Research has revealed that the probability of exiting a spell of low income is related to the length of time spent in low income situations. The number of children, age, sex and marital status are also all relevant factors. Single parent families tend to spend longer periods below the low income threshold, and are also more prone to re-enter a period of low income. The Statistic Canada Longitudinal Administrative Databank was used for the research.

Labor Department senior economist Stephen J. Rose's longitudinal study on social mobility reveals that one-third of prime-age adults had lower income at the end of the 1980s than at the start. About 36% of male earners had lower income in the 1980s compared to only 24% in the 1970s. In terms of job stability, only 52% were stable in the 1980s compared to 67% in the 1970s while weak job stability increased from 12% in the 1970s to 24% in the 1980s.

Policies to alleviate poverty require its accurate measurement. Traditional methods compare individuals' income levels with standard minimum level often referred to as the poverty line. However, expenditures are another indicator of standard of living. The relative performances of income and expenditure as indicators of poverty are compared using data from the 1985 Family Expenditure Survey. Based on a comparison of alternative rankings, the results indicate that expenditure may outperform income as a poverty measure.
