Surface ozone monitoring sites in the tropics are limited, despite the risk that surface ozone poses to human health, tropical forest and crop productivity. Atmospheric chemistry models allow us to assess ozone exposure in unmonitored locations and evaluate the potential influence of changing policies and climate on air quality, human health and ecosystem integrity. Here, we utilise in situ ozone measurements from ground-based stations in the pan-tropics to evaluate ozone from the UK Earth system model, UKESM1, with a focus on remote sites. The study includes ozone data from areas with limited previous data, notably tropical South America, central Africa and tropical northern Australia. Evaluating UKESM1 against observations beginning in 1987 onwards, we show that UKESM1 is able to capture changes in surface ozone concentration at different temporal resolutions, albeit with a systematic high bias of 18.1 nmolmol-1 on average. We use the diurnal ozone range (DOR) as a metric for evaluation and find that UKESM1 captures the observed DOR (mean bias of 2.7 nmolmol-1 and RMSE of 7.1 nmolmol-1) and the trend in DOR with location and season. Results from this study reveal that hourly ozone concentrations from UKESM1 require bias correction before use for impact assessments based on human and ecosystem health. Indeed, hourly surface ozone data have been crucial to this study, and we encourage other modelling groups to include hourly surface ozone output as a default. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Rural ecosystem health (REH) serves as an effective metric for assessing the damage degree and stability state within rural systems and their components. It reflects the interaction and the balance among rural subsystems, emphasizing the harmonious development of resources, agriculture, environment, economy, and society that are fundamental to sustainable rural development. Most regional-scale ecosystem health assessments primarily focus on either the natural state of the ecosystem or external disturbances affecting it, often neglecting human ecological systems characterized by economic and social dimensions. Taking Chongqing as an example, we established an improved REH assessment framework by integrating ecological integrity from the perspective of a social-economy-natural compound ecosystem. Furthermore, we innovatively incorporated the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into the formulation of the REH indicator system to quantitatively elucidate the spatiotemporal characteristics. The results indicated that: (1) The REH in Chongqing exhibited an evolutionary pattern characterized by a subsequent rise, maintaining values between 0.363–0.872 from 2000 to 2018. This trend reflected a distinct two-stage development characteristic, with the rural socio-economic subsystem contributing the most at 33.36%, followed closely by the rural environmental subsystem at 27.84%; (2) In 2018, the REH across the 36 districts and counties in Chongqing displayed spatial differentiation patterns described as "collapse in the west, high levels in the northeast, and localized surges". The areas ranked from smallest to largest REH were metropolitan, western, southeastern, and northeastern areas; (3) Four levels (e.g., disease, single health, compound health, and comprehensive health) and twelve sub-levels of REH were defined using a dominant factors method. Finally, we analyzed the driving factors from four aspects of urbanization development: policy regulation, urban-rural factors flow, and regional differences. When focusing on biodiversity maintenance, ecological security pattern (ESP) planning gradually becomes a multi-objective planning strategy for sustainable development; wildlife conservation and ecosystem health maintenance should be balanced with local economic development and people's livelihood enhancement goals. This study focuses on ESP mapping in the Qinling-Daba Mountain area, which is an ecologically significant and socioeconomically underdeveloped area. The tradeoff between conservation and development is made by varying the area of ecological sources and incorporating ecosystem service tradeoffs into ecological source identification through multi-scenario designation. ESPs under six scenarios were generated based on the minimum resistance model, and the important ecological corridors and strategic points in each scenario were identified and compared. The results show the following: (1) The scenario that sets around 30 percent of the study area as ecological sources maintains the integrity of natural ecosystems and leaves space for food and material supply to residents. (2) In this scenario, the ecological sources are connected by 60 corridors that cross 137 townships with high population densities (>100 people/km2) and intersect with major traffic lines at 71 points. Engineering, management, or education strategies must be taken in these townships or intersections to avoid human–wildlife conflicts. (3) The study area needs to construct both short (north–south) corridors linking proximate ecological sources for species' daily movement and long (west–east) corridors connecting large and distant sources for species' seasonal migration and gene flow. The Shibing Karst constitutes a pivotal component of the "South China Karst," and its ecosystem health integrity crucially influences the Outstanding Universal Value (OUV) of the corresponding Natural World Heritage (NWH). Consequently, robust ecosystem health assessment (EHA) is imperative for the judicious conservation and management of this heritage, as well as for the sustainable progression of the region. This research assessed the health of the Shibing Karst ecosystem from 2004 to 2020 by employing changes in landscape patterns through the Vigor-Organization-Resilience-Ecosystem Services (VORS) model. Spatial autocorrelation was employed to discern the spatial coherence and evolutionary patterns of ecosystem health, whereas a geo-detector ascertained the pivotal determinants impacting regional ecosystem vitality. The findings revealed that: (1) The landscape patterns distribution in the study area exhibited considerable constancy, primarily comprising forest land, with a rising trajectory in construction land and water, juxtaposed with a recession in shrubland, grassland, paddy land, and dryland expanses. (2) From 2004 to 2020, the ecosystem of the study area maintained its health and remained stable, with mean values of 0.8303, 0.7689, 0.6976, and 0.7824, respectively, showing an evolutionary trend of an initial downtrend trend followed by an upswing, with 2016 marking a pivotal juncture. (3) Spatial clustering analysis highlighted significant clustering characteristics of ecosystem health, with a nominal decrease in the Global Moran's I index from 0.666 to 0.665, which is indicative of a subtle decrease in clustering over time. High-high clustering areas were predominantly located within the World Heritage Site (WHS), while low-low clustering areas were mainly distributed in the southeastern part of buffer zone. (4) Land use and cover change (LUCC) and Ecosystem Services (ESs) were identified as the primary indexes of EHA, with Ecosystem Resilience (ER), Ecosystem Vigor (EV), and Ecosystem Organization (EO) exerting relatively mild influences. This study investigates the intricate and enduring interplay of historical events, human activities, and natural processes shaping the landscape of North European Plain in western Poland over 230 years. Topographic maps serve as reliable historical data sources to quantify changes in forest, grassland, and wetland areas, scrutinizing their fragmentation and persistence. The primary objectives are to identify the permanent areas of the landscape and propose a universal cartographic visualization method for effectively mapping these changes. Using topographic maps and historical data, this research quantifies land cover changes, especially in forest, grassland, and wetland areas. With the help of retrogressive method we process raster historical data into vector-based information. Over time, wetlands experienced a substantial reduction, particularly in 1960–1982, attributed to both land reclamation and environmental factors. Grassland areas fluctuated, influenced by wetland and drier habitat dynamics. Fragmentation in grassland areas poses biodiversity and ecosystem health concerns, whereas forested areas showed limited fluctuations, with wetland forests nearly disappearing. These findings highlight wetland ecosystems' sensitivity to human impacts and emphasize the need to balance conservation and sustainable development to preserve ecological integrity. This study advances landscape dynamics understanding, providing insights into historical, demographic, economic, and environmental transformations. Wawekale Rainforest Reserve (WRR) is a primary lowland tropical rainforest area in the Western Province of Sri Lanka, established with diversity, but disturbed by human activities such as rubber cultivation, logging, poaching, chemical release, and the collection of firewood. Visual Encounter Surveys (VES) were conducted for 100 hours in the year 2022, which covered wide habitat distribution. The herpetofaunal diversity was measured in the WRR which can indicate broader ecological shifts, environmental changes, or habitat degradation. Water quality was measured in the WRR area to determine the ecosystem health and human impact. The study reports 171 species in 73 families, including two Critically