Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are persistent and bio-accumulative substances that have many adverse effects on human bodies. This study investigated the PFASs distribution characteristics in urine samples of workers from an acrylic fiber plant and a chemical plant. It was found that perfluorobutanoic acid (PFBA) was the predominant PFASs both in urine samples from the chemical plant (detection frequency: 86.52%; median value: 39.01 ng/mL) and the acrylic fiber plant (detection frequency: 88.16%; median value: 44.36 ng/mL). Meanwhile, perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) were detected with very low frequencies and low concentrations. Furthermore, the results showed that PFASs levels in urine samples of workers from different units of the plants were quite different. PFASs concentrations of urine samples in males were higher than those in females, especially for PFBA, PFHxA, and PFDoA. The age had limited effects on the PFASs distribution in urine samples in this study, as short-chain PFASs were the dominant compounds. The correlations between PFASs concentrations in urine and gender/ages of workers were finally analyzed by Person correlation. The overall results may indicate that short-chain PFASs (such as: PFBA and PFBS) were becoming dominant for human exposure, especially occupational workers.

Numerous micropollutants, especially endocrine-disrupting compounds (EDCs), can pollute natural aquatic environments causing great concern for human and ecosystem health. While most of the conversation revolves around estrogen and androgen, glucocorticoids (GCs) are also prevalent in natural waters. Despite the fact that GCs play a crucial role in both inflammatory and immunologic development activities, they are also detected in natural waters and considered as one of the EDCs. Although many researchers have mentioned the adverse effect of GCs on aquatic organisms, a complete management technology to remove these pollutants from surface and coastal waters is yet to be established. In the current study, six glucocorticoids (prednisone, prednisolone, cortisone, cortisol, dexamethasone, and 6R-methylprednisolone) have been selected according to their higher detection frequency in environmental waters. The concentration of selected GCs ranged from 0.05 ng/L to 433 ng/L and their removal efficiency ranged from 10% to 99% depending on the water source and associated removal technologies. Although advanced technologies are available for achieving successful removal of GCs, associated operational and economic considerations make implementation of these processes unsustainable. Further studies are necessary to resolve the entry routes of GCs compounds into the surface water or drinking water permanently as well as employ sustainable detection and removal technologies.

The phthalate concentrations in dust from undergraduate dormitories, classrooms, and homes in Beijing, China, were measured in April 2017. We analyzed the characteristics of phthalates in dust from three environments. In addition, we estimated the daily intake of phthalates via three pathways using Monte Carlo simulations. The detection frequency of eight phthalates in dust ranges from 74.5 to 100%. Di (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), di-n-butyl phthalate (DnBP), and di-isobutyl phthalate (DiBP) are the most abundant phthalates. The median proportion of DEHP in dust is the highest, ranging from 67.1 to 72.9%. The PMF results indicated that two, four, and three types of phthalate sources exist in home, dormitory, and classroom, respectively. The differences in the phthalate concentrations between sunny and shaded rooms and urban and suburban classrooms are insignificant, whereas that between male and female dormitories is significant. The total daily intake of DEHP, DnBP, and DiBP ranges from 97.3 to 336 ng/ (kg·day). The oral intake for DEHP in classrooms and the dermal intake of DnBP and DiBP in homes are the highest. The carcinogenic risk of DEHP to university students is the highest in classrooms and the total carcinogenic risk of the three environments is 4.70 × 10-6.

Elucidation of the chemical components of airborne fine particulate matter (PM2.5) facilitates the characterization of atmospheric contamination sources and associated human exposure risks. In the present study, we employed a high-throughput analytical approach to investigate the abundance and distribution of 163 plastic additives in ambient PM2.5 collected from 94 different sites across the Pearl River Delta region, China. These chemicals are from six categories, including organophosphate esters (OPEs), phthalate esters (PAEs), PAE replacements, bisphenol analogues, UV stabilizers, and antioxidants. Ninety-three of them exhibited a detection frequency greater than 50% in PM2.5, while the combined concentrations of target plastic additives ranged from 610 to 49,400 μg/g (median: 3500 μg/g) across sites. By category, concentrations of PAEs (median: 2710 μg/g) were one to three orders of magnitude greater than those of other groups, followed by PAE replacements (540 μg/g) and OPEs (76.2 μg/g). Chemical-dependent exposure risks to PM2.5-bound plastic additives were characterized via the estimated daily intake and hazard quotient (HQ) approaches, which resulted in two different risk prioritization systems. Although the HQ approach suggested no or very low health concerns when considering individual chemicals, the complexity of co-concurrent chemicals in PM2.5 raises the concern on potential health risks from exposure to airborne particles and a cocktail of chemical components.

Alkyl phenol polyethoxylates (APEOs) are a major group of high production volume chemicals, extensively used as nonionic surfactants in industrial, agricultural and domestic sectors. These surfactants and its respective metabolites are found to be persistent and toxic. Mainly, they act as endocrine disruptors by mimicking the natural hormones. India being a developing country, witnesses pollution due to various industries including tannery. In the present study, sediment samples were collected from the Vellore district of Tamil Nadu, India to investigate the occurrence of APEOs. The sediments were extracted by ultrasonication and analyzed in a liquid chromatography mass spectrometer. Octyl phenol ethoxylates (OPEOs) were not observed in any of the samples. Nonyl phenol ethoxylates (NPEOs) were detected in the range of ND – 36 mg/kg with 85 % detection frequency. The occurrence of NPEOs in sediment indicates its wide usage in tannery and its partitioning behavior in environment. The levels of NPEOs in the study were found to be unsafe according to the sediment guidelines of various studies. Since NPEOs were observed in sediment samples, possibilities of occurrence of their monomers and metabolites cannot be ruled out. Therefore, further studies are warranted for understanding the levels of monomers and metabolites in order to ascertain the environmental risks more appropriately.

The impact of industrial activities on atmospheric volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the Sihwa-Banwol complexes, i.e., the largest industrial area in Korea, was investigated. More than 60 VOCs were determined from 850 samples collected from four sites in and around the complexes through a 2-year monitoring campaign from 2005 to 2007. The VOCs of particular concern found in the area were benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylenes, trichloroethylene, and formaldehyde, given their toxicity, concentration, and detection frequency. Toluene was the most abundant one. The VOC concentration rankings were consistent with their emission rankings. Most VOCs had higher concentrations at the industrial sites than at residential sites, indicating a significant impact of industrial emissions. The ambient levels of benzene and formaldehyde were additionally affected by vehicular emissions and secondary formation, respectively. Overall, the VOC levels increased in winter and at night, because of the local weather conditions. In contrast, the formaldehyde concentration increased in summer, owing to its secondary formation in the atmosphere. The ambient VOC levels in Sihwa-Banwol were higher than those in other parts of Korea. Additionally, the cumulative cancer risks posed by the toxic VOCs exceeded a tolerable risk level of 1 × 10−4 in not only the industrial areas but also the residential areas. The sum of the non-cancer risks in both areas significantly exceeded the threshold criterion of 1. The large amounts of aromatic compounds emitted from the industrial complexes are believed to play a crucial role in the elevated levels of surface ozone in the Seoul metropolitan area during the summer season. Therefore, comprehensive measures for controlling the VOC emissions in the Sihwa-Banwol area need to be prioritized to reduce the health risks for residents of not only this area but also the capital Seoul and its surrounding areas.

