Aim: This study aims to implement team‐based learning (TBL) and assess the impact on faculty members and students within midwifery education in Indonesia. Methods: Proctor's Framework for Implementation Research serves as the guiding approach in investigating the role of implementation strategies in implementing TBL within the context of midwifery education. The RE‐AIM (Reach, Efficacy, Adoption, Implementation, and Maintenance) framework was utilized to assess the outcome. Results: In this study, the implementation of TBL has demonstrated significant reach, with broad participation among both faculty and students in two schools. The efficacy of TBL is evident through enhanced student knowledge, engagement and active learning. Adoption of TBL was observed in both schools, with faculty and students expressing interest and active participation. High levels of implementation fidelity were maintained, even though with challenges related to preparation and implementation. These findings suggest that TBL can be successfully integrated into midwifery education, with positive implications. Regarding maintenance, faculty members have expressed their intention to continue using TBL in various topics for future lectures. Conclusions: The implementation of TBL in Indonesian midwifery education has shown substantial reach and efficacy. Faculty and students are highly interested in adopting TBL for future use. Despite some implementation challenges, the study suggests that TBL can be effectively incorporated with minor adjustments, emphasizing its feasibility and potential impact. The increase in digital teaching and learning methodologies creates the opportunity for new educational approaches, both in terms of pedagogical practice and in the availability of new technological tools. The flipped classroom as an active teaching methodology is one example of blended learning (b-learning), which aims to harmonize and enhance the fusion of face-to-face teaching with online teaching, allowing students to get better use of both face-to-face contact with classmates and professors and digital teaching resources. However, active teaching methodologies allow us to merge educational techniques from different methodological approaches, for example, gamification and team-based learning (TBL), among others. This study aims to demonstrate how to implement a flipped classroom with the possibility of integrating gamification and TBL, indicating possibilities and challenges to overcome, through the comparative study and research carried out with students in higher education. The study was conducted with a group of 88 students from the engineering and technology fields, which showed that students have a very positive perception of active teaching methodologies and their teaching and learning techniques, especially those involving digital. Data collection was performed by a survey submitted to quantitative analysis using the Software SPSS version 28.

Background & Objective: The use of team-based learning (TBL) as one of the active learning strategies in the education of nursing students is expanding. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of employing the TBL method on improving the knowledge of the cardiovascular system in nursing students. Materials & Methods: This semi-experimental study was conducted on nursing students of Hormozgan University of Medical Sciences, Hormozgan, Iran, in 2017. The students were divided into intervention (TBL method) and comparison (traditional lecture method) groups. The intervention group was taught by the TBL method, while the control group received teaching by the lecture method during three 2-hour sessions. Pre-test and post-test were administered to all students. The data were analyzed using SPSS23 software and the significance level was considered ≤ 0.05. This paper provides a synopsis of discussions related to the Learning Environments track of the Fourth BME Education Summit held at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio in May 2019. This summit was organized by the Council of Chairs of Bioengineering and Biomedical Engineering, and participants included over 300 faculty members from 100+ accredited undergraduate programs. The Learning Environments track had six interactive workshops that provided facilitated discussion and provide recommendations in the areas of: (1) Authentic project/problem identification in clinical, industrial, and global settings, (2) Experiential problem/project-based learning within courses, (3) Experiential learning in co-curricular learning settings, (4) Team-based learning, (5) Teaching to reach a diverse classroom, and (6) innovative platforms and pedagogy. A summary of the findings, best practices and recommendations from each of the workshops is provided under separate headings below, and a list of resources is provided at the end of this paper.

Active learning is a paradigm where students take a more active role in their learning process. In this paper, two team-based evaluation activities are established for students according to the principles of active learning in order to assess their knowledge, skills and attitudes. These activities were based on scenarios related to network administration issues, and at a later stage, each team had to make a pitch presentation about what they did and how they did it to address them. Each presentation was rated by all students with a specific construct on a peer review basis, which had previously been validated by a panel of experts. The results obtained revealed quite high values with low variability and an acceptable reliability. Additionally, the level of motivation was also assessed, indicating a high level of motivation while undertaking the activities.

The COVID-19 pandemic caused a sudden shift to virtual platforms. Physical distance and limited experience with both synchronous and asynchronous teamwork at work and school hampered problem-solving and the development of critical thinking skills. Under these circumstances, the implementation of team-based and problem-based learning (TBL, PBL, respectively) required a reevaluation of how teams collaborate and engage in problem-solving remotely. The research team conducted a systematic review to identify health services studies, themes, and attributes of learning initiatives associated with the success of TBL and PBL conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic. This systematic review was conducted using the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analysis (PRISMA) guidelines. The review results identified three themes associated with TBL and PBL learning initiatives in health services: (1) TBL and PBL have transformed health services education with modified TBL (mTBL) and modified PBL (mPBL) as the new norms; (2) the amplification of age-appropriate principles for professional motivation in healthcare; and (3) active learning impacts practical abilities for professional success and future leadership roles. The pandemic underscored the importance of flexibility, resilience, and innovation in TBL and PBL approaches in health services education. Despite the superiority of mPBL and mTBL, the barriers to implementation and student acceptance of active learning include inadequate resource and space allocation, and student preferences for passive, traditional lecture. Further, online learning required increased facilitator training, administration time, and time to provide feedback.

