Osmia solitary bees are important pollinators of various crops worldwide. Refrigeration has been widely used to synchronize the emergence time of Osmia species from cocoons with the blooming time of different crops, but the fitness of Osmia after refrigeration remains unknown. Here, the effects of long‐term refrigeration at 0 °C on the vitality, flight ability, and metabolism of Osmia excavata, which is known as the "king of pollination" in China, were studied. The survival rate (>90% before 120 d), weight loss rate (<15% after 170 d), and mean flight speed of O. excavata were not greatly affected after long‐term refrigeration. The content of fats, which have antifreeze and energy storage properties, was not significantly altered in O. excavata before 130 d of refrigeration, which might explain why the survival rates and flight speed of O. excavata remained high after long‐term refrigeration. However, the flight duration and distance decreased significantly (P < 0.05), and both were positively correlated with the reduced trehalose levels in O. excavata (r = [+0.69] – [+0.71]; P < 0.05). Overall, these findings indicate that the pollination potential of O. excavata for various crops with different flowering periods is high after long‐term refrigeration; however, long‐term refrigeration may decrease pollination efficiency. As an electrode for energy storage, the inherently poor conductivity of metal hydroxides (MHs) can be improved by in situ growth of MHs on conductive carbon based substrates so that their performances on energy storage could be enhanced to a high level. However, the incompatibility of hydrophilic component (metal hydroxides) and hydrophobic counterpart (carbon based materials) makes it difficult to be accomplished. Herein, we presented a scalable and easy-operated strategy by ball-milling combined with ion-exchange technique to grow Mg-Co-Ni LDH (layered double hydroxides) on reduced graphene, in which ball-milling was utilized to disperse the staring material of magnesium acetate on graphene oxide (GO) to obtain the composite of Mg(Ac) 2 /GO. The composite can be in situ transformed to MgO/reduced grapheme (rG) by following heat treatment. While, the ion-exchange reaction could enables the in situ growth of Mg-Co-Ni LDHs on the reduced graphene. The derived products (denoted as Mg-Co-Ni LDH/rG- x) owns nanosheet morphology, surface area of 59–115 m2/g, homogenous elements distribution. As electrode for supercapacitor, the maximum capacitance of 1204F/g@1.0 A/g was achieved and the corresponding asymmetric supercapacitor device shows a large energy density of 44.3 Wh/kg@800 W/kg. Particularly, a superlong cycling stability with 90.5% capacitance retention of the first cycle was attained after continuous charge/discharge for 20 000 cycles at current density of 5.0 A/g, promising great potential for practical energy storage application. Electrochromic energy storage devices (EESDs) are incorporating electrochromic and energy storage functions, which can visually display energy storage levels in real‐time to promote the next generation of transparent battery development. However, their performances are still limited for practical applications. Herein, a self‐powered EESD based on complex niobium tungsten oxide is designed using aqueous Zn2+ and hybrid Zn2+/Mn+ (Mn+ = Al3+, Mg2+, and K+) electrolytes. The results reveal that the use of Zn2+/Al3+ hybrid electrolyte achieves superior electrochromic performances including a short self‐coloring time, high optical contrast, and excellent cyclic stability. Furthermore, it is also found that the self‐coloring process is accompanied by a high discharged capacity of niobium tungsten oxide, with high optical modulation in the Zn2+/Al3+ hybrid electrolyte. The detailed mechanism on the performances of EESD using various electrolytes is systematically studied. Templating techniques have been widely adopted for the synthesis of porous carbons, such as oxygen-doped porous carbon nanosheets (O-PCNs), but the effect of the surface characteristics of templates on the surface functionality and performance of a derived carbon has not been well studied. Herein, a series of laboratory-made superbases of K/Mg(OH) 2 with different K/Mg ratios were employed as template to fabricate nanocarbon materials. The aim is to find out how the strength of template basicity could influence the surface functionalities and the supercapacitor performances