Information modeling technology also known as BIM is becoming an important part of working with data in various fields of activity. At the same time, there are still no specific recommendations for the transition to the use of digital models at the survey stage. Although engineering survey data is the basis for further actions within the life cycle of objects. The article characterizes the methodology for the modernization of engineering surveys in the context of information modeling, operating with the methods of systems analysis, foresight research and risk management. The combination of these methods allows you to identify ways of development and characterize them. All changes in the engineering survey system are described using the example of the engineering and environmental section. This is due to the fact that environmental engineering surveys use information from other sections of the survey and show reactions to changes in the system. The authors believe that under existing conditions, the most effective direction is the presentation of the results of engineering surveys in a standard form, provided that they are supplemented with a set of digital models by type of survey. In this case, it is assumed that the role of information modeling will gradually increase.

This paper presents a comparative approach between a digital documentation workflow using contemporary tools versus a traditional documentation technique for Felix Candela's hyperbolic paraboloid (hypar) modern heritage building: Cosmic Rays Pavilion. This documentation was undertaken to better understand the building’s structure, its evolution, and to assess the performance of this concrete structure for future seismic and damage analysis. Furthermore, the paper discusses the challenges related to producing a Heritage Building Information Model (HBIM) of this building using point cloud data in Autodesk’s Revit BIM-authoring software. This project states the importance of a parallel study between the traditional and the contemporary documentation methods; which led to discoveries about the current state of the extrados in the hypar after several earthquakes. Upon analyzing the HBIM and comparing it to the historical drawings, a gap was discovered between the moisture barrier membrane and the concrete shell. Visualizing the building in 3D provides a deeper and more accurate understanding of the current state of this pavilion and is one of many advantages of using digital technologies. The insights provided by digital documentation techniques and analyzing the historical images of the pavilion showed that the curvature of the pavilion has been modified over time. The results imply two hypotheses. First, the curvature profile has been altered due to earthquakes. Second, the modification is due to improper maintenance of the pavilion, namely, multiple additions of the membrane layers. This could not have been detected by solely relying on traditional documentation techniques.

The development of the construction industry of Ukraine as a basis for economic transformations through the introduction of information technology (IT), put forward appropriate requirements for specialists. There is a need at the state level to solve the problem of need and development in the labor market of competencies of specialists for the construction industry in the implementation of VIM technologies, creating a single information model in the construction of Ukraine, which would combine architectural, design, engineering, cost, ecological components with access to cost-effective decision-making for the life cycle of the object and, accordingly, the introduction of innovative technologies in the education and training of competent professionals.

In the rapid development of modern cities, the construction of green low-car- bon livable cities and the realization of energy-saving and beautification of buildings are now being strongly promoted and havebecome an important indicator of urban development. With the implementation of green building and BIM technology, the combination of BIM technology with green building is a new momentum in the development of the construction industry. The application of BIM can make the quantitative management of green buildings in the whole life cycle, get rid of the shackles of traditional models, make the design and construction process more accurate, and also make the whole process of green buildings more standardized. Among them, the core of BIM is the information model, and the core of green building is: low energy consumption, green and sustainable. This paper firstly explains the concepts and advantages of BIM technology and green building, and separately elaborates the significance of using both in the construction field. Secondly, the current development status of BIM technology and green building is obtained by studying and analyzing the development status and connection between them. Finally, combining BIM technology in the whole life cycle of green building, analyzing the current situation and advantages and disadvantages of using the combination of green building and BIM in actual engineering, clarifying the importance of using BIM in the whole life cycle of green building, and highlighting the combination of BIM technology and the whole life cycle of green building as an important tool for the future development of the construction industry.

The article analyses the general problems of implementing BIM technologies in the construction industry of the Russian Federation. The paper determines the influence of the concept of scientific and technological progress on the development of information modeling in construction. The author reflects the concept of BIM modeling in the economic sphere. The study considers the stages of implementation and problems of adoption of innovative technologies in construction. The author suggests ways out of the current practice of organizing mutual relations between participants in the construction process.The article considers the fundamental and key aspects of the processes of domestic development of information design programs in the construction sector and in the Russian economy as a whole. The paper reflects the influence of foreign initiative and foreign funding in the functionality of information design software utilities. The study reflects the impact of the introduction of information BIM technologies in the construction processes at various stages of the investment project development: from development and design to commissioning, subsequent use and, if necessary, demolition of the object. The author presents arguments that justify the need to develop BIM modeling in the construction processes in Russia.The paper gives a modern interpretation of the concept of information modeling in construction on the territory of the Russian Federation. The author supposes that it is not necessary to introduce information BIM modeling in Russia at all acceptable scales (volumes) of its technological development abroad. The article discusses methodologies that allow to describe and visualize various business processes, their study and obtaining answers to questions of interest. This is necessary for a visual representation of technological processes and the search for ways to increase their efficiency. For the successful implementation of information systems, the design model must be carefully described; information models of information systems must be built. Without the use of any information technology, the design of objects is carried out on an intuitive level, using practical design skills. Using the methods of visual presentation of information, give a visual representation of the information modeling of the workstation of a sawmill technologist. This involves the construction of structural diagrams, the ability to build diagrams using color schemes, diagrams allow you to test at different levels and determine cyclic elements. CASE-technologies allow you to quickly and clearly develop an information model of any complexity and any depth of detail of the project. CASE tools for developing an information model apply diagrams at various levels. Information modeling of the automated workplace of a sawmill technologist is intended to carry out a set of measures aimed at organizing the technological process of a sawmill for the production of edged and unedged sawn timber.

