Demands that electric power apparatus, and other types of industrial and domestic apparatus, be light and of low cost have been increasing recently. For electric power equipment such as bushings, simple structures with short assembly times are also demanded. Since conventional bushings are made of porcelain and contain oil for internal electrical insulation, they are very heavy, do not withstand earthquakes well, and pose risks of environmental pollution if broken. As described in News from Japan in the January/February 2013 issue [1], polymer-housed electric apparatus showed much better antiseismic performance than porcelain-housed apparatus in two big earthquakes that hit Japan in July 2007 and in March 2011. Consequently, demands from Japanese power utility companies for bushings with strong seismic resistance have increased sharply. In response, SWCC Showa Cable Systems Co. The article focuses on the new High Voltage Electrical Insulation Testing Laboratory of Central Research Institute of Electric Power Industry (CRIEPI), which was opened on July 2008 at its Yokosuka site in Japan. The article discusses the development of two halogen-free flame-retardant insulating materials for cables in Tokyo, Japan. The first resistant-cable, which was developed in cooperation with the Japan Atomic Energy Agency, was polyolefin resin. It has been added with several kinds of radiation-resistant stabilizers or visible-to-ultraviolet light absorbers. The second radiation-resistant cable was polyether-etherketone (PEEK) which was developed with IHI Corp. and Japan Atomic Energy Agency. PEEK can address the hardening or cracking of the cable constituent materials under high-level radiation.

The article reports on the new method that predicts the degree of degradation of insulators in power distribution equipment developed by Mitsubishi Electric Corporation from Tokyo, Japan. Schematic of the diagnostic method for calculating the remaining service life shows the estimate is given by the point at which the straight line joining the surface resistivity values for new and used insulators intersects the minimum surface resistivity required for the initiation of electrical discharges. A table showing some predictions of remaining service life for phenol resin insulators is presented.

The article reports on the development of radiation-resistant, single-mode optical fibers for the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) Large Handron Collider (LHC) by Fujikura Ltd. Because of the increasing demand for optical fibers with a large transmission capacity and improved radiation-resistant characteristic essential in high physics research facilities, Fujikura Ltd. in Tokyo, Japan, decided to carry out a research and development of radiation-resistant, single-mode optical fibers. It mentions that Fujikura Ltd. has succeeded and it has supplied the new radiation-resistant optical fibers to the LHC facility in the CERN. Figures showing diagrams of experimental system as well as the time response curves of radiation-induced loss are also presented.

Information about several papers discussed at the meeting of IEC Working Groups (WGs) and Maintenance Team (MT) in the Japan Electrical Manufacturers' Association (JEMA) headquarters in Tokyo, Japan in April 16-20, 2007 is presented. The article details the development of a high-performance epoxy compound for a vacuum interrupter consisting of ceramic tubes. Solid-insulated switchgears (SIS), an alternative option for gas-insulated switchgear (GIS), requires a high-performance epoxy compound because it is said that the conventional compounds could not withstand internal stresses. One of the characteristics of high-performance epoxy insulation is low viscosity.

The article focuses on the study conducted by T. Nakiri and Y. Tajitsu on the development of electric wire using biodegradable polymer in Japan. The researchers fabricated a prototype electric cable with a copper conductor and the selected poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA)-based copolymer insulation. Although the two cables are very similar in appearance, the dielectric breakdown strength of the PLLA-insulated cable is 3.5 times higher than that of the VVF cable. Furthermore, the PLLA-insulatd cable can be bent smoothly and does not crack or whiten even after repeated bending tests.
