Human-dominated waterways contain thousands of chemicals. Determining which chemical is the most important stressor is important, yet very challenging. The Toxicity Identification Evaluation (TIE) procedure from the US Environmental Protection Agency uses a series of chemical and physical manipulations to fractionate compounds within a matrix and systematically identify potential toxicants through laboratory bioassay testing. Although this may provide useful information, it lacks ecological realism because it is subject to laboratory-related artifacts and is resource intensive. The in situ Toxicity Identification Evaluation (iTIE) technology was developed to improve this approach and has undergone a number of modifications over the past several years. The novel prototype 3 consists of an array of iTIE ambient water fractionation units. Each unit is connected to a peristaltic pumping system with an organism exposure chamber that receives water from a resin chamber to chemically fractionate test site water. Test organisms included freshwater and marine standard toxicity test species. Postfractionation waters are collected for subsequent chemical analyses. Currently, the resins allow for separation of ammonia, metals, and nonpolar organics; the subsequent toxicity responses are compared between treatments and unfractionated, ambient exposures. The iTIE system was deployed to a depth of 3 m and evaluated in streams and marine harbors. Chemical analyses of water and iTIE chemical sorptive resins confirmed chemical groups causing lethal to sublethal responses. The system proved to be as sensitive or more so than the traditional phase 1 TIE test and required almost half of the resources to complete. This iTIE prototype provides a robust technology that improves stressor-causality linkages and thereby supports strong evidence for ecological risk weight-of-evidence assessments. Although the natural occurrence of arsenic-containing lipids (arsenolipids) in marine organisms is now well established, the possible role of these unusual compounds in organisms and in the cycling of arsenic in marine systems remains largely unexplored. We report the finding of arsenolipids in 61 plankton samples collected from surface marine waters of high- and low-nutrient content along a transect spanning the Gulf Stream in the North Atlantic Ocean. Using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) coupled to both elemental and molecular mass spectrometry, we show that all 61 plankton samples contained six identifiable arsenolipids, namely, three arsenosugar phospholipids (AsPL958, 10-13%; AsPL978, 13-25%; and AsPL1006, 7-10% of total arsenolipids), two arsenic-containing hydrocarbons (AsHC332, 4-10% and AsHC360, 1-2%), and a methoxy-sugar arsenolipid that contained phytol (AsSugPhytol, 1-3%). The relative amounts of the six arsenolipids showed clear dependence on the nutrient status of the ambient water with plankton collected from high-nutrient waters having less of the arsenosugar phospholipids and more of the three non-P containing arsenolipids compared to low-nutrient waters. By combining these first field data of arsenolipids in plankton with reported global phytoplankton productivity, we estimate that the oceans' phytoplankton transform per year 50 000-100 000 tons of arsenic into arsenolipids.

Microbial communities on marine aggregates could be influenced by ambient water conditions; however, empirical data are scarce. In this study, we used fingerprint analysis of PCR-amplified 16S rRNA gene fragment to examine how microbial communities on aggregates change in response to different conditions of ambient water. We conducted two experiments using seawater cultures from surface waters of the lagoon and the anthropogenically influenced bay of Nouméa, New Caledonia: a transplant experiment in which the artificially produced aggregates from one station was added to ultra-filtered seawater culture of another station, and a water-flow experiment in which the artificially produced aggregates placed in the ultra-filtered seawater culture with or without water-flow. In a transplant experiment, bacterial community composition (BCC) on the bay and lagoon water aggregates were significantly different (p < 0.05, ANOSIM) at the beginning of experiment. After 11 days of incubation, BCC on the lagoon water aggregates were significantly different (p < 0.05) from transplanted communities. Transplantation effect was also observed in the bay water treatments. In a water-flow experiment, BCC on the bay and lagoon water aggregates were significantly different (p < 0.05) at the beginning of the experiment. BCC on the lagoon and bay water aggregates with and without water-flow treatments were significantly different (p < 0.05) at the end of incubation, and effect of water-flow on BCC were observed in the bay and lagoon water treatments. Our experimental studies suggest that changes in ambient water conditions potentially influence microbial communities on aggregates in the Bay of Nouméa.

To evaluate the ecotoxic potential of industrial effluent, whole effluent toxicity (WET) testing has been successfully introduced in several countries. This method can potentially be used as an effective monitoring measure for ambient water, such as river water. This chapter provides a case study where the WET tests were applied to river water monitoring. The river water quality of nine rivers was evaluated using short-term chronic toxicity tests, using three kinds of freshwater species. Two types of river water were found to have an adverse effect on daphnia reproduction. In case of one of the samples, the cause was salinity. To investigate the toxicity factors in the other two samples collected from the same river, samples were collected along the river, and a simplified WET test with daphnia and a chemical analysis were conducted. Subsequently, the causative substances and a point source were estimated. Following this, the sample from the suspicious point of discharge (i.e., industrial effluent) was collected and analyzed. High concentrations of V and Ni derived from petroleum coke were detected, suggesting that these were the main causes of toxicity of the industrial effluent as well as of river water samples. From the above results, it was shown that the WET test is effective not only for the evaluation of industrial effluent, but also for monitoring the ambient water.