The present study investigated the sources and fates of methylsiloxanes and their brominated products in one e-waste recycling area of China. During thermal (30-1000 °C) recycling experiments for printed wiring boards (PWBs), besides volatile methylsiloxanes (D4, D5, and D6), their monobrominated products, that is, D3D(CH2Br), D4D(CH2Br), and D5D(CH2Br), were also found by quadrupole time-of-flight gas chromatography-mass spectrometry to have 2-3 orders of magnitude lower emissions (0.31-1.3 μg/g) than those (18.1-866 μg/g) of parent methylsiloxanes. Overall, the fastest emissions of methylsiloxanes and bromo-methylsiloxanes occurred at 300-400 and 400-500 °C, respectively, accounting for 35.3-51.0 and 39.4-82.1% of their total emission. In the e-waste recycling area, concentrations of D4-D6 were 1.1-75.0 μg/g dw [detection frequency (df) = 100%] in 31 dusts from PWB treatment workshops, while limits of detection (LOD) < 683 ng/g dw (df = 69-100%) in 48 surrounding soils were up to 3 orders of magnitudes higher than those in reference areas. Liquid chromatography high-resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS) shows great potential for expanding our understanding of relevant unknown chemical components present within complex environmental mixtures. This study identified potentially endocrine active components within Minnesota lakewater by prioritizing LC-HRMS features uniquely present at sunfish spawning habitats where male fish showed signs of estrogen agonism. Porewater samples from four locations within the same lake were analyzed using liquid chromatography quadrupole time of flight mass spectrometry (LC-QToF/MS) with positive (ESI+) and negative (ESI-) electrospray ionization. Plasma vitellogenin concentrations of captured male sunfish was used to designate sites as either endocrine active (ACT; 2 sites) or reference (REF; 2 sites). Assuming unique chemical presence at active sites contributed to endocrine activity, features at significantly higher intensities (p-value 0.05, t-value t-critical, log-fold change 0.1; equal variance t-test of log2 transformed data) in ACT sites were then compiled into a suspect search list for feature identification. Adducts and isotopes of prioritized features were deprioritized using pattern recognizing algorithms using mass, retention time, and intensity. Feature identities were reported according to established confidence metrics using spectral libraries and elemental composition algorithms. This LC-HRMS approach identified a number of features omitted by targeted analysis with higher relative abundances in ACT sites, including plant essential oils, fatty acids, and mycotoxins. Multivariate analysis determined whether features were either present at both sites (AB) or unique to individual ACT sites (A or B). Detection frequency across datasets indicated bias in feature prioritization influenced by the chosen sampling method and sample acquisition mode. The majority of features prioritized by this workflow remain tentatively identified or unidentified masses of interest, reflective of current limitations in shared spectral libraries for soft ionization analyses. Strategies similar to this workflow have the potential to reduce bias in database-driven toxicological prioritization frameworks.

Levels of suspended particulate matter (PM) of both fractions PM₁₀ and PM2.5 in ambient air were monitored in three areas of Gran La Plata: industrial, urban, and residential (2017-2019). Associated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and nitropolycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (NPAHs) to PM were also determined and possible emission sources were identified. Assessment of health risk to PM exposure and associated compounds was realized. Results showed a decrease in levels of PM₁₀ in each area along the period studied, especially in the industrial area. Decreases in PM2.5 levels were also observed in urban and residential areas over the years, although the trend is not as marked as with PM₁₀ levels. Then, PM2.5 levels in the industrial area have remained practically constant. The 89% of both PM₁₀ and PM2.5 annual mean exceeds the WHO reference values. The presence of most of the 16 US EPA priority PAHs studied was found with a detection frequency greater than 60% and it was possible to identify the importance of the contributions of vehicular emissions as predominant sources of PAH emission. From the calculations of the risk of contracting cancer throughout life (LCR), in the case of adults, the US EPA limits were not complied in the industrial and urban areas and in both fractions of PM. Estazolam (EZ) is a long-acting benzodiazepine (BZD) drug with high clinical consumption in China to treat anxiety, depression and other syndromes. Recently, it has been found as a leading potentially inappropriate medication among hospitalized elderly patients, increasing the risk of falls. It is discharged into the aquatic environment after use and has been frequently detected, ultimately affecting the safety of drinking water. In the present study, the reaction of EZ during chlorination disinfection was investigated in detail with regard to its transformation and kinetics. By means of ultra-performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole time-of-flight tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-QTOF-MS), four main disinfection byproducts (DBPs) were tentatively identified, and the transformation pathways were speculated to be cleavage at the imine linkage and oxidation on the diazepinone ring. The chlorination reaction rate in the pseudo-first-order kinetic model was significantly affected by free available chlorine (FAC) and pH. The increase in pH value led to a decrease in the reaction rate, while a higher dosage of chlorine resulted in a faster kinetic rate. We further estimated the potential toxicities of EZ and its DBPs using quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) software tools. DBPs exhibited much higher toxicity than EZ and exhibited developmental toxicity and mutagenicity. Finally, a total of 108 drinking water samples were collected in the wet and dry seasons to determine actual residue changes in real environmental conditions. The detection frequency was 29% for EZ, and the highest concentration of 0.60 ng L−1 was found for its DBPs in tap water. No seasonal variations in concentration were observed. Overall, the results indicate that EZ and its DBPs may persist in drinking water, posing potential risks to public health.

Animal studies have revealed that exposure to neonicotinoid insecticides (NNIs) could compromise male reproductive function; however, related data on the occurrence of NNIs and their specific metabolites in human seminal plasma are scarce. To explore the potential effects of NNI exposure on male semen quality, we determined the concentrations of NNIs and some of their metabolites (collectively defined as mNNIs) in seminal plasma samples collected from men (n = 191) who visited a fertility clinic in Shijiazhuang, North China from 2018 to 2019. Associations between the mNNI concentrations and semen quality parameters were assessed using linear regression models, adjusting for important covariates. In the seminal plasma samples, desmethyl-acetamiprid (DM-ACE, detection frequency: 98.4%), imidacloprid-olefin (IMI-olefin, detection frequency: 86.5%), and desmethyl-clothianidin (DM-CLO, detection frequency: 70.8%) were frequently detected at median concentrations of 0.052, 0.003, and 0.007 ng/mL, respectively; meanwhile other compounds were detected at less than the method detection limits. In the single-mNNI models, the IMI-olefin concentration was associated with decreased progressive motility [IMI-olefin concentration: percent change (%Δ) = −17.0; 95% confidence interval (CI) = −30.3, −0.92; the highest tertile compared with the lowest tertile: %Δ = −21.1; 95% CI = −37.5, −0.23]. Similar results were found in the multiple-mNNIs models. No other inverse associations were found between the other mNNI concentrations and semen quality parameters. This is the first study to identify the occurrence of mNNIs in the seminal plasma and the potential associations of their concentrations with human semen quality parameters. These findings imply an inverse association between the IMI-olefin concentration and semen quality.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs), with negative impacts on the aquatic ecosystem, are increasingly released into the environment by anthropogenic activities. Water samples were collected from five areas of the Han River Watershed (HRW) tributaries, South Korea, to detect 11 VOCs, which were classified as halogenated aliphatic hydrocarbons (HAHs) and aromatic hydrocarbons (AHs). Among the 11 VOCs, 1,1-dichloroethylene, 1,1,1-trichloroethane, and vinyl chloride were undetected. The highest concentration compounds were chloroform (0.0596 ± 0.1312 µg/L), trichloroethylene (0.0253 ± 0.0781 µg/L), and toluene (0.0054 ± 0.0139 µg/L). The mean concentration (0.0234 µg/L) and detection frequency (37.0%) of HAHs were higher than those of AHs (0.0036 µg/L, 21.0%, respectively). The Imjin Hantan River area exhibited the highest mean concentration (0.2432 µg/L) and detection frequency (22.9%), because it is located near industrial complexes, thus, highlighting their role as important VOC sources. However, the detected VOCs had lower concentrations than those permitted by the EU, WHO, USA, and South Korea drinking water guidelines. Ecological risks associated with the VOCs were estimated by risk quotient (RQ); consequently, the predicted no-effect concentration was 0.0029 mg/L, and the toluene and styrene RQ values were >1 and >0.5, respectively. The findings may facilitate policymakers in designing pollution control strategies.

