In studies assessing sorption of hydrophobic organic compounds (HOCs) in natural systems, the choice of an appropriate reference black carbon, which can represent environmental black carbon (BC), is essential. This study compared isotherms of two commonly available and distinct reference BCs (n-hexane soot (BCRM) and diesel particulate matter (SRM 2975)) and a natural sediment from a source with little black carbon (Lake Hartwell, SC) using 3,3',4-trichlorobiphenyl (IUPAC #35) as a model sorbate. There was greater sorptivity for PCB-35 by BCRM than by SRM 2975. The observed differences in sorption between the two reference black carbons for PCB-35 may be ascribed to the different chemical characteristics of the black carbons. Differences in pore volume distribution at16A pore width are less likely to be responsible for the observed differences in sorption. The elemental analysis confirmed that BCRM was a pure n-hexane soot because only C, H and O were measured. In contrast, SRM 2975 also contained N and S and a higher O% than BCRM. Compared to the low BC sediment, the two reference BCs had greater pore volume distributions, surface areas, total pore volumes and sorption. The observed nF (i.e., Freundlich exponent) values for PCB indicated greater linearity of the isotherms for the natural sediment than for the reference black carbons. For designing studies of sorption of HOCs in natural systems, in particular, when PCBs are contaminants of concern, results of this study can aid selection of the appropriate reference BCs.

Plutonium oxidation state distribution on Yucca Mountain tuff and synthetic pyrolusite (beta-MnO2) suspensions was measured using synchrotron X-ray micro-spectroscopy and microimaging techniques as well as ultrafiltration/solventextraction techniques. Plutonium sorbed to the tuff was preferentially associated with manganese oxides. For both Yucca Mountain tuff and synthetic pyrolusite, Pu(IV) or Pu(V) was initially oxidized to more mobile Pu(V/VI), but over time, the less mobile Pu(IV) became the predominant oxidation state of the sorbed Pu. The observed stability of Pu(IV) on oxidizing surfaces (e.g., pyrolusite), is proposed to be due to the formation of a stable hydrolyzed Pu(IV) surface species. These findings have important implications in estimating the risk associated with the geological burial of radiological waste in areas containing Mn-bearing minerals, such as at the Yucca Mountain or the Hanford Sites, because plutonium will be predominantly in a much less mobile oxidation state (i.e., Pu(IV)) than previously suggested (i.e., Pu(V/VI).

Polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB)-contaminated sediment cores taken from five locations in Lake Hartwell, SC, with an increasing distance from the point source were evaluated for the presence of in situ reductive dechlorination of PCBs on the basis of a comparative congener-specific analysis of PCB distribution profiles between historical (1987) and current (1998) sediments from the same sites. A layer of 1998 sediment that was equivalent to 1987 sediment was determined by direct comparison of total PCB depth profiles after correction for any sedimentation that occurred at each location since 1987. Natural capping of contaminated sediments with the continued deposition of new sediments was observed in all locations except the one farthest from the source area. The residual PCB congeners accumulated in the field samples did not vary from site to site. Certain PCB congeners (e.g., 236-24 + 34-34, 245-25, and 23-4 CB) decreased with time and with depth along with an increase in lower chlorinated PCB congeners in all sampling locations. A similarity in distribution profiles between dechlorinated PCBs in laboratory microcosms and in the field samples was observed. These results provide supporting evidence that in situ reductive dechlorination has occurred in the Twelve Mile Creek arm of Lake Hartwell. Several sediment layers, particularlythe sites with highest PCB concentration, showed similar PCB distribution profiles between 1987 and 1998. An additional change in chlorine distribution between 1987 and 1998 at most "equivalent" depths was not observed. The ortho- and para-substituted congeners that accumulated during dechlorination of Aroclor 1254 after nearly 1 yr of incubation in the laboratory were the prominent residual products in all field samples. At a few locations and depths, evidence for dechlorination at surprisingly low concentrations (1-5 ppm) was observed. These results confirm that in situ reductive dechlorination of PCBs is operating at a very slow rate and may have been at a plateau since 1987 for certain depths and certain locations.

