We report a paper-based chemosensor array device (PCSAD) for the quantitative detection of oxyanions including the herbicide glyphosate (GlyP) in aqueous media. The mechanism of the oxyanion detection relies on a coordination-binding-based sensor array. In this study, the competitive coordination binding among Zn2+, four catechol dyes, and seven oxyanions caused noticeable colour changes. The colour changes were employed for qualitative and quantitative analyses using an in-house automated image-processing algorithm with pattern recognition for digital images. A linear discrimination analysis discerned similarly structured oxyanions with 100% accuracy. The regression analysis allowed the accurate quantification of GlyP in the herbicide products with a limit of detection of 16 mg/L, which is lower than the health advisory value for children (20 mg/L) stipulated by the environmental protection agency (EPA). PCSAD is a powerful sensor device for the on-site quantification of aqueous anions for environmental assessment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Use of recycled fiber material for the production of paper and paperboard has a significant share in solving problems related to environmental protection and conservation of energy resources. One of the most important processes for the paper recycling with printing press is a deinking. Perspective method for deinking of waste paper by the method of flotation is the enzyme treatment at neutral pH. The aim of this work is to study the deinking of recycled paper with offset printing press through flotation and use of enzymes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: This paper discusses the relationship between environmental and economic performance and the influence of corporate strategies with regard to sustainability and the environment. After formulating a theoretical model, results are reported from an empirical analysis of the European paper manufacturing industry. New data are used to test hypotheses derived from the theoretical model, using environmental performance indices representing different corporate environmental strategy orientations. In particular, an emissions-based index largely reflecting end-of-pipe strategies and an inputs-based index reflecting integrated pollution prevention are distinguished. For the emissions-based index, a predominantly negative relationship between environmental and economic performance is found, whereas for the inputs-based index no significant link is found. This is consistent with the theoretical model, which predicts the possibility of different relationships. The results also show that for firms with pollution prevention-oriented corporate environmental strategies, the relationship between environmental and economic performance is more positive, thus making improvements in corporate sustainability more likely. Based on this last insight, managerial implications of this are discussed with regard to strategy choices, investment decisions and operations management. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

PAPER , *SURVEYS , *WOOD products , *FIBERS , *ENVIRONMENTAL protection , *NATURAL resources , *BIOTIC communities , *FOREST products - Abstract
The article presents information on the findings of a recent survey of Fortune 100 companies encouraging more conscious use of paper and wood products. According to the report of this survey, just seven Fortune 100 companies include responsible use of wood products in their environmental policies. Another shocking truth is that paper is one of mankind's most resource-intensive products with significant impacts on ecosystems around the world. the fact is that over one-third of all wood harvested worldwide goes into papermaking. A diverse group of NGOs known as the Environmental Paper Network has collaborated through a Common Vision platform that calls for systemic short and long-term changes in the sourcing of fibers and the production, distribution and consumption of paper. New York-based Mohawk Paper Mills Inc., the largest producer of premium text and cover papers in the U.S., now meets 38% of its energy needs with windpower. The company has become the second ranking industrial purchaser of renewable energy in the country and the strategy is starting to pay dividends in a time of escalating energy costs.

The article discusses the controversy over Google's claim of environmental stewardship for its Go Paperless in 2013 initiative. Google's campaign to go paperless includes an online and social media presence and a monthly newsletter with tips for readers to reduce paper consumption. The print industry has reacted negatively to Google's campaign message that digital is environmentally preferable to paper.

The article discusses the issue of sustainable buildings. Now people can live in a paper house that is so strong even stones would not make a dent. Researchers Kate Thayer and Clyde Curry of Marathon, Texas tell several advantages of building with recycled paper. For the past four years they have been testing and building with various forms of papercrete, manageable-sized bricks made of recycled paper products and Portland cement. With readily available raw materials and short construction times, interest is growing in the concept of turning trash paper and cardboard into inexpensive houses that are strong, well insulated and easily built. Papercrete provides strength without the weight of concrete, making it an ideal material for building arches, domes and vaulted ceilings. Construction costs with papercrete are estimated at 20 to 30 percent less than conventional housing. Scan Sands built his ecologically responsible home in Columbus, New Mexico with $500 in materials. Papercrete structures also require only 50 percent of the energy needed to heat and cool conventional buildings.

The article presents questions and answers related to environment. A person asks whether bamboo is really an environmental friendly alternative to wood for making paper. Experts at the periodical have replied that bamboo is a renewable resource and a good raw material for many goods including paper. Another reader asks about green-friendly hardwood floor waxes that can be used in homes. Beeswax, carnauba wax and natural resin paste formula are good dust-resistant coats without harsh chemicals.