of the derived O-PCNs. The resulting materials are rich in conjugated hydroxyl and carbonyl groups that are electrochemically active owing to the protection of the conjugated hydroxyl group by KOH and the dehydrogenation step catalyzed by magnesium oxide. Systematic investigations revealed that with the increase of basic strength, the content of the derived electrochemically active oxygen species in the forms of conjugated carbonyl (C O) and hydroxyl (C OH) first increases from 8.4 atom% to 11.4 atom% then decreases to 9.25 atom%. Moreover, the microporosity of the O-PCNs stepwise increases with the rise of KOH loading, ascribable to the effect of KOH etching on the carbon skeleton. The O-PCN-20 templated by 20 % K/Mg(OH) 2 is rich in porosity, large in surface area (930 m2/g) and high in active oxygen content (11.4 atom%). With high active surface area and extra Faradaic capacitance, O-PCN-20 exhibited superior supercapacitor performances including large specific capacitance of 375 F/g@1.0 A/g, high rate capability of 81.1 % (from 1.0 A/g to 20 A/g), energy density of 25.7 Wh/kg@900 W/kg and excellent cycling stability with near 100 % capacitance retentions after 10 000 cycles and more than 86.2 % capacitance retention over 20 000 cycles at large current density of 10 A/g, indicating O-PCN-20 has potential to be used as electrode material for energy storage devices. All-solid-state lithium-metal batteries have been regarded as the next-generation energy storage due to the potential high safety and high energy density. However, for oxide solid electrolytes (SEs), the relatively low ionic conductivities and the growth of lithium dendrite leading to safety issues limit their commercialization. Here, we systematically investigate the influences of external magnetic field on electrochemical performances of oxide SEs. It reveals that the magnetic field can improve ionic conductivity of SEs and the cycle performance in Li symmetric cells. The enhanced performance is because the magnetohydrodynamics effect can promote diffusion in SEs and homogenize distribution of lithium deposition to avoid the propagation of lithium dendrite. The growing integration of renewable energy sources, especially the residential photovoltaic (PV) systems, in the distribution networks (DNs) aggravates the ramp-events in transmission system. To address this issue, we propose a novel look ahead dispatch model for the ramp minimization in DNs using distributed energy storage systems (ESSs). The dispatch problem considering the scheduling of ESSs is modeled as a finite-horizon optimization problem and is carried out using model predictive control (MPC) method that takes both current and future information into account. In addition, the optimal power flow in DN is formulated as a second-order cone programing problem to guarantee the global optimality. Numerical results on IEEE 37-bus distribution network show that our proposed model not only brings about 74% reduction of maximum ramp but also yields the near-minimum system operating cost. The integration of renewables is fast-growing, in light of smart grid technology development. As a result, the uncertain nature of renewables and load demand poses significant technical challenges to distribution network (DN) daily operation. To alleviate such issues, price-sensitive demand response and distributed generators can be coordinated to accommodate the renewable energy. However, the investment cost for demand response facilities, i.e., load control switch and advanced metering infrastructure, cannot be ignored, especially when the responsive demand is large. In this paper, an optimal coordinated investment for distributed generator and demand response facilities is proposed, based on a linearized, price-elastic demand response model. To hedge against the uncertainties of renewables and load demand, a two-stage robust investment scheme is proposed, where the investment decisions are optimized in the first stage, and the demand response participation with the coordination of distributed generators is adjusted in the second stage. [Display omitted] • Solvent-free strategy was developed to synthesize porous carbon (MIC x) doped with rich Faradaic active oxygen (5.8–8.2 atom%). • The resultant MICx owns surface area of 326–427 m2/g and large packing density of 1.12–1.28 g/cm3. • The MICx based electrode achieves superior supercapacitor performances with both high gravimetric