The response of energy firms to green credit policy is of great significance, which is related to the emission reduction effect of green finance and transformation of energy firms. This paper analyzes the impact of green credit policy on the growth of energy firms based on the data of Chinese listed companies from 2009 to 2019. The empirical results show that green credit policy has significantly promoted the growth of energy firms. Further research shows that green credit policy promoted the growth of energy firms by reducing financing costs and promoting green innovation. Besides, the owned firms, big-scale firms and firms in central and eastern China are more susceptible to the impacts of the green credit policy. This paper constructs a unique dataset of clean energy and collects firm-level green innovation data that matches it with provinces and cities. Then, this paper executes quasi-natural experiments on green innovation to examine the effects of China's emission trading policy on green innovation. Further, this paper introduces the interactive terms of the pilot time and pilot area dummy variables into the spatial Durbin model (SDM) and spatial dynamic panel model (SDPM) to construct quasi-natural experiments to examine the spatial effect. The findings confirm a negative association between the 'policy treatment effect' and green innovation. The results also indicate a significant negative association between the emissions trading policy and clean energy. Besides, the empirical results reveal a positive correlation between clean energy and green innovation; clean energy promotes green innovation in the region and the surrounding areas. Whether the technological finance cooperation pilot (TFCP) policy in China can promote energy efficiency remains under investigated. Using the dataset covering 284 cities in China from 2003 to 2019, this paper adopts the Super-SBM model with undesirable outputs to measure energy efficiency. Based on this efficiency, the Difference-in-Differences model (DID) and Spatial Durbin model (SDM) are employed to discuss the impact of TFCP policy on energy efficiency. Results demonstrate that TFCP policy has significantly promoted energy efficiency. And the conclusion is still valid after the robustness checks and endogenous treatment has been carried out. The impact of the TFCP policy on energy efficiency is heterogeneous, depending on the geographical, administrative, and resource characteristics of cities. To be specific, the promotion effect tends to be pronounced in east-central cities, high-ranking cities, and high-tech cities. Moreover, TFCP policy could significantly improve energy efficiency through the effects of technological innovation, industrial upgrading, and financial development. A further policy spillover analysis shows that TFCP policy has exerted a remarkable incentive influence on energy efficiency locally, while the neighboring cities are inhibitive. To sum up, this research is of important theoretical value and policy-making reference on green economy transformation for cities with differential features and energy utilization capacity, by shedding light on the impacts of such a technological finance cooperation system on energy efficiency. To cope with global climate change and energy security, the realization of the low-carbon energy transition has become an inevitable choice for international carbon emission reduction requirements and energy structure adjustment. Vigorously developing renewable energy has become an essential part of energy policies in many countries. Under the incentive and guidance of renewable energy industry policy, China's renewable energy has developed rapidly, and energy structure has been optimized. However, many problems have been exposed. Can China's renewable energy industry policy effectively support low-carbon energy transition? This paper uses the method of theoretical analysis, combining literature analysis and data analysis. Based on the analysis of renewable energy policies in countries with relatively mature energy transitions, it analyzes the status quo, implementation effect, and problems of renewable energy policy in China and proposes policy suggestions. According to the research, the existing problems are as follows: (1) diminishing marginal effect of policies, (2) policy adjustment is not timely and lacks details and operability, (3) coordination conflicts between the old and new policies, (4) unreasonable policy supply structure, and (5) the negative impact of subsidy policy is increasing. To cope with climate change, China commits that it will strive to achieve carbon peaking by 2030. Using the Cointegration model and the Markov Chain model, this paper forecasts China's carbon emissions during 2019–2030 in six scenarios, and assesses the contribution of optimizing the energy mix to China's carbon peaking. The research obtains three main conclusions. Firstly, optimizing the energy mix will contribute to achieving China's carbon peaking. In the economic slow-growth scenario, taking China's planned target of energy mix (PTEM) into account, the carbon peaking year will be brought forward from 2028 to 2023. In the economic medium-speed-growth scenario, optimizing the energy mix will make China achieve carbon peaking in 2028. Without considering the PTEM, however, the carbon emissions will not peak before 2030. In the economic fast-growth scenario, the peaking year will not occur whether considering the PTEM or not, but the growth rate of carbon emissions with the PTEM will be far lower than that without considering the PTEM. Secondly, in all three economic growth scenarios, optimizing the energy mix will largely reduce the growth rate of carbon emissions, and thus significantly reduce the peak value of carbon emissions. Thirdly, optimizing the energy mix has a negative adjusting effect on the impact of economic growth on the growth rate of carbon emissions, and the negative effect rise as the economic growth rate increases. Nowadays, geopolitical, extreme weather and other emergencies have exacerbated the global energy crisis, and thus, have increased the urgency of the world's transition to sustainable energy. Sustainable energy policies play an important role in the process of sustainable energy transformation. The research on sustainable energy policy is mainly carried out through conventional qualitative and quantitative methods, in which bibliometrics and meta-analysis methods are paid attention to; however, the mining and analysis of the semantics of the relationships between policies are ignored. This paper uses knowledge graph technology to build a knowledge graph of China's sustainable energy policy by using 10,815 open official