Abstract

The US Bureau of Mines had developed MULSIM/NS, software that can predict potential coal bumps or pressure-induced bursts. These bumps are shifts in the stresses of the surrounding rock in underground mines. Often, the energy thus generated dissipates with no problem, but sometimes it results in an explosion in the mine. From 1959 to 1993, over 12 coal miners have died in such explosions. MULSIM/NS can analyze coal seams and compute bumps stress instabilities occurring over wide areas. The software's advantages and disadvantages are discussed., Building on research done in South Africa, the US.
