Research presented concerns whether or not children who grow up without one biological parent tend to be at a socioeconomic disadvantage compared to other children. Research on parental absence due to death suggests that a single-parent family has little impact on the economic well-being of the adult child.

This article examines the National Longitudinal Surveys of Labor Market Experience, commonly called the NLS. The article first provides a brief overview of the information available in these long-running surveys. Second, it discusses the contributions of NLS-based research to various topics within the field of economics. Finally, it summarizes topics within the NLS questionnaires that have expanded recently to accommodate the changing circumstances of the cohorts.

A study was conducted to determine the cause of cyclical unemployment using data on employment and stock market prices. The study is limited to sectoral shifts and aggregate demand shocks, the two primary theories which are widely used by economists in explaining the causes of unemployment. The negative relationship between sectoral dispersion and job vacancies indicated that cyclical unemployment is caused by aggregate demand shocks and not by sectoral shifts.

Job vacancies and their summarization hold strategic importance in the estimation of unemployment and its effects, especially in the US and Canada. An analysis of the job markets in the US and Canada shows similarity in unemployment patterns and fundamental differences in job vacancies, revealing the quantity of labor required by firms and the discord between the nature of labor requirement and worker training. Labor availability, crucial for the estimation of a country's economic and fiscal stability, determines the nature of the labor market.

Advertisers spend $3 billion a year on help-wanted advertising but have little empirical knowledge about this market. Using data from nine major metropolitan daily newspapers, this study investigates how changes in advertising costs, readership and market share have affected the linage and number of ads published. While revenue to newspapers has soared, image and the number of help-wanted ads published have stagnated because dramatic price increases have counteracted the equally dramatic rise in readership and market share. Unemployment in the 16-24 age bracket, as reported by Bureau of Labor Statistics, have been consistently high. This, however, does not accurately describe the situation since different interpretations of the terms employed, unemployed and not-in-the-labor force lead to wrong classification. A re-classification proves this as the unemployment rates decline in every year between 1980-92.