The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic increases the consumption of antimicrobial substances (ABS) due to the unavailability of approved vaccine(s). To assess the effect of imprudent consumption of ABS during the COVID-19 pandemic, we compare the 2020 prevalence of antidrug resistance (ADR) of Escherichia coli (E. coli) with a similar survey carried out in 2018 in Ahmedabad, India using SARS-CoV-2 gene detection as a marker of ABS usage. We found a significant ADR increase for in 2020 compared to 2018 in ambient water bodies, harbouring a higher incidence of ADR E.Coli towards non-fluoroquinolone drugs. Effective SARS-CoV-2 genome copies were found to be associated with the ADR prevalence. The prevalence of ADR depends on the efficiency of WWTPs (Wastewater Treatment Plants) and the catchment area in its vicinity. In year 2018 study, prevalence of ADR was discretely distributed, and the maximum ADR prevalence recorded was ~60%; against the current homogenous ADR increase, and up to 85% of maximum ADR among the incubated E.coli isolated from the river (Sabarmati) and lake (Chandola and Kankaria) samples. Furthermore, wastewater treatment plants showed less increase in comparison to the ambient waters, which eventually imply that although SARS-CoV-2 genes and faecal pollution may be diluted in the ambient waters, as indicated by low Ct-value and E.coli count, the danger of related aftermath like ADR increase cannot be nullified. Also, Non-fluoroquinolone drugs exhibited overall more resistance than the quinolone drugs. Overall, this is probably the first ever study that traces the COVID-19 pandemic imprints on the prevalence of antidrug resistance (ADR) through wastewater surveillance and hints at monitoring escalation of other environmental health parameters. The benzenes have attracted worldwide attention due to their high biological toxicity in the environment. In this study, using species sensitivity distribution method to derive the aquatic life criteria of 7 benzenes (carbazole, 1,3-Dichlorobenzene, 1,4-Dichlorobenzene, 1,2,4-Trichlorobenzene, phenol, 2,4-Dichlorophenol and nitrobenzene), then risk quotient method (RQ), potentially affected fraction (PAF) method and joint probability curve (JPC) method were applied for multilevel ecological risk assessment for 7 benzenes in Tai Lake Basin. In addition, the human health ambient water quality criteria (AWQC) of 7 benzenes were derived according to USEPA guidelines, and the probability distributions of human health AWQC for 7 benzenes in China were simulated by Monte Carlo simulation combined with crystal ball software. Finally, the health risks of 7 benzenes in Tai Lake were assessed by RQ method assisted by Monte Carlo simulation. The results showed that nitrobenzene had the maximum aquatic life criteria value, followed by phenol, chlorobenzenes, 2,4-Dichlorophenol and carbazole. All recommended human health AWQC values of 7 benzenes were found at a position of 27th-55th percentiles in the output criteria distributions, indicating that recommended national human health AWQC values could provide effective protection for most of the population in China. Furthermore, the consumption of aquatic products was found to be the most influential parameter of human health AWQC for benzenes with higher Kow values. The risk assessments showed that noncarcinogenic 2,4-Dichlorophenol had potential ecological risk, carcinogenic carbazole and 1,2,4-Trichlorobenzene had significant human health risk in Tai Lake.

Organic UV filters are compounds that absorb UV irradiation by their highly conjugated structure. With the developing consciousness over the last century of the skin damage UV radiation can cause, the demand for organic UV filters has risen, for use not only in sunscreens, but also in other personal care products. The massive production and usage of these organic UV filters has resulted in extensive release into the aquatic environment, and thereby making an important group of emerging contaminants. Considering the widespread occurrence of organic UV filters in not only ambient water, but also sediment, soil and even indoor dust, their threats towards the health of living organisms have been a subject of active investigation. In this review article, we present an overall review of existing knowledge on the risks of organic UV filters from the aspects of both environmental and human health impacts. As for the environment, some organic UV filters are proven to bioaccumulate in various kinds of aquatic organisms, and further to have adverse effects on different kinds of animal models. Toxicological studies including in vivo and in vitro studies are important and effective means to ascertain the effects and mechanisms of organic UV filters on both the ecosystem and humans. Subsequent concerns arise that these compounds will affect human health in the long term. This review concludes by suggesting future lines of research based on the remaining knowledge gaps.

Plastic is able to sorb environmental pollutants from ambient water and might act as a vector for these pollutants to marine organisms. The potential toxicological effects of plastic-sorbed pollutants in marine organisms have not been thoroughly assessed. In this study, organic extracts from four types of plastic deployed for 9 or 12 months in San Diego Bay, California, were examined for their potential to activate the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) pathway by use of the H4IIE-luc assay. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), including the 16 priority PAHs, were quantified. The AhR-mediated potency in the deployed plastic samples, calculated as bio-TEQ values, ranged from 2.7 pg/g in polyethylene terephthalate (PET) to 277 pg/g in low-density polyethylene (LDPE). Concentrations of the sum of 24 PAHs in the deployed samples ranged from 4.6 to 1068 ng/g. By use of relative potency factors (REP), a potency balance between the biological effect (bio-TEQs) and the targeted PAHs (chem-TEQs) was calculated to 24-170%. The study reports, for the first time, in vitro AhR-mediated potencies for different deployed plastics, of which LDPE elicited the greatest concentration of bio-TEQs followed by polypropylene (PP), PET, and polyvinylchloride (PVC).

Fecal contamination of recreational waters with cattle manure can pose a risk to public health due to the potential presence of various zoonotic pathogens. Fecal indicator bacteria (FIB) have a long history of use in the assessment of recreational water quality, but FIB quantification provides no information about pollution sources. Microbial source tracking (MST) markers have been developed in response to a need to identify pollution sources, yet factors that influence their decay in ambient waters are often poorly understood. We investigated the influence of water type (freshwater versus marine) and select environmental parameters (indigenous microbiota, ambient sunlight) on the decay of FIB and MST markers originating from cattle manure. Experiments were conducted in situ using a submersible aquatic mesocosm containing dialysis bags filled with a mixture of cattle manure and ambient water. Culturable FIB (E. coli, enterococci) were enumerated by membrane filtration and general fecal indicator bacteria (GenBac3, Entero1a, EC23S857) and MST markers (Rum2Bac, CowM2, CowM3) were estimated by qPCR. Water type was the most significant factor influencing decay (three-way ANOVA, p: 0.006 to < 0.001), although the magnitude of the effect differed among microbial targets and over time. The presence of indigenous microbiota and exposure to sunlight were significantly correlated (three-way ANOVA, p: 0.044 to < 0.001) with decay of enterococci and CowM2, while E. coli, EC23S857, Rum2Bac, and CowM3 (three-way ANOVA, p: 0.044

