This article explores the emergence and transformation of the sustainability discourse in the aftermath of the post-war boom and growth of neoliberalism in Australia. It reflects on the way in which the state of play has evolved in the country. It also assesses whether or not sustainable development is a useful concept for the achievement of ecological sustainability. The way in which the economy-environment problematic was re-conceptualized during the period is analyzed. The article concludes by explaining the influence of the imperatives of capital accumulation on environmental priorities.

Severe problems of fragmented policies and uncoordinated implementation undermine natural resource management in Australia. There have been promising signs of progress through activities such as the National Forest Policy, Council of Australian Government water reforms, National Land and Water Resources Audit, the Murray- Darling Basin initiative and the National Action Plan for Salinity and Water Quality to integrate resource policies. There have also been some notable successes at State and local level. But fragmentation endures. This paper provides evidence of the enduring problem of fragmentation and presents a framework to analyse Australia's experience in natural resource management. The analysis reveals the multi-dimensional character of the problems and identifies a diverse set of actions that need to be taken to improve integration in policy and implementation. The article reports on the environmental project participated by most city councils in Australia. The Local Government Sustainability Health Check promotes sustainable and environmental practices and also includes training and workshops for awareness on sustainable development. Director-General of the Department of Environment and Conservation Lisa Corbyn recognizes the environmental leadership of the communities who participated and supported the project. It is also mentioned that the project aids national movement towards sustainable living.
