Since early 2012, the cross-track infrared sounder (CrIS) on board the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (S-NPP) satellite has continually provided the hyperspectral infrared observations for profiling atmospheric temperature, moisture, and greenhouse gases. In this study, the CrIS sensor data record (SDR) data are improved for climate applications with its fine-tuning of calibration coefficients in an NOAA reprocessing project. A specific software system was developed to reprocess the CrIS SDR. This software system was updated with a new calibration algorithm, nonlinearity, and geolocation to improve the SDR data quality and long-term consistency. The calibration coefficients are refined with the latest updates, which were used to calibrate the latest operational SDR products and replace those in the engineering packet (EP) in the raw data record (RDR) data stream. The resampling wavelength was updated based on the metrology laser wavelength and resulted in zero sampling error in the spectral calibration. All the historical SDRs (from February 2012 to March 2017) were generated with the same calibration coefficients and same version of the processing software system, resulting in improved accuracy and stability in terms of spectral and radiometric calibration during the CrIS lifetime mission. The quality of the reprocessed CrIS SDR data at nominal spectral resolution (NSR) is assessed in terms of its radiometric and spectral calibration. Comparisons against the operational SDR data are carried out to demonstrate the improved long-term stability of the reprocessed CrIS SDR data. Overall radiometric biases are found to be small and highly stable over the instrument mission, the FOV-to-FOV differences are less than ~10 mK, and much better than that from the operational SDR data. It is shown that the CrIS metrology laser wavelength varies within 4 ppm as measured by the neon calibration system. The reprocessed SDR data have spectral errors less than 0.5 ppm, which is much better than the operational SDR data with about 4 ppm. This baseline version of the reprocessed SNPP CrIS SDR data is suitable for long-term climate monitoring and model assessments and can provide an infrared reference observation to assess other narrow- or broadband infrared instruments' calibration accuracy.

As one of the calibration reference targets used to calibrate the cross-track infrared sounder (CrIS) earth scene (ES) measurements, the stable deep space (DS) reference spectrum in the 30-scan DS calibration moving window is very important for the accuracy of the calibrated ES radiances. The DS view changes when the lunar radiation intrudes into the observation field of view (FOV). In the original CrIS lunar intrusion (LI) detection algorithm implemented in the operational ground processing system, the contaminated DS spectra were not effectively removed from the DS moving window due to large threshold values and the assumption that the first DS spectrum in the moving window was not contaminated. As a result, inaccurate, degraded, or invalid ES radiances were produced in the operational CrIS sensor data record (SDR) during LI events. In this article, an improved LI detection algorithm is developed and implemented into the operational system. First, the new algorithm efficiently finds a contamination-free DS spectrum in the DS 30-scan calibration moving window to use as the reference spectrum. Second, based on the phase characteristics of the complex raw DS spectra during LI events, the LI band-dependent thresholds were derived to effectively reject the contaminated DS spectra and to make the valid DS window size consistent among the three CrIS bands. The new LI algorithm implemented in the operational system shows a successful detection and removal of all the lunar-contaminated DS spectra in the DS moving window, resulting in an improved calibration of ES radiances during LI events.

