Quantitative knowledge of the surface energy balance is essential for the prediction of weather and climate. However, a multitude of studies from around the world indicate that the turbulent heat fluxes are generally underestimated using eddy-covariance measurements, and hence, the energy balance is not closed. This energy-balance-closure problem, which has been heavily covered in the literature for more than 25 years, is the topic of the present review, in which we provide an overview of the potential reason for the lack of closure. We demonstrate the effects of the diurnal cycle on the energy balance closure, and address questions with regard to the partitioning of the energy balance residual between the sensible and the latent fluxes, and whether the magnitude of the flux underestimation can be predicted based on other variables typically measured at micrometeorological stations. Remaining open questions are discussed and potential avenues for future research on this topic are laid out. Integrated studies, combining multi-tower experiments and scale-crossing, spatially-resolving lidar and airborne measurements with high-resolution large-eddy simulations, are considered to be of critical importance for enhancing our understanding of the underlying transport processes in the atmospheric boundary layer.

With 450,000 km2 Kobresia (syn. Carex) pygmaea dominated pastures in the eastern Tibetan highlands are the world's largest pastoral alpine ecosystem forming a durable turf cover at 3000–6000 m a.s.l. Kobresia's resilience and competitiveness is based on dwarf habit, predominantly below-ground allocation of photo assimilates, mixture of seed production and clonal growth, and high genetic diversity. Kobresia growth is co-limited by livestock-mediated nutrient withdrawal and, in the drier parts of the plateau, low rainfall during the short and cold growing season. Overstocking has caused pasture degradation and soil deterioration over most parts of the Tibetan highlands and is the basis for this man-made ecosystem. Natural autocyclic processes of turf destruction and soil erosion are initiated through polygonal turf cover cracking, and accelerated by soil-dwelling endemic small mammals in the absence of predators. The major consequences of vegetation cover deterioration include the release of large amounts of C, earlier diurnal formation of clouds, and decreased surface temperatures. These effects decrease the recovery potential of Kobresia pastures and make them more vulnerable to anthropogenic pressure and climate change. Traditional migratory rangeland management was sustainable over millennia, and possibly still offers the best strategy to conserve and possibly increase C stocks in the Kobresia turf. (Less)

Extensive studies are available that analyse time series of carbon dioxide and water flux measurements of FLUXNET sites over many years and link these results to climate change such as changes in atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration, air temperature and growing season length and other factors. Many of the sites show trends to a larger carbon uptake. Here we analyse time series of net ecosystem exchange, gross primary production, respiration, and evapotranspiration of four forest sites with particularly long measurement periods of about 20 years. The regular trends shown are interrupted by periods with higher or lower increases of carbon uptake. These breakpoints can be of very different origin and include forest decline, increased vegetation period, drought effects, heat waves, and changes in site heterogeneity. The influence of such breakpoints should be included in long-term studies of land-atmosphere exchange processes.

The eddy-covariance method represents the only direct way to measure the turbulent fluxes of momentum, temperature, trace gases, and particles between the land surface and the atmosphere. It is a direct measurement of the net carbon-dioxide budget and dry deposition. For that purpose, it is widely used in networks of long-term ecosystem observatories around the world and is the centerpiece of intensive field campaigns investigating biosphere–atmosphere exchange processes. The instrumentation typically consists of a 3-D sonic anemometer/thermometer and one or more additional gas analyzers that are able to measure the high-frequency fluctuations of the scalar to be transported. These instruments are mounted on a meteorological mast to sample the turbulent field under the assumption that eddies are carried along with the mean wind. Further prerequisites of the method are horizontal homogeneity, steady-state conditions and well-developed turbulence. For successful application of the method, a series of quality tests and flux corrections is required, which will be presented together with commonly used instrumentation and postprocessing software. Moreover, we will provide a historical overview and provide guidelines for site selection and setup and the necessary maintenance procedures.

Actual and maximum rates of evaporation (E) and evapotranspiration (ET) are important to the operation of atmospheric process models and for hydrologic and agricultural modeling. Because rates of evapotranspiration are limited by both the available energy at the surface and the availability of water, a variety of techniques can be used for estimation. The near-maximum ET under nonlimiting water availability can be closely approximated by the reference ET concept using near-surface observations of air temperature, humidity, wind speed, and solar radiation via the Penman–Monteith or a similar method. The determination of actual rates of ET when water is limiting demands a more complex approach, and often requires daily (or even more frequent) water balance data for the upper soil layers. An alternative is to measure the actual ET using micrometeorological techniques such as the eddy-covariance and Bowen ratio methods. The application of standardized calculations for the reference ET is discussed, as are iterative surface energy balance–aerodynamic combinations, which are useful in conditions where water is limiting.

Measurements in the atmosphere differ from measurements in other media because of the thermodynamic and radiative properties of air (e. g., low density, low heat capacity, and transparency to a large part of the electromagnetic spectrum) and the fact that the air is almost always in (often turbulent) motion. The vertical and horizontal distributions of meteorological elements and the spatial and temporal scales of processes strongly influence the selection of appropriate measurement methods and devices. This chapter gives a brief overview of the different ways of classifying atmospheric measurements, the relevant states and processes that influence measurements in the atmosphere, and basic measurement techniques (including some fundamental aspects of the performance and interpretation of these techniques). It focuses in particular on the so-called atmospheric boundary layer, since most measurements are performed in this region and most human activities take place there.

Meteorological measurements are performed by various types of stations, including synoptic weather and climate monitoring stations, agrometeorological stations, and stations that require meteorological data for other purposes, such as to monitor traffic or air pollution or for private use. This chapter describes the history of stations that carry out atmospheric measurements, as well as recent developments in this field, mostly involving the use of new technologies to measure meteorological parameters. The specifics of the installation of stations for different purposes and the main parameters measured are summarized. The accuracy of the atmospheric measurements and the sensor system maintenance required vary depending on the intended application of the data. Therefore, the requirements for the measured meteorological parameters may differ from those defined in the corresponding parameter-specific chapters of this Handbook.