documents of sustainable energy policy issued by China from 1981 to 2022. It forms the relevant policy archive storage and details related organizations. The legal source can be traced through the graph database, where the powerful synergy can be seen, and the policy focus can be monitored. In terms of structural data, this paper uses graph algorithms to identify key policy nodes at different stages, to identify the key government departments for policy issuance and cluster policy issuance departments, and it investigates China's policy evolution in the issue of sustainable energy policies, the evolution of policy issuance departments, and the power co-evolution process between policy issuance departments. The research found that: (1) China's sustainable energy policy was initiated in environmental protection, and the relevant policies on collecting pollution charges has continued to play an important policy node. Additionally, the three versions of the Environmental Protection Law of the People's Republic of China have successively become the main legal source of other sustainable energy transformation policies. (2) The prominent feature of China's sustainable energy policy transformation has involved transforming the process where the issuance of policies came from a single department to the joint issuance of documents by multiple departments. The joint exercise of government functions and powers by multiple departments jointly promotes sustainable energy policies' implementation and play. (3) In the future, when formulating sustainable energy policies, the Chinese government should focus on the strategic and systematic aspects of the policies, so that the sustainable energy policies can meet both short-term and long-term development goals. At the same time, the synergy of various policies and measures should be fully played in implementing sustainable energy policies. The establishment of the policy knowledge graph based on publicly-open official documents can facilitate the analysis and visualization of sustainable energy policies, providing new ideas for policy research. This paper introduces the knowledge graph, graph machine learning algorithms and big data technology, which can deepen the depth and breadth of people's research on sustainable energy policy. To better address climate change and environmental pollution, it is of great practical significance to comprehensively evaluate the impact of low-carbon energy transition policies on carbon emission reduction. This paper conducts a policy quantitative evaluation of low-carbon energy transition policies from three dimensions: policy intensity, policy objective, and policy instrument. On this basis, the ridge regression model is used to analyze the carbon emission reduction effect of policies. The results show that (1) changes in policy quantities mainly cause the evolution of total policy effectiveness. The government's emphasis on low-carbon energy transition has fluctuated. (2) The two policy objectives of optimizing the use of fossil energy and developing a low-carbon concept are less synergistic with other policy objectives and neither has a significant impact on carbon reduction. (3) The government prefers to adopt command control policy instruments, but their actual carbon emission reduction effects are inferior to that of economic incentive policy instruments. Saving energy is an important strategy to address the current energy crisis and environmental degradation. Regarding the pilot policy of the energy quota trading as a quasi-natural experiment by employing a difference-in-differences method, the purpose of this paper is to investigate the effect of this pilot policy on energy saving and its mechanisms based on city-level data in China from 2006 to 2020. We find that the energy quota trading policy can reduce the total energy consumption and energy consumption intensity of pilot cities, and the effect of the policy can gradually strengthen over time. The market-oriented reform of energy factor allocation can effectively promote energy saving and economic growth. These results are convincing through a series of robustness checks. The heterogeneity test shows that the energy quota trading has a significant energy saving effect on economically developed cities, densely populated cities and southern cities, but not in economically underdeveloped cities, sparsely populated cities and northern cities. Further mechanism inspection suggests that the pilot policy of energy quota trading mainly achieves energy conservation through industrial structure upgrading and green technology innovation. Based on the input-output panel data of industrial sectors of Shanxi Province, which is the only province-wide resource-based region in China, this paper uses the non-parametric DEA model and the Malmquist productivity index to construct the DEA-Malmquist model for evaluation analysis of the green total factor productivity (GTFP) and its decomposition value of the sub-sector, and then through fixed effect panel regression model studies the ways of energy transition of the SDG's. The results show that the technological progress index has the greatest contribution to the growth of GTFP, while the scale efficiency index has the lowest contribution. And the amount of investment in environmental pollution control has a significant positive relationship with the GTFP of the three major polluting industries in Shanxi. Among them, investment in environmental pollution control has the greatest positive effect on the GTFP of light polluting industries characterized by high technology, high added value and low emissions; investment in environmental pollution control has the largest positive effect on the GTFP of heavy polluting industries with heavy chemical industry and pollution-intensive industries; investment in environmental pollution control has the weakest positive effect on the GTFP of the medium polluting industries that manufacture life service products and some heavy industrial products. China states to build new power system dominated by new energy power to promote the targets for peaking carbon emissions by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060. Peaking regulation ancillary services provided by coal-fired power units is an essential solution to mitigate the volatility and instability of large-scale renewable energy for China's specific power mix. However, when the coal-fired power units operate at a low power output, the intensity of both coal consumption and carbon emissions gradually rises with the falling output rate. Moreover, cutting down the power output of coal-fired units frequently will damage the technical life. Given the impacts of power market