Abstract

Parents of mentally ill children tend to be veterans of various therapies and be skeptical about their overall efficacy. Mental health professionals still need to build collaborative relationships with them and must understand how parents express their dilemma. Parental perspectives are evident in the stories they tell about past therapy but may only come out with extensive interaction. A study of such expression was done involving 19 parents and one grandparent in a child psychiatrict unit of a nonprofit, inner-city medical center.