CO2 release from thawing permafrost is both a consequence of, and a driver for, global warming, making accurate information on the Arctic carbon cycle essential for climate predictions. Eddy covariance data obtained from Bayelva (Svalbard) in 2015, using well‐established processing and quality control techniques, indicate that most of the annual net CO2 uptake is due to high CO2 flux events in winter that are associated with strong winds and probably relate to technical limitations of the gas analyzer. Emission events may relate to either (unidentified) instrumental limitations or to physical processes such as CO2 advection. Excluding the high winter uptake events yields an annual CO2 budget close to zero; whether or not these events are included can, therefore, have a considerable effect on carbon budget calculations. Further investigation will be crucial to pinpoint the factors causing these high CO2 flux events and to derive scientifically substantiated flux processing standards.

Wildfires typically affect multiple forest ecosystem services, with carbon sequestration being affected both directly, through the combustion of vegetation, litter and soil organic matter, and indirectly, through perturbation of the energy and matter balances. Post-fire carbon fluxes continue to be poorly studied at the ecosystem scale, especially during the initial window of disturbance when changes in environmental conditions can be very pronounced due to the deposition and subsequent mobilization of a wildfire ash layer and the recovery of the vegetation. Therefore, an eddy-covariance system was installed in a burnt area as soon as possible after a wildfire that had occurred on 13 August 2017 and has been operating from the 43rd post-fire day onwards. The study site was specifically selected in a Mediterranean woodland area dominated by maritime pine stands with a low stature that had burned at high severity. The carbon fluxes recorded during the first post-fire hydrological year tended to be very low so that a specific procedure for the analysis and, in particular, gap filling of the eddy-covariance data had to be developed. Still, the carbon fluxes varied noticeably during the first post-fire year, broadly revealing five consecutive periods. During the rainless period after the wildfire, fluxes were reduced but, somewhat surprisingly, indicated a net assimilation. With the onset of the autumn rainfall, fluxes increased and corresponded to a net emission, while they became insignificant with the start of the winter. From the midwinter onwards, net fluxes became negative, indicating a weak carbon update during spring followed by a strong uptake during summer. Over the first post-fire year as a whole, the cumulative net ecosystem exchange was −347 g C m−2, revealing a relatively fast recovery of the carbon sink function of the ecosystem. This recovery was mainly due to understory species, both resprouter and seeder species, since pine recruitment was reduced. Specific periods during the first post-fire year were analyzed in detail to improve process understanding. Perhaps most surprisingly, dew formation and, more specifically, its subsequent evaporation were found to play a role in carbon emissions during the rainless period immediately after fire, involving a mechanism distinct from degassing the ash–soil pores by infiltrating water. The use of a special wavelet technique was fundamental for this inference.

While stationary measurements can be performed relatively frequently, they do not permit detailed spatial analyses of meteorological variables, particularly air temperature. This problem can be resolved by making the sensor mobile and then taking measurements at a variety of locations within the area of interest. Mobile measurements have therefore been used in climatological research since the early twentieth century. Due to improvements in and the miniaturization of the relevant measurement technologies, mobile measurements have undergone a renaissance since the 1970s. Urban climatology has become an important field of great scientific interest. The realization that the measurements of just one urban weather station—generally located (in line with the recommendations of the World Meteorological Organization) on short-cut lawn—is not sufficient to represent all of the climates present in an urban area has led to the acceptance of and even the need for mobile measurements taken on cars, bikes, or buses. New methodologies have been implemented, and advances in digital measurement and storage on data loggers have made mobile measurements an important tool for spatially distributed studies of air temperature, air humidity, and air pollution.

This study investigates turbulence characteristics as observed at a 200 m tall mast at a hilly and complex site. It thereby concentrates on turbulence statistics, which are important for the site suitability analysis of a wind turbine. The directional variations in terrain are clearly reflected in the observed turbulence intensities and drag. Integral turbulence statistics showed some variations from their typical flat terrain values. Footprint modelling was used to model the area of effect and to relate the observed turbulence characteristics to the ruggedness and roughness within the estimated fetch area. Among the investigated turbulence quantities, the normalised standard deviation of the wind velocity along the streamlines showed the highest correlation with the effective roughness and ruggedness within the footprint followed by the normalised friction velocity and normalised standard deviation of the vertical wind speed. A differentiation between the effects of roughness and ruggedness was not possible, as forest cover and complex orography are highly correlated at the investigated site. An analysis of turbulence intensity by wind speed indicated a strong influence of atmospheric stability. Stable conditions lead to an overall reduction in turbulence intensity for a wind speed range between approx. 6–12 m s−1 when compared to neutral stratification. The variance of the horizontal wind speed strongly varied over the height range which is typical for a modern wind turbine and was in the order of the differences between different standard turbulence classes for wind turbines.

On 20 March 2015, a total solar eclipse occurred over Ny-Alesund (78.9° N, 11.9° E), Svalbard, under ideal conditions with clear sky. The cycle of the radiation fluxes is comparable with other experiments during eclipses, with even the upward longwave radiation showing significant changes, with a delay to the shortwave radiation and a slowly linear increase after the totality. Also, under polar conditions, an increase of the wind velocity before and a decrease after the totality was found, which is an indicator of the generation of an “Eclipse cyclone”. This change of the wind direction generated a local wind system with a near-surface-layer katabatic flow. During the eclipse, a remarkably large sensible heat flux was observed. The turbulent fluxes were analysed using a wavelet technique with 1-minute time resolution, which is the ideal method for investigating these highly non-steady conditions. No influences on the boundary layer structure as measured with radiosondes were found, with the exception of a wind direction change during the eclipse cyclone below the shallow inversion layer.

This study aimed at quantifying potential negative effects of instrument heating to improve eddy covariance flux data quality in cold environments. Our overarching objective was to minimize heating-related bias in annual CO2 budgets from an Arctic permafrost system. We used continuous eddy-covariance measurements covering three full years within an Arctic permafrost ecosystem with parallel sonic anemometers operation with activated heating and without heating as well as parallel operation of open- and closed-path gas analyzers, the latter serving as a reference. Our results demonstrate that the sonic anemometer heating has a direct effect on temperature measurements while the turbulent wind field is not affected. As a consequence, fluxes of sensible heat are increased by an average 5 W m-2 with activated heating, while no direct effect on other scalar fluxes was observed. However, the biased measurements in sensible heat fluxes can have an indirect effect on the CO2 fluxes in case they are used as input for a density-flux WPL correction of an open-path gas analyzer. Evaluating the self-heating effect of the open-path gas analyzer by comparing CO2 flux measurements between open- and closed-path gas analyzers we found systematically higher CO2 uptake recorded with the open-path sensor, leading to a cumulative annual offset of 96 gC m-2, which was not only the result of the cold winter season but also due to substantial self-heating effects during summer. With an inclined sensor mounting, only a fraction of the self-heating correction for vertically mounted instruments is required.