Our proof-of-concept study develops a suspect screening workflow to identify and prioritize potentially ubiquitous chemical exposures in matched maternal/cord blood samples, a critical period of development for future health risks. We applied liquid chromatography-quadrupole time-of-flight tandem mass spectrometry (LC-QTOF/MS) to perform suspect screening for ∼3500 industrial chemicals on pilot data from 30 paired maternal and cord serum samples (n = 60). We matched 662 suspect features in positive ionization mode and 788 in negative ionization mode (557 unique formulas overall) to compounds in our database, and selected 208 of these for fragmentation analysis based on detection frequency, correlation in feature intensity between maternal and cord samples, and peak area differences by demographic characteristics. We tentatively identified 73 suspects through fragmentation spectra matching and confirmed 17 chemical features (15 unique compounds) using analytical standards. We tentatively identified 55 compounds not previously reported in the literature, the majority which have limited to no information about their sources or uses. Examples include (i) 1-(1-acetyl-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidin-4-yl)-3-dodecylpyrrolidine-2,5-dione (known high production volume chemical) (ii) methyl perfluoroundecanoate and 2-perfluorooctyl ethanoic acid (two PFAS compounds); and (iii) Sumilizer GA 80 (plasticizer). Thus, our workflow demonstrates an approach to evaluating the chemical exposome to identify and prioritize chemical exposures during a critical period of development.

The necessity for the aquatic ecological risk assessment for benzophenone-3 (BP-3) is increasing due to its high toxic potential and high detection frequency in freshwater. The initial step in the ecological risk assessment is to determine predicted no-effect concentration (PNEC). This study derived PNEC of BP-3 in freshwater using a species sensitivity distribution (SSD) approach, whilst existing PNECs are derived using assessment factor (AF) approaches. A total of eight chronic toxicity values, obtained by toxicity testing and a literature survey, covering four taxonomic classes (fish, crustaceans, algae, and cyanobacteria) were used for PNEC derivation. Therefore, the quantity and quality of the toxicity data met the minimum requirements for PNEC derivation using an SSD approach. The PNEC derived in this study (73.3 μg/L) was far higher than the environmental concentration detected in freshwater (up to 10.4 μg/L) as well as existing PNECs (0.67~1.8 μg/L), mainly due to the difference in the PNEC derivation methodology (i.e., AF vs. SSD approach). Since the SSD approach is regarded as more reliable than the AF approach, we recommend applying the PNEC value derived in this study for the aquatic ecological risk assessment of BP-3, as the use of the existing PNEC values seems to unnecessarily overestimate the potential ecological risk of BP-3 in freshwater.

Pesticides pose a threat to the environment, but because of the substantial number of compounds, a comprehensive assessment of pesticides and an evaluation of the risk that they pose to human and aquatic life is challenging. In this study, improved analytical methods were used to quantify 221 pesticide concentrations in surface waters over the time period from 2013 to 2017. Samples were collected from 74 river sites in the conterminous US (CONUS). Potential toxicity was assessed by comparing surface water pesticide concentrations to standard concentrations that are considered to have adverse effects on human health or aquatic organisms. The majority of pesticide use is related to agriculture, and agricultural production varies across the CONUS. Therefore, our results were summarized by region (Northeast, South, Midwest, West and Pacific), with the expectation that crop production differences would drive variability in pesticide use, detection frequency, and benchmark exceedance patterns. Although agricultural pesticide use was at least 2.5 times higher in the Midwest (49 kg km-2) than in any of the other four regions (Northeast, South, West, and Pacific, 3 to 21 kg km-2) and the average number of pesticides detected in the Midwest was at least 1.5 higher (n = 25) than the other four regions (n = 8 to n = 16), the potential toxicity results were more evenly distributed. At least 50% of the sites within each of the 5 regions had at least 1 chronic benchmark exceedance. Imidacloprid posed the greatest potential threat to aquatic life with a total of 245 benchmark exceedances at 60 of the 74 sites. These results show that pesticides persist in the environment beyond the site of application and expected period of use. Continued monitoring and research are needed to improve our understanding of pesticide effects on aquatic and human life.

In this work, twelve heavy metals and arsenic, As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, Mn, Ni, Pb, Se, and Zn, in a rice sample collected from some areas of Vietnam have been quantified and implemented by using multiple analytical platforms such as ICP-MS, AAS, and mercury analyser. Seventy rice samples collected from the Red River Delta and mining zone activity were analysed. Concentration of heavy metals and arsenic in rice was analysed after appropriated sample digestion using internal or external calibration curves. The mean concentration (mg kg−1 dried weight) of the analysed elements in rice samples decreased on the order of Mn (19.268) > Fe (13.624) > Zn (8.163) > Cu (3.138) > Ni (0.384) > Cr (0.296) > Co (0.279) > As (0.115) > Cd (0.111) > Pb (0.075) > Hg (0.007) > Se (

In recent years, several changes have been made to the composition of various products which are used indoors. Plenty of new chemical additives have been incorporated to materials to comply with current legislation and safety rules. Consequently, the emission profiles of contaminants detected indoors may change over time, requiring continuous monitoring. In this study, dust samples were collected from 25 homes located in the Flemish region of Belgium during different seasons (winter and summer). Our aim was the development of a suspect screening workflow for the identification of new chemicals which might have been applied to indoor goods, released into the indoor environment, and accumulated in dust. An in-house suspect list was curated including selected groups of compounds, namely “phthalates”, “phosphates”, “terephthalates”, “citrates”, “trimellitates”, (di-, tri-, tetra-) “carboxylic acids”, “adipates”, “azelates”, “sebacates”, (di-)“benzoates”, and “succinates”. 63 chemicals were prioritized based on their level of identification and detection frequency in samples. Seasonal comparison was tested, indicating that higher temperatures of summer might facilitate the release of few chemicals from the products into the indoor environment. Seven chemicals, to the best of our knowledge not previously reported, were selected out of the 63 listed and identified for structure confirmation using high-resolution mass spectrometry. Tributyl trimellitate (TBTM), bis (3,5,5-trimethylhexyl) phosphate (Bis-3,5,5-TMHPh), iso-octyl 2-phenoxy ethyl terephthalate (IOPhET), dimethyl azelate (DMA), dimethyl sebacate (DMS), dipropylene glycol dibenzoate (DiPGDB) and 3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxybenzaldehyde (BHT-CHO) were detected at frequencies ranging from 8 to 52% in winter and 4–56% in summer dust.