Endangered (1.17%), six Endangered (3.51%), 16 Vulnerable (9.36%), and 14 Near Threatened (8.19%) species according to the IUCN Red List. The study area showed 51 endemic faunal species in Sri Lanka, which represented 29.83% of endemism. Based on the observations conducted on the herpetofauna diversity, the Shannon-Wiener diversity index (H) was calculated and the overall herpetofauna (H'H) showed high diversity within the forest premises. The water quality of the forest fragment had an influence from anthropogenic activities such as removing forest cover, bathing, washing vehicles, and releasing agro-chemical compounds resulting in high water temperature, basic pH level, high electrical conductivity, and high total dissolved solid conditions. The WRR, designated under protection, exhibits the need for immediate remedial actions to mitigate human-induced pollution and deforestation, emphasizing the critical importance of implementing proactive conservation measures to sustain ecological integrity and preserve biodiversity. This paper critically reviews the progress in ecosystem integrity (health) assessment of inland waters and provides future directions for assessment. Current biotic integrity assessments mainly use multimetric indices and predictive models to evaluate overall health status; the criteria largely rely on pristine reference sites, but such an approach is not applicable to unique natural waters and irreversibly modified waters. Biotic diagnostic assessments are still in the exploratory stage and can only diagnose possible stressor types and wide-ranges of their intensities through empirical models linking stressors and species-trait-indices. Current chemical integrity assessments mainly use criteria determined by small-scale ecotoxicity tests, rather than quantitative relationships developed between chemical factors and biotic effects in real ecosystems, thus potentially under or overestimating pollutant toxicity. Current physical integrity assessments focus on overall habitat quality, rather than quantitative habitat requirements, and thus cannot provide quantitative support for ecological restoration and conservation. Current hydrological integrity (environment flow) assessments largely depend on quantitative relationships between hydrological regimes with a few species and single groups, rather than with whole communities, and fail to comprehensively diagnose hydrological causes of biotic resource decline. In the future, integrity assessments need to be based on ecosystem integrity requirements of ecosystem service targets: first, there is a need to build quantitative relationships between biotic integrity and ecosystem services, assess requirements of community structure and function for service goals, and establish biotic integrity assessment methods; second, we must build quantitative relationships between biotic integrity and abiotic integrity in real ecosystems, assess chemical, physical, and hydrological integrity requirements of biotic needs, and establish diagnostic assessment methods. The analysis of micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs) in the environment is a critical objective due to their ubiquitous presence in natural habitats, as well as their occurrence in various food, beverage, and organism matrices. MNPs pose significant concerns due to their direct toxicological effects and their potential to serve as carriers for hazardous organic/inorganic contaminants and pathogens, thereby posing risks to both human health and ecosystem integrity. Understanding the fate of MNPs within wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) holds paramount importance, as these facilities can be significant sources of MNP emissions. Additionally, during wastewater purification processes, MNPs can accumulate contaminants and pathogens, potentially transferring them into receiving water bodies. Hence, establishing a robust analytical framework encompassing sampling, extraction, and instrumental analysis is indispensable for monitoring MNP pollution and assessing associated risks. This comprehensive review critically evaluates the strengths and limitations of commonly employed methods for studying MNPs in wastewater, sludge, and analogous environmental samples. Furthermore, this paper proposes potential solutions to address identified methodological shortcomings. Lastly, a dedicated section investigates the association of plastic particles with chemicals and pathogens, alongside the analytical techniques employed to study such interactions. Background: The application of index of biotic integrity (IBI) to evaluate river health can be an essential method for river ecosystem management. However, these types of methods were developed in small, low-order streams, and are therefore, infrequently applied to large rivers. To that end, phytoplankton communities and environmental variables were monitored in 30 sampling segments of the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, China during the wet (July–August) and dry (November–December) seasons in 2017–2018. We developed a phytoplankton-based index of biotic integrity (P-IBI) and used the index to assess the ecological health of the Yangtze River. Relationships among P-IBI, its component metrics, and environmental factors were analyzed across different seasons. Results: Results obtained from the P-IBI indicated that the phytoplankton-based ecological health of the Yangtze River was rated as "good" during both seasons, with an overall better condition in the dry season. During the wet season, there were scattered river segments with P-IBI ratings of "fair" or below. Water quality and land use appeared to shape the patterns of P-IBI. In the wet season, P-IBI negatively correlated with total phosphorus, nitrate, total suspended solids, turbidity, conductivity, and dissolved oxygen. In the dry season, P-IBI positively correlated with total nitrogen, ammonium, and nitrite, and negatively correlated with water temperature. Conclusions: The ecological health of the Yangtze River as reflected by the P-IBI exhibited spatial and temporal variability, with the effect of water quality being greater than that of local land use. This study indicated the importance of considering seasonal effects in detecting large river ecological health. These findings enhanced our understanding of the ecological health and characterized potential benchmarks for management of the Yangtze River. Production, living, and ecological space are three of the most important components in the rural living environment system. The interactions among the three spaces are outstanding in the rapidly urbanizing areas with a concentrated population and frequent production activities. It is very necessary to clarify the impact of the interactions on rural livability. Taking Lishui District of Nanjing in China as an example, a rural "Production-Living-Ecological Space" classification index system was built using land use and POI (Point of interest) data. Three spaces were identified comprehensively, according to the entropy weight, linear weighting, and spatial analysis function of ArcGIS. Then, an evaluation system of rural livability was established to consider the functions of the "Production-Living-Ecological Space" and the interaction among them. The rural livability of each town was classified in 2010 and 2018. The levels of rural livability were also analyzed in the towns. A systematic analysis was made to clarify the influence of the interaction of the "Production-Living-Ecological Space" on the evaluation of rural livability. The interactivity indicators were removed from the rural livability evaluation system. The livability scores were calculated without considering the interaction of the "Production-Living-Ecological Space". The results showed that: 1) The production space was dominant in the rural "Production-Living-Ecological Space" in 2010 and 2018, which was mostly distributed in the periphery of the living space. The ecological space was the second, which was clustered in many areas of the district. The living space was the smallest near the intersection of traffic roads. The composition and distribution of the "Production-Living-Ecological Space" varied greatly in each town. The distribution of production, living, and ecological space roughly overlapped with that of arable land, rural settlements, and water and forest meadows. The area of rural living space generally increased. The newly increased living space was mainly concentrated in the middle of each town, especially in Yongyang, Shiqiu, and Zhetang. By contrast, the area of production space decreased, where Zhetang, Yongyang, and Shiqiu had the greatest decrease among the eight towns. 2) The overall level of rural livability was not high in 2010 and 2018, where the average score declined slightly in the eight years. The high and low livability areas were located in Hefeng and Baima Town in 2010, respectively, whereas, those were located in Yongyang and Dongping Town in 2018, respectively. Among them, Hefeng Town was ranked the first in the study area in 2010, in terms of livability levels, but Baima Town was ranked the last. Until 2018, Yongyang Town shared the highest livability score, whereas, Dongping Town was the lowest. The livability rank of Yongyang Town increased, while that of Dongping and Shiqiu Town decreased during the eight years. 