Organic pollutant fractions should be closely investigated because of their different ecological risks. In this study, we examined the distribution of organophosphate ester (OPE) fractions (labile, stable-adsorbed, and tight-adsorbed fractions) in sediments from Eastern China Marginal Seas (ECMSs) and assessed the influencing factor of the fractions. The mean values of total OPEs in ECMSs are 13.70 ± 6.16 μg L -1 in seawater and 32.04 ± 14.31 μg kg -1 in sediment. The results showed that OPE concentration decreased from the northern to the southern ECMSs, and tris(1-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate and tris(1,3-dichloro-2-propyl) phosphate were the primary OPEs. The mean contents of labile, stable-adsorbed, and tight-adsorbed fractions in the ECMSs were 9.50, 11.29, and 11.71 μg kg -1 , respectively. Labile OPEs were predominant in offshore waters; the percentage of stable- and tight-adsorbed fractions increased progressively with offshore distance in ECMSs. The specific surface area and surface functional groups of sediment were not consistent with the fraction concentrations from the correlation coefficient, but the gross domestic product per coastline agreed well with the fraction distribution. Based on this, we conclude that human activity, rather than physicochemical characteristics of sediments, may be the primary influencing factor of the relative distribution of different OPE concentration fractions in ECMSs., (© 2022. The operation of coastal nuclear power plants and thermal power plants (CNATPPs) can cause regional sea surface temperature (SST) increases. To assess their effects on coastal ecosystems, the scope and extent of their impacts must be understood. We aimed to quantitatively assess the SST increases caused by thermal discharge under climate warming by comparing SSTs between control and test groups and among different offshore buffer zones based on daily MODIS SST data from 2002 to 2017. The results showed that (1) a good correlation occurred between the CNATPP installed capacity and SST increase in the 0-2 km offshore waters; (2) the SST increase caused by thermal discharge was the largest in summer and the smallest in winter; and (3) the effect of thermal discharge occurred within 2 km offshore when the installed capacity exceeded 2000 MW and extended to 5 km when it reaches more than 4000 MW., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier Ltd. In recent years, to meet the needs of economic development, an increasing number of coastal nuclear power plants and thermal power plants (CNATPPs) have used seawater as the source and sink of cooling water. Considering six CNATPPs along the coast of China, based on the model of conservation of mass and energy for an environmental fluid medium, this study quantitatively evaluates the thermal diffusion capacity (TDC) and contribution rate of factors influencing the thermal plume. The results showed that (1) the current velocity, shoreline topography and horizontal diffusion coefficient are linearly correlated with the TDC. The former two variables were the same and the largest and are highly sensitive parameters; (2) the average contribution rates of the current velocity and shoreline topography were the largest at 0.32, and that of the water depth ranged from 0 to 0.28; (3) the shoreline topography close to the outfall affects the TDC of the emitting source of CNATPPs, rather than the geographical location; and (4) this study can provide a comprehensive measurement tool for the planning, site selection and layout of CNATPPs to reduce the impact of their thermal pollution on aquatic organisms in the receiving water. Sediment and marine organism samples collected from Haizhou Bay and Lusi fishing ground in South Yellow Sea, China were analysed for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The concentrations of 16 PAHs in marine organisms ranged from 127.43 to 350.53 ng/g dry weight (dw, Haizhou Bay fishing ground) and from 86.37 to 213.02 ng/g dw (Lusi fishing ground). The dominant compounds were 2- and 3-ring PAHs in marine organism tissues. The main PAH sources were found to be coal combustion. Specific habitat, feeding habit, trophic level and environmental differences may affect the PAH levels in marine organisms in our study area. The biota-sediment accumulation factor (BSAF) decreased with increasing PAH log K ow and BSAF values might differ in response to various environmental conditions and species. The excess cancer risk from PAH-contaminated seafood consumption was slightly higher than the guideline value (10 -6 ), but much lower than the priority risk level (10 -4 )., (Copyright © 2020. We analyzed the distribution and bioaccumulation of six heavy metals (Cu, Pb, Zn, Cr, Cd and Hg) in marine organisms, water, and sediments from China's Hainan and Zhoushan coastal regions. In all marine organism, seawater, and sediment samples, Zn and Hg had the highest and lowest concentrations, respectively. Heavy metals in marine organisms varied by region and species, with concentrations being higher in Zhoushan than in Hainan (except for Zn) and in crab than in fish. Marine organisms' ability to digest and eliminate heavy metals (bioaccumulation ability), based on bioaccumulation factors, was significantly higher for heavy metals in seawater than in sediment. Higher sediment background values may explain the higher heavy metal concentrations in crab. Generally, marine organisms' bioaccumulation ability was higher for Cu and Zn and lower for Pb. At present, the study of microplastic sources is in a relatively preliminary stage due to the complexity of microplastic features in the environment. Based on a literature review, we developed a source-specific classification system for the quantitative analysis of microplastic sources. The classification system includes ten types of microplastics based on morphology and composition and can identify their main sources and the associated probabilities. To reflect the complexity of types and sources in the regional combination of microplastics, we first propose a microplastic diversity index (D 1-D '(MP)). We use the South China Sea as an example to carry out quantitative source analysis and calculate the diversity index. Eight types of microplastics were found, mainly consisting of maritime coatings (type "Gran_coat") (33.0%) and synthetic fibers (type "Fib_thin") (29.6%). We also found that the diversity increased with offshore distance. In addition, we partitioned surface microplastics globally according to a two-dimensional microplastic abundance-diversity index. We believe that these indicators can effectively reflect pollution status and ultimately lead to different