Twenty-eight samples of surface seawater were collected from the West Pacific Ocean during 2019 using a high-volume solid-phase extraction with high-throughput organic analysis (Hi-throat/Hi-volume SPE) method, and concentrations of 10 organophosphate ester flame retardants and plasticizers (OPEs) were determined. The total OPE concentration in the samples was 3.02–48.4 ng L−1 (mean 25.0 ± 10.5 ng L−1), with tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP) being the largest contributor. Cluster analysis results showed off-shore input from the coast of East and Southeast Asia was an important source of these chemicals. Tri-p-tolyl phosphate (TpTP) should also be considered for long-term monitoring, because of its high detection frequency. In April 2016, a series of earthquakes (M 7.3 on the Japan Meteorological Agency scale) occurred in Kumamoto, Japan causing serious damage to underground sewerage networks. In this study, we evaluated sewer exfiltration in groundwater in the Kumamoto area after the earthquakes by using multiple tracers. We used 14 pharmaceuticals, including carbamazepine and crotamiton, and anthropogenic Gd as tracers, and we measured concentrations of these tracers from September 2016 to November 2017 seasonally. The detection frequency of caffeine, carbamazepine, crotamiton, ibuprofen, and anthropogenic Gd ranged from 29% to 45%, and the concentrations of the pharmaceuticals in the groundwater were lower than those in previous studies. The median of all pharmaceutical concentrations did not decrease, whereas the median of the sum of crotamiton and carbamazepine concentrations, which are quantitative sewage markers, decreased with time. The sewer exfiltration rates in September 2016 estimated using carbamazepine, crotamiton, and anthropogenic Gd were 0.59 ± 0.27%, 0.66 ± 0.47%, and 0.11 ± 0.18% of sewage dry weather flow, respectively, indicating that the effect of the earthquakes on sewer exfiltration was small, probably because the damaged sewers were quickly repaired. This study demonstrated that a multiple-tracer approach is useful for evaluating sewer exfiltration after major earthquakes.

Herbicide 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) and its analogues are widely used in agriculture. Although the occurrence of 2,4-D in urine has been widely reported in North America, it has scarcely been investigated in China, especially in young children. In addition, both in vivo and in vitro studies have shown that high-level 2,4-D exposure is associated with oxidative stress, but their association in a general sensitive population has rarely been evaluated. In this study, 2,4-D and its analogues were measured in 417 urine samples collected from 139 children aged 0–7 during the non-peak season of pesticide application in Wuhan, central China, and Shenzhen, south China. Each of them provided three samples in three consecutive days. An oxidative stress biomarker, 8-hydroxy-2-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG), was also measured. The geometric mean (GM) of unconjugated urinary 2,4-D concentration was 0.10 μg/L (corrected by urinary specific gravity, SG-corrected). After β-glucuronidase hydrolysis, the GM of SG-corrected urinary 2,4-D was 0.15 μg/L, and the detection frequency was 100%. Moderate inter-day reproducibility was found within individuals, with an intraclass correlation coefficient of 0.68 for SG-corrected urinary deconjugated 2,4-D. The GM of estimated daily intake of 2,4-D was 6.05 ng/kg-bw/day. A significant positive correlation was found between urinary 2,4-D and 8-OHdG, whereas no association was found after SG-correction. This is the first study to characterize the occurrence of urinary 2,4-D, its inter-day reliability, and its association with urinary 8-OHdG in young children from China.

Antibiotics have raised significant concern as emerging pollutants for their increasing consumption, persistent input, and potential threat to ecological environment. Due to low concentrations and various types in coastal water, simultaneous quantification of all kinds of antibiotics is time-consuming and costly. In order to make antibiotic regular monitoring in coastal water possible, identifying the priority antibiotics in the environment is essential. Here, a method for screening the priority antibiotics in coastal water was proposed, considering individual antibiotic concentration, the positive correlation between individual and total antibiotic concentration, the detection frequency, and obvious ecological risk. Taking coastal water of the East China Sea as an example, on a list of 77 target antibiotics, 7 (SMX, TMP, SCP, SMP, CNX, ATM, and ETM) and 4 (SMX, SCP, SMP, and CNX) antibiotics were selected to be the priority antibiotics in 2017 and 2018, respectively. Furthermore, the 4 priority antibiotics in 2018 were all involved in the 7 priority antibiotics in 2017. The sum of the priority antibiotic concentrations accounted for 0.8% and 23.2% of total antibiotic concentrations, and the sum of their RQ accounted for 69.2% and 66.8% of total RQ values in 2017 and 2018, respectively. Among the above 7 priority antibiotics, ATM is mainly used in human clinical, SMX, SCP, and SMP are mainly consumed in veterinary medicine, TMP, CNX, and ETM are commonly used for humans and animals. The proposed method might provide an important reference for the monitoring and management of antibiotic pollution in coastal water.

Although the production of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) has been phased out over the past decade worldwide, they are still potentially hazardous to the environment due to their persistence and toxicity. This study investigated the levels of 55 PBDEs in water and sediments from the Danjiangkou Reservoir, China. The levels of PBDEs were in the range of not detected (ND)–286.67 ng/L in water and ND–236.04 ng/g in sediments. BDE209 was the predominant PBDE congener and constituted 15–50% and 44–68% of the total PBDEs in water and sediments, respectively. Commercial pentaBDE products (70-5DE, DE-71) were the dominant source of tetraBDE, pentaBDE, and hexaBDE, while commercial octaBDE (79-8DE) and decaBDE (102E and 82-0DE) products were the main sources of nonaBDE and decaBDE in water. PBDEs in sediments mainly stemmed from commercial decaBDE products and combustion sources. BDE-209 posed high ecological risks to aquatic organisms and dominated the total ecological risks of PBDEs. No cancer risks and non-cancer risks were observed for PBDEs. A ranking method based on four criteria, i.e., detection frequency, concentration, ecological risk, and health risks, was proposed, and 17 PBDEs were identified as high priority PBDEs for future monitoring and management in the Danjiangkou Reservoir.

The extensive development and use of new anthropogenic chemicals have inevitably led to their presence in aquatic environments. Surface waters affected by sewage effluents have been exposed to these new substances. In the present study, the occurrence of anthropogenic substances, including pharmaceuticals and industrial chemicals, was investigated in one of the major rivers in Korea, the Nakdong River. Furthermore, seasonal variations in their content were determined via annual monitoring. Through the suspect and non-target screening (SNTS) technique, 58 substances were newly identified in the river and integrated in the quantitative monitoring practice. The results revealed that niflumic acid and melamine exhibited the highest median concentrations, i.e., 320 ng/L and 11,000 ng/L, respectively. The results associated with seasonal change revealed that the concentration of a considerable number of substances increased in winter when the flow rate was low. Conversely, some substances exhibited high concentrations in summer (e.g., polyethylene glycol) and spring (e.g., niflumic acid). This was attributed to the seasonal changes in the consumption, prescriptions, or the application of alternative substances. These changes were also reflected by the risk quotient (RQ) values calculated from the concentration and toxicity values. Pharmaceuticals such as telmisartan and carbamazepine and industrial chemicals such as organophosphorus flame retardants (OPFRs) and melamine accounted for approximately 90% of the total RQ. Major substances prioritized using the production of the RQ value and the detection frequency included OPFRs and telmisartan. It is recommended that these results be reflected in future water quality monitoring plans.

No known data are available regarding the occurrence of fipronil (FP) in indoor dust in China, despite the fact that it is an emerging insecticide that is used extensively. In this study, FP and its derivatives (FPs), including fipronil sulfone (FP-SFO), fipronil sulfide, fipronil desulfinyl, and fipronil amide, were determined in indoor dust samples (n = 436) collected from three different cities in China between 2016 and 2019, namely Shenzhen (February and September 2019), Wuhan (October 2016, October 2018, and August 2019), and Taiyuan (October 2016), located in south, central, and north China, respectively. FP and FP-SFO were the major target analytes detected in all dust samples, accounting for approximately 68.6–90.1% of the cumulative concentration of FPs (ΣFPs). The ΣFPs values for the dust samples ranged from not detected (ND) to 33.6 μg/g (median ± median absolute deviation [MAD]: 7.12 ± 6.44 ng/g), with a detection frequency of 95.6%. The median value of the ΣFPs of the dust samples collected from Shenzhen (22.6 ± 15.6 ng/g) was higher than that found in the dust samples collected in Taiyuan 2016 (1.87 ± 1.65 ng/g) and Wuhan (6.43 ± 5.62 ng/g). Significantly higher ΣFPs were observed in the dust samples collected in urban areas than in the rural areas of Taiyuan and Wuhan. Furthermore, an increasing trend of FP (from 2016 to 2018) in the rural areas of Wuhan, and a seasonal variation (summer > autumn) in FP, FP-SFO, and ΣFPs in the dust samples from urban areas of Wuhan were observed. The estimated daily intake of FPs via dust ingestion for people in Shenzhen was approximately 12 times higher than in Taiyuan based on the samples analyzed. This is the first study to describe the occurrence and spatiotemporal variations of FPs in indoor dust in China.