Atmospheric soundings from radiosondes are critical for the weather forecasting, particularly for the diagnostic of atmospheric stability conditions that can lead to thunderstorm development. However, radiosonde observations (RAOBs) are temporally and spatially limited throughout the globe, promoting the use of satellite measurements. This paper assesses the applicability to the operational short-term weather forecasting of atmospheric stability indices and parameters (SIPs) derived from thermodynamic profiles retrieved from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Unique Combined Atmospheric Processing System (NUCAPS) using the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (SNPP) Cross-track Infrared Sounder (CrIS) and Advanced Technology Microwave Sounder (ATMS) radiances. For this purpose, we validated NUCAPS SIPs against SIPs derived from conventional and dedicated/reference RAOBs collocated with NUCAPS retrievals within a maximum radius of 50 km and ±1-h time difference, over midlatitudes (60°N–30°N) and tropics (30°N–30°S). Stability parameters evaluated include total precipitable water (TPW), lifted index, K-index, total-totals index, and Galvez–Davison index. NUCAPS TPW exhibited the highest level of statistical agreement with RAOBs, with the remaining NUCAPS SIPs exhibiting favorable results (linear correlations ranging between 0.65 and 0.85). Case studies over the Texas/Oklahoma region and the Northern Coast of Brazil demonstrate NUCAPS capability of generating reliable fields of atmospheric stability, as well as capturing synoptic-scale convective signatures, not feasible with RAOBs. Considering also the benefit of SNPP NUCAPS hyperspectral-infrared (IR) and microwave soundings available for both regions during critical early afternoon periods, our analysis supports the use of NUCAPS CrIS/ATMS SIPs as complementary nowcasting tools for the analysis of preconvective environments.

This paper continues an overview of the validation of operational profile retrievals from the Suomi National Polar-Orbiting Partnership (SNPP), with focus here given to the infrared (IR) ozone profile environmental data record (EDR) product. The SNPP IR ozone profile EDR is retrieved using the cross-track IR sounder (CrIS), a Fourier transform spectrometer that measures high-resolution IR earth radiance spectra containing atmospheric state information, namely, vertical profiles of temperature, moisture, and trace gas constituents. The SNPP CrIS serves as the U.S. low earth orbit (LEO) satellite IR sounding system and will be featured on future Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS) LEO satellites. The operational sounding algorithm is the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration-Unique Combined Atmospheric Processing System (NUCAPS), a legacy sounder science team algorithm that retrieves atmospheric profile EDR products, including ozone and carbon trace gases, with optimal vertical resolution under nonprecipitating (clear to partly cloudy) conditions. The NUCAPS ozone profile product is assessed in this paper using extensive global $in\;situ$ truth data sets, namely, ozonesonde observations launched from ground-based networks and from ocean-based intensive field campaigns, along with numerical weather prediction model output. Based upon rigorous statistical analyses using these data sets, the NUCAPS ozone profile EDRs are determined to meet the JPSS Level 1 global performance requirements.

The SNPP NUCAPS AVTP and AVMP EDR products are validated using extensive global in situ baseline data sets, namely, radiosonde observations launched from ground-based networks and ocean-based intensive field campaigns, along with numerical weather prediction model output. Based upon statistical analyses using these data sets, the SNPP AVTP and AVMP EDRs are determined to meet the JPSS Level 1 global performance requirements.

In this work, an ultra-wideband planar inverted-F antenna is presented, fed by a convex-shaped structure. The antenna shows a measured ultra-wide bandwidth starting at 2.7 GHz and ending at 13 GHz, for a VSWR less than 2. The antenna shows an omnidirectional pattern at the X–Y plane with a very low out-of-roundness all over the bandwidth. The group delay of the antenna is very stable, obtaining a variation less than 1 ns. As a result, very low dispersion over the entire bandwidth is presented, as well as low cross-polarization level.

Spaceborne interferometric synthetic aperture radar (SAR) (InSAR) imaging has been used for over a decade to monitor tectonic movements and landslides, as well as to improve digital elevation models. However, InSAR is affected by variations in round-trip propagation delay due to changes in ionospheric total electron content and in tropospheric humidity and temperature along the signal path. One of the largest sources of uncertainty in estimates of tropospheric path delay is the spatial and temporal variability of water vapor density, which currently limits the quality of InSAR products. This problem can be partially addressed by using a number of SAR interferograms from subsequent satellite overpasses to reduce the degradation in the images or by analyzing a long time series of interferometric phases from permanent scatterers. However, if there is a sudden deformation of the Earth's surface, the detection of which is one of the principal objectives of InSAR measurements over land, the effect of water vapor variations cannot be removed, reducing the quality of the interferometric products. In those cases, high-resolution information on the atmospheric water vapor content and its variation with time can be crucial to mitigate the effect of wet-tropospheric path delay variations. This paper describes the use of a ground-based microwave radiometer network to retrieve 3-D water vapor density with fine spatial and temporal resolution, which can be used to reduce InSAR ambiguities due to changes in wet-tropospheric path delay. Retrieval results and comparisons between the integrated water vapor measured by the radiometer network and satellite data are presented.

