Bu tezin amacı, VIII. Henry ve VI. Edward hükümdarlığı sırasında 1509 ila 1553 yılları arasındaki 1997 vasiyetnameye yansıdığı üzere üst ve orta sınıfların dininin istatistiki verilerini sunmak ve analiz etmektir. Buna ek olarak, Lollardlığın etkisi, Avrupa Reformasyonu ve üst ve orta sınıfların, VIII. Henry ve VI. Edward'ın dini ve ekonomik politikaları ile birlikte İngiliz Reformasyonu'na olan tutumu, değişen dini inançlara ışık tutmak için analiz edilmektedir. The purpose of this thesis is to present and analyse statistical data of the religion of the gentry and middling classes as reflected in 1997 wills between 1509 to 1553, during the reign of Henry VIII and Edward VI. In addition to this, the effect of Lollardy, the European Reformation and the attitude of the gentry and middling classes to the English Reformation along with the religious and economic policies of Henry VIII and Edward VI are analysed to provide an insight into changing religious beliefs. The sample used in this thesis was collected from 19 different counties from The National Archives, Prerogative Court of Canterbury wills in series PROB 11 to provide a comprehensive regional analysis of the changing religious beliefs and attitudes of the respective testators towards the English Reformation. This thesis argues that, from the evidence of preambles and committals, Catholic England became a Protestant one by 1553. 219

Bu çalışmada, 16. ve 17. yüzyıllarda cadılık üzerine yayınlanmış çeşitli kitapçıklar, dönemin ilahiyatçıları tarafından yazılmış birkaç yapıt ve konuyla doğrudan ya da dolaylı olarak ilgili olduğu düşünülen bazı metinler incelenmektedir. The present thesis is an attempt to understand witchcraft and witch-beliefs in early modern England in socio-cultural and religious context. Here, various witchcraft pamphlets published in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, a few treatises written by the divines of the period, and several texts directly or indirectly related to the subject are examined. The general aim of this thesis is to investigate the relation between prevailing witch-beliefs and other elements of early modern English society and culture, and at the same time, to treat the interaction and conflict between the Protestant and popular cultures of the period within the context of the discussion of witchcraft. Particularly focusing on the image of the disorderly woman, the belief in the witch?s `familiar spirit?, and the Lancashire witch-trials of 1612, this thesis reveals that studying aspects of the beliefs about witchcraft allows for insights into the social, cultural, and religious atmosphere in early modern England and sheds light on the understanding of the world-views of both the learned and the villagers of the period. 138

ÖZET Vitae Sanctorum, azizlerin hayatları, kendi kuralları ve dinamikleri olan farklı tarihsel ve yazınsal bir tür oluşturmaktadır. Bu tür tarihçiye azizin hayatı ile ilgili değerli tarihsel bilgiler sağlar. Ayrıca, bu hayatlar, yazıldıkları dönemlerdeki kilise politikalarını ve bu hayatları yazanların kişisel düşüncelerini anlamamızı sağlayan önemli kaynaklar haline gelmişlerdir. Bu tez, anonim B, Ghent'li Adelard, Canterbury'li Osbern, Eadmer, Malmesbury'li William ve Güney İngiliz Efsanelerinin anonim yazarlarının eserleri vasıtasıyla ortaya çıkmış olan ve 10. yüzyıl İngiltere'sinde manastır reformunda önemli bir rol oynayan Canterbury'li Aziz Dunstan'ın hayatını tartışmaktadır. This genre provides the historian with valuable data concerning the historical basis behind the life of the saint. Moreover, these lives of the saints have become important sources for understanding the ecclesiastical politics of the times in which these vitae were composed and also for comprehending the concerns of the hagiographers. This dissertation discusses the life of St. Dunstan of Canterbury who was a leading monastic reformer in tenth-century England through the works of hagiographers, anonymous B., Adelard of Ghent, Osbern of Canterbury, Eadmer, William of Malmesmury and the anonymous author of the Early South English Legendary. These vitae were composed both in Latin and in Middle English before and after the Norman Conquest and emphasized different aspects of the life of St. Dunstan. The successive authors rewrote the life of the saint, and inserted new materials to satisfy the needs of contemporary clergy and laity. Concisely, this dissertation investigates these Lives to elucidate the important events and changes in the points of emphasis in the life of the saint varying in degrees which paved the way for the creation and development of the cult of St. Dunstan. Özet Bu tez 15. Yüzyıl İngiltere'sinde alt ve orta aristokratik sınıfın evlilik, aile, hizmet ve himaye konularını incelemektedir. İncelemede Stonor ve Paston ailelerinin mektup ve kayıtlı belgeleri birincil kaynak olarak kullanılmıştır. Çalışmada ortaya konulan temel yukarıda saydığım özelliklerin topulma kendine özgü bir düzen sağlamış olduğudur. Çalışma dört bölümden oluşmaktadır. Birinci bölüm birincil kaynakları incelemektedir. Dördüncü bölüm sonuç bölümüdür. 111 Abstract This thesis investigates the service and patronage relationship and family and marriage practices of gentry and lesser nobility in later medieval England in the light of Stonor letters and papers and Paston letters. This study suggests that service-patronage relationship on the one hand, and family and marriage practices on the other gave the society an order of its own. In addition to the history of the Stonor and Paston families, the significance of letter collections as primary sources is discussed. The service and patronage relationships and family and marriage practices of gentry and lesser nobility families of the later medieval England are also investigated. 89