An estimated 330 metric tons of U are buried in the radioactive waste Subsurface Disposal Area (SDA) at the Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory (INEEL). An assessment of U transport parameters is being performed to decrease the uncertainty in risk and dose predictions derived from computer simulations of U fate and transport to the underlying Snake River Plain Aquifer. Uranium adsorption isotherms were measured for 14 sediment samples collected from sedimentary interbeds underlying the SDA. The adsorption data were fit with a Freundlich isotherm. The Freundlich n parameter is statistically identical for all 14 sediment samples and the Freundlich K f parameter is correlated to sediment surface area ( r 2 =0.80). These findings suggest an efficient approach to material characterization and implementation of a spatially variable reactive transport model that requires only the measurement of sediment surface area. To expand the potential applicability of the measured isotherms, a model is derived from the empirical observations by incorporating concepts from surface complexation theory to account for the effects of solution chemistry. The resulting model is then used to predict the range of adsorption conditions to be expected in the vadose zone at the SDA based on the range in measured pore water chemistry. Adsorption in the deep vadose zone is predicted to be stronger than in near-surface sediments because the total dissolved carbonate decreases with depth.

Lake Hartwell is a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reservoir system located on the state line between South Carolina and Georgia, USA. The lake was contaminated with an estimated 200 metric tons of polychlorinated biphenyls ([PCBs]; mainly Aroclor 1016 and 1254), and the entire Twelve Mile Creek watershed and the Seneca River arm of Lake Hartwell were placed on the National Priorities List. Monitored natural attenuation was chosen as a remedy for the contaminated sediment. The relatively warm temperature of Lake Hartwell and lack of significant cocontaminants along with the PCBs distinguish this site from others that have been studied for microbially mediated reductive dechlorination. Microcosm studies were conducted with sediment from two locations in the Twelve Mile Creek arm and confirmed the presence of indigenous microorganisms capable of reductively dechlorinating Aroclor 1254, which contains predominantly tetra-, penta-, and hexachlorobiphenyl. The average number of total chlorines per biphenyl decreased from 4.8 to 4.9 to 2.9 to 3.0, following 250 to 260 d of incubation. The maximum observed dechlorination rates were 0.29 to 0.87 microg-atoms Cl- per gram sediment dry weight per week. The onset of dechlorination activity correlated strongly with maximum methanogenesis, which occurred without a lag in samples from the site that showed signs of in situ fermentation activity. Dechlorination occurred primarily at the meta and para positions (58-63% removal), with no apparent decrease in ortho chlorines. This most closely resembles pattern M, characterized by preferential removal of unflanked and flanked meta chlorines. The microcosm results are consistent with sediment cores analyzed from the same locations, which indicate accumulation with depth of the same ortho- and para-substituted congeners. It therefore appears that the success of monitored natural attenuation for Lake Hartwell will hinge on covering the recalcitrant PCBs with a sufficient amount of uncontaminated sediment to isolate them from the food chain.

The enantioselectivity of microbial reductive dechlorination of chiral PCBs in sediments from Lake Hartwell, SC, was determined by microcosm studies and enantiomer-specific GC analysis. Sediments from two locations in the vicinity of the highest levels of PCB contamination were used as inocula. Dechlorination activity was monitored by concentration decreases in the spiked chiral PCBs and formation of dechlorination products using both achiral and chiral chromatography. Live microcosms spiked with PCB132 (234-236) exhibited dechlorination of PCB132 to PCB91 (236-24) and PCB51 (24-26). Meta dechlorination was the dominant mechanism. Microcosms spiked with PCB149 (245-236) exhibited preferential para dechlorination of PCB149 to PCB95 (236-25), followed by meta dechlorination to PCB53 (25-26) and subsequently PCB19 (26-2). Dechlorination of chiral PCB132 and PCB149 was not enantioselective. In Aroclor 1254-spiked microcosms, reductive dechlorination of PCB149 also was nonenantioselective. These results suggest that dechlorinating enzymes responsible for the dehalogenation of the chiral PCB132 and PCB149 congeners bind the two enantiomers equally. Reductive dechlorination of PCB91 and PCB95, however, occurred in an enantioselective manner, indicating that the dechlorinating enzymes for these PCBs are enantiomer-specific. The chlorine substitution pattern on the biphenyl ring appears to influence whether reductive dechlorination of chiral PCB congeners is enantioselective. Enantioselective PCB dechlorination by the microbial population of Lake Hartwell sediments occurs for select chiral PCBs; thus, certain chiral PCBs might be useful as markers for in situ reductive dechlorination.