A comprehensive system that is used to invert the geophysical products from microwave measurements has recently been developed. This system, known as the Microwave Integrated Retrieval System (MiRS), ensures that the final solution is consistent with the measurements and, when used as input to the forward operator, fits them to within the instrument noise levels. In the presence of precipitation, this variational algorithm retrieves a set of hydrometeor products consisting of cloud liquid water, ice water, and rain water content profiles. This paper presents the development and assessment of the MiRS rainfall rate that is derived based on a predetermined relationship of the rainfall with these hydrometeor products. Since this relationship relies on the geophysical products retrieved by the MiRS as inputs and not on sensor-dependent parameters, the technique is suitable for all microwave sensors to which the MiRS is applied. This precipitation technique has been designed to facilitate its transition from research to operations when applied to current and future satellite-based sensors. Currently, the MiRS rainfall rate technique has been implemented operationally at the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) for the NOAA-18, NOAA-19, Metop-A Advanced Microwave Sounding Unit, and Microwave Humidity Sensor, as well as for the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP)-F16 and DMSP-F18 Special Sensor Microwave Imager/Sounder microwave satellite sensors. For the validation of the MiRS rainfall rate technique, extensive comparisons with state-of-the-art precipitation products derived from rain gauge, ground-based radar, and satellite-based microwave observations are presented for different regions and seasons, and over land and ocean. The MiRS rainfall rate technique is shown to estimate precipitation, with a skill comparable to other satellite-based microwave precipitation algorithms, including the MSPPS, 3B40RT, and MWCOMB, while showing no discontinuities at coasts. This is a relevant result, considering that the MiRS is a system not merely designed to retrieve the rainfall rate but to consistently estimate a comprehensive set of atmospheric and surface parameters from microwave measurements.

A 1-D variational system has been developed to process spaceborne measurements. It is an iterative physical inversion system that finds a consistent geophysical solution to fit all radiometric measurements simultaneously. One of the particularities of the system is its applicability in cloudy and precipitating conditions. Although valid, in principle, for all sensors for which the radiative transfer model applies, it has only been tested for passive microwave sensors to date. The Microwave Integrated Retrieval System (MiRS) inverts the radiative transfer equation by finding radiometrically appropriate profiles of temperature, moisture, liquid cloud, and hydrometeors, as well as the surface emissivity spectrum and skin temperature. The inclusion of the emissivity spectrum in the state vector makes the system applicable globally, with the only differences between land, ocean, sea ice, and snow backgrounds residing in the covariance matrix chosen to spectrally constrain the emissivity. Similarly, the inclusion of the cloud and hydrometeor parameters within the inverted state vector makes the assimilation/inversion of cloudy and rainy radiances possible, and therefore, it provides an all-weather capability to the system. Furthermore, MiRS is highly flexible, and it could be used as a retrieval tool (independent of numerical weather prediction) or as an assimilation system when combined with a forecast field used as a first guess and/or background. In the MiRS, the fundamental products are inverted first and then are interpreted into secondary or derived products such as sea ice concentration, snow water equivalent (based on the retrieved emissivity) rainfall rate, total precipitable water, integrated cloud liquid amount, and ice water path (based on the retrieved atmospheric and hydrometeor products). The MiRS system was implemented operationally at the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in 2007 for the NOAA-18 satellite. Since then, it has been extended to run for NOAA-19, Metop-A, and DMSP-F16 and F18 SSMI/S. This paper gives an overview of the system and presents brief results of the assessment effort for all fundamental and derived products.

