Abstract

The article discusses the status of the World Bank as a nonpolitical organization. Particular focus is given to Article 4(10) of its Articles of Agreement. The author examines the original intent and subsequent interpretation of the article's nonpolitical mandate during the 1940s . Details on the relationship between politics and the World Bank's missions of reconstruction and development are presented. Topics discussed include international private investment and the Cold War.