Estrogens originated from humans can reach ambient water and possibly cause significant ecological risks. In this study, the quantities of human-origin estrone (E1) and 17β-estradiol (E2) in the influent and effluent of four sewer treatment plants (STPs) in Seoul, South Korea were estimated using a demographic model. A Monte Carlo simulation was used to assess the quantitative uncertainty of estimated E1 and E2 concentrations. Mean concentrations of E1 and E2 estimated for STP influents ranged from 29.5 to 38.4 and 7.5 to 9.7ng/L, respectively. Meanwhile, mean concentrations of E1 and E2 estimated for STP effluents were 4.9 to 6.6 and 0.28 to 0.36ng/L, respectively. These estimated values are similar to measured data as reported in the literatures within the range of uncertainty based on the Monte Carlo simulation. The hazard quotient (HQ) value in the main stem of the Han River was calculated to be far less than 1 because of the dilution effect of the Han River's abundant flow, indicating that most of the Han River ecosystem will not be influenced by these endogenous estrogens. With a 95% cumulative probability, HQ values in the main stem of the Han River for the Jungrang, Nanji, Tanchun, and Seonam STPs were less than 0.18, 0.07, 0.08, and 0.15, respectively. Nevertheless, HQ values >1 were observed in the vicinity of the STP outlets when using the numerical modeling. Our results show that the endocrine disruption potential of E1 and E2 around STP outlets in the main stem of the Han River must be monitored carefully.

Toxicity values for nickel on marine diatoms and copepods were derived based on bioassay tests. The 96 h IC50 of nickel on diatoms, Odontella mobiliensis and Coscinodiscus centralis were 0.31 ± 0.01 and 0.62 ± 0.02 mg/L and LC50 values on copepods, Oithona similis and Acartia danae were 2.78 ± 0.14 and 2.34 ± 0.32 mg/L, respectively. The species mean chronic values of nickel were 0.016, 0.17, 0.57 and 0.42 mg/L for O. mobiliensis, C. centralis, O. similis and A. danae, respectively. A hazardous concentration was derived and evaluated using the species sensitivity distribution (SSD) method. SSD indicated that 13 µg Ni/L is the maximum allowable concentration for protection of 95% plankton species in coastal and marine ecosystem of India. Diatoms are more sensitive to nickel than copepods by almost an order of magnitude. The toxicity values derived in the present study may be useful to calculate ambient water quality criteria/standard for nickel.

The US Environmental Protection Agency's (USEPA's) current ambient water quality criteria (AWQC) for lead (Pb) in freshwater were developed in 1984. The criteria are adjusted for hardness, but more recent studies have demonstrated that other parameters, especially dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and pH, have a much stronger influence on Pb bioavailability. These recent studies have been used to support development of a biotic ligand model (BLM) for Pb in freshwater, such that acute and chronic Pb toxicity can be predicted over a wide range of water chemistry conditions. Following USEPA guidelines for AWQC development and using a methodology consistent with that used by the USEPA in developing its recommended BLM-based criteria for copper in 2007, we propose acute and chronic BLM-based AWQC for Pb in freshwater. In addition to the application of the BLM approach that can better account for site-specific Pb bioavailability, the toxicity data sets presented are much more robust than in 1984, and there are now sufficient chronic Pb toxicity data available that use of an acute-to-chronic ratio is no longer necessary. Over a range of North American surface waters with representative water chemistry conditions, proposed acute BLM-based Pb criteria ranged from approximately 20 to 1000 µg/L and chronic BLM-based Pb criteria ranged from approximately 0.3 to 40 µg/L. The lowest criteria were for water with low DOC (1.2 mg/L), pH (6.7), and hardness (4.3 mg/L as CaCO3), whereas the highest criteria were for water with high DOC (9.8 mg/L), pH (8.2), and hardness (288 mg/L as CaCO3). To assess the relative contributions of traffic emission and other potential sources to high levels of atmospheric ammonia (NH3) in urban areas in the wintertime, atmospheric NH3 and related pollutants were measured at an urban site, ∼300 m from a major traffic road, in northern China in November and December 2015. Hourly average NH3 varied from 0.3 to 10.8 ppb with an average of 2.4 ppb during the campaign. Contrary to the common perspective in literature, traffic emission was demonstrated to be a negligible contributor to atmospheric NH3. Atmospheric NH3 correlated well with ambient water vapor during many time periods lasting from tens of hours to several days, implying NH3 released from water evaporation is an important source. Emissions from local green space inside the urban areas were identified to significantly contribute to the observed atmospheric NH3 during ∼60% of the sampling times. Chironomus tentans is a representative of a group of insects known as the midges, which are widely distributed in freshwater sediments during their larval stage of development. Ambient water quality criteria have been established in the United States for a relatively small number of contaminants, but no such criteria have yet been developed for sediments. Sediment toxicity can be estimated by comparing the concentrations of toxic substances associated with sediments with known dose-response relationships. The theory on which the equilibrium partitioning approach is based assumes contaminants associated with the solid phase of sediments will reach an equilibrium with the porewater and associated organisms which can be predicted from the physical and chemical properties of the sediment and chemical of interest. The results of bioassays with benthic organisms can then be compared to the concentrations of individual toxicants in the sediment to determine where on the dose-response relationship the sediment is for each chemical.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are widely distributed in various environmental media and have thus attracted extensive attention worldwide. To prevent and control PAH pollution in China, the study of ambient water quality criteria (AWQC), human health risks, and aquatic ecological risk is critical. There are no reports to date on the human health AWQC of PAHs in China. Therefore, this study first derived the human health AWQC values of 12 PAHs based on exposure data and bioaccumulation factor in China. We found that local exposure parameters and other relevant factors were key during the development of AWQC in different countries and regions, which led to differences with the reference value recommended by USEPA. Based on the incremental life time cancer risk (ILCR), hazard quotients (HQ) and potentially affected fraction (PAF) methods, the health and ecological risks of 16 PAHs were assessed subsequently. And the results are as follows: the non-carcinogenic PAHs’ health risks ranged from 1.01 × 10−10 to 1.60 × 10−9, and carcinogenic PAH health risks ranged from 5.03 × 10−7 to 4.74 × 10−5. The toxic effects of 8 PAHs on aquatic organisms exhibited the following order: benzo (a) pyrene (BaP) > anthracene (Ant) > pyrene (Pye) > phenanthrene (Phe) > fluoranthene (Flua) > acenaphthene (Ace) > fluorene (Flu) > naphthalene (Nap). Among these, the ecological risks posed by Ant and BaP were the highest, according to the HQ and PAF methods.