Introduction Obesity is a multifactorial chronic disease and a major contributor to numerous health conditions. Despite the high prevalence, costs, and health effects of obesity, physicians are largely unprepared to treat it. Most medical students and residents lack sufficient training in obesity and obesity management. Methods We evaluated a two-part team-based learning seminar (TBL) on obesity pathogenesis and treatment for first-year medical students at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine (CWRU SOM). A questionnaire on attitudes toward obesity and self-perceived knowledge of obesity was administered before and after the TBL, utilizing Likert scales. Results Of 183 medical students who attended both TBLs, 155 (85%) completed the baseline questionnaire, and 127 (69%) completed the postintervention questionnaire. Confidence in treating obesity increased significantly from preintervention (M = 2.7, SD = 1.0) to postintervention (M = 3.7, SD = 0.8). The attitude that obesity is caused by poor personal choices decreased significantly from preintervention (M = 2.8, SD = 0.9) to postintervention (M = 2.1, SD = 0.9). Self-perceived knowledge of obesity in all nine areas—epidemiology, energy homeostasis, etiologies, nutrition, physical activity, behavior, pharmacology, surgery, and language—increased significantly. Discussion Despite obesity being one of the most prevalent health concerns, obesity education in medical school is scant. This TBL resulted in improved attitudes toward obesity and self-perceived knowledge of obesity among first-year medical students at CWRU SOM and offers a practical mechanism to introduce more obesity education into undergraduate medical curricula.

BACKGROUND: Team-based learning (TBL) encourages learners to think critically to solve problems they will face in practice. Pharmacokinetic dosing and monitoring are complex skills requiring the application of learned knowledge. The study sought to assess the impact of a TBL, vancomycin dosing activity in a Pharmaceutical Skills IV course measured with exam question performance during the second professional year. METHODS: This retrospective, descriptive study relates a TBL activity, assigned to 85 students, which included an individual student pre-preparation quiz, assigned readings, in-class individual and team-based readiness assessments, small group application of a vancomycin patient case, and group discussion/feedback on clinical decisions with supportive reasoning. The class year before and class year of the TBL implementation were compared using the total percentage of points possible earned by the class years, by topic. To minimize potential confounding, the primary outcome was the change in topic performance by the rank difficulty (e.g., the largest possible benefit being the hardest topic becoming the easiest with no other variation in topic rank difficulty). RESULTS: In the year of implementation, the mean individual readiness assurance test (IRAT) performance was 5.5 ± 1.88 (10 points possible, 55%). The mean team readiness assurance test (TRAT) performance was 10 of 10 points possible (100%). The class exam item performance in the year before (n = 101) and year of (n = 84) TBL implementation showed a general decline in exam scores. However, the vancomycin topic difficultly went from fifth easiest, to second easiest, with less than 1% change in raw score. CONCLUSIONS: Implementation of a pharmacokinetic TBL activity appeared to moderately support the students' vancomycin learning. Additional studies are warranted on APPE readiness and performance. This article reports a synthesis and meta-analysis of intervention studies investigating the effects of team-based learning on content knowledge outcomes. Team-based learning is a particular set of instructional components most often used in higher education classrooms. Authors of team-based learning reviews report that team-based learning improves students’ end of course grades, test performance, and classroom engagement. Students report that team-based learning is interesting, allows for deeper understanding of content, and prepares them more effectively for assessment and course performance. A total of 30 studies were located and synthesized. In total, 17 studies met criteria for a meta-analysis, yielding a mean effect size estimate of 0.55, p < 0.001 across all measures. Moderator analysis indicated that group size moderated the magnitude of effect to a statistically significant degree, with smaller group sizes contributing to additional effects. The meta-analysis is followed by a confirmatory synthesis of the remaining 13 studies. Implications for instruction incorporating the use of team-based learning are described.

Group and community intervention is applied course of social psychology. Several studies show the use of modified problem-based learning and team-based learning methods is effective to achieve the objectives of applied courses. This study aimed to see the effectivity of applying modified problem-based learning and team-based learning methods on group and community intervention course material in increasing students’ understanding. One-group pre test – post test experimental research design was used to conduct this study. The subjects were students who take group and community intervention courses. Data is taken from quiz score given before and after the intervention. Team-based Learning (TBL) is a global educational strategy designed to inculcate self-directed and active learning. There is a new breed of students who are exposed to restricted and compromised teaching and learning methods via online platforms amidst this COVID-19 pandemic. Therefore, this innovation aims to explore the application of active learning among undergraduate medical students through virtual TBL. In this pilot study, the concept of genomics technology is introduced virtually through online platforms, Microsoft TeamsTM and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) Learning Management System (UKMFolioTM), while maintaining the principles of TBL. Emphasis is placed on applying the fundamental knowledge learnt during the preparation phase through team discussions and subsequent pitching presentation. Our study revealed no significant difference (p = 0.404) in the mean score between students who participated in conventional face-to-face TBL sessions and virtual TBL. This suggests that active and self-directed learning can be integrated through virtual means with reproducible excellent results similar to conventional face-to-face TBL. Abstract Background We have shown that use of Team-based learning (TBL) in a first-year Infectious Diseases (ID) course improved final examination and course performance. Therefore, we implemented TBL in the second-year Women’s Health (WH) course to improve acquisition of course content. We hypothesized that prior experience with TBL in the first-year of medical school would lead to a strong correlation between TBL performance in the first and second years. Methods Our study is a retrospective review of student TBL and final examination performance in the ID and WH courses. The ID course has weekly TBL exercises that cover all course material, while the WH course has one TBL that covers a small portion of the course material. Final examination and TBL individual readiness assurance test (iRAT) scores in the ID and WH courses from three classes (n = 226) were obtained with institutional review board approval. Statistical analyses were performed including comparisons of means and correlation studies. Results Average WH iRAT scores were significantly higher than ID iRAT scores (9.19 vs. 7.40,p 0.05, respectively). Conclusions Our results suggest that prior experience with TBL improves TBL iRAT scores, especially in struggling students. Prior TBL experience is also associated with consistent iRAT performance between first- and second-year courses in high performing students.