and volumetric performances. In the selection of carbon-based electrode materials for supercapacitive energy storage, it is hard to get one that is high in both gravimetric and volumetric performance because there is a trade-off between them. In the presented work, microporous carbon materials denoted herein as MIC x were synthesized through catechol polymerization in the presence of molten FeCl 3. As complexing agent, the iron species coordinate with catechol oligomers, functioning as template as well as catalyst in the synthesis of the microporous carbon. The in situ formation of micropores and carbonaceous skeleton is induced by the carbonyl/hydroxyl redox pairs upon catalytic graphitization during carbonization. The derived nanocarbons have high microporosity (70.6 %–79.2 %) and rich oxygenate functionalities (carbonyl: 3.3–4.0 atom% and hydroxyl: 2.5–4.2 atom%). The FeC x materials are high in faradaic activity. For example, the FeC873-based electrode displays excellent supercapacitor performances: capacitance of 440F/g@1.0 A/g (equivalent to 537F/cm3@1.0 A/g) and 289F/g@20 A/g (equivalent to 353F/cm3@20 A/g), large energy density of 25.5 Wh/kg@900 W/kg (equivalent to 31.1 Wh/L@1098 W/L), and good cycling stability (ca.100 % capacitance retention after 20 000 continual charge/discharge cycles). Clean production of activated carbon from household expired food provide an alternative way to get value-added product thus benefits waste reutilization and environmental protection. Herein, we fabricated N, O co-doped activated carbons (HCDC) from expired coffee to by a green route of direct water vapor carbonization/activation approach. In our approach, the expired coffee was firstly grinded and then carbonized under water vapor atmosphere. The derived HCDC owns low surface area (172–184 m2/g), large packing density (1.81–1.83 cm3/g), rich redox-active nitrogen (4.5 atom%) and oxygenic (12.0 atom%) functionalities. As electrode for supercapacitor, the HCDC achieves a high gravimetric capacitance of 312F/g at 1.0 A/g (vs 258F/g of commercial AC) and the value can be maintained 223F/g at 20 A/g, showing a high rate capability of 71.5%. Particularly, because of the large packing density, the HCDC exhibits an excellent volumetric supercapacitor performances: ultrahigh volumetric capacitance of 567F/cm3 (vs 165F/cm3 of commercial AC) and large energy density of 27.8 Wh/L@1820 W/L (vs 7.5 Wh/L@576 W/L for commercial AC) and superlong cycling stability with near 100 capacitance retention after continual 30 000 cycles at large current density of 9.0 A/g, suggesting a promising application for practical energy storage devices. Marine hydrokinetic power generation is a relatively new type of renewable generation. Its predecessors, such as wind power generation, hydropower plant generation, geothermal generation, photovoltaic generation, and solar thermal generation, have gained a lot of attention because of their successful implementation. The successful integration of renewable generation into the electric power grid has energized the power system global communities to take the lessons learned, innovations, and market structure to focus on the large potential of marine hydrokinetic to also contribute to the pool of renewable energy generation. This article covers the broad spectrum of marine hydrokinetic generation. The state of the art of power take-off will be discussed. Carbon-based electrodes are usually poor in volumetric supercapacitor performance in terms of volumetric capacitance (<200 F/cm3) and energy density (usually <10 Wh/L) resulted from low packing density. Herein, we propose a strategy for the preparation of nanocarbon electrodes that are ultrahigh in volumetric supercapacitor performance by creating nanocarbon with high packing density and rich pseudocapacitive nitrogen doping, in which the nitrogen doping is to provide extra capacitance. The derived nanocarbons (ZHNCs) have not only large packing density of 1.14–1.49 g/cm3 and rich nitrogen content (12.3–24.8 atom%), but also homogeneous element distribution. Benefited from the synergetic effect of the above characteristics, the ZHNCs-based electrodes exhibit superior volumetric performances of ultrahigh capacitance of 528 F/cm3 in 1.0 M H 2 SO 4 and 465 F/cm3 in 6.0 M KOH, large energy density of 26.8 Wh/L at 2682 W/L, and impressive cycling stability with about 95% capacitance retention after continual charge/discharge