Soft X-ray imaging is a powerful tool to explore the structure of cells, probe material with nanometer resolution, and investigate the energetic phenomena in the universe. Conventional soft X-ray image sensors are by and large Si-based charge coupled devices that suffer from low frame rates, complex fabrication processes, mechanical inflexibility, and required cooling below -60 °C. Here, a soft X-ray photodiode is reported based on low-cost metal halide perovskite with comparable performance to commercial Si-based device. Nanothrough network electrode minimized the optical loss due to the shadowing of insensitive layers, while a multidimensional perovskite heterojunction is generated to reduce the photo-generated carrier loss. This strategy promoted a record quantum efficiency of 8 × 103% without cooling, several orders of magnitude greater than the previously achieved. Flexible and curved soft X-ray imaging arrays are fabricated based on this high-performance device structure, demonstrating stable soft X-ray response and sharp imaging capabilities. This work highlights the low-cost and efficient perovskite photodiode as a strong candidate for the next-generation soft X-ray image sensors.

High-quality perovskite films are essential for achieving high performance of optoelectronic devices; However, solution-processed perovskite films are known to suffer from compositional and structural inhomogeneity due to lack of systematic control over the kinetics during the formation. Here, the microscopic homogeneity of perovskite films is successfully enhanced by modulating the conversion reaction kinetics using a catalyst-like system generated by a foaming agent. The chemical and structural evolution during this catalytic conversion is revealed by a multimodal synchrotron toolkit with spatial resolutions spanning many length scales. Combining these insights with computational investigations, a cyclic conversion pathway model is developed that yields exceptional perovskite homogeneity due to enhanced conversion, having a power conversion efficiency of 24.51% for photovoltaic devices. This work establishes a systematic link between processing of precursor and homogeneity of the perovskite films.

There exists a considerable density of interaggregate grain boundaries (GBs) and intra-aggregate GBs in polycrystalline perovskites. Mitigation of intra-aggregate GBs is equally notable to that of interaggregate GBs as intra-aggregate GBs can also cause detrimental effects on the photovoltaic performances of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Here, we demonstrate full-scale GB mitigation ranging from nanoscale intra-aggregate to submicron-scale interaggregate GBs, by modulating the crystallization kinetics using a judiciously designed brominated arylamine trimer. The optimized GB-mitigated perovskite films exhibit reduced nonradiative recombination, and their corresponding mesostructured PSCs show substantially enhanced device efficiency and long-term stability under illumination, humidity, or heat stress. The versatility of our strategy is also verified upon applying it to different categories of PSCs. Our discovery not only specifies a rarely addressed perspective concerning fundamental studies of perovskites at nanoscale but also opens a route to obtain high-quality solution-processed polycrystalline perovskites for high-performance optoelectronic devices.

With the recent development of non-fullerene acceptors, power conversion efficiencies of bulk-heterojunction organic solar cells have exceeded 18%. The morphology of the BHJ active layer, including packing, ordering, orientation, and phase behavior of the donor(s) and acceptor(s), plays critical roles in determining the device performance. We characterized the morphology of active layers consisting of mixtures of a PTB7/PTB7-Th (donor) and ITIC (acceptor) using grazing incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering, resonant soft X-ray scattering, and solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (ssNMR) to correlate the morphology with device performance. PTB7-Th/ITIC shows a better device performance than that of PTB7/ITIC due to a smaller π-πstacking distance and smaller domain size of the phase separated morphology. One of PTB7/ITIC samples, processed from mixed solvents (chlorobenzene/benzene = 1:1 by volume), shows a possible partial miscibility and smaller domain size as revealed by ssNMR T1ρ relaxation times, which is detrimental to device performance. ssNMR results showed that ITIC could crystallize into different forms depending on processing conditions, which may have implications on the manufacturing of devices using it as an ingredient, as well as its long-term stability in service.