This study investigated the effects of an online interprofessional education (IPE) program on nursing students at a university in Japan. It conducted a comparative analysis between traditional face-to-face and online interventions. All students who enrolled in the “Team Medical Practice” course in both 2019 and 2020 were invited to participate. After team-based learning with different healthcare professions, we quantitatively analyzed pre- and post-intervention outcomes using two measures: the Readiness for Interprofessional Learning Scale (RIPLS) and the IPE Questionnaire TSUKUBA model (IPET). We compared the results of 153 nursing students. The RIPLS results demonstrate significant pre- and post-intervention score differences in the teamwork and collaboration subscale for the online group only. The post-IPE score analysis revealed that scores were significantly higher in the online group in all subscales: Teamwork and collaboration, Opportunities for IPE, and Uniqueness of profession. Based on the IPET results, there were no significant differences in pre- and post-intervention scores. However, the online group showed a significant increase in post-intervention scores in participation in group work, thoughts about the team in health and welfare, and thoughts about interprofessional collaboration. These findings indicate that the online IPE program improved nursing students’ readiness for interprofessional learning, demonstrating practical efficacy.

IntroductionOur study aims to identify, appraise, and summarize randomized controlled trials (RCT) on the effectiveness of team-based learning (TBL) versus lecture-based learning (LBL) in nursing students.MethodsWe searched PubMed, Ovid, Embase, Cochrane, CBM, VIP, CNKI, and Wan Fang databases from inception to 22nd July 2022 to enroll RCTs that compared TBL versus LBL. The studies reporting the performance of nursing students receiving TBL pedagogy compared to those receiving traditional lecture-based learning (LBL) were to be analyzed. Scores of academic or nursing abilities were considered the primary outcome, and the results of nursing competencies, students' engagement with, behaviors, attitudes toward, experience, satisfaction, or perceptions of TBL were considered the secondary outcome. This systematic review was conducted following the guidelines of the Cochrane Reviewer's Handbook and the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses statement.ResultsA total of 1,009 participants in 10 RCTs were enrolled in this study. Of the 10 RCTs, eight studies investigated undergraduate students, one involved vocational college students, and one enrolled secondary school students. The most reported outcomes were class engagement survey toward TBL (n = 8); students' ability (n = 5), academic knowledge or performance (n = 4); students' experience (n = 4), satisfaction or perceptions of TBL (n = 4).ConclusionThis review suggested that the TBL was an effective pedagogy in improving academic performance and general ability in nursing students. High-quality trials are needed, and standardized outcomes should be used.

ABSTRAK Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian pengembangan perangkat pembelajaran yang bertujuan untuk menghasilkan perangkat pembelajaran yang berkualitas. Rumusan masalah penelitian ini adalah bagaimana kualitas perangkat pembelajaran yang dikembangkan dengan model pembelajaran Team Based Learning. Perangkat pembelajaran ini dikembangan dengan menggunakan model pengembangan Plomp. Teknik pengumpulan data yaitu dengan validitas melalui validasi perangkat, kepraktisan melalui observasi keterlaksanaan, angket respon guru dan peserta peserta didik. Dari penelitian ini diperoleh hasil: (1) perangkat yang dikembangkan valid melalui uji validitas konstruk dengan rata-rata persentase validitas untuk silabus sebesar 98,33% dengan kategori valid, RPP sebesar 78,48% termasuk kategori valid dengan revisi kecil, bahan ajar sebesar 79,68% termasuk kategori valid dengan revisi kecil, dan LKPD sebesar 76,04% yang termasuk dalam kategori valid dengan revisi kecil; (2) perangkat yang dikembangkan praktis ditunjukkan oleh rata-rata presentase keterlaksanaan pembelajaran sebesar 92,26% kategori sangat baik, kemudian respon guru terhadap perangkat pembelajaran yang dikembangkan sebesar 99,39% kategori sangat baik serta respon peserta didik terhadap proses pembelajaran menggunakan perangkat yang dikembangkan sebesar 82,66% kategori baik. The formulation of the research problem is how the quality of learning tools developed with the Team-Based Learning learning model is. This learning device was developed using the Plomp development model. Data collection techniques are valid through device validation, practicality through implementation observation, teacher and student response questionnaires. From this study obtained results: (1) devices developed valid through construct validity tests with an average percentage validity for syllabus of 98.33% with valid categories, RPP of 78.48% including valid categories with small revisions, teaching materials of 79.68% including valid categories with minor revisions, and LKPD of 76.04% which fall into valid categories with minor revisions; (2) devices developed practically indicated by an average percentage of learning implementation of 92.26% excellent category, then teacher response to learning devices developed by 99.39% excellent category and learners' response to the learning process using developed devices by 82.66% good category. Conclusions: Our results suggest that prior experience with TBL improves TBL iRAT scores, especially in struggling students. This meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of team-based learning in radiology education. Data sources and selection criteria Databases were searched from inception up to August 2019 and included Pubmed, Medline, Embase, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Chinese Wanfang Database, and Chinese VIP. Randomized trials comparing teaching approaches for medical imaging of which provide the outcomes of theoretical scores and/or practical scores were included. Data were extracted independently by two authors and double-checked for accuracy. Outcomes included knowledge scores and practical scores. We pooled data using random-effects meta-analysis. Twelve trials involving 1,371 participants were included. Team-based learning teaching method had positive impacts on theoretical scores compared with the lecture-based learning or traditional teaching method (SMD = 1.07, 95% CI [0.50, 1.63]) and it positively improved skill scores (SMD = 0.68, 95% CI [0.19, 1.17]). Team-based learning could not only improve theoretical and skill scores in medical imaging courses but also encourage students to learn by themselves. Participants believed team-based learning raised their learning interest, team cooperation ability, and interpersonal communication skills. Contribution: This article presents agile software engineers stick together (ASEST+), an improved version of a framework called ASEST that aims to develop team cohesion, leading to better team learning and software engineering student teams. Background: Effective teamwork is crucial for agile software development’s success and is, therefore, a key topic of current software engineering education. In the previous work, a preliminary proposal for ASEST+ was presented. Here, an improved version, more suitable for agile practice education and considering cohesion antecedents, is described. Intended Outcome: A teaching-learning framework to support teamwork in agile software education. Application Design: ASEST+ is built around Scrum teams and combines learning strategies to train students in collaborative and technical agile practices. ASEST+ establishes policies for role allocation and team rule agreements to regulate communication and address conflict management agile practices. ASEST+ addresses personality traits, conflict resolution, and task interdependence as the antecedents identified as the most important. Findings: A quasiexperiment showed that the use of ASEST+ significantly increases the students’ positive perceptions on team cohesion, team performance, and team learning compared with the control group. The benefits of team learning include increased achievement, increased motivation, and greater retention of concepts learned. While team learning has been implemented since the early 20th century, instructors in higher education settings may still experience challenges managing implementation, such as unmotivated students and a lack of accountability among group members. One team learning pedagogy is team-based learning (TBL), a structured course design that combines individual preparation with collaborative problem-solving. Given the benefits of TBL in face-to-face settings, including student learning and improved attitudes, educators have also adapted TBL to online settings. This embedded mixed-method study examined students’ perceptions of TBL in face-to-face and online teacher education courses. We found that students in TBL courses, regardless of delivery method, reported positive perceptions of TBL, and commonly identified the course structure and teams as the most effective aspects of the course.