Extreme drought events challenge ecosystem functioning. Ecological response to drought is studied worldwide in a growing number of field experiments by rain-out shelters. Yet, few meta-analyses face severe challenges in the comparability of studies. This is partly because build-up of drought stress in rain-out shelters is modified by ambient weather conditions. Rain-out shelters can further create confounding effects (radiation, temperature), which may influence plant responses. Yet, a quantification of ecophysiological effects within rain-out shelters under opposing ambient weather conditions and of microclimatological artifacts is missing. Here, we examined phytometers—standardized potted individuals of Plantago lanceolata—under rain-out shelter, rain-out shelter artifact control, and ambient control during opposing outside microclimatological conditions. Furthermore, we tested for artifacts of rain-out shelters on plant responses in a long-term semi-natural grassland experiment. Phytometer plants below the rain-out shelters showed lower stomatal conductance, maximum quantum efficiency, and leaf water potential during warm ambient conditions with high evaporative demand than during cold conditions with low evaporative demand. Plant performance was highly correlated with ambient temperature and vapor pressure deficit (VPD). Rain-out shelter artifacts on plant responses were nonsignificant. Rain-out shelters remain a viable tool for studying ecosystem responses to drought. However, drought manipulations using rain-out shelters are strongly modified by ambient weather conditions. Attributing the results from rain-out shelter studies to drought effects and comparability among studies and study years therefore requires the quantification of the realized drought stress, for example, by relating ecosystem responses to measured microclimatological parameters such as air temperature and VPD.

High-elevation grasslands of the Cyperaceae Kobresia pygmaea cover nearly half a million km(2) on the Tibetan Plateau. As a consequence of climate change, precipitation patterns in this monsoon influenced region may change with possible consequences for grassland productivity. Yet, not much is known about the water cycle in this second largest alpine ecosystem of the world. We measured the evapotranspiration of a high-elevation Kobresia pasture system at 4400 m a.s.l. in the south-eastern part of the plateau in two summers using three different approaches, weighable micro-lysimeters, eddy covariance measurements, and water balance modeling with the soil-plant-atmosphere transfer model SEWAB. In good agreement among the three approaches, we found ET rates of 4-6 mm d(-1) in moist summer periods (June-August) and similar to 2 mm d(-1) in dry periods, despite the high elevation and a leaf area index of only similar to 1. Measured ET rates were comparable to rates reported from alpine grasslands at 1500-2500 m a.s.l. in temperate mountains, and also matched ET rates of managed lowland grasslands in the temperate zone. At the study site with 430 mm annual precipitation, low summer rainfall reduced ET significantly and infiltration into the subsoil occurred only in moist periods. Our results show that the evapotranspiration of high-elevation grasslands at 4400 m can be as high as in lowland grasslands despite large elevational changes in abiotic and biotic drivers of ET, and periodic water shortage is likely to influence large parts of the Tibetan Kobresia pastures. Canopy structure is one of the most important vegetation characteristics for land–atmosphere interactions, as it determines the energy and scalar exchanges between the land surface and the overlying air mass. In this study we evaluated the performance of a newly developed multi-layer energy budget in the ORCHIDEE-CAN v1.0 land surface model (Organising Carbon and Hydrology In Dynamic Ecosystems – CANopy), which simulates canopy structure and can be coupled to an atmospheric model using an implicit coupling procedure. We aim to provide a set of acceptable parameter values for a range of forest types. Top-canopy and sub-canopy flux observations from eight sites were collected in order to conduct this evaluation. The sites crossed climate zones from temperate to boreal and the vegetation types included deciduous, evergreen broad-leaved and evergreen needle-leaved forest with a maximum leaf area index (LAI; all-sided) ranging from 3.5 to 7.0. The parametrization approach proposed in this study was based on three selected physical processes – namely the diffusion, advection, and turbulent mixing within the canopy. Short-term sub-canopy observations and long-term surface fluxes were used to calibrate the parameters in the sub-canopy radiation, turbulence, and resistance modules with an automatic tuning process. The multi-layer model was found to capture the dynamics of sub-canopy turbulence, temperature, and energy fluxes. The performance of the new multi-layer model was further compared against the existing single-layer model. Although the multi-layer model simulation results showed few or no improvements to both the nighttime energy balance and energy partitioning during winter compared with a single-layer model simulation, the increased model complexity does provide a more detailed description of the canopy micrometeorology of various forest types. The multi-layer model links to potential future environmental and ecological studies such as the assessment of in-canopy species vulnerability to climate change, the climate effects of disturbance intensities and frequencies, and the consequences of biogenic volatile organic compound (BVOC) emissions from the terrestrial ecosystem.

Recently reported trends of carbon dioxide uptakes pose the question if trends may results of the digitalization of gas analysers and sonic anemometers used in the 1990s. Simulating a 12-bit digitalization and the instrument error reported for the R2 and R3 sonic anemometers elsewhere, the influence of these deficits in comparison to the 16-bit digitalization were quantified. Both issues have an effect only on trace gas fluxes of small magnitude, mainly for the carbon rather than for the water vapour fluxes. The influence on the annual net ecosystem exchange is negligible.

The Tibetan highlands host the largest alpine grassland ecosystems worldwide, bearing soils that store substantial stocks of carbon (C) that are very sensitive to land use changes. This study focuses on the cycling of photoassimilated C within a Kobresia pygmaea pasture, the dominating ecosystems on the Tibetan highlands. We investigated short-term effects of grazing cessation and the role of the characteristic Kobresia root turf on C fluxes and belowground C turnover. By combining eddy-covariance measurements with (13)CO₂ pulse labeling we applied a powerful new approach to measure absolute fluxes of assimilates within and between various pools of the plant-soil-atmosphere system. The roots and soil each store roughly 50% of the overall C in the system (76 Mg C ha(-1)), with only a minor contribution from shoots, which is also expressed in the root:shoot ratio of 90. During June and July the pasture acted as a weak C sink with a strong uptake of approximately 2 g C m(-2) d(-1) in the first half of July. The root turf was the main compartment for the turnover of photoassimilates, with a subset of highly dynamic roots (mean residence time 20 days), and plays a key role for the C cycling and C storage in this ecosystem. The short-term grazing cessation only affected aboveground biomass but not ecosystem scale C exchange or assimilate allocation into roots and soil.

