Low-speed drive is one of the challenges for modular multilevel converters (MMCs) due to large capacitor voltage fluctuation. In this article, a cascaded MMC and cycloconverter (CCV) based machine drive system is proposed to ensure stable operation of medium-voltage and low-speed machine. The MMC provides medium-frequency ac voltage for the CCV, and the CCV converts the medium-frequency ac input to low-frequency ac output required by the machine. Detailed analysis about MMC's operation frequency, device current stress, and submodule (SM) capacitance are given in this article. Proposed drive system can operate at zero/low frequency under rated load torque, while the SM capacitance is much smaller than that in existing methods. In this article, a model predictive control (MPC) strategy based on the optimal switching sequence (OSS) concept for a single-phase grid-connected H-bridge neutral-point-clamped (H-NPC) power converter is presented. The proposed OSS-MPC algorithm considers both the grid current tracking error and the dc-link capacitor voltage balance. Special emphasis is placed on the power converter control region in order to design suitable switching sequence candidates for this multiobjective control problem. Additionally, based on an analysis of the weighting factor effect over closed-loop performance, it is possible to demonstrate that this controller parameter is relatively easy to adjust. In fact, the weighting factor only affects the peak current during transients, with no effect over the steady-state performance. As a result, the proposed OSS-MPC provides a fast closed-loop dynamic to the H-NPC converter, which operates with a fixed switching frequency at all times. This article proposes a closed-loop analytic filtering scheme for the low-frequency capacitor voltage ripple in cascaded H-bridge converters. Although this technique can be applied to a number of cascaded converter applications, this article focuses particularly on the low-capacitance cascaded H-bridge static compensator. Filtering of capacitor voltage signals is particularly important in this application, due to the presence of large low-frequency harmonic voltage ripple. The main novelty of the proposed algorithm in this article is the estimation of the capacitance value of each H-bridge. The closed-loop capacitance estimation method reduces steady-state error in estimated voltage ripple magnitude and phase, which is otherwise present in the available open-loop filters in the literature. Furthermore, fast dynamic response is achieved compared to filtering schemes based on low-pass and bandstop filters. Therefore, the proposed solution optimizes the tradeoff between filtering accuracy and transient response. It also mitigates parametric uncertainties, time delays, and harmonic contamination in the outer voltage control loop. Furthermore, the estimated capacitance is also useful to track the state of health of the dc-link capacitors. Experimental results on a seven-level 1-kVA cascaded H-bridge prototype are presented to demonstrate the comparative performance of the proposed filtering scheme and traditional approaches. A new approach to the control of three-phase two-level grid-connected power converters is proposed in this paper. The proposed control is an extended state observer (ESO)-based second order sliding mode (SOSM), which comprises two control loops: the outer loop is a voltage regulation loop, as well as inner loop is an instantaneous power tracking loop. The outer loop is accomplished by an ${H}_{\infty }$ controller plus an ESO, which is designed to regulate dc-link capacitor voltage of the converter and asymptotically reject external disturbances and parameter perturbations. The SOSM strategy is employed in the inner loop to drive the active and reactive power convergence to their desired values. Control objectives of nearly unity power factor and dc-link capacitor voltage regulation are simultaneously satisfied. Availability of the ESO-based SOSM is compared with the classic proportional-integral control in simulations, and the comparison implies that the proposed strategy not merely achieves an almost perfect tracking performance, but also provides a complete robustness against resistance load variation. In the last decades, multilevel converters have been developed usually for medium-voltage high-power applications. They have become a mature solution for the increasing power demand of multiple applications such as renewable energy systems, power quality improvement, and motor drives. In this paper, the operation of multilevel converters is addressed focusing on control and modulation techniques for different well-known applications. This paper presents a new synchronization scheme for detecting multiple positive-/negative-sequence frequency harmonics in three-phase systems for grid-connected power converters. The proposed technique is called MAVF-FLL because it is based on the use of multiple adaptive vectorial filters (AVFs) working together inside a harmonic decoupling network, resting on a frequency-locked loop (FLL) which makes the system