Built Heritage is a significant division of cultural heritage. Thanks to their economic, symbolic, social, and cultural values, Built Heritage performs an essential task in achieving cultural distinction and promoting local identity. The paper focuses on the growing role of HBIM in the field of the Built Heritage due to the benefits of BIM systems, which are characterized by the creation of digital information models with multi-dimensions. These dimensions give HBIM an essential task in the representation of Built Heritage that defined by multi-criteria. The study seeks to determine the approaches of utilizing BIM techniques in the Built Heritage area to classify the current trends of the studies that dealt with the research problem. Also, it aims to analyse HBIM techniques that employed in the discipline of Built Heritage, highlighting the procedures and methods used in these studies and researches, underlining the integration of HBIM with other technologies (e.g. Virtual Reality-VR, Augmented Reality-AR, Artificial Intelligence techniques -AI), and determining the potential of the HBIM system in these fields. The research is established on academic studies and researches analyses that have adopted the HBIM system in the sector of the Built Heritage to present a set of conclusions for current and future use of this technology.

The ways of implementing the basic principles of «lean production» at certain stages of shipbuilding production and throughout the entire life cycle of shipbuilding products are considered. The article describes the main losses that occur at the production stage, as well as ways to improve shipbuilding production and directions for solving some problems of minimizing losses in relation to enterprises in the shipbuilding industry. The authors present an example of using CALS technologies in the process of production management, designing marine engineering facilities, communication between individual design organizations and the shipbuilding enterprise when creating complex projects; as well as ways to implement this task as the most promising in the world practice. The main purpose of using CALS in shipbuilding at all stages of the life cycle of a shipbuilding product is to create a unified information model, standardize the main methods for obtaining, storing and interpreting information, protect, certify and license the information used at all stages of the life cycle of shipbuilding products using computer-aided design systems. The article describes the main goals and directions of implementing CALS technologies as one of the stages of improving processes within the framework of the lean production concept. The ways of minimizing production losses in the development of planning and technological documentation and design and technological production preparation, production of working design documentation are considered. The purpose of creating a 3D ship model using volumetric scanning technology as a means of supporting the life cycle of marine equipment products at the stages of maintenance, repair and modernization is shown. The authors list the main ways to implement the assigned tasks at the shipbuilding enterprise, considering them from the point of view of implementing «lean production»; and the essential condition for its effective functioning is the joint use of CALS technologies at the enterprises of the shipbuilding industry, contractors and design organizations. The task of training and retraining specialists for the shipbuilding industry with appropriate professional competencies is outlined.

PurposeThe adoption of building information modelling (BIM) in managing built heritage is an exciting prospect, but one that presents complexities additional to those of modern buildings. If challenges can be identified and overcome, the adoption of historic BIM (HBIM) could offer efficiencies in how heritage buildings are managed.Design/methodology/approachUsing Durham Cathedral as a case study, we present the workflows applied to create an asset information model to improve the way this unique UNESCO World Heritage Site is managed, and in doing so, set out the challenges and complexities in achieving an HBIM solution.FindingsThis study identifies the need for a better understanding of the distinct needs and context for managing historic assets, and the need for heritage information requirements (HIR) that reflect this.Originality/valueThis study presents first-hand findings based on a unique application of BIM at Durham Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The study provides a better understanding of the challenges and drivers of HBIM adoption across the heritage sector and underlines the need for information requirements that are unique to historical buildings/assets to deliver a coherent and relevant HBIM approach.

Since 2017, the rural revitalization strategy has been one of China's seven significant strategies for comprehensively building a modern and powerful socialist country. It has brought new development ideas and a powerful force for the Chengdu area to achieve the five goals of reform and development in rural areas represented by Linpan in Sichuan Policy support. This Project takes the Yongxing Linpan development project as an example, and the Project aims to what application on the Linpan settlements revitalization by using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) looks like, in terms of the digital survey, the building information modeling (BIM) construction, site analysis, and planning effects rendering. Why do people use UAVs as digital survey vehicles? How could people create a landscape information model by combining point cloud data and BIM? Do point cloud data caught by UAVs enhance the effects of the planning? These questions go beyond the mere forms of the digital record and object visualization to provide a unique insight into the function of UAVs in Linpan development projects.

In the process of urban rail transit engineering construction, various advanced technologies will be applied, among which BIM technology has been widely used in various industries as a new technology, and has been effectively applied in urban rail transit engineering design. BIM is the building information model, which analyzes various data in engineering construction by using 3D digital model and puts forward corresponding decisions. BIM is based on the established 3D information model, which enables different participants from the project to exchange and share information in the whole life cycle of the project, thus greatly improving the production efficiency and engineering quality. The information integration of BIM Technology mainly embodies the integration of design process and design information. Based on the application of BIM Technology in urban rail transit engineering construction, this paper studies the application of BIM Technology in three-dimensional digital design of rail transit engineering, and provides some reference for the application of BIM Technology in rail transit engineering.