3) The livability score of Zhetang Town was higher than that of Hefeng Town, whereas, the livability score of Baima Town was higher than that of Jingqiao Town, without considering the interaction among the "Production-Living-Ecological Space". It was exactly the opposite after considering the interaction, indicating more in line with local reality. Therefore, the interaction among the "Production-Living-Ecological Space" posed a certain influence on the livability of the countryside, indicating a new idea for the study of rural livability. Among the towns with "high" livability, Yongyang Town should maintain the integrity of the ecosystem and adhere to the innovation-driven development strategy for the modern industrial system. Hefeng Town should maintain ecological health to strengthen the construction of public facilities. Among the towns with "relatively high" livability, Zhetang Town should pay attention to the rational layout of production, living, and ecological space, in order to strengthen the construction and protection of ecological space. Honglan Town should focus on the industrial transformation and upgrading in the future construction, in order to reduce the negative impact of production space on the living and ecological space. Jingqiao Town with its "relatively low" livability should continue to introduce effective policies, and then reduce the negative impact of production and living space on ecological space for the better protection of water areas. Among the towns with "low" livability, Shiqiu Town should rationalize the production and living space layout, in order to reduce the pollution from production activities via the policy measures. Dongping Town should strengthen the construction of public facilities and roads, with an emphasis on the industrial transformation for better ecological environment protection. Baima Town should focus on the infrastructure to optimize the production and living space layout for the sound transportation system. In North America, legal hunting is considered a key component in wildlife management and conservation; however, hunters' relationships with ecosystem health and integrity are rarely explored. In this study, we recruited an online panel of hunters in the United States (n = 508) in 2018 to assess their opinions about hunting‐related practices that often negatively affect biodiversity and ecosystem health (i.e., exotic breeding, stock breeding, and game farming). We investigated the underlying socio‐psychological factors influencing hunters' opinions about these practices based on the value‐belief‐norm and identity theories. Hunter identity, personal norms, and awareness of the negative consequences on ecosystems are associated with opposition to hunting‐related practices that harm ecosystems. We suggest that outreach and education programs targeting hunters should focus on leveraging their existing identities and promoting awareness of the negative consequences of certain hunting practices on biodiversity and ecosystem health. By highlighting these consequences and emphasizing the role of ecosystem health and biodiversity in the long‐term sustainability of hunting opportunities, such programs can effectively encourage hunters to adopt ecosystem stewardship behaviors. Wetlands are often referred to as the Earth's kidneys. However, wetlands worldwide are still negatively affected due to a lack of comprehensive understanding of wetland landscape ecological health (WLEH). Based on this background, we analyzed and compared the conceptual definitions, research progress, contents (in terms of structural, functional, and process health), and methods (indicator species approach, ecological integrity assessment, conceptual model evaluation including the vigor–organization–resilience (VOR), pressure–state–response (PSR), and ecological feature–function–socioeconomic (EFFS) models, and water–gas CO2 calculation) over the past 20 years (2000–2022). Moreover, the concept definition and research progress of ecosystem health (EH) and landscape ecological health (LEH) and WLEH research outlook were analyzed. In this study, it was shown that WLEH could be considered a LEH subset, while the LEH is a specific EH perspective. These three concepts share a common focus on ecosystem conditions, functions, and services while considering ecological processes and habitat characteristics. However, they differ in the scope and specific types of ecosystems considered. Human populations and ecosystems are extensively exposed to pesticides. Most nations lack the capacity to control pesticide contamination and have limited availability of pesticide use information. Ecuador is a country with intense pesticide use with high exposure risks to humans and the environment, although relative or combined risks are not well understood. Here, we analyzed the distribution of application rates in Ecuador and identified regions of concern because of high potential exposure. We used a geospatial analysis to identify grid cells (∼8 km × 8 km) where the highest pesticide application rates and density of human populations overlap. Furthermore, we identified other regions of concern based on the number of amphibian species as an indicator of ecosystem integrity and the location of natural protected areas. We found that 28% of Ecuador's population dwelled in areas with high pesticide application rate. We identified an area of ∼512 km2 in the Amazon region where high application rates, large human settlements, and a high number of amphibian species overlapped. Additionally, we distinguished clusters of pesticide application rates and human populations that intersected with natural protected areas. Ecuador exemplifies how pesticides are disproportionately applied in areas with the potential to affect human health and ecosystems' integrity. Global estimates of population dwelling, pesticide application rates, and environmental factors are key in prioritizing locations to conduct further exposure assessments. The modular and scalable nature of the geospatial tools we developed can be expanded and adapted to other regions of the world where data on pesticide use are limited. Plain Language Summary: Pesticide exposures are a concerning issue that threatens ecosystem integrity and human health. However, most countries cannot assess, monitor, and control pesticide contamination. We studied this threat in Ecuador, a country with one of the highest application rates of pesticides worldwide, an export‐bound agricultural industry, a large population at risk, remarkable biodiversity, and a limited understanding of the nationwide extent of pesticide contamination. We assessed the geographic distribution of pesticide application rates and identified regions where the potential risk of exposure to human populations and ecosystems requires detailed exposure assessments. Using publicly available global data sets that locate human populations, biodiversity, natural parks, and pesticide use rates, we mapped areas where high levels of pesticide use and high density of human population overlap. We also assessed areas where natural parks and amphibian species may be threatened. Around 28% of Ecuador's population lived in areas with a high pesticide application rate. We found widespread intensive use of pesticides in Ecuador in regions that overlap with human populations and ecosystems at risk of exposure. The methods developed relied on open‐source software and publicly available data. Thus, our approach can be applied to other regions where data on pesticide use are limited. Coastal ecosystems are complex and often support a broad spectrum of functions with competing objectives. In addition to their ecological value, they offer socio-economic benefits (i.e., ecosystem services) to coastal communities. One potential way to help address this complexity is to use decision support systems to help natural resources managers understand system dynamics and evaluate strategies to maintain the health and integrity of these ecosystems. This paper presents a roadmap and detailed application of co-production strategies where managers and researchers are fully engaged in a collaborative manner in the design of a decision support tool for coastal ecosystems. It also emphasizes the importance of capturing end-users' (i.e., natural resource managers) priorities to refine the conceptual design of the decision support tool, while maintaining a sound scientific and modeling framework. The case study presented here centers on the Northern Gulf of Mexico, but the concept can be exported globally to other systems. This effort highlights foundational co-production strategies, including transdisciplinary team assembly, a knowledge sharing workshop, Toolbox Dialogue Initiative workshops to facilitate working across disciplines, core team and focus group meetings, and design charrettes. Changes in stream biodiversity are now mainly driven by land-use development. However, a literature review on the impact of land use on stream macroinvertebrates is lacking, especially a scientometric review. Here, we bibliometrically analyzed the literature on land use and stream macroinvertebrates that were published in 2010–2021 and listed in the Web of Science database. We found that the impact of land use on stream macroinvertebrates had been increasingly studied and that these studies were distributed across the globe and had multi-national collaborations. Through co-citation analysis and high-frequency keyword analysis, we found that land use and some environmental factors, especially water quality and habitat, affected macroinvertebrate community biodiversity, biotic integrity, and