The present study focuses on the determination of the occurrence and levels of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in the drinking and source water from the Philippines and Thailand. A total of 46 samples (18 commercial bottled waters, 5 drinking water from vending machine (re-fill stations) and 23 source water) were analyzed using liquid chromatography with tandem high-resolution mass spectrometry. Using the targeted method, 12 different PFASs were detected in the drinking water samples with total quantifiable PFASs (∑PFASs) levels ranging from 7.16 to 59.49 ng/L; 15 PFASs were detected in source water with ∑PFASs ranging from 15.55 to 65.65 ng/L. A 100% detection frequency was observed for perfluoroheptanoic acid (PFHpA), perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA), and perfluorosulfonic acid (PFOS) in all water samples. Six other PFASs, not included in the targeted analysis, were detected using the suspect screening approach. For the first time, the presence of 2-(N-methylperfluorooctanesulfonamido) acetic acid (N-MeFOSAA) in drinking water is reported, and 3 novel PFASs (C5H5OF8, C6H4O2F6, and C9H2O2F16) were detected using suspect screening in source water. Combined results from target and suspect screening analysis showed that PFASs detected were predominantly (52%) short-chain (with fluorinated alkyl chain of ≤6) which could be explained by their high mobility in the environment. The detected PFASs levels in drinking water will not likely pose immediate health risk to consumers according to US EPA health advisory for PFOS and PFOA of 70 ng/L, but inclusion of bottled and drinking water from re-fill stations in monitoring programs is warranted.

In this study, concentrations of disinfection byproducts (DBPs) and COVID-19 related pharmaceuticals in wastewater effluents and surface water were measured two weeks, three months and eight months after the lockdown in Wuhan. Little temporal variation in DBP concentrations suggested intensified disinfection during the COVID-19 pandemic had limited impacts on the occurrence of DBPs in the aquatic environment. In contrast, the pandemic led to a significant increase in concentrations of lopinavir and ritonavir in wastewater effluents and surface water. The high detection frequency of these pharmaceuticals in surface water after the lockdown highlighted their mobility and persistence in the aquatic environment. The initial ecological risk assessment indicated moderate risks associated with these pharmaceuticals in surface water. As the global situation is still rapidly evolving with a continuous surge in the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases, our results suggest a pressing need for monitoring COVID-19 related pharmaceuticals as well as a systematic evaluation of their ecotoxicities in the aquatic environment., Graphical abstract Unlabelled Image

The purpose of this study was to determine perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in human serum, urine, hair and nail from general populations, and to investigate the possibility for human urine, hair and nail used as the biomonitoring sample for PFASs exposure. We detected the concentrations of PFHxA, PFOA, PFNA, PFDA, PFUnDA, PFDoA, PFHxS and PFOS in 39 matched human serum, urine, hair and nail samples from Shenzhen in China. The detection frequency and the median level of PFOS were all higher than that of the other PFASs in four matrices. The median concentration of PFOS in serum, urine, hair, and nail were 9.24ng/mL, 13.96ng/L, 0.58ng/g and 0.63ng/g, respectively. The results of spearman correlation test indicated that nail was an ideal matrix for biomonitoring PFOS rather than human urine and hair in general populations for the non-invasive sampling.

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and selected novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs) were examined in road dust samples collected from three representative areas in northern Vietnam, including seven inner districts of Hanoi metropolitan area, an industrial park in Thai Nguyen province and a rural commune in Bac Giang province. This study aims to provide basic information on the contamination status, potential sources and human exposure to PBDEs and NBFRs associated with road dust in northern Vietnam. PBDEs were detected in all the samples at a range of 0.91–56 ng g−1 with a median value of 16 ng g−1. PBDE concentrations in road dusts from urban sites were significantly higher than those from industrial zone and rural area, suggesting their environmental load related to urbanization in northern Vietnam. BDE-209, major component of deca-BDE technical mixtures, dominated the congener patterns in all samples, accounting for 60.8–91.9% of total PBDE levels. Decabromodiphenyl ethane, an alternative of deca-BDE, was observed in a detection frequency of 100% in urban and industrial areas and at levels comparable to those of BDE-209. Other NBFRs such as pentabromoethylbenzene, hexabromobiphenyl and 1,2-bis-(2,4,6-tribromophenoxy)ethane, were found at trace levels. Daily intake doses of PBDEs via road dust ingestion from 2.3 × 10−5 to 0.11 ng kg-bw−1 d−1 were estimated for residents in study areas, indicating a negligible risk with hazard indexes of 10−9 to 10−5 for selected congeners such as BDE-47, 99, 153 and 209.

To support the global monitoring plan on persistent organic pollutants (GMP) under the Stockholm Convention, 41 countries have exposed passive air samplers equipped with polyurethane foam disks (PUFs) to monitor perfluoroalkane substances (PFAS). The recommended procedure had PUFs exposed for three months during two years; analysis was performed in one expert laboratory to generate harmonized results. Chemical analysis using Soxhlet extraction with methanol or a 60:40 MTBE:methanol mixture, solid-phase extraction and UPLC/MSMS detection posed challenges as to matrix interference and sensitivity. Single PUFs as quarterly samples and combination of up to 4 PUFs as annual samples were analyzed; all concentrations were normalized to one PUF and 3 months exposure. Exceptionally high values (up to 36 000 pg SPFOS/PUF) were observed in nine samples from Zambia where a local source was identified. For the remaining 308 PUFs, PFOA had a higher median value (188 pg/PUF) than SPFOS (125 pg/PUF) whereas the mean value of SPFOS (254 pg/PUF) was slightly higher than the mean value for PFOA (230 pg/PUF). PFHxS concentrations were much lower in concentration and detection frequency and FOSA, as the only relevant PFOS precursor compound, showed a median value of zero. No clear regional differentiation was found.

The mass load of pharmaceuticals in the municipal wastewater based on wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) is a good indication of population consumption in the catchment. After successful application of illicit drugs’ estimation, this method holds the potential to measure the geographical and temporal consumption of prescription medicines. In this study, we investigated the occurrence of four non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), acetaminophen (ACM), diclofenac (DCF), ibuprofen (IBU) and naproxen (NPX), in two wastewater treatment plants in Guangzhou City, China and compared the spatial and temporal consumption variation of them. Over a period of 28 days’ sampling, the detection frequency of ACM, DCF, IBU, and NPX in the influent of two wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in Guangzhou City were 91%, 66%, 100%, and 95%, and their concentrations were up to 128, 131, 372, and 324 ng/L, respectively. No significant inter-catchment difference was observed regarding the per capita mass load in the two WWTPs investigated. A literature review which covered 160 WWTPs in 18 countries was conducted to compare the population normalized mass load of four commonly used NSAIDs. ACM had the highest population normalized mass loads (29–17,430 mg/d/1000 inhabitants) and DCF had the lowest population normalized mass load (6.5–628 mg/d/1000 inhabitants) in the catchments located in 18 countries. The mass loads of selected NSAIDs in China were lower than those in European and North American. ACM and IBU consumptions were at least 2 times higher in winter than that in summer, in contrast, DCF and NPX consumptions had no significant seasonal variation.