The civil construction industry is constantly improving its processes, products and services. Part of this improvement has been the application of a new technology to building planning, namely Building Information Modeling (BIM), a technology aimed at information modeling in civil construction throughout the building's life cycle. The domain of BIM has become indispensable to every professional trained in architecture and urbanism and civil engineering, as it operates interoperability and collaboration between professionals, requiring training in various tools and software that are structured within this concept. However, the adoption and implementation of the use of technology in institutions is an expensive, paradigm-shifting and gradual process. The technology implementation stages started to receivethe nomenclature of “BIM maturity levels”, starting to be attributed in order to measure and monitor a successful implementation in the full reach of what the technology offers. This research aims to study and understand what the concept of BIM maturity level is in the construction industry, when applied to the Collegeenvironment. For this purpose, a literature review will be carried out based on bibliographic surveys, articles, seminars and congress proceedings, which will help to determine the steps andfactors that should be taken into account to assign BIM maturity levels to Collegeof Architecture and Urbanism and Civil Engineering. The article identifies the trends and problems in the development of complex information modeling in construction industry. The role of the information modeling technology platform is shown. The author makes a conclusion that information modeling should be developed in the direction of joint use of BIM and GIS technologies. There is offered a definition of a complex information model (CIM) of an object, its composition is determined, as well as the procedure for forming and subsequent integrating into information and analytical systems (IAS) of higher levels, namely, IAS of construction management and IAS of real estate management. The author considers distribution and consolidation of rights of ownership and use of complex information models of objects, which are determined by the selected schemes of implementation of the investment and construction process. Examples of implementing the presented author's developments are given.

Introduction: The paper presents a methodology for reduction of expenses within investment projects aimed at the preservation and development of cultural heritage sites, based on the combined use of methods of scientific restoration, laser scanning and information modeling, as well as creation of a library of unique BIM elements of ancient city buildings, identified at protected sites of the urban environment, using restoration of a building in the Old Tatar Quarter (Staro-Tatarskaya Sloboda) in Kazan as an example. Methods: The authors performed standard (traditional) scientific restoration activities and innovative field studies using laser scanning and built a parametric information model of the cultural heritage site for further development of a restoration plan with account for site adaptation to modern functions. Results and discussion: Point cloud processing is carried out to create an information model and a library of unique BIM elements, which can be used repeatedly in restoration and reconstruction, thus reducing costs for BIM-model development in future investment projects. The practical significance of the study lies in the creation of a public good — a library (encyclopedia) of ancient architectural elements in the form of a library of BIM elements for BIM models of architectural and urban-planning landmarks in the region, as well as in the development of recommendations (by individuals, regional and local regulatory authorities) for an efficient policy in urban planning and restoration with regard to similar historical and cultural, architectural and urban-planning landmarks.

Building Information Modelling (BIM) is the latest software technology used widely by many construction businesses - big and small - particularly within the Architecture Engineering Construction (AEC) sector. Besides being a design and documentation tool, building information models (BIM) provide a platform for enhanced knowledge base collaboration, the potential to manage modification, and therefore the capability to provide information support throughout the lifecycle of an apartment building. A big share of the eastern European construction industries remains excluded from BIM technology and the potential advantages it will hand over to their business, particularly for renovation projects. It requies the involvement of all stakeholders to realize higher-level coordination, productivity, visualization and value efficiencies. The advantages of BIM exploitation for renovation projects are considered in the article. Tendencies in the development of BIM technologies throughout the globe and in eastern European countries on example of Ukraine are shown. Examples of the exploitation of local building information systems in realizing renovation processes are given, and proposals for policymakers in terms of applying BIM technologies in housing renovation activities and facility management are formulated.