The effects of selected cosolvents ethyl alcohol (EtOH), isopropyl alcohol (IPA), and tertbutyl alcohol (TBA) on the Henry's law constant (H) of tetrachloroethylene (PCE) in aqueous solutions were investigated using the static headspace method. Alcohols in solution at a concentration around 20% and above acted as cosolvents increasing the aqueous solubility of PCE, which resulted in lower H values for PCE as compared to the value of H in deionized water. TBA, the most hydrophobic of the three alcohols, exhibited the strongest cosolvent effects, while EtOH had the weakest effects. A ln-linear relationship was observed between H and the volumetric fraction of alcohol added. Investigation of the solubilization of PCE in alcohol solutions confirmed the cosolvent trend observed for the three alcohols. A ln-ln relationship was observed between H and the enhanced solubility of PCE at a particular alcohol concentration. It was also observed that the value of H is a function of the enhanced solubility regardless of the type of cosolvent used. The results from this research further define the behavior of PCE in alcohol flooding solutions used in the remediation of PCE contaminated media.

A pilot scale field test of non-aqueous phase liquid (NAPL) removal using high molecular weight alcohols was conducted at Operable Unit 1, Hill Air Force Base, Utah. Petroleum hydrocarbons and spent solvents were disposed of in chemical disposal pits at this site, and these materials are now present in the subsurface in the form of a light non-aqueous phase liquid (LNAPL). This LNAPL is a complex mixture of aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbons, chlorinated solvents, and other compounds. The field experiment was performed in a 5 m by 3 m confined test cell, formed by driving interlocking sheet pile walls through the contaminated zone into an underlying clay. The test involved the injection and extraction of about four pore volumes (1 pore volume=7000 L) of a mixture of 80% tert-butanol and 15% n-hexanol. The contaminants were removed by a combination of NAPL mobilization and enhanced dissolution, and the results of postflood soil coring indicate better than 90% removal of the more soluble contaminants (trichloroethane, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylenes, trimethylbenzene, naphthalene) and 70–80% removal of less soluble compounds (decane and undecane). The results of preflood and postflood NAPL partitioning tracer tests show nearly 80% removal of the total NAPL content from the test cell. The field data suggest that a somewhat higher level of removal could be achieved with a longer alcohol injection.

Partitioning interwell tracer tests (PITTs) that were developed by the petroleum industry are being used to characterize the extent and amount of subsurface contamination by nonaqueous phase liquids (NAPLs). A promising application of PITTS is to estimate the volume of contamination removed by various remediation technologies by conducting the tests before and after remediation efforts. Laboratory experiments with a light NAPL from Hill Air Force Base, UT, the site of the SERDP demonstration of innovative technologies, indicate that the type of remediation technology used changes the partitioning of the tracer compounds between the NAPL and the aqueous phase. Partitioning coefficients (K{sub nw}) that were measured by static and dynamic methods showed a statistically significant change in value after the NAPL was treated in batchwise washes with a cosolvent that simulated enhanced dissolution. In contrast, the value of K{sub nw} showed little change before and after the NAPL was treated in a column with a cosolvent that simulated mobilization. The results indicate that PITTS could significantly underestimate the volume remaining of a complex NAPL like the Hill AFB material for an operation that employs the solubilization mechanism without a corrected K{sub nw} for the post-treatment test.

Over the last fifteen years the Savannah River Site (SRS) in South Carolina, USA, was selected as the site of three new plutonium facilities: the Mixed Oxide Fuel Fabrication Facility, Pit Disassembly and Conversion Facility, and the Pu Immobilization Plant. In order to assess the potential human and environmental risk associated with these recent initiatives, improved understanding of the fate and transport of Pu in the SRS subsurface environment is necessary. The hypothesis of this study was that the more mobile forms of Pu, Pu(V) and Pu(VI), would be reduced to the less mobile Pu(III/IV) oxidation states under ambient SRS subsurface conditions. Laboratory-scale dynamic flow experiments (i.e., column studies) indicated that Pu(V) was very mobile in SRS sediments. At higher pH values the mobility of Pu decreased and the fraction of Pu that became irreversibly sorbed to the sediment increased, albeit, only slightly. Conversely, these column experiments showed that Pu(IV) was essentially immobile and was largely irreversibly sorbed to the sediment. More than 100 batch sorption experiments were also conducted with four end-member sediments, i.e., sediments that include the chemical, textural, and mineralogical properties likely to exist in the SRS. These tests were conducted as a function of initial Pu oxidation state, pH, and contact time and consistently demonstrated that although Pu(V) sorbed initially quite weakly to sediments, it slowly, over the course of

