Pedicularis kansuensis is a poisonous grass and a semi-parasitic plant that has spread rapidly in alpine grasslands in recent years and caused great harm to animal husbandry and the ecological environment. However, little is known about the habitat of P. kansuensis and the key environmental factors that influence its expansion. We assessed the potential impact of climate change on the distribution of P. kansuensis in China under representative concentration pathway (RCP) 2.6 and RCP 8.5 using maximum entropy (MaxEnt) and MigClim for the years 2050 and 2070 and examined key environmental factors affecting P. kansuensis distribution. In total, 118 occurrence points and fourteen selected variables were used for the modeling. The models developed for P. kansuensis showed excellent performance (AUC > 0.9 and TSS > 0.90). The results were as follows. 1) The occupied habitats for P. kansuensis in the four climate scenarios were generally offset in the northward direction. 2) The most important environmental variables influencing the spread of P. kansuensis were altitude, annual precipitation, annual temperature range, precipitation in the warmest quarter and ultraviolet-B radiation seasonality (UVB-2). 3) Under RCP 2.6, the occupied habitat would be increased 0.04% by 2050 and would be increased to 0.51% by 2070. Under RCP 8.5, the average occupied habitat was predicted to increase 0.07% by 2050 and increase to 0.53% by 2070. The increase was relatively higher in the occupied habitats located in the southwestern regions (Sichuan, Xizang and Yunnan) than those in the northwestern regions (Gansu and Xinjiang)., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier B.V. In their recent study, Borowicz and Armstrong (Oecologia 169:783-792, 2012) investigated effects of nutrient availability and competition for light on a perennial root hemiparasite Pedicularis canadensis. Their study showed a reduction of community productivity as a result of hemiparasite infection independently of a clear positive effect of increased nutrients. In contrast, there was a minimal effect of increased competition for light on growth of the parasite. Here, we summarize the available data on the influence of nutrient availability (closely related to productivity) on temperate grassland root hemiparasites thus expanding the discussion presented by Borowicz and Armstrong (Oecologia 169:783-792, 2012). Most studies show that root hemiparasites are highly sensitive to elevated competition for light in productive environments, which is manifested as an increase in mortality coupled to a decrease in population density. Such responses reflect increased mortality of hemiparasite seedlings that are physiologically inefficient in terms of photosynthesis and nutrient acquisition owing to a limited root network and consequently, are highly sensitive to competition for light. However, the susceptibility of hemiparasites to competition for light tends to decrease for individuals that survive the critical seedling stage. Moreover, survivors benefit from elevated nutrient availability, resulting in increased growth and fecundity. Elevated productivity can thus have opposing effects on the survival and growth of hemiparasites depending on life stage. We conclude that the findings by Borowicz and Armstrong (Oecologia 169:783-792, 2012) are not in conflict with this general view that root hemiparasite population ecology is strongly influenced by competition for light in highly productive environments.

Hemiparasitic plants tend to thrive in and significantly affect plant communities in low-nutrient, high-light environments. Hemiparasites are assumed to be weak competitors for light but strong parasites, leading to the prediction that effects on hosts and communities should be a function of resource supply. We investigated the effects of light and mineral nutrients on hemiparasite-host relations in two experiments. Removal of the hemiparasite, addition of fertilizer, and full sun significantly increased total aboveground dry mass in small plots on a restored tallgrass prairie. After 3 years, removal of Pedicularis canadensis almost doubled the mass of grasses and had smaller effects on forb species, but the impact of the parasite was independent of resource level. Fertilizer increased grass growth only in full sun, increased non-legume forb growth only when shade was applied, and tended to depress legume growth when shaded. Light manipulation did not affect the hemiparasite across 4 years of manipulation but fertilizer increased P. canadensis shoot mass. A complementary greenhouse experiment with Andropogon gerardii as host produced qualitatively similar effects and showed that shade reduced root growth of both the host and the parasite. These results do not support common assumptions regarding hemiparasite-host relations under field conditions but indicate that a small hemiparasite can significantly affect prairie productivity regardless of resource supply.