reform and carbon mitigation targets, whether to participate in the energy market or the peaking regulation ancillary service market is an urgent issue for coal-fired power units. Considering the discrepancy in costs and benefits of various units at different output rate, this paper proposes a multi-objective optimization model to solve the issue from the perspective of the coal-fired power generators, in which both economic profit and carbon reduction goals are coordinated. Sequential quadratic programming is adopted to solve the nonlinear optimization problem. In order to study the difference in the decisions made by varied technical units, 7 different types of units are analyzed in the case study. The scenarios analysis indicates that large-capacity and new coal-fired power units are better to participate in energy market since it can give full play to the advantage of higher generation efficiency, while the small-capacity ones are suitable to provide flexible service in the peaking regulation ancillary service market. Besides, simple low-carbon objective will burden the cost of coal-fired power units and challenge the sustainable transition of power system. Energy efficiency (EE) plays an important role in achieving the dual-carbon goal, and improving EE is thus indispensable. This paper evaluates the impact of carbon emission trading policy (CETP) on EE based on a difference-in-difference (DID) method, using 16-year data of 30 provinces and cities from 2005 to 2020. Conclusions are as follows: (1) CETP significantly promotes EE, and this conclusion still appears valid after robustness tests. (2) The positive impact of CETP on EE is more effective in regions of high foreign direct investment (FDI) and high government intervention (GOVI). (3) The positive impact of CETP on EE is through impact mechanisms of energy structure adjustment (ESA), green innovation (GI), and industrial structure upgrading (ISU). In China, cogeneration units predominantly employ a flexible operation mechanism. However, it is possible that this could lead to a decline in performance and an increase in energy consumption. This paper introduces a methodology that utilizes the data mining technique to ascertain the benchmark value section of the energy efficiency status index for cogeneration units. The equal interval division method is utilized for the purpose of categorizing the operating conditions. The Gaussian mixture model is utilized to ascertain the benchmark value section in relation to the fluctuating operating conditions by estimating the probability of historical data. The methodology is verified by utilizing historical data from a functioning cogeneration unit. The findings suggest that the unit's total heat consumption can be decreased by 32.5–50 kJ·(kW·h)−1 when compared to the design-based approach. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The lower price of energy leads to higher coal consumption in China. The idea of an "environment-for-trade policy" could be used to achieve an international competitive advantage, which, in turn, has important implications. To address the issue, we develop properties to examine the link between the low price of energy and strategic environmental policy in China and investigate the choice of policy instruments in a strategic environmental policy model with vertical contracts. In addition, to contribute to the literature on strategic environmental policy, this paper also develops properties to investigate different choices of instruments for the environmental policy and includes the degree of energy marketization for the wholesale price in the study. To do so, we assume that the wholesale price of the polluting input increases with the market price. By using this assumption, this paper analyzes the effects of two instruments of the environmental policy on social welfare and concludes that there is no reason to expect both downstream and upstream firms to establish a high wholesale price. Due to the low level of marketization, when the government selects an emission tax as the policy instrument, the optimal tax rates should be higher than the marginal damage of emissions. However, the optimal resource tax is uncertain when its effect on environmental damage is taken into account. In other words, the resource tax is ineffective as a policy instrument. Our results can be used to draw some practical policies for countries to use their energy effectively. Unlike many Western countries, the Chinese state has a much more active role in innovation that includes direct involvement with actors in innovation processes and the use of state capacity, money, and power to attain certain goals. With the rise of China, innovation processes that critically depend on state action, often labeled state‐led innovation, have thus received growing scholarly attention. However, only few contributions study the specific sector of new energy vehicles (NEV) and policy measures applied at the city level. This paper examines policy and planning tools used in Shenzhen, China, to assert innovation in the NEV industry, using an evaluation of documents and interviews. The paper finds that a city can play a decisive role in the implementation of innovation policy, and Chinese cities in particular make use of a broad set of innovation support measures ranging from binding quotas, public procurement, and incentives to bans and orders. The findings underline the importance of strong regulatory instruments that do not conform to the Western notion of market‐compliant policy, but nevertheless work effectively in the Chinese context. This paper develops a fixed effect model to evaluate the effect of wind power policy using a panel dataset covering 30 provinces in China during the period 2000–2017 based on the framework of the Renewable Energy Law and its accompanying policies. The empirical results show that three mechanisms, the Total target mechanism, the Feed-in tariffs (FIT) mechanism, and the Special fund mechanism, are significant in improving wind generation and capacity. The Total target mechanism's impact on wind capacity is greater than is that of generation, the effect of both the FIT mechanism and the Special fund mechanism is greater on wind generation than on capacity. The FIT decline mechanism and the Cost sharing mechanism have mutually reinforcing relationships in respect of wind development. The Mandatory connection and purchase mechanism's effect on wind capacity is significant, whereas its effect on wind generation depends on the specific implementation policy. Forecasting carbon prices has important implications for the formulation of environmental and energy policies as well as for the investment and management