A pre-formed Meisenheimer complex of a naphthalenediimide (NDI) with tetrabutylammonium fluoride (TBAF) is obtained in a simple way by mixing dibrominated 4,9-dibromo-2,7-bis(2-octyldodecyl)benzo[lmn][3,8]phenanthroline-1,3,6,8(2H,7H)-tetraone and TBAF in solution and used as a dopant for n-type organic thermoelectrics. Two n-type polymers PNDIClTVT and PBDOPVTT are synthesized, n-doped, and characterized as conductive and thermoelectric materials. PNDIClTVT doped with NDI-TBAF presents a high σ value of 0.20 S cm–1, a Seebeck coefficient (S) of −1854 µV K–1, and a power factor (PF) of 67 µW m–1 K–2, among the highest reported PF in solution-processed conjugated n-type polymer thermoelectrics. Using 4-(1,3-dimethyl-2,3-dihydro-1H-benzoimidazol-2-yl)phenyl)dimethylamine and NDI-TBAF as co-dopants, PNDIClTVT has a PF > 35 µW m–1 K–2; while for PBDOPVTT σ = 0.75 S cm–1 and PF = 58 µW m–1 K–2. In this study it is found that an ionic adduct together with a neutral dopant improves the performance of n-type organic thermoelectrics leading to an enhanced power factor, and more generally, the role of such an adduct in polymer doping is also elucidated.

Additive processing is proven to be an effective method to improve the efficiency and stability of perovskite solar cells; however, its intrinsic role in directing the crystallization pathway and thus morphology formation remains unknown. In situ grazing-incidence wide-angle x-ray scattering (GIWAXS) is applied to study the function of a 1,8-diiodooctane (DIO) additive in manipulating the crystallization behavior of perovskite thin films. It is seen that the DIO additive could induce multi-stage intermediate crystallization phases and increases the activation energy for nucleation and growth, which postpones the perovskite phase transformation time and broadens the transition zone. The elongated crystallization process affords improved perovskite thin film crystallinity and reduces defect density, which enables a longer carrier diffusion length. As a result, improved device efficiency, moisture, and thermal stability can be achieved. The current study provides a new prospective in understanding the additive function in perovskite thin film morphology control from fundamental parameters, indicating the importance of minor processing conditions in global property management toward high device performance.

Understanding the fundamental properties of buried interfaces in perovskite photovoltaics is of paramount importance to the enhancement of device efficiency and stability. Nevertheless, accessing buried interfaces poses a sizeable challenge because of their non-exposed feature. Herein, the mystery of the buried interface in full device stacks is deciphered by combining advanced in situ spectroscopy techniques with a facile lift-off strategy. By establishing the microstructure-property relations, the basic losses at the contact interfaces are systematically presented, and it is found that the buried interface losses induced by both the sub-microscale extended imperfections and lead-halide inhomogeneities are major roadblocks toward improvement of device performance. The losses can be considerably mitigated by the use of a passivation-molecule-assisted microstructural reconstruction, which unlocks the full potential for improving device performance. The findings open a new avenue to understanding performance losses and thus the design of new passivation strategies to remove imperfections at the top surfaces and buried interfaces of perovskite photovoltaics, resulting in substantial enhancement in device performance.

The performance of perovskite photovoltaics is fundamentally impeded by the presence of undesirable defects that contribute to non-radiative losses within the devices. Although mitigating these losses has been extensively reported by numerous passivation strategies, a detailed understanding of loss origins within the devices remains elusive. Here, we demonstrate that the defect capturing probability estimated by the capture cross-section is decreased by varying the dielectric response, producing the dielectric screening effect in the perovskite. The resulting perovskites also show reduced surface recombination and a weaker electron-phonon coupling. All of these boost the power conversion efficiency to 22.3% for an inverted perovskite photovoltaic device with a high open-circuit voltage of 1.25 V and a low voltage deficit of 0.37 V (a bandgap ~1.62 eV). Our results provide not only an in-depth understanding of the carrier capture processes in perovskites, but also a promising pathway for realizing highly efficient devices via dielectric regulation.

The chemical structure of donors and acceptors limit the power conversion efficiencies achievable with active layers of binary donor-acceptor mixtures. Here, using quaternary blends, double cascading energy level alignment in bulk heterojunction organic photovoltaic active layers are realized, enabling efficient carrier splitting and transport. Numerous avenues to optimize light absorption, carrier transport, and charge-transfer state energy levels are opened by the chemical constitution of the components. Record-breaking PCEs of 18.07% are achieved where, by electronic structure and morphology optimization, simultaneous improvements of the open-circuit voltage, short-circuit current and fill factor occur. The donor and acceptor chemical structures afford control over electronic structure and charge-transfer state energy levels, enabling manipulation of hole-transfer rates, carrier transport, and non-radiative recombination losses.