The ACASA (Advanced Canopy-Atmosphere-Soil Algorithm) model, with a higher order closure for tall vegetation, has already been successfully tested and validated for spruce forests. The aim of this paper is the further application for a clearing with a heterogeneous structure of the underlying surface. The comparison with flux data shows a good agreement with a footprint aggregated tile approach of the model. However, the results of a comparison with a tile approach on the basis of the mean land use classification of the clearing is not significantly different. It is assumed that the footprint model is not accurate enough to separate small scale heterogeneities. All measured fluxes are corrected for energy balance closure with a Bowen ratio and a buoyancy flux correction method. The comparison with the model – where the energy balance is closed – shows that the buoyancy correction for Bowen ratios > 1.5 better fits the measured data. For lower Bowen ratios, the correction probably lies between both methods, but the amount of available data was too small to make a conclusion. With an assumption of a similarity between water and carbon dioxide fluxes, no correction of the net ecosystem exchange is necessary for Bowen ratios > 1.5.

This chapter summarizes the significant findings of the research on coherent structures contributed by investigations conducted at the Waldstein-Weidenbrunnen site from several field campaigns. The description of the quasi-online wavelet detection algorithm and of the coherent flux computation method using a triple decomposition is followed by a presentation of their application to define and diagnose vertical and horizontal couplings in forest canopies. It is demonstrated that these exchange regimes provide physically and biologically meaningful proxies for the communication of air and integration of the spatially separated sinks and sources as a result of the stratified canopy architecture. We continue by presenting two innovative applications of the coherent forest exchange that include the computation of daytime respiration fluxes directly from above-canopy eddy-covariance measurements and the explanation of stationary gradients in the sub-canopy CO2 field causing systematic advection as a result of the spatial heterogeneity of the forest architecture. Advantages and limitations of both are discussed. The chapter concludes by formulating directions for future research and indicating new observational techniques that may have the potential to improve understanding and quantifying the forest coherent exchange.

One main topic of scientific and public interest regarding the Waldstein research site continues to be the high-quality observation of weather and air quality that captures the meteorology and climate of this particular site and the neighboring regions. Based on meteorological measurements made at the Waldstein facility from 1994 to the present, several studies—mainly of air temperature, precipitation, fog, wet deposition, and air pollutants—were conducted over the last 20 years. The expected strong global rise of earth’s basic air temperature will have a more moderated magnitude in Franconia, but the already continental location within the Central European climate zones, in combination with a heterogeneous landscape with imposed local orographic wind systems, will increase and reinforce diurnal and seasonal amplitudes and spatial variety of basic meteorological and air chemical elements and induce a higher risk of local extreme weather (climate) or smog (ozone) events. Forced by the change of macro- and mesoscale atmospheric circulation patterns across the northern hemisphere, the frequency and intensity of such weather-changing situations have increased during the last three or four decades in parallel with the span and the unpredictability of extreme weather conditions. That has, and will continue to have, an adjustment effect on air temperature and air humidity, sunshine duration and air pollution, wind (storm), date and duration of precipitation, and wet deposition of nitrogen, sulfur, salts, and metals and therefore a strong impact to the ecosystems at Waldstein.

The chapter gives a brief overview of the measuring sites of the Bayreuth Center of Ecology and Environmental Research at the Waldstein mountain, Germany, northeast Bavaria, with a special focus on the Waldstein-Weidenbrunnen site (FLUXNET site DE-Bay) as well as the Pflanzgarten and Kohlerloh sites. The climate of the area, the structure of the forest stands with plant area index profiles, and the soil properties are described. There is a special focus on the tower installations, the permanent program, and the special experimental campaigns. Pictures of all sites and all relevant data are given, while the instrumentation is listed in Appendix A. Due to the storm event “Kyrill” in January 2007, the southern part of the forest was destroyed. A trace gas flux footprint analysis is presented for conditions after a large wind throw.

In this study we analyse eddy-covariance flux measurements of carbon dioxide and water vapour from 18 years at Waldstein–Weidenbrunnen (DE-Bay), a Norway spruce forest site in the Fichtelgebirge, Germany. Standard flux partitioning algorithms have been applied for separation of net ecosystem exchange NEE into gross primary production GPP and ecosystem respiration Reco, as well as gap-filling. The site has always been a carbon sink, and annual net uptake ( − NEE) shows a positive trend with values around 40 g C m−2 a−1 for 1997–1999 up to 615 ± 79 g C m−2 a−1 for 2011–2014. This is related to a strong increase in GPP, while Reco is slightly enhanced. Evapotranspiration increases coherently with NEE, while atmospheric demand, that is, potential evaporation, shows inter-annual variability, but no trend. Comparisons with studies from other warm-temperate coniferous forests show that our NEE estimates are at the upper range of the distribution, but still realistic. Also evapotranspiration estimates, evaluated in the Budyko framework, are in a similar range but with a large inter-annual variability. We identified instrumental problems and variability from different flux partitioning algorithms as a large source of uncertainty, but with only minor influence on the trends found. Warming and rising CO2-concentrations are consistent with the observed trend, but cannot be disentangled from site-specific changes such as the recovery from “Waldsterben” after liming and an increase in heterogeneity after a wind-throw, which likely plays the most important role in the observed dynamics. As such transitions from an “ideal” to a disturbed or heterogeneous site are likely more-often the case at FLUXNET stations built 10–20 years ago, a systematic bias in regional studies can only be avoided by taking each single site history into account.

The interplay between precipitation and evapotranspiration determines the input into the hydrological system of a catchment. Annual values of precipitation, evapotranspiration, and runoff measured at the catchment outlet for the 2002–2009 period were available. Annual precipitation clearly surmounted the sum of evapotranspiration and runoff. Part of the observed discrepancy might be due to the heterogeneity of precipitation and evapotranspiration within the catchment which has not been studied in sufficient detail. Annual evapotranspiration fluxes were remarkably constant during this period, whereas precipitation and runoff exhibited much larger interannual variability.