of workers in related industries. This paper proposes a novel multi-index nonlinear ensemble framework based on carbon price trading data and technical index data, which combines extreme gradient boost (XGBoost), K-means clustering algorithm based on elbow method (KCE), bidirectional long and short-term memory (BiLSTM) and bidirectional gated recurrent units (BiGRU). First, the XGBoost method is used to filter the raw data set to determine the input variables, and they were then divided into groups using the KCE method. Then, the BiLSTM method is used as the predictor for forecasting the sub model. Finally, BiGRU is applied to nonlinear integration. The developed prediction framework is used to predict China's regional carbon price to evaluate its performance. Experimental results show that the prediction performance of the framework in all target carbon markets is better than the benchmark model, and it is an effective tool for carbon market. Residential electricity consumption has an important impact on China's construction of a low-carbon society. However, at present, little of the literature analyzes the influencing factors of residents' overall well-being from the perspective of micro investigation. Based on the micro mixed cross section data of the Chinese General Social Survey (CGSS), this paper empirically studies the impact of residential electricity consumption on residents' subjective well-being. In addition, in the heterogeneity analysis, we found that an increase in residential electricity consumption will improve the overall well-being of females and people with low levels of education, but it has no significant effect on males and people with high levels of education. Moreover, the increase in residential electricity consumption has improved the life satisfaction of young people and middle-aged people. Meanwhile, the increase in residential electricity consumption has a significant, positive impact on both low-income and high-income households. Further analysis shows that no nonlinear relationship exists between the increase in residents' power consumption and the improvement in life satisfaction. This paper enriches the research on residential energy and provides policy implications for the current Chinese government to save energy, reduce emissions, and improve residents' quality of life. In this paper, we investigate the determinants of decline in energy intensity in four Chinese industries—pulp and paper, cement, iron and steel, and aluminum. This paper attempts to answer the following key question: For the purpose of promoting energy efficiency, do prices, technology, enterprise restructuring and other policy-related instruments affect various sectors uniformly so as to justify uniform industrial energy conservation policies, or do different industries respond significantly differently so as to require policies that are tailored to each sector separately? In this paper, we examine this question using data for China's most energy-intensive large and medium-size enterprises over the period 1999-2004. Our results suggest that in all four industries rising energy costs are a significant contributor to the decline in energy intensity over our period of study. With the continuous tension of the international energy supply and the increasing appeal of the global environmental protection, the development of the new energy vehicle industry has attracted international attention. In order to support the development of new energy automobile production, China has frequently issued support policies. However, the problem of subsidy fraud has been exposed. Therefore, in order to help the healthy development of China's new energy automobile industry and reduce the risk of subsidy fraud, this paper investigates 15 representative new energy auto enterprises in China and independently evaluates their performance from three aspects. We first use triangular fuzzy numbers (TFNs) to simulate an uncertain decision environment and more closely reflect the decision maker's thinking model; we then propose an analytic hierarchy process (AHP)-technique for order preference by similarity to an ideal solution (TOPSIS) method based on fuzzy data to rank 15 enterprises. Finally, according to the performance of enterprises, we propose differentiated subsidy policy recommendations. The model proposed in this paper takes into account the uncertainty of subjective evaluation so as to increase the credibility of the results. Dependency on coal consumption to maintain energy security is common to the majority of developing countries where the coal is found in abundance. China and India are the leaders in coal consumption from the developing countries group, so establishing a relationship between the coal consumption and the economic growth for these two will derive useful lessons for policy-makers. This paper re-examines the causal relationship between coal consumption and economic growth in China and India for the period 1969–2013, for the first time using a frequency domain–based Granger causality test proposed by Brietung and Candelon (2006). The empirical results support unidirectional causality running from coal consumption to economic growth for both China and India. The green fiscal policy stands as a potent catalyst for fostering the green and low-carbon transition, with aims to garner multifaceted social, economic, and ecological gains. However, empirical evidence elucidating the impacts of green fiscal policies on firm energy performance remains scarce. Based on a unique firm-level dataset from 2008 to 2016, this paper utilizes the staggered difference-in-differences strategy to examine the energy-saving benefits of China's energy saving and emission reduction (ESER) fiscal policy. The results indicate that the ESER fiscal policy effectively enhances firm energy performance, supported by various robustness checks. Mechanism analysis reveals that technology innovation and energy consumption restructuring are significant channels through which the ESER fiscal policy improves firm energy performance. Moreover, the ESER fiscal policy contributes more remarkably to the energy performance of large-scale firms and non-resource-based urban firms. It is generally accepted that China is a significant cause of global warming and other climate change consequences. This paper applies panel cointegration tests and autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) techniques to investigate the interactions among energy policy, technological innovation, economic development, trade openness, and sustainable development using panel data from China from 1990 to 2020. Results explain that renewable energy policy and technology innovation are