As alternatives to traditional brominated flame retardants, organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs), especially for organophosphate esters (OPEs) -- the most widely used and investigated OPFRs, have raised people's concern on their environmental and health-related risks over the years. Considering their extensive environmental occurrence and potential adverse effects, precise estimation on the human body burden of OPEs will be conducive to the restrictions on the usage of these compounds scientifically. Biomonitoring research can provide precise information on human exposure to OPEs as it reveals the degree of external exposure from all exposure routes. Knowledge on biotransformation and metabolism of OPEs in the biosystems is of great significance for our understanding of the internal exposure to these compounds. In this study, the biological metabolic processes of nine OPEs prevalent in the environment, involving tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP), tris(1-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TCIPP), tris(1,3-dichloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TDCIPP), tripropyl phosphate (TPrP), tri-n-butyl phosphate (TnBP), tris(2-butoxyethyl) phosphate (TBOEP), triphenyl phosphate (TPhP), 2-ethylhexyl diphenyl phosphate (EHDPP), and tricresyl phosphate (TCrP), are comprehensively reviewed. Specifically, the metabolic pathway, kinetics and mechanism of OPEs are depicted in detail. Under this context, the advances and limitations on biomonitoring of OPE metabolites in human urine are summarized. The requirements of specificity, quantitative stability, high detection frequency/concentration are needed for OPE metabolites to be considered and validated as biomarkers. Thus far, deeper elucidations on the metabolic processes and identification of biomarkers of OPEs are urgently required, given that some OPEs have no suitable biomarkers in human biomonitoring. For better assessment of the body burden of OPEs in humans, reliable and effective methodologies for urine sampling and estimation on internal exposure to OPEs need to be further developed in the future.

It is thought that there are many unregulated anthropogenic chemicals in the environment. For risk assessment of chemicals, it is essential to estimate the predicted environmental concentrations. As an effort of identifying residual organic contaminants in air and water in Korea, nontarget screening using two-dimensional gas chromatography time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC×GC-TOFMS) was conducted at 10 sites using polyurethane foam passive air sampler and at 6 sites using polydimethyl siloxane (PDMS) passive water sampler in three different seasons in 2014. More than 600 chemical peaks were identified satisfying the identification criteria in air and water samples, respectively, providing a list for further investigation. Chemical substances with reported national emission rates in 2014 (n=149) were also screened for potential existence in the environment using a level II fugacity model. Most of chemical substances classified as not detectable were not identified with detection frequency greater than 20% by nontarget screening, indicating that a simple equilibrium model has a strong potential to be used to exclude chemicals that are not likely to remain in the environment after emissions from targeted monitoring.

This study measured concentrations of fifteen phthalates in dust from homes (n = 19), offices (n = 10), kindergartens (n = 5) and public places (n = 7) in Beijing, China, during April 2010 and May 2011. We examined phthalate co-occurrence in dust collected from different indoor surfaces and estimated daily exposure to phthalates via dust ingestion, inhalation, and dermal absorption. Diisobutyl phthalate (DiBP), di-n-butyl phthalate (DnBP) and di (2-Ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) were the most abundant phthalates in each of the investigated environments (medians: 58.1–272 μg/g, 31.2–145 μg/g, and 202–1310 μg/g, respectively), with detection frequencies greater than 90% except for DiBP in dust from homes. In order to clarify the actual situation of indoor pollution to polished rice with organophosphorus flame retardants (PFRs) which are ubiquitous in the indoor environment, the pollution of PFRs to polished rice stored in a house for a week was investigated. The survey covered 64 ordinary families in the Osaka region. We analyzed six typical PFRs in 37 rice samples in 2015, and ten typical PFRs in 27 rice samples in 2016. Polished rice was homogenized with acetone-hexane and defatted by hexane-acetonitrile partition. Quantitative analysis for PFRs was performed by GC-FPD. The detection frequency of PFRs in the rice samples was 35/37 in 2015 and 27/27 in 2016. The highest values were 160 ng/g for TCEP, 500 ng/g for TCIPP and 430 ng/g for TBEP. The concentration ratio of each detected PFR in the polished rice samples was different in each house. In the analysis of 16 polished rice samples which were stored in the home, PFRs were detected in ten samples regardless of the storage methods. PFRs were detected from 12 out of 16 commercial brown rice samples. This result suggested that they were polluted during distribution and storage process of them.

Typical halogenated persistent organic pollutants (Hal-POPs), including polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT), are a group of ubiquitous organic pollutants with an endocrine disrupting effect. This study evaluated the accumulation and congener profiles of Hal-POPs in the bodies of men who live/work in areas of South China where electronic wastes are collected and managed, especially in their semen samples. The results show that the detection frequency and serum concentrations of Hal-POP congeners within the high-exposure group (HEG) were higher than those of the low-exposure group (LEG). Furthermore, an identical trend was observed for the seminal plasma concentrations of Hal-POPs. The distribution characteristics, such as their mean, median, and discrete values, of PBDE congeners in serum and semen samples from the same subjects were consistent with each other. However, the distribution characteristics of PCB congeners in serum samples were different from those in semen samples. BDE153 was one of the most abundant congeners found in the serum and semen samples; hence, it can be identified as an indicator PBDE congener. As the rapid development of aquaculture in the Beibu Gulf, large number of antibiotics was released into marine aquatic environment. But little integrated studies concerned on the occurrence and correlation of antibiotics with their corresponding ARGs in this region. We investigated the abundance of three prevalent categories of antibiotics and corresponding antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), analyzed the potential correlation among antibiotics, ARGs and sediment properties in eight terminal rivers, nine semi-closed sites and eight nearshore areas from Beibu Gulf. Residual concentrations of total antibiotics ranged from 51.04 to 137.64 μg/kg, TETs had higher concentrations than FQs and SAs. BackgroundWomen firefighters are exposed to recognized and probable carcinogens, yet there are few studies of chemical exposures and associated health concerns, such as breast cancer. Biomonitoring often requires a priori selection of compounds to be measured, and so may not detect important, lesser known, exposures.ObjectivesThe Women Firefighters Biomonitoring Collaborative (WFBC) created a biological sample archive and conducted a general suspect screen (GSS) to address this data gap.MethodsUsing liquid chromatography-quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (LC-QTOF/MS) we sought to identify candidate chemicals of interest in serum samples from 83 women firefighters (FF) and 79 office workers (OW) in San Francisco. Through the GSS approach we identified chemical peaks by matching accurate mass from serum samples against a custom chemical database of 740 slightly polar phenolic and acidic compounds, including many of relevance to firefighting or breast cancer etiology. We then selected chemicals for confirmation based on a priori criteria: 1) detection frequency or peak area differences between OW and FF; 2) evidence of mammary carcinogenicity, estrogenicity, or genotoxicity; and 3) not currently measured in large biomonitoring studies.ResultsWe detected 620 chemicals that matched 300 molecular formulas in the WFBC database, including phthalate metabolites, phosphate flame retardant metabolites, phenols, pesticides, nitro-and nitroso-compounds, and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances. The average number of chemicals from the database that were detected in participants was 72 and 70 in FF and OW, respectively. We confirmed 8 of the 20 prioritized suspect chemicals –including two alkylphenols, ethyl paraben, BPF, PFOSAA, benzophenone-3, benzyl p-hydroxybenzoate, and triphenyl phosphate--by running a matrix spike of the reference standards and using m/z, retention time and the confirmation of at least two fragment ions as criteria for matching.ConclusionGSS provides a powerful high-throughput approach to identify and prioritize novel chemicals for biomonitoring and health studies.