In 2011, a special experiment was conducted to investigate turbulent structures at the edge between the Waldstein–Weidenbrunnen forest site and the Kohlerloh clearing. A horizontal moving measuring system was used to detect significant gradients of the radiation fluxes, temperature, moisture, ozone, and carbon dioxide concentrations for different situations at day and night. In agreement with other studies, an increase of the turbulent fluxes and ejections at the forest edge could be found. This means that the energy balance closure was also better than that obtained directly at the Weidenbrunnen site. The vertical coupling by coherent structures was often—mainly at daytime—very good. In contrast, the horizontal coupling between the forest and the clearing at the edge was, in most cases, not apparent. For wind directions coming from the forest, the coherent structures did not touch down at the surface of the clearing. These investigations were made with a wavelet tool. A clear indication of secondary circulations between the forest and the clearing was not possible.

At the Waldstein-Weidenbrunnen site, several techniques for data quality control were developed and tested and later on applied at European FLUXNET sites. The history of this development and the specific results for the site form the subject of this chapter. These data quality criteria include integral turbulence characteristics, which are dependent on heterogeneities in the footprint area and inside the canopy. Furthermore, footprint models were applied to determine the footprint climatology and to link these models with the data quality of eddy covariance data. This tool was also applied to find the optimal period for the application of the planar-fit rotation method. The energy balance closure was found to be about 80 % in all periods. These findings were summarized as a schema for data quality control and characterization of FLUXNET sites.

The possibility to use footprint models, which are well established in micrometeorology and ecology, is discussed also for the fine-tuning of the location of wind turbines. A selection of possible models is given. In an example it is shown that differences in the wind power of two nearby located wind turbines can be explained by the presence of forested areas within the footprint.

The objective of this study is to assess the feasibility and quality of eddy-covariance flux measurements from a weight-shift microlight aircraft (WSMA). Firstly, we investigate the precision of the wind measurement (σu,v ≤ 0.09 m s−1, σw = 0.04 m s−1), the lynchpin of flux calculations from aircraft. From here, the smallest resolvable changes in friction velocity (0.02 m s−1), and sensible- (5 W m−2) and latent (3 W m−2) heat flux are estimated. Secondly, a seven-day flight campaign was performed near Lindenberg (Germany). Here we compare measurements of wind, temperature, humidity and respective fluxes between a tall tower and the WSMA. The maximum likelihood functional relationship (MLFR) between tower and WSMA measurements considers the random error in the data, and shows very good agreement of the scalar averages. The MLFRs for standard deviations (SDs, 2–34%) and fluxes (17–21%) indicate higher estimates of the airborne measurements compared to the tower. Considering the 99.5% confidence intervals, the observed differences are not significant, with exception of the temperature SD. The comparison with a large-aperture scintillometer reveals lower sensible heat flux estimates at both tower (−40 to −25%) and WSMA (−25–0%). We relate the observed differences to (i) inconsistencies in the temperature and wind measurement at the tower and (ii) the measurement platforms' differing abilities to capture contributions from non-propagating eddies. These findings encourage the use of WSMA as a low cost and highly versatile flux measurement platform.

This paper introduces a surface model with two soil-layers for use in a high-resolution circulation model that has been modified with an extrapolated surface temperature, to be used for the calculation of turbulent fluxes. A quadratic temperature profile based on the layer mean and base temperature is assumed in each layer and extended to the surface. The model is tested at two sites on the Tibetan Plateau near Nam Co Lake during four days during the 2009 Monsoon season. In comparison to a two-layer model without explicit surface temperature estimate, there is a greatly reduced delay in diurnal flux cycles and the modelled surface temperature is much closer to observations. Comparison with a SVAT model and eddy covariance measurements shows an overall reasonable model performance based on RMSD and cross correlation comparisons between the modified and original model. A potential limitation of the model is the need for careful initialisation of the initial soil temperature profile, that requires field measurements. We show that the modified model is capable of reproducing fluxes of similar magnitudes and dynamics when compared to more complex methods chosen as a reference.

This study investigates whether the 3-D wind vector can be measured reliably from a highly transportable and low-cost weight-shift microlight aircraft. We draw up a transferable procedure to accommodate flow distortion originating from the aircraft body and -wing. This procedure consists of the analysis of aircraft dynamics and seven successive calibration steps. For our aircraft the horizontal wind components receive their greatest single amendment (14 %, relative to the initial uncertainty) from the correction of flow distortion magnitude in the dynamic pressure computation. Conversely the vertical wind component is most of all improved (31 %) by subsequent steps considering the 3-D flow distortion distribution in the flow angle computations. Therein the influences of the aircraft's trim (53 %), as well as changes in the aircraft lift (16 %) are considered by using the measured lift coefficient as explanatory variable. Three independent lines of analysis are used to evaluate the quality of the wind measurement: (a) A wind tunnel study in combination with the propagation of sensor uncertainties defines the systems input uncertainty to ≈0.6 m s−1 at the extremes of a 95 % confidence interval. (b) During severe vertical flight manoeuvres the deviation range of the vertical wind component does not exceed 0.3 m s−1. (c) The comparison with ground based wind measurements yields an overall operational uncertainty (root mean square error) of ≈0.4 m s−1 for the horizontal and ≈0.3 m s−1 for the vertical wind components. No conclusive dependence of the uncertainty on the wind magnitude (−1) or true airspeed (ranging from 23–30 m s−1) is found. Hence our analysis provides the necessary basis to study the wind measurement precision and spectral quality, which is prerequisite for reliable Eddy-Covariance flux measurements.