negatively associated with sustainable development. However, research shows that energy use significantly increases both short-term and long-term environmental damage. The findings show that economic growth has a lasting impact on the environment by distorting it. The findings recommend that politicians and government officials hold the key to attaining a green and clean environment by focusing on developing the proper energy policy mix, urban planning, and pollution prevention without compromising economic growth. This paper explores the effect of carbon trading on low-carbon transformation of high energy consumption enterprises in China. Based on the mechanism of interaction and restriction among high energy consumption enterprises, carbon verification agencies and the government, a tripartite evolutionary game model is constructed. The three-dimensional dynamic system is built to analyze the behavior patterns of the three parties. The evolution path of the tripartite game is visualized, and the low-carbon transformation states of high energy consumption enterprises in different situations are described. The results show that the high energy consumption enterprises, verification organization and the government cannot reach the optimal game equilibrium (low-carbon transformation, verification and supervision) temporarily when seeking their own interests. The corresponding measures should be taken with different situations of the tripartite game. In the context of the global potential energy crisis and aggravating regional environmental pollution, Chinese photovoltaic power generation still faces the key problems of sustainable development, even given its favorable background in large-scale exploitation. Scientific evaluation of the comprehensive efficiency of photovoltaic power generation is of great significance because it will improve investment decision-making and enhance management level, evaluate the development conditions of photovoltaic power generation and then promote sustainable development capability. The concept of “comprehensive efficiency” is proposed in this paper on the basis of the resource development of solar energy and exploitation of photovoltaic power generation. A system dynamics model is used to study the conduction mechanism of the comprehensive efficiency of photovoltaic power generation. This paper collects data from 2005 to 2015 as research models, establishes the evaluation model of the comprehensive efficiency of photovoltaic power generation and conducts empirical analysis based on a super-efficient data envelopment analysis (SE-DEA) model. With the evaluation results, this paper puts forward political suggestions as to the optimization of the comprehensive efficiency of photovoltaic power generation. The research results may provide policy-oriented references on the sustainable development of photovoltaic power generation and give theoretical guidance on the scientific evaluation and diagnosis of photovoltaic power generation efficiency. Household energy consumption accounts for almost one third of global primary energy demand and significantly affects the environment. As such, it has served as a classic and compelling theme in the literature, with a range of studies having analyzed various aspects of household consumption, including energy conservation, energy poverty, and energy efficiency. Nonetheless, overall trends and frontiers in this research area have not been characterized and are poorly understood. This study aims to assess the current status, evolution, and emerging topics in this area through a bibliometric and network analysis of 1134 extracted publications from 1983 to 2018. This systematic review shows that nearly half the studies on household energy consumption were published in just three journals (namely, Energy Policy; Energy; and Energy Economics) with a focus on three areas (Environmental Sciences and Ecology; Energy and Fuels; Business and Economics). The findings also show that among contributing countries, the USA and China have the closest ties and wield the most academic influence. Furthermore, emerging and pioneering studies on behavioral interventions, energy conservation, and energy poverty and those pertaining to climate and electricity consumption may constitute the research frontier. Energy poverty has multidimensional and dynamic nature and is hard to measure quantitatively. This paper combines AF double-cut-off method, and the duration analysis approach to develop both the CUEP index and CMEP index and utilizes the Cox proportional hazard model to check the role of energy efficiency in poverty alleviation. Results are based on data in the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) from 2011 to 2018. The findings suggest that 75.887% of households are deprived of CUEP, and nearly 50% of the residents are suffering from CMEP in China. Additionally, nearly 33.546% of the households are deprived only in the dimension of affordability, and there is an obvious overlap between the incidence of two indexes, of which 42.372% of the households simultaneously suffer from deprivation in affordability, accessibility, and availability. Finally, the improvement in energy efficiency reduces the duration of energy poverty and increases the state transition of energy poverty. The presented concept and approach could be expanded to investigate energy poverty in other developing countries and assist policymakers to assess the benefits of energy policies. With the promotion of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals and the construction of renewable-dominated electric power systems, renewable energy will become the main power source of power systems in China. How to ensure the accommodation of renewable energy will also be the core issue in the future development process of renewable-dominated electric power systems. In this context, shared energy storage (SES), a novel business model combined with energy storage technologies and the sharing economy, has the potential to play an important role in renewable energy accommodation scenarios. This paper systematically organizes the application prospect, development status and key technologies of SES in the renewable energy accommodation scenario in the context of China, providing helpful references for the promotion of the business model. Firstly, a typical SES framework for renewable energy accommodation is described, and three basic forms of SES in this scenario are presented. Moreover, the application prospect of SES in the renewable energy accommodation scenario is quantitatively analyzed based on the renewable energy generation planning under the carbon peaking goal and the current guarantee mechanism of