In view of supporting the study of the complex domain of equine obstetrics, a FoalinMare multimedia package with 3D designs has been developed. The present study centers on questions as to the most optimal implementation of the multimedia package in veterinary education. In a pretest-posttest cross-over design, students were randomly assigned to one of four conditions. Experimental conditions varied – next to a traditional lecture based introduction to equine obstetrics – from independent exploration of the FoalinMare DVD, to independent guided DVD usage, to guided classroom usage of the DVD. As dependent measures, student mastery of knowledge and skills, cognitive load and self-efficacy were measured. Results point at the significant superior impact of studying with the FoalinMare DVD on skills acquisition and higher levels of self-efficacy. In addition, experimental conditions that build on guided usage of the multimedia application, result in superior performance. Building on the cross-over design, the guided classroom usage boosts in a significant way the knowledge acquisition in the subsequent learning phase in the control condition. This study examined if babies (6-24 months; n = 60) learn words from a DVD modeled on Baby Einstein™. The study was novel in that it utilized an infant-directed DVD, but was edited to include low-frequency words (e.g., medallion) and it utilized the preferential looking method in the posttest so that very young babies could be tested. Results suggested that babies could learn the novel words in the live condition; however, they did not appear to learn them in the video condition. Furthermore, there was no age effect in the video condition. Finally, there was no relationship between visual attention to the video and learning from it. Based on the assumption that commercial screen media offers no advantages to children under 2, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends no exposure for them. However, few experimental tests of this assumption have been conducted. Utilizing a randomized controlled design, we examined vocabulary development in children ages 8 to 15 months. Experimental group infants were exposed to Baby Einstein's Baby Wordsworth DVD for 1 month, with vocabulary assessed at baseline, and at 1 and 3 months after viewing. Results indicated that the experimental group showed greater gains in receptive (understood) words on the CDI (β = .10, p < .01) and on DVD specific words (β = .11, p < .01), compared to controls, who were not exposed to the video. There were no differences between the groups in expressive (spoken) vocabulary. Results are discussed in the context of current and ongoing research on infant and toddler word learning from video. Expanded captions are designed to enhance the educational value by linking unfamiliar words to one of three types of information: vocabulary definitions, labeled illustrations, or concept maps. This study investigated the effects of expanded captions versus standard captions on the comprehension of educational video materials on DVD by secondary students who are deaf or hard of hearing. Participants were assigned randomly to two groups, with each group experiencing both conditions in counterbalanced order. Scores from pretests and posttests of vocabulary and informational content revealed no statistically significant differences between the two conditions. The findings are discussed in light of student preferences for expanded captions and screen-capture data that revealed low access levels for the expanded material. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