patterns. Macroinvertebrate traits, analytical methods or models, evaluation index development, and riparian vegetation were the research hotspots. Using historical direct citation network analysis, we also found that the analytical methods in this field and the macroinvertebrate evaluation index had clear development trends from 2010 to 2021. New Zealand is introducing new legislation aimed at improving both developmental and environmental outcomes. Objectives include protecting and where required restoring ecological integrity, using environmental limits and targets, as well as improving long-term planning processes. This will contribute to protecting and enhancing biodiversity values, and offers greater opportunities to identify and potentially achieve long-term environmental goals. However, reliance on the mitigation hierarchy and a lack of clarity over what ecological integrity means in practice is likely to result in continuing net decline in natural environment values. A large number of freshwater lakes around the world show recurring harmful algal blooms, particularly cyanobacterial blooms, that affect public health and ecosystem integrity. Prediction, early detection, and monitoring of algal blooms are inevitable for the mitigation and management of their negative impacts on the environment and human beings. Remote sensing provides an effective tool for detecting and spatiotemporal monitoring of these events. Various remote sensing platforms, such as ground-based, spaceborne, airborne, and UAV-based, have been used for mounting sensors for data acquisition and real-time monitoring of algal blooms in a cost-effective manner. This paper presents an updated review of various remote sensing platforms, data types, and algorithms for detecting and monitoring algal blooms in freshwater lakes. Recent studies on remote sensing using sophisticated sensors mounted on UAV platforms have revolutionized the detection and monitoring of water quality. Image processing algorithms based on Artificial Intelligence (AI) have been improved recently and predicting algal blooms based on such methods will have a key role in mitigating the negative impacts of eutrophication in the future. This study demonstrates the use of a multi‐metric Fish Index of Biotic Integrity (FIBI) for assessment of ecological health of a medium‐sized river, under a gradient of human disturbances in the Kenyan side of the Lake Victoria Basin (LVB). Development of the index is based on water quality, river habitat quality and fish community attributes. The river was sampled from 2019 to 2020 during wet and dry seasons of the year at nine selected sites along its length based on the level of human disturbance. A total of nine metrics representing the structural and functional organization of fish communities were qualified using the separation power of Mann–Whitney U test (p <.05). Metric values at unimpaired, intermediate, impaired and no‐fish sites were used to establish the scoring criteria using inter‐quartile ranges. A 1, 3, 5 scoring system representing high, fair and slight deviation from the best site, respectively, was used in the final FIBI development. River mouth station had the highest FIBI score of 43, with extensive natural riparian buffer vegetation (>20 m) and 18 fish species implying least human disturbance. The midstream section had intermediate FIBI scores of 34–36, with wide natural riparian buffer vegetation (10–20 m) and 6–9 fish species that represented moderate human disturbance. The upstream section had the least FIBI score of 0, with no fish and narrow riparian buffer vegetation (<5 m) that indicated notable degradation. This study presents the preliminary results of using fish and habitat metrics for development of an Index of Biotic Integrity (IBI) for a medium‐sized river in a lake basin, as a decision‐making support tool for effective management and conservation of water resources. Sandy beaches, essential components of coastal landscapes, are increasingly threatened by urbanization, resource extraction, and climate change, jeopardizing their ecological integrity and scenic value. This study assesses the health and scenic quality of 100 sandy beaches along the Uruguayan coast, influenced by the Ro de la Plata estuary, using the Coastal Scenery Evaluation System (CSES) and a dune integrity assessment as indicators of ecosystem health. The analysis identified urbanization as the primary driver of beach degradation, with the most urbanized beaches, particularly those in the inner and outer estuary macrozones, exhibiting the lowest scenic and ecological values. In contrast, beaches with greater dune integrity and lower human impact, especially those in the oceanic macrozone, demonstrated better scenic quality and ecological health. This study emphasizes the role of natural features, such as dunes and natural vegetation, in sustaining beach health, while stressing the urgent need for sustainable management practices to safeguard the ecological and cultural value of these fragile ecosystems. The findings offer critical insights for coastal governance, management, and conservation, advocating for the protection of less developed beaches and the restoration of degraded beaches through scientifically robust management plans. The trophic interactions between phytoplankton and zooplankton communities are essential for maintaining river ecosystem integrity and health. However, the driving mechanisms of land use and landscape patterns (LULP) affecting their trophic interactions are not fully understood. Therefore, the research objective of this study was to reveal the driving mechanisms of LULP on the interaction of phytoplankton with zooplankton through remote sensing interpretation of LULP in different buffer scales (500 m, 1000 m, 1500 m, and catchment), combined with water environment factors and plankton community structures analyzed. Results showed that LULP had the most significant effect on the phytoplankton and the zooplankton community structure at 500 and 1500 m buffer scales, respectively. Construction land (CON) and edge density (ED) most influenced phytoplankton and zooplankton community structure and their influence mechanisms were identified, i.e., CON increased the species (S) of phytoplankton by increasing the concentration of NO 3 -N in river water at the 500 m buffer scale. ED reduced the biological density (BD) of zooplankton by decreasing the concentration of heavy metal (HM) in river water at the 1500 m buffer scale. The water area (WAT) and ED showed the most significant influence on plankton interaction. Three pathways were found to explain their influence mechanisms, i.e., ED decreased the BD or Shannon-Weiner index (H') of zooplankton by increasing the dissolved oxygen (DO) to enhance BD of phytoplankton in river water at the 1500 m buffer scale; the WAT increased the BD of phytoplankton by increasing water temperature to reduce the H′ of zooplankton at the 500 m buffer. Accurately evaluating the degree of ecosystem health and comprehending its drivers are of crucial importance for ecosystem management and restoration in fragile ecoregions. Adopting an ecosystem stress perspective, this investigation scientifically diagnosed ecosystem health in Guizhou Province, a typical karst fragile ecological area, by developing a "Vigor-Organization-Resilience-Stress" (VORS) regional ecosystem health assessment framework. The principal driving factors and their spatio-temporal heterogeneity influencing ecosystem health in karst regions were investigated using geographic detectors and geographically and temporally weighted regression. Our findings indicated that: (1) The ecosystem health in Guizhou province presents a spatial distribution pattern of lower in the western region and higher in the eastern region, and the average ecosystem health index (EHI) in 2000, 2010 and 2020 is 0.194, 0.246 and 0.254 respectively, indicating that the overall ecosystem health level in Guizhou province has improved with the passage of time. (2) The spatiotemporal variation of ecosystem stress in Guizhou Province is substantial; the pressure associated with land use is projected to increase, whereas the intensity of stress attributed to rocky desertification and soil erosion is anticipated to diminish over time. (3) The primary determinants influencing the health of ecosystems in karst environments are the social and economic elements. These factors progressively amplify their effect on ecosystem health as time passes. The new assessment framework we have established includes ecosystem integrity and ecological threats faced by the ecosystem, which provides a new perspective for understanding the complex internal characteristics of karst areas and the coupling relationship between human and natural ecosystems. Anthropogenic activities, including urbanisation and industrialisation threaten stream ecological integrity, ecosystem community structure and ecosystem functioning of rivers and streams worldwide. However, developing sustainable monitoring strategies for ecological health remains a critical challenge in Africa. We examined the effects of urban disturbance on macroinvertebrate Functional Feeding Groups in selected streams in the Niger Delta Region of Nigeria. We sampled 11 sites between 2008 and 2012 and grouped into three site groups (Site groups 1 > 2 > 3). The groups represent an increasing gradient of urban pollution. Our result showed that urban-induced disturbances affected physicochemical variables in the