Building Information Modeling for the conservation and maintenance of architectural and cultural heritage is a great scientific debate nowadays. The creation of an HBIM model allows managing the geometry of the building and exchanging information between the experts involved in the conservation of historic buildings. This paper fosters the creation of an as-built-HBIM containing detailed structural deformations, for which modeling processes with scarce presence in the scientific literature are required. In this sense, two modeling procedures for a structural HBIM Project are proposed for the Pavilion of Carlos V in the Real Alcazar in Seville, Spain. Research Highlights In this systematic review, we attempt to defend a view that the full potential of building information modelling (BIM) in enabling sustainable design and construction could transpire only through an in-depth understanding of every required component of BIM requirements across a construction project lifecycle. The findings from the study add to the body of literature by expanding the required components of BIM requirements through the amalgamation of variables that reside within the General Practitioners Information System (including IT infrastructure, process, people and environment) (Saleh and Alshawi, 2005) and the protocols for a BIM-collaborative design framework (including policy, process, and technology) (Kassem et al., 2014). The most striking result to emerge from the study is the process requirements of BIM. The fact that the accuracy and reliability of the information produced, shared, and reused across the construction project lifecycle may be affected without having a BIM process map and procedure for each of the BIM core activities being in place. Research Objectives Much of the discussion on BIM implementation centres on the required set of BIM requirements and specifications that should be delivered throughout a whole lifecycle of a project (Farzaneh, Monfet, & Forgues, 2019; Gao & Pishdad-Bozorgi, 2019; Ibrahim & Kingdom, 2013; Kamel & Memari, 2019; Parllaku & Underwood, 2017; Sacks, Gurevich, & Shrestha, 2016). Yet, very few studies have attempted to systematically review every aspect of BIM requirements from the perspective of policy, process, technology, environment and people-related interlocking pillars. The review by Farzaneh, Monfet, and Forgues (2019) and Kamel and Memari (2019) disregarded the legal and process aspects of BIM requirements and included only the technical requirements of BIM technology. In another review study, Sacks, Gurevich, and Shrestha (2016) drew conclusions from the review of BIM protocols, guides and standards and not from the existing emprical studies in supporting the emerging findings of BIM requirements obtained through the BIM-based documents. This gap necessitates the present study to holistically define the required components of BIM requirements by extending the base knowledge of BIM requirements as defined by Saleh and Alshawi (2005) and Kassem et al. (2014). Methodology The study employed PRISMA-P (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses) (Moher et al., 2009) by first identifying related literature in the Web of Science, Scopus, and specific top-ranked journals covering BIM area of research. The following sets of keywords were used: (1) body of knowledge (including requirements, specifications and deliverables); (2) field area (including BIM, “building information modelling,” “building information model,” “building information modelling and management,” “collaborative BIM,” “integrated BIM,” “level 2 BIM,” and “level 3 BIM”) and (3) context (including organisation, firm, SMEs, industry, “construction industry,” AEC, macro, micro, and project). The initial search produced a list of 423 records, but 24 records were removed because of duplication. The remaining 399 articles were screened based on the following criteria, among others: publication types (research articles), language (English publications), and year (publication from 2005 to 2019). Finally, an eligibility screening was conducted to finalise the relevant literature for the qualitative thematic analysis. The total number articles finalised for analysis in ATLAS.ti 8 was 39. Results The review of the study uncovered five main pillars and 41 subpillars of BIM requirements throughout a whole lifecycle of a project. The six main pillars are process (P1) (16 subpillars), policy (P2) (7 subpillars), technology (P3) (6 subpillars), environment (P4) (6 subpillars), and people (P5) (6 subpillars). Process requirements of BIM have been the primary focus of previous studies (n=29), from which the following 16 subpillars emerged under the “process” pillar (P1): (i) benchmarking practices; (ii) BIM implementation plan; (iii) BIM model deliverables; (iv) BIM lifecycle process map; (v) BIM uses process map; (vi) BIM-information delivery manuals (IDM); (vii) COBIE; (viii) cost implementation plan; (viv) digital data management; (x) identification of project team’s capability; (xi) mobilisation; (xii) pilot project; (xiii) process flow redesign; (xiv) quality assurance; (xv) scoping activities and purpose and (xvi) risk management. Furthermore, majority of of the reviewed articles (n=25) discuss the policy pillar (P2) of BIM requirements, which further consist of the following seven subpillars: (i) BIM based documents; (ii) BIM execution plan; (iii) collaboration requirements; (iv) contractual documents; (v) employer information requirements; (vi) intellectual property and (vii) obligation of stakeholders. Meanwhile, sub-pillars including (i) BIM object library; (ii) collaboration server; (iii) ICT infrastructure; (iv) interoperability; (v) technical support and (vi) vendor evaluation have emerged across 23 studies under the technological requirements of BIM (P3). Also, in regard to the environment pillar (P4), the following six subpillars are discussed across 13 studies: (i) BIM research and development; (ii) incentives and reward; (iii) IT vison and mission; (iv) knowledge management; (v) organisational culture and (vi) senior leadership. Finally, the following six sub-pillars emerged within the people pillar (P5) of BIM requirements: (i) BIM competence; (ii) organisation experience; (iii) qualification; (iv) roles and responsibilities; (v) staff experience and (vi) training and education. Findings In can be concluded from the study that striking a balance between fulfilling the required components that reside within the process, policy, technology, environment, and people pillars of BIM requirements is crucial in achieving the full benefits of BIM adoption throughout a construction project lifecycle. Despite the policy and process requirements of BIM being the focus of discussion in previous studies, very few have attended to the investigation of people-related requirements of BIM, hence providing an avenue for further study. BIM adoption can no longer be viewed as a technological challenge but rather a strategy that requires organisational, managerial, and operational changes within the traditional practices. This shift would require the existing architectural, engineering and construction (AEC) industry players to equip themselves with different skill sets in order to remain competitive in the AEC industry sector. The experiment results of using UAV for road engineering structures modeling are considered in this article. The experiment was conducted by officers of the company «Indor Centre» with the geodesy and corresponding IT-technologies department of the road building faculty staff-members of the Moscow automobile and road construction state technical university (MADI).

Today, moving from a two-dimensional environment to a more advanced interactive three-dimensional (3D) environment in the industries of architecture, engineering, and construction has become one of the most significant topics of interest. This is due to several primary advantages that the 3D environment can offer. Building information modeling (BIM) can be used as a highly advanced system to present a desired reality in a 3D interactive environment accompanied with 3D reality captured data, such as the point cloud data. As such, these 3D environments can be employed for more advanced uses, such as virtual reality and augmented reality technologies (VR and AR). Recently, BIM has been employed in the context of heritage (known as HBIM, or Heritage Building Information Modeling) for different purposes, such as to provide as-built information with the ability to interact with the end user and uploading information (e.g., historical photographs, documents about materials, or any past restoration projects) into the BIM model. This research will focus on providing an interactive rich virtual 3D model for heritage management. This virtual environment can be employed in cultural tourism and used for the abovementioned purposes. The research project has been adopted in the case of the Zainal Historical House (Bayt Zainal) located in the Historic District of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. This house is described as one of the significant historical buildings in the historic district. The key aim for selecting this case study is to bridge the gap in architectural knowledge regarding these heritage buildings and their hybrid structural systems (i.e., integration of steel or concrete with the traditional “Mangbi” stone technique).

