nonlinearities between response variables and predictors. The importance of variable selection is highlighted, given that subset 1 (common consensual factors) creates more homogeneity in predictions compared to using subset 2 (automated feature selection). Contrary to similar studies in recent years, which show machine learning (ML) methods to typically outperform conventional methods, our results revealed that ANN performed at par with other methods in terms of predictive power. Our findings underline the need for a judicious choice of modeling techniques based on the availability of the data and the ecological communities being studied.

According to the niche variation hypothesis (NVH), the populations with wider niches are phenotypically more variable than those with narrow niches. Giller expanded the NVH, suggesting that the niche width, morphological variation, and genetic diversity are all positively correlated. However, the hypothesis has been a subject of debate and discussion. In the present study, the NVH was tested by analyzing the relationships among trophic niche width, morphological variation, and genetic diversity of Hemiculter leucisculus, a widespread cyprinid fish. The fish samples were collected from six sites across Haihe, the Yellow, and the Yangtze River basins in China. The relationships among trophic niche width, morphological variation, and genetic diversity were analyzed using Pearson correlation at the inter-population level. Our analysis indicated that trophic niche width is significantly positively correlated with morphological variation, which corroborates the NVH. Morphological variation was significantly correlated to genetic diversity. However, no relationship was observed between trophic niche width and genetic diversity. We inferred that the dietary niche of H. leucisculus might change due to the plastic response toward environmental changes rather than due to the genetic variation. We also suggest that the effects of environment and heredity on the niche of the freshwater fish should be quantified separately in further studies.

Badis badis (Hamilton, 1822), a freshwater fish species, has been reported for the first time from the Godavari River basin of Telangana State, India. One specimen of B. badis was collected from a stream near Mubarakpur Village in Sangareddy District (Manjeera sub-basin) and another from a stream near Sirpur (T) Town in Asifabad District (Wardha sub-basin), Telangana State, India. This publication provides information about B. badis occurrence in India, a short description of the collected specimen, and a discussion on its habitat and threats.

Abstract Freshwater ecosystems have been substantially altered, threatening the survival and recovery of aquatic species at risk. Estimating the likelihood and magnitude of future extinctions (extinction debt; ED) is integral for conserving biodiversity and requires accurate species composition lists. Using species‐area relationships, we estimated ED for fishes in historically disturbed wetlands in the Lake Erie basin. Then, we used simulated data sets to assess how ED varied when species lists used to derive species‐area relationships had an increasing proportion of undetected species. When species lists were incomplete, ranging from 0.99 to 0.75, 15% fewer wetlands were estimated to have species in ED and, on average, 50% fewer species were expected to go extinct per wetland. Imperfect detection ultimately biased conservation prioritization among wetlands. Our findings suggest that if imperfect detection is not accounted for when projecting future extinctions, the severity of future species loss across a landscape, and the subsequent need for immediate restorative action, can be greatly underestimated.

Acid deposition, resulting from the atmospheric transport of acidifying compounds emitted during the combustion of fossil fuels, has historically resulted in stream acidification in many headwater streams in the eastern United States, including streams in Shenandoah National Park (SHEN). Though restrictions on these emissions were established by an amendment to the Clean Air Act in 1990, reductions in stream acidification have not been observed in all regions of SHEN due to variations in the geological composition of SHEN watersheds. Before the implementation of these restrictions, fish assemblages were strongly controlled by a stream’s acid neutralizing capacity (ANC), which is the ability of a watershed to buffer acid inputs. This study investigated changes in the relationship between fish assemblages and ANC within SHEN 21 years after implementation of more stringent restrictions on the emission of sulfur and nitrogen oxides in 1995. Results indicated that recovery trends in water chemistry were observed in some SHEN watersheds; however, fish species richness and total fish biomass continue to be influenced by the legacy of acid deposition in acid sensitive watersheds. Temporal trend analysis indicated little change in ANC within acid sensitive watersheds and minor decreases in stream sulfate concentrations. These findings indicate a persistent impact from previously deposited sulfur oxides and the continued influence of these compounds on fish assemblages within SHEN. Though no further loss of fish species, and in some cases, increases in species richness, suggest the early stages of recovery, many SHEN streams remain as susceptible to acidification as they were over two decades ago, highlighting the need for continued regulation of acidifying emissions and conservation efforts in headwater streams.