frequency adaptive. The method uses the vectorial properties of the three-phase input signal in the \alpha \beta reference frame in order to obtain the different harmonic components. The MAVF-FLL is fully designed and analyzed, addressing the tuning procedure in order to obtain the desired and predefined performance. The proposed algorithm is evaluated by both simulation and experimental results, demonstrating its ability to perform as required for detecting different harmonic components under a highly unbalanced and distorted input grid voltage. Multilevel cascaded H-bridge converters have found industrial application in the medium-voltage high-power range. In this paper, a generalized modulation technique for this type of converter based on a multidimensional control region is presented. Using the multidimensional control region, it is shown that all previous modulation techniques are particularized versions of the proposed method. Several possible solutions to develop a specific implementation of the modulation method are addressed in order to show the potential possibilities and the flexibility of the proposed technique. In addition, a feedforward version of this technique is also introduced to determine the switching sequence and the switching times, avoiding low harmonic distortion with unbalanced dc voltages. Multilevel cascaded H-bridge (CHB) converters have been presented as a good solution for high-power applications. In this way, several control and modulation techniques have been proposed for this power converter topology. In this paper, the steady-state power balance in the cells of a single-phase two-cell CHB is studied. The capability to be supplied with active power from the grid or to deliver active power to the grid in each cell is analyzed according to the dc-link voltages and the desired ac output voltage value. The use of an inverter with an output LC filter allows for generation of output sinusoidal voltages with low harmonic distortion, suitable for uninterruptible power supply systems. However, the controller design becomes more difficult. This paper presents a new and simple control scheme using predictive control for a two-level converter. The controller uses the model of the system to predict, on each sampling interval, the behavior of the output voltage for each possible switching state. Then, a cost function is used as a criterion for selecting the switching state that will be applied during the next sampling interval. In addition, an observer is used for load-current estimation, enhancing the behavior of the proposed controller without increasing the number of current sensors. Experimental results under linear and nonlinear load conditions, with a 5.5-kW prototype, are presented, verifying the feasibility and good performance of the proposed control scheme. Single-phase power converters are widely used in power applications as photovoltaics and fuel-cell power conditioners. In addition, multilevel converters are a well-known solution in order to achieve high-quality output waveforms in power systems. In this paper, a time-domain duty-cycle computation technique for single-phase multilevel converters named IDM is presented. The proposed technique is based on geometrical calculations with outstanding simplicity and generality. The proposed modulation technique can be easily applied to any multilevel converter topology carrying out the necessary calculations. The most common multilevel converter topologies have been studied in this paper as examples to introduce the proposed modulation strategy. Any other multilevel converter topology could be studied, and the corresponding IDM could be easily developed. In addition, the well-known optimized voltage balance strategy for voltage capacitor control using the redundant switching states of the system is applied working with the proposed IDM method, showing that both techniques are compatible. Acting as an interface between the grid and many energy systems, the active front-end (AFE) has been widely used in a large variety of industrial applications. In this paper, in order to ensure the fast dynamic performance and good disturbance rejection ability of the AFE, a high-gain observer (HGO) plus adaptive super-twisting algorithm (STA) for the three-level neutral-point-clamped (NPC) converter is proposed. Comparing with the conventional PI control strategy, the proposed controller implements the adaptive STA in the voltage regulator to provide a faster transient response. The gains of the adaptive STA keep varying according to the rules being reduced in steady state but increasing in transient conditions. Therefore, the chattering phenomenon is mitigated and the dynamic response is guaranteed. Additionally, to undermine the impact of external disturbances on the dc-link voltage, a high-efficiency HGO is designed in the voltage regulation loop to reject it. Experimental results based on a three-level NPC prototype are given and compared with the conventional PI method to validate the fast dynamic performance and high disturbance rejection ability of the proposed approach.