The 4th industrial revolution started in 2016 and referred to a new phase in the industrial revolution. One of the most significant technological evolvements during the 4th industrial revolution is Augmented Reality (AR) technology. AR superimposes interactional virtual objects/images to real environments. Because of the interaction and see-through characteristics, AR is better applied to engineering than Virtual Reality (VR). The application of AR in civil infrastructure can avoid artificial mistakes, improve efficiency, and saves budget. This article reviews AR applications in civil infrastructure, focusing on research studies in the latest five years (2016–2020) and their milestone developments. More than half of the AR research and implementation studies have focused on the construction domain in the last five years. Researchers deploy AR technologies in on-site construction to assist in discrepancy checking, collaborative communication, and safety checking. AR also uses building information models (BIMs) to produce detailed 3D structural information for visualization. Additionally, AR has been studied for structural health monitoring (SHM), routine and damage detection, energy performance assessment, crack inspection, excavation, and underground utility maintenance. Finally, AR has also been applied for architecture design, city plan, and disaster prediction as an essential part of smart city service. This article discusses the challenges of AR implementation in civil infrastructure and recommends future applications.

We proposed an interior design decision support system that enables clients to participate in the early phases of the interior design for a housing project. This allows them to select objects (e.g., colours, patterns, material) for the interior design based on the unit measure of costs with input from various A/E/C experts. This also allows the interior designer and cost estimator to check the costs accordingly. The proposed system was implemented using the BPH and IDOL. In an example study, interior design objects and default costs were proposed while examining the fixed and variable cost options. This study examined how client decisions made during the early design phases and based on restrictions in the interior design can affect a project. An analysis of the results confirmed that our interior design decision support system leads to client satisfaction with the interior design, while enabling clients to manage project costs by providing a cost baseline. Overall, this increases the accuracy of early estimates made during the project concept phase. Cost and time are both very key indicators for assessing project performance. In the earlier phases of large-scale housing projects, the review of construction costs is important (Kim et al., 2004). It is not appropriate to state that high-cost interiors designs are good and low-cost ones are not. However, making interior designs or design changes without any consideration of the cost is a source of serious problems for the interior designer and other project participants, especially the owner/developer. Moreover, despite considerable information on costs for alternative proposals selected by interior designers, existing procedures have many problems as seen in a review and feedback of these alternatives. To address these problems, we investigated various alternative proposals for surfaces (floor, wall and ceiling) and non-surfaces (furniture, windows and doors) on a unit plan basis for large-scale housing development projects, and provided an interior information model. The model was validated through an example study to show how it could be used in the decision-making process by various participants in a construction project. The proposed model is useful in providing a total interior cost review and cost baseline for the developer/owner, a means for cost-based decision making by interior designers, and the interior material information required by builders. Future studies will focus on the automation of quantity surveying and graphics to reinforce the use of Internet-based decision support systems. In future studies, further subdivision of the design objects characteristics will be necessary, as well as the development of a system that enables clients to make interior design decisions by changing layers, a subject outside the scope of the present study. Additional work is also required to enable interior designers to use the information provided by vendors and suppliers directly, and to provide the information for the procurement phase without any additional processing.

In accordance with the concept of sustainable development, this study aims to transform old factory buildings on the premises of the Shougang (aka Capital Steel) Group into a cultural activities center serving the needs of neighboring communities. BIM information model technology is used to maximize the utility of the old buildings' structure and space. The main contents of the study include an introduction of old factory building data, the analysis of the whole life cycle information of the factory buildings, and the establishment of a visual information model. On this basis, the artistic elements of the building structure and internal space are restructured, the space layout of the site is optimized, the structural materials are reused, the design quality control and the architectural design process are carried out. All these procedures are taken to ensure that the environment meets the functional requirements of public cultural activities, and the continuation and innovation of industrial culture are well demonstrated. It is found that based on BIM technology, the design concept and design scheme of old factory building transformation can be realized creatively and has a good application prospect.

Over the last decade, particular interest in using state-of-the-art emerging technologies for inspection, assessment, and management of civil infrastructures has remarkably increased. Advanced technologies, such as laser scanners, have become a suitable alternative for labor intensive, expensive, and unsafe traditional inspection and maintenance methods, which encourage the increasing use of this technology in construction industry, especially in bridges. This paper aims to provide a thorough mixed scientometric and state-of-the-art review on the application of terrestrial laser scanners (TLS) in bridge engineering and explore investigations and recommendations of researchers in this area. Following the review, more than 1500 research publications were collected, investigated and analyzed through a two-fold literature search published within the last decade from 2010 to 2020. Research trends, consisting of dominated sub-fields, co-occurrence of keywords, network of researchers and their institutions, along with the interaction of research networks, were quantitatively analyzed. Moreover, based on the collected papers, application of TLS in bridge engineering and asset management was reviewed according to four categories including (1) generation of 3D model, (2) quality inspection, (3) structural assessment, and (4) bridge information modeling (BrIM). Finally, the paper identifies the current research gaps, future directions obtained from the quantitative analysis, and in-depth discussions of the collected papers in this area.

The information technology input for the building life cycle is more and more intensive, starting with design, through realization and including the use and the operation of the building. The progress in this field is represented by Building In-formation Modelling (BIM). BIM is in its base object-oriented 3D model of the building, which includes information about the structure, elements and their parameters. This paper deals with the possibilities of BIM model creation of industrial plants for documentation and management. The basic principles, of BIM, the possible content of three main parts of a BIM model of industrial plants (the graphical data, the non-graphical data and the documents) are discussed. Part of the paper is devoted to the role of the surveyors in the process of building information modelling of industrial plants. In addition to the above mentioned, a case study is part of the paper. The case study is aimed at the proposal of information model for documentation and management of pipeline bridges in the chemical company Duslo, a.s. (Slovakia). The measurement procedure of the geometry of a pipeline bridge, the additional information collection and the model creation in AutoCAD Plant 3D (used by the mentioned company) are briefly described.