Introduction The underlying immune mechanisms of renal diseases are complex, and medical students benefit from learning these complexities in the setting of team-based learning (TBL), where they can apply foundational immunologic concepts to clinical problems. Methods This immune-mediated renal disease TBL module focusing on glomerular disease was delivered over a period of 2 consecutive years in an integrated cardiovascular, pulmonary, and renal block within the second semester of the first year of medical school. Each class consisted of 53 students, for a total of 106 students. The TBL module consisted of a seven-question individual and team readiness assurance test (iRAT and tRAT) and two clinically relevant team application activities. Following the TBL module, students completed an 18-item survey that collected information on student perspectives of engagement. Results For the 2-year period, the iRAT average scores were 73% and 74%, and the tRAT average scores were 100% and 99%, respectively. The survey assessing student perceptions of engagement yielded positive feedback. Discussion In summary, this TBL module effectively integrates the foundational and clinical sciences to teach higher-order concepts in immunology and renal disease pathogenesis to medical students.

Background: The lecture-based learning (LBL) implemented in most Indonesian nursing/midwifery schools underlies the students' lack of ability in clinical reasoning. Team-based learning (TBL) was proposed to improve the students' ability in clinical reasoning as it is applying a course concept of real complex scenarios. In this study, we aimed to assess and compare the effects of TBL and LBL of postpartum hemorrhage topics on the clinical reasoning and classroom engagement of midwifery students in Indonesia. Methods: We conducted a cluster randomized controlled trial to compare the effects of TBL and LBL. The unit was schools and random allocation was conducted using a simple random sampling method (i.e., coin flipping). There was 1 cluster in the intervention group (n = 62 students) and 1 cluster in the control group (n = 53 students). The students in the intervention group participated in a TBL class (90 min) three times, whereas the students in the control group attended an LBL class on postpartum hemorrhage topics. The primary outcome was the clinical reasoning on postpartum hemorrhage score measured at pre-test, post-test, and 2 weeks post-test. The secondary outcome was Classroom Engagement Survey (CES) score measured after each class finished. We used an unpaired t-test to evaluate the differences between the two groups. The baseline characteristics of the participants were compared using standardized difference. Results: We evaluated a total of 115 participants. Regarding the baseline characteristics, there was a small difference in the age, Grade Point Average and knowledge at pre-test between the intervention and control groups. The mean clinical reasoning on postpartum hemorrhage scores were significantly higher in the TBL students than in the LBL students at post-test (p <.001; Cohen's d = 1.41) and 2 weeks post-test (p <.001; Cohen's d = 1.50). The CES showed a significantly higher in the intervention group than in the control group. Conclusions: TBL is an effective learning method for enhancing the clinical reasoning ability of students. This learning method allows for more independent and active learning. The current article constitutes in an excerpt from the Mater’s Degree research entitled as “The use of the Team-Based Learning (TBL) Methodology allied to technology: Perceptions over the learning of basic accounting in the Technical Course in Administration”. The question that guided the development of this Master's research was: can the Team-Based Learning (TBL) active methodology allied to digital technology provide collective learning of basic accounting concepts in the Technical Course in Administration? Based on this inquiry, the main purpose of the study presented in this article was to evaluate the contributions of the use of the TBL methodology, combined with the free platform TBL Active, which was created to assist in the application of this active methodology, in learning the basic concepts of Accounting in the technical course in Administration. The approach adopted was the quali-quantitative one since this study combined qualitative and quantitative methods in an intervention research. The development of this research took place in a public school, in the technical course in Administration, placed in the countryside of São Paulo/Brazil. Therefore, the participants were set as a class of 34 students. The observation and application of surveys were used as data collection tools. The main results showed the occurrence of collective learning of Accounting. Other than that, when comparing the individual answers to the collective answers, it showed significative successes. The active participation and the significative learning of the given content were achieved by means of the Team-Based Learning Methodology.

Abstract Background Being an effective team member is one of the key twenty-first century skills and a fundamental proficiency required for jobs and work settings in an increasingly global economy. Collaborative problem-solving in team settings is a critical practice in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields as an effective teaching method that is found to promote outcomes associated with individual student learning and the quality of team solutions. However, the social and discursive dynamics of a team can impact these outcomes. The primary goal of this study was to examine the different types of verbal episodes (questions, conflict, and reasoning episodes) in engineering student teams and how these verbal interactions related to the individual and team performances. Results Our results showed that different verbal episodes played a significant role on students’ individual success and team performance. Students spent most of their time on question episodes, followed by reasoning episodes, and less frequently so on conflict episodes. The linear combination of question, conflict, and reasoning episodes was significantly related to students’ individual achievement scores. Specifically, the number of question episodes was the best predictor of individual performance. And among six subcategories of question episodes, three (open question, verification answer, and elaborated answer) were significantly correlated with the individual achievement scores. Furthermore, according to the regression model, elaborated answer category was significantly related to individual achievement compared to all other categories. In terms of team performance, results showed that reasoning episodes were significantly related to team performance, and the calculation subcategory of reasoning episodes was the best predictor of team performance. Finally, we found that the teams with more balanced participation among team members performed significantly better than the teams with unequal participation among team members. Conclusions These results suggest different verbal episodes are related to individual and team outcomes. Discourse in teams is critical not only for the improvement of academic achievement for individuals but also for the development of better team solutions. Moreover, balanced participation from all team members is important, suggesting teams should be formed, monitored, and supported to ensure balanced participation. Our results recommend that educators should monitor team interactions and promote verbal exchanges that promote student learning and positive team outcomes.