We report a "one-step" method for preparing conductive thin films with cylindrical microdomains oriented normal to the surface over large areas using the supramolecular assembly of poly(styrene-block-4-vinylpyridine) (PS19-b-P4VP5) and 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-hydroxyphenyl)-21H,23H-porphine (HOTPP). HOTPP interacts with the P4VP block by hydrogen bonding between the hydroxyl group of HOTPP and pyridine ring of PS19-b-P4VP5, forming cylindrical P4VP(HOTPP) domains having an average diameter of ∼17 nm in a PS matrix. Dynamic light scattering, contact angle, and in situ grazing incidence small-angle X-ray scattering measurements show a morphological transition from spherical micelles in solution to cylindrical microdomains oriented normal to the substrate surface during the drying process. From the dependence of current on voltage, an average current of ∼4.0 nA is found to pass through a single microdomain, pointing to a promising route for organic semiconductor device applications.

We designed and synthesized a series of fused-ring electron acceptors (FREAs) based on naphthalene-fused octacyclic cores end-capped by 3-(1,1-dicyanomethylene)-5,6-difluoro-1- indanone (NOICs) using a bottom-up approach. The NOIC series shares the same end groups and side chains, as well as similar fused-ring cores. The butterfly effects, arising from different methoxy positions in the starting materials, impact the design of the final FREAs, as well as their molecular packing, optical and electronic properties, charge transport, film morphology, and performance of organic solar cells. The binary-blend devices based on this NOIC series show power conversion efficiencies varying from 7.15% to 14.1%, due to the different intrinsic properties of the NOIC series, morphologies of blend films, and voltage losses of devices.

2D perovskite solar cells with high stability and high efficiency have attracted significant attention. A systematical static and dynamic structure investigation is carried out to show the details of 2D morphology evolution. A dual additive approach is used, where the synergy between an alkali metal cation and a polar solvent leads to high-quality 2D perovskite films with sandwich-type structures and vertical phase segregation. Such novel structure can induce high-quality 2D slab growth and reduce internal and surface defects, resulting in a high device efficiency of 16.48% with enhanced continuous illumination stability and improved moisture (55-60%) and thermal (85 °C) tolerances. Transient absorption spectra reveal the carrier migration from low n to high n species with different kinetics. An [PbI6 ]4- octagon coalescence transformation mechanism coupled with metal and organic cations wrapped is proposed. By solvent vapor annealing, a recrystallization and reorientation of the 2D perovskite slabs occurs to form an ideal structure with improved device performance and stability.

Simultaneously improving device efficiency and stability is the most important issue in perovskite solar cell (PSC) research. Here, we strategically introduce a multi-functional interface layer (MFIL) with integrated roles of: (1) electron transport, (2) moisture barrier, (3) near-infrared photocurrent enhancement, (4) trap passivation, and (5) ion migration suppression to enhance the device performance. The narrow-band-gap non-fullerene acceptor, Y6, was screened out to replace the most commonly used PCBM in the inverted PSCs. A significantly improved power conversion efficiency of 21.0% was achieved, along with a remarkable stability (up to 1,700 h) without encapsulation under various external stimuli (light, heat, and moisture). Furthermore, systematic studies of the molecular orientation or passivation and the charge carrier dynamics at the interface between perovskite and MFIL were presented. These results offer deep insights for designing advanced interlayers and establish the correlations between molecular orientation, interface molecular bonding, trap state density, non-radiation recombination, and the device performance.

Three fused-ring electron acceptors (FXIC-1, FXIC-2, and FXIC-3) were designed and synthesized. This FXIC series has similar electron-rich central units and the same electron-poor termini. Due to the different steric structures of fluorene, bifluorenylidene, and spirobifluorene, FXIC-1 is a one-dimensional (1D) crystal, while FXIC-2 and FXIC-3 are multidimensional (MD) amorphous materials. The conformations of the FXIC series have a slight impact on their absorption and energy levels. FXIC-1 has higher electron mobility than FXIC-2 and FXIC-3. When blending with different polymer donors (PTB7-Th, J71, and PM7), the FXIC-1-based organic solar cells have efficiencies higher than those of the FXIC-2/FXIC-3-based cells. Meanwhile, the ternary-blend cells based on PTB7-Th:F8IC with FXIC-1, FXIC-2, and FXIC-3 show similar efficiencies, which are all better than those of the binary-blend devices.

