This article discusses the creation of student-run record labels as coursework for several colleges' music industry programs. Berklee College has a year-long practicum for senior music industry students that involves producing and marketing a CD, as well as organizing a concert. Professors are using these record labels as a way to give students real-life experience. Musicians such as John McLaughlin signed to major labels after getting their starts on student-run labels.