The purpose of this study is to identify students’ reactions to the implementation of team-based learning as an instructional strategy in a pharmacology course in the context of a Turkish university. Team-based learning is defined as an active form of learning that not only encourages individual effort but also team involvement to learn in an academic setting. Team-based learning is one of the learning techniques/methods that is increasingly being used in medical education. Literature shows that in team-based learning students apply the concepts at the time they are learned in the classroom, before the exams, as opposed to traditional lecturing, in which the concepts that are learned are later tested in the exams. Furthermore, research supports that faculty are more engaged with their students in team-based learning, since it affords instructors the ability to readily identify what their students are achieving, as opposed to traditional lecturing or other group approaches. There are limited studies in Turkey that examine the applications of team-based learning in a higher education setting. Therefore, this study describes the use of the team-based learning technique in an undergraduate health science course in Turkey. The initial results indicate that this instructional strategy was beneficial for students’ learning.

Technical writing is a crucial skill for engineering students’ effective written communication, which shapes and affects their professional careers. This study designs team-based learning (TBL) instructional modules that are integrated into an existing engineering laboratory curriculum and evaluates their feasibility and effectiveness in improving engineering students’ technical writing skills. The data were collected from structured survey questions distributed to student participants and from the instructor’s independent evaluation of students’ lab reports. The effect of assigning a team leader on students’ writing performances was also evaluated. Our results indicated that students who have received TBL modules perceive a greater improvement in their technical writing skills than those who did not. A strong correlation was found between students’ perception and the instructor’s evaluation of the students’ technical writing skills. Assigning a team leader in TBL instructional modules has not played a significant role in improving engineering students’ technical writing skills. The same happens with gender. Overall, utilization of TBL instructional modules can advance engineering students’ technical writing skills.

Introduction A frequently encountered complaint in primary care, pain has a variety of causes and treatments. To reduce mortality, the Centers for Disease Control released guidelines on opioid prescribing in 2016. Taking those guidelines into account, this team-based learning (TBL) module for third-year medical students on their family medicine clinical clerkship serves as an introductory application for treatment of nociceptive and neuropathic pain. Methods Students accessed preparticipation reading material online 1 week before the session. After students had been arranged into groups for the 1-hour module, each student completed an individual readiness assessment test (iRAT). Next, each group completed the group readiness assessment test (gRAT) using Immediate Feedback-Assessment Technique cards to give its answers. To complete the more complex learning objectives, groups answered the multiple-choice team application (tAPP) questions. Results Over 2 years, this module was administered to more than 400 students. Average iRAT scores were approximately 80% and gRAT scores nearly 100%. Groups scored approximately 70% on the tAPP questions. Students rated the module on a 5-point Likert scale (1 = strongly disagree, 5 = strongly agree) and provided individual comments. The course always received a score of at least 4, as well as consistent positive feedback. Discussion The module can easily be embedded into a preexisting clinical clerkship didactic series. It can also serve as a platform on which to build additional TBL modules following a more longitudinal course and more in-depth skills development in pain management.

Introduction It is estimated that approximately one-tenth of the US population suffers from substance use disorders (SUD), a problem that is compounded when one considers the impact that drug addiction could have on treatment outcomes for many other chronic diseases. Thus, addiction medicine has become an important component of many successful urban primary care practices and residencies across the country. Our program sought to improve the confidence of our residents in managing SUD by instituting a team-based learning (TBL) activity that focused on the diagnosis and medication-assisted treatment of these illnesses. Methods The class of 80 internal medicine residents were divided into groups of approximately 16 residents, and during the TBL sessions further divided into teams of three to four. Each TBL session consisted of an individual readiness assurance test, a group discussion of the correct answers, and a PowerPoint-based team application activity. Surveys were conducted for each group to assess the residents' attitudes after completing the activity. Results Of residents, 69 of 80 completed the survey. The response to the TBL exercise was overwhelmingly positive, with most residents in agreement that the activity increased their knowledge and confidence in diagnosing and treating patients with SUD. Discussion Overall, this TBL activity was well received by the residents and subjectively increased their competence in managing patients with SUD. In addition, our modification to the traditional TBL format suggested that the theories and spirit behind TBL can be successfully adapted to meet the challenges and intricacies of internal medicine residency education.

Introduction Differences in sex development (DSD) are a heterogenous group of conditions estimated to affect 1 in 4500 infants. A paradigm shift has occurred in societal and cultural acceptance of variant gender outcomes along with increased awareness around diagnostic uncertainty inherent to DSD. Lack of provider knowledge in evaluation of DSD and/or awareness of evolving paradigms relevant to care for patients with DSD can accentuate barriers to access optimal care for this already vulnerable population. Methods To address this unmet need, we used Kern's six-step framework and piloted a team-based learning (TBL) activity for pediatric residents and medical students (36 learners). This included preactivity reading, an 11-item self-efficacy survey around treatment of patients with DSD at the beginning of the TBL, and a seven-question individual readiness assurance test (RAT). Mixed teams of five to seven learners completed the RAT in small groups followed by large-group discussion. An application exercise followed with two cases focused on initial evaluation of a newborn/child with suspected DSD and an older child with suspected DSD. At the conclusion, learners repeated the self-efficacy measure and answered several evaluation questions. Results Individual RAT scores had a mean of 59%, while groups scored with a mean of 82%. Mean self-efficacy scores also increased significantly from 2.4 to 3.4 on a 5-point scale. Of learners, 80% agreed or strongly agreed that the activity was effective for improving DSD skills and knowledge. Discussion TBL is a valuable educational strategy to enhance knowledge and self-efficacy of DSD care for general pediatricians.

