Abstract: The electrorheological characteristics of a fluid system with semiconducting poly(naphthalene quinone) (PNQR) particles, synthesized from a Friedel–Craft acylation, were investigated via a rotational rheometer equipped with a high voltage generator. The flow curves of these ER fluids under several applied electric field strengths and particle concentrations were constructed and their flow characteristics were examined via three different rheological constitutive equations of Bingham model, De Kee–Turcotte model and our proposed model. We report on electrorheological (ER) properties of the suspensions containing chitosan particles in corn oil under various applied electric field strengths, finding that natural organic polymers such as chitosan possessing amino polar groups can effectively induce ER behavior. Chitosan-based ER fluids composed of both biocompatible polymer and suspending medium exhibited ER characteristics by showing an increased yield stress (τy) when electric field strength (E) and concentration of chitosan particle increase. We further found that τy∝E1.5 is consistent with the conduction model but not the polarization model, implying that our system has a smaller critical electric field strength. Abstract: The comments on the recent results on electrorheological (ER) property of rare earth modified amorphous barium strontium titanate gel based ER fluid are given via analysis of its dynamic yield stress data as a function of applied electric field strengths.