renewable energy accommodation. Furthermore, the rules for energy storage systems that provide the peak-regulation ancillary service in typical regions and provincial administrative regions in China are summarized, and the development status of SES in the renewable energy accommodation scenario is analyzed, combined with the actual market data. China's 11th Five-Year Plan introduced various policy instruments to address carbon mitigation; however, the ex-post-policy impacts need to be investigated in a scientific and systematic way to guide future policy design. In this paper, we estimate the impacts of the heat metering and energy efficiency retrofitting policy (HMEER) on residential energy consumption in Chinese provinces using a difference-in-differences approach. Our results suggest that the HMEER policy reduces energy consumption in the treated regions by 10% per year on average, with an annual reduction in CO2 of approximately 50 Mt. New energy vehicle (NEV) policies involve extensive and complex aspects. NEV policies have been an important issue of academic interest in the academic research community. The current research of the NEV policy has the key significance of inducing experience and guiding the future. This study conducts a comprehensive bibliometric analysis through quantitative research methods to summarize the development and evolution of NEV policy in recent years. Using Citespace visualization tools, we reviewed 2919 papers collected from the Web of Science, identified three stages in the development of the research field, and summarized features relevant to the policy in history. The most influential countries, institutions, authors, keywords, and references have been examined. Through burst detection and cluster analysis, we analyzed historical trends and trajectories in this area of research. In the data we collected, a number of indicators are related to China, indicating that China's NEV policy has a representative significance in the field of NEV policy research. Consequently, we further collected the relevant research from China, in order to summarize the policy reasons behind the rapid development of NEVs in China, and help researchers to have a better understanding of the frontiers of NEVs. Promoting crop residue-based bioenergy (CRB) is a strategy for mitigating climate change and ensuring water-energy-food security. Although China has abundant crop residues, CRB is not well developed, and several policy targets are not being reached. These implementation gaps need critical examination as CRB development mainly relies on policy support. This examination provides a framework to assess the feasibility of this policy that covers several cross-cutting issues. By reviewing national policies, this paper analyzes the horizontal coherence of multisectoral CRB policies during the last two decades. Based on 55 semi-structured interviews, conducted with stakeholders, civil servants and experts, we analyzed the vertical coherence among policy implementation to further explore the causes of the limited success of CRB policies. The priority given to the cultivation and livestock sectors (particularly for soil improvement) in crop residue utilization policies and the development of energy policy targets resulted in horizontal policy incoherence. Furthermore, financial limitations were shown to be the most significant obstacle to CRB policy implementation. Successful CRB policy implementation requires a debate about the crop residue utilization for either energy or fertilizer to determine the more sustainable application. Under different technological innovation modes, regional energy consumption may have spatial heterogeneity. Spatial heterogeneity complicates the nexus between environmental regulation and energy consumption. Traditional spatial homogeneity analysis is hard to describe the nonlinear nexus between them. Based on the data of 30 provinces in China from 2007 to 2017, this paper employs the spatial econometric method and the nonlinear econometric method to investigate the spatial effects and nonlinearity of energy consumption, respectively. The results display that under the current level of economic development, per capita energy consumption has a significant spatial spillover effect. Environmental regulation promotes regional per capita energy consumption in the short term. On the contrary, the technological effect of environmental regulation has significantly reduced Chinese per capita energy consumption. Therefore, energy policy should be tailored to local conditions, and policymakers can strengthen the environmental regulatory system and encourage enterprises to implement green technology innovation. As an effective policy instrument to reduce energy consumption and CO emissions, the effects of fuel taxation on income distribution have been the critical factor that determines whether a fuel tax could be acceptable in China. This paper estimates the distributional effects of a fuel tax on households in various income groups by using the input-output model. Results indicate that the total distributional effects of fuel taxes are moderately progressive; that is, high-income households would bear more tax burden compared to low-income households. In addition, the indirect effects are larger than the direct effects. Moreover, the Kakwani and Suits indices show that fuel excise taxes are progressive, implying that a fuel tax could improve the unfair income distribution. In order to reduce the negative impact of fuel taxes on low-income households, it is necessary for the government to design a reasonable redistribution mechanism of tax revenue or adopt compensatory measures such as the transfer payments targeted on low-income groups. The current legal and policy system of renewable energy in China has set up a framework of policy instruments, which provides an important foundation for dealing with climate change and promoting the healthy development of the renewable energy industry with the goal of "carbon neutrality" and "emission peak". However, the current policy instruments cannot meet the needs for rapid development of the renewable energy industry. This paper investigates, analyzes, and concludes the status of renewable energy development along with related policy instruments in different renewable energy sources by literature and points out the problems of current policy instruments, and puts forward corresponding countermeasures. Moreover, from the perspective of energy consumption market transformation, the authors carried out an analysis of China's challenges of policy instruments, pointing out that China's renewable energy policy instruments have the potential to take one step further in the