Due to the potential ecological and human health risks, pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) are considered as contaminants of emerging concern. PPCPs can be discharged to the aquatic environment from various sources, including municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), animal feeding operations, hospitals, and pharmaceutical manufacturers. A major challenge to regional characterization of ecological and human health risks is identification of the environmental emissions of PPCPs. This study established a facile approach for calculation of PPCP emission factors from raw wastewater and wastewater effluent. Using reported concentrations from WWTPs, nine PPCPs, namely carbamazepine, ciprofloxacin, erythromycin, ibuprofen, ketoprofen, ofloxacin, sulfadiazine, sulfamethoxazole, and trimethoprim, were identified as priority contaminants based on environmental significance (i.e., high detection frequency and potential ecological risk) and data availability. Emission factors were calculated for the nine PPCPs in raw wastewater, secondary effluent, and tertiary effluent for low, medium and high emission scenarios according to the concentration distributions of these nine PPCPs. The emission factors were used to estimate the mass of the PPCPs discharged from the nine provinces and two municipalities of the Yangtze River valley. The total mass of the nine PPCPs emitted into the watershed was estimated as 3867 kg, 8808 kg and 21,464 kg for low, medium and high emission scenarios respectively in 2018. Although uncertainty is inevitable in the emission factors, the reported approach provides a viable alternative to top-down and multimedia fugacity estimation strategies that require an abundance of sewershed-, WWTP-, and compound-specific information that is difficult to collect in developing countries.

The presence of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) in wastewater samples has been documented in several countries. Wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) is potentially effective for early warning of a COVID-19 outbreak. In this study, presence of SARS-CoV-2 RNA in wastewater samples was investigated and was compared with the number of the confirmed COVID-19 cases in the study area during COVID-19 outbreak in Japan. In total, 45 influent wastewater samples were collected from five wastewater treatment plants in Ishikawa and Toyama prefectures in Japan. During the study period, the numbers of confirmed COVID-19 cases in these prefectures increased from 0.3 and 0 to >20 per 100,000 people. SARS-CoV-2 ribonucleic acid (RNA) in the samples was detected using several PCR-based assays. Of the 45 samples, 21 were positive for SARS-CoV-2 according to at least one of the three quantitative RT-PCR assays. The detection frequency increased when the number of total confirmed SARS-CoV-2 cases in 100,000 people exceeded 10 in each prefecture; however, SARS-CoV-2 could also be detected at a low frequency even when the number was below 1.0. SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater could be detected in the early stage of the epidemic, even if the number of confirmed cases potentially underestimates the actual numbers of cases. An environmental survey was conducted in order to assess the frequency of detection of picobirnavirus (PBV), human adenovirus (HAdV) and infective enterovirus (iEV) as indicators of faecal contamination in freshwater, and to determine their potential as reporters of the presence of other enteric viruses, such as group A rotavirus (RVA). The study was carried out over a three-year period (2013-2015) in the San Roque Dam, Córdoba, Argentina. The overall frequency detection was 62.9% for PBV, 64.2% for HAdV and 70.4% for iEV. No significant differences were observed in the rates of detection for any of these viruses through the years studied, and a seasonal pattern was not present. Whenever there was RVA detection in the samples analyzed, there was also detection of iEV and/or HAdV and/or PBV. At least one of the viral groups analyzed was demonstrated in the 100% of the samples with faecal coliforms values within the guideline limits. In this setting, especially in those samples which reveal faecal indicator bacteria within the guideline limit, we propose to carry out a pathway, involving PBV, HAdV and iEV detection in order to enhance the evaluation of microbiological quality in freshwater in Argentina. The proposed methodological strategy could report faecal contamination in water, mainly of human origin, and the condition of the matrix to maintain viral viability. In addition, the viral groups selected could report the presence of RV.

The presence of anthropogenic contaminants such as antimicrobials, flame-retardants, and plasticizers in runoff from agricultural fields applied with municipal biosolids may pose a potential threat to the environment. This study assesses the potential for rainfall-induced runoff of 69 anthropogenic waste indicators (AWIs), widely found in household and industrial products, from biosolids amended field plots. The agricultural field containing the test plots was treated with biosolids for the first time immediately prior to this study. AWIs present in soil and biosolids were isolated by continuous liquid-liquid extraction and analyzed by full-scan gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. Results for 18 AWIs were not evaluated due to their presence in field blank QC samples, and another 34 did not have sufficient detection frequency in samples to analyze trends in data. A total of 17 AWIs, including 4-nonylphenol, triclosan, and tris(2-butoxyethyl)phosphate, were present in runoff with acceptable data quality and frequency for subsequent interpretation. Runoff samples were collected 5 days prior to and 1, 9, and 35 days after biosolids application. Of the 17 AWIs considered, 14 were not detected in pre-application samples, or their concentrations were much smaller than in the sample collected one day after application. A range of trends was observed for individual AWI concentrations (typically from 0.1 to 10 μg/L) over the course of the study, depending on the combination of partitioning and degradation mechanisms affecting each compound most strongly. Overall, these results indicate that rainfall can mobilize anthropogenic contaminants from biosolids-amended agricultural fields, directly to surface waters and redistribute them to terrestrial sites away from the point of application via runoff. For 14 of 17 compounds examined, the potential for runoff remobilization during rainstorms persists even after three 100-year rainstorm-equivalent simulations and the passage of a month.

In southeast New Hampshire, where reformulated gasoline was used from the 1990s to 2007, methyl tert-butyl ether (MtBE) concentrations ≥0.2 μg/L were found in water from 26.7% of 195 domestic wells sampled in 2005. Ten years later in 2015, and eight years after MtBE was banned, 10.3% continue to have MtBE. Most wells (140 of 195) had no MtBE detections (concentrations0.2 μg/L) in 2005 and 2015. Of the remaining wells, MtBE concentrations increased in 4 wells, decreased in 47 wells, and did not change in 4 wells. On average, MtBE concentrations decreased 65% among 47 wells whereas MtBE concentrations increased 17% among 4 wells between 2005 and 2015. The percent change in detection frequency from 2005 to 2015 (the decontamination rate) was lowest (45.5%) in high-population-density areas and in wells completed in the Berwick Formation geologic units. The decontamination rate was the highest (78.6%) where population densities were low and wells were completed in bedrock composed of granite, metamorphic, and mafic rocks. Wells in the Berwick Formation are characteristically deeper and have lower yields than wells in other rock types and have shallower overburden cover, which may allow for more rapid transport of MtBE from land-surface releases. Low-yielding, deep bedrock wells may require large contributing areas to achieve adequate well yield, and thus have a greater chance of intercepting MtBE, in addition to diluting contaminants at a slower rate and thus requiring more time to decontaminate.

Perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) are linked to adverse effect on human healths, therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the levels of PFCs in prepared food. One hundred and fifty-one samples of six prepared food groups were purchased from retail food establishments in Korea. Twelve PFCs were detected in the sample, the accuracy ranged between 80.8-119.4% and precision ranged between 2.2-2.89% high and low concentrations in PFCs spiked samples. The detection frequency of perfluoro-pentanoic acid (PFPeA) was and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) above the limit of detection, which was 84.1 and 82.8%, respectively, but positive detection frequency of perfluorooctanesulphonic acid (PFOS) was as shown as low as 29.1%. Residual PFOA levels in most of the samples were higher than the PFOS levels. The average concentration of total PFCs in the samples was 1.68±1.79 ng/g, and PFPeA and PFOA were the predominant PFCs.