The Tibetan Plateau (TP) surfaces have been experiencing an overall rapid warming and wetting while wind speed and solar radiation have been declining in the last three decades. This study investigated how climate changes influenced the hydrological cycle on the TP during 1984∼2006. To facilitate the analysis, a land surface model was used to simulate surface water budget at all CMA (China Meteorological Administration) stations on the TP. The simulated results were first validated against observed ground temperature and observation-derived heat flux on the western TP and observed discharge trends on the eastern TP. The response of evaporation and runoff to the climate changes was then analyzed. Major finding are as follows. (1) Surface water balance has been changed in recent decades. Observed precipitation shows insignificant increasing trends in central TP and decreasing trends along the TP periphery while evaporation shows overall increasing trends, leading to decreased discharge at major TP water resource areas (semi-humid and humid zones in the eastern and southern TP). (2) At the annual scale, evaporation is water-limited in dry areas and energy-limited (radiation and air temperature) in wet areas; these constraints can be interpreted by the Budyko-curve. Evaporation in autumns and winters was strongly controlled by soil water storage in summers, weakening the dependence of evaporation on precipitation at seasonal scales. (3) There is a complementary effect between the simulated actual evaporation and potential evaporation, but this complementary relationship may deviate from Bouchet’s hypothesis when vapor pressure deficit (or air temperature) is too low, which suppresses the power of vapor transfer.

This study investigates the near-ground free convection conditions (FCCs) based on eddy covariance (EC) measurements at Nam Co station near the Nam Co Lake on the Tibetan Plateau (TP). The spatial and temporal structure of EC measurements at this station is evaluated by using the comprehensive software package TK2 together with a footprint model. The obtained high-quality turbulent flux data are used to study the occurrence of FCCs, which can be detected with the EC system by calculating the stability parameter. Two types of generation of FCCs can be identified. (1) During the wind direction change of a diurnal thermally forced land-lake circulation system in the morning, strongly reduced wind speeds and simultaneously high buoyancy fluxes lead to a period of dominance of buoyancy over shear, and hence, to the occurrence of FCCs. (2) On days with the appearance of clouds, the land-lake circulation is weakened or reversed, dependent on the temperature gradients between the land and the Nam Co Lake. During the period of adaptation of the land-lake breeze to the alternating situation of heating differences, wind speeds decrease and buoyancy again dominates over shear near the ground. These are the situations where FCCs are also detected during the entire day at Nam Co station. The investigation of FCCs regarding the whole measurement period shows that FCCs can be mainly attributed to case (1) during the non-monsoon period, while FCCs are generated by both mechanisms (1 and 2) during the monsoon season. An impact of the FCCs on the near-ground profiles of air temperature and humidity is demonstrated. The FCCs are assumed to play an important role for the land surface-atmosphere exchange processes and the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) conditions on the TP by providing an effective transport mechanism of near-ground air mass characteristics into upper parts of the ABL.

Within the framework of the international field campaign COPS (Convective and Orographically induced Precipitation Study), a large suite of state-of-the-art meteorological instrumentation was operated, partially combined for the first time. This includes networks of in situ and remote-sensing systems such as the Global Positioning System as well as a synergy of multi-wavelength passive and active remote-sensing instruments such as advanced radar and lidar systems. The COPS field phase was performed from 01 June to 31 August 2007 in a low-mountain area in southwestern Germany/eastern France covering the Vosges mountains, the Rhine valley and the Black Forest mountains. The collected dataset covers the entire evolution of convective precipitation events in complex terrain from their initiation, to their development and mature phase until their decay. Eighteen Intensive Observations Periods with 37 operation days and eight additional Special Observations Periods were performed, providing a comprehensive dataset covering different forcing conditions. In this article, an overview of the COPS scientific strategy, the field phase, and its first accomplishments is given. Highlights of the campaign are illustrated with several measurement examples. It is demonstrated that COPS research provides new insight into key processes leading to convection initiation and to the modification of precipitation by orography, in the improvement of quantitative precipitation forecasting by the assimilation of new observations, and in the performance of ensembles of convection-permitting models in complex terrain.

Two models for predicting near-surface flux and concentration footprints are compared concerning their performance in the presence of heterogeneous surface conditions. One of the models is a conventional Lagrangian backward model and the second an LES model with an embedded Lagrangian footprint model. The latter model reveals generation of thermally induced secondary circulation under such surface heterogeneity. The conventional Lagrangian backward model with simple parameterization of flow conditions mostly performs well in footprint predictions for concentrations and somewhat worse for fluxes, and fails only in areas where flow patterns are dominated by pronounced secondary circulations.

Experimental data of the energy balance and the turbulence network installed during the Convective and Orographically-induced Precipitation Study (COPS) field campaign of 2007 are presented in this study. The network aims at providing continuous surface flux and other surface micrometeorological data of the required high accuracy and quality for further fundamental research. An overview of the turbulence data processing and data quality control, including footprint analysis and a check for internal boundary layers, is given. The consistently applied approach allows for a high comparability of the turbulent flux data of sensible and latent heat. The reaction of surface fluxes during the observed frontal passage during the Intensive Observation Period (IOP) 9c (20 July 2007) is presented. As surface fluxes were measured over different land-use types and at different locations within the COPS area, the effect of land use and orography on turbulent fluxes is discussed with the help of IOP 8b (15 July 2007). The flux differences between individual sites due to varying surface characteristics are often larger than the flux differences with changing altitude. The oasis effect observed for the highly evapotranspirating maize fields is found to increase the residuum of the surface energy balance. At all sites and during both IOPs the occurrence of near-ground free convection conditions (FCCs) is investigated. During the oasis effect, FCCs do not occur. The field campaign ‘Convective and Orographically-induced Precipitation Study’ (COPS) was performed in south-western Germany and eastern France in summer 2007. Within the COPS context this study focused on the process chain of soil moisture, surface fluxes, conditions of the convective boundary layer (CBL), and convection-related parameters. The results were different for valley and mountain sites. Only in the Rhine valley did the ratios of sensible and latent heat to the net radiation at the surface, H0/Q0 and E0/Q0 respectively, reveal a weak dependence on soil moisture. H0/Q0 was lower and E0/Q0 was higher at higher soil moisture. The correlation of the diurnal increase of the equivalent potential temperature, Θe, with the energy supplied by H0 and E0 was found to be lower for higher surface inhomogeneity. Furthermore, only a weak dependence of the CBL depth on the sensible surface heat flux was found for valley sites and was non-existent for the mountain crest. The convective indices in the whole COPS domain were found to depend on Θe in the CBL. The absolute values of conditional and potential instability are not necessarily the decisive parameters for convection to occur, because highest instability was observed in the Rhine valley while convection was preferably initiated over the mountains. Convective inhibition (CIN) was positively correlated with the capping strength and negatively with the CBL height: the higher the CBL, the lower the upper threshold of CIN. The frequency of low CIN was higher in the Black Forest mountains than in the Rhine valley, which facilitates convection initiation over the mountain sites. The turbulence data measured at two levels (i.e., 8.7 and 2.7 m) in the Energy Balance Experiment (EBEX), which was conducted in San Joaquin Valley in California during the period from July 20 to August 24, 2000, are used to study the characteristics of coherent structures over an irrigated cotton field. Patch-to-patch irrigation in the field generated the dry-to-wet horizontal advection and the oasis effects, leading to the development of a stably internal boundary layer (SIBL) in the late mornings or the early afternoons. The SIBL persisted in the rest of the afternoons. Under this circumstance, a near-neutral atmospheric surface layer (ASL) developed during the period with a stratification transition from the unstable to stable conditions during the daytime. Therefore, EBEX provides us with unique datasets to investigate the features of coherent structures that were generated over the patches upstream and passed by our site in the unstable ASL, the near-neutral ASL, and the SIBL. We use an objective detection technique and the conditional average method that is developed based on the wavelet analysis. Our data reveal some consistencies and inconsistencies in the characteristics of coherent structures as compared with previous studies. Ramp-like structures and sweep–ejection cycles under the daytime SIBL have similar patterns to those under the nocturnal stable ASL. However, some features (i.e., intermittence) are different from those under the nocturnal stable ASL. Under the three stratifications, thermal and mechanical factors in the ASL perform differently in affecting the ramp intensity for different quantities (i.e., velocity components, temperature, and specific humidity), leading to coherent structures that modulate turbulence flow and alter turbulent transfer differently. It is also found that coherent structures contribute about 10–20% to the total fluxes in our case with different flux contributions under three stratifications and with higher transporting efficiency in sensible heat flux than latent heat and momentum fluxes.