The effect of the spatial variability of K d on calculations of contaminant travel time in the vadose zone was determined. Depth discrete measurements of K d were made for a suite of radionuclides ( 109 Cd, 57 Co, 60 Co, 85 Sr, 137 Cs, and 88 Y) utilizing a sediment core from the E-Area at the Savannah River Site. The K d ’s were ordered as 85 Sr 2+ 137 Cs + 109 Cd 2+ 57 Co 2+ = 60 Co 2+ 88 Y 3+ and the values generally fell below or near the lowest quartile of values reported in the literature. Correlations were generally weak between soil properties and K d values. Most importantly, all of the K d distributions could be reasonably approximated as log-normal. Deterministic and stochastic calculations of contaminant travel time to the water table were made. The deterministic calculations were based on each of three conceptual models of the vadose zone: complete stratification (17 strata, each with a different K d ), two strata (two sections of the vadose zone, each characterized by a single, average K d ), and unstratified (a single zone with an average K d ). Stochastic calculations were based on log-normal fits to the K d data. The two strata model generally yielded travel times 2× greater than those in the completely stratified model. The unstratified model yielded travel times that were between 3 and 5 times greater than the completely stratified model. The stochastic mean travel times were comparable to those of the two strata model.

Enantiomer fractions (EFs) of seven chiral polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were measured in dated sediment cores of Lake Hartwell (SC, USA) and Lake Ontario (USA) to detect, quantify, and gain insight regarding microbial reductive dechlorination of PCBs in lake sediments with high and low concentrations, respectively. Lake Hartwell sediments had high total PCBs (5-60 microg/g), with significantly nonracemic EFs that generally were consistent with those from previous laboratory microcosm reductive dechlorination experiments using sediments from these sites. Thus, stereoselective reductive dechlorination had occurred in situ, including at total PCB concentrations of less than the threshold of approximately 30 to 80 microg/g suggested as being necessary for reductive dechlorination. Enantiomer fractions of PCBs 91, 95, 132, and 136 in Lake Hartwell cores were significantly correlated both with concentrations of those individual congeners and with total PCB concentration for some sites. This result indicates that enantioselective microbial dechlorination activity increases with higher concentrations within sediments for these congeners. Enantiomer composition reversed with depth for PCBs 91, 132, and 176, suggesting that multiple microbial populations may be present within the same core that are enantioselectively dechlorinating PCBs. Such observations indicate that concentration and time are not the only factors affecting biotransformation, complicating prediction of enantioselectivity. Comparison of EFs with dates suggested biotransformation half-lives of approximately 30 years, which is on the same time scale as sequestration by burial. In contrast, Lake Ontario sediments (maximum total PCBs, 400 ng/g) had racemic or near-racemic amounts of most congeners throughout the core profile, which is consistent with achiral indicators suggesting no microbial biotransformation within Lake Ontario sediments. Thresholds for reductive dechlorination may exist, but they would be at concentrations of less than 30 to 80 microg/g.

Aqueous Pu concentrations and oxidation state transformations as a function of pH were quantified and compared between sorption/desorption studies and literature solubility values. When Pu(V) was added to a red subsurface sandy-clay-loam sediment collected near Aiken, South Carolina, 99% of the Pu sorbed to the sediment within 48 h. Throughout the study,or = 94% of the Puaq remained as Pu(V), whereasor = 6% was Pu(VI) andor = 1% was Pu(IV). This is in stark contrast to the sorbed Pu which was almost exclusively in the +4 oxidation state. The fraction of aqueous Pu (Puaq/Pusolid) decreased by2 orders-of-magnitude when the contact time was increased from 1- to 33-days, presumably the result of Pu(V) reduction to Pu(IV). The desorption studies were conducted with a sediment that had been in contact with Pu (originally as PuIV(NO3)4) for 24 years. At near neutral pH, a decrease of 1-pH unit resulted in almost an order-of-magnitude increase in the concentration of Puaq (7.5 x 10(-10) M at pH 7 and 3.6 x 10(-9) M at pH 6). Similar to the sorption experiment,or = 96% of the Puaq was Pu(V/VI). The Puaq concentrations from the desorption experiment were similar to those of the Pu(V) amended sorption studies that were permitted to equilibrate for 33 days, suggesting that the latter had reached steady state. The Puaq concentrations as a function of pH followed near identical trends with literature solubility values for PuO2(am), except that the desorption values were lower by a fixed amount, suggesting either Pu sorption was occurring in this sediment system or that a more crystalline, less soluble form of Pu existed in the sediment than in the literature water-PuO2(am) system. Based on Pu sorption experiments and measured sediment surface charge properties as a function of pH, the latter explanation appears more likely. pH had a more pronounced effect on solubility and Puaq concentrations than on sediment charge density (or Puaq oxidation state distribution). Slight changes in system pH can have a large impact on Pu solubility and the tendency of Pu to sorb to sediment, thereby influencing Pu subsurface mobility.