Aims and objectives: To explore the use and student outcomes of Team‐Based Learning in nursing education. Background: Team‐Based Learning is a highly structured, evidence‐based, student‐centred learning strategy that enhances student engagement and facilitates deep learning in a variety of disciplines including nursing. However, the breadth of Team‐Based Learning application in nursing education and relevant outcomes are not currently well understood. Design: A scoping review of international, peer‐reviewed research studies was undertaken according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta‐Analyses extension for scoping reviews. Methods: The following databases were searched on 7 May 2020: Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allied Health Literature, MEDLINE Complete, PsycINFO and Education Resources Information Center. Search terms related to nursing, education and Team‐Based Learning. Original research studies, published in English, and reporting on student outcomes from Team‐Based Learning in nursing education programmes were included. Results: Of the 1081 potentially relevant citations, 41 studies from undergraduate (n = 29), postgraduate (n = 4) and hospital (n = 8) settings were included. The most commonly reported student outcomes were knowledge or academic performance (n = 21); student experience, satisfaction or perceptions of Team‐Based Learning (n = 20); student engagement with behaviours or attitudes towards Team‐Based Learning (n = 12); and effect of Team‐Based Learning on teamwork, team performance or collective efficacy (n = 6). Only three studies reported clinical outcomes. Conclusions: Over the last decade, there has been a growing body of knowledge related to the use of Team‐Based Learning in nursing education. The major gaps identified in this scoping review were the lack of randomised controlled trials and the dearth of studies of Team‐Based Learning in postgraduate and hospital contexts. Relevance to clinical practice: This scoping review provides a comprehensive understanding of the use and student outcomes of Team‐Based Learning in nursing education and highlights the breadth of application of Team‐Based Learning and variability in the outcomes reported. Team-based learning (TBL) has been successfully applied to multiple healthcare education disciplines. A primary tenet of TBL is the development of solutions leveraging the collective knowledge of a team rather than the individual competency of any one student. In an effort to enhance individual student accountability, an individual verbal defense (IVD) format was implemented in a multi-campus TBL-based pharmacotherapeutics course. The study sought to investigate the use of TBL-IVD embedded within a traditional TBL format on student engagement, teaching style preferences, and exam performance compared to a TBL-only format. In this cross-sectional study, second-year pharmacy students enrolled in a pharmacotherapeutics course during fall 2019 completed an 11-item survey. The survey was designed to assess TBL-IVD on student engagement and teaching style preference. Free-response qualitative feedback was solicited to assess positive-negative themes related to the activity. Aggregate exam performance for community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) related content was compared to historical exam data to assess the impact on student performance. The majority of students (72%, n = 54) preferred the TBL-IVD compared to a TBL-only format. Students reported higher engagement with TBL-IVD (84%, n = 63). Correct exam responses for CAP related content were higher in the TBL-IVD group (67% vs. 55%, P <.001). Positive themes included an increased opportunity to defend recommendations verbally and increased interaction with an on-campus faculty member. The study demonstrates the addition of IVD can enhance student perceptions, confidence, and performance within a large, multi-campus, TBL-based pharmacotherapeutics course. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Team-based Learning (TBL) is a teaching approach that fosters active learning and promotes the application of knowledge; its implementation remains sporadic and on a volunteering basis in Sudan. The aim of this study was to investigate the perception of Sudanese physiologist concerning the implementation of TBL. Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study included all physiologists in Sudan during 2018. Data were collected using qualitative and quantitative methods, namely, questionnaire and nominal group technique (NGT), respectively. Results: This study was the first national-scale study on TBL in Sudan, the study adds to the evidence of the benefits of TBL: improving the engagement of students, enhancing deep learning, and providing better instructor--student interaction. Furthermore, TBL was perceived to be of good use in tutorials. However, although TBL is perceived well by instructors, its implementation revealed two main challenges: first, the attendance of the students (and therefore their engagement) is a place of concern mostly because TBL is not well-allocated in the curricula of most medical schools and second, the substantial effort of preparation of TBL material and sessions will put a burden on the staff, rendering them less enthusiastic. Introduction Pediatric residencies are expected to arm trainees with skills in quality improvement (QI) that allow trainees to systematically enhance their own practice. Simulation has been shown to be effective in teaching QI, but there are no published QI simulation tools that target pediatric learners. Methods We adapted a previously developed QI simulation to include a case relevant for pediatric residents. Participants devised interventions using basic QI principles with iterative feedback from facilitators with knowledge of QI methodology. Changes in resident knowledge, attitudes about the curriculum, and depth of engagement in QI were assessed using pre- and posttests, surveys, and assessment of independent QI activities performed prior to graduation, respectively. Results Eighty-two residents completed the simulation. Of the 76 residents who completed both the pre- and posttests, which each had a total possible score of 28 points, 68% had improved posttest scores, with an average score increase of 2.6 points (SD = 0.6, p < .001). Improvements were most pronounced for residents that scored in the lowest quartile on the pretest. After the simulation, residents reported greater confidence in and likelihood of completing a QI initiative. There was no difference in the level of involvement in future independent QI activities completed by residents who were simulation participants compared with nonparticipants. Discussion Adapting a previously published QI simulation for pediatric residents was feasible and effective, and the QI simulation was well-liked by learners. Those with lower baseline QI knowledge may have the most to gain from this simulation.

