We present the results of complex obser-vations of various parameters of the middle and upper atmosphere over Siberia in December 2012 – January 2013, during a major sudden stratospheric warming (SSW) event. We analyze variations in ozone concentration from microwave measurements, in stratosphere and lower mesosphere temperatures from lidar and satellite measurements, in the F2-layer critical frequency (foF2), in the total electron content (TEC), as well as in the ratio of concentrations of atomic oxygen to molecular nitrogen (O/N2) in the thermosphere. To interpret the observed disturbances in the upper atmosphere, the experimental measurements are compared with the results of model calculations obtained with the Global Self-consistent Model of Thermosphere—Ionosphere—Protonosphere (GSM TIP). The response of the upper atmosphere to the SSW event is shown to be a decrease in foF2 and TEC during the evolution of the warming event and a prolonged increase in O/N2, foF2, and TEC after the SSW maximum. For the first time, we observe the relation between the increase in stratospheric ozone, thermospheric O/N2, and ionospheric electron density for a fairly long time (up to 20 days) after the SSW maximum at midlatitudes.

Abstract This study presents an analysis of geomagnetic disturbances and ionospheric electron density distribution during the 2015 St. Patrick's Day geomagnetic storm. To study those we have used the satellite-borne and ground-based observations. The St. Patrick's geomagnetic storm covers the interval of 15–23 March 2015, when solar eruptive phenomena (a long-enduring C9-class solar flare and associated CME's on 15 March) and a strong geomagnetic storm on 16–18 March (Dst dropped as strong as –228 nT) were reported. This geomagnetic storm is still the strongest one observed in the current solar cycle. The severe geomagnetic storm on 17-18 March 2015 led to complex effects on the ionosphere. We consider major features of the positive and negative ionospheric storms development at European mid- and high-latitudes. One of the interesting phenomena was observation of the positive ionospheric disturbances during the recovery phase. Using the Global Self-consistent Model of the Thermosphere, Ionosphere and Protonosphere (GSM TIP) we examined the main physical processes that played a major role in dramatic changes of the total electron content and the F 2 layer peak electron density during this storm event. Highlights • All types of the ionospheric disturbances are very well reproduced by GSM TIP model for the 2015 St. Patrick's Day storm. • The prompt penetration electric field dominates in producing of the positive ionospheric storm only at the storm beginning, and equatorward neutral wind dominates during several hours after that. • We conclude that the neutral composition changes play the most important role in the daytime electron density increase at different latitudes during the recovery storm phase. Simultaneous in-situ measurements of electron density and temperature in the nighttime equatorial region were performed by a rocket experiment launched under solar minimum and geomagnetic quiet conditions from the station of Alcântara (2.24°S; 44.24°W), Brazil, on Dec. 18, 1995, 21:17 LT. These measurements detected during the upleg flight a large overheated area around the base of density profile. The presence of plasma bubbles was revealed during the downleg phase, as well as temperature enhancements detected preferentially at altitudes where plasma depletions are found. It was assumed that the region traversed by the rocket during the downleg was preceded before the bubble's onset by a large overheating as observed during the upleg flight. Analyzing this framework under the light of the Global Self-Consistent Model of the Thermosphere, Ionosphere and Protonosphere (GSM TIP), as well as a 2D numerical code that simulate the growth of an instability and the evolution of thermal energy inside a bubble, we found that despite an overheated area in the F-region bottomside can disturb the electron density profile around the altitude interval where such heat is deposited, it seems not have a direct influence over parameters responsible for the bubble onset. Additionally, the phenomenon of the intra-bubble thermal enhancement could be formed due to the convection of hot-electron fluid transported from the overheated region surrounding the base of the F-region to upper altitudes by the underlying mechanism of bubble generation. We present an analysis of the ionosphere and thermosphere response to Solar Proton Events (SPE) and magnetospheric proton precipitation in January 2005, which was carried out using the model of the entire atmosphere EAGLE. The ionization rates for the considered period were acquired from the AIMOS (Atmospheric Ionization Module Osnabrück) dataset. For numerical experiments, we applied only the proton-induced ionization rates of that period, while all the other model input parameters, including the electron precipitations, corresponded to the quiet conditions. In January 2005, two major solar proton events with different energy spectra and proton fluxes occurred on January 17 and January 20. Since two geomagnetic storms and several sub-storms took place during the considered period, not only solar protons but also less energetic magnetospheric protons contributed to the calculated ionization rates. Despite the relative transparency of the thermosphere for high-energy protons, an ionospheric response to the SPE and proton precipitation from the magnetotail was obtained in numerical experiments. In the ionospheric E layer, the maximum increase in the electron concentration is localized at high latitudes, and at heights of the ionospheric F2 layer, the positive perturbations were formed in the near-equatorial region. An analysis of the model-derived results showed that changes in the ionospheric F2 layer were caused by a change in the neutral composition of the thermosphere. We found that in the recovery phase after both solar proton events and the enhancement of magnetospheric proton precipitations associated with geomagnetic disturbances, the TEC and electron density in the F region and in topside ionosphere/plasmasphere increase at low- and mid-latitudes due to an enhancement of atomic oxygen concentration. Our results demonstrate an important role of magnetospheric protons in the formation of negative F-region ionospheric storms. According to our results, the topside ionosphere/plasmasphere and bottom-side ionosphere can react to solar and magnetospheric protons both with the same sign of disturbances or in different way. The same statement is true for TEC and foF2 disturbances. Different disturbances of foF2 and TEC at high and low latitudes can be explained by topside electron temperature disturbances.