The advanced market of engineering services is essentially important for a shift to the age of industry 4.0, since it determines the potential capacity of a country for creating science-driven productions, improving technologies under conditions of digital transformation, increasing the existing capacities through implementation of large high-tech investment-and-construction projects. Within the study, the stage of development of engineering in Russia was assessed as a method of promoting innovations applied within the process of elaboration and implementation of investment-and-construction projects under digital transformation of the economy. The study involved analysis, comparison, generalization, grouping and modeling methods. Legislative acts of the Russian federation were used, as well as regulatory documents on activities in construction engineering, statistical and analytical proceedings and documentation, materials from scientific conferences, official publications on problems of engineering development when implementing investment-and-construction projects. During the study, some external, legal and technological factors that restrain the development of the engineering services market were revealed and some ways to neutralize them were found. The following factors of technological revolution were identified: transition to digital economy and thereby transition from investment-and-construction engineering to digital engineering in the framework of investment-and-construction activities. Processes of digital engineering were investigated in terms of projects implemented by ViPS Group of Companies and their general contractor ZAO Strabag. The main advantages of digital engineering were analyzed when implementing investment-and-construction projects in Russia.

The study aims to develop standardized BIM methods for buildings that are part of the Moscow city renovation program. This problem is extremely urgent, since there are no digitized sources of typical projects of the last century, and this complicates the process of calculating the generation of construction and demolition waste and casts doubt on its accuracy. At the stage of high quality and timely dismantling phase (calculation of the weight of construction and demolition waste, scheduling of work and transportation of waste), this process can be automated using information modeling software – Autodesk Revit 2019. This will complement the existing information model by including in it one of the final stages of the building’s life cycle – dismantling, which in transparency, accessibility and completeness will not be inferior to the blocks of design, examination, construction and operation. On the basis of albums of typical building projects, you can get a lot of information to create the necessary project families and specifications, which will greatly simplify and speed up the process of developing building demolition projects in the future, since with each new project libraries of elements, materials, families will be supplemented. The article presents the process of developing a project template for the phase of the dismantling of buildings. A new project parameter has been created, assigned to each material of the project template, the necessary parametric and design characteristics have been assigned for further calculations based on the simulated building design, a design specification has been developed, on the basis of which data on the weight of construction and demolition waste can be quickly obtained, relevant checks carried out for different types of developed and basic project families.

The article substantiates the need for the transition of industrial enterprises to a digital business management basis. The analysis of literary sources on the problems of digital transformation of industrial enterprises, which showed the relevance of research in the field of digitalization of industrial enterprise management systems and allowed to formulate the main technological trends of doing business in the framework of Industry 4.0. As a result of the analysis, it was established that one of the technological trends in industry is the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Using the construction industry as an example, the possibilities of using unmanned aerial vehicles, which have become a highly efficient IT technology, whose application range is wide enough: from monitoring the current situation and providing security at the facility to helping to carry out the most complex geodetic works on hard-to-reach facilities, are described. The work resulted in the formulation of the technological advantages of the use of unmanned aerial vehicles in industry, namely, the construction and implementation of an information model of an industrial facility (BIM), orthomosaic, and the creation of automated construction sites. Along with the advantages, the main difficulties of introducing robotic technologies in the industry have been identified.

BIM-files (Building Information Models) are in modern architecture and building management a basic prerequisite for successful creation of construction engineering projects. At the facilities department of the Smithsonian Institution more than six hundred buildings were maintained. All facilities were digital available in an ESRI ArcGIS-environment with connection to the database information about single rooms with the usage and further maintenance information. These data are organization wide available by an intranet viewer, but only in a two-dimensional representation. Goal of the carried out project was the development of a workflow from available BIM-models to the given GIS-structure. The test-environment were the BIM-models of the buildings of the Smithsonian museums along the Washington Mall. Based on new software editions of Autodesk Revit, FME and ArcGIS Pro the workflow from BIM to the GIS-data structure of the Smithsonian was successfully developed and may be applied for the setup of the future 3D intranet viewer.

We proposed an approach to automatically establish the logic chain for MEP.We presented a set of solutions for as-built information creation and delivery.Intelligent O&M management of MEP was achieved in a novel heterogeneous platform.The platform was tested and successfully applied in a real project. Incomplete building information in delivery and the lack of compatible tools for Operation and Maintenance (O&M) have hindered the development of the intelligent management of Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing (MEP) systems. In fact, the information related to the O&M management of the MEP system conventionally comes from the completion documents in the forms of hard copies or unstructured digital files, making it hard to search for useful information in the sea of documents and drawings. Therefore, digitalization of information is an urgent task to facilitate the intelligent management of the MEP system. As a project deliverable, the as-built information model shall not only contain geometrical information and necessary construction-related data, but also built-in information useful for the intelligent O&M management. In the present study, based on the Building Information Modeling/Model (BIM) technology, a set of solutions including the automatic establishment of the logic chain for MEP systems, an equipment grouping and labeling scheme and an algorithm to transform BIM information to GIS map model, is proposed to digitalize and integrate the MEP-related information into the as-built model. Subsequently, a cross-platform O&M management system is developed using the MEP-related information in the as-built model to run routine O&M tasks and to effectively response to MEP-related emergencies. The developed system is applied to aid the O&M management of MEP engineering in a real project, showing that the developed system facilitates the intelligent O&M management and guarantees the security of the MEP system and its subsystems.