study area (PERMANOVA; p < 0.05), with nutrients NO2-N, PO4-P, and electrical conductivity being significantly higher in impacted Site group 3 (ANOVA, p < 0.05). Predators and gatherers were the most dominant Functional Feeding Group recorded in the study area, while shredders were the least abundant macroinvertebrate Functional Feeding Groups. The multivariate RLQ analysis revealed that shredders, predators, and scrapers were tolerant of urban pollution, whereas gatherers were sensitive to increasing urban pollution. Overall, macroinvertebrates Functional Feeding Groups responded differentially to urban pollution in the Niger Delta Region. Identifying pollution indicator Functional Feeding Groups is seen as an important step towards developing a reliable, low-cost tool for riverine monitoring of urban pollution effects in Africa. The ecological integrity of lotic ecosystems is influenced by land cover type and human activity throughout the watershed. This study evaluated Nakdong River conditions in 2016 using two multi-metric models, the index of biotic integrity (IBI) and the water pollution index (WPI), and compared model outputs for four land cover types: predominantly urban, forest, barren land, and agricultural. The primary objective of this study was to determine whether the land cover type and human disturbance metrics effectively regulate water quality, fish communities, and ecological integrity in the Nakdong River basin. Predominantly forest sites had low nutrient, organic matter, suspended solids, ion, and algal chlorophyll concentrations. In contrast, these concentrations were higher in predominantly agricultural, urban, and barren land areas. Concentrations of nutrients, organic matter, ions, suspended particle loadings, and algal growth regulated by the intensity of the Asian summer monsoon. Model outputs indicated that total phosphorus (TP) was the most important factor in algal growth in agricultural (R2 = 0.25) and barren land (R2 = 0.35) sites, and evidence of P limitation was found, with TN:TP ratios >17 in ambient water. Fish community analysis indicated that tolerant species dominated the fish community in the agricultural (52%), barren land (85%), and urban sites (53%), and sensitive species were dominant in the forest sites (56%). Fish composition analysis indicated that two exotic species (Lepomis macrochirus (3.99%) and Micropterus salmoides (3.92%)) were identified as the fifth and seventh most abundant fish species in the watershed and labeled as "ecologically disturbing species" in Korea. Nutrient enrichment, organic pollution, and algal blooms enhanced the mean relative abundance of omnivorous and tolerant fish species. Mean WPI and IBI scores indicated fair or poor conditions in the agricultural (WPI: 22, IBI: 16), barren land (WPI: 21, IBI: 14), and urban (WPI: 21, IBI: 17) sites and good or fair conditions in forest (WPI: 28, IBI: 21) sites. The chemical (r = −0.34) and biological (r = −0.21) health of the river basin were negatively related to human disturbance metrics. The findings suggested that regional land cover, summer monsoon intensity, and human disturbance are important drivers of water quality, fish community, and ecological health. The resulting information suggested that agricultural diffuse pollution control, cutting-edge wastewater treatment technologies, and reducing the degrees of human disturbance could improve the Nakdong River's ecological integrity. Ecosystem health (EH) is important for ensuring sustainable development, and the main goal of environmental protection and governance, especially for ecological fragile areas. Scientific assessment of EH can improve decision-making ability and inform sustainable development. In this paper, the effects of natural and social environment were integrated to reflect the characteristics of EH based on a comprehensive assessment system including ecosystem vigor (EV), ecosystem organization (EO), ecosystem resilience (ER), and the ratio of supply to demand of ecosystem services (ESDR) from the perspectives of ecological integrity and human demand for ecosystem services (ES). The Entire-Array-Polygon (EAP) method was applied to calculate an ecosystem health index (EHI) and analyze spatio-temporal change from 2000 to 2020 in Hexi Corridor (HC), Northwest China. The results showed that: (1) The spatial distribution of EV, EO, ER, and ESDR was generally consistent, with a low spatial distribution in the northwest and high in the southeast, the values showed an overall increasing trend from 2000 to 2020. (2) The spatial distribution of EHI was high in the northwest and central regions, and low in the southwest, reflected a moderate health level. The proportion of area with well and relatively well health was increasing, which indicated that EH showed an improving trend. (3) The significantly decrease areas of EHI were mainly located in urban areas, and the increases areas were mainly located outside of urban areas. The distribution of the EH condition has obvious orientation characteristics. Wetlands are crucial ecosystems that are increasingly threatened by anthropogenic activities. L'Albufera Natural Park, the second-largest coastal wetland in Spain, faces significant pressures from surrounding agricultural lands, industrial activities, human settlements, and associated infrastructures, including treated wastewater inputs. This study aimed at (i) establishing pathways of emerging pollutants entering the natural wetland using both target and non-target screening (NTS) for management purposes, (ii) distinguishing specific contamination hotspots through Geographic Information System (GIS) and (iii) performing basic ecological risk assessment to evaluate ecosystem health. Two sampling campaigns were conducted in the spring and summer of 2019, coinciding with the start and end of the rice cultivation season, the region's primary agricultural activity. Each campaign involved the collection of 51 samples. High-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) was employed, using a simultaneous NTS approach with optimized gradients for pesticides and moderately polar compounds, along with complementary NTS methods for polar compounds, to identify additional contaminants of emerging concern (CECs). Quantitative analysis revealed that fungicides comprised a substantial portion of detected CECs, constituting approximately 50% of the total quantified pesticides. Tebuconazole emerged as the predominant fungicide, with the highest mean concentration (>16.9 μg L−1), followed by azoxystrobin and tricyclazole. NTS tentatively identified 16 pesticides, 43 pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs), 24 industrial compounds, and 12 other CECs with high confidence levels. Spatial distribution analysis demonstrated significant contamination predominantly in the southwestern region of the park, gradually diminishing towards the north-eastern outlet. The composition of contaminants varied between water and sediment samples, with pharmaceuticals predominating in water and industrial compounds in sediments. Risk assessment, evaluated through risk quotient calculations based on parent compound concentrations, revealed a decreasing trend towards the outlet, suggesting wetland degradation capacity. However, significant risk levels persist throughout much of the Natural Park, highlighting the urgent need for mitigation measures to safeguard the integrity of this vital ecosystem. The East Kolkata Wetlands (EKW) in Kolkata, India, span 12,500 ha and are a vital ecological zone providing several benefits, including water purification, flood control, and biodiversity support. This study investigated land use and land cover (LULC) alterations in the EKW from 1991 to 2023, using a random forest (RF) machine learning model. Significant LULC changes were observed over the 32 years, with wetland areas decreasing from 91.2 km2 in 1991 to 33.4 km2 in 2023, reflecting substantial habitat loss and reduced ecosystem services. Conversely, agricultural land expanded from 27.8 km2 to 58.7 km2, driven by economic and food production needs, and built-up areas increased dramatically from 0.2 km2 to 10.5 km2, indicating rapid urbanization. This study evaluated the health, resilience, and ecosystem functionality of EKW by analysing human-induced land use changes and using ecological indicators and landscape metrics. Landscape and class level metrics such as PLAND, largest patch index (LPI), total edge (TE), edge density (ED), number of patches (NP), and patch density (PD) were used to analyse the spatiotemporal dynamics of the wetlands. This study revealed a significant increase in fragmentation, with the number of patches increasing from 2689 in 1991 to 4532 in 2023, despite a consistent decrease in core wetland areas. Ecosystem health indicators, such as the ecosystem structure index (ESI) and landscape deviation degree (LDD), were used to assess landscape metrics and fragmentation changes. The ESI and other metrics revealed significant temporal fluctuations, providing insights into landscape structure, connectivity, and heterogeneity. The ESI improved from 0.87 in 1991 to 1.03 in 2023, indicating enhanced connectivity and diversity. Conversely, the LDD increased from 20.6% to 56.85%, indicating a shift towards impervious surfaces. The vegetation productivity and ecosystem health index (EHI) decreased, indicating biodiversity loss and reduced carbon sequestration. The EHI also dropped from 0.67 to 0.55, signifying ongoing environmental