types of control measures. In the future, additional indicators for the characterization of microplastics must be included in the classification system to establish a one-to-one source analysis system for microplastic characteristics and source apportionment. Despite the rapid construction of offshore wind farms, the available information regarding the risks of this type of development in terms of emerging pollutants, particularly microplastics, is scarce. In this study, we quantified the level of microplastic pollution at an offshore wind farm in the Yellow Sea, China, in 2016. The abundance of microplastics was 0.330 ± 0.278 items/m 3 in the surface water and 2.58 ± 1.14 items/g (dry) in the sediment. To the best of our knowledge, the level of microplastic pollution in our study area was slightly higher than that in coastal areas around the world. The microplastics detected in the surface waters and sediments were mainly fibrous (75.3% and 68.7%, respectively) and consisted of some granules and films. The microplastics in the samples might originate from garments or ropes via wastewater discharge. The abundance of plastic in the water and sediment samples collected from the wind farm area was lower than that in the samples collected from outside the wind farm area. The anthropogenic hydrodynamic effect was the main factor affecting the local distribution of microplastics. The presence of a wind farm could increase the bed shear stress during ebb tide, disturbing the bed sediment, facilitating its initiation and transport, and ultimately increasing the ease of washing away the microplastics adhered to the sediment. Hydrological data, such as precipitation, is fundamental for planning, designing, developing, and managing water resource projects as well as for hydrologic research. An optimal raingauge network leads to more accurate estimates of mean or point precipitation at any site over the watershed. Some studies in the past have suggested increasing gauge network density for reducing the estimation error. However, more stations mean more cost of installation and monitoring. This study proposes an approach on the basis of kriging and entropy theory to determine an optimal network design in the city of Shanghai, China. Unlike the past studies using kriging interpolation and entropy theory for network design, the approach developed in the current study not only used the kriging method as an interpolator to determine rainfall data at ungauged locations but also incorporated the minimum kriging standard error (KSE) and maximum net information (NI) content. The approach would thus lead to an optimal network and would enable the reduction of kriging standard error of precipitation estimates throughout the watershed and achieve an optimum rainfall information. This study also proposed an NI-KSE-based criterion which is dependent on a single-objective optimization. To evaluate the final optimal gauge network, areal average rainfall was estimated and its accuracy was compared with that obtained with the existing rain gauge network., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier Inc. Intensive anthropogenic activities have a serious negative effect on the Jiangsu coastal area of China, especially on the distinctive intertidal zone. Humans are trying to eliminate this effect by taking protection and eco-compensation measures. However, when trying to determine the ecological status and quantify the anthropogenic impact for this area, the complex relationship between ecosystems and environmental stress leads to difficulties in reflecting general environmental quality. This study assessed the benthic ecological status of 10 transects (three stations/transect) across six different typologies over six years (2007, 2009-2013) in the Jiangsu intertidal zone. A unitary assessment of each transect was conducted using the multivariate AZTI Marine Biotic Index (M-AMBI), along with a radar chart (and its parameters). In the Jiangsu intertidal zone, the ecological status was noted as good or moderate at most sampling stations. Among the six assessed years, 2010 had the highest ecological status, while 2007 had the lowest. As for transects, transect 1 had the highest ratings, and transect 3 had the lowest ratings. Various stresses and advantageous human intervention and contributed to the ecological status for the different areas. The M-AMBI could be used in the future as a suitable index to assess the benthic ecological status of the Jiangsu intertidal zone. To assess the environmental risks of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), 48 and 45 sediments were collected from the Yangtze River Estuary (YRE) and Pearl River Estuary (PRE), respectively. The toxicity equivalency concentration (TEQ) in the YRE and PRE were ranged from 1.68 to 76.13 and 9.28 to 129.24ngTEQg -1 , respectively. Results of risk quotient suggest that ecological risks of two estuaries are at a moderate level, but are higher in the PRE than YRE. The increment lifetime cancer risks (ILCR) from the YRE via ingestion and dermal contact were 1×10 -6 to 5.6×10 -5 and 4×10 -6 to 1.6×10 -4 , and ranged from 7×10 -6 to 9.4×10 -5 and 2×10 -5 to 2.8×10 -4 in the PRE. ILCR results suggest that some low and moderate cancer risk exists in the YRE and PRE. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are mainly produced by incomplete combustion and are used as indicators of anthropogenic activities on the environment. This study analyses the PAHs level in the Yangtze River Estuary (YRE), an important component of Yangtze River and a developed and populated region in China. Surface sediments were collected from 77 sites at the YRE and its adjacent coastal zone (IACZ) for a comprehensive study of PAHs. Kriging interpolation technology and Positive matrix factorization (PMF) model were applied to explore the spatial distribution and sources of PAHs. Concentrations of 16 PAHs (ΣPAHs) varied from 27.2 ng g(-1) to 621.6 ng g(-1) dry weight, with an average value of 158.2 ng g(-1). Spatially, ΣPAHs exhibited wide fluctuation and exhibited an increasing tendency from north to south. In addition, ΣPAHs exhibited a decreasing trend with increasing distance between the estuary and IACZ. The deposition flux of PAHs indicated that more than 107.8 t a(-1) PAHs was deposited in the study area annually. The results of the PMF model revealed that anthropogenic activities were the main sources of PAHs in the study area. Vehicle emissions and marine engines were the most important sources and accounted for 40.9% of the pollution. Coal combustion, petrogenic sources, and wood combustion were other sources that contributed 23.9%, 23.6%, and 11.5%, respectively.
