For the grid-connected inverter, grid voltage sag can be a typical phenomenon. From the prospective of safe and robust operation, the inverter should be stable when the grid voltage sag (or large disturbance) occurs. Although the inverter stability in this case has attracted considerable attentions, few studies have given suggestions on the system stability boundary and parameter design. To fill this gap, this article deeply discusses the large-signal stability of the system under different situations and reveals the quantified impact of the phase-locked loop (PLL) on the large-signal stability of the system based on the fundamental current-source model. The large-signal stability criterion and boundaries for grid voltage sags are established, which are instructive to the design of PLL parameters. Besides, a novel design guideline for the PLL parameters is proposed to ensure the robust operation of the system both under the steady-state and grid voltage sags, as well as to achieve good dynamic performance after large disturbance occurs. The theoretical, simulation, and experimental results show that the proposed stability boundary has certain accuracy and the PLL parameters design guideline can ensure the system stability both under steady-state and grid voltage sag conditions. In the LCL-filtered grid-tied inverter, the classical low-cost control strategy which is composed of the single converter-side current control and the unit grid voltage feedforward compensation, is commonly employed to inject the sinusoidal current into the utility. However, the inverter output admittance features the non-passive behaviour, which indicates that the harmonic currents may be amplified under the disturbances of the grid voltage and the grid impedance. Therefore, two dedicated current loops based on only the converter-side current feedback are proposed, which consist of the low-pass filter-based current regulation and the high-pass filter-based active damping (HFAD). The mixed asymmetrical regular sampling method is further used to reduce the control delay of the HFAD. Moreover, the low-pass filter-based feedforward is developed to make a compromise between the disturbance rejection and the stability. Fair comparisons with other typical control strategies are made through analysing the virtual resistor in parallel with the filter capacitor, which reveals that the positive virtual resistance at the frequency lower than half of the switching frequency is maintained. With the elaborated control parameters, the exhaustive experimental results finally verify the effectiveness of the proposed method in passivating the inverter output admittance. The output impedance model for the precise stability analysis on the single-phase grid-tied inverters considering the frequency-coupling effect of the phase-locked loop (PLL) is studied. A multifrequency admittance matrix (MAM) is developed to predict the inverter-grid system stability by applying the generalized Nyquist criterion. Based on the MAM, a novel output impedance model characterized by clear physical meaning is proposed, which reveals that the inverter output impedance $(Z_{op}|_{(Z\text{pcc}, {Im})})$ varies along with the grid impedance $Z_{{\text{pcc}}}$ and the current reference $I_{m}$. The resonance and the stability problems can be identified by applying the impedance-based stability criterion to the impedance ratio $Z_{op}| _{(Z\text{pcc},\,{Im})}/ Z_{\text{pcc}}$. The proposed impedance model is further extended to the n-parallel inverter system. It is found that the output impedances of two n-parallel homogeneous-inverter systems are identical if the number n and the total injected current itot are the same, and the system stability is indicated by the impedance ratio $\frac{1}{\boldsymbol{n}}$ $Z_{op}| _{(n\cdot Z{\text{pcc}},\,{I}{{\rm{avg)}}}}/ Z_{{\text{pcc}}}$ , where $Z_{op}| _{(n\cdot Z{\text{pcc}},\,{I{\text{avg)}}}}$ is the output impedance of one special inverter with the average current itot/n injected to the grid with $n\cdot Z_{{\text{pcc}}}$. Further on, the design procedure of the PLL bandwidth $f_{b}$ is elaborated, which guides the selection of $f_{b}$ with the anticipated phase margin. Compared to the conventional impedance model, the developed output impedance is more qualified to precisely identify the harmonic stability problem in the weak grid. The selection of $f_{b}$ and the correctness of the proposed impedance model are experimentally verified by the measured output impedance and the waveforms of the elaborated cases. For the grid-connected LCL-filtered inverter, the grid current feedback active damping (AD) can assure a desirable bandwidth and a good robustness against certain parameter variations by using a minimal number of sensors. However, the inverter performance was seriously endangered by nonideal conditions at the point of common coupling (PCC), including background voltage distortions and grid impedance variation. The grid current AD could not work well for wide grid impedance variation. Hence, in this study, the robustness with such control is discussed and its relations with system parameters are derived through mathematic derivations. It is proved that, for the typical grid current AD control, a contradiction between high bandwidth and high robustness exists. On the basis of analyzing the reasons for the limitations of the typical control, a systematic approach for enhancing the robustness under complex grid conditions has been proposed. The proposed fundamental PCC voltage feedforward enhances the robustness, while the proposed phase shaping compensator assures a higher robustness with a desired bandwidth. The performance of the grid-connected inverter was affected by the uncertainty of the grid conditions including the background distortion and the grid impedance. Typically, the feedforward of the grid voltage at the point of common coupling (PCC) highly suppressed the grid current harmonics caused by the grid voltage distortion; however, the PCC grid usually had a nonnegligible grid impedance, and the PCC voltage feedforward aroused serious grid current harmonics or instability. This study proposes a novel adaptive algorithm for the PCC voltage feedforward to work well with the varied grid impedance. In the proposal, the band-pass filters at the harmonic frequencies are used to detect the variation of the grid impedance as well as to facilitate the adaptive PCC voltage feedforward. It is not necessary to inject an additional harmonic to estimate the grid impedance. The basic principles as well as the realization and logic of the proposed algorithm are detailed, and some selected waveforms are provided to verify the superior performance. Compared with the typical robust design or adaptive control, the proposed algorithm does not have to sacrifice the dynamic or the harmonics rejection performance, or to use the on or offline grid impedance estimation. In this paper, the inverter output impedance is passivized for solving the harmonic and the stability problems in the multiparallel inverters. The harmonics are easily aroused because of the disturbances, and the system stability is challenged by the grid impedance. Based on the simplified equivalent impedance model, the two problems are analyzed in the low-frequency (LF) band and the high-frequency (HF) band, respectively. Aiming at improving the LF performance, the weighted-proportional grid voltage feedforward and the harmonic quasi-resonant controller with phase compensation are proposed. The dynamic performance is enhanced with an additional current reference generation scheme. In order to improve the HF performance, a novel digital phase lead filter which brings the system back to a minimum-phase case is proposed. By the proposed control method, the high modulus of each inverter output impedance Zo is guaranteed, while the phase angles of Zo over the entire frequency band are avoided to be lower than −90°.