We examined the removal of resuspended sediments from ambient lake water by the pelagic herbivore, Daphnia pulex, in a short-term field-enclosure experiment during the spring clear-water phase. A number of studies have used quantitative microbial risk assessment (QMRA) to derive risk-based water quality thresholds (RBTs) for a diverse set of novel water quality indicators in recreational waters. Over time, the QMRA approach has been refined with respect to model inputs and hazard characterization. Recent work considered differential decay of pathogens and indicators, and mixtures of contamination of diverse ages. In the present study, we present a refined ambient water quality RBT for the human-associated marker HF183. The new estimate updates previous work as it specifically considers contamination aging through the inclusion of temperature-specific organism decay, and the presence of mixtures of human sewage contamination of diverse ages. Based on these analyses we derived a RBT of 525 HF183 copies/100 mL as representative of conditions consistent with those described in the 2012 Recreational Water Quality Criteria (32 illnesses /1000). In recreational waters, microbial contamination due to gulls is also common. To account for this, we consider the case where human contamination from sewage co-occurs with contamination from gull feces. The resultant proposed RBTs for HF183 range from 1 to 525 copies/100 ml and are a function of the amount of gull fecal contamination that is present in the water. The proposed RBTs can be considered for use in the evaluation of recreational water quality.

As a new type of pollutant, microplastics have attracted widespread attention in recent years. Studies have shown that microplastics can affect the growth of microalgae, but little study has been done on macroalgae. In this paper, the enrichment and the characteristics of microplastics on Ulva prolifera, a green tide species, from the Yellow Sea of China were studied. Our results showed that U. prolifera enriched microplastic with an average abundance of 4603.3 ​± ​1167.2 items kg−1 d. w., which was more than 10,000 times of the microplastics in the ambient water (448.9 ​± ​145.68 items m−3). U. prolifera showed different enrichment capacity for microplastics with different shapes, with foam and film being the dominant shapes. The microplastic trapped by U. prolifera were usually in the size range of 2–5 ​mm and the main polymer types were polystyrenepe (PS) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET). The adsorption mechanism of microplastics on U. prolifera showed that its binding to microplastics was mainly through physical interaction. By salvaging U. prolifera at an amount of roughly 239,000 tons/year, a large amount of microplastics (approximately 35.6 ​tons/year.) can be removed from the Yellow Sea, which obviously plays a role in reducing the pollution of microplastics in the marine environment.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are major drivers of risk at many urban and/or industrialized sediment sites. The US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) currently recommends using measurements of 18 parent + 16 groups of alkylated PAHs (PAH-34) to assess the potential for sediment-bound PAHs to impact benthic organisms at these sites. ASTM Method D7363-13 was developed to directly measure low-level sediment porewater PAH concentrations. These concentrations are then compared to ambient water criteria (final chronic values [FCVs]) to assess the potential for impact to benthic organisms. The interlaboratory validation study that was used to finalize ASTM D7363-13 was developed using 24 of the 2-, 3-, and 4-ring PAHs (PAH-24) that are included in the USEPA PAH-34 analyte list. However, it is the responsibility of the user of ASTM Method D7363 to establish a test method to quantify the remaining 10 higher molecular weight PAHs that make up PAH-34. These higher molecular weight PAHs exhibit extremely low saturation solubilities that make their detection difficult in porewater, which has proven difficult to implement in a contract laboratory setting. As a result, commercial laboratories are hesitant to conduct the method on the entire PAH-34 analyte list. This article presents a statistical comparison of the ability of the PAH-24 and PAH-34 porewater results to predict survival of the freshwater amphipod Hyalella azteca, using the original 269 sediment samples used to gain ASTM D7363 Method approval. The statistical analysis shows that the PAH-24 are statistically indistinguishable from the PAH-34 for predicting toxicity. These results indicate that the analysis of freely dissolved porewater PAH-24 is sufficient for making risk-based decisions based on benthic invertebrate toxicity (survival and growth). This reduced target analyte list should result in a cost-saving for stakeholders and broader implementation of the method at PAH-impacted sediment sites. We used quantitative microbial risk assessment to simulate the risk of gastrointestinal (GI) illness associated with swimming in waters containing different concentrations of human-associated fecal markers from raw sewage, HF183 and HumM2. The volume/volume ratio of raw sewage to ambient water was determined by comparing marker concentrations in recreational water to concentrations in raw sewage from 54 geographic locations across the United States. Concentrations of reference GI pathogens in raw sewage, volumes ingested by swimmers, dose–response functions, and fractions of infected that become ill were adopted from previous studies. Simulated GI risk increased with concentration of the human quantitative polymerase chain reaction markers in recreational waters. A benchmark illness rate of 30 GI illnesses per 1000 swimmers occurred at median concentrations of 4200 copies of HF183 and 2800 copies of HumM2 per 100 mL of recreational water. Management of produced water (PW) is a challenge for mature fields like those of Sonda de Campeche in the southern Gulf of Mexico and for the future development of deep water fields. Past studies suggest that PW effects are local; however, the risk of widespread, long-term impact on the population and ecosystem is considered low, but not verified from the published literature. The study describes monitoring events done in years 2003 and 2013, considering physicochemical characteristics, organic and inorganic environmental measurements as well as comparing the prognostic results of an environmental and health risk assessment. The study examined ambient water samples and sediments for Al, Ba, Ni, Cd, Pb, Zn, V, Cr, Cu, Fe, and As, and also polycyclic aromatics compounds included in tissues of collected fish near the discharge area and a reference coastal site assumed to be unaffected. From a regional perspective, the ecological and human risk data suggest that the effects of the present discharge are not confined locally, but increased with time and space.

The presence of industrial chemicals, consumer product chemicals, and pharmaceuticals is well documented in waters in the U.S. and globally. Most of these chemicals lack health-protective guidelines and many have been shown to have endocrine bioactivity. There is currently no systematic or national prioritization for monitoring waters for chemicals with endocrine disrupting activity. We propose ambient water bioactivity concentrations (AWBCs) generated from high throughput data as a health-based screen for endocrine bioactivity of chemicals in water. The U.S. EPA ToxCast program has screened over 1800 chemicals for estrogen receptor (ER) and androgen receptor (AR) pathway bioactivity. AWBCs are calculated for 110 ER and 212 AR bioactive chemicals using high throughput ToxCast data from in vitro screening assays and predictive pathway models, high-throughput toxicokinetic data, and data-driven assumptions about consumption of water. Chemical-specific AWBCs are compared with measured water concentrations in data sets from the greater Denver area, Minnesota lakes, and Oregon waters, demonstrating a framework for identifying endocrine bioactive chemicals. This approach can be used to screen potential cumulative endocrine activity in drinking water and to inform prioritization of future monitoring, chemical testing and pollution prevention efforts.