of 20 000 cycles at current density of 20 A/g, indicative of potential applications in the fields of energy storage. This study aims to optimize the fabrication parameters of nickel‑iron phosphate (NiFe-P) electrode to achieve a high areal capacity electrode for supercapattery. The fabrication of binder-free NiFe-P electrode on nickel foam (NF) employs a one-step hydrothermal synthesis method. Further, central composite design (CCD) under the response surface methodology (RSM) is used to optimize the electrode's performance. The factors evaluated are synthesis temperature (60 to 180 °C), time (6 to 24 h), and the molar ratio of precursor solution (1:3, 1:1, 3:1 of Fe: Ni), whereas the response is the areal capacity of NiFe-P electrode at the scan rate of 3 mV/s in a standard three-electrode cell system. The optimal temperature, time, and molar ratio (Fe:Ni) are determined to be 100 °C, 14 h, and 3:1, respectively. The model is confirmed within the confidence interval and prediction as well as comparable with a 10% percentage error between the experimental and predicted specific capacity. The specific capacity of the optimized electrode is 446 C/g at a scan rate of 3 mV/s using cyclic voltammetry (CV) and 413.75 C/g at a current density of 1 A/g in 1 M KOH using a standard three-electrode cell system. Supercapattery is fabricated by combining NiFe-P and activated carbon electrodes (NiFe-P//AC) as positive and negative electrodes, respectively, to evaluate the two-electrode cell system. The results show the maximum power density of NiFe-P//AC supercapattery is 2250 W/kg at an energy density of 45.6 Wh/kg. To counterbalance the significant challenges imposed by renewable distributed generations penetration, this paper discusses the need of distributed energy storage system investment in distribution networks and proposes a robust optimization based storage investment model. The operational constraints of distribution network (e.g., voltage profile and substation capacity limitation) and storage device (e.g., state of energy and charging/discharging limit) are considered to guarantee the technical operation requirements. The proposed model is mathematically formulated as a two‐stage robust optimization with uncertainty of renewable distributed generator that is quantified by a polyhedral uncertainty set. The investment‐decision variables are optimized in the first stage, and the feasibility in the real‐time worst‐case scenario is checked in the second stage. A column‐and‐constraint generation (C&CG) algorithm and the big‐M linearization method are employed to solve the associated optimization problem. Herein, we reported an all-solid-state synthesis strategy by mixing glucose and graphitic carbon nitride (g -C 3 N 4) by milling and then undergoing a segmented carbonization in which first at low temperature of 573 K to polymerize sucrose onto g -C 3 N 4 , then at high temperature of 973 K to carbonized the composite to obtain a porous carbon (denoted as GNC) with abundant nitrogen species over 20 atom% and large packing density (0.91–1.25 g cm−3). Due to the features of large packing density and rich electrochemically-active N species, as electrode for supercapacitive energy storage, the developed GNC exhibit a comparable energy storage level with both high gravimetric energy density of 26.8 Wh kg−1@1000 W kg−1 and volumetric energy density of 30.8 Wh L−1@1150 W L−1, suggesting a potentiality in energy storage field. Single crystalline tellurium (Te) nanotubes grown on carbon fiber cloth (Te/CFC) conductive substrates have been prepared by a chemical vapor deposition (CVD), which are used as the cathode for flexible all-solid-state lithium-tellurium (Li-Te) rechargeable batteries with high safety. To refrain from the dissolution of Te nanotubes in carbonate electrolytic solution and enhance the long-term security of Li-Te batteries, we directly assemble Te/CFC cathode, polymer solid electrolyte and Li metal anode into flexible all-solid-state Li-Te batteries with the sandwich structure, without using any ancillary materials. The solvent-free feature and high conductivity of Te nanotubes grown on carbon substrate endow the excellent electrochemical performance and long-term security of Li-Te batteries. A high gravimetric capacity of 316 mA h g −1 and a volumetric capacity of 1979 mA h cm −3 after 500 cycles at a current density of 100 mA g −1 can be obtained, respectively. It also