This study aims to investigate the level of priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and identification of their potential sources in residential soils. During the study, a total 36 soil samples collected from twelve residential locations at Sahibabad-Ghaziabad area of western Uttar Pradesh, India, a constituted part of the National Capital Region of India. Samples extracted using ultrasonication, cleaned with silica and analyzed by diode array detector–high-performance liquid chromatography using acetonitrile/water as mobile phase. The 25th and 75th percentile concentration of ∑PAHs was 264 μg kg−1 and 584 μg kg−1, respectively, with mean and median of 445 μg kg−1 and 421 μg kg−1. The detection frequency of PAHs in all samples was lower for low molecular weight PAHs (19%) than high molecular weight PAHs (81%). The concentration of seven probable carcinogenic PAHs accounted for 67% of the ∑PAHs. PAHs toxicity potential as benzo(a)pyrene toxicity equivalent ranged between 2.52–253 μg BaPTEQ kg−1. Composition profile of PAHs with different aromatic rings and selected diagnostic molecular ratios suggested the local pyrogenic sources of PAHs from vehicular emissions, diesel engines, biomass combustion, gasoline, and coal combustions.

No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2016-08-01 In this study, the simultaneous presence of eight polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), nine new brominated flame retardants (NBFRs) and ten organophosphorus flame retardants (OPFRs) was investigated in dust samples collected from different indoor environments (homes, schools, theatres, a university and a Research Institute) in Barcelona, Spain. OPFRs were detected at the highest concentrations followed by PBDEs. ∑OPFRs ranged from 2053 to 72,090 ng g-1 and tris(2-chloroisopropyl) phosphate (TCIPP) was the most abundant compound. BDE-209 was the main PBDE congener detected (up to 14,990 ng g-1), while other PBDEs ranged from 2.6 to 118 ng g-1. Among the studied NBFRs, decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE - up to 4432 ng g-1) followed by bis(2-ethylhexyl) tetrabromophthalate (BEH-TEBP - up to 508 ng g-1) were detected at the highest concentration, whereas a lower detection frequency was observed for 2-ethylhexyl 2,3,4,5-tetrabromobenzoate (EH-TBB), 1,2-bis(2,4,6-tribromophenoxy)ethane (BTBPE), pentabromotoluene (PBT) and hexabromobenzene (HBB). The levels and profile of flame retardants (FRs) were characteristic of each environment, where theatres followed by homes presented the highest concentrations and schools had the lowest levels. Principal Component Analysis permitted to identify the main sources and distribution of all FRs, according to specific uses in each environment. The simultaneous presence of all FR families in indoor dust points to the need to monitor these compounds to minimize human exposure. On April 14th and 16th, 2016, two large-scale earthquakes (Mw 6.2 and 7.0) occurred in Kumamoto, Japan. The sewer system was seriously damaged and there were concerns about groundwater pollution by sewer exfiltration. In this study, artificial sweeteners including acesulfame (ACE) in groundwater were analyzed before and after the earthquakes to evaluate sewage pollution and its temporal variation. Before the earthquakes, ACE was detected in 31 of 49 groundwater samples analyzed, indicating that wastewater may have leaked into groundwater. Groundwater was sampled from the same locations 2, 7, 12, and 30 months after the earthquakes. The detection frequency and median concentration of ACE in groundwater increased significantly 7 months after the earthquakes, from several tens to maximumly 189 times greater than the pre-earthquake concentrations. This suggests the earthquakes caused serious damage to sewer pipes and groundwater may be polluted. However, ACE concentrations drastically decreased or remained low 30 months after the earthquakes, probably due to the recovery and restoration work of sewer infrastructure. This study shows that ACE is an excellent tracer for evaluating sewer exfiltration to groundwater. In addition, it is important to obtain data on sewage tracers under normal condition as part of preparations for large-scale earthquakes.

There is increasing concern in the scientific community regarding emerging contaminants in aquatic matrices because of the potential effects of these contaminants on aquatic biota. In recent decades, the Itaipu–Piratininga lagoon system has suffered a series of environmental impacts, among which water pollution stands out. In this context, the aim of this study was to analyse the occurrence of pharmaceuticals and endocrine disrupters in water (dissolved and particulate phases) and in surface sediments, and their potential oestrogenic effects. Contaminant concentrations were determined by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry, whereas oestrogenic activity was evaluated using the yeast oestrogen screen assay. Of the 12 compounds analysed, concentrations of gemfibrozil, acetaminophen and diclofenac were below the limit of detection. The compounds with the highest detection frequency in the water were bisphenol A>4-octylphenol>naproxen>oestradiol, whereas in the sediment were bisphenol A>naproxen>oestradiol. Higher pharmaceutical concentrations and numbers of microcontaminants were observed in August 2017 (winter), which can be explained by the lower dilution and degradation capacity of these compounds during winter. Oestrogenic activity was observed in at least one of the three matrices (i.e. water (dissolved and particulate phases) and surface sediments) at all sampling stations and in both sampling campaigns (January and August 2017). Combined with data in the literature data, the results of this study indicate probable adverse effects of contaminants on aquatic organisms of this lagoon system.

Despite frequent detection of atrazine (ATZ) and its degradates (including hydroxyatrazine, ATZ-OH; deethylatrazine, DEA; deisopropylatrazine, DIA; and deethyldeisopropylatrazine, DACT) in a variety of water bodies, documentation of their occurrence and distribution in tap water in China is still scarce. A nationwide survey about ATZ and its degradates (ATZs) in tap water from 31 provinces in 7 regions of mainland China and Hong Kong was conducted during June 2019. At least one of the analytes was found in all the water samples (n = 884). The median sum concentrations of ATZs (ΣATZs) was 21.0 ng/L (range: 0.02 ng/L-3.04 μg/L). The predominant compounds of ATZs in tap water were ATZ and DEA, with a detection frequency of 99.5% and 98.0%, respectively, followed by ATZ-OH (87.3%), DACT (84.0%), and DIA (78.1%). Significant regional variations (p 0.05) were found in the concentrations of ATZs in tap water, and the highest concentration of ΣATZs (median: 254 ng/L, range: 0.44 ng/L-3.04 μg/L) was found in Northeastern China, followed by Eastern (37.2 ng/L, 0.02-706 ng/L), Northern (30.2 ng/L, 0.04-317 ng/L), Central (29.3 ng/L, 0.04-256 ng/L), Southern (25.0 ng/L, 0.04-297 ng/L), Southwestern (17.2 ng/L, 0.02-388 ng/L), and Northwestern China (3.22 ng/L, 0.06-214 ng/L). The level of ΣATZs in groundwater from rural area of China was about 1/3 of that found in tap water. ATZs cannot be removed by boiling tap water. The highest estimated daily intake of ΣATZs (248 ng/kg-body weight/day) was found in the infant population of Changchun, Jilin, Northeastern China.

The occurrence of legacy and novel per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in multiple matrices from a farmland environment was investigated in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei core area of northern China. PFASs were ubiquitously detected in farmland soils, and the detection frequency of 6:2 chlorinated polyfluoroalkyl ether sulfonic acid (6:2 Cl-PFESA) was higher than that of perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (98% vs. 83%). Long-chain PFASs, including 6:2 Cl-PFESA, showed a centered distribution pattern around the metropolis of Tianjin, probably due to the local intensive industrial activity, while trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) showed a decreasing trend from the coast to the inland area. Other than soil, TFA was also found at higher levels than other longer-chain PFASs in dust, maize (Zea mays), poplar (Populus alba) leaf and locust (Locusta migratoria manilens) samples. Both poplar leaves and locusts can be used as promising biomonitoring targets for PFASs in farmland environments, and their accumulation potential corresponds with protein and lipid contents. Apart from being exposed to PFASs via food intake, locusts were likely exposed via uptake from soil and precipitated dust in farmland environments. The biomonitoring of locusts may be more relevant to insectivores, which is important to conducting a comprehensive ecological risk assessment of farmland environments.