In the first part, this paper synthesises the main results from a series of previous studies on the closure of the local energy balance at low-vegetation sites during the LITFASS-2003 experiment. A residual of up to 25% of the available energy has been found which cannot be fully explained either by the measurement uncertainty of the single components of the surface energy balance or by the length of the flux-averaging period. In the second part, secondary circulations due to heterogeneities in the surface characteristics (roughness, thermal and moisture properties) are discussed as a possible cause for the observed energy balance non-closure. This hypothesis seems to be supported from the fluxes derived from area-averaging measurement techniques (scintillometers, aircraft).

Commonly used measuring methods only allow for a closure of the energy balance at the Earth's surface except for a residual. Models, in contrast, inherently demand an entirely closed energy balance, which they achieve in different ways. This paper examines the model simulations depending on the methods used for closing the energy balance, the optimization of the parameters, and the equations used. The one-dimensional surface vegetation atmosphere transfer (SVAT) models REMO, SEWAB and TERRA, which were made available by the GKSS Institute in Geesthacht, are examined and compared with measured data from the LITFASS-2003 experiment. LITFASS-2003 took place during May and June 2003 in the experimental fields of the Meteorological Observatory Lindenberg. Parameter sets optimized with regard to the turbulent fluxes yield better results, but are often not consistent with site characteristics and differ within the models. We ran the models with the optimized parameter sets, and with a set of selected parameters which agree with the respective sites. SEWAB closes the energy balance by using an iteration of the surface temperature, through which the influence of the residual is distributed over all fluxes. In REMO and TERRA the soil heat flux is estimated as the residual of the other components of the energy balance equation. This results in an extreme overestimation of this heat flux. Parameter optimization has an impact on the partitioning of the available energy and its distribution to the turbulent heat fluxes. It does not influence the effect of the residual on the results. Currently we do not know how to close the measured energy balance at the surface appropriately because of the underestimation of the turbulent fluxes by eddy-covariance measurements and the unknown partitioning of the residual between the sensible and latent heat flux. Therefore, the method used in SEWAB yields better results than the one used in REMO and TERRA. The method used to close the energy balance has more impact on the simulated surface energy balance components than does their parameterization. For this reason it is not possible to attribute the differences in the calculated heat fluxes to particular differences in the equations and parameters.

Eddy-covariance and Sodar/RASS experimental measurement data of the COPS (Convective and Orographically-induced Precipitation Study) field campaign 2007 are used to investigate the generation of near-ground free convection conditions (FCCs) in the Kinzig valley, Black Forest, Southwest Germany. The measured high-quality turbulent flux data revealed that FCCs are initiated near the ground in situations where moderate to high buoyancy fluxes and a simultaneously occurring drop of the wind speed were present. The minimum in wind speed – observable by the Sodar measurements through the whole vertical extension of the valley atmosphere – is the consequence of a thermally-induced valley wind system, which changes its wind direction from down to up-valley winds in the morning hours. Buoyancy then dominates over shear within the production of turbulence kinetic energy near the ground. These situations are detected by the stability parameter (ratio of the measurement height to the Obukhov length) when the level of free convection, which starts above the Obukhov length, drops below that of the sonic anemometer. An analysis of the scales of turbulent motions during FCCs using wavelet transform shows the occurrence of large-scale turbulence structures. Regarding the entire COPS measurement period, FCCs in the morning hours occur on about 50% of all days. Enhanced surface fluxes of latent and sensible heat are found on these days.

Montado are spatially heterogeneous ecosystems that are economically important for the production of cork and herbaceous biomass that provide fodder for animals. Understanding of how trees and the herbaceous layer interact to determine pasture yield and the overall CO2 exchange of the herbaceous layer is crucial. Portable chambers were used to study CO2 exchange by the herbaceous layer component of the montado ecosystem in southern Portugal. Biomass, Net herbaceous layer CO2 exchange (NEE) and respiration (Reco) were measured in the open and understory locations between March and May, during the active growing period. Parameter fits on the NEE data were performed using empirical hyperbolic light response model, while ecosystem respiration (Reco) data were fitted with a two-parameter exponential model. Annual green biomass productions were 405.8 ± 9.0 and 250.6 ± 6.3 g m−2 in the open and the understory, respectively. The respective maximum NEE during the day were −24.0 ± 2.9 and −9.6 ± 2.2 μmol m−2 s−1 while maximum Reco were 20.6 ± 2.2 and 10.0 ± 1.6 μmol m−2 s−1, occurring in April. Photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) explained more that 70% of variations in daytime NEE while soil temperature at 10 cm depth (Tsoil) explained >50% of the variations in Reco under non-limiting soil moisture conditions. Both the herbaceous layer communities shared similar plant functional types and no significant difference in nutrient nitrogen (N) occurred between them. The two herbaceous layer components shared similar physiological characteristics and differences that arose in their CO2 uptake capacities and green biomass production were the result of microclimatic differences created by tree shading.