Two-dimensional (2D) organic-inorganic (hybrid) perovskites are considered promising candidates to replace conventional three-dimensional (3D) perovskites for solar cell applications as they have good resistance against moisture and UV light. However, the use of 2D perovskite is associated with a significant decrease in power efficiency resulting from their low photogenerated charge carrier density and poor charge transport. To improve power efficiency in 2D perovskites, highly crystalline films (near-single-crystal quality) of 2D perovskite need to be synthesized where the alignment of the inorganic perovskite components is controlled to have vertical alignment with respect to the contacts to improve charge transport. In this work, we explored strategies to overcome this limitation by integrating 2D perovskite with single-walled carbon nanotubes or graphene to enable more efficient extraction of charge carriers toward electric contacts. Longer carrier lifetimes were achieved after the incorporation of the carbon nanostructures in the films, and at the cell level, power efficiency increased by 2-fold.

Ternary structure is an important design strategy to obtain high-efficiency non-fullerene organic photovoltaics (OPVs). However, the role of the third component to the standard binary system is still unclear. Here, a wide-bandgap small-molecule acceptor, denoted IDT-T, is synthesized and used together with a wide-bandgap donor polymer, PBDB-T, and a low-bandgap acceptor, ITIC, for fullerene-free ternary solar cells. The ternary cell features an enhanced power conversion efficiency (PCE) up to 12.2%, together with improved photocurrent density, open-circuit voltage (VOC), and fill factor. Studies of the thin films indicate that IDT-T functions as an energy-level mediator, a fluorescence resonance energy-transfer donor, an electron acceptor, and a crystallization modulator in the blend, which contribute synergistically in the ternary blend to deliver a higher VOC, more efficient exciton generation, suppressed bimolecular charge recombination and enhanced charge transport, and an overall high photovoltaic performance. Very recently, non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs) based on low-bandgap small molecules have emerged as a new class of acceptors that rival the dominance of fullerene-based acceptors. Such discovery also stimulates promising device architectures such as ternary solar cells, with a handful that have achieved high power conversion efficiencies above 12%. The primary effort, however, has been focusing on low-bandgap NFAs that exploit complementary absorption and energy-level cascade. Herein we report a rare example of a wide-bandgap NFA that leads to high-performance ternary solar cells without relying on full absorption complementarity of all three components. Detailed studies revealed the multiple roles of this acceptor in blend films, which contribute synergistically to improved device characteristics. This work may inspire new design principles of potent wide-bandgap NFAs, which will open the door to high-efficiency organic photovoltaic devices through new opportunities such as multi-component solar cells. The marriage of non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs) and ternary solar cell architecture has brought about great advances in organic photovoltaics. The primary effort, however, has been focusing on low-bandgap NFAs that exploit complementary absorption and energy-level cascade. Here we report a wide-bandgap NFA IDT-T that functions as an energy-level mediator, a fluorescence resonance energy-transfer donor, an electron acceptor, and a crystallization modulator, which contribute synergistically in a ternary blend to yield high organic photovoltaic device performance.

A novel donor-acceptor type conjugated polymer based on a building block of 4,8-di(thien-2-yl)-6-octyl-2-octyl-5H-pyrrolo[3,4-f]benzotriazole-5,7(6H)-dione (TZBI) as the acceptor unit and 4,8-bis(5-(2-ethylhexyl)thiophen-2-yl)-benzo-[1,2-b:4,5-b']dithiophene as the donor unit, named as PTZBIBDT, is developed and used as an electron-donating material in bulk-heterojunction polymer solar cells. The resulting copolymer exhibits a wide bandgap of 1.81 eV along with relatively deep highest occupied molecular orbital energy level of -5.34 eV. Based on the optimized processing conditions, including thermal annealing, and the use of a water/alcohol cathode interlayer, the single-junction polymer solar cell based on PTZBIBDT:PC71BM ([6,6]-phenyl-C71-butyric acid methyl ester) blend film affords a power conversion efficiency of 8.63% with an open-circuit voltage of 0.87 V, a short circuit current of 13.50 mA cm-2, and a fill factor of 73.95%, which is among the highest values reported for wide-bandgap polymers-based single-junction organic solar cells. The morphology studies on the PTZBIBDT:PC71BM blend film indicate that a fibrillar network can be formed and the extent of phase separation can be mani-pulated by thermal annealing. These results indicate that the TZBI unit is a very promising building block for the synthesis of wide-bandgap polymers for high-performance single-junction and tandem (or multijunction) organic solar cells.