Changes in aqueous- and solid-phase plutonium oxidation state were monitored over time in hematite (alpha-Fe2O3) and goethite (alpha-FeOOH) suspensions containing 239Pu(V)-amended 0.01 M NaCl. Solid-phase oxidation state distribution was quantified by leaching plutonium into the aqueous phase and applying an ultrafiltration/solvent extraction technique. The technique was verified using oxidation state analogues of plutonium and sediment-free controls of known Pu oxidation state. Batch kinetic experiments were conducted at hematite and goethite concentrations between 10 and 500 m2 L(-1) in the pH range of 3-8. Surface-mediated reduction of Pu(V) was observed for both minerals at pH values of 4.5 and greater. At pH 3 no adsorption of Pu(V) was observed on either goethite or hematite; consequently, no reduction was observed. For hematite, adsorption of Pu(V) was the rate-limiting step in the adsorption/reduction process. In the pH range of 5-8, the overall removal of Pu(V) from the system (solid and aqueous phases) was found to be approximately second order with respect to hematite concentration and of order -0.39 with respect to the hydrogen ion concentration. The overall reaction rate constant (k(rxn)), including both adsorption and reduction of Pu(V), was 1.75+/-2.05 x 10(-10) (m(-2) L)(-2.08) (mol(-1) L)(-0.39) (s(-1)). In contrast to hematite, Pu(V) adsorption to goethite occurred rapidly relative to reduction. At a given pH,the reduction rate was approximately independent of the goethite concentration, although the hydrogen ion concentration (pH) had only a slight effect on the overall reaction rate. For goethite, the overall reaction rates at pH 5 and pH 8 were 6.0 x 10(-5) and 1.5 x 10(-4) s(-1), respectively. For hematite, the reaction rate increased by 3 orders of magnitude across the same pH range.

Changes in aqueous- and solid-phase Pu oxidation state were monitored over time in magnetite (Fe3O4) suspensions containing 239Pu(V)-amended 0.01 M NaCl. Oxidation state distribution was determined by leaching of Pu into an aqueous phase followed by an ultrafiltration/solvent extraction technique. The capability of the technique to measure Pu oxidation state distribution was verified using 230Th(IV), 237Np(V), and 233U(VI) as oxidation state analogues. Reduction of Pu(V) was observed at all pH values (pH 3 to 8) and magnetite concentrations (10 to 100 m2 L(-1)). In the pH range 5 to 8, adsorption was a rate-limiting step, and reduction was mediated by the solid phase; at pH 3 reduction occurred in the aqueous phase. The overall reaction (describing both adsorption and reduction of Pu(V)) was found to be approximately first order with respect to the magnetite concentration and of order -0.34+/-0.02 with respect to the hydrogen ion concentration. Assuming first order dependence with respect to Pu, the overall reaction rate constant was calculated as k(rxn) = 4.79+/-0.62 x 10(-8) (m(-2) L)0.99(mol(-1) L)-0.34(s(-1)). The Pu(IV) solid-phase species became more stable over time.

Lysimeter and laboratory studies were conducted to identify the controlling chemical processes influencing Pu(IV) mobility through the vadose zone. A 52-L lysimeter containing sediment from the Savannah River Site, South Carolina and solid PuIV(NO3)4 was left exposed to natural wetting and drying cycles for 11 years before the lysimeter sediment was sampled. Pu had traveled 10 cm, with >95% of the Pu remaining within 1.25 cm of the source. Laboratory studies showed that the sediment quickly reduced Pu(V) to Pu(IV) (the pseudo-first-order reduction rate constant, Kobs, was 0.11 h(-1)). Of particular interest was that this same sediment could be induced to release very low concentrations of sorbed Pu under oxidizing conditions, presumably by oxidation of sorbed Pu(IV) to the more mobile Pu(V) species. Transport modeling supported the postulation that Pu oxidation occurred in the lysimeter sediment; the inclusion of an oxidation term in the model produced simulations that capture the Pu depth profile data. By not including the oxidation process in the model, Pu mobility was grossly underestimated by a factor of 3.5. It is concluded that both oxidation and reduction mechanisms can play an important role in Pu transportthrough the vadose zone and should be considered when evaluating disposal of Pu-bearing wastes.