As one of the most oestrogenic synthetic compounds in water environment, diethylstilbestrol (DES) has been studied for decades. Some studies showed that DES can be removed by ultraviolet (UV) irradiation. However, no one has paid attention to the formation of oestrogenic disinfection by-products (DBPs) and the persistence of DES in surface water remains a mystery. In this study, UV was found to be very effective in removing oestrogenic activity regardless of water quality. Three oestrogenic DBPs were specifically isolated by oestrogen receptor-based affinity chromatography and identified as 9,10-diethylphenanthrene-3,6-diol, cis-DES and Z,Z-dienestrol. Among them, 9,10-diethylphenanthrene-3,6-diol was proved to have stronger oestrogenic activity than E2, but it can be further photodegraded. In addition, DES was also demonstrated to be a photochromic compound, whose UV-induced intermediates can be transformed back to DES under sunlight, which significantly slows down the photodegradation of DES. This study solves the question as to why UV-degradable DES is still detectable in the ambient water and provides a deep understanding of DES removal during UV disinfection.

Environmental pollution by mercury in ambient water samples is a recognized problem worldwide. Sample preservation and transport to the laboratory lead to uncertain analytical results. This study outlines the development of a procedure for on-site electrodeposition of mercury from water samples on a screen-printed gold electrode (SPGE) using portable voltammetric techniques. Once in the laboratory, Hg is analyzed by laser ablation inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LA-ICPMS) in order to ensure that the required sensitivity and precision levels for environmental sample analysis are reached. A new ablation chamber was intentionally designed for the analysis of SPGE's gold electrode. This cell has a small internal volume of 15 cm3 and the SPGE device perfectly fits inside. This design assures signal stability, avoids elemental fractionation and reduces wash-out time to a few seconds, reducing the analysis time considerably. The proposed method is capable of measuring dissolved mercury at the ng L-1 level (quantification limit 200 ng L-1) with good precision (RSD < 7.6%). Polyethylene passive samplers were deployed during summer and fall of 2011 in the lower Great Lakes to assess the spatial distribution and sources of gaseous and freely dissolved organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and their air-water exchange. Average gaseous OCP concentrations ranged from nondetect to 133 pg/m(3). Gaseous concentrations of hexachlorobenzene, dieldrin, and chlordanes were significantly greater (Mann-Whitney test, p0.05) at Lake Erie than Lake Ontario. A multiple linear regression implied that both cropland and urban areas within 50 and 10 km buffer zones, respectively, were critical parameters to explain the total variability in atmospheric concentrations. Freely dissolved OCP concentrations (nondetect to 114 pg/L) were lower than previously reported. Aqueous half-lives generally ranged from 1.7 to 6.7 years. Nonetheless, concentrations of p,p'-DDE and chlordanes were higher than New York State Ambient Water Quality Standards for the protection of human health from the consumption of fish. Spatial distributions of freely dissolved OCPs in both lakes were influenced by loadings from areas of concern and the water circulation patterns. Flux calculations indicated net deposition of γ-hexachlorocyclohexane, heptachlor-epoxide, and α- and β-endosulfan (-0.02 to -33 ng/m(2)/day) and net volatilization of heptachlor, aldrin, trans-chlordane, and trans-nonachlor (0.0 to 9.0 ng/m(2)/day) in most samples.

The effect of salinity and ionic composition of ambient water on the mortality of the Ponto-Caspian gammarid amphipod Dikerogammarus haemobaphes (Eichwald, 1841) was measured in the laboratory and an osmoregulatory curve plotted. A three-day experiment showed that salinities both higher (15, 20 PSU) and lower (0.1, 3.5 PSU) than 7 PSU reduced survival. Salinity levels of 0.1 and 20 PSU were lethal after 20 and 55 h of exposure, respectively. Among the ions analysed (Cl−, , Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+), Cl− and K+, and the ratios of Na+/K+ and Na+/Cl− had the greatest influence on the mortality of D. haemobaphes. Mortality was zero in waters where the concentrations and ratios of these ions most closely resembled those prevailing in the Caspian Sea. The osmoregulatory curve shows that D. haemobaphes is a eurytopic species i.e. osmoregulation is hyperosmotic within the salinity range of 0.1–20 PSU. A preliminary laboratory study was conducted to investigate the impact of different residual types and sediment surface roughness on copper contaminant fluxes to the water column. Sediments from Torch Lake, Michigan served as the test samples. These sediments are mining by-products with elevated Cu levels. Six experiments were run during which the sediments were conditioned to simulate different forms of residuals. During these experiments, the water column above the sediments was circulated via peristaltic pumping or orbital shaking and the total and dissolved Cu levels were monitored periodically for 15 days. Dissolved Cu levels indicated that during the first 48 hr the water column concentrations approached equilibrium for all six cases. Total Cu levels increased with time and did reach equilibrium but were more susceptible to fluctuations in water column suspended solids levels. Analysis of the resulting dissolved Cu data indicated that the resulting water column Cu concentrations differed with sediment surface and residual type. The highest dissolved Cu water column concentrations were observed for a roughened surface with a larger surface area. The lowest water column dissolved Cu levels were observed for the case with sediment slurry placed over clean sand. The fresh water Mollusca (Scientific name; Pila globosa) was collected from nine different stations of Loktak lake to investigate the elemental profile in the tissue of it as it can be used as biomonitor of the pollution of water. As the Gastropoda family is a feeder filter, it is very useful to examine the trace elements as well as toxic elements in the environment where it survives. The elements detected in the samples are Mg, Al, P, S, Cl, K, Ca, Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn, Se, Br, Rb, Sr and the elemental concentrations were compared with FAO limits to check their toxic levels. The elements detected so far are the time integral of their concentration so, that are several orders of magnitude above ambient water concentrations. The analysis of the elements was done with the help of energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) for its quick and multi-elemental detection capability. The test of significant toxicity (TST) is a hypothesis-testing approach based on bioequivalence developed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) for analyzing whole-effluent toxicity (WET) and ambient toxicity data. The present study compares results of acute and chronic toxicity tests of effluent, storm-water, and ambient (i.e., receiving-water) samples using both the TST and the standard no-observed-effect concentration (NOEC) approach. Valid WET data were analyzed from 890 tests provided by more than 25 dischargers in California and Washington, USA, representing the majority of test methods used in the U.S. WET program. We determined the δD values of the total fatty acids of Japanese rice to test the hypothesis that there is a wide variation in the hydrogen isotopic composition (δD) of the total fatty acids of Japanese rice sourced from different growth areas in Japan and to distinguish the minor differences among these growth areas. The δD values showed a wide variation ranging from -216‰ (Hokkaido) to -183‰ (Okinawa), indicating a good correlation with the corresponding variations for ambient water (r = 0.63) and mean temperature (r = 0.84). These results suggest that the δD values for the total fatty acids can be representative of the growth environments in Japan.