The construction of estuary sluice has profound and adverse biological consequences through its effect on the hydrodynamic process and salinity gradient. Environmental flow plays an essential role in the conservation of the ecological environment, but its calculation methods remain biased towards the traditional single-target fish species. Consequently, these flows ignore the ecological requirements of different biological communities and therefore disregard the long-term perspective of the riverine and estuarine ecosystem. Actually, we found that once the sluice was built, the available habitat throughout the river would show a degradation by 81.55% for fish that produce floating eggs and 14.25% for fish that produce sticky eggs. In addition, changes in the distribution of salinity in estuaries and coastal waters caused by the closure of sluice indicated that the habitats of fish living in low-salinity areas would disappear. This study proposes an ecologically oriented multi-sluice system operation strategy that integrates the demands of fish with different living habits on environmental flow into the joint operation of a multi-sluice system to maintain different ecological functions throughout the Yongjiang River basin. The spawning habits of fish in the study area were investigated, and the differences in their adaptability to various hydrological factors were summarized. MIKE 21 model and PHABSIM were used to ascertain the environmental flow through the data of velocity, water depth, and salinity. Model predictions of the effective habitat were supplemented by the optimum selection, and the discharge of the Fenghua River was suggested to be 105 m3/s. Likewise, the survival salinity requirements revealed that the discharge of Yongjiang sluice should reach 250–300 m3/s. Results were used to design the joint ecological scheduling schemes, with the aiming of ensuring that the flow velocity of the entire migration channel can meet the requirements of facilitating the upstream movement of fish whilst keeping eggs floating. In the Considering the upstream ability of fish, the tidal law of the estuary and the planned discarded water of estuary sluice, it is suggested that during the spawning time, seven consecutive days of the ebb tide should be selected to carry out the joint operation of Fenghua, Yaojiang and Yongjiang River, and the flow constraint factors are 105, 100 and 250 m3/s, respectively.

The composition of intestinal microbiota commonly varies among animal hosts and may affect host health. However, we have limited knowledge about the different relative roles of assembly processes, such as drift, dispersal and environmental selection, for the composition of gut microbiota. Here, we conducted a field study analyzing intestinal microbial communities of two fish species that either have (perch) or lack (roach) a stomach. We used a suite of statistical tools to evaluate the role of different assembly processes for intestine microbiota, including null model analysis (Chase et al., 2011; Fine and Kembel, 2011; Stegen et al., 2013), SourceTracker analysis (Knights et al., 2011) and several multivariate analyses, such as pRDA and PLS analysis. Drift, dispersal (i.e., microbes associated with food sources) and environmental factors (i.e., diet, host habitats), appeared to be of equal importance for the assembly of intestinal microbial communities in roach, while drift appeared most important in perch, followed by dispersal and environmental selection. Furthermore, we found that microbes associated with macroinvertebrates had a positive association to fish body condition (weight/length3) whereas microbes associated with zooplankton had a negative association to fish body condition. These results emphasize the important combined roles of drift, dispersal and environmental selection in shaping the host-associated microbial communities. We conclude that general conclusions about fish as a whole are not justified since different species differ in the relative roles of these important drivers of community assembly.

Abstract Predator–prey relationships are important ecological interactions, affecting biotic community composition and energy flow through a system, and are of interest to ecologists and managers. Morphological diet analysis has been the primary method used to quantify the diets of predators, but emerging molecular techniques using genetic data can provide more accurate estimates of relative diet composition. This study used sequences from the 18S V9 rRNA barcoding region to identify prey items in the gastrointestinal (GI) tracts of predatory fishes. Predator GI samples were taken from the Black River, Cheboygan Co., MI, USA (n = 367 samples, 12 predator species) during periods of high prey availability, including the larval stage of regionally threatened lake sturgeon (Acipenser fulvescens Rafinesque 1817) in late May/early June of 2015 and of relatively lower prey availability in early July of 2015. DNA was extracted and sequenced from 355 samples (96.7%), and prey DNA was identified in 286 of the 355 samples (80.6%). Prey were grouped into 33 ecologically significant taxonomic groups based on the lowest taxonomic level sequences that could be identified using sequences available on GenBank. Changes in the makeup of diet composition, dietary overlap, and predator preference were analyzed comparing the periods of high and low prey abundance. Some predator species exhibited significant seasonal changes in diet composition. Dietary overlap was slightly but significantly higher during the period of high prey abundance; however, there was little change in predator preference. This suggests that change in prey availability was the driving factor in changing predator diet composition and dietary overlap. This study demonstrates the utility of molecular diet analysis and how temporal variability in community composition adds complexity to predator–prey interactions.

The Jaguar cichlid, Parachromis managuensis (Günther, 1867), is native to Central America, with introduc­tions reported from West Java and Central Java Provinces of Indonesia. On 7-8 January 2019, sixteen specimens of P. managuensis were collected from Karangkates, the largest hydropower reservoir in East Java Province of Indonesia. A description of the morphological characters of specimens is provided.

Freshwater fish fauna of Nandur-Madhmeshwar wetland was studied during the period 2010–2012. A total of 39 species of freshwater fish belonging to 14 families and 30 genera were recorded. Out of the 39 species, 21 species are reported for the first time from this wetland, which includes Mystus malabaricus, an endemic species of the Western Ghats. The fish fauna of the wetland is threatened due to invasive alien species as well as anthropogenic activities such as overfishing, sand mining, siltation, and organic and inorganic pollution. As a result, urgent implementations of stringent conservation measures are essential.