Lake sediments contaminated with polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were purged using a gas stripping technique to estimate desorption rate constants. Desorption profiles and modeling of the data clearly show a two-step release of PCBs from sediment suspensions that can be described as a labile (fast) release followed by a non-labile (slow) release. Data are summarized by labile and non-labile rate constants and by mass in each phase as a function of suspended solids concentration for twelve pure congeners and nine co-eluting data sets (twenty-one chromatograph peaks total). Labile desorption rate constants range from 113 days(-1) to 1.43 days(-1) for the 100 mg/l sediment suspension, from 67.7 days(-1) to 2.45 days(-1) for the 1000 mg/l sediment suspension, and from 8.41 days(-1) to 0.946 days(-1) for the 5000 mg/l sediment suspension. Labile rate constants consistently decreased with increasing suspended solids, and, in general, decreased with increasing degree of chlorination (reflected in increasing retention time in the chromatogram). No consistent trend was observed for the non-labile rate constants with suspended solids concentration or degree of chlorination. The average non-labile rate constant for the PCB congeners studied here was 0.154 days(-1) (s.d.=0.158; n=63). The distribution between the labile and non-labile phases also failed to indicate dependence on suspended solids concentration, chlorine substitution pattern, or molecular weight of the congener, although the data from the 5000 mg/l suspension consistently contained less labile components. The average distributions (n=63) were 60.1% in the labile phase and 39.9% in the non-labile phase.

Sorption of alpha-endosulfan by kaolinite and montmorillonite alone and in the presence of sorbed and dissolved humic acid (HA) was investigated (pH 8 and 25 degrees C). Three types of HA, Elliot soil HA (EHA), Peat HA (PHA), and Summit Hill HA (SHHA), were used to represent typical humic substances found in soils. For sorption of HA by either mineral, Freundlich sorption coefficient (K(f)) values appeared to decrease in the order of EHA > PHA > SHHA, which followed increasing polarity (expressed as the O/C atomic ratio) and decreasing percent-carbon content. For both clays, sorption of alpha-endosulfan by the HA mineral complex was greater than for sorption by the clay alone. Sorption of alpha-endosulfan by the HA mineral complexes followed the same order as the K(f) of the HAs (EHA > PHA > SHHA). Based on the amount of HA adsorbed by each mineral, organic carbon partition coefficients (K(oc)) were determined for sorption of alpha-endosulfan by two of the HA mineral complexes. The value of K(oc) for alpha-endosulfan sorption was greater for kaolinite EHA than kaolinite SHHA. However, the opposite trend was found with the montmorillonite HA complexes. Montmorillonite appeared to sorb alpha-endosulfan and/or HA with higher affinity than kaolinite, which likely is due to its 2:1 layer structure and higher surface area. Sorption of endosulfan diol, a hydrolysis product, by the minerals was much less than the parent pesticide.

Desorption of PCBs from sediment can significantly affect the ultimate fate and effects of PCBs in aquatic systems. Using a gas purging technique to strip soluble and sorbed polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) from solutions and sediment suspensions, Henry's law constants, approach to equilibrium, and desorption rate constants for four PCB congeners were measured. Henry's law constants were on the order of 10 −4 m 3 atm mole −1 . Desorption rate constants measured for a predominantly kaolinitic, low-organic carbon sediment were on the order of 0.03–0.1 days −1 . In contrast, desorption rate constants measured for a sediment composed of montmorillonite with a 3% organic carbon content were on the order of 0.009–0.04 days −1 . Desorption data suggest that equilibration times for PCBs with low chlorine content are on the order of six weeks, and months to years for PCBs with a significantly higher chlorine content.

Henry's law constants (HLCs) have been experimentally determined for 17 polychlorobiphenyl (PCB) congeners by a gas-purging technique, with results ranging from 0.3 {times} 10{sup {minus}4} to 8.97 {times} 10{sup {minus}4} atm{center dot}m{sup 3}/mol and an average value of 3.53 {times}10{sup {minus}4} atm{center dot}m{sup 3}/mol for the congeners studied. The experimental results are in good agreement with previously published values. For the entire group of congeners studied, measured HLCs were not correlated with molecular weight but did appear directly related to chlorine substitution pattern. Increasing HLCs coincided with greater degrees of ortho-chlorine substitution within a molecular weight class. This trend may be useful to relate individual HLCs to chlorine substitution patterns for the remaining PCB congeners.

A source of error in lithium determinations from commonly used chemically hardened glassware is described. This contaminating source may contribute up to a thirty-fold error, depending on the levels being analyzed.