Surface discharges of negatively buoyant jets into moving ambient water create a range of complex flow patterns. These complexities arise through the interplay between the discharge’s initial fluxes and the motion of the ambient current. In this study a series of laboratory experiments were conducted for negatively buoyant surface discharges into crossflow to investigate flow patterns under different discharge and ambient conditions. The results compared with simulations of the CORMIX model, an expert system for ocean outfall design. In CORMIX, the simulation module DHYDRO for dense discharges has been used. Finally the flow different patterns were arranged in a dimensionless diagram to propose a modified flow classification system with new criteria.

We show that probability-based environmental resource monitoring programs, such as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (U.S. EPA) Environmental Monitoring and Assessment Program, and conditional probability analysis can serve as a basis for estimating ecological risk over broad geographic areas. Under certain conditions (including appropriate stratification of the sampled population, sufficient density of samples, and sufficient range of exposure levels paired with concurrent response values), this empirical approach provides estimates of risk using extant field-derived monitoring data. The monitoring data were used to prescribe the exposure field and to model the exposure–response relationship. We illustrate this approach by estimating risks to benthic communities from low dissolved oxygen (DO) in freshwater streams of the mid-Atlantic region and in estuaries of the Virginian Biogeographical Province of the United States. The New York/New Jersey Harbor (also known as the Hudson River Estuary) is heavily contaminated with polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) arising in part from inputs from the Upper Hudson River, which is a Superfund site containing historical PCB contamination, and also due to inputs from the New York City metropolitan area. The Contamination Assessment and Reduction Project (CARP) measured PCBs and other contaminants in ambient water samples collected throughout the Harbor region during 1998-2001. In order to investigate the sources of PCBs to the NY/NJ Harbor, this data base of PCB concentrations was analyzed using Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF). This analysis resolved seven factors that are thought to be associated with sources such as the Upper Hudson River, storm water runoff, combined sewer overflows (CSOs), and wastewater effluents. The PMF model also produced a factor that appears to be related to sites contaminated with Aroclor 1260. To the extent that the NY/NJ Harbor is typical of urbanized estuaries throughout the United States, these results suggest that storm water runoff is probably a significant source of PCBs to surface waters in urban areas.

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is a mixture of compounds that are found ubiquitously in natural waters. The characterization of DOM is important in order to understand its effect on environmental processes and during treatment systems. Of all the properties usually measured with relation to DOM, the polarity is of critical importance since it will directly influence different processes. Recently, a new method has been developed for the characterization of DOM under ambient conditions, called the Polar Rapid Assessment Method (PRAM). The PRAM allows characterization and temporal and spatial comparisons under environmentally relevant conditions of pH and ionic strength. This study first modifies the PRAM method to 3 probes for high sample throughput by using a subset of the SPE sorbents to interpret DOM polarity by DOC and UV detection. Then the modified PRAM is compared to the XAD resin polarity method and finds a similarity in hydrophobic assessment but different results for the hydrophilic DOM. This study then evaluates the use of PRAM as a tool to evaluate water treatment processes and the character of size fractions of DOM. The PRAM is shown to be a very useful tool to evaluate and thus optimize treatment efficiency and removal of DOM.

