Does the creation of artificial reefs benefit subtidal benthic invertebrates? Is the use of organic farming instead of conventional farming beneficial to bat conservation? Does the installation of exclusion and/or escape devices on fishing nets benefit marine and freshwater mammal conservation? What Works in Conservation has been created to provide practitioners with answers to these and many other questions about practical conservation. This book provides an assessment of the effectiveness of 2526 conservation interventions based on summarized scientific evidence. The 2021 edition containssubstantial new material on bat conservation, terrestrial mammal conservation and marine and freshwater mammals, thus completing the evidence for all mammal species categories. Other chapters cover practical global conservation of primates, amphibians, bats, birds, forests, peatlands, subtidal benthic invertebrates, shrublands and heathlands, as well as the conservation of European farmland biodiversity and some aspects of enhancing natural pest control, enhancing soil fertility, management of captive animals and control of freshwater invasive species. It contains key results from the summarized evidence for each conservation intervention and an assessment of the effectiveness of each by international expert panels. The accompanying website www.conservationevidence.com describes each of the studies individually, and provides full references. This is the fourth author-approved edition of What Works in Conservation, which is revised on an annual basis.

This book provides an assessment of the effectiveness of over 200 conservation interventions based on summarized scientific evidence relevant to the practical global conservation of amphibians, reducing the risk of predation for birds, conservation of European farmland biodiversity and some aspects of enhancing natural pest control and soil fertility. It contains key results from the summarized evidence for each conservation intervention and an assessment of the effectiveness of each by international expert panels. The volume is published in partnership with the Conservation Evidence project and is fully linked to the project's website where background papers such as abstracts and published journal articles can be freely accessed.

Abstract

A partnership has been instituted through the Gulf of Mexico Alliance (GOMA) among the Gulf States to enhance the ecological and economic health of the Gulf of Mexico. Established under the GOMA, the Habitat Conservation and Restoration Team (HCRT) recognized that sediments are integral to and a critical resource in accomplishing the GOMA conservation and restoration objectives. As a result, the Gulf Regional Sediment Management Master Plan (GRSMMP) was initiated for managing sediment resources and corroborates the need for an understanding of regional sediment processes. The plan provides guidelines using the understanding of sediment dynamics to manage resources toward accomplishing environmental restoration, conservation, and preservation while enhancing abilities to make informed, management decisions. A key step in this process is the recognition of a technical framework that provides a foundation associated with regional sediment management processes essential for establishing management guidelines that balance sediment dynamics and available sediment resources with needs and that enhance abilities to make informed management decisions and develop regional strategies. Issues surrounding sediment management, both natural and dredged sediments, have a considerable impact on the ability to sustain coastal habitats. Sediment management must occur on a regional scale unencumbered by agency, state, or political boundaries. Guidelines and recommendations from this effort will aid the Gulf States in more effective management of sediment resources, recognizing they are a part of a regional system involving natural and man- made processes. The effort involves a range of state and federal agencies, as well as nongovernmental representatives. Thus, a technical framework for the GRSMMP was compiled/completed and submitted to the HCRT/GOMA. The decision was made to publish this document as peer-reviewed papers in a special issue of the Journal of Coastal Research for benefit of the global scientific community. Abstract

Adaptation to climate change includes addressing sea level rise and increased storm surges in many coastal areas. Mangroves can substantially reduce the vulnerability of the adjacent coastal land from inundation and erosion. However, climate change poses a large threat to mangroves. This paper quantifies the coastal protection provided by mangroves for 42 developing countries in the current climate, and a future climate change scenario with a one-meter sea level rise and 10 percent intensification of storms. The benefits of the coastal protection provided by mangroves are measured in terms of population and gross domestic product at a reduced risk from inundation; the loss of benefits under climate change is measured as the increased population and gross domestic product at risk. The findings demonstrate that although sea level rise and increased storm intensity would increase storm surge areas and the amounts of built resources at risk, the greatest impact is the expected loss of mangroves. Under current climate and mangrove coverage, 3.5 million people and roughly $400 million in gross domestic product of are at risk. In the future climate change scenario, the vulnerable population and gross domestic product at risk would increase by 103 and 233 percent, respectively. The greatest risk is in East Asia, especially in Indonesia, the Philippines, and Myanmar.