stress. This study emphasizes the need for conservation efforts to maintain the ecological integrity of the EKW amidst urbanization and land use changes and recommends a balanced approach for sustainable urban development and enhanced wetland resilience. India has a vast network of 14 major rivers and their tributaries, covering 83% of the drainage basin and accounting for 85% of the surface flow. Anthropogenic activities like damming, channel modification, water abstraction, sewage and effluent disposal, sand mining, unthoughtful exploitation of biotic resources, etc. are the major threats faced by the rivers in the country. Monitoring protocol of Indian rivers lacks an integrated approach based on judicious use of both abiotic and biotic components as well as a total lack of consideration for ecological health. Index of Biotic Integrity is a flexible multimetric index that can be modified and adapted to the various zoogeographic regions of the world. A fish-based multi-metric IBI was developed by modifying and incorporating metrics that are sensitive to the various ecological stressors faced by Indian rivers, fishes being excellent indicators of river health. The adapted IBI was validated and used to assess ecological health of two rivers—Mahanadi, and its distributary Kathajodi-Devi—flowing through central-eastern India. The study indicated that in River Mahanadi, around 25% of the freshwater river stretch was slightly impaired and the remaining 75% stretch was moderately impaired. In Kathajodi-Devi, most of the river stretches were in a moderately impaired condition, except at Italnga stretch where the river was severely impaired. The Index of Biotic Integrity scores estimated could reflect the ecological health of the rivers. The study shows that use of Index of Biotic Integrity is a useful and reliable approach to assess the health conditions of Indian aquatic resources warranting initiatives to be taken to implement and incorporate it into the country's water resource management. A multimetric index was developed using benthic macroinvertebrates to assess the ecological health of selected rivers and streams in the north-eastern part of Lake Tana subbasin, Ethiopia. One-time extensive sampling was carried out during the post-rainy season (November–December) of 2016. Macroinvertebrates were collected using a Surber sampler and a D-frame net at twenty sites. Based on the measured physico-chemical variables, sampling sites were clustered into references (n = 8) and test sites (n = 4). Approximately thirty potential candidate metrics were tested, and five metrics were selected as core metrics: number of Ephemeroptera Plecoptera Trichoptera taxa, percentage of Ephemeroptera individuals, percentage of EPT individuals, percentage that were shredders, and the percentage that were filter-feeders. These metrics were scored on a continuous scale from 0 to 10. To develop Lake Tana subbasin multimetric index (LTSBMI), scores were added and scaled to produce a score from 0 to 100. The final index was divided into five water quality classes: 'very good', 'good', 'fair', 'poor' and 'very poor'. The LTSBMI was effective in discriminating sites with different levels of impacts, but should be checked to other localities. Background: In Germany and the EU, most headwaters are still far from reaching a good chemical and ecological status as it is required by the European Water Framework Directive (WFD), until 2027 the latest. Particularly, in densely populated areas, impacts from municipal and industrial wastewater discharges or diffuse agricultural emissions are still a matter of concern. This also applies to the Nidda River which is considered to be in a moderate to rather poor condition. In our study, we investigated short-term and long-term consequences of anthropogenic pollution on fish health via one monitoring with caged fish (CF) and two field sampling campaigns (FF). In the CF monitoring, rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) were caged for seven weeks at four selected sites along the Nidda, whereas in the FF monitoring approach, feral fish, including brown trout (Salmo trutta f. fario), European chub (Leuciscus cephalus) and stone loach (Barbatula barbatula) were caught in June and September 2016. Results: Histopathological analyses of liver and gills were conducted, accompanied by measurements of hepatic 7-ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase (EROD) activity to assess the cytochrome P450 (CYP1A1) function, and genotoxicity via the micronucleus assay. Caged as well as field-captured fish exhibited impaired health conditions showing lesions particularly in the liver, and a presumably overwhelmed CYP1A1 system, whereas genotoxicity was not induced. The variation between sampling sites and seasons was rather low, but two trends were recognisable: (a) liver condition was poorest around spawning season and (b) tissue integrity and EROD activity were most affected downstream of industrial dischargers. Furthermore, effects were species dependent: the generally highly sensitive S. trutta f. fario proved to be impacted most, whereas L. cephalus with its pelagic lifestyle was affected less than the benthic B. barbatula, indicating a relevant contamination of sediments. Conclusion: Our results confirm the impaired ecological state of the Nidda and emphasise that a sustainable improvement of aquatic ecosystem health needs to include both water quality and sediment contamination to approach the ambitious WFD goal. The adoption of both Nature-based Solutions (NbS) and a system perspective is a hot issue and an area in which there is much room for improvement in ecological protection and restoration. The study takes Altay region as an example, an area located in Xinjiang, China, which is an important ecological corridor of the national key functional area and the core area of the Belt and Road but has a fragile ecological environment and needs much enhancement in ecological protection and restoration. Guided by the concept of "mountains-rivers-forests-farmlands-lakes-grasslands (MRFFLG) system is a life community", the coupling relationship of the various MRFFLG elements, the main ecological environmental problems and the integrated countermeasures for protection and restoration in Altay region have been analyzed in this study. The study shows that Altay region has a typical meta-ecosystem of mountain, oasis, and desert, and the connections by rivers and lakes make the ecosystem links within the region much closer. The interweaving of resource-environmental-ecological issues of the aquatic ecosystem, degradation of the quality of terrestrial ecosystems such as forests, grasslands and farmlands, the increased ecosystem fragmentation and ecological risks are the major ecological environmental issues in this region. This study takes the improvement of the ecosystem health and function in Altay region as the core goal of regional ecological protection and restoration. First, we establish a zoning governance pattern from the perspective of ecosystem integrity; second, we design governance strategies for different zones with the goal of synergistic improvements in the ecosystem functions; and finally, we clarify the key engineering tasks in different zones from the perspective of ecosystem services. Ecological conservation and restoration of the MRFFLG system is a prime example of the application and development of NbS in China. This paper constructs an analytical framework for identifying regional life communities, diagnosing ecological protection and restoration of zoning problems, and proposing classified solutions for ecological protection tasks for the protection of the MRFFLG system. This research will enrich the theory and technology for the protection and restoration of MRFFLG systems, and provide guidance for the practice of ecological protection and restoration in Altay region. Laguna de Bay, the largest and nationally significant freshwater lake ecosystem in the Philippines, has been increasingly subjected to anthropogenic pressures over the years. Domestic, agricultural, and industrial activities in the surrounding areas have contributed directly and indirectly to the deterioration of the lake's overall ecological health and integrity. This study assessed the chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), arsenic (As), lead (Pb), and cadmium (Cd) contamination in Asiatic clam, Corbicula fluminea, using quadrupole inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry. Estimated daily consumption of Asiatic clam was determined through a social survey. The data from analytical analysis and social surveys were utilized to calculate the target hazard quotient (THQ) to determine the potential health risks of consuming heavy metal–enriched clams to fishing households. Results from the Knowledge, Attitude, and Practices (KAP) survey indicated that the majority of the respondents have an acceptable level of knowledge on the hazards posed by the intake of contaminated clams but disapproved the banning of its collection and consumption. Sampled households with high consumption rates in all municipalities except Victoria were also found to be exposed to imminent health risk due to the high toxicity level of As based on their THQ values. Overall, one-third of the fishing households exposed to elevated health risk based on their total target hazard quotient (TTHQ) values already warrant a concern. The potential human health risks validate the worsening condition of Laguna de