The article focuses on aging of 154 kilovolt (kV) underground power cable insulation under combined thermal and electrical stresses. Ribbons of silane-cured cross linked polyethylene (XLPE) 20 millimeters (mm) wide and 60 to 100 micrometer thick were cut from a commercially available 154 kV transmission cable. The XLPE ribbons were thermally aged at temperatures between 20 degree Celsius and 90 degree Celsius and electrically stressed at 50 kV/mm to 130 kV/mm. The aging tests were performed with the specimens placed between parallel-plane electrodes and immersed in mineral oil. The electrical aging supported a direct relationship between the square of the electrical field and log time. Chemical analysis showed that oxidation had occurred in the thermally aged specimens.
