The transformative impact of modern computational paradigms and technologies, such as high-performance computing (HPC), quantum computing, and cloud computing, has opened up profound new opportunities for scientific simulations. Scalable computational chemistry is one beneficiary of this technological progress. The main focus of this paper is on the performance of various quantum chemical formulations, ranging from low-order methods to high-accuracy approaches, implemented in different computational chemistry packages and libraries, such as NWChem, NWChemEx, Scalable Predictive Methods for Excitations and Correlated Phenomena, ExaChem, and Fermi–Löwdin orbital self-interaction correction on Azure Quantum Elements, Microsoft's cloud services platform for scientific discovery. We pay particular attention to the intricate workflows for performing complex chemistry simulations, associated data curation, and mechanisms for accuracy assessment, which is demonstrated with the Arrows automated workflow for high throughput simulations. Finally, we provide a perspective on the role of cloud computing in supporting the mission of leadership computational facilities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An efficient and accurate approach for calculating exact exchange and other two-electron integrals has been developed for periodic electronic structure methods. Traditional approaches used for integrating over the Brillouin zone in band structure calculations, e.g. trapezoidal or Monkhorst-Pack, are not accurate enough for two-electron integrals. This is because their integrands contain multiple singularities over the double integration of the Brillouin zone, which with simple integration methods lead to very inaccurate results. A common approach to this problem has been to replace the Coulomb interaction with a screened Coulomb interaction that removes singularities from the integrands in the two-electron integrals, albeit at the inelegance of having to introduce a screening factor which must precomputed or guessed. Instead of introducing screened Coulomb interactions in an ad hoc way, the method developed in this work derives an effective screened potential using a Filon-like integration approach that is based only on the lattice parameters. This approach overcomes the limitations of traditionally defined screened Coulomb interactions for calculating two-electron integrals, and makes chemistry many-body calculations tractable in periodic boundary conditions. This method has been applied to several systems for which conventional DFT methods do not work well, including the reaction pathways for the addition of H2 to phenol and Au 20 − nanoparticle, and the electron transfer of a charge trapped state in the Fe(II) containing mica, annite. This paper focuses on describing the computational chemistry software, NWChem, and its use in materials science research. The current functionalities and capabilities are outlined, as well as future features. The atom-centered density-matrix propagation method is used to illustrate how time-dependent conformational changes affect the electronic structure and derived spectroscopic properties of a prototypical finite metal cluster-bound π-conjugated organic complex, Ag7-benzenethiol. We establish that there is considerable conformational flexibility to the model structure, even at relatively low temperatures, which influences the predicted spectroscopic properties. Namely, the computed electron densities, dipoles, and polarizabilities are all dictated by torsional motion which controls the coupling between the π-framework of the chemisorbed molecular system and the cluster. Abstract: Density-functional electronic structure calculations are used to compute the equilibrium constants for 26Mg/24Mg and 44Ca/40Ca isotope exchange between carbonate minerals and uncomplexed divalent aquo ions. The most reliable calculations at the B3LYP/6-311++G(2d,2p) level predict equilibrium constants K, reported as 103ln(K) at 25°C, of −5.3, −1.1, and +1.2 for 26Mg/24Mg exchange between calcite (CaCO3), magnesite (MgCO3), and dolomite (Ca0.5Mg0.5CO3), respectively, and Mg2+(aq), with positive values indicating enrichment of the heavy isotope in the mineral phase. For 44Ca/40Ca exchange between calcite and Ca2+(aq) at 25°C, the calculations predict values of +1.5 for Ca2+(aq) in 6-fold coordination and +4.1 for Ca2+(aq) in 7-fold coordination. We find that the reduced partition function ratios can be reliably computed from systems as small as and embedded in a set of fixed atoms representing the second-shell (and greater) coordination environment. We find that the aqueous cluster representing the aquo ion is much more sensitive to improvements in the basis set than the calculations on the mineral systems, and that fractionation factors should be computed using the best possible basis set for the aquo complex, even if the reduced partition function ratio calculated with the same basis set is not available for the mineral system. The new calculations show that the previous discrepancies between theory and experiment for Fe3+–hematite and Fe2+–siderite fractionations arise from an insufficiently accurate reduced partition function ratio for the Fe3+(aq) and Fe2+(aq) species. Abstract: Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were employed to understand the refractive index change in germanium doped silica glasses for the trapped states of electronic excitations induced by UV irradiation. Local structure relaxation and excess electron density distribution were calculated upon self-trapping of an excess electron, hole, and exciton in germanium doped silica glass. The results show that both the trapped exciton and excess electron are highly localized on germanium ion and, to some extent, on its oxygen neighbors. Exciton self-trapping is found to lead to the formation of a Ge E′ center and a non-bridging hole center. Electron trapping changes the GeO4 tetrahedron structure into trigonal bi-pyramid with the majority of the excess electron density located along the equatorial line. The self-trapped hole is localized on bridging oxygen ions that are not coordinated to germanium atoms that lead to elongation of the Si–O bonds and change of the Si–O–Si bond angles. We carried out a comparative study of standard DFT versus DFT with a hybrid PBE0 exchange and correlation functional. The results show that the two methods give qualitatively similar relaxed structure and charge distribution for electron and exciton trapping in germanium doped silica glass; however, only the PBE0 functional produces the self-trapped hole.