exhibits excellent rate capabilities for Li-Te batteries, which is attributed to the synergetic effect from integrated structure of electrodes and solvent-free solid-state electrolyte. These results demonstrate that flexible all-solid-state Li-Te rechargeable batteries based on Te/CFC cathode show promising applications in safe energy storage and portable electronic devices. The durability of proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells is a key factor which prevents its commercial application on the vehicle. Dynamic current cycle is one of the most common conditions for PEM fuel cells, especially varying the currents between the idling and the rated condition. To investigate the degradation behavior of fuel cells under this kind of dynamic cycles, a PEM fuel cell stack with 330 cm 2 active area is operated under 10,000 dynamic cycles with the cycling current density ranging from 25 mAcm −2 to 600 mAcm −2 , which simulates common operating conditions in a vehicle cycle from the idling condition to the rated condition. Polarization curves, the high-frequency resistance (HFR), the uniformity of the individual cells, the performance degradation of PEM fuel cell stack at 25 mAcm −2 and 600 mAcm −2 are characterized to investigate the performance degradation over cycling. In addition, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of the surface and the cross-section of the tested membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs) are compared with different single-cell samples. The results indicate that the degradation rate of the stack is 1.0 μVcycle −1 at 25 mAcm −2 under the idling condition. A more severe performance degradation of about 2.0 μVcycle −1 is detected at 600 mAcm −2 under the rated condition. The individual cell near the coolant outlet of the PEM fuel cell stack shows a more serious degradation caused by the HFR increase, which is also proved by the SEM analysis. The cross-section SEM analysis indicates that the dynamic cycle has a significantly negative effect on the catalyst layer, resulted in an obvious decrease on the thickness of the catalyst layer. As an industrial material for supercapacitive energy storage, commercial activated carbons (AC) could achieve a satisfactory gravimetric performances by electric double layered capacitance (EDLC) due to their rich microporosity, but the volumetric performances are usually poor resulted from the low packing density. Herein, we presented a strategy to address this tradeoff relationship and to achieve both high gravimetric and volumetric performance by filling the macro/mesoporosity with extra nitrogen doped carbon. The reconstructed activated carbon could inherit most of microporosity from the parent AC, while the macro/mesoporosity of them was greatly decreased, resulting in increase of packing density and the improvement of surface hydrophilicity. Benefited from the increase of packing density and maintenance of microporosity, the resultant activated carbon achieves greatly enhanced energy storage level including three times higher capacitance of 384 F cm−3@ 1.0 A/g (vs 128 F cm−3@ 1.0 A/g for pristine AC), high rate capability of 73.4% (vs 59.2% for pristine AC), larger energy density of 27.5 Wh L−1@ 900 W L−1 (vs 10.0 Wh L−1@747 W L−1). Importantly, the present strategy provides a facile and unique method to process activated carbon, which offers a possibility improving the energy storage level of the commercial activated carbon. We develop interactive ternary metal oxides nano-ribbon electrodes used to assemble symmetric supercapacitor. The well-aligned vanadium oxide ribbon arrays act as the matrix, growing from nickel oxide/nickel substrate and then being grafted by manganese oxide nanoparticles. These tri-metallic oxides are formed in a cost-effective and green hydrothermal chemistry. The electrodes composed of ribbon arrays retain their crystallographic structure during charging and discharging processes, enabling steadiness at 83.6 % after 10,000 cycles. These as-prepared electrodes demonstrate a specific capacitance of 788 F g−1 at 5 mV s−1. The symmetrical supercapacitors are assembled using triple component electrodes, achieving a high energy density of 138 W h kg−1 at a power density of 450 W kg−1. These binderless single-cell devices are reported with a simplified design showing 10–20 times higher energy density in comparison with reported results of the V 2 O 5 -MnO 2 system.