areas of the regulatory system, legal system and legal security system. Green credit policy (GCP) has dual attributes of being both an "environmental regulation" and a "financial instrument". Understanding its role in facilitating industrial green transformation is crucial. However, there is limited theoretical and empirical evidence on the impact of GCP on industrial green transformation. This research fills this gap by comprehensively investigating the impacts and mechanisms of GCP on industrial energy intensity (EI) in China, considering both incentive and constraint effects. Theoretically, the environmental and financial impacts of GCP are merged into a unified analytical framework based on a heterogeneous enterprise model. Empirically, diverse empirical methods, including difference-in-differences (DID), difference-in-differences-in-differences (DDD), and mediating effects models, are adopted to examine whether GCP can promote green innovation or accelerate financial constraints. Results show that (1) GCP significantly decreases EI, especially among high-polluting enterprises (HPEs). The impact of incentives is far greater than that of constraints. (2) Regarding the incentive effect, energy substitution and innovation offsets exert a primary influence on reducing EI. (3) The constraint effect is caused primarily by rising financing and pollution abatement costs. (4) Heterogeneity analysis shows that the inhibiting effect of GCP is more significant in non-state-owned enterprises, underdeveloped financial markets, and abundant energy endowments. This paper explores how aspects of national culture may shape the design and implementation of public policy, using the example of energy policy in China. It focuses on cognitive style and on political and legal culture. China’s energy policies display a combination of pragmatism, incrementalism, internal contradiction and ambiguity. This is consistent with evidence from experimental psychology and history that the development of Chinese and East Asian cognitive styles have taken a path distinct from those of Western civilizations with their Greek philosophical heritage. These variations of cognitive style between cultures are reflected in brain function and genes. Policy implementation also bears features from imperial times in the political culture of China’s Communist Party and the contemporary legal system. To cope with global climate risks, promoting energy transformation has become a global consensus. China issued a reform policy in 2010 to promote the convergence of the three major information industries, namely broadcasting and television networks, telecommunications networks and the Internet (TPR policy). However, is the convergence of information industries able to promote energy transition? This study constructs a quasi-natural experimental framework using China's TPR policy as a representative case of industrial convergence. Using city-level panel data between 2003 and 2016 in China and a multi-period difference-in-differences model, this study examines the impact of TPR policy on energy transition. The results show that TPR policy positively contributes to energy transition at a 1% significance level. Extensive robustness tests support this finding. This positive effect is particularly evident in regions with less developed communications infrastructure and stricter environmental regulations. Mechanism analysis suggests that TPR policy promotes energy transition by improving the level of information networks, promoting technological innovation, and optimizing industrial structure. This paper examines the impact of shadow economy and environmental policy stringency on energy consumption and economic growth in the case of China for the period 1993 to 2019. Asymmetric ARDL empirical findings show that positive shocks in shadow economy and environmental policy stringency have a significant and positive impact on energy consumption and economic growth in the long run. However, the negative shocks in shadow economy exert positive and significant impacts on energy consumption and economic growth in the long run, but magnitudes are small compared to positive shocks. The long-run findings report no significant effect of negative shock in environmental policy stringency on energy consumption and economic growth. China should use environmental policy stringency as economic tools to maintain green economic growth and clean energy demand for sustained economic expansion. The issue focuses on environmental science and research in China and is the first time that an entire issue has documented the results of research conducted by Chinese scientists living in China. The author examines the economic growth in China that has been achieved through excessive energy consumption and the inefficient use of natural resources, and its impact on the environment.

As the Chinese government has promulgated many renewable energy generation policies to reduce carbon emissions and stimulate the renewable energy industry, it is vital to assess the policy effectiveness and extent to which they encourage sustainable renewable energy generation. This paper focused on the most prominent and the best-performing policy mechanisms feed-in tariffs (FIT) and renewable portfolio standards (RPS), and developed a system dynamics model to comprehensively evaluate the effectiveness and sustainability of the renewable energy generation policies. The model clearly shows the complex causal relationships between the related economic and environmental factors, and the policy scenarios were simulated to indicate the future trends and illustrate the coordination processes between polices and compare the development effects. The results show that current FIT has no obvious impact on the sustainable development of renewable energy industry, while under the integrated scenario, the RPS quota growth rate and fines have a significant positive effect after the construction period. The findings also suggest that a FIT-RPS integrated renewable energy generation policy and a perfect RPS trading system should be prioritized, and the RPS quota ratios and fines should be appropriately increased. As various policies cannot be simultaneously implemented because of financial and resource limitations, the proposed system of dynamics-based analysis approach is useful to analyze policy effectiveness and long-term industry sustainability to ensure the provision of optimized policies. Both supply- and demand-oriented solutions are important in cleaning up the electricity sector. However, their successful deployment calls for the removal of various barriers. This paper looks at China's electricity industry, one of the world's largest emitters of greenhouse gases, by relating the regulatory framework to the environmental dimension of sustainable electricity development. It develops an analytical framework by drawing upon the literature on the deployment of supply- and demand-side solutions, regulatory governance, and environmental policy integration. The paper finds that, in China's electricity sector, environmental considerations are subordinate to economic and development goals in policymaking and enforcement. Purpose Rural energy policy is a critical measure to fight the long-standing poverty issue in China. Energy poverty, per se, is one important yet too often neglected dimension of poverty, and one of the biggest challenges in rural China during the 40-year rural reform. Reducing energy poverty is one of the poverty alleviation tasks and the goals of energy transition in the rural areas. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the status of energy poverty in China, discussing the challenges of energy poverty reduction, and then proposing the potential measures.Design/methodology/approach Using various data (including the authors’ survey data), this paper analyzes the volume and structure of energy use, and affordability of energy for the rural households, then examines the impacts of energy poverty on health, social and productivity, and finally discusses the infrastructure, cognitive ability, culture, income, etc., that shape the challenges to energy poverty reduction.Findings In addition to raising the household income, it is urgently needed to enforce the collaborations among government departments, and to improve the energy infrastructure according to local conditions, helping the residential environment cognition.Originality/value Energy poverty is almost a too often neglected issue in rural China. Summary: The consumption of fossil fuel has resulted in global warming, environmental pollution, and many other crucial problems. Replacing fossil fuel with renewable energy has become an important issue over the recent decades. As a renewable clean energy, wind power is a relatively well‐developed and promising energy method for current technology development in China. Under the background of growing demand for electricity and enhancing awareness for environmental, the “Internet+ wind power” concept has emerged based on both the wind power's characteristics that renewable and non‐polluting, and the rapid development of the Internet in China. Through querying an amount of literature and information, this paper reveals the resource endowment and policy environment about wind power and energy Internet at first. Then, the PEST‐SWOT strategy analysis model is used to analyze the internalities (strengths and weaknesses) and the externalities (opportunities and threats) of “Internet+ wind power”. According to these results, the paper puts forward some measures (development and utilization, business mode) for wind power accommodation. Then some policy recommendations have been proposed. Based on the total factor productivity and the resource efficiency, this paper proposes a synthesized data envelopment analysis (DEA) model by using the DEA approach and the Malmquist index. Furthermore, this model is applied to a comprehensive empirical study of the resource efficiency evaluation in China from 2013 to 2015. By introducing some desirable and undesirable factors, we calculate and analyze the whole resource efficiency, the input redundancy ratio, and the output inefficiency ratio of China from 2013 to 2015 based on the synthesized DEA model. Then, we analyze the dynamic trends of the resource efficiency in 31 provinces of China during these three years by applying the corresponding Malmquist index. After that, some interesting conclusions are derived, which are useful for the government. At last, some practical suggestions about improving the resource efficiency of these provinces are provided. Purpose In the creation of coal consumption reduction policy, the Chinese Government selected eight provinces as key provinces and encouraged them to replace coal with other non-coal energy, involving Kaldor-Hicks improvement. The purpose of this paper is to answer how much coal can be conserved if Kaldor-Hicks improvement is considered.Design/methodology/approach A DEA model reflecting Kaldor-Hicks improvement is suggested to calculate the potential of coal reduction, and an endogenous directional distance function model is proposed to calculate the energy consumption efficiency.Findings The results show that the non-key provinces wasted more coal than the key provinces, although the latter are of more concern. From the Kaldor-Hicks criterion, ten non-key provinces in a certain year can save more coal from an energy substitution policy and eight key provinces cannot. Through measurement of coal and energy efficiency, it is also found that provinces with an abundance of coal perform the worst in China.Originality/value Previous studies measuring Chinese saving potential of coal mainly focused on Pareto-Koopmans criterion, not consistent to policy practices. This paper reexamines the relationship between energy consumption and output growth in China over the period from 1969 to 2013, using an asymmetric Granger causality test proposed by Hatemi-J (2012). This article uses oil and coal as the major energy consumption variables because both coal consumption increased by more 2.3 billion over the past 10 years and oil consumption grew by 4.3% at the end of 2016. Empirical results indicate asymmetric Granger causal relationship did exist between energy consumption (for both oil and coal consumption) and output growth in China. This manuscript aimed to seek influencing factors of energy consumption in China's energy-intensive industries employing the generalized logarithmic mean Divisia index (LMDI) and input-output analysis. The research stated clearly that decomposition factors covered energy structure, energy intensity, industry structure, complete demand, final demand structure, and final demand total effect. The results showed that the decrease of energy consumption in energy-intensive industries heavily relied on energy intensity and industry structure. However, final demand total effect, which specifically involved the investment demand and export expansion, was a dominant element driving energy consumption growth. Accordingly, speeding up the industrial structure adjustment, improving the import and export mix, and reducing energy intensity have been the primary approaches to decrease energy consumption in energy-intensive industries. These approaches would accelerate the target of a 16% decline in energy intensity compared with 2010 in China's Twelfth Five-Year Plan.