Introduction While type 1 diabetes is frequently encountered clinically in pediatric endocrinology fellowship training, other types of diabetes may only be encountered in educational settings. Adult learners learn best through knowledge application, but to date there are no published curricula utilizing application educational strategies for all forms of diabetes. Methods We utilized a team-based learning (TBL) approach to create four modules on different types of diabetes: type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, neonatal diabetes, and maturity-onset diabetes of the young. We divided our fellows (all training years, n = 11) into two teams and delivered four separate, 90-minute sessions. To emphasize the application of knowledge, we modified the format to combine the readiness assurance test (RAT) with application problem (APP) questions. The combined RAT/APP questions were answered by individuals and teams. We analyzed scores from individual and team tests and evaluated each module. Additionally, we acquired subjective data from the fellows regarding their experiences. Results Teams outperformed individuals on the tests, as expected (94% vs. 76% correct questions, respectively). All the fellows agreed that the sessions should be included permanently. Additionally, all agreed the sessions helped them apply knowledge. Subjectively, the fellows were very engaged and lively during the sessions and felt the sessions were feasible as implemented. Discussion TBL can be a valuable educational strategy to increase the application of knowledge for diabetes in pediatric endocrinology fellows. Future studies examining the use of this strategy to increase critical thinking skills and knowledge retention in the long-term would be useful.

Introduction Suicide is a global health problem that health care providers must feel comfortable addressing. Unfortunately, many health care providers are not equipped to assess and treat patients at risk for suicide due to lack of training and education. Interactive resources are needed to educate health professions students about the management of suicidal patients. Methods The suicide assessment and management team-based learning (TBL) module was developed to address the gap in suicide education. After completing the module, students were able to identify key elements for a comprehensive assessment of a patient's risk for suicide and to discuss clinical management for a suicidal patient. The activity was designed for second-year medical students during a psychopathology course, the last organ-system course prior to clerkships. This module could also be used or modified to meet the educational requirements for other health professions, including medical residents, nurse practitioner students, and physician assistant students. Results A total of 342 students among 62 teams participated in the TBL over a period of 3 consecutive years. The class averages for the individual Readiness Assurance Test ranged from 80% to 88%. The class averages for the team Readiness Assurance Test and application questions were comparable across all 3 years. Course evaluations showed the TBL helped students think critically and integrate information to prepare them for their future careers. Discussion Overall, this TBL was an effective educational tool that stimulated high-quality discussion, in which students remained engaged and asked thought-provoking questions.

Neste trabalho expomos os resultados de uma pesquisa desenvolvida em três turmas do 1º ano do Ensino Médio Integrado do Instituto Federal do Rio Grande do Norte – Campus Mossoró. A pesquisa objetivava comparar a eficiência de dois métodos ativos bastante difundidos. Em duas das turmas, o professor atuou com a metodologia Team-Based Learning. Na outra, aplicou a metodologia Peer-Instruction. Antes de desenvolver a proposta em sala de aula, o professor aplicou um pré-teste nas três turmas, onde evidenciou que as três estavam em ní­veis equivalentes com relação ao conteúdo que seria trabalhado (Energia e sua Conservação). Procedeu-se então com o desenvolvimento do trabalho nas salas de aula, durante duas semanas e, posteriormente, aplicou-se um pós-teste. Os resultados evidenciam que, em ambas as turmas, o ganho de Hake foi abaixo do reportado para ambas as metodologias na literatura. Mas em uma comparação interna, a metodologia Peer-Instruction gerou um melhor resultado.

Introduction Team-based learning (TBL) is an active learning strategy used at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in both the preclinical and clinical years of medical school. The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology (OB/GYN) uses TBLs during a 6-week clinical clerkship. This TBL is the first in a series of six and was designed to teach the topic of normal obstetrics to third-year medical students. Methods Prior to the TBL, students were provided with learning objectives and a list of advance preparation resources. These resources included a reading assignment from the student textbook, as well as optional online videos and optional online interactive quizzes. The students then came to class and completed an individual readiness assurance test (iRAT) and a group readiness assurance test (gRAT). The majority of in-class time was spent working through complex application exercises in the form of case vignettes. The TBLs were facilitated by a faculty member in the OB/GYN department. Results Since its initiation in June 2018, 93 students have participated in this TBL activity. The mean score on the iRAT was 88.9%, and the mean score on the gRAT was 98.8%. Ninety-eight percent of students reported that they were satisfied with this learning activity. Discussion This TBL was well received by students and unique in that it utilized a variety of types of advance preparation resources. With few other published OB/GYN TBLs available, we believe that this module could be a valuable resource for OB/GYN clerkships.

Background: The effect of new teaching method on study skill of students results in a significant improvement in learning performances. The aim of study was to determine the effect of Team-Based Learning on study habits of nursing students. Methods: The quasi-experimental study with a before-and-after design was conducted on nursing students of Golestan University of Medical Sciences in 2015. 101 students participated in this study through census sampling considering the inclusion criteria. The data was collected using Palsane and Sharma Study Habits Inventory (PSSHI) before and after intervention. The intervention was 16 sessions (a two-hour session per week) Team-based learning. The data was analyzed in SPSS-20 software using paired t-test. Results: Finding showed that most of the students were female (60.3%), and single (95%) with mean age of 21.47±1.5 years. When students were stratified into four groups based on the quartiles of the distribution of study habit, the number of students who had poor study habit decrease after intervention (%5.6) and the number of students with excellent study habit increase after intervention (%3.8). In addition, the mean and standard deviation scores of students' study habits of before and after the intervention were 42.53±7.46 and 48.75±8.94, respectively, which was significantly different (P