A new technique is employed to reduce the size of Yagi-Uda antennas. The technique consists of adding short circuited cylindrical covers to the structure, making the elements be inductively loaded, and as a result, increase the electric length. A prototype resonating at 660 MHz is developed, and compared to a conventional Yagi-Uda antenna. An effective area reduction of 35% is achieved without decreasing, considerably, the gain, preserving the bandwidth, and front to back lobe ratio.

The fabrication of a miniaturized ground-based water vapor profiling radiometer demonstrates the capability of monolithic microwave and millimeter-wave integrated circuit technology to reduce the mass and volume of microwave remote sensing instrumentation and to reduce substantially the necessary operational power consumption and size of the radio-frequency and intermediate-frequency sections. Since those sections comprise much of the mass and volume of current microwave receivers, the fabrication of this system represents an important contribution to the design of microwave radiometers. This miniaturized radiometer implementation is particularly well suited to benefit from the cost savings associated with mass production. The small size of the radiometer (24times18times16 cm) reduces the power required by the temperature control system and allows a rapid warm-up to the temperature set point as well as maintenance of a highly stable internal temperature. Exhibiting very similar statistical properties, the four channels of the radiometer have measured Allan times of greater than 40 s. Measurement results demonstrate that the instrument achieves a sensitivity of better than 0.2 K for 3 s of integration time. Preliminary comparisons of measured brightness temperatures with simulation results based on radiosonde data show good agreement, which are consistent with previously reported results.

In this article, a novel AM-PM conversion model is compared to the classical behavioral quadrature one. The proposed model can be seen as a phase statement of compression and desensitization. These two models are closely related. However, the proposed method does not have the limitations considered in the classical model, which can be seen in the investigation of the AM-PM conversion introduced in a given carrier due to the presence of several signals, as is the case in multicarrier amplifiers. The method allows us to find the design conditions to reduce the AM-PM conversion introduced by nonlinear circuits. To show the dependence of the AM-PM conversion as a function of several input tones and frequency spacing, which is not considered in the classical model, the performance of medium power BJT and GaAsFET operating at 900 and 1900 MHz, is investigated when one, two, and three tones are simultaneously fed at the input. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Five different linearizing methods were implemented to improve the linearity of a low noise amplifier (LNA). Obtaining a very good performance concerning output and input third-order intercept point without significant degradation of the noise figure. Moreover, high 1 dB-gain compression point was succeeded, obtaining a very high linear amplifier operating at 1900 MHz and biased with 2.4 V and 10 mA of collector current.

The present work establishes the use of the defected microstrip structure (DMS) as a novel method of tuning the central frequency of rectangular printed antennas. The error obtained from the predicted operating frequency and the measured one is less than 4%, without degrading the VSWR, radiation pattern, and antenna gain. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A defected microstrip structure (DMS) is proposed to reducing the size of a rectangular patch antenna by increasing its electric length, without degrading its performance. To illustrate this advantage, one conventional and one proposed defected patch antenna were developed and measured at 1.77 GHz. The simulated and measured results concerning the radiation patterns and bandwidth of both antennas are very closely related, but the proposed defected antenna achieves 22% of total-area reduction. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Three simple methods to improve the third-order intercept point (IP3) of a low-noise amplifier (LNA) for personal communication systems (PCS) applications or CDMA cellular handsets are introduced. Both simulations and results from previous works in the literature are compared in order to demonstrate the effectiveness of these methods in improving the performance of the LNA in terms of linearity when low-bias voltage is used. The LNA was designed to operate at 1.9 GHz, using a silicon germanium (SiGe) heterojunction bipolar transistor (HBT) and 2.4 V bias voltage. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Different high-linearity low noise amplifier (LNA) structures have been designed, simulated and compared, providing good performance results concerning noise figure, bandwidth, power gain, intermodulation and gain compression, when a low-level voltage supply is used. The structures were designed to be used in personal communication systems (PCSs), operating at 1900 MHz using a SiGe heterojunction bipolar transistor (HBT) and 2.4 V bias polarisation.