Post-spawning migrations of sea trout (Salmo trutta L.) in two northern Swedish river systems, Vindelalven and Pitealven, were studied. Telemetry was used to evaluate spawning locations, post-spawning mortality, overwintering survival/habitat selection/location, partitioned natural mortality from dam passage mortality and overall survival from post-spawning to the sea entry. Fifty-eight sea trout (LT = 50–86 cm) were radio-tagged at the beginning of their spawning migration from June to September in 2003 and 2004, and their spawning in September and October each year was monitored. In total, 91% (n = 53) survived spawning and were thus defined as kelts. Of these, 92% (n = 49) overwintered under ice-cover in deep, slow flowing sections of the rivers. Overwintering mortality was low, on average 8%. The main seaward migration occurred during May and June and was initiated when ambient water temperatures exceeded 4–6°C, independent of the start of the spring flood when flows rose to 1000 m3 s−1. The highest downstream migration speed was approximately 25 km 24 h−1 and migrations mainly took place at daytime. During seaward migration, the kelts encountered hydropower stations that lacked bypass systems for fish passage, which delayed their downstream migrations. Passage mortality at the power stations was 69 and 25% in the Vindelalven and Pitealven, respectively. These losses, combined with the naturally high winter survivals of kelts at the unregulated river parts, underline the importance of developing safe passage routes for kelts at hydropower facilities for conserving sea trout populations in regulated rivers. Dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP) synthesized by marine phytoplankton is the princi- pal source of dimethylsulfide (DMS), an important climate-affecting gas. Grazing by small zooplank- ton on phytoplankton often accelerates DMS production from algal DMSP. The effects of grazing by benthic suspension feeders, such as bivalve molluscs, however, have not been studied, even though their populations sometimes process a sizable fraction of local phytoplankton production. We fed Tetraselmis sp. Strain UW474 (27 to 42 fmol DMSP cell -1 ) to adult mussels Mytilus edulis and scallops Argopecten irradians and studied the fate of the algal DMSP during the 24 h following ingestion. The ability of certain components of particulate matter to induce oxidative stress through catalytic generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in vivo may be one mechanism accounting for observed linkages between ambient aerosols and adverse health outcomes. A variety of assays have been used to measure this so-called aerosol oxidative potential. We developed a semi-automated system to quantify oxidative potential of filter aqueous extracts utilizing the dithiothreitol (DTT) assay and have recently developed a similar semi-automated system using the ascorbic acid (AA) assay. Approximately 500 PM2.5 filter samples collected in contrasting locations in the southeastern US were analyzed using both assays. We found that water-soluble DTT activity on a per air volume basis was more spatially uniform than water-soluble AA activity. DTT activity was higher in winter than in summer/fall, whereas AA activity was higher in summer/fall compared to winter, with highest levels near highly trafficked highways. DTT activity was correlated with organic and metal species, whereas AA activity was correlated with water-soluble metals (especially water-soluble Cu, r=0.70–0.91 at most sites). Source apportionment models, Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) and a Chemical Mass Balance Method with ensemble-averaged source impact profiles (CMB-E), suggest a strong contribution from secondary processes (e.g., organic aerosol oxidation or metal mobilization by formation of an aqueous particle with secondary acids) and traffic emissions to both DTT and AA activities in urban Atlanta. Biomass burning was a large source for DTT activity, but insignificant for AA. DTT activity was well correlated with PM2.5 mass (r=0.49–0.86 across sites/seasons), while AA activity did not co-vary strongly with mass. A linear model was developed to estimate DTT and AA activities for the central Atlanta Jefferson Street site, based on the CMB-E sources that are statistically significant with positive coefficients. The model was used to estimate oxidative potential at this site over the period 1998–2009. Time-series epidemiological analyses were conducted to assess daily emergency department (ED) visits data for the five-county Atlanta metropolitan area based on the estimated 10 year backcast oxidative potential. Results suggest that estimated DTT activity was associated with ED visits for both asthma/wheeze and congestive heart failure, while AA activity was not linked to any health outcomes. The findings point to the importance of both organic components and transition metals from biomass burning and mobile sources to adverse health outcomes in this region.

The arsenic ambient water quality criterion (AWQC) for protection of human health via ingestion of aquatic organisms is currently 0.14 μ g/L. This AWQC is derived using a bioconcentration factor (BCF) of 44, which is a consumption-weighted average based on two data points for oysters and fish that was proposed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in 1980 for broad application to freshwater and marine environments. This BCF is based on the assumption that bioaccumulation is a simple linear function of the exposure concentration. In the nearly quarter of a century since this BCF was promulgated, there have been additions to the arsenic bioaccumulation database and a broader scientific understanding of bioaccumulation mechanisms and how they can be applied to estimating tissue concentrations in aquatic organisms. As part of the NJ Toxics Reduction Workplan for NY-NJ Harbor, ambient water samples were collected at fifteen locations along the tidal portions of the Hackensack, Passaic, Raritan, Rahway and Elizabeth Rivers, and in Newark Bay, the Arthur Kill, and Kill van Kull. A Trace Organics Platform Sampler was used to collect a total of 75 suspended sediment phase samples between June 2000 and May 2002. These samples were analyzed for spatial and wet vs. dry weather trends in the 17 polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs; modified USEPA Method 1613b). Mean total PCDD/F (tPCDD/F) concentrations at the sampling locations ranged between 3.8 and 41.5 ng/g. On average, OCDD accounted for almost 80% of the tPCDD/F concentrations; mean total [PCDD/F – OCDD] concentrations ranged between 0.84 and 5.20 ng/g at the sampling locations. Mean 2,3,7,8-TCDD concentrations ranged between 0.003 and 0.28 ng/g, with the highest concentrations (> 0.10 ng/g) along the tidal Passaic and lower Hackensack Rivers, and in upper Newark Bay. Mean tPCDD/F Toxic Equivalency Quotients (TEQ) ranged between 45 and 344 TEQ pg/g, with the highest levels found in the lower Passaic River. Toxicity was primarily driven by 2,3,7,8-TCDD concentrations in the Passaic and Hackensack Rivers, and in Newark Bay. Examples of congener distribution patterns at some of the sampling locations are also presented.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (USEPA) current ambient water quality criteria (AWQC) for cyanide were developed in 1984. Since this time, additional research on cyanide toxicity and analytical chemistry has suggested that cyanide AWQC values need to be updated to reflect the current state-of-the-science and to ensure that the methods for implementing the cyanide AWQC reflect the bioavailable and toxic forms of cyanide. Therefore, the Water Environment Research Foundation (WERF) sponsored a reassessment of the AWQC for cyanide by initiating a thorough review of the current scientific literature on cyanide and conducting additional laboratory studies to further understand cyanide chemistry and toxicity. Consistent with the USEPA’s draft strategy for developing AWQC, this evaluation also considered whether the cyanide AWQC are protective of benthos, threatened and endangered (T&E) species, and aquatic-dependent wildlife. This reassessment of AWQC for cyanide resulted in proposed freshwater acute and chronic criteria of 23 and 4.8 µg CN/L, respectively, which are comparable to the current freshwater acute and chronic criteria of 22 and 5.2 µg CN/L (free cyanide). For saltwater organisms, the reassessment resulted in proposed acute and chronic criteria of 20 and 4.1 µg CN/L (free cyanide), respectively, compared to the current saltwater acute and chronic criteria which are both 1.0 µg CN/L. The difference in the current and proposed saltwater criteria values is attributed to recent cyanide toxicity testing with several crab species in the genus Cancer and the copepod Acartia tonsa, which suggests this genus is not as sensitive to cyanide as previous cyanide toxicity testing indicated. A sediment-based cyanide criterion does not appear warranted if it is assumed that benthic organisms are not inordinately more sensitive to cyanide than the water column organisms that drive the basis for the proposed freshwater and saltwater criteria (the available cyanide toxicity data do not suggest that they would be), and given that bioavailable forms of cyanide are not expected to accumulate appreciably in sediment. Cyanide should thus be effectively regulated based on water column-based criteria and concentrations. PM2.5 mass concentrations were measured using multiple continuous samplers (a continuous ambient mass monitor (CAMM), a real–time ambient mass sampler (RAMS), and a drier–equipped tapered element oscillating microbalance (TEOM)) as well as a federal reference method (FRM) filter sampler in three eastern US cities. The effects of measurement systems, ambient conditions, and composition on the measured PM2.5 mass concentrations were examined at each site. Different responses to PM2.5 mass were observed by the continuous samplers with a variation of 10–30% in the average PM mass concentrations. The impacts of semivolatile particulate ammonium nitrate on PM2.5 mass concentration was apparent for those time periods when high nitrate concentration >1.62 g m−3 was measured in Atlanta. Contribution of semivolatile particulate ammonium nitrate to the ambient PM2.5 mass appeared more significant than semivolatile organic material in Atlanta. Chemical elements within calcified structures of organisms such as fish, corals, bivalves, gastropods and foraminiferal shells can provide a record of the environmental characteristics at the time of calcification. To predict accurately the environmental characteristics at the time of calcifica- tion, it is important to understand the influence of exposure time on elemental incorporation. We examined the effect of enhanced ambient strontium:calcium (Sr:Ca) (2 × and 4 × ambient concentra- tions) and different periods of exposure (2, 4, 8, 16 and 32 d) on Sr:Ca uptake and incorporation into fish otoliths of the black bream Acanthopagrus butcheri (family: Sparidae). Sr:Ca ratios (hereafter referred to as concentrations) in bream otoliths increased with increasing ambient concentrations, with the amount of Sr:Ca incorporated into otoliths being positively affected by the period of expo- sure. Saturation of Sr:Ca in otoliths occurred after 20 d of exposure. Importantly, by measuring mul- tiple variables of elemental uptake and incorporation, the relative effect of enhanced concentration and exposure time can be separated, which to date has not been possible. This research will allow for greater accuracy when interpreting environmental histories of fish.