This study presents a new method to estimate daytime respiration from the subcanopy of forests directly from conventional eddy covariance (EC) measurements. The method primarily considers the respiration signal from root, litter and microbial respiration, which are known to be the main components of ecosystem respiration, Re, as well as decomposition of coarse andfine woody detritus, and respiration from lowunderstory vegetation(forbs, herbs and grasses). The conceptual framework is based on the premise that upward moving air parcels carry a specific and unambiguous signal in their CO2 and water vapour composition, which can be separated and distinguished into respiration and photosynthesis. The model employed a combination of conditional sampling methods, quadrant analysis and relaxed eddy accumulationwith hyperbolic deadbands to identify respiration eventsandto quantify their flux contribution. Datasets from five sites, most of which had multiple sampling heights, were selected to test this technique among contrasting ecosystems and canopy structures.

Long-term eddy covariance measurements over a montado oak woodland in southern Portugal have documented a vulnerability to predicted decreases in springtime rainfall, since water availability during spring limits annual CO 2 gain, the growth of fodder for animals, and the production of cork by Quercus suber . The current study examined CO 2 exchange of three different herbaceous vegetation components distributed over montado landscapes and within the footprint of long-term landscape eddy covariance monitoring studies. Simultaneous measurements with eddy covariance at two sites and with manually operated chambers at multiple locations revealed that slow drainage of shallow basins, the onset of drying at higher sites and a high release of CO 2 below tree canopies significantly influenced the overall course of montado ecosystem gas exchange during the spring. Hyperbolic light response models were employed to up-scale and compare herbaceous gas exchange with landscape net ecosystem CO 2 flux. The up-scaling demonstrates the importance of the herbaceous understory in determining annual carbon balance of the montado and suggests a relatively small additional CO 2 uptake by the tree canopies and boles, i.e., by the aboveground tree compartment, during springtime. Annual flux totals obtained during the extremely dry year 2005 and a normal precipitation year 2006 for the oak woodland and a nearby grassland were essentially the same, indicating that both ecosystems similarly exploit available resources. Based on comparisons with additional temperate grasslands, we can visualize the montado herbaceous cover as a typical European grassland canopy, but where temperature fluctuations in winter control uptake, and where total production depends on springtime rainfall as it controls phenological events and eventually dieback of the vegetation. On the other hand, tree canopies remain active longer during late spring and early summer, modifying the montado response from that of grassland. Uncertainties in flux estimates via both chamber and eddy covariance methodologies currently prevent a full understanding of vegetation/atmosphere coupling, of the recycling of CO 2 between the understory communities and trees, and of relationships between exchange rates of individual components of the vegetation mosaic and overall carbon and water balances in montado landscapes.

Within the project EUropean Studies on Trace gases and Atmospheric CHemistry as a contribution to Large-scale Biosphere-atmosphere experiment in Amazonia (LBA-EUSTACH), we performed tower-based eddy covariance measurements of O3 flux above an Amazonian primary rain forest at the end of the wet and dry season. Ozone deposition revealed distinct seasonal differences in the magnitude and diel variation. In the wet season, the rain forest was an effective O3 sink with a mean daytime (midday) maximum deposition velocity of 2.3 cm s−1, and a corresponding O3 flux of −11 nmol m−2 s−1. At the end of the dry season, the ozone mixing ratio was about four times higher (up to maximum values of 80 ppb) than in the wet season, as a consequence of strong regional biomass burning activity. However, the typical maximum daytime deposition flux was very similar to the wet season. This results from a strong limitation of daytime O3 deposition due to reduced plant stomatal aperture as a response to large values of the specific humidity deficit. As a result, the average midday deposition velocity in the dry burning season was only 0.5 cm s−1. The large diel ozone variation caused large canopy storage effects that masked the true diel variation of ozone deposition mechanisms in the measured eddy covariance flux, and for which corrections had to be made. In general, stomatal aperture was sufficient to explain the largest part of daytime ozone deposition. However, during nighttime, chemical reaction with nitrogen monoxide (NO) was found to contribute substantially to the O3 sink in the rain forest canopy. Further contributions were from non-stomatal plant uptake and other processes that could not be clearly identified. Measurements, made simultaneously on a 22 years old cattle pasture enabled the spatially and temporally direct comparison of O3 dry deposition values from this site with typical vegetation cover of deforested land in southwest Amazonia to the results from the primary rain forest. The mean ozone deposition to the pasture was found to be systematically lower than that to the forest by 30% in the wet and 18% in the dry season.

Thefluxcontributionofcoherentstructurestothetotalexchangeofenergy and matter is investigated in a spruce canopy of moderate density in heterogeneous, complex terrain. The study deploys two methods of analysis to estimate the coherent exchange: conditional averages in combination with wavelet analysis, and quadrant analysis. The data were obtained by high-frequency single-point measurements using sonic anemometers and gas analysers at five observation heights above and within the canopy and subcanopy, and represent a period of up to 2.5months. The study mainly addresses the momentum transfer and exchange of sensible heat throughout the roughness sublayer, while results are provided for the exchange of carbon dioxide and water vapour above the canopy. The magnitude of the flux contribution of coherent structures largely depends on the method of analysis, and it is demonstrated that these differences are attributed to differences in the sampling strategy between the two methods. Despite the differ- ences, relational properties such as sweep and ejection ratios and the variation of the flux contribution with height were in agreement for both methods. The sweep phase of coherentstructures is the dominantprocess close to and within the canopy, whereas the ejections gain importance with increasing distance to the canopy. The efficiency of the coherent exchange in transporting scalars exceeds that for momentum by a factor of two. The occurrence of coherent structures results in a flux error less than 4% for the eddy-covariance method. Based on the physical processes identified from the analysis of the ejection and sweep phases along the vertical profile in the rough- ness sublayer, a classification scheme for the identification of exchange regimes is developed. This scheme allows one to estimate the region of the canopy participat- ing in the exchange of energy and matter with the above-canopy air under varying environmental conditions.