Bay. Integrative and holistic management of the lake through collaborative efforts of various stakeholders and institutions is necessary, to restore the health of the ecosystem and safeguard the health of the public. Ecosystem health and integrity are characterized by parasitic fauna and the presence of pollutants. In this study, we investigate the relationship between heavy metal contamination and parasitic diseases infecting tilapia species (Oreochromis niloticus, Sarotherodon galilaeus and Tilapia zillii) in Khor El Ramla, Lake Nasser and heavy metal (Cu, Fe and Zn) concentrations in fish musculature and water. We aimed to clarify the relationship between heavy metals and parasites and evaluate the suitability of these fish for human consumption. Among 150 examined fish, 49.3% were positive for at least one parasite. Most parasites infecting the fish species were larvae (Clinostomum spp., Euclinostomum spp. and Contracaecum spp.); however, Diplostomatid encysted metacercariae were detected in T. zillii. Acanthosentis tialipiae was the only adult parasite detected in all three fish. Significantly higher concentrations of Cu, Fe and Zn were detected in the musculature of parasite‐infected fish than non‐infected fish with the exception of T. zillii‐infected diplostomatid, which exhibited lower Cu and Fe concentrations. Cu, Fe and Zn concentrations in fish musculature (infected and non‐infected) and water, and their bioaccumulation factors (BAFs) at Khor El Ramla were within permissible limits. Significant correlations were detected between Cu, Zn and Fe in the musculature of tilapia and parasitic infections. S. galilaeus infected with parasites exhibited a higher Cu BAF, indicating a greater ability to bioaccumulate Cu. Regulatory standards for environmental flows to estuaries are not common, but they are required in Texas. This has led to adoption of complex freshwater inflow regimes that reflect seasonal and yearly fluctuations that vary geographically throughout the state. The flow regimes are based on dilution of saline water with fresh water in whole systems. Because the estuaries are large lagoons, large volumes of fresh water are required to meet standards. However, this volume of water is not available during dry periods. We present a new concept, focused flows, for lower flow volumes that would maintain the ecological health of the upper reaches of estuaries during droughts. The concept is based on maintaining ecological integrity of nursery habitats, which is an important ecological function of estuaries. These focused flows would protect nursery habitats during droughts and allow estuaries to recover more quickly when the hydrology returns to average or higher flow periods. This approach could be applied globally where increasing water infrastructure and deficits are a concern or increasing aridity due to climate change is reducing river flows to coasts. Healthy river ecosystems are conducive to the sustainable use of water resources. As the climate change and human activities become more intense, the integrity of such ecosystems is seriously threatened. The maintenance of enough environmental flow (e‐flow) for river ecosystems is the most effective way of protecting river health. Accurately and reasonably estimating e‐flow is essential for river health maintenance. So far, few methods can quantitatively verify the e‐flow results calculated by various e‐flow methods, which reduces the success rate of ecological restoration projects on a global scale. Therefore, the Tennant method, wetted perimeter (WP) method, and adapted ecological hydraulic radius (AEHRA) method have been recognized by many scholars. The article used the combination of these three methods to calculate the e‐flow and its meeting rate (actual flow/e‐flow) and formed a new framework to verify e‐flow results. First, the Shannon diversity index, index of biological integrity (IBI), and river health index are used to evaluate river health status. Then, we studied the relationship between e‐flow meeting rates and three indices using field monitoring data on hydrology, water quality, and biological communities. Finally, we investigated the effects of different e‐flow calculation methods on river health. Results show that the e‐flow in the centre of the study area calculated by the Tennant and WP methods are relatively high (48.33–317 m3/s), whereas lower e‐flow (0.03–21 m3/s) are observed in its southern and northern parts. The e‐flow in the southern mountain area calculated by the AEHRA method (1.42 m3/s) is higher than those in the other regions determined by the same method. Furthermore, the highest values of river health—the Shannon diversity index (3.19), IBI (67.47), and river health index (0.65)—appear in mountainous areas that are less affected by human activities. The lowest values appear in the urban areas with river health values (0.97, 14.54, and 0.45, respectively) with high population density. For the river health scores, the values of the Shannon diversity index and IBI first increase and then decrease with the increase in the e‐flow meeting rates. The values of river health index continuously increase with the increase in the WP‐ and AEHRA‐calculated e‐flow meeting rate and fluctuate with the increase of Tennant‐calculated e‐flow meeting rate. We concluded that the adoption of WP‐ and AEHRA‐calculated e‐flow values can maintain the health of river ecosystems with a certain degree of pollution, whereas the Tennant‐calculated e‐flow can only ensure the health of river ecosystems with little pollution, the reason for which is the pollution‐affected relationships between river biota communities and stream flows, and the Tennant method uses historical stream flow records to calculate e‐flow. WP and AEHRA methods, on the other hand, do not rely on flow records. The methodologies and results can provide a scientific basis for the selection of suitable e‐flow methods and therefore facilitate the projects for ecological river restoration. There have been increasing calls for the holistic assessment of river condition, moving beyond the traditional focus on water quality and biology alone. Legislation in New Zealand now requires integrated assessments of freshwater ecosystem health. In this paper we report on the application of a framework for New Zealand freshwater assessment, which includes 5 core components—water quality, water quantity, aquatic biota, physical habitat, and ecological processes—in the Tukituki River catchment. Indicators of ecological processes included ecosystem metabolism and cellulose decomposition potential, which were measured and reported alongside other river-health metrics to provide an integrated picture of river ecological integrity at site, stream-type, and catchment scales. Every site in the Tukituki catchment failed to meet bottom-line benchmarks for at least 1 assessment metric. When aggregated by stream type, warm-wet lowland streams in the Tukituki River catchment had the poorest ecosystem health because of poor water quality and quantity. At the catchment scale, the Tukituki scored highly in overall ecosystem health despite 20% of the targeted network failing bottom-line benchmarks for 11 out of 22 metrics. This study demonstrates the value of: 1) a probabilistic sampling design for predicting the spatial extent of stream condition, 2) accounting for environmental variation through a process of data harmonization informed by site-specific reference conditions and bottom-line benchmarks, and 3) involving resource-management practitioners in the development of the assessment framework to ensure that the level of detail is achievable in practice and to provide examples of how the results can inform management actions. Applications could include directing land-use mitigations and stream restoration towards warm-wet lowland areas, where excess phosphorus and aquatic plants proliferate. Finally, we demonstrate how a report-card approach can simultaneously provide information across multiple components and avoid the loss of information. The composition and diversity of parasite communities are useful tools to characterise ecosystem health and integrity. Environmental disturbances may affect parasite infection in fish directly, by their effects on the free-living stages, or indirectly, on the intermediate hosts. Slimy sculpins, Cottus cognatus, a small fish inhabiting cold waters of North America, have been considered as sentinels due to their limited mobility, often occupying relatively small areas throughout their lives and thus reflecting the local environment. Ninety-six specimens of C. cognatus were sampled from four tributaries of the Athabasca River to assess patterns of helminth parasite community structure in this fish and to study the composition and diversity of its parasite communities in relation to water quality. The localities included single samples from High Hills, Horse and Dunkirk rivers, and two from the Steepbank River. Twelve metazoan parasite species were found, most of them being larval forms. Significant differences occurred in the structure and composition of parasite assemblages of sculpins from the tributaries, although similarities were observed in connected and nearby sites. Parasite communities were influenced mainly by a combination of local environmental conditions, distance and connectivity, and were separated based on the distribution and abundance of autogenic and allogenic parasites. Water quality appeared to influence the distribution of trematode species