Additional professional programs for a polytechnic university staff in the field of building engineering and technologies are presented in the article, such as “The implementation of programs using e-education related to building engineering and technologies” and “Development of research and innovation activities in building engineering and technologies”. The Federal State Educational Standard in education and pedagogical sciences (44.06.01 - higher qualification specialists) and the professional standard (01.004 -teacher of professional education, professional education and vocational education) are the basis of these programs. The additional professional programs in the field of building engineering and technologies comprise two academic modules, i.e. state policy in education as the common module and a special module for each additional professional program. The common academic module includes the following main topics: the structure of Russian educational system, the organizational principles of educational activities, the rights and responsibilities of teachers and students, the state planning and regulations of educational activities, the management of the education system, economic fundamentals and financial support, the international cooperation in the educational field. The special academic module on the implementation of the main professional program using e-education includes the following topics: information modeling in construction engineering and technologies, the program package for construction information modeling (CIM), organization of the project file, exploring the interface, assessment of functionality, functional features of CIM, using simulation tools, working with objects, modeling of your own objects, getting information from digital building models (types, specifications, statements, catalogs, etc.), modeling of high buildings, validation of models, cloud technology and mobile access to CIM data, engieneering design documentation, external links, templates and tools of model’s further development. The special academic module related to the development of research and innovation activities includes other topics as well: research activities in the planned and market economies, market relations in research activities’ management, pricing, pricing strategies with setting the price for an innovative product, approach tracking of competitor prices and effective advertising. The staff trainees of the additional professional program defend the final certification work. The individual assignments of the final certification work are the development of methodical guidelines for different disciplines, students’ methodical guidelines on research work, lectures and manuals, textbooks, manuals to laboratory work, manuals to self-study work or the preparation of scientific publications, grant application and innovative project.

Ensuring energy quality, i.e. compliance with specified or standardised energy performance indicators of buildings over the entire life cycle, can reduce the climate impact of the building sector. In this work, the causes for quality deficiencies in small building services installations as well as the structure of actors interacting with building services were analysed. On this basis, we developed a solution approach in the form of an information model including a catalogue of all requirements and the necessary content to address and improve the quality assurance of HVAC in small buildings. This information model will serve as the basis for future digital tools that can perform (partially) automated heating load calculations and the design of heating systems, improve installation logistics and installation quality through providing information and the necessary processing, and enable improved hydraulic balancing and control.

Bridge management involves a variety of information from different data sources, including geometric model, analysis model, bridge management system (BMS) and structural health monitoring (SHM) system. Current practice of bridge management typically handles these diverse types of data using isolated systems and operates with limited use of the data. Sharing and integration of such information would facilitate meaningful use of the information and improve bridge management, as well as enhance bridge operation and maintenance and public safety. In many industries, information models and interoperability standards have been developed and employed to facilitate information sharing and collaboration. Given the success of building information modeling (BIM) in the Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry, efforts have been initiated to develop frameworks and standards for bridge information modeling (BrIM). Current developments of BrIM focus primarily on the physical descriptions of bridge structures, such as geometry and material properties. This paper presents an information modeling framework for supporting bridge monitoring applications. The framework augments and extends the prior work on the OpenBrIM standards to further capture the information relevant to engineering analysis and sensor network. Implementation of the framework employs an open-source NoSQL database system for scalability, flexibility and performance. The framework is demonstrated using bridge information and sensor data collected from the Telegraph Road Bridge located in Monroe, Michigan. The results show that the bridge information modeling framework can potentially facilitate the integration of information involved in bridge monitoring applications, and effectively support and provide services to retrieve and utilize the information.

The seismic performance of non-structural elements is nowadays recognized to be a key issue in performance-based earthquake engineering. The knowledge of construction details within a building is of paramount importance in order to reduce uncertainties and improve the quality of the analysis and design, particularly in regards to non-structural elements. The use of Building Information Modelling (BIM) could represent a new frontier in the seismic design of non-structural elements by increasing the reliability of the seismic design and/or assessment. This study discusses the effectiveness of using Building Information Models in seismic design of non-structural building elements. A simple tool has been developed to perform automatically the seismic design of sway braces for pressurized fire suppressant sprinkler piping systems based on information extracted from a Building Information Models. The effectiveness of the proposed procedure was validated via a case study.

The fact that a large portion of the work in construction projects is usually carried out by different subcontractors, makes an effective work packaging process crucial for the subsequent execution planning. However, the definition of optimal work packages is currently challenging and time consuming. A method was developed to allow the work packaging process to be carried out in a more accurate and efficient way, using data from Building Information Models (BIM). This method is based on a bottom-up approach that can take into account relations between specific components, and the consequent interruptions that will occur in the construction processes. The method incorporates BIM data in Design Structure Matrices and Domain Mapping Matrices to automatically generate a list of proposed work packages with minimal interfaces. An application of the method in a case study demonstrated that it can accelerate the work packaging process, and allow alternative solutions to be explored at an early stage in the project.