A challenge for the next generation marine antifouling (AF) paints is to deliver minimum amounts of biocides to the environment. The candidate AF compound medetomidine is here shown to be released at very low concentrations, ie ng ml−1 day−1. Moreover, the release rate of medetomidine differs substantially depending on the formulation of the paint, while inhibition of barnacle settlement is independent of release to the ambient water, ie the paint with the lowest release rate was the most effective in impeding barnacle colonisation. This highlights the critical role of chemical interactions between biocide, paint carrier and the solid/aqueous interface for release rate and AF performance. The results are discussed in the light of differential affinity states of the biocide, predicting AF activity in terms of a high surface affinity and preserved bioavailability. This may offer a general framework for the design of low-release paint systems using biocides for protection against biofouling on marine surfaces.

Surface water quality monitoring is one of the responsibilities of a number of provincial and federal environmental departments in Canada. In Saskatchewan, the Ministry of Environment is responsible for the province water quality monitoring network. The sampling effort was initiated 40 years ago and has been ongoing since, with varying degrees of spatial and temporal coverage. The main objective of the Saskatchewan monitoring network is the assessment of ambient water quality status. In addition, one of the main uses of the generated water quality data is the calculation of a Water Quality Index. The adequacy of the monitoring network to perform these tasks needs to be validated. The objective of this study is to provide a statistical assessment of two of the monitoring network main aspects, the water quality variables and their sampling frequency. A new rationalization approach is applied for the assessment and reselection of water quality variables. The proposed approach provides, in a systematic way, the optimal combinations of variables to continue measuring, variables that may be redundant and could be considered for discontinuance, and variables that may need to be added to the list of variables being measured. The confidence interval around the mean is used as the main criterion for the sampling frequency assessment. A design chart is provided for the sampling frequency assessment, which is easy to use, and provides an initial assessment of the number of samples required to provide a mean value with a predefined error percentage.

Benzophenones (BPs) are a class of widely used UV filters, which have been frequently detected within multiple environmental matrices. Disinfection is a necessary process in water treatment processes. The transformation behaviors and toxicity changes of 14 BP-type UV filters during chlorination disinfection treatment were investigated in this study. A new index, the acute toxicity formation potential, was proposed to evaluate the toxicity changes and potential risks of BP-type UV filters during chlorination treatment. It was found that 13 of 14 BP-type UV filters exhibited toxicity decreases in the chlorination disinfection process, more or less, while one showed a toxicity increase. The toxicity changes were dependent on substitution effects, such that 2,4-di-hydroxylated or 3-hydroxylated BPs exhibited significant toxicity decreases after chlorination treatment due to the ready cleavage of the aromatic ring. Importantly, the acute toxicity changes could be duplicated in an ambient water matrix.

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is updating its aquatic life ambient water quality criteria (aqAWQC) for a number of parameters, including silver. The silver aqAWQC was last issued in 1980. At that time only an acute aqAWQC was established. With the increased reliance on water quality criteria to drive and prioritize the United State's efforts to improve water quality, the scientific basis of new and modified water quality criteria must be both strong and transparent. Although few, if any, natural waters in the United States have suffered water quality impairments because of silver, the lack of valid silver chronic toxicity data in combination with the misapplication of the current U.S. EPA guidelines on deriving chronic aqAWQC could lead to derivation of chronic criteria (by U.S. EPA) and chronic standards (by states, tribes, etc.) that are not supported by scientific data. This misapplication could result in U.S. EPA and the states listing many waters as impaired by silver where, in fact, no silver-related water quality problem exists. This Research Note reviews available information on studies of both acute and chronic silver toxicity to aquatic organisms, as well as U.S. EPA's 1985 procedure for adopting chronic water quality criteria. It identifies existing gaps in the underlying research data base and identifies additional work necessary to derive valid chronic water quality criteria and standards for silver.

We studied the effects of acidification on female sexual behavior in brown trout (Salmo trutta) and compared the results with those in hime (land-locked sockeye) salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) (Kitamura and Ikuta, 2000). The results were similar to those of sockeye salmon. Spawning brown trout were extremely sensitive to the acidity of ambient water, and nest-digging behavior was severely inhibited (p