that use gastropods as intermediate hosts, while proximity and connectivity of sites led to sharing allogenic parasite species in slimy sculpin. The restoration community continues to discuss what constitutes good environmental stewardship. One area of tension is the extent to which the well‐being of wild animals should inform restoration efforts. We discuss three ways that the perspective of wild animal welfare can augment restoration ecology: strengthening people's relationship with nature, reinforcing biotic integrity, and reducing mechanistic uncertainty. The animal welfare movement elevates sentient animals as stakeholders and explores how environmental context directly impacts the well‐being of individuals. Viewing wild animals through this lens may encourage people to think and act with empathy and altruism. Second, we incorporate animal welfare into the concept of biotic integrity for ecological and ethical reasons. Restoring ecosystem processes may enhance animal welfare, and vice versa. Alternatively, there may be a trade‐off between these factors, requiring local decision‐makers to prioritize between restoring ecosystem function and promoting individuals' well‐being. We conclude by discussing how welfare can impact population recovery, thereby adding insights about mechanisms underpinning restoration objectives. Hunting may be the greatest threat to wildlife populations across the Congo basin. Large-bodied species are the most vulnerable; alterations in assemblages of such keystone species can affect many important ecological functions. There may be a reduction or loss of ecological services, such as seed dispersal. Monitoring functional diversity within a wildlife community alongside descriptions of wildlife community structure (abundances and species richness) increases understanding of how well a system can withstand disturbance, or recover following it (i.e., its ecological resilience). Between 2002 and 2016, changes in wildlife abundance and diversity of functional traits related to resource use and energy flow were monitored in a tropical forest wildlife community in southeast Cameroon, where hunting activities have escalated in the last decade. Wildlife abundances significantly decreased by 2009, and species richness and functional diversity declined by 2016. This reduction in functional diversity suggests that the wildlife community has been considerably altered, compromising ecological functions, and indicating the start of ecological decay. The study found a significant reduction in keystone species, such as great apes and elephants, suggesting that their decline as a result of hunting is leading to ecological imbalance. The results suggest that, beyond a certain threshold of wildlife decline, wildlife community collapse and ecological decay are likely. Identifying such thresholds can inform sustainable wildlife management and help monitor the health or integrity of the ecosystem, and its ability to provide globally significant ecosystem services, such as carbon sequestration and storage. Abstract It is crucial that societies are informed on the risks of impoverished ecosystem health for their well-being. For this purpose, Ecological Integrity (EI) is a useful concept that seeks to capture the complex nature of ecosystems and their interaction with social welfare. But the challenge remains to measure EI and translate scientific terminology into operational language to inform society. We propose an approach that simplifies marine ecosystem complexity by applying scientific knowledge to identify which components reflect the state or state change of ecosystems. It follows a bottom-up structure that identifies, based on expert knowledge, biological components related with past and present changing conditions. It is structured in 5 stages that interact in an adaptive way: stage 1, in situ observations suggest changes could be happening; stage 2 explores available data that represent EI; stage 3, experts' workshops target the identification of the minimum set of variables needed to define EI, or the risk of losing EI; an optative stage 4, where deviance from EI, or risk of deviance, is statistically assessed; stage 5, findings are communicated to society. We demonstrate the framework effectiveness in three case studies, including a data poor situation, an area where lack of reference sites hampers the identification of historical changes, and an area where diffuse sources of stress make it difficult to identify simple relationships with of ecological responses. The future challenge is to operationalise the approach and trigger desirable society actions to strengthen a social-nature link. The Index of Biotic Integrity (IBI) has been widely used since the 1980s to estimate ecological integrity—the capacity of an ecosystem to support and maintain its full range of components and processes. Despite this, IBI approaches have been criticized for their lack of objectivity, of justification for the selection of metrics, and of statistical rigor. In this paper, we assessed the potential of canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) and Structural equation modeling (SEM) as complementary methods for assessing ecological integrity. We use an iconic freshwater ecosystem dataset from Northeastern Illinois to assess ecological integrity using both classical IBI approach, and compare this with alternative methods. When we attempt to replicate the IBI methodology, we find issues with the approach including the possibility of the same IBI value for many possible levels of ecological integrity. We showed with the use of other methods (CCA) that the use of tolerant species, total abundance, and total richness—all defining components in IBI —can result in misleading interpretations of ecological integrity and that IBI scores might not comprehensively depict integrity scenarios. Structural equation modeling allowed us to test a conceptual causal model of ecological integrity. We found that water quality had an effect on the diversity and abundance of fish, and these in turn had an effect on trophic function, revealing important relationships between variables that contribute to ecological integrity. We conclude that CCA and SEM can complement multimetric indices, like IBI, and help with the development of more reliable, objective, and science-based estimations of ecosystem integrity, as well as generate testable hypotheses about ecological integrity. One of the most influential environmental laws in the US - the 1972 Clean Water Act - included the visionary objective of maintaining and restoring aquatic ecological integrity. However, the efficacy of the Act depends on how integrity is assessed. Reviewing the assessment literature for fresh waters over the past 40 years, we found evidence of methodological trends toward increased repeatability, transferability, and robustness of assessments over time. However, implementation gaps were revealed, based on the relatively weak linkages to freshwater policies, stakeholder involvement, emerging threats, and conservation opportunities. A related survey of assessment practitioners underscored the disparity between need versus availability of assessments that guide management policies. Technological changes in data collection and synthesis have clearly influenced assessments, and appear to have led to a reduced reliance on ecological response indicators and corresponding increases in stressor-based metrics. We recommend designing assessments around specific freshwater policies and regulations to improve applicability of assessment products for management and conservation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Koshi River Basin is in the middle of the Himalayas, a tributary of the Ganges River and a very important cross-border watershed. Across the basin there are large changes in altitude, habitat complexity, ecosystem integrity, land cover diversity and regional difference and this area is sensitive to global climate change. Based on Landsat TM images, vegetation mapping, field investigations and 3S technology, we compiled high-precision land cover data for the Koshi River Basin and analyzed current land cover characteristics. We found that from source to downstream, land cover in the Koshi River Basin in 2010 was composed of water body (glacier), bare land, sparse vegetation, grassland, wetland, shrubland, forest, cropland, water body (river or lake) and built-up areas. Among them, grassland, forest, bare land and cropland are the main types, accounting for 25.83%, 21.19%, 19.31% and 15.09% of the basin's area respectively. The composition and structure of the Koshi River Basin land cover types are different between southern and northern slopes. The north slope is dominated by grassland, bare land and glacier; forest, bare land and glacier are mainly found on northern slopes. Northern slopes contain nearly seven times more grassland than southern slopes; while 97.13% of forest is located on southern slopes. Grassland area on northern slope is 6.67 times than on southern slope. The vertical distribution of major land cover types has obvious zonal characteristics. Land cover types from low to high altitudes are cropland, forest, Shrubland and mixed cropland, grassland, sparse vegetation, bare land and water bodies. These results provide a scientific basis for the study of land use and cover change in a critical region and will inform ecosystem protection, sustainability and management in this and other alpine transboundary basins.