Formwork systems are accountable for a significant share of the cost of reinforced concrete structures. The application of constructability principles to the design, selection and management of formwork systems in the preconstruction phase can significantly reduce the cost of reinforced concrete construction projects. Although many studies have developed tools and methodologies to automate the design and selection of formwork systems, few studies have explored the benefits of improving the process of managing formwork. The focus of this paper is on the use of BIM along with a cascading tool to maximize the return on formwork investment and improve the management of formwork. This paper presents an approach to utilize data drawn from the building information models coupled with a cascading algorithm to efficiently manage the formwork inventory on a construction project by generating a scheduled formwork reuse plan and calculating the minimum quantity of formwork required for the project. The paper discusses the use of BIM to extract data required for the cascading tool, working of the cascading algorithm and the development of the tool. The paper ends by presenting a case study where the developed tool was applied on a construction project in Cincinnati, Ohio and 13% savings in formwork material cost was reported.

Integrating Building Information Modeling (BIM) and Lean Construction (LC) can improve the reinforced concrete bridging planning process, due to the possibility of managing the project information with BIM to obtain accurate input data that benefit the application of LC principles. The application of BIM to bridges is called Bridge Information Modeling (BrIM). In this paper, we study the feasibility of jointly apply BrIM technology and LC philosophy, instead of the individual use of BrIM models for planning reinforced concrete bridges. We used an investigative approach based on a case study, divided into two stages: in the first, we planned the case study with BrIM 3D models; and in the second, with BrIM 5D models and LC. The integration of BrIM and LC improve the results of the project planning stage by early detecting problems and constraints; this detection has the visualization and information management advantages provided by BIM, which along with the application of LC principles improve project planning, and encourage waste reduction.

The designs of large-scale building systems, such as Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing (MEP) systems, undergo spatial changes during design-construction coordination, and as a result, their as-built conditions deviate, in some cases significantly, from their as-designed conditions. Construction engineers need to detect and analyze the differences between as-designed and as-built conditions of building systems promptly for responsive change management. Existing data-model comparison approaches either cannot correctly detect changed objects packed in small spaces, or cannot handle the computational complexity of comparing detailed as-designed and as-built geometries of MEP systems that contain hundreds or even thousands of elements (e.g., ducts). This paper presents a computationally efficient spatial-change-detection approach that reliably compares as-designed Building Information Models (BIMs) and 3D as-built models derived from laser scan data. It integrates nearest neighbor searching and relational graph based matching approaches to achieve computationally efficient change detection and management. A case study using data collected from a campus building was conducted to compare the new change detection approach proposed in this paper against the state-of-the-art change detection techniques. The results indicate that the proposed approach is capable of making more precise data-model comparisons in a computationally efficient manner compared to existing data-model comparison techniques.

Building information modeling (BIM) technology used to further processes in the green building industry has received wide coverage in the literature. Some companies have leveraged this natural synergy but many remain on the sidelines, unable to fully exploit the potential offered by BIM in green projects. Moreover, most literature focus on technical aspects of BIM use while ignoring social and cultural aspects of its application. This narrow, tactical focus can undermine the synergy between BIM and green building, and prevent achieving strategic, sustainable goals. The objectives of this article are to: (1) review BIM status in the context of social and cultural sustainability within the building industry; and also, (2) propose criteria for furthering integrative applications that achieve social and cultural sustainability in the green building industry. Five layers of social and cultural sustainability were identified and classified within a framework of BIM applications for purposes of analyzing guidelines and standards. The proposed criteria relates to complexity found in the green building industry and uses BIM integration capability in attempt to achieve social and cultural integration. The criteria proposed serve as a basis for evaluation of BIM performance and therefore, as a solution to mitigate differences in existing guidelines and standards.

Low productivity levels have contributed to the cost and schedule overruns that have plagued the construction of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) processing facilities in Australia. Traditional paper based methods such as Computer-Aided-Design have been relied upon to create, manage, store and retrieve information throughout each phase of a project's lifecycle for Electrical, Instrumentation and Control Systems (EICS). As a result of utilizing CAD to document (e.g., specifications, and ‘as-builts’) ECIS, the propensity for errors, omissions and information redundancy to occur, significantly increases. Attending to issues of this nature during the construction of a facility can result in scope changes, losses in productivity, and increases in project costs. Using a case study, this paper examines the nature of the documentation produced to up-grade a domestic gas metering system that formed an integral part of a LNG plant's production process. Issues hindering productivity during the production of the documentation, communication and information exchanges, and change management involved with the deliver of the EICS are presented. In addressing problems identified in the case study, it is suggested that EICS for an LNG plant should be digitized (i.e process of converting information into a digital format) using a Systems Information Model to ensure effective and efficient production and management of information throughout its lifecycle, and contribute towards safeguarding the assets integrity.

Using a visualization engine to display the analyze results of power consumption data in a building can provide immediate and informative feedback for energy conservation research. Previous research has demonstrated that change of residents’ behavior can facilitate achieving the net-zero energy goal for a building. This research proposed a system called iARTS (interactive Augmented Reality system for Temporal and Spatial analysis of power consumption data integrated with building information models) that was designed to: (1) integrate building information model data into power consumption data sets in order to visualize the analysis results in Unity, which is a visualization engine originally designed for game development; (2) perform a spatiotemporal analysis mechanism to help residents realize an energy-saving tip, by identifying the appliances to be turned off; (3) perform another spatiotemporal analysis mechanism to identify the appliances that can be used jointly in order to consume all the solar PV-generated electricity at a maximum; (4) provide residents with query forms, scenes retrieval functions, and animations to educate residents as to where and when to implement the aforementioned energy-saving tips. With the use of iARTS, the temporal relationships between power sockets and appliances can be accurately described along with timestamped power consumption data. Residents are expected to be able to identify the electricity usage patterns that are wasteful, as well as to see any potential adjustment plan for using as much generated electricity as possible.