Studies which compare perceptions of students and faculty on team-based design elements are lacking in the literature. Understanding perception helps identify areas where agreement exists and explanation is needed. Q Methodology was used to compare student perceptions from Opatmy-Yazell and Houseworth (2018) to faculty perceptions on 29 team-based design elements. Participants indicated whether or not they were perceived as important to good team experiences in the classroom. This research identifies students and faculty viewpoints. Tenets of collaborative learning, along with three, evidence-based instructional practices, team-based learning (TBL); problem-based learning (PBL); and cooperative learning, emerged as important within the resultant viewpoints. Contribution: This paper introduces the real-world limitations and non-technical aspects of power electronics (PEs) projects to students through innovative tutorial activities. Background: Many electrical engineering curricula offer a PE courses (PECs) for third- or fourth-year undergraduate students. Prior research on PEs education mainly focused on improving students’ experimental skills through developing practical experiments, laboratory activities, and problem/project-based learning. An instructional approach that instead employs real-world knowledge and skills is worth evaluating. Intended Outcomes: Students should be able to consider real-world technical and non-technical limitations when applying theory to design PE circuits and converters, and be able to select and carry out appropriate tests to troubleshoot circuits. Application Design: Prior research on engineering education emphasized the importance of introducing real-world limitations to the students as part of their curriculum. This paper suggests that the tutorial activities presented in a PEC can help students acquire skills in designing and troubleshooting a circuit or system according to desired technical aspects, real-world limitations, and available data. Findings: Evidence of the validity of this approach in a PEC at two Australian universities, over four academic years, is provided. Students receiving the new tutorial activities had percentage scores some 10–15 points higher than those who had traditional tutorials. Background: Medical education has been reliant on didactic lectures, which are predominantly teacher-centered learning. Competency-based education was introduced in North America and with this came a paradigm shift in how schools conceptualize curricula and measure learning outcomes. This modern approach started a change away from traditional lecture-based and teacher-centered curricula to a more student-centric approach using various tools. Competency based education is widely regarded as an outcome-based approach to design, implement and evaluate the curriculum using widely accepted competencies. Authorities recommend seven core competencies which have various indicators to address student performance. The main purpose of this research is to utilize active learning tools to enhance this approach and then assess competencies in the first year of medical school to improve academic outcomes as well as exposing students to competency domains on which they will be assessed and to ultimately create a complete physician. Methods: The study was conducted at a medical school during the first semester of medical school and included 145 students. Various active learning tools, such as modified case-based learning, quizzes, and case discussions, were used to assess competency in a biochemistry and genetics course, and these were compared to questions based on concepts delivered by the traditional lecture method. Results: Student performance on high-stakes examinations after active learning sessions on content and concepts had statistically higher average percentages on the second, third and fourth examinations. The average Diff (p) for the second, third, and fourth examination to the questions being considered for the study were (Diff p= 0.84, 0.83, and 0.92) with a positive moderate correlation for the second examination (r= 0.535) and strong positive correlation for the third and fourth examination (r=0.745 and r=0.856) for their final biochemistry grades. Conclusion: The study shows some positive and significant results that active learning methods are a useful and meaningful way to deliver a curriculum for a competency-based education system, and may be better suited than traditional lectures for providing content and assessing competencies which are necessary to become a complete physician.

Research in the health sciences devotes much attention to overweight and obesity and, consequently, to body composition. In recent years, traditional body measures have been questioned as efficient variables in health sciences due to the fact that they cannot give information about body fat mass. Our aim is to teach how to analyze body composition through anthropometry and bioelectrical impedance analysis to our “Physiology of Vegetative and Reproductive Functions” students, who are studying for their degree in Biology. We proposed project-oriented-learning to promote collaborative interactions among students. Fifty-two students voluntarily formed five groups; they worked with the concepts of basal metabolic rate and body composition from a theoretical point of view and later transformed these concepts into a practical perspective by preparing a manuscript in groups with objectives proposed by our teaching team. In this research, we show a collaborative educational scenario for university students in which students are tutored from a constructivist perspective to promote social interactions, resulting in new knowledge acquisition. Abstract Purpose Enrichment of school counselors' knowledge would be an effective way to promote sexual and reproductive health (SRH) among adolescents. The present study aims to assess the effect of educational intervention on knowledge and self-efficacy of high school counselors on teenage SRH. Methods A randomized controlled trial was conducted between June 2016 and March 2017. One hundred and twelve high school counselors from Tehran were recruited and randomized into two groups. The intervention was comprised of training courses on adolescent SRH as per two educational approaches: the team-based learning (TBL) and lecturing, which consisted of four sessions of 2 hours in 2 weeks. The knowledge and feeling of self-efficacy in both groups were assessed at the beginning of the study and 8 weeks after the intervention by researcher-made questionnaires. Results After intervention, the mean and standard deviation of the knowledge and self-efficacy scores increased significantly in both TBL and lecture groups (p <.001). However, the final mean (standard deviation) of counselors' knowledge and self-efficacy scores in the TBL group were significantly higher than that of those in the lecture group [20.06 (2.74) vs. 18.90 (2.95); p =.03 for knowledge and 43.01 (4.08) versus 41.15 (4.99); p =.03 for self-efficacy] with an almost moderate effect size d =.55 for both outcomes. Conclusions The better SRH knowledge and self-efficacy in TBL group can be indicative of the group's effect on making challenges, especially in subjects that are socio-religious by nature. It seems that applying learner-centered educational approaches such as TBL can facilitate achieving pre-assigned SRH goals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Team-based learning (TBL) is an educational strategy based on learning teams. Despite the advantages identified in the TBL literature, student perceptions must be better investigated using valid, reliable instruments. This study constructed and validated an instrument to evaluate student perceptions of the TBL method. Content and appearance assessment, construct validation and reliability analysis were performed. A total of 246 undergraduate nursing and medical students from a private institution in São Paulo, Brazil, participated in the study. After content validation, the instrument had 24 items distributed in five dimensions. Based on exploratory factor analysis, the instrument was appropriate, and the items were regrouped in four dimensions, with Cronbach's alpha values over 0.70. The Student Perception Evaluation of the TBL method (Avaliação da Percepção do Aluno-Team-Based Learning - APA-TBL) is an instrument with strong validity indicators. After validation, the revised instrument reflected that the student's perspective of method evaluation is not focused on TBL's formal execution but on the involved agents, their interaction and their influence on one another.
